I have to say, and no doubt time will make a fool of me, but Utd's signings so far this summer haven't convinced me that top 6 is an unattainable dream for us lesser clubs

AWB is a brilliant signing imo. Best one on one defender in the league
Bit more business to do for sure though
― Number None, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 11:47 (five years ago)
AWB was nailed on to go to Utd for a chunk of change since November I'd say. A very obvious coincidence of needs for the player and the two clubs I reckon.
Packie Bonner's comments on Tierney are indicative of how hard it's going to be for anyone from the Premier League to sign players from much less wealthy leagues. Why should Celtic a first team player with a contract to an English club for anything less than £25m?

United have apparently bid £34m for Bruno Fernandes, which is likely to be as successful as the Zaha offer.
Barcelona have supposedly put up £100m for Lautaro Martinez, scorer of six Serie A goals last season (who does look an excellent prospect tbf).
― ShariVari, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 06:38 (five years ago)

at the risk of exposing myself to the ridicule of the masses...
Tyrone Mings was fucking fantastic for us in the second half of last season and was a massive factor in that ridiculous winning streak that took us from mid-table into the playoffs. he is a total fan fave already and i'm glad we've got him on a permanent deal. i mean probably we are massively overpaying but when Man Utd are talking about spending 70m on Harry Maguire or whatever the figure is being quoted atm i don't really care, what even is money
― Windsor Davies, Monday, 8 July 2019 01:11 (five years ago)
Do you rate Tuanzebe, Windsor?
― Number None, Monday, 8 July 2019 07:26 (five years ago)
Tyrone is a Big Character. He is steadfastly, unwaveringly Up For It. He Loves It.
He'll probably also be picking up some straight reds for abysmal last ditch interventions during 6-0 defeats to ooh, most of the top 8
I think Villa will go back down, because they have to pretty much buy a new team, and they seem to be taking lots of punts on unproven players to facilitate it. Maybe they'll sign loads of players with Premier League experience later in the window idk, but dropping 20mil on Tyrone doesn't suggest they're on some ultra-patient 5d chess bargain hunting
― Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Monday, 8 July 2019 10:07 (five years ago)
The Guardian piece on Maguire today seemed pretty OTM, you can imagine a Guardiola or a Klopp or a Poch turning him into a real £70m player but the idea of Solskjaer doing that?
― Matt DC, Monday, 8 July 2019 20:37 (five years ago)
aside from it defeating the purpose to pay 70m for a player you have to then turn into a 70m player
― phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Monday, 8 July 2019 21:10 (five years ago)
Has Pep improved Stones’ defending? Has Poch improved anyone’s defending? Idk.
Maguire has been consistently good enough over the last two years to suggest he doesn’t need to get that much better to be a regular starter in a top 4 defence. £70m seems about the going rate. West Ham are valuing Issa Diop at £5m more.
― ShariVari, Monday, 8 July 2019 21:19 (five years ago)
£70m seems about the going rate.
For the English market, yes. For anyone outside it seems bonkers. Hell, Juve and Ajax are still bickering about De Ligt (for somewhere between 55-70m, in euros iirc). Maguire going for £70m is insane all over the world, except in England. I get why, up to a degree (file under: homegrown etc). Just wondering how many Tyrone Mings and Maguires it takes till England corrects, or is forced to correct, this hyperinflation. Not anytime soon, not with this tv dough, I reckon.

You know the market is as it should be when you see Feyenoord signing one Liam Kelly from Reading on a free and hailing him like the second coming of the lord jesus christ tbf
On topic: I don't understand why ManC or Liverpool or ManU hesitate to fork out 100m for De Ligt, when they seem all to keen to waste their money on filler like Stones and Maguire etc.
― Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 8 July 2019 21:46 (five years ago)
xp Poch arguably improved Vertongen, but not defensively imo
well he'd have to want to go there in the first place
― Number None, Monday, 8 July 2019 21:47 (five years ago)
De Ligt is proving he's the anti Frenkie 'Barca has always been my dream club so I'm going there' de Jong. He's about the money, coupled with a club w/ some prospects, true. So that rules out ManU. ManC and Liverpool still very much asleep imo.
― Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 8 July 2019 21:53 (five years ago)
seems like an unnecessary extravagance for Liverpool
City, I guess, but they can't spend 50m+ on a centre back every season
― Number None, Monday, 8 July 2019 22:01 (five years ago)
Liverpool's defence could be immense with a Van Dijk/De Ligt center, and relegate trash like Lovre/Gomez/Matip to the bench. I don't think that's too extravagant. For City, perhaps.
― Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 8 July 2019 22:05 (five years ago)

― nxd, Friday, 12 July 2019 13:18 (five years ago)
xp not to be testy tim but yr response practically sighed and blew its hair out of its eyes tbh- the question wasnt thrown out there as a parochial slur on anywhere
'there' is roma the club, we can obv build in the quality of life factors (weather aside, are they so different for an athlete multimillionaire celebrity between london and rome? who knows?).
is roma the club a step up? id have said not, history and all that say its level at present.
is the salary on offer (after tax and all whatnot) at roma now (inc years offered) going to beat any spurs offer (likely, likely) as well as any other offer coming in (id really have thought not)
and then the old "am i in the right place now, is the risk of a move a factor"
theres a ton of places id have thought were obvious better options on a range of relevant items....idk do spurs fans overrate him or what but id have him walking into pretty much any first xi in the world, and 30 isnt any age for a centre back without any real history of injuries.
its a curious one, is all. maybe hes decided already to run down the last year?
― phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Friday, 12 July 2019 13:21 (five years ago)
All of which does beg the question: why on earth are Spurs considering letting him go?
― Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Friday, 12 July 2019 13:30 (five years ago)
It's not long before the £25m release clause in Toby's contract expires. Given his age and the fact he has one more year on his contract it's unlikely that, great as he is, he'll be worth much more than that. So I guess Levy is desperate to offload him.
The alternative is he signs a new contract, which I personally would love, but that's the likely end of any major resale value.
― Matt DC, Friday, 12 July 2019 13:35 (five years ago)
Vertonghen has been the better CB over the last couple of seasons but Toby's playmaking abilities and long passing ability from CB are a really underappreciated aspect of the way the team plays. There aren't many CBs who can do that.
― Matt DC, Friday, 12 July 2019 13:37 (five years ago)
He's technically good enough, not to mention smart enough to have at least 4 more years in him (arbitrary figure, probably) - that's the value, innit? Strikes me there aren't many of Toby's quality around so unless he's agitating for a move, you do everything you can to keep him?
Or what Matt said.
― Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Friday, 12 July 2019 13:39 (five years ago)
yeah pref to resign him on decent money, imagine that the length of contract is the major prob.
pref after that is another year out of him at current salary. 25m isnt that much to forego for the calibre of player in it, and if nothing else it reinforces levys hardman ego
― phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Friday, 12 July 2019 14:05 (five years ago)
xxp I'm feeling untestily Fridayish, even in the face of unwarranted and hurtful hair jibes directed at one of ILx's baldest men.
'there' can be Roma the club if you like but 'there' is also unavoidably Roma the city, and Italy the country, right? Also Italy the footballing culture. I understand the requirement for close reading of your communiques but insisting on only one of these 'there's as a subject for your speculation is a bit bleedin' rich I'd say.
There are only a few reasons why a football club would want to retain the services of a player but there are loads of reasons why an individual might want to make a move, even a sideways move. I mean, we can play a game of imagining personal motivations if you like?

― Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Friday, 12 July 2019 14:16 (five years ago)
anyway, if i ought to clarify that the *why there* carried the unspoken *instead of * of ~all of the supposed options~ and not just stayin at spurs then im happy to do so.
like imagining personal motivations is p much baked in to what we are discussing but its very hard to not imagine madrid, barca, juve and a host of others not offering a better overall package from cafes to dusky evening sunlight year-round but being an obviously more appealing destination career wise.
utd or city for cash while stayin in england if for family reasons or whatever thats a concern
ajax for sentiment
i stand by the confusion over roma being:
- especially appealing to him as an option
but more, i suppose
- being the best offer he has, that we know of

My understanding is that Aurier is up for sale as well. I like KWP but it still feels too early for him, Foyth should be nowhere near the team.
So yeah I'm guessing we're buying one. RB and central midfield were our main problem positions last year.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 July 2019 16:31 (five years ago)
of the two id have trippier ahead of aurier certainly, even before wages

― jou're much too jung, girl (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 16 July 2019 19:11 (five years ago)
also think that full back is a position pochs tactic asks so much of that the difference between "walker is now worth 55m"(when 55m was a lot) and "how can this fool who started the cl final possibly move to a big club" is really marginal.
its a horribly exposed position with huge asks in both attack and defence and if you make a slip our centres and goalie havent been great at covering, but facts is that trippier has had a year of slips and as a result his stock is probably undeservedly low.
still kinda impressed at the move. fair play to him.
― phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Tuesday, 16 July 2019 19:15 (five years ago)
tbf every manager on earth's tactics ask so much of a full back. it's a brutal position and you can't do it right really.
and of course, fair play to him.

― phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Tuesday, 16 July 2019 20:36 (five years ago)
The other big difference between World Cup Trippier and last season's Trippier is that England played in a back five with Walker there to cover for him.
Trippier's main assets are the quality and accuracy of his cross and his ability with a dead ball and as an old fashioned English winger he might have worked well but high level teams don't play with them any more.
For a while it looked like Poch intended to go with a back five but without Dembele our squad lacked the really commanding midfielder who can protect them.
Probably the best analogue is the role Victor Moses played under Conte. No one thought Moses was a world class right back but he did exceptionally well in a team where everyone knew their role and they never needed to rotate. Moses could go forward because he had two (at the time) excellent recovery defenders in Azpilicueta and Cahill and an erratic but talented one in David Luiz whose mistakes they could also cover for. They also had probably the world's best defensive midfielder in Kante and we haven't come close to finding a player like that. On the other side Marcos Alonso also had an amazing season and hasn't played quite as consistently well as that since.
The closest parallel to that excellent recovery defender in the Spurs squad is Sanchez who has also the pace and ability but is still cutting out his own mistakes. Better to trade up for a proper well rounded right back rather than wait for Sanchez to progress to the level when he can reliably bail Trippier out.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 08:04 (five years ago)
Bruce appointed at Newcastle after all. Rondon sounds like he's off to Dalian and Perez has already gone to Leicester. Joselu has also left. I think that leaves Gayle as their only striker.
― ShariVari, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 09:27 (five years ago)

― Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 09:46 (five years ago)
My theory is that Bruce's championship record is inflated somewhat by him usually going where a decent amount of bunce is being chucked about and then leaving/getting sacked when it's gone. This pattern started when he fucked off the blades for tinpot Hudds just as we'd been bought out by a wealthy benefactor. I'll never believe he's even a half decent manager.

Niche interest but as someone who watched an enormous amount of Australian football last season, for lack of anything better to do on a Saturday morning, it’s good to see Sarpreet Singh get picked up by Bayern Munich.
He’s one of the best passers of the ball in the league, albeit with next to no competition, but it’s difficult to judge how useful he would be to a decent team. It’ll be interesting to see how he develops in Germany over the next couple of years.

£17m for Phil Billing from Bournemouth will be astonishingly good good business. And I like the idea of such a tinpot player as him going to such a tinpot shit ground no fans club. He puts in a couple of 8/10 shifts and scores a pretty amazing goal tbf then starts thinking he's a superstar who should be at Barca. He's a total diva who downed tools and spat his dummy out when the going got tough. It probably didn't help with one of our morons calling him a "black donkey" on twitter, but he's still a total waster and probably no more than a few mill worth of midfielder at best.

Moise Kean to Everton, here we go! Total agreement reached with Juventus, last details will be completed on next hours. The striker will fly to UK tomorrow to undergo his medicals and sign the contract. 🔵 #transfers #Everton #Juve— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) July 30, 2019

It's weird when Moise Kean seems like a fantastic coup but otoh it's up to £36m for a 19yo after a good season in Serie A. I don't even know anymore.
― lilcraigyboi (Craigo Boingo), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 12:44 (five years ago)
It’s an amazing deal. He looks like one of the most talented young strikers Italy has produced in years and the price is a relative steal imo. I am really surprised that Juve agreed to let him go without the €60m buyback clause.
Potentially shifting him and Dybala and keeping Ronaldo / Higuain looks really strange.
― ShariVari, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 12:54 (five years ago)
Yeah, a great deal. Everton doing well so far. Brands rarely disappoints.
For Juve though, SV otm. No idea why they're letting go of the younger hot prospects relatively easily.

― phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Thursday, 8 August 2019 07:28 (five years ago)
No, it would be the most surprising signing since Klinsmann, and with significantly higher barriers.
The only way it would work would be if Levy's decided the current wage structure is unsustainable. Realistically, idk if Harry Kane is going to be happy earning exactly half as much per week as Aaron Ramsey, for the next six years.
― ShariVari, Thursday, 8 August 2019 07:32 (five years ago)
Don't they have a ridiculous bonus system that means their real earnings are significantly higher than their weekly reported wage though?
I mean it seems implausible that they're going to get this far down the road and then go "oh, we didn't realise Dybala's wage demands were going to be so high" but who even knows. Maybe Levy is deluded enough to think he can boardroom hard man him into submission.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 8 August 2019 07:49 (five years ago)

Lo Celso and Ndombele are several years younger than either and Ndombele is almost certainly a major upgrade on any of our central midfielders. Sessegnon looks like it's happening as well although he's obviously a work in progress I'm confident in Poch to work his magic on him.

Mooy isn't one of the wasters that downed tools last season but he's been a shadow of the player he was for a while. This funny business of getting him to sign a contract extension then loaning him to Brighton might backfire on us - if he has another dud season it might be hard to move him on when the club is thinking how much they could have got for him in this window. He must have agitated for the move because we just received £15m for Billing and are not under pressure to sell and the players all take 40% wage cuts with the relegation - or something like that is written into all their contracts. Proper tight northern bstads!
― calzino, Thursday, 8 August 2019 16:49 (five years ago)
I think it's an obligation to buy Lo Celso unless we fail to qualify for Europe. In which case it becomes an option, and he won't want to take it.
