1629: GOAL- Swansea 4-1 QPR - Michu (67 mins)
He scored two against them on the opening day, and he has got his brace again today. Michu pokes home from Pablo Hernandez's throughball. QPR respond by sending on Shaun Wright-Phillips for Jermaine Jenas.

The Anzhi director German Tkachenko, however, revealed that no one there could quite believe what QPR were willing to pay to get their man. Speaking to the Russian news site www.sports.ru, Tkachenko said: "At QPR he will earn almost as much as he did at Anzhi. In my view QPR have lost their minds.
"When they agreed to pay his release fee we wept. He [Samba] wept. Everybody says that he ran away from the club, but that's not true. He didn't put any pressure on the club until we received an offer from QPR for £12.5m, the amount required by his contract."

"You can talk about tactics and analysis all you like," Neville said on Monday Night Football. "You can potentially say, 'Okay, Clint Hill, you maybe should have gone in there'. You can maybe say, 'Samba, you should have adjusted your position.'
"They are tactical, football points - players maybe not seeing the danger early enough. (But) I cannot understand what Bosingwa and Mbia have done.
"They are things which go beyond football analysis, because, to walk away from the game, which is something Mbia has done, is unexplainable."
[...]
"But I sense that, two or three months out, this thought is going deeper into the back of this thick skull that QPR still could, and may, get out of it (relegation).
"Southampton could almost put QPR to bed on Saturday. But if QPR win and bring Southampton back into them, they could potentially go on a run."

[Redknapp] says he always knew [Southampton] had the wherewithal to recover.
"OK, they had to take a couple of steps backwards, they went down to League One, but you knew when you looked at it that they were going to come back. They've always had a good infrastructure … great stadium, fantastic training ground, great youth setup producing kids like a conveyer belt, they've always done it. They were never a club that was to disappear with no foundation."
Asked whether QPR are equally equipped to recover if they are relegated, Redknapp's reticence is telling. "It's different," he says. "I'm not going to say something that's going to cause a problem for me, I don't need that. It's different."

“There’s not a lot you can do, you can’t change the way people are,” said Redknapp.
“It is very difficult. We were unfortunate to come in 1-0 down, but we started the second half sloppily, giving free-kicks away. We got done last week against Wigan through lack of discipline.
“If you look at QPR’s record over the last two years they have probably had more players sent off than anyone else in history. That’s a lack of discipline.”
“People say they are talented players but I don’t know. Are they that talented? I don’t know really. You have some experienced players but what you need is a good group of characters, a good group of people together and you have not got any problems when you have that.”
“They won’t go. They all have contracts. Who is going to pay them what they are earning here? It is going to be very hard to shift them.
“It is not a case of players wanting to leave suddenly. I hear that all the time, that if they get relegated they want to go because they don’t want to play in the Championship.
"But if they f****** played better, then they would not be in the Championship so that’s a load of cobblers."
"I don’t know the financial situation of the club at all. Only the chairman would know. I’ve not spoken to anyone about my position, to be honest. I’ve not even thought about it."

The only thing the QPR boss wishes he had done differently is to have brought in Odemwingie, who saw a January move to Loftus Road collapse after his bizarre deadline day actions.
'I would not have changed an awful lot, really,' Redknapp said. 'I'd have probably tried harder to get the boy from West Brom, Odemwingie.
'He might have really given us something up there with Bobby Zamora not being 100 per cent fit. He might have scored four or five goals that make the difference.

Park Ji-sung and his English Premier League club Queens Park Rangers will come to Korea in July for a friendly match with Gyeongnam FC, according to the K-League Classic club.
The Gyeongnam FC president, Ahn Jong-bok, said yesterday at the club’s headquarters, Changwon Football Center in Changwon, South Gyeongsang, that the match will take place in the province on July 19.
Park’s future with QPR is uncertain, with some media speculating that he will leave the team once it is relegated to the League Championship next year. QPR is almost certain to face relegation, trailing the 17th-place Aston Villa by 10 points with only four games left.
Ahn, however, said that Park will come to play regardless of his prospects with the team. “Even if his transfer is decided [before the friendly match], he will attend the QPR’s Korean tour under the agreement,” Ahn said, adding that if an injury renders Park unfit to play, he still will make an appearance with the team.
“To Korean football fans, Park Ji-sung weighs differently. It is not important whether his club, QPR, is in the first division or the second division,” Ahn said.

There was no shortage of flak, including from Neil Warnock, the manager Hughes replaced at Loftus Road in January 2012. When Warnock stepped down as the Leeds United manager towards the end of last season, at a time when Hughes was being linked with the job at Elland Road, he said: "I personally hope Mark Hughes follows me again and destroys another team of mine."
Hughes has kept his counsel until now. "Neil, I think, sometimes engages in what he would say is banter that will get a reaction. I think that was one of those occasions where he engaged his mouth before his brain. He was probably trying to make a joke but the insinuation was still there, so I thought it was unnecessary.

Jose Mourinho would not have kept QPR up last season. The squad I inherited in November last year was poorly balanced, undisciplined and short of confidence. The directors and owners were nice people but they were naive in football terms and I think certain people they had trusted — agents and advisers — had let them down quite badly.

Rio Ferdinand has all the qualities to be 'another Michel Platini' and take up a role running the game, according to Harry Redknapp
― nakhchivan, Friday, 26 September 2014 03:35 (ten years ago)
Rio Ferdinand has ruled out joining Fifa next year after it emerged he was on a shortlist to become its British vice-president. Ferdinand was a surprise inclusion among candidates being considered by the Football Association for one of the most senior roles in the game.
But the former England and Manchester United defender, who joined Queens Park Rangers this summer, said working alongside Fifa president Sepp Blatter was not on his agenda – for now.
“Sepp’s not called me yet, so I don’t think now’s the time,” Ferdinand told the Today programme on Radio Four.
“All my eggs are in one basket with playing for QPR and trying to stay in the Premier League. Who knows in the future?”
The 35-year-old added: “I’d have the conversation, definitely.”

Traore suggested the problems run deeper after seven games gone in the season.
“I think we don’t work hard enough, if I’m honest,” he said.
“We need to use the two weeks of the international break to work on our fitness.
“Every week, I say the same things. If there’s one thing we cannot lack, it’s fitness. I don’t think we lack desire. I think in certain areas we lack some fitness and sharpness.
"We need to work on this - and on everything, really.”
“I think we need to gel as a team,” Traore added. “There’s a few players that came in. We need to bond. On and off the pitch. If it means going out for a bowling night or whatever. The captain (Ferdinand) needs to organise this, it’s always good for the team.”

But Redknapp said: "The only reason he has lost weight is because he has had tonsillitis. That’s the only way we could get any weight off of him.
“He is not fit to play a game, that’s the truth. He is the worst professional I have ever come across and I have been his only ally at QPR for the past three years. He doesn’t try and I have protected him for too long.
“Even I could suck my stomach in for a picture and look OK.”

Campbell, who built up a formidable partnership with Ferdinand at the heart of the Three Lions defence in the 1990s, still believes the former England captain has plenty to offer at the highest level.
When speaking to Sportsmail at the London Sports Writing Festival he said: ‘I have no doubt in my mind that Rio can still compete at the top.
‘I came back to Arsenal when I was 35 and played at the highest level for six months so why can't he?
‘At that time I felt I was the best defender around in the second half of that season (2009-2010) too and should have got to the World Cup, so there’s no reason why Rio can’t have a similar impact to that at QPR.

Samuel Osei Kuffour (born 3 September 1976) is a Ghanaian retired professional footballer who played as a defender.
Known for his great physical power, he is best remembered for his time with Bayern Munich, whom he represented for over a decade, winning a total of 17 major titles, and playing in nearly 250 official matches.
sure zlatan is hench enough too but every time i see that i assume sami knew, if only subconsciously, that falling over in the most ridiculous fashion would just add the perfect final touch to another ludicrous zlatan goal

imago's ott tendencies will have been noted
forever former brickie charlie austin is v much one of ur classic "knows the value of a hard days graft" top bloke big bottom realness totems but in mitigation for a club like us the last few years it is all tearfully meaningful and i make no bones about embracing the sentiment as with the derry/hill axis
the southampton goal and the first last night to some extent were sort of surprisingly technical for him, he is competent but not especially talented in any all round interplay sense (danny ings partnering couldnt buy a goal for burnley until he'd left), can't beat a man, not great back to goal, isnt physically out of the ordinary and in truth had appeared to be struggling badly these first few games (albeit stuck on his own without support). and yet he always delivers as a classic #9 striker, one of those arousing unequivocal meaty ones who when necessity demands has a knack of momentarily exceeding his limits in all kinds of risibly heroic ways
gauging his empirical quality is therefore difficult, comparison to nugent doesnt scan all that wrong on the face of it but he has so much more in terms of x factor... streetwise improv proficiency of the uncultured lower league parvenu i suppose. time has a tendency to smooth these things out in easily digestible hindsight too, kev phillips is remembered as having had nous, lambert acknowledged as a capable technician after all etc, austin is still minorly rough round the edges unpredictable and that's fun
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 11:24 (ten years ago)
would suggest yun suk young is becoming a player of perhaps greater interest, small nippy tenacious s.korean cliches but also a calm and technical attacking full back who reads the game well
also idk if i wasnt just ignorant of his true self these past few years or if as i'd sooner suspect it's down to our cultivation but leroy fer is mutating into something amusing (and completely maddening), an awkward yaya / armand traore hybrid dragbacking his way to circular oblivion
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 11:34 (ten years ago)
that goal vs chelsea suggests a level of craftiness and quickwittedness
hes also 6'2 and fairly hench which should help him get to a level above yr nugent types

a well executed chest-off to vargas aside he once again looked nothing much like a toplev threat until the goal lightbulb suddenly came on
he is basically a poacher in a misleading frame, the physique allows him not to be beasted but without being timid he's not especially minded to impose himself on defenders either
even before saturday's game there was a lingering school of thought that we might be better off leaving him out and having a more holistically functional unit but a goalscorer is a goalscorer is a goalscorer etc
heartening performance from the lads altogether, tbh slightly inept not to have got more out of it, hard not to feel confident about an early evening ko at home to city next even tho it'll prob finish 2-3 again
― r|t|c, Monday, 3 November 2014 21:07 (ten years ago)

i restate that he has a long-shot on him and a good deal more craft on the ball than he ever seems to have, but qpr's wage structure and lack of competition for places is probably as mollycoddling as any epl environment right now
the robbie fowler comparisons are doubly evident with that latest revelation. maybe what austin needs is an empire
― imago, Monday, 3 November 2014 21:12 (ten years ago)
james beattie?
― Chetniks in Šumadija kill a Partisan through heart extraction.jpg (nakhchivan), Monday, 3 November 2014 21:14 (ten years ago)
oh that's a sound comparison. beattie had subtlety, scored a memorable chip and a few long-range strikes, had a good fk, but was big
austin seems a bit more mobile than beattie, without quite attaining robbie fowler's level
― imago, Monday, 3 November 2014 21:17 (ten years ago)
lol u don't say
true enough about mollycoddling, idk tribal self-mythologising nonsense probably but i've long felt there to be an interesting frisson whenever a top bloke geezer comes under the fannying aegis of the kewpie platonic poodle kennel. and now austin is becoming a hybrid fancyman
plus look no further than former petty thug karl henry now a responsible asthmatic piano playing chessmaster with a penchant for orlebar brown swimwear
thought occurred during wolves birmingham and reminiscing about blues ledges of the mid 90s who i could never tell apart but were thoroughly of the grim piece - grainger, devlin, tait, legg... all unthinkable in a hoops shirt
like hill and derry are the types who anywhere else would do their two year bid or month's loan and become a footnote, here as ott realness darlings we clasped them to our bosom for 5 years until their ears fell off and button eyes came unsewn

“Somebody is trying to cause me a problem here, by talking to the papers,” said Redknapp. “I know what the score is: I’m not silly, I’m very streetwise.
“Someone’s trying to cause me a problem I’m sure. I wasn’t born yesterday. Someone has said something, but it’s not a problem.
“I’ve never had it before, I’ve never been at a club before where someone has said I’m going to get the sack.
“And I don’t see why, who puts it in the paper. Someone’s put it in the paper.
“If I win it’s all forgotten. I’m not silly. There’s always someone trying to put the spoke in. They should check everyone’s mobile phones and find out.
“That’s the best way, it’s easy.”

yes, it's p much plain and indisputable. the point of interest within the fan discourse is where you take position between
"The club has taken good managers and players and turned them into dross, giving them the footballing anti-Midas touch [...] The obvious conclusion from the last few years is that there is a deep-seated problem within the culture, whereby failure is tolerated"
and
"Could anyone succeed at this cursed club?"
because idc what redknapp and hughes have done before and may do in the future, i just cannot satisfy myself how things like infrastructure and club culture have directly resulted in some of the senseless drivel i've seen with my own eyes committed by 1x manager presiding over 11x men over 90x minutes, errors more basic than any hungover sunday league rabble. not saying they may have not been dealt a messy hand - but they also still had equally rich opportunity to change it, arguably more control of their fate than any qpr managers have ever had in history. it's no one else's fault that when presented with carte blanche they forgot everything they'd ever learned and let their worst excesses run amok. never forgive ever imo.

I can't really talk about QPR because I don't know much abut them (or their personel really) but I do end up having arguments with Exeter fans who insist that the manager is making obvious mistakes, when it seems to me that it's quite possible that players aren't doing what they've been asked to do. How can you tell from the stands? I know I can't, although I don't pretend to know much about football.
It strikes me as extremely unlikely that a manager will do something utterly unaccountable for no good reason; seems more likely that they're trying to do a thing and they can see it *nearly* working all the time and they think when it clicks it'll be brilliant and will be a system which will work perfectly for the personal at the club; because it's nearly working (but not yet working) it's unlikely to be understood by us.
Our bloke was treated to a chorus of "you don't know what you're doing" the other week when, at 1-0 down, he withdrew our top scorer and replaced him with an AM. Two swift goals later, the singers shut up, and what's more it later emerged that the withdrawn striker was injured. Our lot should have been singing "we don't know what you're doing".
None of which helps when yr team keeps losing games in the same stupid way, I know.
― Tim, Thursday, 5 February 2015 14:04 (ten years ago)
Hughes is at his best taking a team of shitkickers and gradually adding footballing elements on a budget, it's worked at both Blackburn and Stoke and that's about his level. Never again should he be allowed to believe he's a natural megaclub manager and certainly not put in charge of a club prepared to throw money at any problems that exist.
Ultimately clubs like QPR make it too easy for managers to take the easy way out of problems, which is fine until they get on the pitch. Lest we forget Redknapp is the man who decided to bolster our final push towards the Champions League with Louis Saha and Ryan Nelsen. Doesn't help that they tend to employ managers who are sharply on their way down, either.

sigh w/e. steward otm
weeks leading up to this i was in tearful fury at the thought of ending up here, limited battered-wife-syndrome pragmatism over the fresh idealistic opportunity of as near a clean slate as we're likely to have for another generation, but slowly i've given up the ghost
in comparison to redknapp/hughes he conducts himself with a degree of dignity (spinnable as stability), in comparison to redknapp/hughes he played a player in his position omg (phillips, will leave anyway), in comparison to redknapp/hughes his side sometimes made an inept plucky go of losing games rather than fucking them off entirely. dealt a crap hand but played it with very little nous, basic football and slow to react in games if at all
successive relegations maybe, maybe not, could hang in there, but any progress will be slow, imo slower than it could have been. no clue what ideas ferdinand and ramsey have for transfers (bits sherwood doesnt pick up i suppose) no idea what the money available will even be
meh i'm numbed fronting tbh this is another huge fuck-up

The final nail on Ramsey's coffin came at Pride Park when Warnock stormed into the Rangers dressing-room and lambasted the players over the manager's head.
A stunned Ferdinand wanted Ramsey, a close friend, to seize control but he failed to do so, and his departure was announced with the club convinced he had lost his authority.
