waste of a larsson, and a good example of my misgivings about 'can't nominate for another year' rule

but letiss in a walk. best player to play in the premier league

i dont love everything, i love football (darraghmac), Monday, 11 October 2010 15:41 (fifteen years ago)

There's only three months left this year tbf. I'm voting Henrik, absolutely faultless player. Plus I kinda owe him one now.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 11 October 2010 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

can another mod rig this so that votes not for letiss are automatically just self sb's actually

i dont love everything, i love football (darraghmac), Monday, 11 October 2010 15:45 (fifteen years ago)

Hold on a minute, Seaman was a tremendous keeper with a couple of epic blunders blotting his record. If you compare his importance to club and country and his achievements as a player to Le Tiss he's a few light years ahead.

Sidonia von Bork Bork Bork (Noodle Vague), Monday, 11 October 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

just country, and just cos english manager's are philistines

seaman in no way touches letiss for club influence, cmon

Sidonia von Bork Bork Bork (Noodle Vague), Monday, 11 October 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

Voting for David Seaman would be a bit like voting for Oasis on an ILM poll. Just a frumpy choice.

Le Tissier vs Larsson all the way but voting for Le Tissier because if you give this one sop to the Celtic contingent it'll only encourage them.

Comparing Goalies to outfield players is a hapless exercise is the nub of my problem here. Obviously I wd vote for Le Tiss as more aesthetically appealing but on those grounds you will probably have a Hall of Fame featuring 0 keepers.

Sidonia von Bork Bork Bork (Noodle Vague), Monday, 11 October 2010 16:02 (fifteen years ago)

that one save against sheff utd tho- don't give me 'aesthetically pleasing' as an argument against goalies.

the fact that 75% of their mistakes are automatically disasters, that's gonna cost them, sure.

i dont love everything, i love football (darraghmac), Monday, 11 October 2010 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

I was joking about the socks. Am nearly tempted to vote Le Tiss, btw, assume Henke will get in against anyone else when he's re-nommed. But I can't do it.

ailsa, Monday, 11 October 2010 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

To me Le Tissier's loyalty to Southampton makes it hard to judge him honestly. It's like being a genius guitar player who's only ever played in working man's club covers bands.

Should have been done baseball HOF style imho: as many nominees as possible, everyone gets 10/15/20 votes, top 5 percentile make the HOF, bottom 10 percentile get eliminated for the next year of voting.

Henning Berg has three Premier League medals, which is as many as the other four players here combined.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 11 October 2010 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

Voting procedure
To be eligible for the nominating process, a player must have been retired at least five years, and as of 2007, a coach must be retired for five years. Any other contributor such as a team owner or executive can be voted in at any time.[6]

Fans may nominate any player, coach or contributor by simply writing to the Pro Football Hall of Fame via letter or email. The Selection Committee is then polled three times by mail to eventually narrow the list to 25 semifinalists: once in March, one in September, and one in October. In November, the committee then selects 15 finalists by mail balloting.

Nine members of the Selection Committee also serve as a subcommittee known as the Seniors Committee to screen candidates who finished their careers 25 or more years prior.[6] The Seniors Committee then adds two finalists from prior to the modern era, making a final ballot of 17.

The Selection Committee then meets the day before each Super Bowl game to elect a new class. To be elected, a finalist must receive at least 80 percent support from the Board, with at least four, but no more than seven, candidates being elected annually. If less than four candidates get 80 percent of the vote, then the top four vote-getters will get in that year. If more than seven get 80 percent, then only the top seven vote-getters will be inducted.

nommed seaman, voting seaman.

between this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whHyHXnLCIw and his various important penalty saves (sampdoria shootout, spain shootout come to mind) he was p much my childhood hero. well unto he grew a ponytail

also schmiechel is only recognised as being better than seaman because 1. he didn't have stupid facial hair or a ponytail 2. no nayem in his career 3. he won something with his country. The reality is they were both too good and you can't really choose between them.

Sidonia von Bork Bork Bork (Noodle Vague), Monday, 11 October 2010 18:58 (fifteen years ago)

as much as i hate to praise the red faced prick, it's true, i remember schmeicel at his peak was just INFURIATING if you were a fan of another team, watching man u get played off the park and over and over and over again he'd make stunning saves, ridiculous saves, he was definitely a cut above seaman and most other keepers i've seen. as he aged he got a bit ropey and did make his errors, but at peak he was insufferably good.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Monday, 11 October 2010 19:01 (fifteen years ago)

Seaman's woe is largely self-inflicted I feel. He's just got this naffness about him because of the ponytail, the high-profile errors, dancing on ice, 'safe hands', the horrible kits, the way his career ended. That's probably all the bad stuff he ever did and it's really unfair, but it overshadows all the rest for me.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 11 October 2010 19:07 (fifteen years ago)

it's really just that he wasn't as good as schmeichel, tbh. it's not a diss ffs, but it's that simple

Saw Berg play at Highbury here, absolutely masterful performance. Made Kanu look metaphorically impotent on the pitch, and this was in the twilight of his career. Always thought that Ferguson saw him as what McGrath could have been if he'd stayed away from the bottle.

I should have voted Tiss for the obvious reasons, but chiefly cos, well, has there ever been a player that kept a side in the top flight to the extent he did, as often as he did, for as long as he did?

But instead, I went for Frannie. Because, much as we may knock him, with the exception of a loan spell at Forest in 2001, he spent his entire career in the top flight up to his retirement (he turned out for Eastleigh a few times after he retired). Most of the time as a first-choice player. You may think he's a donkey. And he may well have been a donkey. But there's not many donkeys get to be as successful a donkey as him.

Well, the first season after Berg left United, Le Tissier was injured for both games, and each team won one a piece. And really, are you of the honest belief that Wayne Bridge, James Beattie and Marian Pahars are worse players than a 39-year-old Andy Goram, Luke Chadwick, Ronnie Wallwork, Bojan Djordjic and Michael Stewart?

this might be the only thing that enrages ilx' good natured celtic fans, but in terms of his contemporaries larsson is behind ronaldo, rvn, rivaldo, raúl, vieri, henry, trezeguet, batistuta, crespo, recoba, del piero, kluivert, owen, anelka, salas, totti etc etc

during his time at feyenoord he had a 1 in 4 ratio, only rly caught alight in scotland in his late 20s

really the only thing of significance he did was help beat 10-man arsenal in a CL final but even then all he did was complete two decent passes against a massed and confused rearguard

(may be trolling by now but it's got more than an element of truth - trutling maybe)

le tiss is such a better kind of cult player than larsson, like it isn't even comparable - in 50 years we'll only remember larsson for the leg-break video

entrylev leviev (nakhchivan), Monday, 18 October 2010 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

it's comparable, there's a good discussion in there somewhere tbh.

in beating relegation, at least you have to beat three other teams.

cant believe you sb'd me for that (darraghmac), Monday, 18 October 2010 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

Larsson's UEFA cup final performance against Porto is up there with anyone, anytime

Ismael Klata, Monday, 18 October 2010 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

If we're judging this on contributions to title winning teams, it's v.hard to look beyond Henning, though.

O holy ruler of ILF (a hoy hoy), Monday, 18 October 2010 16:06 (fifteen years ago)

This Henrik challoping is kind of entertaining. Dude's won the EPL, Champions League, and almost single-handedly took a team featuring Rab Douglas to a European final. Pointing out that the SPL isn't very good is taking nothing away from his performances outside it for club(s) and country.

I love Matt Le Tissier, btw, and would vote for him against almost anyone else. I do love how Le Tiss is hailed as a hero for staying at a lower level his entire life, but Henke's gets crucified for the same thing (even though he didn't actually do that at all, and early 2000s Martin O'Neill Celtic are a totally different beast from the pish we're putting up with now).

larsson is behind ronaldo, rvn, rivaldo, raúl, vieri, henry, trezeguet, batistuta, crespo, recoba, del piero, kluivert, owen, anelka, salas, totti etc etc

Don't see any of them in this poll.

ailsa, Monday, 18 October 2010 16:38 (fifteen years ago)

Out of that lot I'd have him definitely behind Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Del Piero, and probably Batistuta

Ismael Klata, Monday, 18 October 2010 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

Could be an interesting experiment for all players here actually. Where would you rank Berg among, say, Baresi, Maldini, Ayala, Bratseth, Koeman, Kohler, Sammer, Thuram and May?

Inspector Anthony Slade, Monday, 18 October 2010 16:47 (fifteen years ago)

please turn out to be dom

acoleuthic, Monday, 18 October 2010 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

this might be the only thing that enrages ilx' good natured celtic fans, but in terms of his contemporaries larsson is behind ronaldo, rvn, rivaldo, raúl, vieri, henry, trezeguet, batistuta, crespo, recoba, del piero, kluivert, owen, anelka, salas, totti etc etc

during his time at feyenoord he had a 1 in 4 ratio, only rly caught alight in scotland in his late 20s

To be fair he was mostly used as a wide player at Feyenoord which makes 1 in 4 look pretty good imo.

I'm not setting him up as >Ronaldo, Henry, etc. but his record in Scotland + English League + his performances in 2 European finals + scoring in three different World Cups makes him >>>> Le Tiss or anyone else in this poll.

"People always talk about Ronaldinho, Eto'o, Giuly and everything, but I didn't see them today, I saw Henrik Larsson. He came on, he changed the game, that is what killed the game. Sometimes you talk about Ronaldinho and Eto'o and people like that; you need to talk about the proper footballer who made the difference, and that was Henrik Larsson tonight."

Thierry Henry OTM

underrated football teams I have owned (onimo), Monday, 18 October 2010 16:50 (fifteen years ago)

tbh the fact that he spent all that time in Scottish football and then went and won a European Cup makes him more remarkable, not less

Ismael Klata, Monday, 18 October 2010 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

also 37 goals in 106 internationals is good going

Ismael Klata, Monday, 18 October 2010 16:54 (fifteen years ago)

I'd probably put Berg behind Baresi and ahead of Maldini, but that's not good enough to get my vote

sure, but onimo said larsson had no weaknesses, which is probably true....he was a very good player, but i thought it'd be worth reminding yall of his limits

Out of that lot I'd have him definitely behind Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Del Piero, and probably Batistuta

― Ismael Klata, Monday, 18 October 2010 17:44 (1 hour ago)

this is just insane....there isn't even a comparison between ballon d'or near-misses w/ hundreds of serie a/pl/la liga goals and henrik larsson

as for the henry quote, that was from the same interview where he was being insanely precious about barcelona players diving 'like women', then pledged his future to the club before signing for barca the next year, it was the shittiest praise of all because it was said mainly to spite players like eto'o who had outclassed him in the game

the barcelona forwards were also very enthusiastic about larsson, because he could be trusted to perform commendably as a sub when they were having a bad game, without ever threatening their starting places

entrylev leviev (nakhchivan), Monday, 18 October 2010 18:22 (fifteen years ago)

totally biased for le tissier cuz he was my favourite pl player when i was very little, but honestly his record stands up well

25/38 in 93/94 season playing from midfield for southampton.....pretty extraordinary, and he had seven seasons of 10+ league goals

admittedly that was in a substandard league, but you could compare it favourably to someone like diego in germany today

players from these isles with that level of technical quality are rare and deserve immense respect for thriving in a culture that's largely antithetical to them

entrylev leviev (nakhchivan), Monday, 18 October 2010 18:34 (fifteen years ago)

the barcelona forwards were also very enthusiastic about larsson, because he could be trusted to perform commendably as a sub when they were having a bad game, without ever threatening their starting places

Couldn't it (gasp!) possibly be that they respected and admired him as a player? Where are you getting everything after "because" in that sentence?

underrated football teams I have owned (onimo), Monday, 18 October 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i'm being very cynical admittedly

but it's a bit like solskjaer at man utd, praised incessantly but if he was rly that good he wouldn't have been a sub most of the time

entrylev leviev (nakhchivan), Monday, 18 October 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

“He’s not merely a player. He’s a legend, a hero, and my idol.”

The words were Ronaldinho’s, and the subject of his lavish praise was not Garrincha, Pele or Zico, but a Swede by the name of Henrik Larsson. His was far from an isolated tribute.

this just seems a bit hyperbolic!

entrylev leviev (nakhchivan), Monday, 18 October 2010 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

good article about larsson, in any case

entrylev leviev (nakhchivan), Monday, 18 October 2010 18:58 (fifteen years ago)

It's not Ronaldinho dismissing Garrincha there.

underrated football teams I have owned (onimo), Monday, 18 October 2010 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

just comes off as a bit overdone, is all

must have amazed ronaldinho to see a player w/ his work ethic, dedication and loyalty tho

entrylev leviev (nakhchivan), Monday, 18 October 2010 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah apparently when he arrived at Barca the forwards were all asking him wtf he was doing running back and tackling in training - Ronaldinho told him it was someone else's job to go and get them the ball.

underrated football teams I have owned (onimo), Monday, 18 October 2010 19:06 (fifteen years ago)

lol

that does sound a lot like barca circa 2005....

entrylev leviev (nakhchivan), Monday, 18 October 2010 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

Larsson was 34 when they won the champions league and had missed most of the previous season with a bad knee injury - it's maybe not surprising that he was mostly a sub by 2006.

That Henry quote is quite epically sour. I imagine him going on to say he didn't want to win the stupid champions league anyway.

solskjaer was every bit that good, but yorke and cole worked brilliantly together for most of his key time at utd, and RvN didn't play with anyone beside him.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 09:02 (fifteen years ago)

Savages. All of you.

Not really, putting Le Tiss in is perfectly ok, but the format of the HoF means the best player* to have played in my country in my 30+ years of watching football is now excluded, and that sucks.

*though I'll hear arguments for Brian Laudrup, Ally McCoist, Lubo Moravcik and pre-injury Michael Mols - none of whom would imo have beaten Le Tissier - which to me says Scottish football has no part to play here.

Hoddle of all people not picking him for England. Always preferred him to Gascoigne.

Ah Henrik'll be eligible again in January xp, plenty of time to get those voting fingers into training.

Overall I think this worked pretty well, no? Any suggested tweaks to the format for next month? Maybe make the poll a bit shorter. My feeling is that five candidates was probably about right, and three-month quarantine for losers will be long enough.
