Thread for continued speculation on l'affaire KEYSY etc, rolling reactionary stupidity/misogyny/prejudice in football

these cunts seem like typical news corp exec/'talent' level employees, riding the wilmslowwave of upscale mock tudor banality, peroxide wifelets, extramarital toilet beejes, boutique divorce lawyers on retainer and drinksodden four figure blowouts at ainstree, all the while cackling in the knowledge that they are truly avatars of the age, gazing down from on high over the routinized sadism and relentless coarseness of coalition era anglobourgie

they are the conduit between the aging post-gazza gentrified blokecult hoardes and the priapic young gods of the epl who can and will fuck anything that moves, the pornographic fantasies of the former mutating into grim menopausal fuckwant via continued proximity to the latter

truly they are evil incarnate, but what is to be done?

keys should be sacked, somehow feel he went way further than gray on this one?

Achillean Heel (darraghmac), Monday, 24 January 2011 22:03 (fourteen years ago)

they might think this is an apt opportunity for rebranding anyway? idk how attached sky and their viewers are to keysy

andy gray does seem pretty intregal to their shit tho, cant see them letting go of him

taiga mutha (nakhchivan), Monday, 24 January 2011 22:05 (fourteen years ago)

gray def their star man, even tho he's pretty bad at what he does

Achillean Heel (darraghmac), Monday, 24 January 2011 22:07 (fourteen years ago)

sort of fitting that sky's franchise playa isn't really all that [via terry, carragher, rooney etc]

taiga mutha (nakhchivan), Monday, 24 January 2011 22:09 (fourteen years ago)

Keep watching after the inital Keys/Gray conversation for Gray's thoughts before the match.

The referee was perfect (Chris), Monday, 24 January 2011 22:19 (fourteen years ago)

they both need to be ditched, in terms of improving the coverage. both way too self satisfied, gray in particular. but if it's about this incident keys is way worse. that "do us a favour love" is prehistoric shit, as is the idea that women are somehow hardwired not to understand the offside law.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Monday, 24 January 2011 22:20 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, as has been noted the worst of this is the tone. I will happily admit to saying all kinds of indefensible shit in the pub or whatever, when bantering or joking, and let he who is without sin etc. But Keys sounds sub-Littlejohn on the tape, a 1950s throwback with not a trace of humour in what he's saying. He comes across as somebody who for real despises women. Gray is really only nodding and mumbling agreement I think which ain't great but hey we've all got into those conversations with shocking wankers where it's easier to not intervene.

Achillean Heel (darraghmac), Monday, 24 January 2011 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

Achillean Heel (darraghmac), Monday, 24 January 2011 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

nah I just played that video clip which had a lot cleaner version of the tape plus that on camera stuff. I mean Gray still seems less spiteful than Keys but I dunno maybe he's never had a messy divorce or something

Cars and Freedom (Noodle Vague), Monday, 24 January 2011 22:42 (fourteen years ago)

damn i've heard the tape again and if u amp up the mid frequencies and block out the whirring background drone of partridgesque self-regard, you can hear them pretty clearly DENYING THE HOLOCAUST

nakhchivan, Monday, 24 January 2011 22:43 (fourteen years ago)

have we got Littlejohn's definite "thoughts" on the issue yet btw?

Nobody would miss him if he went tomorrow. When have you ever, in 19 years of Premiership coverage, ever heard someone said that they liked Richard Keys, or that he was really good at his job? Until recently I don't even remember anyone saying anything particularly bad about him either.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 00:00 (fourteen years ago)

have u ever been to norwich tho

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 00:07 (fourteen years ago)

Don't give these two a red card

Why on earth should Sky presenters Andy Gray and Richard Keys be pilloried for something they said off-air?

I would imagine their considered view that women have no business running the line at Premier League football matches would be considered utterly uncontroversial by most gentlemen of a certain age.

Come to mention it, most women of a certain age would probably agree, too.

By all accounts, the lady linesman involved is a jolly good sport and wasn’t in the slightest bit offended. All the chaps said was that she didn’t understand the offside rule. I’m not sure I understand the offside rule these days, either. And I’ve been around football all my life.

Yet we’ve had a procession of po-faced feminists feigning outrage at this alleged ‘slight’. Keys and Gray have been accused of ‘appalling and damaging sexism’. For goodness sake. I’ve heard much worse said about male linesmen, not to mention referees and their parentage being called into question.

This was a private conversation between two mates that should never have gone any further. In an age when the Prime Minister’s spokesman is hounded from office for allegedly colluding in the hacking of phone messages in his previous incarnation as a newspaper editor, why should the private thoughts of two football presenters be considered less sacrosanct than those of any other public figure?

I know the old adage that you should never say anything unguarded in front of a live microphone. But we’ve all done it.

Whatever you think of what was said, there’s more than a sneaking suspicion here that Andy Gray, at least, has been set up by someone at Sky to take a fall.

Hopefully Littlejohn is next. Is he still allowed on TV?

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 06:08 (fourteen years ago)

All the chaps said was that she didn’t understand the offside rule. I’m not sure I understand the offside rule these days, either. And I’ve been around football all my life.

Yeah, and it's not your paid job on a football pitch to, mate. And no-one's suggested that you can't do it because of your gender, same as no-one who throws abuse at rubbish linesman (and god knows I do it every week), to the best of my knowledge, is suggesting they can't do their jobs because they are men. The amount of wilful point-missing all over the place wrt this is amazing.

I take it that article is by Littlejohn then, aye?

ailsa, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 08:48 (fourteen years ago)

Biggest point-missing was a piece in The Times yesterday arguing that the lino didn't deserve this because she'd've'd to work twice as hard as any male lino to get where she was so should be cut a bit of slack. Fair enough - but the journo didn't even point out that she got the call right! The impression was all 'be nice to the lady, she's doing her best', which is very much not the way to counter the furore here.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 09:07 (fourteen years ago)

xp That was by Littlejohn, yes.

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 09:34 (fourteen years ago)

btw, I'm absolutely fine with "lol women don't be understanding offside" as a meme and a joke. Anyone who's spent any time in a car with me will know I'm the world's worst at making cracks about women drivers, so it would be hypocritical of me to not laugh at anyone trotting out the old football cliche in the world. But Keys and Gray didn't sound like they were joking, and the totally undisguised disgust in Keys' voice when discussing Karren Brady was just vile unreconstructed misogyny.

I suspect Helen Chamberlain will be the patsy for the "go on, explain the offside rule then, GIRL" on Sky Sports on Saturday morning to make it all OK again.

ailsa, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 09:38 (fourteen years ago)

It's been a pretty bad few days for his old mates in the Murdoch empire but, wow, Littlejohn is shook.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 10:02 (fourteen years ago)

I notice "lol, we've all done it, what can you do, eh?" wasn't to the forefront of what passes for Littlejohn's mind when Gordon Brown's private thoughts were accidentally broadcast to the world.

Feel so sorry for the lino having her drunken facebook pictures plastered all over the papers, as if that has anything to do with anything. Pretty much anyone in the modern world could be treated like shit just by having one drunk night where their friend had a camera.

supply 'n d-man (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 11:08 (fourteen years ago)

David Lister drags up a completely unrelated incident to bash footballers as not only sexist but anti-semitic too. “Hearing both footballers and football commentators off-screen can be a shock to the system… [Matt Le Tissier] caused collective jaw-dropping [once saying] ‘I always enjoyed playing at White Hart Lane,’ mentioning the ground of Tottenham Hotspur, whose Jewish fans make up a large proportion of its support. ‘It was the only place where I felt I didn’t have a big nose.’ He was followed by Richard Keys, who gave one of the most witless and sexist speeches I have heard… Keys remarked that he had once glimpsed Cherie at a function. He grimaced, made noises of disgust and wondered aloud how on earth Blair could be attracted to her.”

supply 'n d-man (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 11:11 (fourteen years ago)

The front of the Sun has one of her facebook snaps with the headline "get 'em off" (referring, obviously, to the much smaller pictures of Keys and Gray). Ugh.

ailsa, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 11:23 (fourteen years ago)

And yes, being outraged at the Sun being offensive is like being outraged at the actual sun daring to rise in the morning, I know.

ailsa, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 11:24 (fourteen years ago)

see, what Le Tiss has done there is made a joke, and not a bad one. Keys on the other hand, that doesn't seem to be a joke at all, though he probably thinks it is. It's actually the problem with mainstream telly coverage in a nutshell, albeit usually they stick to cynicism rather than tipping into abuse.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 11:31 (fourteen years ago)

this is gonna be 2011's bottle opener thread, I know it

a couple of my jewish friends have made 'big nose' jokes about themselves but to do it indiscriminately runs too great a risk of a) offence and b) falling into the ken of genuine antisemitism, so on balance, one shouldn't praise such behaviour on ILX, even if one is attempting to see it in context

not saying he or le tissier are raging jew haters but there simply is no equanmity affordable here, it's just not fucking done nahmean?

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 12:04 (fourteen years ago)

I'm really trying to be all about the equanimity atm - there are some things though where zero tolerance is probably for the best, including racial discrimination. The only context where it's acceptable, as I said, is the one where rhetorical guns are turned on oneself, so yeah, nakh otm, but don't hate on IK - hate on the fact such dull and unfunny stereotypes continue to be bandied, and such prejudices continue to be upheld - the eventual aim is to kill prejudice by loving the people, is it not?

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 12:08 (fourteen years ago)

that's fair enough lj, and yeah i usually advise more equanimity and less stridency, so this thread is something of a reversal of types

you aren't pious but you do eat lunch very early

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 12:10 (fourteen years ago)

I dunno, I dislike a lot of people. Not because of their different races, religions, gender or sexuality (maybe class if i'm honest). "loving" is a stupid idea. Just understand that people are born differently but that in reality it isn't that important on how they act or work or think and then if you understand that, you will hopefully know that there is no need to be a dick.*

Betfair, the online betting exchange endorsed by Gray, said today it condemned the former player's behaviour but would not be dropping him from its advertising for now. Gray has been a very visible presence in its latest advertising campaigns. "Betfair doesn't tolerate sexism, and we expect others who represent our brand to share similar values," said a spokesman. "We've expressed our disappointment to Andy Gray's representatives about the comments that have been reported in the media over the last 48 hours. At present we have no plans to change the way we work with Andy."
Brilliant.

supply 'n d-man (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

Sky Sports today terminated its contract with Andy Gray.

The decision, which is effective immediately, was made in response to new evidence of unacceptable and offensive behaviour.

The new evidence, relating to an off-air incident that took place in December 2010, came to light after Andy Gray had already been subjected to disciplinary action for his comments of 22nd January 2011.

Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports, said: "Andy Gray's contract has been terminated for unacceptable behaviour.

"After issuing a warning yesterday, we have no hesitation in taking this action after becoming aware of new information today."

may be this?

"The lewd scenes, involving fellow shamed colleague Richard Keys, show the pundit asking Sky Sports News presenter Charlotte Jackson to tuck a microphone pack down his trousers. Gray suggestively asks Jackson: ‘Charlotte, can you tuck this [microphone pack] down here for me love… Tuck this down here.’"

The debate about the C-word has been extensive on ILX and my personal take on it is that the word as used in the UK has become divorced from misogynist invective in the same way that cock or dick as terms of abuse don't really connect to the image of the male member. Obviously in a private discourse with somebody who was offended by the use of the word I would avoid using it, but an internet message board is a different level of discourse in which the potential for offence is so limitless that a blanket avoidance of potentially offensive language is not possible.

In these cases we have agreed that only blatant hate speech is to be forbidden, which is why this board would not welcome, say, Jack Straw, to name one famous racist cunt.

Gray and Keys’s crime was not to be sexist, but to be sexist towards women. Worse still, they foolishly chose to target not the entire gender but a blameless individual with a name, a heart, a face and a soul. Not to mention rather lovely legs.

he's mortified about what's been made about it and that he was caught. the repeated 'im very sorry, not for myself, but for others' is absolutely head achign in its insincerity.

henri grenouille (Frogman Henry), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 14:39 (fourteen years ago)

i feel like he kind of turned it around by the end, the stuff about behavior that needs reconstructing and stuff like that. i don't feel like he's insincere because i kind of believe he wants to resign in protest at andy grey being sacked, & is too conceited want to keep his job at all cost

zvookster, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 14:42 (fourteen years ago)

Keys granting his interview to the official radio voice of white van man is a clever move on his part, he knows he's talking to an audiencce of people who basically agree with him.

Did they really run an erectile dysfunction ad straight after the interview?

Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 14:48 (fourteen years ago)

is it plausible that it took a media firestorm for keys to consider the ramifications of this shit? it hardly seems it.

"that's for others to decide" abt stuff that he obv agreed with, and brady not taking his calls, and "you hear more complaints than support when something like this happens" and his "she got the call right, thank god" and charlotte "SHE CAN HANDLE HERSELF" and oh so many things, absolutely infuriating

OTM (except I wouldn't feel sympathy). He comes across as someone who actually *hates* women. And in the 'smash it' clip, he just comes across as desperately trying to ingratiate himself with Redknapp etc.

i feel disappointed he's been allowed to try and apologise for this. nothing he says alters the hateful tone. like if there was an element of wit in what he said you could call it banter, even if it was offensive. but that "do us a favour love" and worse, his "HEH HEH HEH HEH HEH HEH HEH HEH HEH HEH HEH" in all these emerging clips just damns the guy. what a rodent.

zvookster, Thursday, 27 January 2011 07:52 (fourteen years ago)

I've held my hands up. I was wrong. The big man's held his hands up. He was wrong. We've both held our hands up. We were both wrong. At times we've resembled Adams and Bould circa 1991! One mistake. 20 years. One mistake. Well, just goes to show. There's no loyalty in football. Not any more.

It's not me I feel sorry for. I'm still in my prime. Plenty of networks have wanted me over the years. You'd be surprised by some of the names. Let's just says that a certain West Brom supporting breakfast show host should be thanking me for his career. Tapping up happens. Of course it does.

But what about my mate. Andy Gray. He's given his life to this place. 20 years and hardly missed a game. Not like some of your modern pros who have to feel 'just right' before they pull out the microphone. Shameful. The way he's been treated. Shameful.

This place was nothing when we arrived. Do you think they ever dreamed about your HD's and your 3D's and your red buttons then? Do me a favour love. Look at the place now. Some people have short memories. But we remember. And the fans remember. Make no mistake about that. They're not stupid. And it's them I feel sorry for the most. The fans. No-one seems to have mentioned them in this whole business. No change there then.

"Football's changing and you've got to change with it Keysey" they tell me. Well if the change is for the better, if it's improving the game, then fine, you'll find me at the front of the queue leading the charge. But if it's not? As Andy says, "if it ain't broke don't fix it." Wise bloke Andy.

I don't feel that this is the end though. No danger. They'll be twists and turns before this all plays out. There always is. We'll see what happens a few games down the road when the new guys come in. I hear there going to give Stelling a go. Now Jeff's a good friend of mine. A good friend and a good pro. But I'm sure he won't mind me saying that he's untested at this level. This is a big step up and he knows it. This is Super Sunday. I wish him well but I'm fearful to be honest. The job's hard enough, but add in replacing a double testimonial legend, then the pressure will be enormous. Well we'll see. Will I be back? Well if 20 years have taught me anything it's that you never say never in this game. One thing's for sure though. You just can't take your eyes off it.

The duo, who earlier this year were still using state-of-the-art technology to present Premier League games on the subscription channel, are shown in the videos talking about football on park benches, filmed by what looks to be a cameraphone.

This is the first time Gray has spoken about the events which took place in January of last year. I ask him whether he thought that was the end of his life and he says: “Yes.”

What Gray is now keen to influence are the minds that he can change. He is genuinely surprised when I say he had a reputation for being arrogant.

“You stagger me. I’ve never heard that levelled at me. I just can’t believe that. I’ve always treated people the way I would like to be treated myself.”

Arrogant? YOU STAGGER ME!!!!!!!!!

Best quotes:

“I do not see myself as sexist. Not in a million years. I have four daughters and I was brought up by a wonderful mother on her own. She’s 91 and is distraught about what happened.”

As proof he explains that the rector of the church in Lower Slaughter in Gloucestershire for his third marriage last month was female. “Veronica (James) was fantastic and we had a lovely Church of England wedding. There you are.”

A woman gave birth to him. Blimey.

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 6 March 2012 15:05 (thirteen years ago)

But on Monday, Keys took to the pair's joint Twitter account – and gave the least patronising of blessings to a certain decision by a certain female assistant referee. The official in question was Massey, and it must have made her little day to discover that her correct offside verdict on Micah Richards's "goal" in the dying seconds of Manchester City's 1-0 defeat by Swansea on Sunday has been given the all-important Keys 'n' Gray stamp of approval. "For the record," tweeted Richard on behalf of the pair, "great call Sian. Delighted for her – as we were a year ago."

As they were a year ago? Forgive me for allowing daylight to intrude on magic, but Richard notoriously greeted the discovery that Sian would be running the line at Molineux with a supportive "the game's gone mad".

Ought Mackay to have rendered himself permanently unemployable through his charmless interchanges with his former head of recruitment Iain Moody, or should the game allow him a route back if he shows contrition and promises to behave better in the future?

The danger here is that many are depicting Mackay as some sort of sex offender, if not a mass murderer. His crime was being busted by a vengeful former employer for a handful of texts that were undeniably much worse than the “friendly banter” the League Managers Association foolishly suggested.

Only a couple of weeks ago Whelan was trotting out his usual spiel on a 5live report on the Rooney Rule and repeatedly in the interview he referred to "coloured players" unchallenged by the interviewer, afterwards there was a glib “which some listeners may have found offensive” type apology.

Dave Whelan has been accused of antisemitism after the Wigan Athletic owner told the Guardian he believes that “Jewish people chase money more than everybody else”.

A Chinese community leader, Jenny Wong, also said Whelan was condoning racism by saying it is “nothing” to call a Chinese person a “chink”.

The comments came on the same day that one of Wigan’s shirt sponsors, the kitchen appliances firm Premier Range, announced it was ending its agreement with the club, describing its position as “untenable”.

Whelan was explaining his appointment on Wednesday of Malky Mackay as Wigan’s manager, despite Mackay being currently under investigation by the Football Association for alleged racism and antisemitism over his email and text exchanges while in charge of Cardiff City with the club’s former head of recruitment Iain Moody.

The three texts or emails Mackay had sent, Whelan said, included one describing the Cardiff City owner, Malaysian Vincent Tan, as a “chink”. In another, Mackay referred to the Jewish football agent, Phil Smith, saying: “Nothing like a Jew that sees money slipping through his fingers.”

Whelan said he saw neither as offensive, nor did he consider offensive the other text for which he said Mackay was responsible, which referred to there being “enough dogs in Cardiff for us all to go round”, when Mackay signed the South Korean international Kim Bo-kyung.

Whelan said he does not believe the reference to Smith is offensive, first explaining that he believed Mackay was only reflecting that Jewish people “love money” like everybody does: “The Jews don’t like losing money. Nobody likes losing money,” Whelan told the Guardian.

Asked whether he did not think what Mackay said was offensive, because the claim that Jews “love money” has been used as a negative stereotype, Whelan said: “Do you think Jewish people chase money a little bit more than we do? I think they are very shrewd people.” Asked if he himself believed that, Whelan, the multimillionaire former owner of JJB Sports, said yes: “I think Jewish people do chase money more than everybody else. I don’t think that’s offensive at all.”

Whelan said he did not think there was “a lot wrong” with anything Mackay said, and there was no malice or disrespect in the statement about Smith. He added: “It’s telling the truth. Jewish people love money, English people love money; we all love money.”

I feel like there's either some shit-hot Wigan PR manager whose last day in the office was a week ago or there's a completely inept one punching his desk right now.

Matt DC, Thursday, 20 November 2014 18:16 (ten years ago)

“If any Englishman said he has never called a Chinaman a chink he is lying,” Whelan said. “There is nothing bad about doing that. It is like calling the British Brits, or the Irish paddies.”

His grandson, David Sharpe, was added to the club’s board on Christmas Eve and the common suspicion is that he will take over as chairman in the next year or so. Yet Sharpe is in his early 20s and it isn’t easy to understand what qualifies him for the position other than having a wealthy granddad. Sharpe was initially in charge of the family restaurant, Sharpy’s, outside Wigan’s ground before it was boarded up last year because of a lack of customers, costing Whelan £1.3m in the process. For Wigan it could be a long way back.
