Introducing the Hardline According to (jim in glasgow), Monday, 27 June 2011 21:00 (thirteen years ago)

i just think that the physical component of football is such an important part, and women just can't do what men do. even a team like barcelona made up of wee guys, they're wee guys who are pressing and making runs at full pelt for 90 minutes. so there are nice passages of play, well taken goals, lovely passes, but the whole endeavour lacks a certain oomph.

Introducing the Hardline According to (jim in glasgow), Monday, 27 June 2011 21:03 (thirteen years ago)

The stakes are still there, though, and an elegant attack is still an attack. The power isn't quite there in the shots, but someof the passing was pretty good and I like that there seems to be less simulation/diving.

I have not been watching this tournament but I did see Marta play for her club team in person a couple months ago. Scored one, assisted two in a 3-1 win, was generally excellent.

Japan scored a nice free kick yesterday too, not quite as sweet as Sinclair's but pretty good. Mexico's goal was so out of the blue, 30 yard wallop. Nicely done. Necib(?) for Japan was excellent yesterday.
Also seeing as Under 17's was mentioned upthread, Ivory Coast vs Brazil was a cracker yesterday. Finished 3-3 with a hat trick for IC by Coubailly. A couple of the finishes were audacious to say the least.

and allowed only 7 shots on goal.

it was brasil and ecuador i went to see. brasil won 2-0 though i thought ecuador should have got more out of the game. everyone screamed when the no. 11 for brasil got the ball (apparently hes going to juventus) but he was really lazy and shit tbh. some nice touches from the brazilian wingers though. did australia get thumped by uzbekistan as well?!

Michael B, Thursday, 30 June 2011 14:40 (thirteen years ago)

France vs Canada in WWC was excellent earlier. France winning 4-0. France have been the most impressive out of the teams I've seen so far. Thiney got a couple of goals, one of them a real beauty. Georges is absolutely immense at the back and Necib runs the show in a trequartista role.
First half of Germany/Nigeria a bit of a bruising affair, 0-0 so far and Germany yet to impress me.

England/Argentina in U17 World Cup is on Eurosport2 later. Might watch if only to check out LFC's own Raheem Sterling.

France vs england should be a v good q-final. Looking frwd to it. Eng were impressive against japan after 2 lacklustre performances and france have been v entertaining to watch so far. Would give france the edge although their goalie is suspended for the match iirc.
No-ones stopping USA on their showing so far however.

so sweden beat usa who experienced their first group round loss ever (!). brazil - usa in the qf and sweden plays australia. i've only watched the sweden games so far and they have all been pretty horrible, usa surprisingly poor in last night's game though. guess it's all set up for brazil - germany in the final now.

Nobody watch the France vs. England game. I shouldn't laugh but the French goal... the English goalkeeper dived with the ball already in the net, she must have seen it was in the net too, what was she doing?

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Sunday, 10 July 2011 12:26 (thirteen years ago)

It's a reaction to the ball coming back towards her off the post I think, rather than one for the cameras.

England, though - you could enter a team of bulldogs in the animal world cup and they'd somehow go out in similar fashion.

in an arrangement that mimics idiocy (Michael White), Monday, 11 July 2011 14:27 (thirteen years ago)

The England manager slating her players for cowardice is pretty shameful imo. She had to go round three times to get enough volunteers - did it not occur that she might have a bit of management to do herself here?

Ismael Klata, Monday, 11 July 2011 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

on the other hand

Different teams have different ways of deciding which players will take the spot kicks in a penalty shootout. Against France on Saturday, England coach Hope Powell simply asked her players who wanted to take them and picked the ones who raised their hands. Bad move. England failed to convert their last two penalties and exited the tournament.

The U.S. team has another way of doing it. Sundhage delegates all the decision-making on penalty-takers to Paul Rogers, the goalkeeper coach. "I trust him 100 percent," Sundhage says. Rogers started preparing the players for penalties weeks ago, having them take the deceptively tough 12-yard kicks in practice, and in the days before Sunday's game Rogers had come up with his list of the U.S.'s five penalty-takers (in order): Shannon Boxx, Lloyd, Wambach, Rapinoe and Lauren Cheney.

But Cheney had already been removed from the game on Sunday, and so the U.S. had to make an adjustment. Sundhage and Rogers got together on the sideline just before the shootout.

"You're in charge right now," Sundhage told him. "What's the protocol?" Who would replace Cheney for the all-important fifth penalty -- the "Chastain penalty," if you will?

"I talked to Krieger about taking it," Rogers told her. "She promised she'd put it away."

Ali Krieger is a defender. "Unfortunately, I'm not the best shooter," she said. "That's why I play in the back. If you see me in practice, you'd probably wonder why I was in the top five. But I can hit a PK."

dan m, Monday, 11 July 2011 15:28 (thirteen years ago)

The England manager slating her players for cowardice is pretty shameful imo.

That's disappointing! I liked her too.

in an arrangement that mimics idiocy (Michael White), Monday, 11 July 2011 15:44 (thirteen years ago)

eh I dunno. What if one of the players the gk coach thought should take a pen all of a sudden didn't fancy it? The England players said they'd practiced penalties but come the moment some of them obviously didn't want to.
xp

pandemic, Monday, 11 July 2011 15:46 (thirteen years ago)

The England manager slating her players for cowardice is pretty shameful imo.

How about withdrawing both fullbacks with 10 minutes to go, using up all your substitutes in the process? That wasn't cowardly that was stupid.

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Monday, 11 July 2011 15:50 (thirteen years ago)

I was actually rooting for them but I did chuckle at England going out on PKs. I don't blame Powell for being mad. I just don't think it's very helpful to slam her players after a loss publicly. I felt really bad for Faye Smith...

in an arrangement that mimics idiocy (Michael White), Monday, 11 July 2011 15:51 (thirteen years ago)

One of the full backs said she was injured and the other was deemed too slow to deal with French sub Thomis iirc

dan m, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 15:42 (thirteen years ago)

I caught a replay of USA-Brazil the other night after missing it live, was really surprised by the quality of the passing, very watchable. I don't understand why Marta was so consistently jeered though, the penalty retake decision wasn't her fault and she had an excellent game.

Also I got the feeling that the ESPN commentator (Ian Darke) would not have dared criticize the same refereeing decisions in a men's match as harshly as he did in this one.

Feel bad for this French side. There's some quality there.

I mean generally not just the France keeper, Solo as well. xposts

boxall, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 17:44 (thirteen years ago)

She looks nervous. The women keepers generally don't look as dominant as in the men's game. I don't know why. It makes the games or at least the attacking parts of the games a tad more interesting I think.

revenge match against sweden would be nice

dan m, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 17:54 (thirteen years ago)

yeah it's a good result and the couple of matches i watched were very enjoyable. too bad they couldn't play with their first choice keeper. also, they really need to be more efficient in front of the goal. a bit like the usa for example. they really didn't benefit from their 30 or so minutes of domination. overall a great performance. good year for french women's football, semi in the WC and Lyon winning the Champions League.

Jibe, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

Japan are really good at keeping possession.

in an arrangement that mimics idiocy (Michael White), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

Japan were awesome tonight. Completely dominated Sweden, had like 62% of possession. Their 3rd goal was genius as well. Really looking forward to the final tho a little sad France didn't make it.

pandemic, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 21:35 (thirteen years ago)

Given that since their loss to England, Japan has gone on to kick out the hosts and beat the team that beat their next opponents, I'd rate their chances pretty good in the final. Their passing and imagination more than make up for German/Swedish/USA size and athleticism. The US are pretty scrappy, though.

why is the image reversed? i saw the game and at first i didn't recognise this goal because it wasn't on the right side! also this goal is amazing... but the corner kick from which it was scored shouldn't have been given. too bad for France i guess, they showed the same deficiencies as in previous matches ie the ability to score while dominating.

Jibe, Sunday, 17 July 2011 12:16 (thirteen years ago)

japan are the best team in the tournament imo, they should win this. hate to say it though but the women's world cup is a joke. it's amazing sweden won the bronze considering they couldn't link three consecutive passes together in six games.

sonderangerbot, Sunday, 17 July 2011 13:45 (thirteen years ago)

Actually think the tournament's been excellent. Pwns the Copa America from what I've seen. Japan keep the ball really well, except against Germany where they seemed to concentrate on matching them physically and actually managed it! Think US have a big advantage as far as goalie goes and will cause problems from set plays but Japan will dictate the play, as France did, but with better finishing.

pandemic, Sunday, 17 July 2011 13:54 (thirteen years ago)

right now japan isn't dictating anything, they're just trying to stop wave after wave of american attacks. are they out of it because of the pressure or whatever
