Let's kick off with some predictions:

Man Utd to beat Newcastle 2-0 in the final, Hernandez with both goals. Then Ferguson retires, 'going out on top'.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 6 January 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Surely he'll go out after winning the Europa League with Utd. The one he's been waiting for.

Nevin at 0-0

Pat Nevin at Anfield on BBC Radio 5 live: "If you change the team about (as Liverpool have done), it can have an impact. But they play with each other in training and it will come together for them. They just can't wait to go a goal behind before it happens."

ORLY?

pandemic, Friday, 6 January 2012 21:33 (thirteen years ago) link

2140: Oldham midfielder Tom Adeyemi takes a throw-in and then turns to confront a spectator in the front few rows at Anfield. He is seriously unhappy here with something that was said to him and looks close to tears. The game is stopped for a few minutes and Steven Gerrard has a word with Adeyemi. Play is back under way now but we may hear more about that one.

none of kompany's momentum was impacting on the player, right foot came in sideways and sweeps the ball, left foot is to the side, kompany's low to the ground, gets there first

Look, there's 10 reason's that's not a red nor a foul imo, it being a two-footed slide is not in itself anything like censurable

carpy deems (darraghmac), Sunday, 8 January 2012 13:20 (thirteen years ago) link

More from Thierry Henry, who won the ESPN man of the match award by a mile because viewers were voting for him even before he came off the bench: "It's a joke I got man of the match, but I will take it. The goal was one opportunity and you don't know if you have a second opportunity so you have to make it count. I will always remember tonight. I don't know why, but something happens with me and this club, sometimes in a bad way but most of the time in history, in a good way."

An emotional Thierry Henry after scoring the winner against Leeds on his Arsenal comeback, four-and-a-half years after he left the club: "I don't know. It's kind of weird. I only came back from holiday from Mexico 15 days ago and I didn't think I was going to play for Arsenal again, let alone score a winner. The feeling when I scored was amazing, I rejoined the club as a fan. Scoring a goal as a fan is amazing and now I know how it feels."

his enthusiasm is v. refreshing in a sea of carrolls and rooneys who look like they dont give a toss.

Lol, looking forward to you swallowing this crowdpleasing shite all over again when Fabregas goes back to to Arsenal in eight years time.

I spent the last few minutes desperately hoping Mikael Forssell would equalise for Leeds in order to confuse the hell out of anyone emerging from a 10-year coma.

Oh, and they showed a montage of his career - was gutted when they missed out his comedy penalty, but it was nice of them to make space for it a minute later.

birmingham were good enough tonight, a lot more pleasant proposition under Hughton, passing well and actually threatening on occasion. we are long ball merchants with no target men, only capable of direct football but too fucking ponderous and sideways-passing to get forward with speed. i swear we have the odd player who is better than this but it's impossible to tell from the clueless porridge mccarthy sends out. the bloke has no fucking idea how he wants the team to play, as long as they run around a lot. the performance, not the result, was fucking embarrassing.

flicked over to check the score just as birmingham were momentarily reduced to 9 men. waited in anticipation for wolves to take advantage real quick!!!, only for them to fuck it up and give the ball away with ease.

Chris, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 23:29 (thirteen years ago) link

yep. tactics seem to be tap it about across the back line, wait until the opposition pressure us, panic, punt a poor ball forward to midfield player who can barely control it, midfielder hoofs it into one of the corners, opposition full back recovers it, rinse, repeat.

on an economic note, i'm musing as to whether the type of person that attends wolves-birmingham in january in the cup would even consider the price of a football ticket in the 'discretionary' column in their personal finances

(govtname)mac (darraghmac), Thursday, 19 January 2012 00:14 (thirteen years ago) link

But Wolves-Birmingham in the cup *should* be a 'big' match, shite football aside. The cup matches always used to get bigger crowds than the league ones, especially for the vast bulk of teams who weren't actually challenging for the title, and especially if it's kind of a local derby.

You're not going to stop Liverpool fans having a go at Utd and vice versa, all you can do is try to turn the temperature down a bit. Which more or less worked I thought, so Kenny's entitled to be prickly when that's the first question imo.

Is there some subtext to the Park song that I'm not getting? Why's it such a big deal?

evra kisses his badge infront of the main stand and admits to referring to suarez's sister's pussy. he also changes his mind as to what suarez actually called him, and is given the benefit of the doubt at every turn, his inconsistencies glossed over while suarez's are pounced upon. the fans' frustration with the fa and the media's handling of this was, rightly or wrongly, directed at him. didn't agree with the chants of liar, but can understand why he was booed.

I've always been suspicious of the "oh, we'll let him take the penalty cos he's having a goal drought" mentality tbh. It's not really ending your drought is it?

Number None, Thursday, 8 March 2012 11:01 (twelve years ago) link

Agreed, but doesn't that in itself prove that the drought is such a huge "thing", for him too? Wouldn't the best thing have been to just do what he's there for? He's a striker, take that penalty. Now he didn't take it because when scored it wouldn't really end his drought, or when missed he'd be even more down in the dumps. Those are thoughts he shouldn't even be having.

HO WBEAUTIFUL IS THE GENTLYFALLINGBLOOD? (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 8 March 2012 11:21 (twelve years ago) link

I linked to a Financial Times article on another thread recently which had a quote from a "friend" claiming that Torres was totally relaxed about not scoring and put it all down to the system the team was playing. It is hard to reconcile that with his general play though in that the few times i've seen him play recently he's not even trying to get into scoring positions

Number None, Thursday, 8 March 2012 11:27 (twelve years ago) link

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Sunday, 18 March 2012 12:39 (twelve years ago) link

I'd never heard of it in football before Foe (I think he died before O'Donnell), but it must have happened because sometimes people do just drop dead going about their business. Deaths were pretty frequent in association football's early days aiui, like on a weekly basis, but I don't know what of - I guess partly unfit and older guys pushing too hard, part broken legs etc not getting proper treatment.

Puerta and Miklos Feher were two other high-profile ones in that time period. John Barnes on ESPN mentioned quite a few who had had heart attacks and survived. How common is it in other sports?

iirc a York City player died on the pitch, when they were still in the league - 89 or 90 I think - as w/ yesterday's case it was a condition unrelated to anything happening in the game but I'd never heard of such a thing happening before (or again until Foe)

It had been stopped for two hours, raising fears of significant brain damage, even if Muamba survived. "In effect, he was dead in that time," said Tobin.

I was at the Spurs game last night, my flatmate is a Bolton fan and his parents couldn't make it down to London for the rescheduled game. It's the second time I've watched Scott Parker in person and I have to say he is gigantically overrated imo.

He takes the ball from defence a lot and yes, distributes it tidily, but he is exactly the kind of player that will see England playing a slow, ponderous, go-nowhere game in a major tournament. He is just so incredibly slow and dithering.

Thought both BAE and Walker were excellent, Modric too. Bolton are terrible.

his ability to link defence and attack while holding possession, his constant presence in offering a safe option for defenders on the ball under pressure, his off the ball positional sense and tackling are all vital things england have lacked for a decade.

Not too sure that a 'top lvl manager' would have achieved any more than Moyes over the last 10 years.

pandemic, Saturday, 14 April 2012 15:26 (twelve years ago) link

the keeping of his team in the top flight for a decade has nothing to do with my point, he has done a tremendous job in that regard

but there are different kinds of manager and if moyes got the top job so many think he deserves he would be incapable of getting his team over the line to win something. this everton side have choked time and time again on the precipice of tangible achievement

r|t|c, Saturday, 14 April 2012 15:47 (twelve years ago) link

Dunno how much you can attribute Distin's stupid backpass to Moyes being a bottler tbh.

He's clearly more of a safe pair of hands who probably slightly overachieves with the resources at his disposal than an inspirational superstar manager. At City/Chelsea maybe that would be enough, given the resources, idk.

Yes, partly Moyes and partly the big fuck off shiny trophy room at Anfield.

They're a relatively small club. Liverpool are a Big Club on relatively hard times. It's hard to escape that. Moyes was guilty of allowing his team to sit too deep to protect what they had - small club mentality thing. If he was at a Big Club I don't know if he would do the same thing.

The ref in the World Cup who didn't give Fat Frankfurter's goal against Germany was just as badly slammed though - the thing is, if you can't tell clearly whether the ball has crossed the line, you have to guess. Or, to put it more kindly, give a decision based on the balance of probabilities. I don't think it's an accepted rule-of-thumb that when there's any uncertainty about the ball crossing the line, it's not a goal.

Tim, Monday, 16 April 2012 10:33 (twelve years ago) link

yes there is. if you're not sure, it's not a goal.

red is hungry green is jawless (Noodle Vague), Monday, 16 April 2012 10:37 (twelve years ago) link

He gave the goal pretty quickly, I didn't even notice any consultation with the linesman. It was a mistake, not a decision made after much deliberation, I think he genuinely thought it went over the line.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Monday, 16 April 2012 10:38 (twelve years ago) link

When a goal has been scored and there is no doubt about the decision, the referee and assistant referee must make eye contact and the assistant referee must then run quickly 25-30 metres along the touch line towards the halfway line without raising his flag.

red is hungry green is jawless (Noodle Vague), Monday, 16 April 2012 10:40 (twelve years ago) link

gets philosophical as to the nature of doubt- presumably doesn't refer to the doubt of the players, managers, spectators, ref's assistant- merely that of the ref, and a ref can be sure of 100 different and wrong things at once- especially against spurs, obv.

diafiyhm (darraghmac), Monday, 16 April 2012 10:46 (twelve years ago) link

red is hungry green is jawless (Noodle Vague), Monday, 16 April 2012 11:09 (twelve years ago) link

I look back fondly on the memory of the Spurs staff and fans who, upon witnessing Pedro Mendes's long shot being given "no goal" despite being over the line, shrugged manfully and said "oh well, given the nature of the long shot meant the referee and linesman can't have been in position to be certain about whether the ball crossed the line, it seems unlucky but ultimately only fair that the goal should not have been given."

Tim, Monday, 16 April 2012 11:10 (twelve years ago) link

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Monday, 16 April 2012 11:34 (twelve years ago) link

imagine penalties, offsides, goalline calls, red cards being given correctly.

Timewasting and gamesmanship aren't exactly absent. Furores around controversial decisions don't happen and end in a microsecond. The 'slowing the game down' argument seems more like cant than anything else to me at this stage, play stops all the time in football, for numerous reasons less important than getting vital decisions right and eliminating split-second favour-thebig/home-team bias

the ref actually running off to check a monitor on the side of the pitch would be stupid, it'd need to be an extra official on the radio

unless they're in the penalty area and have already disrupted the game then tackles should not be modded on-pitch but there should be firm and proper retrospective sanction after. young was only encouraged to do it again yesterday

r|t|c, Monday, 16 April 2012 11:55 (twelve years ago) link

No-one's talking about using video to improve decisions regarding the egregiousness, or not, of fouls are they?

Whether someone gets a yellow card or sent off when they should or shouldn't might be deemed an injustice but it can't be deemed to have inarguably changed the game, can it? Retrospective punishment for that kind of thing is another matter.

Goals are what decide results, and therefore seasons, so goal-line cameras for the referee to consult at his discretion are the only thing I'm really fussed about.

Video refs- yeah to one/two challenges from managers, ok, but primarily a tool for the officials to allow them time and certainty to back up their authority. If they don't want it then it's a terrible sign of either complacency/ludditism or fear of loss of justification for making the wrong decision- and why would they want that power hmmmmmm

diafiyhm (darraghmac), Monday, 16 April 2012 11:58 (twelve years ago) link

wtf of course sendings off change games.

I'd argue yellows change games too, but let's leave that aside.

rtc of course otm. video ref has replay in five secs and relays their view by magic headphones to ref, on request, in ten. this isn't tricky stuff.

wtf of course sendings off change games.

i'm not saying they don't but you can but speculate as to how much as you can't put a number of goals (which is, iirc, how results are decided and points allocated) on them.

diafiyhm (darraghmac), Monday, 16 April 2012 12:16 (twelve years ago) link

The ref could mic to the videoref and ask "Is there any reason why I shouldn't give a yellow/red card/goal/whatever" and by the time the ref got to the incident the videoref would have told him what he saw. Don't linesmen have buttons in their flags that buzzes the ref's shirt? The videoref can have the same thing. This shit's easy.

give me back my 200 dollars (NotEnough), Monday, 16 April 2012 17:07 (twelve years ago) link

red is hungry green is jawless (Noodle Vague), Monday, 16 April 2012 19:43 (twelve years ago) link

I've got nothing against it being a resource that the officials could use if they wanted when there's already a break in play, e.g. an appeal for offside / ball not across line after a 'goal' has been scored, or when the whistle has been blown for a foul but there's some dispute about what really happened. I don't know how it could be used if there isn't a break in play, though.

Let's Talk About Socks (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 16 April 2012 19:45 (twelve years ago) link

offsides could continue as now, except when a player is breaking thru. If he scores and there's a question, video ref.

Bias as it exists now is justified by many things, first among them human error of refs in split-second scenarios from only one POV. I mean this is a silly argument imo.

this is bullshit by the way. think of that famous incident with tevez at the world cup, where they showed the thing instantly on the stadium screen, causing all of the fans there to know the ref was wrong. all you need is a dude who can press rewind and then press play again. and then be able to look at the screen and see whether it was an elbow to the face or crossed the line or whatever. its not going to take longer or disrupt the game more than a throw in.

As soon as he forgets what he's supposed to be doing that'll be a broken team. Kuyt would've been useful there I feel. Whereas Chelsea's midfield will be strolling through at will.

Still, it is written.

That's the seventh time Ashley Cole has won the FA Cup. Does anyone else come close? Maybe an Old Etonian or two might've managed a few, but otherwise wins have always been spread around widely 'til the last few years.

And Chris - what's the backstory to Liverpool fans booing the national anthem? I didn't see that bit, but the papers suggest it was extensive.

Five is the next best I think:

The record for most FA Cup wins by a player used to be five, jointly held by Charles Wollaston (Wanderers), Arthur Kinnaird (Wanderers & Old Etonians) and Jimmy Forrest (Blackburn Rovers). Arsenal & Chelsea's Ashley Cole won his sixth winners medal and thus set a new record in 2010.
