Difficult to summon up any enthusiasm for that

Ok I think I got the scoop on why Cluj "couldn't" be in group D: they divide the groups in blue and red, A-D, E-H, indicating the days they will be playing (Tuesday or Wednesday). Dortmund couldn't be put in a group that had the same color as Bayern, because then they'd play on the same night and can't both be broadcasted. So Dortmund had to go to the opposite color of Bayern, which meant Cluj, upon drawing, had to make way for that.

yeah, we bemoan utd's easy group draw here but if you're a fan who has a season ticket and as part of that HAS to also buy tickets for CL games (i think that's the case) you probably wouldn't say no to a more difficult/more glamorous draw.

In any given season there's only a minimal chance of winning the whole competition, so really it's there to provide a bit of midweek glamour away from the main obsession of winning the league. Except if those midweek games consist of an understrength team being put out against perceived minnows, there's not really any glamour there. And that's assuming United actually win, unlike last year.

Am surprised that my "we'd have won that if Samaras had stayed on" argument is being roundly agreed with at work - he'd have been more use at the counterattack and would have helped Lustig a damm sight more than Forrest ever could. The Samaras tide has turned with everyone except my mate Dave and my dad, who both still think he's a waste of a jersey.

Samaras going off meant Brown was moved - he was the one helping Lustig. Samaras for Kayal would have made more sense - Kayal is better defensively than Forrest, better at retaining possession, and also can join attack.

Forrest is a bit one dimensional but he's far more direct and effective than McGeady when he's on his game. Against a team that holds the ball like Barcelona he's as good as man short.

Yeah, but Forrest was trying (and failing) and to help the right hand side at the goal. Agree Forrest should never have been near the pitch in that game, I'd have had Tony Watt on for Samaras, with Brown staying where he was - him and Ledley and Wanyama were all pretty effective at breaking play down and going forward when the chance presented itself, would have allowed Hooper to continue to drop back as he was having to do anyway and big direct guys are probably the way to go against Barca rather than letting a wee dude run at guys who practice against Messi every day of the week.

Wanyama was shite imo, any time a counter-attack opportunity presented itself he fucked it up.

Kayal and Izaguirre were as good as anyone in the team then both got injured and have struggled to return to the same kind of form. Kayal's looking good this season but can't quite force his way into a crowded midfield. Izzy still lacks sharpness and maybe confidence.

Early days for Ambrose but looks solid, is a massive threat in the air, and has a boss goal celebration.

Tony Watt is a teenager bought from Aidrie Utd for not very much who's showing as much promise as any young forward I've seen at Celtic in a long time. Good finish, a few tricks, works hard outside the box, confident (cocky, even), etc.

I love Tony Watt, might be the best big man in Scotland since Sutton left us, would certainly compare him favourably with Jelavic (when Jelavic could be arsed, and Watt always looks like he can be arsed, which is a huge plus point). He's 18. Strong, direct, great finisher, good vision. Hands off.

Maybe it's just because I wasn't there though - the results that meant more were shared with others and not planked on my arse on the couch on my tod shouting into the twitter void. The sharing was missing.

People always go overboard with big wins but for a young team that cost buttons to almost take a point in Barcelona then beat them at home is a huge result.
Sure it was full of backs to the wall riding yr luck stuff but that's the only way a team with our limits can compete - not that different from how Chelsea played them but with a fraction of the resources.
It was nothing like as nail-biting as the away tie. I still shat it in injury time, mind.

I disagree onimo, I was really impressed with how controlled Celtic were - you've seen plenty of lucky how-the-hell-did-they-pull-that-off wins by British sides in Europe over the years, and it was only in the middle of that spectrum. Like Chelsea is about right, it was not an inexplicable win.

Even so, I called my other half in to watch it after Watt scored the second and no point did we doubt that Barca would score, it was just a question whether they'd get two.

I just hope you get through the group now, it'd be a real shame not to get a crack at the knock-outs.
