2017 RED CARD - Sunderland - Lee Cattermole

We've been here before. Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole is shown a straight red card at MK Dons. Cattermole, charging forward with the ball, takes a poor touch and flatters into Adam Chiksen trying to retrieve possession.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:03 (twelve years ago)

red card from 5 years in the future. lee still up to his old antics.

I can't believe Villa won! This one victory will be our consolation prize for going down.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 21:50 (twelve years ago)

Bet Milner and Barry feel like right chumps for leaving now, look at what they're missing. Villa not going down this season, I mean we've got Charles n'zogbia ffs. QUALITY IN THE SIDE. 40 points and survival, or I'll eat my pet labradoodle.

liverpool in control, assaidi exciting, coates looking solid, sahin and henderson keeping it ticking over nicely in the middle. pacheco not involved enough, needs to come deep and show for the ball, but working hard, tracking back. both keepers gifted the other side a goal.

Chelsea away next round which means two trips to Stamford Bridge in four days followed by Arsenal at home

Number None, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 21:23 (twelve years ago)

not seen a liverpool player dribble the ball like suso did for that second goal in about 15 years.

more an indictment of recent style of play but still.

Yes. There's so much goodwill towards him, I'd like to know how to engender it. He's like the antiRoy.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 27 September 2012 08:31 (twelve years ago)

it's the style of play for me, plus the faith in the youngsters. i still amn't totally convinced, it's so early, the next few games will be a real indicator.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Thursday, 27 September 2012 08:39 (twelve years ago)

style of play, approach to the game. The results early on are as bad as Roy but I really didn't want to go where Roy was seemingly keen on going, had no faith that it would be either attractive or successful. So far the only thing I'm unhappy about is a deterioration in our defensive play.

Rodgers looked like he really needed that win last night

Number None, Thursday, 27 September 2012 11:34 (twelve years ago)

There'll be a lot of bullshit written about Rogers for a while I reckon. British football journalists are just inherently suspicious of and condescending to managers who want to play in any other way than punting it forward at the first opportunity. Spurs have won three and are unbeaten in six and we're still getting "phew, AVB will be relieved after that!" opening paragraphs.

"I'm an Arsenal fan who actually left before getting to the game," says Joe Chapman. "I was stuck on the M4 so long the game had begun by the time I reached Junction 11. Seeing the massive queue from there to the ground I decided to cut my losses - not much point spending £8 at the car park to go and see a half of a match that only cost £15 - so turned round and came home."

In two dozen posts we've gone from talking about the game, to talking about fans' responses to the game, to considering a hoy hoy's response to those fans, to reflecting on own response mentally working through that chain. And now I'm pointing that out.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 14:20 (twelve years ago)

there was a pretty large gap between the media reactions to last night's game (quinn's hyperbole etc) and its actuality

for a 12 goal game with a 4 goal comeback, it really wasn't that amazing.....a demoralized basically championship level side vs a load of kids and £60k a week squad players with nothing to lose

there were some nice goals but the overall level of play was fairly scrappy, and it didn't even seem that urgent during the last 20 minutes of normal time, with extra time played at a leisurely tempo

the most memorable aspect imo was coquelin and giroud retreiving their shirts from the crowd at 90 minutes

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 14:28 (twelve years ago)

my f365 habit reflects that i can't/won't access ilx at work. Except on this phone. It's an ever-worsening fix tho

but with socks instead of football (darraghmac), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 14:44 (twelve years ago)

yeah the game was dire and does not tick ilf boxes for a classic even if it does in the outside world. none of the goals were interesting enough that they'll be remembered in a month, bar martinez's cock up and the drama was p much suspended until the last 5 minutes of the game & of et. Maybe most importantly, most of the players played like the dogshit twitter now needs to eat, there was nothing inspirational or exciting abt the plays it was just bad defending, ogs, cock ups, tap-ins etc for the most part. funny tho.

plus i missed the lols of last sunday so

"It's like death metal lyrics, but about a vagina." (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 15:38 (twelve years ago)

i think my meta-ness has come from the state of dogma around arsenal. we won't be good enough to win anything anytime soon or bad enough to really make me/us go crazy and there is nothing on the horizon* that says that it is subject to change anytime soon. a big win could be enjoyable , a big loss heartbreaking but really the stakes aren't that high and i might as well just enjoy it and chuckle. there aren't any real hate figures about to channel it into outside the club either, considering that ebjt is nearly done and spurs are as likable as they have been in my lifetime.

*of course in 2014 wenger's contract ends and we can renegotiate and get that warrior money for a potential new manager to go crazy with but really it'll just stay the same unless ffp actually does something, fergie dies and he have another couple wilsheres lined up no-one knows about

Even against Bradford City we're being served the same uninspired drab we've been seeing for years now. There's absolutely nothing that indicates we're at least working towards some sort of vision or philosophy. We badly, badly need some fresh ideas.

Honestly think this one is more on the players than Wenger. That was almost our first team, it's a disgrace they couldn't beat a league 2 side.

krengon wrote:Honestly think this one is more on the players than Wenger. That was almost our first team, it's a disgrace they couldn't beat a league 2 side.

But the problem is the manager has completely failed to re-motivate the players to a better performance. I can stand one awful result but not sustained awful performances with no fight and no zest.

If the whole team cared about this club and invested as much as Wenger did then we'd be fine but they don't, and its his job to make them.

bingobob (Forum Member) on less than a minute ago
Been saying it for years he should have left when we had Fabregas, Nasri, RVP, Gallas etc in the squad so a new man could come in and challenge now any new manager that wil come either this season or in seasons in the future has a mountain to climb as potentially Everton are ahead of us Spurs potentially ahead of us (we will know come June).

When wil people stop seeing this as reactionary.
Keeper had a great game Wenger just say it wasn't good enough there was a lack of quality admit it fs

he doesn't. i was speaking to a guy on monday who supports west brom and he was on some bollocks like "you can't be a real fan until you've seen your team relegated, arsenal fans need a shock." etc. for me at least, that is some stupid fucking reasoning. i've had some of the biggest emotional moments of my life with arsenal, whether tony adams winning the league v. everton and cesc making vieira his bitch or seaman getting lobbed and henry leaving etc. etc. Even if I hadn't experienced lows before as a football fan, I still wouldn't want to chase or encourage them. I still support my team to do the best they can.

the people inside the club seem to think wenger now is the club. there are talented players, many fans, high class facilaties and many potential candidates ready to do a better job than him. 15 years ago he was making an old guard look out of touch and it is happening to him now by the next generation. Its a shame but it happens. It only hurts more when you pull a plaster off slowly, we should have ripped it off long ago.

otoh

this seems like a bit of a bargain

Rayo Vallecano have confirmed to Sky Sports that they have accepted a bid from Swansea City for midfield ace Michu.
A host of Premier League sides including Manchester United, Fulham, Stoke City, Liverpool, Southampton, Sunderland, Wigan and West Brom have been linked with the 26-year-old who is also interesting Sevilla.

But Swansea are now in pole position to land the goalscoring midfielder after a bid of £1.5million was accepted.

Michu scored 15 goals in La Liga last season, and has already admitted he would like the chance to play in the Premier League.

I turned on to see a replay of Ba getting booked instead of being given a penalty, within seconds Ivanovic had set up a second Swansea goal and then almost immediately Ba equalised except it was offside. Was this excellent timing or was the whole game insane?

A Yawning Chasm (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 21:59 (twelve years ago)

nah it was mostly just Chelsea knocking it about ineffectually

Number None, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 22:01 (twelve years ago)

I do try to go the odd day without being all 'old football was better', but ...

It is very wrong that it's completely inconceivable that Swansea could put together a title push next season. It's barely even possible that they could be in the running for the top four. Getting £15m for Michu and then rising back to high midtable is about as it good as it can feasibly get for them. There's a nice piece by David Conn about them taking a different path, but this is as far as it goes - the gap they're pushing against now is unbridgeable.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 23:25 (twelve years ago)

not completely inconceivable. carlos slim purchases them, rest history

AHAHAHAHA but seriously though, you're right - the crass distortion of 'my village versus yours' has robbed upstart villages of much pulling-power. on the other hand, it's an even greater achievement to outplay or outmanoeuvre a pompous, glory-demanding moneybags under the present conditions - in some particularly Zen sense, Swansea have already won a title - by reconsidering what it is that we should be venerating - the trophy or the statement made

imago, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 23:35 (twelve years ago)

course it'd be even nicer if they won the actual trophy

imago, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 23:41 (twelve years ago)

qualifying for the cl and the subsequent run (hell, even just the two milan clubs) was so, so much better than a league cup, i can't even. league cup win is maybe in my top ten moments of past five years, if it was even last five, because can i be bothered to look up or remember a league cup win no

let's bitch about our stupid, annoying co-ilxors (darraghmac), Thursday, 10 January 2013 02:08 (twelve years ago)

IK otm.

unless it's against bradford in which case they're eurosplashing monsters

It'd be a bit like when Portsmouth won the cup (the real cup) - in any other season that would have been fantastic news, but a bizarre series of results meant they were the only Prem team in the semis so it ended up feeling like an anticlimax. Except, I think I'd be happy if either team won this time - just don't let Chelsea get to the final.

qualifying for the cl and the subsequent run (hell, even just the two milan clubs) was so, so much better than a league cup, i can't even. league cup win is maybe in my top ten moments of past five years, if it was even last five, because can i be bothered to look up or remember a league cup win no

It's partly about expectations and history, though. Spurs are a big club who punched below their weight for a decade and a half. When I was at school they won multiple FA Cups (and somehow lost to Coventry), the UEFA cup (when that meant something), and put in at least a couple of decent title challenges - to me, that's the level they're 'supposed' to be at, so a League Cup win is bound to feel relatively underwhelming. Whereas it must have meant a lot more to Middlesbrough and Birmingham and presumably would to Swansea, let alone Bradford.

A Yawning Chasm (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 10 January 2013 08:05 (twelve years ago)

all true (notwithstanding my starting taking an interest in idk 94 maybe, which gives me a v different perspective) but i'm saying as a spurs fan vs other spurs moments of recent times, not in a 'i'm blasé about everything since 61 tbh' iykwim.

Just been sat on the train heading out from town towards Aston, crowded with villa fans, not a level head amongst them. We're either about to bosh bcfc 8-0 because we're villa and in the ep league and just because. Or alternatively we're about to get turned over 2-0 on our own patch and Lamborghini should be strung up from the nearest tree/lamppost. Can't anyone just be cautiously optimistic about this ffs? A degree of confidence is fine so long as you remain suitably wary

Windsor Davies, Tuesday, 22 January 2013 19:15 (twelve years ago)

I can't really conceive of a Villa aggregate win because I can't conceive of a scenario where they don't concede a goal and collapse completely at some point

Like they "just need to win 2-0" or whatever, this is not happening

Sgt. Biscuits, Tuesday, 22 January 2013 19:26 (twelve years ago)

I am fashionably blasé about the fortunes of poor old Aston Villa, in keeping with the style of the Guardian liveblogs of the time

Sgt. Biscuits, Tuesday, 22 January 2013 19:30 (twelve years ago)

I think it depends on which Bradford City turns up really. If we get the Bradford City who have now pulled the pants of Wigan, Arsenal and the Villa down over consecutive games... well, then we're in trouble. But from what I can gather theyre not actually looking any too clever in the league. Admittedly this'll be the biggest game of their season so far, but still - maybe they won't turn up like they did in the first leg?

Also not entirely inconceivable that we play like we did during the first half against West Brom and stick a couple of goals past them. For a brief 45 minutes we looked like the team that did Norwich and Liverpool back-to-back earlier this season, back when everyone got excited very quickly all of a sudden about the prospect of Villa as a bunch of fearless young bucks playing a high pressing high energy 3-5-2 with Benteke cast as some kind of Belgian golem haunting the nightmares of defenders. That narrative lasted all of 5 minutes, didn't it?

Windsor Davies, Tuesday, 22 January 2013 22:49 (twelve years ago)

It's pretty rare for a fourth tier team to knock out a succession of top flight teams and get to the final at Wembley. I can't ever remember it happening.

A Yawning Chasm (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 22 January 2013 22:52 (twelve years ago)

This is fair. Didn't really think of it like that, selfishly preoccupied with what it means for Villa, haven't considered the fairytale Bradford element to all this. Perhaps feels kinda strange on the night to talk about it like McNulty is up there ^ ^ ^ ^ because the real bravura and heroics mostly happened in the first leg. But yeah, is pretty crazy the run theyve gone on so far. Would be delighted to see either them or Swansea win it now

Windsor Davies, Tuesday, 22 January 2013 22:56 (twelve years ago)

It's the first time a fourth tier team has got to a Wembley final (excepting playoffs and minor trophies). Rochdale made the final in the sixties but it wasn't a Wembley thing at that stage. Certainly one of the most remarkable cup stories in my lifetime.

If people are only seeing the gif, it's worth pointing out that we're not talking about a cute wee 8yr ballboy or something. We're talking about a teenager deliberately being a nutsack because he thinks he can get away with it, and Hazard not realising that kicking a kid in the belly in front of the home viewers might not be a smart move.

wtf are you guys seeing here? Augustus Gloop lies on the ball, our hero boots it out from under him, then the little brat throws a Slaven Bilic

This is exactly what happened. Harsh sending off imo, although Hazard was stupid to get involved. The ballboy deserves a real booting in his ribs to see what it would really feel like.

Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez: "Eden Hazard has been in to see the ball boy and the two have apologised to each other.

"The ball boy knows he was wasting time. We are disappointed to lose the player but we cannot change things."

"They both recognise there was a mistake.

"The boy was apologising for time wasting. Hazard was frustrated and tried to get the ball. He was kicking the ball and getting the ball.

"We can analyse if for half an hour but we know that both are wrong."

Zavon was born in Jamaica and he's always listening to music on his headphones. He came through the West Ham system and he's got lots of ability. He's great on the ball and when taking defenders on in one-on-one situations. We call him Chris Rock; there's a strong resemblance to the American comedian there
