Seems like the level of expectancy among Exeter fans is higher than I’ve ever known it, and really the justification seems to be (a) lots of people are relieved Tisdale’s gone, having talked themselves into believing that all and any problems at the club were his fault and (b) Matt Taylor making a series of very popular decisions regarding keeping or releasing players. I have to keep reminding myself that if these players were that good most of them would have gone somewhere further up the football tree, but I am enjoying the optimism (mine and others’) and we haven’t seen these lads fail yet.

A win which I think flattered us but I'll take it. Blyth didn't challenge much and I know they've got centre half problems - signing someone already carrying a suspension won't solve them for another few weeks.
Weird they didn't put up more of a fight considering sections of our fans have a conspiracy about them, Morpeth and Wembley so are supposed to be decent (in our new history terms).

I had a very pleasant afternoon on Saturday; 3-1 win which (though by no means a perfect performance) is a good way to start with a new manager. All three of our goals came from debutants: given how reliant we were on Jayden Stockley's goals last year, that's really pleasing. I'm not in the "we're going to piss this tinpot league" place but the performance was coherent enough that my fears of a post-Tisdale upheaval / collapse are allayed for now.

The Heff is being linked with QPR. He's one paced, looks and runs like a lower league clogger, but he's bizarrely + deceptively quite an awesome CB, just what is needed for the long haul of a champo promotion campaign. Just woke up and saw that. Great player, no disrespect but too good for your league even never mind ours. Ball playing centre half, good with his head and feet. Full of confidence going forward and marshalls a defence well.
I had assumed after relegation he would waltz into the West Brom side.

― calzino, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 23:26 (six years ago)
Still not back, don't leave till tomorrow.
According to mates at the game, Leamington started playing for time after about half an hour including the manager telling their #9 (who by all accounts was their best player) to "go down as if you're injured" on the hour mark. (Our seats are directly above the opposition benches otherwise I'd be sceptical.) Two blantant handballs in the lead up to our first which was given for a third handball in the same move although apparently this one was ball-to-man.
10 points from 4 games not a bad start. Still need someone else up front.

― calzino, Saturday, 18 August 2018 19:32 (six years ago)
Injury time winner for Chorley during the 8 minutes added because the ref had to be replaced through injury. Then again we beat Leamington with an injury time winner during the week so we've got 3 points from the games instead of the two we would have had with the 'right' results.
Just signed Jordan Lam from Cardiff Met, apparently he's the best forward player in the Welsh Premier League whatever that's worth.
I doubt for Chester's viability. Lost 8-1 to Blyth a couple of weeks ago, the manager called the players out on it and a couple (including their real talents) have gone. The club then suffered some 'storm damage' which looked like just a couple of collapsed ceiling tiles but has somehow rendered their ground unable to play games ever since. They told us on Saturday the BH Monday fame probably isn't going ahead which will mean they gave cancelled more games than they've played. All the rumours are that insolvency is days away.

Whenever Leeds make a good start to the season the overheated hysteria and bollox talked on Radio Leeds/Look North/Calendar is easy to ignore or treat with the laughable contempt it deserves, normally. But this Bielsa seems like the real deal. What a troubling situation. I might even get the rosaries out and say a daily morning prayer for their season to go to shit and for Danny Mills and Noel Whelan to die in a M62 pile up.

I have so far managed to maintain my boycott of Franchise (we've played them a couple of times) but these are special circumstances and I really really want to go to this one.
I am working up a Franchise Ticket Fee Offset Scheme (FF-Offs I call it) where any of my mates who'd (a) ordinarily buy a beer or two at half time in the bar (I know who they are) and (b) choose not to buy any "refreshments" at the ground
can have an additional pint on me after the game.
I reckon if I can divert approx. £20 - £25 of bar spend to a pub rather than the club bar that will offset most of the benefit to the club of my ticket.

Nahki won't be the answer to QPR's woes, he's hardly played in the last year and his profligacy in front of goal makes him not much better than Conor Washington these days. And he is a bit of a needy fragile ego type, who doesn't knuckle down. Last type of player you need in a relegation scrap. Although maybe a bit early for the "r" word, but lets face it, Schteve is a fucking useless twat!

― Tim, Sunday, 26 August 2018 11:29 (six years ago)
Disappointing performance yesterday, BPA better all over the field and worked well as a unit moving up and down together and leaving us no space to play.
More worrying is still the lack of ability to change things up when it's not working - we took off a wide player returning from injury after a knock maybe 30 minutes in while one down. Swapped him for a defensive midfielder, because we only had two of them on the pitch already. After an hour we took off a left back and replaced him with a centre forward which meant we had to drop a DM back to lb and push a striker wide to maintain a 4-4-2. Then took off a centre forward who was playing in the middle and replaced him with a wide player, who played out of position in the middle.

O’Shea was pretty good; Oates did alright but it was hard to judge how well because we left him exposed for big chunks of the game. He put in a few stinking crosses but showed willing. It turns out VAR is for seeing whether our players went in with studs up but it is not for checking whether their players do petulant little kicks once the ball has gone.

I note tactics Tim Sherwood advocating the formal adoption of L1 / L2 clubs as feeder clubs to the proper real footballing organisations in the prem, on the basis that this is the only way that young English players will get the "game time" they need to improve the England team.
I don't know why no-one's thought of this brilliant idea before.
― Tim, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 09:52 (six years ago)
he's always likes to look at the big picture does this lad, like when he used to manage Spurs from the nosebleeds. He's gone up in a hot air balloon this time, take a holistic view of the English Game!

In other news our miserable run continues, dumped out of the Herefordshire cup by Westfields in the first round.
Torquay apparently sniffing round Beadle. They can have him. I'll pay his train fare.
― Bimlo Horsewagon became Wheelbarrow Horseflesh (aldo), Wednesday, 12 September 2018 17:24 (six years ago)
Poor old Torquay are in a right old hole - bought by a developer, their fans seem to think the owner is happy to see the club drift away down the leagues.
― Tim, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 20:12 (six years ago)
Watch out, Beadle's about...

― Bimlo Horsewagon became Wheelbarrow Horseflesh (aldo), Thursday, 13 September 2018 11:23 (six years ago)
Torquay getting Gary Johnson is a show of intent, I would have thought?
Not sure how I feel about Beadle going, so many problems right now, but first real crisis he's had in three years, so surely worth giving him one chance to turn it around? But probably inevitable that we'd need to change fairly soon anyway, so maybe it's for the best. Just have to stop expecting that fourth consecutive promotion.
― mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 13 September 2018 11:36 (six years ago)
The above with the proviso that I don't follow the team that closely, especially this year.
― mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 13 September 2018 11:37 (six years ago)
For all the results were last year he was found out there to be honest - doggedly sticking to 4-3-3 even if it clearly wasn't working despite having to play 2 or 3 out of position to support it.
It was ok before when results were going our way - although often flattering 80+ minutes of negative grind - but now pretty much all the teams have cottened on to the inflexibility it's not going to work in the long run.
I accept losing to Westfields isn't on the same scale as losing to Peggy or Lads Club but to see a near first choice team overrun by a team of players nearly all let go by Beadle for not being good enough (and he was pretty much right in his assessment to be fair) proved the final straw for his inability to get anything out of the team.

Sorry NBS but tonight thank God it's them instead of you.
Things are coming together for sure. It's not pretty a lot of the time and there's a propensity for light and heat without much product but yesterday I think we actually looked good for lots of the game and that's the first time this season I've been able to say that honestly.
The players seem to be performing for Richards even if it's not always clear to the spectator what he wants them to do, but he's just unlikeable. It's like being managed by Neil Warnock.
We absolutely need an actual striker though.

Hopefully get rid of the Dymock mafia, whether someone would leave a club at this stage of the season is doubtful so you'd have to be looking at someone currently out of work (e.g. Gary Rowett) or get the Davies/Green partnership back in to try and steady the wheel.
Lots of clamour for Beadle/Jenkins back as expected but them not being able to find another job since - and not even making the Gloucester shortlist - is telling. And holding up Billericay as an example of returns happening before just makes the club sound like a basket case.
We're desperate for a striker and at the weekend I was advocating an old pro, inspired by Jamie Cureton doing a job on us more than once last season. Then today I find Pascal Chimbomba is to play ever further down the pyramid.
― Bimlo Horsewagon became Wheelbarrow Horseflesh (aldo), Monday, 21 January 2019 14:07 (six years ago)
A decent experienced striker can do quite a lot for keeping the team shape together also. There is something slightly tragic about watching one take up a really intelligent position for a particular ball, see the move work as anticipated and then just not have the turn of speed to get there. Cases in point: Clinton Morrison, Marcus Stewart for us. They were both worth the shirt but a tiny bit of extra pace and they'd have been worth a shirt for much better sides than ours.
― Tim, Monday, 21 January 2019 14:16 (six years ago)
IIRG Cureton is the last current professional footballer to have been in FIFA 96? Or one of the last?

FC United started today second from bottom and 9 points from safety, off the back of four consecutive defeats (and having lost 8 out of the last 9 games). With 15 minutes to go, we were 3-1 down at home against the team 5th from bottom, looking as dead and buried as you can be. It's just finished 3-3. Probably nowhere near enough, but...

The second half was maybe the best we've played all season. Speaking to a couple of their fans after the game, their manager instructs them at half time to sit back and take the points if they're thoroughly on top and they got caught by it for not the first time.
So a combination of the two might have flattered the result - especially when both our goals were scrappy horrorshows - but I'm almost optimistic about the new season.

― After Cease to Brexist (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 28 April 2019 13:48 (six years ago)
I really hate players pretending to be punched or elbowed or head butted or whatever.
I do think that the kind of trickster business that gets the other side to slow down or switch off or whatever is hilarious though. It's very annoying when it happens to my lot because it means someone has made chumps of my team.
I think if Danny Mills is on the telly saying something's "morally wrong" the chances are it's probably alright and I suppose Villa should be proud that their staff cleave so strongly to Corinthian sporting ideals that they were forced to initiate scraps right across (and off) the pitch.
Can't say I blame Bielsa for telling them to let Villa score, given what happened last time his lot did something that wasn't against the rules but apparently offended English football's "morals".
I am angry that watching the clip of this has resulted in my seeing John Terry's face, I did not want that to happen.

is there some ancient word that describes when you can't fucking stand football/football players/managers/fans/the whole shebang really, anymore, but feel empty sadness at lack of domestic football fixtures to engage with?
― calzino, Saturday, 25 May 2019 14:10 (five years ago)
Newport v Tranmere going on right now! Tranmere starting to look stronger but still goalless - may well be one of those games that comes down to either a moment of brilliance, a horrendous mistake or penalties.

where is Bowyer going then imago? Fucking loathed the cunt from his days as one of O'Leary's precious "young" Leeds team that proved to be even worse than their individual parts. But he seems like not as horrible + violent as he was as a young man and might even be a half decent manager for teh post brexit Vanarama sponsored back to basics "all parachute payments cancelled" EFL.
― calzino, Monday, 17 June 2019 19:42 (five years ago)
can't even process what's going on tbh. bowyer is a v canny and effective manager though, and has lost the attitude problem more or less completely
― imago, Monday, 17 June 2019 19:59 (five years ago)
seems to be above average levels of managerial tumult this year in champo, although I've only come to this conclusion after just reading some thread saying there is already half a dozen clubs who've pumped/replaced their managers already and that might just be the usual tbf.
― calzino, Monday, 17 June 2019 20:30 (five years ago)
although I didn't mention the category of useless fucking egotistical club owners just losing managers because they've better things to do with their precious time and money.

Tim's lot snap up Ajose. Sure to become a crowd unfavourite, but will occasionally pop up with a goal or an assist out of nowhere, meaning that among the cognoscenti (yourself inclusive, obviously) he'll gain a reputation of 'underrated'
― imago, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 16:47 (five years ago)
Scored 24 for Swindon one season, I hear. My friends seem pleased , usually a bad sign.

HTSA statement on Town's 'new kit'We hate to break it to you, our rosy-cheeked friends, but you've been the victim of some top-notch Banter. But while you’re here, please consider reading a bit about our charity partners. They all do necessary work in our communities, and most of the time, they don’t get paid for it, so they need your help.First off, there's the Huddersfield Town Foundation. The Foundation started off by providing free school breakfasts in Huddersfield and the surrounding areas, but they've since grown to the point where they’re involved in almost every aspect of our communities. And the more they do, the more resources they need. You can donate here.Second, we've partnered with the Welcome Centre, a foodbank that supports local families and individuals in crisis. The number of people who have to use foodbanks has skyrocketed in recent years, so again, the Welcome Centre appreciate any time, money, or goods that you can give. Find out more about donating food here , or about donating money here.Third, we work with Destitute Asylum Seekers Huddersfield (DASH). DASH provides advice and other support to destitute asylum seekers in Huddersfield. These groups do not have access to main public funds and no support from the home office. Click here for more information.Fourth, we are happy to announce that we will be helping raise awareness of and funds for Ruddi's Retreat, a Linthwaite-based charity helps families with seriously ill children. Visit their website and donate. Finally, we would like to draw people's attention to Gamble Aware and When The Fun Stops , two charities that help those affected by gambling-related problems.
