Of the transfer of Fryers, now 20, Ferguson said: "I am disappointed in Tottenham, I really am. I think it has been a blatant manipulation of the situation. They tried to buy him from us at the end of last season but we couldn't agree terms. They then took him on trial and took him to Portugal with the squad and came back and said that they couldn't afford him. And then all of a sudden he signed for Standard Liège and at that moment in time, when I heard that, I expected him to go to Tottenham in the January window."I'm disappointed in Tottenham. The Premier League should look into it and I think they should stop the registration until they examine it. There will be a trail, mobile phone [records] or something. It is obvious to me [what has happened]."

that was last season and now with neustadter (who i could see in the epl soon) he is mostly playing ahead of him and jones aiui
this presumably means moutinho isnt going to arrive, cuz they would be pretty similar players
avb wanted to use the system he employed at porto when he moved at chelsea but it didn't work -- a more fluid midfield where all three players can interchange, notionally defensive mids running beyond the lines etc
holtby like moutinho is the sort of player who could be the main attacking playmaker but unlike say vdv would be disciplined enough to cover if dembele was running forward

Guillem Balague sez:
"Barcelona will not accept any offer for Villa in January.... If he doesn't feel important anymore at the end of the season, he will consider a transfer with the Premier League as his preferred choice.... rsene Wenger rang Villa three weeks back (so it is not only Barcelona or Madrid who do that kind of thing, I must add, it happens everywhere, it is common practice) but he got the message that the player's idea is to stay put till the end of the season where a decision will be taken."

"I wanted to sign for Monaco before I went to Everton but my ex-wife likes a lot of animals. I like a dog or something but not what she likes - zebras and all that sort of stuff."If I went there I could have made a lot of money because I wouldn't have had to pay tax there. I phoned my wife and said "'hey they only have apartments there and you can't have a [picture of a] zebra in the flat, you'll have to leave them at home'."That was not her thing and she didn't want to go there, so we went to rainy Liverpool."
wtf

She tried to follow me with cars but I was driving a little too quick so they couldn't get me."
This is the best bit. Your wife thinks, rightly, that you are are having an affair and tails you in the car. Dampen her suspicions by DRIVING REALLY FAST to get away from her.

His reputation began to grow and Laudrup fulfilled his lifelong ambition when he moved to Serie A team Fiorentina. However, his time in Italy was both unhappy and unsuccessful and after Fiorentina were relegated he felt the fury of the tifosi so he was smuggled out from the stadium in the trunk of a car.
He was loaned to Milan for the 1993–94 season, which only saw him play a handful of matches throughout the season. Despite being on contract with Fiorentina until the summer 1996, Laudrup stated in December 1993 that he did not want to return to the club.[13]

In fairness to Gala, going to the best team in Turkey, who qualified for the CL knockout stage, is a slightly different prospect to Eto'o pitching up at the sixth best team in Russia. Liverpool would not have been an obviously superior alternative.

yeah i'm the same wrt eto'o/wesley, cuz sneijder is a couple of years younger, turkey is inferior to russia (anzhi being sixth best or whatever is neither here nor there cuz eto'o surely expects/ed them to be champions league qualifiers) and i don't think sneijder is getting the same ridiculous wages
in mitigation, galatasaray is more 'real', a regular champions league entrant from now on probably, and he can play at reprising the gheorghe hagi 'europe's most peripheral #10 superstar' role
i think sneijder must fancy himself as a laconic old school playmaker rather than a high intensity goalscoring late arriver type these days

the carroll transfer seemed insane even then, but wasn't quite as surprising cuz it looked like someone was going to throw £20m at him asap, and the january inflation inherent in torres' fee suggested that liverpool would return the favour
― things that are jokes pretty much (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Sunday, 20 January 2013 21:47 (twelve years ago)
gillespie was definitely a hyped player, the new best, i think (open to correction) he'd had a mini-run in the team before scholes broke in (beckham had debuted as far back as idk 92/3 but wasn't a regular til the CWOWK villa defeat)
― lemmy's rabbles (darraghmac), Sunday, 20 January 2013 21:49 (twelve years ago)
The Cole transfer was jaw-dropping because a) it just seemed to come from nowhere, and b) it didn't seem to make any sense - why on earth would Keegan sell the man who had just scored >40 goals in a season for Newcastle to a team that were obviously their rivals for winning the league? The fact is was a record amount of money wasn't quite such a big deal (the record seemed to be tumbling fairly regularly at that point). It was exactly the same as the Cantona one in that sense, except in a way the Cantona one was even more shocking precisely because it *wasn't* a record fee - why the fuck were Leeds selling him to the team they hated more than any other for such a low fee??? The Carroll/Torres thing was madness, but people had known Chelsea were after Torres for a while and there had been speculation about Carroll too, so crazy as it was, it didn't come from nowhere (or defy logic).
Re: Gillespie, Scholes, Beckham, etc. - I think various members of that 92 Youth Cup winning team had made brief bit-part sub appearances prior to the 93/94 season, but Gillespie was the first one to get a proper run in the first team. He played and scored (I think?) when we beat Newcastle at Old Trafford in the autumn - I think United overtook Newcastle to go top that day (only to overtaken by Blackburn within a couple of weeks or so) and was definitely seen as the next big thing. I think Scholes broke through a month or two later (still late 94) scoring a couple of goals at Ipswich. I don't remember Beckham until quite a bit later.

ravenelli felt like a big deal to me at the time, a lot of those transfers felt like a big power swing to the premier league, as mentioned, all these sort of glamorous players you watched on c4 or eurosport. klinsmann too was big.

Ravenelli invented the shirt over the head celebration as well, he probably didn't but it felt like he did at the time.
Bergkamp to Arsenal was the most shocking one to me, I couldn't believe he would want to play in England. Of course LFC managed to spend more on Stan Collymore that same month.
Was Vialli the same transfer window or was that later?

Just looked up the 1996-7 season and it's like another world. Utd win the league with a paltry 75 pts and they're 7 pts clear of the nearest challengers!
― pandemic, Monday, 21 January 2013 11:56 (twelve years ago)
Collymore wasn't that bad for Liverpool. Not that Bergkamp wouldn't have been a better buy, obviously.

the suddenness and overbearingness of the financial distortion of the league makes you think it was probably quite avoidable if the right decisions had been made at the right time
― non-elitist melted poo (Noodle Vague), Monday, 21 January 2013 11:57 (twelve years ago)
Yeah Vialli was 96-97 I think, although Chelsea had set their own precedent by signing Gullit the previous year. Klinsmann was a massive deal at the time as well.
The Boro transfers stick out particularly because they still got relegated at the end of it. A load of clubs spunked ridiculous cash everywhere at that time and ended up without very much to show for it.
― Matt DC, Monday, 21 January 2013 11:59 (twelve years ago)
I don't know about that - hasn't the same pattern (fewer challengers, fewer hiccups by challengers) happened pretty much everywhere bar France?

That season was unusually low even by the standards of the time, though. Nobody was really any good - United were pretty awful until around Xmas time, but everyone above them just kind of collapsed.
Did Juninho pre-date Ravanelli? I saw QPR v Middlesbrough (cos my mate was a QPR fan) in Dec 95 and I think Juninho played then. And I think he was a recent signing then. I think Ravanelli was a summer signing along with that bloke with the big hair who never did anything (Emerson?), but I can't remember which summer. Vialli was definitely at Chelsea in Oct/Nov 96 because I saw him score at Old Trafford. When did Di Matteo and LeBoeuf turn up?

― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 22 January 2013 22:18 (twelve years ago)
Wanyama scored tonight and Hooper got two so they did themselves no harm with potential suitors. I expect decent bids both before the end of the month. I expect at least one of them to leave.
A story "broke" today that Hooper had rejected a final contract offer from Celtic - except it happened months ago and was publicised at the time - looks like his agent is drumming up interest.
I think Hooper could do a job for most teams in the EPL but I can't work out who out of the BIG clubs would go for him and give him a game. Wanyama on his game looks like he'd fit right into a Man United midfield but when he's off his game he's simply far too careless in possession so idk.
I'd like some news from Celtic about other players extending contracts given that those two seem to have made their minds up.

Leroy Fer to Everton - LBI? Wasn't expecting them to weigh in heavily tbh.

Dear Toffees,
The rumours that are making the rounds on your side of the sea right now, regarding your newest signing Leroy Fer of Twente, are entirely true. Fer indeed once bought his girlfriend a horse, only to realise later that his girlfriend lives in an appartment with a drafty balcony and does not have room for a horse. So he sold the horse again.
That is all,
Sincerely,

Nah I think we need him, if Dembele gets injured we don't have a decent playmaker. Whatever AVB's been saying in public there's no way he isn't asking Levy for more money for a striker right now. We're running Defoe into the ground at the moment.

That's the main reason I couldn't see him at Spurs - unless there was a personality thing and AVB wanted rid (or wanted a cheaper replacement). I think he's less likely than Defoe to have a pop from distance and more likely than Defoe to get on the end of a tap-in but it's otherwise a fair comparison.

Not as quick as Defoe & is untested at EPL level - though he has held his own in Europe. On balance I'd say Defoe was the better player at this moment but if you factor in age and also wages vs return I'd take Hooper.

I hope he's sensational for Milan btw. A couple of goals to dump Barca out the CL'd be a decent start.

He's got to be great at some point really, doesn't he? When he gets the winning goal at the Etihad in next season's Champs League knock-out stages it will be fucking all time.
Don't know too much about Milan atm, but the prospect of Mario and El Shawaary forming a devastating partnership for club and country over the next half a decade is an appealing one

You're missing the one reason I could see him at Spurs, which is we only currently have one striker who is on the verge of physically breaking down. This was why I asked whether he was any good or likely to be a stopgap/panic buy squad player.

Definitely, I mean I don't get the sense he's going to get fat or lazy or anything like that but he definitely needs the right manager and Mancini definitely wasn't. Not sure Allegri is that guy either though.

I was discussing this with a colleague this morning and he made the very good point that Wanyama had the look of a man who was told by his agent not to get injured, hence his willingness to give Paul McGowan the freedom of Hampden.

People who think balotelli is destined to become great confuse me. If yr the type who thinks he's great now, fair enough i disagree but your criteria are just different nbd. But he's not ever going to get any better, he's peaked. Found out. Bengal lancer etc.
― b'hurt's tauntin' (darraghmac), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 11:13 (twelve years ago)
He may not become more skilful, quick or strong - but he can maybe get better at not being a dick, not getting sent off, not ignoring his team-mates, etc. which would all make him a more productive footballer.
― Stop Gerrying Me! (onimo), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 11:15 (twelve years ago)
Don't think Balotelli was even remotely "found out" in the Premiership. "Found out" is what happens to limited but briefly terrifying attacking players with a few tricks that defenders get wise to. It was pretty obvious that he didn't really care in his latter months - a more motivated, focused and level-headed Balotelli would be world class and impossible for most players to deal with. But he needs the right manager to get that out of him.

"It's a shame to talk about this but he didn't even say goodbye, he didn't explain anything to us. Whatever happens to you, you should take into account the people with whom you work," he said.

It is understood that Rangers were put off by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy’s demand that the relegation strugglers take all three players or none at all.
Two of the deals would have had to be permanent because Premier League regulations limit the numbers of loans between top-flight clubs to one per season.
QPR are only willing to return to the negotiating table if Levy is willing to grant them more room for manoeuvre.

Swedish keeper Viktor Noring at Celtic Park for talks. Fits the model: early 20s but with plenty of 1st team experience and maybe breaking into national team. Zaluska's days numbered after shipping a few in his wee stint while Forrester was injured.
― Stop Gerrying Me! (onimo), Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:35 (twelve years ago)
hoilett's done bugger all lately, injured himself for a month after 20 mins just when he got his chance vs chelsea, and since then swp's endeared himself to arry with alleged defensive work
i get the impression he's the sort that only does his best work with a clear mind and if he's not in the zone he gets all harried and ragged. really needs three or four starts in a row, will never impress as a supersub
letting faurlin go on loan is painful (especially for jenas ffs) but he's badly off form right now after being badly mismanaged by hughes on his return from injury (couple of weeks of full 90s minutes then scapegoated for being outmuscled by west ham). much as i don't like it i can see why arry doesnt have the time for him right now what with granero also in the building looking wishy washy

Mino Raiola must be the best agent there is. He manages to get clubs to sign terrible players, again and again.
He make sure Manolev is going from PSV to Fulham today (obv with some help from Jol, but still). Manolev, a right back, is a tragic story: he has been butchered by pundits here for running forward like a chicken with his head cut off, and delivering the worst of cross passes (think balls flying out of the stadium). He became a cult-figure of some sorts, a bit like Jason 'Pineapple' Lee. Raiola managed to offload him at Fulham. That transfer deserves a prize of some sorts.
I do like him and always felt sorry for Manolev. If you don't mind a defender losing the ball near the goal on the other half, and three seconds later you are a goal behind, want to laugh at his hoooofballs, Manolev is your go to guy. Embrace him, England.

The 26-year-old arrived in London to complete his move to the Emirates Stadium after Gunners officials finalised the deal with Malaga officials in the afternoon.

Transfer window failing to live up to the hype yet again
― Designated Striver (Tom D.), Saturday, 2 February 2013 12:02 (twelve years ago)
Thing is, all transfer windows in this country are forever doomed to be measured up to those two absurd final days - the Torres / Carroll madness in January, and that amazing few hours in summer 2008 when City got bought out and snaffled up Robinho from nowhere, and Fergie absconded with Berba. Both of those days kinda felt like paradigm shifts to me at the time but in actual fact they were probably just anomalies. Only need to look at how each of those deals worked out to see why really. Even Berbatov for £30 mil looks pretty steep these days but I don't think it felt so at the time.
― Windsor Davies, Saturday, 2 February 2013 13:40 (twelve years ago)
it was considered way over the odds at the time
― Number None, Saturday, 2 February 2013 13:42 (twelve years ago)
Eh, maybe it was just my perception of the market, what with some of the other mad fees getting paid that day. I was 16 and I wasn't quite so interested in foosball at the time. Too busy learning to smoke and scratching Smiths lyrics into my arm with a fountain pen iirc
― Windsor Davies, Saturday, 2 February 2013 13:46 (twelve years ago)
Nah when United signed Berbatov he was a 20+ goal a season striker three seasons running and all the rhetoric was around him being the missing piece of the jigsaw with Rooney and Ronaldo. It looks steep in hindsight because he never quite worked out for them in the way everyone expected, although he still had a ratio of almost one in two for them.
― Matt DC, Saturday, 2 February 2013 13:47 (twelve years ago)
nope, the reaction from Utd fans was extremely skeptical. And there were a lot of complaints about the price

xp though Anzhi have paid £30m to Shakhtar for Willian, I guess prices are still holding up in some places. Seems a silly move what with Shakhtar still being in the Champions League and Willian being coveted elsewhere and all

Liverpool are compiling a dossier on the fitness issues that have plagued Daniel Sturridge’s career after it emerged he has injured his left thigh nine times.
The England striker is faced with another six week lay-off after he broke down in training on Monday. It is the second time this season Sturridge has injured the muscle, but Liverpool’s medical staff are now processing his history from previous clubs in an attempt to get to the bottom of it.
Sturridge is set to meet manager Brendan Rodgers on Friday to discuss the situation and the prospect of an operation cannot be ruled out. Rodgers said: ‘It was in a session and quite an innocuous action. He did it when he just flicked the ball. It wasn’t a shot or anything that looked serious. But obviously he felt the pain and then when the medical team told me the next day after the scan, it was disappointing.
