EPL fans can moan about referees and VAR all they like but they should check out Scottish referees sometime. Anyway, as I do periodically, I annoyed myself by looking at Rangers FC's stats for the season. In their last 8 games in Scotland (League and League Cup) Rangers have been awarded 8 penalties (it's actually 9 in their last 10). They missed two of them but, nonetheless, James Tavernier (that's the right back, James Tavernier) is now averaging a goal every second game for them - a scoring rate few of their strikers have been able to match in the last few seasons. To be scrupulously fair though, Celtic get their fair share of dubious penalty decisions too.

When we brought Brendan back to Celtic two years ago, it was done with complete trust and belief in his ability to lead the club into a new era of sustained success. Unfortunately, his conduct and communication in recent months have not reflected that trust.

In June, both Michael Nicholson and I expressed to Brendan that we were keen to offer him a contract extension, to reaffirm the club’s full backing and long-term commitment to him. He said he would need to think about it and revert. Yet in subsequent press conferences, Brendan implied that the club had made no commitment to offer him a contract. That was simply untrue.

We met with Brendan regularly, including in December last year and at the start of the summer, with regular dialogue in between, to discuss and agree our collective strategy, priorities, and approach. Every player signed and every player sold during his tenure was done so with Brendan’s full knowledge, approval, and endorsement. Any insinuation otherwise is absolutely false.

His later public statements about transfers and club operations came entirely out of the blue. At no point prior to those remarks had he raised any such concerns with me, Michael, or any member of the Board or executive team. In reality, he was given final say over all football matters and was consistently backed in the recruitment process — including record investment in players he personally identified and approved.

When his comments were made publicly, I sought to address them directly. Brendan and I met for over three hours at his home in Scotland to discuss the issue. Despite ample opportunity, he was unable to identify a single instance where the club had obstructed or failed to support him. The facts did not match his public narrative.

Regrettably, his words and actions since then have been divisive, misleading, and self-serving. They have contributed to a toxic atmosphere around the club and fuelled hostility towards members of the executive team and the Board. Some of the abuse directed at them, and at their families, has been entirely unwarranted and unacceptable.

Wowsers. Never really quite understood why they'd let him back after the way he fucked off the last time, but looks like the door is firmly nailed shut now. I figured the speed with which they announced an external interim meant this wasn't entirely unexpected, but I suspect there were some pointy sticks in his back edging him exitwards rather than the results and play just being shite.

Honestly, good riddance to Rodgers, I don't care how much he won as Celtic manager I've never liked him and never trusted him. We've been in decline since we were out of the Champions League at the start of the year, Maeda's goals last season made us look better than we were. He drove Kyogo out of the club, Kuhn's form mysteriously nosedived, he messed Hatate about and then Maeda this season, his signings have been mostly mediocre and sometimes inexplicable - how many wingers do you need when you've got so few strikers? Don't want Ange back byw.

Ach, we were good to watch under Ange. If we're regressing, which we seem to be, we might as well regress to a time we had a likeable manager with a watchable team who actually wanted to play for him.

I have zero faith in our ability to get this right this time, so if we're going down the well-worn panic-button route of second chances, we might as well.

Despite the dross Rodgers brought to the club, we've still got the best squad in Scotland, if M'ON and Maloney could at least get Hatate and Maeda motivated again that would help.
