this one went to my school. we sold him to you then loaned him back for the season: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyle_Walker

this one we sold to you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyle_Naughton. but not much sign of him in the team yet.

caek, Thursday, 26 November 2009 12:32 (fifteen years ago)

Walker in particular is hilarious.

caek, Thursday, 26 November 2009 12:33 (fifteen years ago)

good touch for a lad who runs the 100m in about 10.5.

caek, Thursday, 26 November 2009 12:34 (fifteen years ago)

naughton has had a few appearances, i think he's got a good choice of being the backup right back next season (hutton rubbish) if the whispered micah richards move doesn't materialise.

think he's got a sub appearance or two at right mid as well, so looks like he's at least going to get first team exposure while we see how he develops.

Louis Cll (darraghmac), Thursday, 26 November 2009 12:48 (fifteen years ago)

i wonder if he is friends with thudd

caek, Thursday, 26 November 2009 12:49 (fifteen years ago)

We need a new footballing mascot every season really Kitson -> Bullard -> Thudd.

I tried to do it with qualified chemical engineer Lolofinjana last season but it didn't quite work :(

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 26 November 2009 12:50 (fifteen years ago)

Also, only player to start every single game this season. I feel bad for not having paid enough attention to him but maybe its because he hasn't played as many of the 40-yard wonderpasses.

Where's that picture of Huddlestone and Lennon wearing pink shorts and playing in the sea? It needs to be here.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 26 November 2009 12:52 (fifteen years ago)

there's the one with his overhang gut in pink shorts on the other thread.

Louis Cll (darraghmac), Thursday, 26 November 2009 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

Also, only player to start every single game this season.

palacios/thudd such a *huge* improvement on zokora/jenas. 90% of our improvement on last few seasons right there.

Louis Cll (darraghmac), Thursday, 26 November 2009 14:00 (fifteen years ago)

Best thing about this is that Modric is still to come.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 26 November 2009 14:23 (fifteen years ago)

could spell trouble for thudd, that, even though i'm assuming it's krancjar that'll make way.

Krancjar Out?

E Poxy Thee Fule (Tom D.), Thursday, 26 November 2009 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

(wish i knew how to graphically illustrate thudd's sweeping passes tbh, just showing his movement doesn't do him full justice i feel)

Louis Cll (darraghmac), Thursday, 26 November 2009 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

krancjar isn't likely to start ahead of modric, but the question might well be determined by form, fitness and the opposition. i don't think he'll lack games, given that he can play behind the striker or on either wing.

Louis Cll (darraghmac), Thursday, 26 November 2009 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

I'm a full convert to Kranjcar after his performance last week - not sure you can work him and Modric into the same team but he's way better than Robbie Keane or for that matter Lennon either out on the left or in the hole.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 26 November 2009 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

wish i knew how to graphically illustrate thudd's sweeping passes

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 26 November 2009 14:47 (fifteen years ago)

eh, using only the /code/ tags, that'd be pretty good work

Louis Cll (darraghmac), Thursday, 26 November 2009 14:58 (fifteen years ago)

krancjar is great, but he is essentially a not-quite-as-good modric, so fitting them both in poses questions.

they play together for croatia, right? might be worth looking into. could be our own xavi-iniesta axis right there, BUT WITH THUDD. my god, it's a monster.

But assuredly it was in that Word of God itself which was in the beginning with God and was God, namely, in the wisdom itself of God, apart from time, at what time that wisdom must needs appear in the flesh. Therefore, since without any commencement of time, the Word was in the beginning, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, it was in the Word itself without any time, at what time the Word was to be made flesh and dwell among us. And that Word was YOMP.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 10:47 (fifteen years ago)

Anyway having JJ in midfield may not be a bad thing against Liverpool.

ice cool HOOSicle (darraghmac), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 10:58 (fifteen years ago)

JJ or kranjcar? would have assumed that niko/modric can do a job centrally, though that may be just a touch too attack minded.

that said, jenas midfield is just a touch too nothing-minded.

ice cool HOOSicle (darraghmac), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 10:59 (fifteen years ago)

Definitely not Modric in the centre up against Mascherano, he's way better with more space to play with out on the left. Probably not Kranjcar either given he plays pretty ineffectively there for Croatia.

Every time JJ has come on we start playing in a different way and there's more penetration through the middle of the park. I'd say Palacios-Jenas-Croatians on both flanks is the way to go.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 11:27 (fifteen years ago)

I'd trust Modric to win space in the centre, tbh. And I'm not sure that Liverpool, in their current state (including injuries) need much more than Palacios to handle them through the centre.

I'd much prefer to see us put them on the back foot, though in fairness JJ covers a lot of ground off the ball (though again, in fairness he doesn't seem to do much once he gets there)

Just watched Neville huffing and puffing vs City on MOTD - if Bale has anything close to Bellamy's pace Neville won't even bother chasing him, though he'll likely have a good go at slowing him down early on.

tart w/ a heart (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 18 April 2010 12:08 (fifteen years ago)

just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Sunday, 18 April 2010 18:34 (fifteen years ago)

isn't that a problem defensively?

mizzell, Sunday, 18 April 2010 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

in a week where we have deservedly beaten arsenal and chelsea i'm not sure i'm int he mood to acknowledge any problems.

BAE is a much-improved player, but if it's a choice between the team with him in it or Bale at LB and Palacios in DM, then it's an easy choice.

Thudd's performances in the centre with Modric this week- hardly have given Capello food for thought?

Started every game bar injuries/suspension- Jenas is a fading memory.

Hargreaves has improved hugely since never playing football anymore imo.

There's a place for Thudd in games against teams that will sit back and defend- a full-time DM won't be needed and won't have enough to contribute in attack.

But I doubt he'll go, Capello doesn't seem to fancy him.

This is nonsense - he's (okay maybe was) one of the best long passers of the ball in the Premiership. The problem is you effectively have to build your midfield around him to compensate for his failings and most clubs above say Everton or even Stoke level wouldn't be prepared to do that, because they have more complete players to build teams around.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 13:51 (twelve years ago)

A.R.R.Y. Kane (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 15:39 (twelve years ago)

^^^ OTM. He would have been fine with Parker round there as well I think.

Give him one job to do with the right players around him and he'll do it very well, same as hundreds of good players who can't do everything and anything on the pitch. But why retool your midfield to accommodate him when you already have Modric in there?

This is all Redknapp-era anyway, he's probably not mobile or versatile enough to fit in an AVB team.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 15:46 (twelve years ago)

Modders and Huddlestone didn't really work when they were being played together because Thudd was expected to do most of the defensive work and he's just not quick enough.

I agree, if u mean ANDY

There's not been a lot of mobility with avb's starting xi inc dempsey and sig on wings lately, adebayor lolloping around fifty yards from anyone and parker tripping everyone else up. Think Tom's a Plan B/not-so-secret weapon rather than a regular starter.

Holtby is very incisive and composed and more intelligent in his play than Sigurdsson or Dempsey and can play deep or further advanced. Would imagine Dembele-Sandro-Holtby will be the first choice central midfield, the squad has been reasonably well built from the back upwards but is really threadbare upfront and out wide.

Jake Livermore is also going from the north Londoners to Humberside - on a season-long loan in his case - and Huddlestone questioned Spurs’ policy of off-loading English players.

“The first few years I was there, the philosophy and policy were to buy young British players, such as myself, Aaron Lennon, Gareth Bale, Michael Dawson, Jermaine Jenas, and players like that,” said Huddlestone, who will make his debut at Chelsea on Sunday.

“Now Steve Caulker has gone sold to Cardiff], they’ve let me go, Jake has left and it has gone the opposite way - buying more established international players. I’m not sure if it is good for the club.

“It will be difficult [for Tottenham]. They’ve let a few players go who were used to the Premier League week in, week out. Bringing players in from abroad, as we’ve seen in the past, can take them a while to settle.

“You could see it happening last season. David Bentley left, Jermaine Jenas left [for QPR in January] and they were ready to accept a bid [also from QPR] for Michael Dawson.”

Woeful casemaking there

"fear of putting out" in one's early thirties (darraghmac), Thursday, 15 August 2013 22:18 (eleven years ago)

www.stevegleiber.com/news.htm

Paul Merson has admitted he is heartbroken at Arsenal's decision to sell him to first division Middlesbrough for £4.5million. "I thought I would end my career at Arsenal. When they said I could leave I felt terrible," he told the News of the World.

The news was delivered to Merson by Gunners manager Arsene Wenger yesterday. The Frenchman has made several major signings in the close season and feels he can do without Merson, one of the fans' favourite players. Merson said: "Arsene Wenger came to me and said 'We have been offered £4.5million for you'. "I asked Arsene 'Aren't you going to try to keep me?' and he just said 'No'. He kept saying it was a lot of money for a 29-year-old and he had to take it. "My 15 years with Arsenal was over in 15 minutes. I felt terrible. They didn't make any effort to keep me."

Dennis Bergkamp has cushioned the blow for Arsenal fans with a contract extension which should keep the 28-year-old Dutch international in north London for the rest of his career.

This guy's blog ends here btw, obviously never got over losing Merse

"fear of putting out" in one's early thirties (darraghmac), Thursday, 15 August 2013 23:24 (eleven years ago)

yeah his 40yard dash time should be inching under 5.8 seconds

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Thursday, 15 August 2013 23:27 (eleven years ago)

the line about huddlestone that he was a 16st xabi alonso cast before the swine of english fitba is about as accurate as those sentiments usually are

his notable skill is being able to drop well weighted passes over 20-60 yards with minimal backlift and a lowish trajectory but with a slight backspin so it sits at the feet of the recipient

it's a neat trick to have but it's also the most common such talent for an english midfielder or pseudo midfielder to have, gerrard, carrick, twp &c

his control and short passing are not especially good

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Thursday, 15 August 2013 23:43 (eleven years ago)

disagree obv

his first touch some ways better than most english midfielders

he's considerably better on his second foot than most english footballers

his weighted passes are consistently better, and at their best far better, than other english players

"fear of putting out" in one's early thirties (darraghmac), Thursday, 15 August 2013 23:50 (eleven years ago)

the epl is 70% non english and creative midfielders are probably more like 80% so it's scarcely worth comparing him only to his reliably lumpen compatriots

"fear of putting out" in one's early thirties (darraghmac), Friday, 16 August 2013 00:22 (eleven years ago)

I think Gerrard has a tendency to put too much on those long low passes and Carrick doesn't have Thudd's passing range or cunting ability. Both make up for those shortcomings by being able to move.

one month passes...

He's made a perfect career move. Midfields have to be built around him, and at Spurs this was not the case. He's looking absolutely imperious at Hull. Obviously an England recall would be out of the question as Wilshere is his more-mobile equivalent, although I think Thudd's deep-lying style is more suited to controlled possession football - perhaps Wilshere will develop in this regard. Thudd's a better passer and dead-ball striker. Let the love-in continue!

wilsheres best skill is carrying the ball between the lines with lil bursts then playing off of the attacking midfielders / forwards like ilkay gundogan with a feltham YOI demeanour and haircut

Lama Bloody SwagYurt (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Saturday, 21 September 2013 20:30 (eleven years ago)

cleverley & milner though. keepin it solid bruv

england won't select thudd so this is moot. let's talk about hull. ridiculous flair quotient for supposed lumpen relegation trash

di canio getting rid of one of the only interesting players in that tranche and giving him to wba was probably not the best decision

Lama Bloody SwagYurt (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Saturday, 21 September 2013 20:31 (eleven years ago)

what else are hull doing, is meyler playing, is gamelad brady still being game, who is aluko, why is aluko

Lama Bloody SwagYurt (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Saturday, 21 September 2013 20:33 (eleven years ago)

when Sunderland signed Giaccherini I thought it was the wing-back who played for Italy in the recent Euros and was excited, but I'd gotten the name wrong

C/3 Jenks kakling Neu! military£ absinthe snkkt! pckls Özil JTCF njhtdgs (imago), Saturday, 21 September 2013 20:34 (eleven years ago)

?? that was Giaccherini

Third Rate Zoo Keepers With Tenth Rate Minds (Windsor Davies), Saturday, 21 September 2013 20:37 (eleven years ago)

gamelad brady scored a game finish & assisted the 2nd goal, so steve bruce subbed him off for flair merchant supreme george boyd who set up the winner quite brilliantly

bruce deserves quite a lot of credit for this & how he's set up hull to retain possession and build slowly

elmohamedy (sp?) is a speedy winger/fullback with a decent cross & brain, but thudd & aluko alone make hull worth watching. aluko is like a little buzzing bee who pops up everywhere doing impressive things & skinning opponents. and occasionally thwacking in amazing volleys

this Giaccherini is a striker, maybe they're brothers, Italian football does brothers more than any other major nation I think

I haven't really watched him tbh, but for some reason in my head he's not a million miles away from Weimann in terms of skillset. That could be way off the mark though

Third Rate Zoo Keepers With Tenth Rate Minds (Windsor Davies), Saturday, 21 September 2013 20:39 (eleven years ago)

hes mostly played in attacking midfield in italy i think

Lama Bloody SwagYurt (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Saturday, 21 September 2013 20:40 (eleven years ago)

he is i would guess about 8" shorter than weimz

Lama Bloody SwagYurt (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Saturday, 21 September 2013 20:41 (eleven years ago)

low centre of gravity scampering sub-giovinco supra-stephen hunt lateral utility drone

Lama Bloody SwagYurt (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Saturday, 21 September 2013 20:41 (eleven years ago)

yeah that may not be far off, i'm always taken aback by weimann's heigh when i see him in the flesh. usually imagine him as quite a diminutive chap

Third Rate Zoo Keepers With Tenth Rate Minds (Windsor Davies), Saturday, 21 September 2013 20:42 (eleven years ago)

haha xp

he scored a headed goal in the first game, assumed he was a standard CF

attacking midfield in italy rarely = attacking midfield here, especially when playing alongside conor wickham

Lama Bloody SwagYurt (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Saturday, 21 September 2013 20:46 (eleven years ago)

what are weimann's obvious attributes

i don't notice him much until he's popped up in front of goal. gather he must have pace & awareness as primary skillset

C/3 Jenks kakling Neu! military£ absinthe snkkt! pckls Özil JTCF njhtdgs (imago), Saturday, 21 September 2013 20:50 (eleven years ago)

hes quickish for his size, not especially skilful but can find space and is a good finisher

not dissimilar to the way podolski plays for arsenal or the german nt

Lama Bloody SwagYurt (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Saturday, 21 September 2013 20:52 (eleven years ago)

someone compared him to dempsey on here not so long ago, seemed kinda otm - not necessarily a good footballer but an effective one. works hard, makes good runs, which makes him look quicker than he actually is. as a result he often does that thing of just being in the right place at the right time. gives off the vibe of being a good finisher whilst still missing potloads of chances. endeared himself to the fans by being prepared to accept that he wasn't going to be the central striker and apparently committing fully to being a high energy presence on the flank, tracks back well etc.

Third Rate Zoo Keepers With Tenth Rate Minds (Windsor Davies), Saturday, 21 September 2013 20:53 (eleven years ago)

find it surprising he'd be a #9 then - that sort of player would probably need a skilful & physically dominant player alongside to thrive, mostly for the purpose of distracting defenders

C/3 Jenks kakling Neu! military£ absinthe snkkt! pckls Özil JTCF njhtdgs (imago), Saturday, 21 September 2013 20:54 (eleven years ago)

re: Kuyt Yeahh, maybe. I think Weimann has it in him to be more prolific from the flank than Kuyt was. 12 goals in 38 isn't a bad return for a lad playing in our shower of shite (as we were for much of last year) and I think he could push on well past that if he keeps progressing

Half-time: Hull 0-3 Arsenal

Hull seemed to have got themselves into this game, and missed a great chance through Aluko, but now they’re well out of it. Even if the first two goals owed a lot to deflections, sloppy play – twice by Tom Huddlestone – was part of their undoing and you have to praise Arsenal too.

nakhchivan, Monday, 4 May 2015 20:00 (ten years ago)

Thudd has had a nigh-appalling season

another understated post from (Noodle Vague), Monday, 4 May 2015 20:01 (ten years ago)

the line about huddlestone that he was a 16st xabi alonso cast before the swine of english fitba is about as accurate as those sentiments usually are

his notable skill is being able to drop well weighted passes over 20-60 yards with minimal backlift and a lowish trajectory but with a slight backspin so it sits at the feet of the recipient

it's a neat trick to have but it's also the most common such talent for an english midfielder or pseudo midfielder to have, gerrard, carrick, twp &c

his control and short passing are not especially good

He's made a perfect career move. Midfields have to be built around him, and at Spurs this was not the case. He's looking absolutely imperious at Hull. Obviously an England recall would be out of the question as Wilshere is his more-mobile equivalent, although I think Thudd's deep-lying style is more suited to controlled possession football - perhaps Wilshere will develop in this regard. Thudd's a better passer and dead-ball striker. Let the love-in continue!

the fuck

thoughts you made second posts about (darraghmac), Monday, 4 May 2015 23:33 (ten years ago)

Huddlestone's main virtue relies on having very fast attacking players around him to capitalise on those long balls, he was never going to work well for long in a side as slow as Hull, and that's before you get into his own lack of mobility. Elmohamady is probably their best player and he is no Bale/Lennon.
