Anyway, League Cup today and then the season proper gets going on Friday with Cardiff v Huddersfield, which should be kinda cracking.

The rumour mill's already warming up, too:

Blackburn Rovers global advisor Shebby Singh says manager Steve Kean will be sacked if he loses the first 3 games of the season #bbcfootball

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 11 August 2012 13:24 (twelve years ago)

And Leeds have signed El-Hadji Diouf. We cookin'.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 11 August 2012 13:38 (twelve years ago)

Neil Warnock, 2011

“I think for many years I think he’s been the ‘gutter’ type of boy. I was going to call him a sewer rat, but that might insult the sewer rats. I think he’s the lowest of the low.
“I can’t see him being at Blackburn much longer because I can’t see Steve Kean putting up with someone like that in the dressing room when he’s creating a new image.
“I think he’ll be the first to go. Good riddens. I hope he goes abroad. I won’t miss watching him. Sign him? I wouldn’t want to talk to him.”

Neil Warnock, 2012

"He is good in the dressing room; he is not a bad egg. He is a good lad."

maybe it's a Hartlepool scarf? (onimo), Sunday, 12 August 2012 20:55 (twelve years ago)

swindon trashed brighton tonight by the looks of it (check the free kick routine for benson's opener if poss), have to go as far as fancying them for the league one title i reckon unless paolo gets poached before seasons end

them, or mk dons unfortunately (good already, now with ryan lowe) (and possibly lol db7?)

will also be watching graham "everyone just fuck off" westley's preston project with great interest

r|t|c, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 21:25 (twelve years ago)

championship, ooh i dunno maan

gotta be bolton really hasnt it

wolves... could collectively still remember how to win this league but might well be shocked by some of the more enterprising sides like blackpool and cardiff

quite fancy cardiff, bellamy and the iceman up top c'est formidable. malky mackay is great

birmingham.... hmmm, maybs just maybs. lovenkrands and ambrose scoring tonight, look competent

blackburn, championship's even playing field should only show kean up further than the prem already did despite a good team for this level obv

brighton still flaky it seems, forest could be on the outskirts, leicester nah, leeds most probably spoiling their way to the play offs but lets not talk about uncle neil eh

that went much as expected. can't see either of those teams setting the division alight as it stands. defence still rotten. new guys look potentially good, Doumbia impressed me least today i think but playing alongside Karl Henry at centre mid must be like playing in a wheelchair. we desperately need to grab whatever inflated money we can get for Jarvis and Fletcher and buy some footballers with it. straw of comfort - pretty sure Solbakken knew that was shite.

Bakary Sako looks like a beast. all we need is a back line and maybe a holding mid and by January we are gonna be thrilling

just one little Tayto (Noodle Vague), Friday, 31 August 2012 07:57 (twelve years ago)

team yesterday very different to the one in the league so far, any idea what the best xi might be yet or still too soon?

r|t|c, Friday, 31 August 2012 08:26 (twelve years ago)

mostly the new buys i think, all looking good to impressive. at the moment i'd say

Doyle Sigurdarson
Sako Doumbia Boukari Peszko
Ward Margreitter Johnson Stearman
Ikeme

but central mid is unbalanced there, Boukari is supposed to be a winger tho he looked better inside to me, and Ward, Johnson and Stearman are big question marks. need a left and right back i think, Stears or Johnson probably worth another try at CB, wd like to see Zubar given a run at CB but don't see it happening. Henry seems to be favoured for the holding mid position when he's fit but i hope this is just a hangover from the old regime, there's enough quality in Doumbia to cover him until he can be properly replaced. interesting to see if O'Hara ever gets fit and wants to play again but he looks too similar to Doumbia to put them both in there.

second 11 looks mostly shit to me but as long as we don't lose a lot of key players at once i think we're on the way to an exciting team. loving how Solbakken has paid lip service to continuity but basically admitted thru his signings that we needed a totally new team.

just one little Tayto (Noodle Vague), Friday, 31 August 2012 08:46 (twelve years ago)

feel like some kind of 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1 might be in order but not sure Doyler has it in him to be that 1 any more and don't think Solbakken rolls that way. Siggy and Nouble both look like they like to sit v. deep tho

just one little Tayto (Noodle Vague), Friday, 31 August 2012 08:53 (twelve years ago)

yeah wow seriously what happened to o'hara. forgot he was there

r|t|c, Friday, 31 August 2012 09:48 (twelve years ago)

needs a second hernia op, out for at least 8 weeks iirc, not at all sure he's interested in playing in the Champo.

Express and Star says we're chasing Glenn Whelan or Jermaine Jenas today. we'll see. wd prefer somebody a bit more stoppery tbh

Flavio Briatore is set for a dramatic return to English football as the co-owner of Birmingham City.

The former Queens Park Rangers chief, along with long-time friend Gianni Paladini, is considering a move to buy the npower Championship outfit. Birmingham owner Carson Yeung is seeking new investment and according to the Daily Mirror, Briatore, 62 is weighing up a bid.

Dyche plays golf in his spare time.[citation needed]

ask morbs if he is better off than he was 4 days ago (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 00:12 (twelve years ago)

"I'm a Birmingham boy myself," Paladini added. "I've always liked Blues and I've got a good relationship with a lot of Zulu Warriors [City's hooligan element], if they're still there I don't know, because I've been at QPR for 11 years.

r|t|c, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:32 (twelve years ago)

gianni. gianni. gianni. it was a fucking miracle you escaped from qpr alive what in gods fucking name are you doing

r|t|c, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:33 (twelve years ago)

Paladini said: "You need people with experience of business, of course, but also experience of running a football club. You have to know football.

"If we took over, I would probably ask someone like Ron Atkinson to help me. I have known Ron for years, we are good friends. He is local, and his knowledge and expertise is great. He is a personality.

"I have offices in London and business to attend to there, so I wouldn’t be at the club all the time. I would need somebody around to help. What type of role? It would be sporting director, something like that maybe."

Birmingham are understood to be unimpressed with Paladini's public courting of the club, with other rival bids expected from consortiums in the Far East and Asia.

They're a very well-organised club, and they've been bubbling under this level for years - Rhodes is clearly quite the goalscorer, but I think they can do alright without him.

Also - Shebby Singh's done that "opening his mouth" thing again.

leeds fans up their old tricks last night. this caught my eye in the guardian report:

Many chants were aimed at Jones, relating to child abuse charges of which he was emphatically cleared 12 years ago.

"All the Leeds fans will be tarred with the same brush, and they should be, because from what I could hear it wasn't just one person chanting the vile things, it was quite a lot of them," said Jones. "You talk about racism in the game – what about the chanting?

"That is a form of racism – I've had it for 12 years, so I'll put up with it, but the club needs to clean its house out.

DYCHE

William Bloody Swygart, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 17:16 (twelve years ago)

three weeks pass...

So you go to games, and mostly you don't enjoy them, right? I mean, you enjoy the social aspect, you enjoy meeting up with the others you know, you like to have a bit of a sing-song, every now and then your team scores a goal, you enjoy having a jump up and down; you even see them win sometimes and that's nice; but you rarely really enjoy the actual play for any extended period of a game, right? It's usually a mix of frustration and excitement and fear and disappointment, but A Good Game is really rare.

Last night I drove to a rainy Gillingham, was a quarter of an hour late due to a traffic jam on the A2, stood on an uncovered, temporary stand in the cold and wet and watched a game which was just hugely entertaining: not especially high-quality, very affected by the weather, awesome and ridiculous in equal part, totally thrill-a-minute. I say thrill-a-minute, I don't mean a heartstopping moment of quality every minute, I mean a great pass or a ridiculous air-kick or a cover-your-eyes defensive howler or a good chance or a crunching tackle a minute. It's not impossible that my view of the game was changed by veteran goal machine Jamie Cureton heading the winning (3-2) goal in the 87th, a minute or two after missing a penalty.

It doesn't happen very often but today football feels like a love rather than a habit.

he had a terrible season at Cologne last year, but was v. successful in Denmark which is probly a similar standard to our Championship. personally i'm all for giving the guy time to turn the club's ethos around - i'd rather go down again than do well playing McCarthyite shitkicking antifootball - but then i'm not paying to go see them play badly and lose every week. my old man, who grew up in the Cullis era, doesn't see much problem with shitkicking as long as you do it well. fair enough, chacun a son gout and all that.

Moxey and Morgan installed Solbakken far too late and i don't know exactly how tight they've been on the purse springs, there appears to be a shitload of transfer money and parachute payments lying in somebody's bank account. it is, of course, always easiest to blame it on the manager while you rob the club blind.

Hull manager Steve Bruce called Alan Lee a “cheat” after the Huddersfield striker was involved in a violent incident with Bruce’s son Alex. Bruce junior was shown a red card by Howard Webb for pushing Lee shortly after the end of Hull’s 2-0 Championship win, but Bruce senior claimed Lee had provoked his son by elbowing him first.

Steve Bruce said: “We will appeal. It was cowardly by Alan Lee, I thought more of him, I have had a pint of Guinness with him, I have played his guitar and I thought more of him. Cheat is the right word for him, I don’t use that lightly but that’s the right word for him. He’s 15-and-a-half stone and he went down like that.”

our ilf hero is bradley pritchard, signed from non-league football at 24, has a degree and all, also been our best performer this season other than the inevitable solly

completely singular style he has too, which is to have the highest workrate in british football (covered 9k at wolves, the most anyone's done in the top 3 leagues since 2009) and to sprint - *sprint* - after absolutely everything, both attacking and defensive

add this to being small, likeable and not unskillful and you have the very model of a cult hero

not going to say anything about today's game except that I only spent £30 on tickets which is a relief

imago, Saturday, 5 January 2013 22:30 (twelve years ago)

god's own wikipeda says he is 6'1 and mentions nothing about a degree although it does say he was a 'performance analyst' which sounds like the sort of title corporate gym employees with sports science degrees might be called

things that are jokes pretty much (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Saturday, 5 January 2013 22:36 (twelve years ago)

maybe 'slight' would have been more accurate - he's very slender of build which means that every time he comes off worse in a 50/50 the idiots behind me mutter 'not physical enough for this league' or suchlike

our results with/without pritchard starting this season would make interesting viewing for these people

he's definitely not 6'1 though, that's straight-up incorrect

and yeah he has something of the gym employee about him - he was signed because he was training at the valley during the off-season while on work experience - but he's not got yer reptile sportsciencebro vibe about him at all - he's humble and appears to value his fitness as a means to its own end rather than a territorial mating-display function

imago, Saturday, 5 January 2013 22:41 (twelve years ago)

i think you should amend his wiki page based upon who you would like bradley pritchard to be, so its essential truth compensates for any merely prosaic truth-deficiencies

Any advice you’d give to Loughborough footballers still looking for a route in the professional game?

All I would say keep it simple. Focus on what you can do and nothing else. I’ve seen players change because they hear they have had interest from other clubs, or that scouts are at their games. I had that two seasons before while I was at Tamworth FC. I didn’t react well, subsequently my performances were way below my standard I hoped for. With all that, unfortunately luck and timing still have a huge part to play in becoming a professional footballer.

Another thing that helped me was that I worked on many of the weaknesses that I knew others felt I had. For example countless managers thought I was too small and lightweight. So I spent a long time on my jumping and ways to protect the ball. These slight improvements just helped my all round game, and although I doubt I’m no bigger than I was when I was 16 years old, I have more confidence to compete.

I can fully imagine Chris Powell as the lead character in a football version of Borgen.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 5 January 2013 23:24 (twelve years ago)

Saunders might not be a bad choice - writing off what happened at Doncaster last season (which I don't think anyone could really have dealt with), he's got Rovers pushing to come straight back up, and he did a very solid job at Wrexham too. Putting aside the whole Sean-o Finally Gets His Shot At The Big Time dream, Wolves could probably do a lot worse.

So this week started with us finding out that Chester were expelled from the league, which means that the six points we earned will be wiped out. It does leave a bitter taste in your mouth when you think that another team's problems have had such a significant impact on us.

It was slightly surreal though to hear the booing come from behind the dug-out. When I came off, I think I actually heard one of their fans heckle me: "Oi Pritchard! You're just as bad as your blog!"
To be honest, it was great timing and delivery from that man, so I have to give him credit.

***

Passions were high, and I think the match became a bit too intense because Geebo (assistant manager Darron Gee, who was referee) had had enough of players appealing for everything, especially after Jerome (Murdock) kicked the ball out with no one around him, and his arm shot up claiming the throw-in.
He threatened to send off the next player who tried to cheat. This worked in my favour because our winning goal was set up by me taking three touches (we always play two-touch).

New Ipswich Town signing Aaron McLean has criticised the state of town centre shopping as "rubbish".

The striker, 29, who signed on loan from Hull City last week, wrote on his Twitter account that "to say the shops are dead is an understatement".

David Ellesmere, Labour leader of Ipswich Borough Council, said McLean's comments were "disappointing".

McLean later apologised and said his remarks were no reflection on his commitment to the football club.

McLean signed on loan for Ipswich last week and made his debut on Saturday
Mr Ellesmere said: "I think that Aaron probably needs to see a little bit more of Ipswich, but perhaps he should be concentrating on his efforts on the pitch.

"Ipswich town centre, like town centres all over the country, is suffering because of the poor state of the economy.

"We've just introduced new car parking deals, we spent money on improved Christmas lights which increased footfall, we're looking at ways of improving the Cornhill and linking up the town centre and waterfront, so there are lots of plans in place to make the town centre better."

McLean later wrote on Twitter: "Listen anyone taken offence to me saying the shops in Ipswich are rubbish I apologise.

"I've been coming to Ipswich for 10 years and my lil sis is from here so it's banta wiv us.

"Please don't take it the wrong way. Club wise it's brilliant and I'm buzzing to be here."

The new Rovers manager sees it rather differently. "This is a Premier League club with a great history," he said.

"It is still one of only five clubs to have won the Premier League title, so it was a no brainer for me. There's a great challenge ahead with potentially massive rewards. I want to work in the Premier League and this is a club where I can achieve that ambition. I'd be amazed, take away the top six or seven, if there was another manager in the country who would have made a different decision."

Clark said: "I witnessed possibly the worst training session in terms of a professional footballer I have ever come across on Thursday. We did our preparation work for Watford and he [Zigic] was in the team. And I was disgusted when I walked off.

"I need to tell the fans before the game because obviously the social media network will go into overload because of this. I know he's quite popular. But ultimately he's a very well-paid guy and you've got to earn that. And what he dished up yesterday was, since I've left school at 16 and been a professional footballer – not technically or tactically – the worst I have ever seen.

"And this is not the first time. This has been coming. Now, whether he has been angry he hasn't been starting enough games over the previous weeks, that could be a point, it could be valid. But does that mean you just basically down tools, don't try?

Clark added: "I think the fans deserve more than that, the football club deserves more than that. I am an honest man and I need to be honest with everyone. And there will be people who disagree and say this is a crazy thing. But what am I meant to do? Am I meant to accept that, just let people do that? All the other players see that. Or am I within my rights as a manager?

"Whatever happens tomorrow, I can sleep soundly in my bed because I know I have made the right decision, in how Lee Clark goes about the football work and his business."

I've got to admit my curiosity is piqued

played better second half by the sounds of it. Seb missed a sitter, which is an axiomatic Wolves line now tbh. although i was against Saunders i've come round a bit, you certainly cdn't point the finger at him over the shower he's inherited or the lack of imagination of the owner. Deano has been pleasingly ruthless with players most of the fans know are shit, but he still has a lot of shit to offload before we can hope to have much of a squad. i hope he's kept on even if we get relegated. the next acid test will be players in and out over the summer.

we could just shade stopping up. this was always going to be a hiding to nothing and it sounds like we shd've been 2-2 at least.

I'm pretty sure I've read pandemic talking about his history with the B&H elsewhere, can't remember which thread though. The one where talk about how we wound up supporting our various clubs, maybe?

Yeah, Championship in thrilling mess shocker. Looking at the front-runners, I've got an awful feeling there's gonna be loads of ends-justifying-the-means pieces about various club owners come the start of next season - whether it's That Awful Man at Cardiff, the transformation of Watford into Udinese B, the Barmby-slaying bollixes at Hull... I can't remember if Leicester's mob are particularly evil, but they did hire Sven once, which is never the greatest thing to have on the CV. Oh god, and Forest are being resurgent.

So we're pinning our hopes on Kevin Phillips doing One Last Job at Palace (which, even in other circumstances, would be awesome), and then... erm... Gus Poyet's Carnival of Playing The Right Way, and maybe Boro suddenly learning the difference between their arse and their elbow. Or Resurgent Bolton.

Then at the bottom... Yeah, no-one's gonna mind if it's Birmingham, are they?

Can't load that pic but I assume it's the collapsed wall behind our away end? Seems oddly typical that fate would find a way to make us look bad just as Argyle and Torquay seem to be fighting for the privilege of relegation. Bah.

Tim, Sunday, 24 March 2013 10:01 (twelve years ago)

your lot going up this season? know you can't possibly say at this stage but what's your hunch

delete (imago), Sunday, 24 March 2013 11:05 (twelve years ago)

Beaten in the playoffs is my guess. Two of the promotion places look nailed-on. The pack for the third is very close. Tisdale says that one of the teams will win five or six of their remaining seven or eight games, which seems right, and he wants that to be us, which also seems right, but I don't see any particular reason why it would be us rather than (say) Burton or Rotherham. We have a centre-mid injury crisis and a worrying tendency to having very bad days.

My uninformed assessment is that League 2 is rubbish this season, though I don't know how anyone (including myself) goes about measuring stuff like that.

Tim, Sunday, 24 March 2013 11:59 (twelve years ago)

Ah ok. You may be interested to know that Matt Taylor looks at home in the Championship, and that Dan Seaborne is not a left-back. Oh and that Ben Hamer will either play for England or throw one in his net every third game depending on whom you ask

delete (imago), Sunday, 24 March 2013 15:11 (twelve years ago)

Also dunno if L2 is rubbish but I'm fairly certain that this is the best Championship there's ever been. L1 can't be far off either.

we were pretty comfortable at half time, long balls on the break mostly but good willing runners and O'Hara spraying it about a bit. start of the second half they got an iffy penalty, O'Hara got a knock and got subbed off for Henry, we've shit it.

parcheesi Wotsits (Noodle Vague), Monday, 1 April 2013 15:49 (twelve years ago)

parcheesi Wotsits (Noodle Vague), Monday, 1 April 2013 16:07 (twelve years ago)

I'm currently constructing a number of fantasy scenarios in my head. I think my favourite is the one where, inside the next 48 hours, Leicester sack Pearson and replace him with O'Neill.

And Millwall somehow pip them to the last play-off slot.

Article on harmless homophobic bantz directed at Albion fans:

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 09:50 (twelve years ago)

Just four days later at Hull City's KC Stadium, a player was said to have rubbed his hands up and down his backside several times in front of Albion fans.

A Hull FC spokesman described the incident as a “misunderstanding” adding that the player's shorts fell down following a slide tackle and he pulled them up “a little too slowly”.

This is evasive bollocks isn't it, surely your shorts would ride up if anything in a slide tackle?

And Warnock, speaking on the Sports Breakfast, said: “I personally hope Mark Hughes follows me again and destroys another team of mine.”

My phone just autocorrected Oppet to Popey. I'll go with the latter henceforth

tsarnaev paleface (imago), Saturday, 27 April 2013 11:26 (twelve years ago)

Hello, yes I am. To a quite unsettling degree. I keep thinking back to 2002, when we were in the same situation and drew with Reading. This is the only football team I actually care about and I don't think I actually enjoy football as a thing. I've been thinking about whether it's reactionary, small minded idiocy to insist on supporting one crap club and ignore yr European football and yr modern tactics etc. Is it the equivalent of proudly only listening to oasis? Anyway.

oppet, Saturday, 27 April 2013 11:58 (twelve years ago)

I'm heading the same way, with concessions to the Premiership (seven seasons tends to inculcate certain longings...) - not at all the equivalent of Oasis fanship. It's less a sporting contention, a matter of theory and technique (as watching 'top-level' football is for me) and more a communitarian affirmation, a society in microcosm, a my-village-versus-yours, which scratches a different and possibly more satisfying itch

And so...apologies, but today is all about BWP versus Arter and Francis

tsarnaev paleface (imago), Saturday, 27 April 2013 12:21 (twelve years ago)

I'm teaching someone in Hounslow today (currently Acton Town). Will wish fortune upon encountered Bees

tsarnaev paleface (imago), Saturday, 27 April 2013 12:24 (twelve years ago)

Also, just realised that you're playing Doncaster, not Bournemouth. Idiot

tsarnaev paleface (imago), Saturday, 27 April 2013 12:25 (twelve years ago)

Ha, I did wonder. That was a good explanation of the purpose of football for me. I'll try to think on it some more once today's over. BWP has been going well the last few matches. Seems like a 'decent bloke' as well, which I wasn't expecting.

oppet, Saturday, 27 April 2013 12:36 (twelve years ago)

I mean, obviously there's some aspect of sporting contention in local club support, but it's more subjective, more sublimated into the nature of support, which makes it perhaps less pure but perhaps more open to interpretation, perhaps even more exciting (or at least relatable, redolent - tactical considerations suddenly demand empathy).

BWP's a lovely guy unless you're a handbag

I'd say it's more like being in a band, as opposed to being into music xps. It's an interesting topic though, and I'd say give it its own thread if football wasn't all but dead to me nowadays.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 27 April 2013 13:24 (twelve years ago)

Today 17:10 #345 Boscombe Bee

Richard Lee said that it was planned all week that Kev would take the penalty even studying what Sullivan does at penalties. Trotta has just f***ed that up completely. Richard Lee said he was 'disgusted' at what he saw.

r|t|c, Saturday, 27 April 2013 16:33 (twelve years ago)

(lee = brentford reserve keeper, kev = o'connor captain and club legend)

r|t|c, Saturday, 27 April 2013 16:35 (twelve years ago)

And Trotta's on loan from Fulham. I just can't. It's exquisite.

A suggestion for Mr Morgan to consider.

Wolves are now at rock bottom, Mr Morgan say's he is passionate about putting Wolves in the Premiership, if he is passionate to see his team back in the Premiership, I would suggest.

The ethos of the Club, the management and team is totally rebuilt.

A quality tried and tested Premiership Manager to be appointed, yes I know we are in League 1 but think of this, a Premiership Manager like Rafa Benitez for example would have no problem building a team of players to be the best team in the league, the fans would have no gripes because of who he is and what he can do, The fans and players would know he was risking his reputation for the good of the club, what better way to motivate a team, motivate supporters, ie" bums on seats".

Mr Morgan would give him a 5 year contract to get the team back into the Premiership. This would show the fans just how passionate he is about Wolves and his commitment.

The manager would be given total control of players and their contracts.

If this was to happen, someone of the quality of Rafa Benitez would not squander Mr Morgans money, keep the club in the black and build each year, bringing in quality players as we move up to the Premiership, part of the costs of this would be covered by the renewed interest of fans returning to watch the football of a team led by a quality Premiership Manager.

The high cost of the Premiership Managers salary would in some part be covered by the resignation of Mr Moxey's as CEO. The salaries of players with limited ability and who cannot grasp a new way of playing to be sold off a.s.a.p. Renewed interest from supporters and fans would bring back revenue.

what's the emoticon for burying your head in your hands and crying?

watford play nicer football plus they'll probably just free transfer everyone over surely? it's all the same omniclub to the owners anyway

r|t|c, Saturday, 4 May 2013 12:42 (twelve years ago)

really not sure what they'll do, assumed Watford was the feeder tbh

Rowdy Rathore (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 4 May 2013 12:44 (twelve years ago)

anyway there's no logic to this, my adopted home has suffered enough

Rowdy Rathore (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 4 May 2013 12:44 (twelve years ago)

they are the feeder, but i doubt any of those players are gonna be off to play for udinese straight away next season. might as well send them off to the better shop window permanently

r|t|c, Saturday, 4 May 2013 12:46 (twelve years ago)

idk if they do right by all their clubs and keep them competitive it's a p cool structure imo

Is no one watching this? Definitely guilty of being a tourist in the lower leagues over the last month or so and I can't pretend to know what I'm talking about re: the teams and players involved. But this could be my cue to start paying a bit more attention next year. This is totally enthralling!

Penos after 3-3 in normal time, (Swindon back from 3-1 down, equaliser in 94th minute), red card in extra time etc. etc. Glorious stuff.

Come on Swindon!

Windsor Davies, Monday, 6 May 2013 18:13 (twelve years ago)

Oh don't get me started. I was watching in the pub, surrounded by people who didn't really care either way. I was pacing around. It was really all quite embarrassing really. After the last penalty an old drunk at the next table snapped out of his coma and said "your body language was a case study in sociology" and hugged me. What a moment.

Our penalty record under Rosler has been absolutely terrible, even before the Doncaster game, so I really wasn't expecting us to go through. Yeovil beat us twice this season.

At least I've finally put this behind me

oppet, Monday, 6 May 2013 21:07 (twelve years ago)

Nightmare. I took a ball down to the local pitch last weekend to try out some penalties, to see how easy it'd be to hit at half-whack into the corner. Even without any pressure and no keeper, it's really, really bloody hard. Mine were all sailing way high, extremely wide, or into the middle of the goal - I don't think I got near the corner once.

I can totally understand the roundhead technique of just wellying as hard as you can and hoping the keeper dives out of the way.

Wait, conference *north*? I must be thinking of somebody else.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 21:01 (twelve years ago)

No, due to some kind of quirk it would appear the north starts about 30 miles north of London (though only in the realms of non-league football). Vauxhall Motors are in there too (which I think is in Luton, but I could be wrong). Stortford is easily reachable from my bit of London AND they were my actual childhood local team's local rivals.

The Horse Rustler and the Rustler's Horse (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 21:06 (twelve years ago)

Vauxhall Motors are from Ellesmere Port. Think the weirdest Conf N/S quirk was when Gloucester somehow ended up in Conference North one season. Think their ground got flooded that year too.

William Bloody Swygart, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 22:16 (twelve years ago)

Koné 2013 (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 8 May 2013 07:56 (twelve years ago)

seriously tho the list of names being touted is pretty grim as you'd expect. got a feeling we'll make another left-field appointment but what we badly need is Jez Moxey to get sacked and a Chief Exec or Director of Football who knows the game installed. Morgan hasnae got a clue about appointing managers.

think i'd be okay with Coyle or Steve Davis, out of the names attracting betting money. most of the rest are *shudder*

Koné 2013 (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 8 May 2013 08:01 (twelve years ago)

Of the relatively left-field candidates, Tim Sherwood might be worth a punt.

хуто-хуторянка (ShariVari), Wednesday, 8 May 2013 08:45 (twelve years ago)

that'd be interesting. can't see us stumping up the money to lure him away from Spurs tho, especially with the salary cap. which again begs the question why we're paying that clueless slug Jez Moxey so much money.

Koné 2013 (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 8 May 2013 08:50 (twelve years ago)

spurs point blank refused sherwood permission to talk to blackburn earlier this season iirc

mark venus (assistant to mogga at boro now) is probably the out of nowhere candidate

davis is the new o'driscoll, not gonna happen

tricky appointment this, all yr "progressive" type managers (coyle, ferg jr, robinson) have had worryingly flaky spells, all the ship-steadiers are grim as fuck (jackett best out of a bad mcleish megson bunch). coyle's had enough time out to look better than the rest i guess, altho robinson's mk dons play notably good footer despite the damning underachievement

curbs? does he actually want to work

“Bakary Sako now goes for a few million to Fulham. Not bad for a loser,” said Margreitter, who also discussed his own situation and the possibility of a loan move to the Championship.

r|t|c, Friday, 17 May 2013 12:19 (eleven years ago)

“Our problem lay in the dressing room,” said Margreitter, who has played just one League game as a substitute since his £500,000 arrival from Austria Vienna last summer.

“Too many players were satisfied. They earn a great deal of money and drive big cars, and they are content with their lot. The hunger that young players bring to a team was simply not there.

“An attitude like that from a club’s leading players is fatal. You could see this in training – quality on paper is not enough.

“When the players were in the Premier League they got a spanking week after week. Some of them probably didn’t want to go back up, preferring a cushy life in the Championship.

“I have never experienced anything like it. At Austria Vienna everyone was hungry and wanted to win games.”

Margreitter claimed the club were too quick to get rid of the man who signed him, Stale Solbakken, and reverted to a more direct style.

“We had a big and well-balanced squad, and Solbakken got us to play cultured football rather than kick and rush,” he said.

“The club was probably too impatient in just giving him six months.

“Dean Saunders then enforced the traditional English virtues, and they did not work.

“The negative spiral continued dragging us down.”

r|t|c, Friday, 17 May 2013 12:20 (eleven years ago)

Sako's a cult hero at the Mol but tbh i've seen no evidence he's got the workrate or the pace for the Prem. and i say that as a fan.

Margreitter never got played and nobody's sure whose fault that is.
