started playing 5-a-side again for the first time in like a decade, thoughts turn to swagging myself out for the coming summer months

got: qpr 82 (sans guinness sponsor weirdly), 94 (compaq sponsor), dortmund 95 and ajax 94 (all home)

want: all the mid 90s nike/dortmunds, south africa 96 home, croatia 96, parma 92 (with the striped bunting sleeves!) and possibly the 94 celtic green/white/yellow swooshy 3rd

will rustle up pics in a bit

I've got last year's Wolves shirt and a Cork City shirt that I can't seem to find a pic of, it's a few years old anyhow

First kit I ever had was the original Hitachi Liverpool one from 77-ish

I've got a Nike outlet and a Mike Ashley's budget emporium round my way, which are very nice for bagging some cheap swag when I want a pick-me-up. Picked up the red England away this week for £8 to add to recentish acquisitions of outdated Arsenal and Barca shirts and my favourite Inter away with the massive St George's cross on it. Obviously the England carries a stigma which is only amplified by the 'South Africa' embroidered under the crest. Was thinking of adding a 'Terry 6' for a full punk/swastika vibe.

Want: the Inter away with the dragons and a decent Milan shirt, don't mind which. The bwin one is on offer for £8 but looks cheap as hell. I'd like a 70s Ajax one. My retro Cosmos shirt looks like it's lost for good, I'd really like that back most of all.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 25 March 2011 15:58 (thirteen years ago) link

I've also got a Boca Juniors home circa 98 with a big 10 stitched on the back. It's beautiful.

so jealous of clubs like liverpool or villa or even newcastle with argosies of great shirts

the basic qpr design itself is great but nearly all shirts have been articulated shittily

I coveted the earlier Spurs one (maybe '87?) with the diagonal pinstripes and the arrows, but when I went to get it I bought the dark-blue-with-alternate-sky-blue-and-white-diagonal-pinstripes third kit instead for some reason. It didn't have a collar either and I resented it from the moment I first wore it.

i have been good at buying shirts over the years but poor at hanging on to them. not sure how many cov shirts i've had but a good number. had a home and away shirt from the 3 years i had season ticket at goodison, including this beauty:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3196/3483238331_e593ca5b90.jpg

owned at some point as a child/teen an arsenal home (not sure why), pompey home (really not sure why), both an ugly celtic away and an ugly rangers away. also has this monstrosity:

http://www.oldfootballshirts.com/img/shirts/61/thumbs/football_shirt_17813_1_500x400x0.jpg

had a few european shirts, mostly from places i visited. had a white OFI shirt, that purple madrid above, plus this psg away and this awesome roma home but with long sleeves, wolf heads all the way down to the cuffs:

I used to buy all the replica shirts through the worst era for Celtic away shirts (lol 1990s), and I think it's scarred me for life. Possibly literally, ugh cheap shiny material. I used to have an Ireland away shirt and a Brazil shirt at one point as well. Now all I own is a slimfit ladies Scotland shirt. I have a couple of Celtic official club shop t-shirts though which I bought for Seville, which still get an outing occasionally. Considering a St Pauli retro one.

The two proper-proper (i.e. not TOFFS) shirts I have are both Saints ones - one from the most recent relegation season (i.e. the one that might as well be an Exeter shirt) and our current one (i.e. the loveliest thing in English football right now), as modelled by Jose Fuckin' Fonte:

Only really got one in the want column - Angola's from the last African Cup of Nations.

http://soccerdistrict.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/angola2010jersey.jpg

What I'd really like is the body to carry off wearing that shirt, though. But apparently that doesn't happen by itself, so.

Ismael xpost - my favourite Inter away with the massive St George's cross on it.

I used to have one of these! It was my FAVOURITE KIT. And then I stopped being able to wear clothes I owned when I was 10. ;_;

I currently only have this season's Arsenal away kit. No name on the back. When I was younger I had- Arsenal gk kit with the stars on it with Seaman 1 on the back, Arsenal away from the same year 94/95 w/ Wright 8, that Inter kit, a PSG home shirt with that cool Opel sponser w/ the lightning strike, a p sweet Italian away kit when it was all white...

Currently want- an Ajax one, from any time really; a Fiorentina Batitstuta or Baggio one; will get Fabregas 4 next season for his last at Arsenal; a Baresi 6 Milan shirt; I like the Udinese one with the lines all pushed in together; an Argentina away with Messi 10 etc. etc.

I had the same Arsenal GK kit, Sam. Currently have old shirts for Flamengo, Columbia and a LS Arsenal home kit from the 94/95 season - first year I went to a game - that a friend found for me in a charity shop in Brighton.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 10 June 2011 21:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't want any football shirts. I own three Man Utd ones, one of which is 11 years old (and was only bought because the black-collared 1994 one got boiled to death in The Great Broken Washing Machine Disaster of 2000) and the other two of which were given to me as presents by my brother who I haven't had the heart to tell I never wear football shirts unless I'm actually playing football. And I almost never play football nowadays.

However, I've been meaning to start a thread for some time about football kits, so maybe I should hijack this one with my ramblings.

Waking Suggs to make music to wake Suggs to (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 10 June 2011 21:09 (thirteen years ago) link

See, my feelings about a lot of clubs are based on their kits. First of all, I feel that there are too many teams in England with blue shirt-white shorts-blue socks or red shirt-white shorts-red socks combinations. Red-white-red seems a bit insipid compared to red-white-black (and I hate it when United wear white socks). I like to see teams with colours that break out of this pattern, so I'm glad to see Norwich coming up, happy to see Wolves stick around, and disappointed to see Blackpool go down, but couldn't give a fuck about Birmingham. There's probably no logical reason for it, but I feel much more favourably disposed towards Crystal Palace than Charlton.

caek, Friday, 10 June 2011 21:46 (thirteen years ago) link

(xp) Secondly, I hate hoops, they remind me of rugby tops (which is A Bad Thing), so I can't get into QPR. Also, I don't like stripes if half the stripes are white. So Newcastle, Wigan, Reading and Sheffield Wednesday can fuck off. Stoke, Sunderland, Southampton and Sheffield United are excused because of the red-white-black thing (unless they don't actually have any black, I might be wrongly assuming they all wear the same colours). But if the stripes are black plus a colour, that's A Good Thing. So Inter and Milan are both OK. Do any English clubs have a kit like this?

Wednesday's kit is certainly less displeasing than QPR's - I can't be sure if it's the shorts or the hoops/stripes thing, though.

i am, to a certain extent, with nbs. however my shirt nazi policies are different. any team who plays in red and white who aren't the arsenal can gtfo, as well as any team in white because spurs. blue has to be italy blue to work, it is rare anyone else pulls it off although france do well once every other kit. i like stripes tbh but loops can usually gtfo. check designs are usually awesome, although that chelsea one is carrying on a chelsea away kit disaster trend. if you put any shit on your shirt to try and change with tradition, it better be something fucking awesome because usually it looks like piss or shit stains a retarded child has used to decorate your stripe. if it is luminous, you are the fucking worst. stripes have to be chunky and full (wtf barca) unless you are udinese who can get away with looking like actual barcodes on account of not wanting to look like juve. 2 sponsers at most and if you try to hide them, hell i don't care how bad your kit is, i'll kind of respect you. i'm a sucker for the diagonal sash type kit. i'm a sucker for the one or two stripes down the side type kit, although they haven't really been seen since the nineties (except on lyon shirts.) if your shirt is green, your shirt is the worst.

WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 14 June 2011 17:20 (thirteen years ago) link

of course all those rules can be broken, but you'd have to be wearing a fucking awesome shirt to do so.

Also lightning type effects - usually well done imo (look at Juve's away kit last year iirc).

I also like when kits try to make the middle of a kit look interesting or use their badge somehow and oft combine these things - look at that recent scotland kit with the large badge fading into the background or the turkey, i think, kit where they used their badge like the sponser.

I was nosing about in a proper sports shop, where they have individual price lists for each shirt, when I noticed that some of the shirts were available in 'player's version' (or something like that, I forget the term) for £90, as opposed to 'replicas' at circa £45. This was a new distinction on me.

I had the guy talk me through the difference - he brought out two Brazil shirts and showed me that the ventilation panelling was different, the fabric was supposedly a tighter weave (I couldn't tell) and the normal nice embroidered badge was replaced by a sticky transfer to cut down chafing. Frankly, the difference seems negligible, and where you can see it the replica's better.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 21:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah I saw some of those 'player's version' shirts in the LFC shop the other day. The regular home shirt is £45. The 'Player edition' techfit shirt is £100.

I've managed to find some people to have a kickabout with on another forum. I was looking for a nice, cheap shirt, but ended up getting a Barca training t-shirt for £13 instead. It was that or a long-sleeve Sweden shirt for £15, but I don't fancy standing out in that yellow - I've not played for ages and am probably going to be a bit rusty.

The new away kit is an explosion of bright colour to celebrate the club’s effervescent style of play.

The new shirt fuses orange into yellow on the body paying homage to the city’s mixture of culture, art, style and architecture. The shirt has a classic orange crew neck ribbed collar with the famous Blaugrana detail on the back of the neck and orange sleeves.

The outer back detail on the shirt is Catalan’s Senyera flag, whilst the inner neck graphic reads, ‘Més que un club’ (More than a club). The font used on the kit is inspired by Catalan architecture.

Whilst the kits combine modern sport and youth style to give the club an iconic new look, Nike’s innovation provides our most technologically advanced kits to aid athlete comfort and performance.

I suppose, seeing as Norwich are staying in the premier league at least another season, I should get a newer shirt than the one I bought when we were in League 1, but I hate the stupid polo-shirt-style collars they have, like you could wear it to some formal event. Might have to go for a goalie shirt, but then there's the annoying long sleeves. Maybe I'll just buy a yellow t-shirt.

xpost: I hadn't considered that aspect. As a NewCo they're free to do whatever they want with the kit without any obligation to the old color scheme. Either go straight-up Jockey style with some spots and satin, or maybe green and white hoops...

CraigG, Friday, 6 July 2012 11:40 (twelve years ago) link

wait you have the only shirt in the league (prob the country) with a proper collar and you don't like it?

r|t|c, Friday, 6 July 2012 11:56 (twelve years ago) link

The newco shirt is already out btw. They've gone for all-royal-blue, with an RFC badge, rather than e.g. the historical hooped design. In fairness it's a pretty great strip, except for the sponsor's name which is tucked small under the badge for some reason.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 6 July 2012 12:51 (twelve years ago) link

Man, that's an embarrassing pic of tubby Holty, and the spare tyre isn't even the most embarrassing thing about it. I wouldn't hate the collar so much if it wasn't just a bit of fabric stitched at the neck (which I'm all to aware is pretty much the definition of a collar), but it's still the same high-neck round hole, but with a bit of fabric stitched on. Though a proper collar would probably look at little too rugger.

Is this a concerted effort to adopt purple as a club colour? There were polo shirts in a similar design kicking around a year or two back.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 12 July 2012 10:18 (twelve years ago) link

I quite like the big cuffs xps, certainly compared to that ludicrous cardigan v-neck they had - but they'd be better with an authentic shirt-sleeves-rolled-back look, like what I'm rocking at work today.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 12 July 2012 10:22 (twelve years ago) link

nah, it is just nike doing stupid shit the fans don't care for. internet reaction has been p much all negative, the same way it has been for most things they do. (most fans want a conservative red w/ white arms home kit and a yellow away kit, although will accept an alternating yellow and blue kit each season. conservative thinking here makes sense, considering only one of the 20 stupid out-the-box limited-edition different ideas nike has had in the past decade has looked good or made sense, the redcurrant last highbury kit.)

(southampton away 1981-83, the darker colour is more browny than it looks there.)

unfortunately it seems to be pre-teen sized, i'd have to have my ribcage compressed to get retro fashionable with it. but i also found

which is grown-up sized (ricken 18 on the back), so i'll be taking that with me for theoretical kickabout attire.

I promised I'd get the name of anyone who scored an fa cup winner on the back of my shirt, so I'll be getting a rambo. Although I wanna hurry up before there's some puma travesty instead...

I always wanted a juve shirt, with the italian flag crest. The new france wc shirt looks nice too. Are Italy shirts nice anymore? I really liked them a while back but then the tone of blue changed to a shitty blue and they've never been the same since.

Love Macron because they were the only one of the big companies willing to deal with Hereford when they reformed in such a lowly league.

With the Wembley appearance and all they sold FIFTEEN THOUSAND shirts of various types in the first season, they had branded videos on the front page of their website of "the road to the FA Vase final" in the week leading up to it.

They even sent a delegation to the match and sponsored a box - we were on the same train as them from Baker Street and got chatting, they were laughing about how it was prosecco and cigars all round as re-orders kept coming in. They also pointed out that they made Palace's kit and they had played in the FA Cup final the day before, and to ask ourselves why they were making the effort to come from Italy for us and not them...

Last Saturday I went to see the first home match of Clapton CFC (the supporter-owned club formed by the 'Clapton Ultras' that had been watching Clapton FC). Not because I was massively interested in them, but just because I was free, it only cost £2 to get in, and it was just five minutes away from my house. I didn't know much about them, but I knew they wore red and white stripes, so I was a bit confused when they came onto the pitch wearing a red/yellow/purple/spots/stripes/stars monstrosity of a kit. I thought it was awful. When I read the programme I found out that the fans had voted on this design for their new away kit and it was based on the flag of the anti-fascists in the Spanish civil war. Worthy, maybe, but an embarrassing design, I thought. I now see it's become an overnight sensation - despite the fact there were only about 200 people at the match, they've sold over 5,000 shirts in the this week and had to suspend orders because they can't cope with the demand (mostly coming from Spain).

In a Rugby pub last autumn- I mean a pub in Rugby, Warwickshire- some old coot turned to me and said how fugly that Man City third kit is. Getting a grunt of agreement from me, he then added "that kit, it wants taking out and shooting"

Many soccer clubs began thinking of themselves as quasi-lifestyle brands some time ago. Paris Saint-Germain aspires to becoming a purveyor of fashion. So does Juventus. But a slew of American teams playing in the minor leagues or even in amateur circuits, like Providence City, Forward Madison and the Kingston Stockade, have hurried past building a global soccer juggernaut and skipped ahead to the fashion part.

Whereas PSG and its fellow powerhouses see streetwear as an avenue to tap into new markets—namely the non-fans—and eke out a little more revenue, some savvy American clubs have made the merchandising business central to their model. It’s the jerseys that makes the soccer possible, rather than the other way around.

Font choice on the new German shirt for the Euros is quite something.

Historisch gesehen sehr fragwürdig solche Trikots zur HeimEM zu ermöglichen @DFB @adidas pic.twitter.com/KE69jAyIQ9
