Decided to bite the bullet. Haven't started a thread in many years.
Will Arsenal finally win the league? Will Liverpool be worse despite spending 200m? Will Man City get relegated due to 115 charges or grimly return to form? Will Man United stop being funny? Can even one promoted team stay up? How angry can Newcastle fans get?
Have at it!
― LocalGarda, Thursday, 14 August 2025 16:36 (four months ago)
Something about Spurs. Setpieces/violent roughhousing?

Hooray! Looking forward to watching MOTD with the boy and not otherwise engaging unless Liverpool win something and there's another parade.
Oh and beating that cunt from Mumford & Sons at FPL again. Is there an ILX FPL league out there?
― Proust Ian Rush (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 14 August 2025 16:43 (four months ago)
You won't watch it live? I have to say through a combo of getting older, TV subscriptions, Liverpool being fairly consistently good, and general ennui of life, I am prob deeper in than ever. Several podcasts a week, BT and Sky at home etc. Maybe also Liverpool finally winning the league then repeating it means football doesn't have the grinding painful anxiety it had every season when I was younger. I can enjoy it more.
― LocalGarda, Thursday, 14 August 2025 16:48 (four months ago)
i look forward to another season of grinding painful anxiety
― baka mitai guy (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 14 August 2025 16:51 (four months ago)
Tbh after I posted that I started thinking how anxious I was even when we were miles ahead last year.
― LocalGarda, Thursday, 14 August 2025 16:55 (four months ago)
I dunno, it's so hard to find a stream these days and I just have so much to do every Saturday anyway. Might be changing jobs soon though so maybe things will change a bit. It's something to talk about at family gatherings, though the family still in Liverpool either support Everton or Forest (long story)
― Proust Ian Rush (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 14 August 2025 17:04 (four months ago)
All three promoted teams to go straight back down for, I think, the third season in a row?Have seen a couple of pundits tip Leeds to buck the trend at the expense of Wolves

A couple of evil pundits.

― LocalGarda, Thursday, 14 August 2025 17:18 (four months ago)
West Ham not great?
West Ham will be fine I reckon. Brentford seem the best candidates to keep one of the new teams up but I doubt it tbh. I reckon City will win it. My football consumption (other than League 1) is just Second Captains and 3min highlights on YouTube
― crisp, Thursday, 14 August 2025 17:25 (four months ago)
Brentford hiring Keith Andrews with zero management experience is a brave move (though to be fair he does have some assistant manager experience, though to be even fairer it was for MK Dons and they were relegated that season)
― Proust Ian Rush (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 14 August 2025 17:30 (four months ago)
Definitely a worry. He is red hot favourite to be sacked first.
― LocalGarda, Thursday, 14 August 2025 17:33 (four months ago)
I wish Keith well obviously as long as he finishes below us
― baka mitai guy (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 14 August 2025 17:39 (four months ago)
Bournemouth have decided to set the fifa setting to ultimate for iriola and he's clearly done a great job but I think they'll struggle , same with forest. not enough to go down tho probably. in amongst all the money lfc are throwing around I hope I've missed them extending konate's contract or are they going to let him leave for nothing next summer?if lfc don't win tmrw then the winless in the league streak stretches to what 5 games?slot out in that case.
― oscar bravo, Thursday, 14 August 2025 20:21 (four months ago)
I think city will be closer to last season version than 2019-2024 version.think arsenal will win the league.
― oscar bravo, Thursday, 14 August 2025 20:24 (four months ago)
Sounds like Konate could be off. There were even a few rumours Real might try to buy him this summer.
― LocalGarda, Thursday, 14 August 2025 21:07 (four months ago)
I think they need to keep him if at all possible. the way the team sets up this season him and vvd will have to do a tonne of one on one defending and I trust both of them to manage that, not sure anyone we've been linked with could cope as well. of course it helps to have allisson mind you.
― oscar bravo, Thursday, 14 August 2025 21:13 (four months ago)
I know it's twenty mins in but feel like there's not a lot of attacking coherence in Liverpool at all.
― LocalGarda, Friday, 15 August 2025 19:23 (four months ago)
Good game this. Liverpool all over the place defensively
― groovypanda, Friday, 15 August 2025 20:43 (four months ago)
Never in doubt (that Mo would score in the opening game).
― Maggy Scraggle, Friday, 15 August 2025 20:58 (four months ago)
What a game. Unbelievably sad to see Mo crying at the final whistle as the whole stadium sings for Jota.
I think Liverpool's problem is midfield exposing the defence. Wirtz is quality but isn't going to do anything besides attack. Szobo at 8 is too undisciplined, and Gravy is suspended. That said, Konate was terrible tonight.
Ekitike looks brilliant tho, exciting player. Wirtz still settling but love how his first touch is almost always a pass.
Could be a mental season with this attacking setup but I hope they find a more controlled structure for the sake of my health.
― LocalGarda, Friday, 15 August 2025 21:04 (four months ago)
indisciplined*
For three seasons we’ve had more points than any other team in this league, which is incredible. That’s how you have all the consistency. Now we have to do it in a season to have one more point or the same amount of points and more goals different than any other team. That’s the objective.”
apparently this isn't even true, man city have more, but also... this is why people dislike arteta. he makes it sound like they need to just flukily be top of the league when the season ends having done the harder bit of having a good average points score.
― LocalGarda, Saturday, 16 August 2025 09:47 (four months ago)

Feel like even the half time narrative is a bit like "well United carrying a threat with their new signings" but they were good against any of the big teams last year? Prob should have beaten Liverpool, plenty good against Arsenal also. I guess I'm saying today isn't really a good barometer.
― LocalGarda, Sunday, 17 August 2025 16:27 (four months ago)
Arsenal spending the summer devising new genius prog ways to push the medium of footballing set pieces forward and ending up with "so what if...what if we shove over the opposition keeper and then make the referee's life hell for six months if he notices?"

At one point this evening, while chasing the game, Amorim had Mount and Mbeumo playing at wing back so he could keep three centre backs on the pitch
I've never seen a manager remain so inexplicably wedded to a single specialised formation while losing game after game and barely threatening the opposition
It's truly bizarre

Since Amorim took charge last November, they have won seven Premier League games out of 29, scoring 33 goals. For all the belief in Amorim, for all the mitigating circumstances around his appointment, results have been terrible and performances not much better. This isn’t just bad by United’s lofty standards. In the Premier League era, dating back to 1992, there have been just 13 cases of a manager picking up fewer than 28 points from his first 29 games. Among these 13 are some of the most infamous managerial tenures in the competition’s history: Steve Kean at Blackburn Rovers (26 points), Alan Ball at Manchester City (26 points), Mark Hughes and Harry Redknapp at a chaotic Queens Park Rangers (24 points), Mike Walker at Everton (23 points), John Gorman at Swindon Town (22 points) and David Moyes at Sunderland (20 points).

I already said this last season, but even in the extremely unlikely event that he "turns things around" there's simply no way he goes from this kind of form to competing for top 6 or whatever. It'd be completely unprecedented in world football. He might get a point or a win against Burnley. That'll be looked on as "progress". Then put we'll in plucky performances against Chelsea and City (while still losing), that'll buy him a few more games, which he'll also lose, and then it's October and the season's basically unsalvageable already. The Utd Way.

Sources close to Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) — the body which oversees refereeing in England — have acknowledged an error was made in that passage — that there should not have been a VAR intervention — and Salisbury’s removal from Sunday’s game at Anfield reflects this. PGMOL chief Howard Webb also contacted Fulham later on Saturday regarding the incident.
this shit is a fucking shambles. everyone watching the game can see it's not a foul apart from the two blokes studying a slow-motion video over and over again, and to top it off it wasn't even within the rules of var for them to check it.
all that var and other edicts from on high like 'let it flow' have done is make referees clueless and terrified, with a more nebulous sense of accountability than ever. the prominence of this system of punishment reflects that too, like it's so clearly broken that they have to have a very public way of blaming individuals to cover for that.
― LocalGarda, Sunday, 31 August 2025 13:21 (four months ago)
refs when given the space to be clueless and terrified have a strong tendency towards the benefit of three or four clubs again and again

Lots of organisations have a problem with incompetent people falling upwards, but the prem also seems to have the opposite, managers who prove their worth again and again but still keep getting sacked.

― Proust Ian Rush (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 9 September 2025 20:18 (four months ago)
Hilarious how someone thinks Marinakis has a reputation, or that its in any way threatened. Its his club, supporters just have to suck it up.

What I do know is that I had two years where it was very, very challenging, but I worked with some fantastic people in the football department. The supporters, we put them through some tough times, but there is no Spurs supporter I come across now who doesn't want to hug me and take me home for dinner, so I must have done something right.

It’s incredible how Forest became as bad at defending set pieces as Spurs were last year, almost overnight. I’m not even sure how that’s possible.
― ShariVari, Friday, 3 October 2025 06:58 (three months ago)
Ten Hag distinctly better than Ange, I reckon. That Ajax team was really exciting and he got a top four finish with United and won a few cups. Ange scraped a Europa League while doing about as badly as could possibly be expected with Spurs. Besides that his achievements are more nebulous, plus his ability to make things worse via the media is remarkable, possibly unrivalled.
― LocalGarda, Friday, 3 October 2025 07:09 (three months ago)

― a hoy hoy, Friday, 3 October 2025 22:09 (three months ago)
pound for pound as in wages on manager, or money spent on players etc, by weight or a more metaphorical sense?
very hard to judge a manager at some clubs now tbh
i think that we are in phase 4 of bosman shockwaves, clubs are now run by groups of players who cannot be coerced, intimidated, ordered or shamed. they can only be motivated, and klopp is dead and ancelotti is on the beach.
i think utd/spurs are particularly vulnerable to this cycle, where toxic ownership and horrendous recruitment (which cannot just be burned like chelsea/city do) have enabled such cliques to knowingly or otherwise form and just refuse to up tools.
numerous managers at spurs have now essentially been sacked by the likes of ben davies, who never even had to get nasty about it, he just had to keep showing up and being uncoachable.
tactics fairly irrelevant, you either have a board that will sell the players who wont perform for you or you are walking dead from day one.
― tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Saturday, 4 October 2025 04:07 (three months ago)
I meant it in a general metaphorical sense I suppose. But taking into account money spent, talent available to him, size of the club, etc
A lot of Utd fans would agree with you on the players thing. There is a widespread belief that a persistent clique of tool downers have gotten successive managers sacked despite the fact that the squad has turned over multiple times since the Moyes era
But on your last point, no Utd manager has been backed in getting rid of players he doesn't fancy like Amorim. In the year or so he's been in charge, Sancho, Rashford, Garnacho, Onana, Antony and Hojlund have all be frozen out and subsequently moved on
The veteran players left are Bruno (whatever you think about him, he's busted a gut for every manager he's played for), Maguire (shite but a trier), Dalot (one of the dumbest footballers of all time, probably uncoachable) and Shaw (talented crock, definite tool-downing tendencies, but Amorim seems to rate him)
That's not say that squad doesn't still bear the mark of the horrendous recruitment of past decade but it's one he's been allowed to shape pretty much to his own specifications
The thing that continues to baffle me about Amorim is his unwillingness to try something, anything different. Surely when you're this under the cosh you'd throw everything at the wall in an attempt to turn things around? But he literally says on a weekly basis, "I only know one way to play". I mean that's a fucking mental thing for a football coach to say, especially a young one
He will die on this hill (eventually) and I don't understand why
― Number None, Saturday, 4 October 2025 09:00 (three months ago)
Didn't Berrada and Wilcox institute a 'two years to prove yourself or you're out' thing? That would explain Hojlund, Onana, Sancho and Antony (two weeks, for the latter). Arguably, Rashford could/should have gone sooner. Letting Garnacho go looks like a bad decision but he does seem like a terrible bell end.
Going all-in with Amorim was fair enough, and part of that 'all-in' was an agreement that he would clear out the squad (he did similar at Sporting). After so much failure, it looks like madness.

After his performance at Plymouth it's astonishing that anyone is interested in his opinion about anything, he should be a team captain on A Question of Sport or something (is that still on?)

youtube was pushing me towards a scholes/nicky butt podcast which had tim sherwood as guest, the rage bait headline was sherwood claiming zidane wouldnt have coped with the prem because it was too physical. almost clicked just to see him try to sell this take to noted prem great and physical speciman paul scholes.

on the podcast thing, I reckon a big reason is boring exercise. I use a rowing machine most mornings and I don't like listening to fiction, so the slightly premium option is an audiobook, tho even then I'll buy some fairly trashy shit, with occasionally interesting history or political stuff. But often just need something vaguely okay to divert me away from the pain and breathlessness.

It's the podcast sublime, which is a bit like the antiques show sublime: there are so many podcasts and antique shows and yet I don't know anyone who listens to the same podcasts, or has appeared on one, OR anyone who has appeared on an antiques show. How can there be this many people? When it eventually happens, it will open a rift in my being and we shall all be bathed in eternal light.

am I alone in thinking Liverpool's disallowed goal wasn't that controversial? On the 'consistency' argument maybe, but it seems to me if you're in an offside position and you have to duck out of the way of a shot then you're probably interfering

Not stand offside maybe?

the newcastle game a few years back, everything went in
I think spurs have been as bad as that many times since then and gotten away with it as far as scoreline goes
i think they are the most prone to 3/10 performances i have ever seen a team in a prolonged run, i trace it back to the everton PEH mourinho game where something broke and had never recovered

― Sgt. Biscuits, Wednesday, 3 December 2025 20:15 (one month ago)
no worldies in this one. ugly scrambles and deflections all round
― Sgt. Biscuits, Wednesday, 3 December 2025 20:17 (one month ago)
Villa's game plan is to appeal for spurious penalties they have nobody to take
― Sgt. Biscuits, Wednesday, 3 December 2025 20:18 (one month ago)
Villa's game plan is to attempt to manifest their own karmic Sheffield Utd "ghost goal" and then just score an actual one while everyone is confused
― Sgt. Biscuits, Wednesday, 3 December 2025 20:26 (one month ago)
boring, high xG goals scored from inside the box by your main striker, what a tonic

― Edward Albee Sure (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 December 2025 21:03 (one month ago)
like it's amazing, it's not even like the past few years where the team was leaky in defense but decent in attack, or vice versa, they can't even build an attack with any level of competency, there's just zero linkup between midfield and the forwards. they might as well be in separate stadiums.
― Edward Albee Sure (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 December 2025 21:06 (one month ago)

Bleak stuff at Anfield.
― LocalGarda, Wednesday, 3 December 2025 21:40 (one month ago)
I said that at 0-0.
Nice for Wirtz to... be involved in a goal that was stolen from him by the grey men in grey suits.
Not sure we even deserve a point here but pushing for the three now.

― LocalGarda, Wednesday, 3 December 2025 22:12 (one month ago)
ref absolutely determined to give Liverpool one last attack there
― Number None, Wednesday, 3 December 2025 22:13 (one month ago)
Ah there was easily more to be added, one substitution and plenty rolling around.

Liverpool meltdown continues to baffle me. They look like a bunch of lads who have never played alongside each other before.

I remember when a scudetto-winning AC Milan snaffled Davids, Reiziger, Bogarde and Kluivert from the Ajax team that beat them in the CL and young me thought they'd be unstoppable for years to come
But none of them worked out and Milan went into freefall for a couple of seasons
Always think of that when teams have a "best transfer window ever"
― Number None, Thursday, 4 December 2025 15:22 (one month ago)
I think there's just been too much team churn, plus a certain amount of hubris. They replaced the entire midfield in one summer a couple of years ago and remarkably that seemed to work ok. They tried to do the same with the forward line this summer and... not so much.
― Maggy Scraggle, Thursday, 4 December 2025 15:32 (one month ago)
I remember after Hillsborough when Kenny was going to all the funerals, that sense of overriding gloom, and then at the end of it we get Graeme fucking Souness. This isn't like that, please.
― giving you schtick (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 4 December 2025 16:07 (one month ago)
I'm not too worried about the future in general. It's a good squad still, very far away from some of the absolute shit we had in past slumps. Can't get too upset when we won the league last year, spent my whole life praying for that to happen even once.
But it is tough to watch at the moment for sure.
― LocalGarda, Thursday, 4 December 2025 17:03 (one month ago)

Villa good value for the lead
Watkins breaking down a few too many attacks though
― Number None, Saturday, 6 December 2025 13:15 (one month ago)
was gonna say I thought McGinn's been the weak link so far but he just played a nice ball out wide
Villa are finding Watkins out left pretty consistently, Arsenal pressing high to force the long ball but also with a makeshift CB pairing
― Sgt. Biscuits, Saturday, 6 December 2025 13:19 (one month ago)

I know Arsenal have been prone to hilarious sudden downfalls but our next five games are Brugge in the CL, Wolves, Everton, Palace in the League Cup and Brighton. Wolves is the most perfect fixture you can have after that defeat.
― a hoy hoy, Saturday, 6 December 2025 14:37 (one month ago)
no yeah you're still the favourites really. getting the yearly Villa disappointment out of the way early maybe for the best, would expect a different game when we for some reason have to play you again later this month

Notwithstanding the predictable 3pms today we do seem to be firmly and happily in fixture pileup silly season now, Everton rounding out the European places once again and all

― oscar bravo, Saturday, 6 December 2025 22:48 (one month ago)
Team is suffering. Not the time for a solo run about himself. He's a legend for Liverpool but he hasn't played well enough to merit a starting place this season.
― LocalGarda, Saturday, 6 December 2025 23:46 (one month ago)
it's also weird cos I don't think he has been made a scapegoat. like if lfc had any other fit cbs then I think vvd and konate would have been benched by slot for some games. frwd positions is where they have options so that's where he can try out different combos.
― oscar bravo, Saturday, 6 December 2025 23:56 (one month ago)
He absolutely hasn't. It's egotistical to the extreme. He also has played terribly. To come out on a night when the team scored three goals as if he was the key missing element is mad too. If he wants to leave, which I assume he does, then I agree he must be sold after this.

― oscar bravo, Sunday, 21 December 2025 07:28 (two weeks ago)
the reds were good calls, that was a foul and would not have stood our way, the ref by and large started to enjoy ruling against us i think (that's not the same as ruling for the opposition, but it does happen)
― Wichita Referee's Assistant (darraghmac), Sunday, 21 December 2025 08:56 (two weeks ago)
It's hard to tell how strong the push is, he's already leaped by that stage and Romero makes an absolute meal of it to try and get a foul.
MVDV should have got a red for the Isak challenge also.

― Wichita Referee's Assistant (darraghmac), Sunday, 21 December 2025 09:29 (two weeks ago)
I can't believe how brainless Liverpool were in the closing stages. But it's not the first time I've seen it, far from it. Slot seems to have some set of tactics for when we go ahead that are supposed to control the game, but have the exact opposite effect. From what I can see, the way we play when we are looking to score or behind is more dominant and sees us keeping the ball more effectively, the defensive shape and movement and decision-making in possession are absolutely dire. Even accepting that obv opposition might sit back a bit if they're ahead. Yesterday was very like the Everton game where we collapsed completely. Not one player stopped, slowed it down, and played a simple pass in that iffy finale. I like Gravenberch a lot but he's prob more an 8 really. Jones looks good when the tails are up but not sure he can dictate tempo. We would benefit so much from a metronomic tempo-controlling midfielder.

I guess that's Villa feeling bad but not £35 million bad and half-heartedly tossing a few vaguely viable suggestions at the wall. Liverpool poker-faced as is their right. It's harsh on the young fella
Tim Vickery is apparently similarly baffled by Villa's signing of Alysson from Gremio, you would perhaps be hoping for some of that inexplicable Morgan Rogers juice there

Terrible again from Spurs, a mirror image of the Palace game where they do ok in the first half, score semi-accidentally from a corner and totally cede the game to the opposition in the second, but unable to keep a clean sheet this time.
― ShariVari, Sunday, 4 January 2026 16:42 (six days ago)
Liverpool so shit, reminds me of the end of the Rodgers era, afraid to attack but not solid at the back even playing it safe. No heart or character to the team at all, seems clear the coach has lost them.

Liverpool spent like half a billion this summer on top of a league winning team. The “oh but look at the bench” thing seems absolutely ridiculous. But then to compare it to Arsenal who have had multiple injury issues over the past 6 weeks then makes it hilarious. Poor babies.
― a hoy hoy, Sunday, 4 January 2026 20:13 (six days ago)
Ekitike and Isak were injured and Salah is at Afcon. That's why the bench was basically devoid of options.
And Arsenal have spent hundreds of millions more than Liverpool in the last five seasons. Not even close.
Still, at least they have the second placed finishes to show for it.

Nobody said woe is us, he just made a normal football thread statement about the bench being empty and you had to gloat from a position of no reasoning. Only Man United have spent more than Arsenal in recent years but that's prob why they have won a few more cups.
― LocalGarda, Sunday, 4 January 2026 20:35 (six days ago)

― Donald Crump (Tom D.), Sunday, 4 January 2026 20:39 (six days ago)
I did not gloat. I just find it hilarious that Liverpool went from being pegged as some sort of unstoppable monster this summer to being hard done by. No-one said literally the words “woe is us” but “look, we have to consider the kids!” is traditionally such a statement.
― a hoy hoy, Sunday, 4 January 2026 20:41 (six days ago)

― a hoy hoy, Sunday, 4 January 2026 20:58 (six days ago)
you mocked another person's post which was a normal statement. that's not lightness and joy, it's just a bemusing level of hubris for an arsenal fan in january.
― LocalGarda, Sunday, 4 January 2026 20:59 (six days ago)

"slightly better" in that we're somehow 6th in the table, which is really a reflection of how terrible everyone bar the top 3 have been
but after 14 months in charge he has 15 wins out of 46 games in the league and has won back-to-back league games once
he's the worst pound for pound PL manager of all time imo

― Dance Yourself Dizzy To The Music of Time (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 5 January 2026 10:47 (five days ago)
He's been saying mad shit in interviews pretty much since the beginning, so I'm not sure that can be said to be strategic or pivotal. I would say that hastened him towards the sack, and not just because of the board, but the fans. Just a range of crazily open, loose, navel-gazing and overly dramatic comments. Not what you need when a club is beleaguered. That has been a constant.
But think it's a stretch to say he's been doing a good job or hasn't merited the sack. If anything it's a surprise they stuck with him this long, imo.
I wonder is there also a chance they'll go full patsy and get someone in who'll be part of an Ineos structure and follow orders. Saying that just cos I see Laurent Blanc is also among the favorites.
― LocalGarda, Monday, 5 January 2026 10:50 (five days ago)

Brailsford surveyed his task as Head of Doping and concluded that the problems at Utd were beyond any gas that he, or any other mortal, could source
interesting dynamic where Southgate is a knight and got England to to some international finals, so the mainstream discourse has to straight-facedly be that he might potentially be the solution they need because why wouldn't he be, while Utd fans nervously smash the downvote button on BBC Sport

Should follow Celtic's lead and get Fergie to manage them for the rest of the season.
― Wilfried Nuance (Tom D.), Tuesday, 6 January 2026 15:24 (four days ago)
surely the top brains in sports management didn't sack their manager mid-season, despite his results improving from last season, without a clear replacement already lined uo?
― Parallel Heinz (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 6 January 2026 15:39 (four days ago)
I mean the Ole idea is horrendous obviously but our results haven't actually improved
The table is very much lying on this case

I'm not saying Amorim was doing a good job but I don't see an emergency so bad that he had go without a successor being planned
― Parallel Heinz (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 6 January 2026 16:47 (four days ago)
Sounds a bit like he was pushed before he jumped tbh.
― Wilfried Nuance (Tom D.), Tuesday, 6 January 2026 16:50 (four days ago)
this is what happened, per The Athletic
Although the seeds of Amorim’s demise at Manchester United were sewn at various stages, the ground finally fell from beneath him during a tempestuous encounter with Wilcox on Friday.Amorim, people at United would argue, was the catalyst, erupting when discussion turned to tactics and transfers. Amorim had sensed a creep onto his territory during recent weeks and the result has been described, by sources close to the club, as a “massive fall-out” between the pair.In their face-to-face meeting at Carrington, Wilcox suggested to Amorim that the players were struggling to gain trust in his 3-4-2-1 system and had become confused over his vision. Amorim would train the team in a back four, only for a back three to be selected in games. They also sensed he lacked faith in them due to his selections and public statements.Amorim responded that the players needed to be changed. Wilcox said he wanted to work through the issues, evolving the squad over time but sticking with Amorim. Amorim reacted by saying he wished to leave the club and would be calling his agent.

who knows the truth of it, but this is a guy who's threatened to quit in practically every other press conference

Is there something about the back three formation that makes its proponents such pigheaded zealots?
― Wilfried Nuance (Tom D.), Tuesday, 6 January 2026 16:57 (four days ago)
I've never see one quite as zealous as Amorim. He even has an origin story
Amorim started working as a manager in 2018–19, with third division team Casa Pia. After losing his first two games and, with his pride hurt and doubts setting in, he announced if he lost the third game he would quit. In the next match, he changed his system and played a back three for the first time. With the new system working, Casa Pia embarked on an unbeaten run.

Can I introduce you to Wilfried Nancy?
― Wilfried Nuance (Tom D.), Tuesday, 6 January 2026 17:42 (four days ago)
tbf Amorim's zealotry seems to lead to turgid dreariness whereas Nancy's is more Billy Smart's Circus.
― Wilfried Nuance (Tom D.), Tuesday, 6 January 2026 17:44 (four days ago)
Reading the various pieces today it seems mad how much the Jim Reaper is sticking his nose in. It seems he's tried to have a say in transfers, formation, suggested Mbeumo should be a wing back, and advised Martinez on rehabbing from injury. Seems a fairly big problem if this clueless tyrant won't keep his beak out.

always the mark of an idiot director when they think they've got anything valuable to contribute to football decisions

Director of football Jason Wilcox has spoken to Fletcher and his former United team-mates Solskjaer and Carrick about taking the role, while another former United player Ruud van Nistelrooy is also believed to be a contender.
the short-term plan seems to be basically be 'get someone the fans love to take heat off wilcox/berrada/ineos' i guess. as such be surprised if fletcher or carrick get it.

we've been fairly shit, but Burnley scored an extremely jammy goal and Utd have had a goal disallowed and two cleared off the line
Fletcher's weird inexplicable thing (because every post-Ferguson manager must have one) is playing Cunha on the right wing and Dorgu on the left

in this week's popbitch:
- Amorim often didn’t even bother going into the dressing room to speak to the players if they’d lost the game.- Big boss Jim Ratcliffe thinks he knows so much about everything that he’s told the club doctors how to treat players and even lectures the masseurs on how to do massage right.- Cycling’s Dave Brailsford was actually in charge of football affairs for a while. No-one at the club really knew what he did. Except wander around sticking his nose into every department with the explanation, “I don’t need to be here. I live in Monaco. I’m only here for you guys”.

Haha. Enjoyed Keane's comments last night afterwards where he said "Ferguson and Gill are hanging around like a bad smell"
