So fucking thrilled to see that after Sunday's parliamentary elections, where a previously unknown, batshit far-right party made up of Iron Guard worshipping, ethnonationalist, christopath covidiots whose leader is a literal ultra somehow managed to garner 9% of the popular vote – in no small part thanks to expat voters, a quarter of which apparently want nothing more than to trade Ludovic Orban for Viktor Orbán – some racist shit-for-brains referee puts Romania back in the spotlight.

Tbf he reportedly said 'negrul', which means 'the black guy'. While referring to black players by the colour of their skin is, uh, insensitive, to say least, it's also important to note that 'negru' in Romanian is not a racial slur in and of itself – it just means black (masculine).
― pomenitul, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 23:36 (four years ago)
As has been repeatedly pointed out though, why would he be referring to him like that at all, rather than as 'the assistant coach, him' *gestures*
― imago, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 23:43 (four years ago)
That's the crux of it, yes. No one in Romania thinks that's racist because, well, Romania is a racist af country like all of its Eastern European neighbours, so the aforementioned far-right anti-Western party (AUR) will score some extra points in the collective unconscious tonight.
― pomenitul, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 23:49 (four years ago)
Anyway, I just wanted to point out that he didn't use the n-word per se, since that's how it was seemingly reported at first.
― pomenitul, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 23:50 (four years ago)
LJ otm, referring to a person by calling out his colour is nagl. He'd not have said 'hey whitey' if the assistant had been white, surely, to call on him. It annoys me immensely yet it's completely unsurprising to read a lot of footy fans going 'but negru isn't racist! it's pc gone mad!'. Finally a team had the balls to just say 'enough of this shit', to walk the walk after every match starts with 'no to racism', with the opposite side showing solidarity no less. That's class imo.
― A Scampo Darkly (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 07:51 (four years ago)
For sure, but it's also worth noting that the majority of Romanians have never seen a black person in real life, have little to no knowledge of Western colonialism's history, and are thus simply too ignorant to approach such matters with the required sensitivity. To my mind, there is a difference between a Western European saying this is an instance of PC culture gone mad and an Eastern European arguing the same thing, doubly so if they're not expats, because my anecdotal sense is that 95%+ of Romanians just don't get it at all, including the least overtly fash ones.
Beyond that, however, and to the extent that we are collectively incapable of acknowledging the murderous racism that we've inflicted upon the Roma and Jewish communities within our own country over the centuries, it seems clear to me that these 'attenuating circumstances' conceal a stubborn unwillingness to engage with issues of race in general, greatly decreasing whatever leftover sympathy I might have as a Westernized expat. Not to mention – and this, too, is key – that Colțescu himself should have known better insofar as he belongs to that minority of Romanians who have indeed interacted with black folks before, and because an international match calls for international mores, including in one's own mother tongue. The fact that he, unlike most of his compatriots, was directly privy to the aforementioned context yet drew no lessons from it is damning, and he fully deserves the flak, even though he will no doubt continue to paint himself as a hapless victim now that he has the entire nation's backing.
― pomenitul, Wednesday, 9 December 2020 15:45 (four years ago)
i mean in short part of that is the old "honest mistakes are fine, but if you don't listen when you're corrected then you're a dick" thing, which is hardly unique to eastern europe but is super poisonous as a political tool
― Uptown Top Scamping (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 17:34 (four years ago)
Of course this is being used as an opportunity to argue that WE'RE the real victims of racism here, so there's definitely a pattern, yeah. *sigh*
― pomenitul, Wednesday, 9 December 2020 17:37 (four years ago)
Well, Romanians are not the real victims of racism but there's a scale, an on one end there is a referee who may or may not intended something despicable and on the other there's Erdogan, the Qatari owners, the French political class, all with well worked racistographies that are crying foul. When they are painting the Romanian as some backwards non-cosmopolitan redneck who can't possibly save himself from being decent, it rings as hollow and it rings as racism. I support the players decisions to walk off the pitch, but anything above that is hypocrisy, and I'm sad the players won't protest that.
― Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 9 December 2020 20:22 (four years ago)
Erdogan in particular can go get stuffed, but our community dgaf about racism unless it targets us specifically, so while I have no doubt that some Westerners are using this as an excuse to continue dumping on Romanians in general, there is also no question to my mind that the majority of Romanians are utterly unable and/or unwilling to question their own prejudices. France, for all its flaws, is still a less racist nation than Romania in 2020.
― pomenitul, Wednesday, 9 December 2020 20:32 (four years ago)
yeah well the most racist comments I've heard in Montreal have all come from Romanians.
― Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 9 December 2020 21:08 (four years ago)
Colour me surprised… Navigating this shit among other Romanians (and Eastern Europeans in general tbh) is a fucking nightmare at the best of times. It makes me empathize with Americans whose relatives have succumbed to the Great Trumpist Plague of 2016 and for which no surefire vaccine has been found so far. It's also an involuntary masterclass in rhetorical persuasion for me to the extent that simply going 'you're racist!' makes them even more entrenched in their position, whereas a modicum of dialogue and proper contextualization does go a long way with some people, which is about as much as we can ask for, I'm afraid.
The 'funny' thing, too, is that on the scale of Romanian racism, Colțescu's actions rank quite low. He even self-policed his tone by saying 'ăla negru' (the one who is black) instead of the sadly more common 'negru ăla' (that black one, which sounds more contemptuous in Romanian without quite entering n-word territory tbf) so unconsciously he must have known that language matters.
― pomenitul, Wednesday, 9 December 2020 21:23 (four years ago)
The plot thickens. Romanian media is reporting that one of the Turkish officials (presumably) yelled something to the effect of 'in my country, Romanians are gypsies. I can't say "gypsies"'. Yet you just fucking did?

away goals abolished, which i get even though i am a fan of them. what i don't get is having 30 mins of extra time before pens in event of an aggregate draw, seems unfairly weighted in favour of whoever has the 2nd leg at home.

― oscar bravo, Thursday, 24 June 2021 18:50 (four years ago)
Sorry, don't understand.
― Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Thursday, 24 June 2021 18:52 (four years ago)
away goals rule was instituted when plane travel was slower and less comfortable, and some teams even travelled via bus to neighbouring countries. accommodations could be unpleasant, training facilities sub-par. football was also a lot less developed so teams weren't taking their sports scientists and nutritionists with them, these roles not existing then.
back in the day many uk teams have sob-stories about mammoth journeys to eastern europe, dingy digs, dodgy food, training in car-parks. all that jumpers for goalposts "real football" type shit.
now it's millionaires taking a flight, usually just for a few hours, going to an interchangeable luxury hotel that could be in any city, having an identical routine pre and post-match in terms of food, training in comparable facilities etc.
― 《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 24 June 2021 19:00 (four years ago)
Indeed but why is it difficult to justify the away goals rule nowadays? It was introduced in the era when teams might have to play a third match to settle a match, and that's not about to happen again, and also to stop teams parking the bus in away ties.
― Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Thursday, 24 June 2021 19:07 (four years ago)
Is the theory that penalty kicks are a fairer way to settle ties?
― Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Thursday, 24 June 2021 19:09 (four years ago)
By the way, when I said, "What's changed", I meant from last year, not from 1965.
― Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Thursday, 24 June 2021 19:13 (four years ago)
jim that's a solid summary of where the rule came from but away goals always create a tactical slyness that will be missed, just another bland step to TV mulch

I’ve seen all Barca’s league games this season and they really are awful. They have injuries, tbf, but they’re a one-man team at the moment and, unfortunately, that man is Memphis Depay who turns up for one game in three,
Koeman wants to be sacked but Barca can’t afford his severance pay. He was criticised for not playing enough young players so has been stuffing the team with 17-year-olds out of spite. They make Spurs look organised and cohesive.

I would love to say that Michael Owen saying Liverpool will "blow Real Madrid away" and Gerrard and Ferdinanad saying they would win comfortably has not coloured my view of this match... but I can't. Also Andy Townsend talking about Reel Madrid.

Liverpool have looked knackered the last few games really, after 40 mins without scoring they were basically spent. Trent played like his critics say he plays, poor for the goal, a few terrible attempts on goal and crap set pieces. Keita was awful when he came on. Great defending from Madrid tbf.

congrats to tom d, ailsa, and celtic. am proper loving this version of city. a cf who cant be bothered to pretend to even occupy space to slow the opposition when city are defending coupled with a midfield that cant run turns out isnt a good recipe for defending transitions. who'd have thought it?
― oscar bravo, Wednesday, 22 January 2025 22:14 (five months ago)
the only change id make to the format is the top 8 seeds should have to pick from 1st to 8th which team they play in the last 16. would create some proper grudges with teams feeling slighted and if the upset happens grief for the higher seeded manager.
― oscar bravo, Wednesday, 22 January 2025 22:16 (five months ago)

Buendia has signed an extension at Villa and immediately joined Bayer Leverkusen on loan with option to buy
Ah-Ahli in for Duran
Arsenal in for Watkins
Possibly about to finally, finally hammer the Fuck Everything Sign Joao Felix For Some Reason button
And they need to beat Celtic in an hour with a half fit defence to be able to qualify for the last 16
Bit of a Season Finale vibe, in more ways than one

Aye, there's been some rubbish I've seen chatted on the social media today about how Calum McGregor doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as other Celtic captains. He's absolutely a big-game player and showed it there.
If we can hang on to Daizen past this summer, I'll be amazed.

absolutely joyless tho that does seem to be par for the course. thought we were even more fortunate with the konate incident.
this game reminds me a bit of when klopp's liverpool teams would take on some stately league leader in europe. psg look way faster and more athletic.
that said an undeserved goal seemed likely also - doesn't seem like it would take much pressure for liverpool to score.
― LocalGarda, Wednesday, 5 March 2025 20:51 (three months ago)
the end to endness and the thing that it's a first leg just made it a stupider call imo, but yeah too ealry to say whether this impacts the tie

up until this year i also kinda hated raphina, just seemed like a selfish player to me, too often looking to score w/o enough skill to consistently finish, but he's really turned that on its head this year. there have been matches this season -- including yesterday and the last classico -- where yamal-lewandowski-raphina look as dominant as messi-suarez-neymar, which is really wild to say. they easily could have had 6 or 7 goals yesterday

― Reggaeton Sax (NickB), Thursday, 17 April 2025 21:46 (two months ago)
I guess part of the broadening of the CL involves making it fucking easy for someone to win the Europa and get the newly added CL place.
― LocalGarda, Thursday, 17 April 2025 21:47 (two months ago)
crazy stuff but we were bailed out by a soft red card and a soft pen there
― Reggaeton Sax (NickB), Thursday, 17 April 2025 21:52 (two months ago)
Well somebody's playing Bodø/Glimt in the semis as they've just beaten Lazio on penalties.
― Nuts, whole hazelnuts (Tom D.), Thursday, 17 April 2025 21:57 (two months ago)
tbf if you play one good game in a hundred and luck is with you then you'll be a man my son
― i got bao-yu babe (Noodle Vague), Friday, 18 April 2025 00:34 (two months ago)
This PSG side are so good.
― LocalGarda, Tuesday, 29 April 2025 19:22 (one month ago)
the commentator saying that the tribute to the Pope would be at all the semis this week got me checking to make sure Rangers got knocked out in the quarters, that would have been an awkward minutes "silence"
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Tuesday, 29 April 2025 19:45 (one month ago)
A lot of bad calls from this ref so far
― Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Tuesday, 29 April 2025 19:54 (one month ago)
Awesome. Come on ye Inter.
― Blake the Messenger (Tom D.), Wednesday, 30 April 2025 19:07 (one month ago)
Crazy game.
― Blake the Messenger (Tom D.), Wednesday, 30 April 2025 20:23 (one month ago)
What a game. Yamal most exciting player in world football right now.
― Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Wednesday, 30 April 2025 20:55 (one month ago)
Holy smoke what an exhibition (of shit defending lol)
― nashwan, Wednesday, 30 April 2025 21:50 (one month ago)
Loving Rooney's goonerbaiting this week. And he barely mentioned that tifo.
― lilcraigyboi (Craigo Boingo), Saturday, 3 May 2025 10:42 (one month ago)
Barcelona's high line is the kind of thing that loses you big CL games when it gets this far in
― LocalGarda, Tuesday, 6 May 2025 19:45 (one month ago)
Asking for trouble
Dumfries having another stormer
― Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Tuesday, 6 May 2025 20:00 (one month ago)
For some reason I can only get a stream of the Irish coverage and I keep thinking Kenny Cunningham is saying yer man instead of Yamal.
― Blake the Messenger (Tom D.), Tuesday, 6 May 2025 20:04 (one month ago)
Haha. Another great game.
― LocalGarda, Tuesday, 6 May 2025 20:44 (one month ago)

this match looks great, anyone know of a good streaming website by any chance?
― Jibe, Tuesday, 6 May 2025 20:56 (one month ago)
How is this competition so insane?
― LocalGarda, Tuesday, 6 May 2025 21:00 (one month ago)
Some Tardelli shit from Frattesi there. Amazing celebration.
― I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Tuesday, 6 May 2025 21:14 (one month ago)
Reminded me of Fabio Grosso in 2006. The finish and the celebration.

― hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Wednesday, 7 May 2025 19:10 (one month ago)
Don't get TNT's obsession with having the affable Fletch-Coisty pairing suddenly interrupted by an extremely unlikeable 1990s centre back you didn't realise was there
― hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Wednesday, 7 May 2025 19:13 (one month ago)
Yes, two summarizers is completely unnecessary.
― Blake the Messenger (Tom D.), Wednesday, 7 May 2025 19:18 (one month ago)
lol, even in audio, keown manages to seem a skulking, malevolent presence
― LocalGarda, Wednesday, 7 May 2025 19:19 (one month ago)
I feel like it's still worse when it's Ferdinand but...is it?

Did it hit his hand? Yes.Was his hand extended away from his body? Yes.
Weird that Hakimi didn’t seem to notice it, tho. Terrible penalty, after all that.

He didn't even seem like he was looking at the ball tbf to him. He had a poor game generally, as an aside.
Some brilliant players in this PSG side. Arsenal a bit blunt really, Arteta reminds me of Rafa Benitez
― LocalGarda, Wednesday, 7 May 2025 20:35 (one month ago)
i mean it was technically a penalty, but it did feel like a strange decision. no-one seemed to notice or care. not that matters, arsenal have looked limp over both legs and deserve to go out. arteta out and he can take his silly lightbulb and artful dodgers with him.

― hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Friday, 9 May 2025 10:15 (one month ago)
Seems like we're stuck with this ridiculous one commentator and two summarizers set up.

― LocalGarda, Saturday, 31 May 2025 19:17 (three weeks ago)
Inter defender there maybe get your body behind it instead of curtseying to avoid a handball
― LocalGarda, Saturday, 31 May 2025 19:25 (three weeks ago)
Di Marco is struggling. Terrible defending from him for PSG's first too
― Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 31 May 2025 20:00 (three weeks ago)

― Blake the Messenger (Tom D.), Saturday, 31 May 2025 20:32 (three weeks ago)
Yeah that goal with the backheel outrageous. Mad how PSG took so long to realise France is prob the best youth factory in the world so maybe just sign fellas from your own country.
― LocalGarda, Saturday, 31 May 2025 20:38 (three weeks ago)
watching this in my local Italian cafe. would describe the mood now as sombre.

I am in Málaga. Disgusted by how many locals are up for PSG

yup, and there it is!

― imago, Saturday, 31 May 2025 21:05 (three weeks ago)
One thing that's apparent with this new CL league format is that as long as you can scrape by with a few results early on, you're good. Liverpool topping the league table made no real difference at all
― Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 31 May 2025 21:22 (three weeks ago)
Yeah that was a joke. But after tonight they'll certainly be getting their gerrymandering in place for next year.
― LocalGarda, Saturday, 31 May 2025 21:29 (three weeks ago)
Mad how PSG took so long to realise France is prob the best youth factory in the world so maybe just sign fellas from your own country.
yeah I mean...kinda
It's more that they've concentrated on signing on really good players for lots of money rather than superstar players for loadsamoney
Their midfield is completely Iberian, Kvaratskhelia Armenian, Hakimi Moroccan, Keeper Italian, etc.
They're still a very cosmopolitan team, they've just changed their attitude towards team building. And they've obviously got an excellent manager who's led that change
― Number None, Saturday, 31 May 2025 22:29 (three weeks ago)
and they're still cunts obv, but it's hard to dislike how they play the game
― Number None, Saturday, 31 May 2025 22:30 (three weeks ago)
True, I guess I mean more the front three, plus Kvaradona.
Separate point but Hakimi is absolutely amazing.
― LocalGarda, Saturday, 31 May 2025 22:41 (three weeks ago)
handsome bastard too
― Number None, Saturday, 31 May 2025 22:54 (three weeks ago)
