People have said I am wrong to publicly blame players, that Paolo Di Canio's way is not the right way to manage. But Redknapp has said the same thing as I have, which proves why I think I am a top manager.

Before Christmas, I also went to Stonehenge for the winter solstice. Swindon had just beaten Tranmere 5-0 and I waited until 4am before going there to see the sunrise. It was raining and I didn't see anything, so I left and went straight to training.

My personal view is that the club is intelligent enough to understand that when you're in the building process, you have to build. When you're building a house - if rain comes in because the roof isn't on yet, you've got to be patient and give people time to do the job.

They've got a massive advantage in terms of their endurance levels. I measure their endurance levels on the training ground and I know what athleticism they've got in their bodies. The footballing quality they've got is there. There are some timing issues and organisational issues that are stopping them from converting their play into goals.

Could I work with a chairman like Abramovich? Why not? It is important he does not speak anything about football to me.Of course, he could have an opinion as the owner and the first fan of the club, but he could not have an opinion on the way to manage, otherwise he should just become manager himself. For example, some chairmen in Italy seem to have the ambition to become a manager and speak in an arrogant way, saying what they think is wrong or right in public.I can work with any chairman.

Two injuries, rested a couple more, the boys who came in impressed you tonight?
(Long pause)
They impress me every day I work with them. Every single one of them. They impress me as people. Kelvin Etuhu didn't want to play tonight, and couldn't play tonight, because he felt he was going to let the boys down. I asked Jim McNulty could he play against MK Dons. He didn't want to play... because he'd let the team down. Now that is unselfish behaviour. That is behaviour that fits a king.
I need a boss with that attitude

We stay calm, we stay focused. And we stay positive. Because the positivity around the place at the minute is phenomenal. And it's a movement. And that movement's getting more powerful. Not by each result, by each performance.

Malky Mackay's agent is not a manager, and does not therefore belong on this thread. But.
football is a precarious business and Malky's decision to stay might not thereafter be matched by all the powers that be deciding that he should stay, so in some respects that's pretty much in the hands of other people.

I can't have a confident, compact, 'everybody in it together' football club if some supporters are shouting at me to get some of the players off who are 'rubbish'.They're not rubbish. They're exceptional people who are standing up to the challenges and the demands that I put in front of them. I never call my players rubbish and I wouldn't dare show them that lack of respect.

“We have to believe in what we do. We’ve had a few variables that have been changing a lot over the course of the last month, and I need to try to put more constants back into the game and back into the performance, and make fewer variables to discuss, quantify, assess and coach – and we’ll get back on it.

― Tim, Friday, 22 November 2013 11:54 (eleven years ago)
Actually, there's more of this which I think is worth it.
I’ve had a day or two in my study looking at all the factors. There’s what we’ve been coaching – as there’s often a correlation between what you coach and how the performance manifests itself – but also players in and out of form, combinations of players, systems, opposition, league, statistics and evidence.I’ve been swamped in evidence, rumour, gossip, discussion, debate and everything else – my job is to pick through it all and pick out one or two things to concentrate on, and I have done. That’s my job and I pride myself on digging deep.

(Tis has a particular way of expressing himself which can be hilariously at the managementspeak end of wisdom-of-gaffers but when he says something like that he's generally getting at something or other. I think in this case he's trying to convey to people that deciding on a team and tactics is complicated, and tweaking teams is even more so.)

If we don't win, on a Sunday morning it really doesn't work for me. I get a real strong feeling of anger. A real strong feeling of frustration. A strong feeling of looking in the mirror and hating myself. That isn't a good way for me to be and live.
That isn't a good way for me to be and live.
It's not a question of just needing to win because of a league position. That would be the last thing in the world that would drive me. What would drive me is my personal pride, desire and hunger.

I’m a humble lad with good morals from my parents. Work hard. If you have to clean the floor, make it the cleanest floor ever.
I read ‘The Horse Whisperer’. If that can apply to a horse, with all due respect to a horse, it must apply to humans.
My nirvana wouldn’t be buying a Bentley. My nirvana would be building a sports centre where I live, and not even having my name on it.
I made it clear to the players here: ‘Whatever your key motivation is, I have no problem with it. If it’s money, go for it. If it’s winning, go for it. My drug was winning. Glory? Fame? Nice lady? Big car? Go for it. That’s all fuel that can drive you. If you understand the fuel, and use it for the betterment of yourself and others, I’m happy.'
I’m not a fashion item.
There are lots of managers out there, branding themselves up to the eyeballs, coming out with fancy words, new sayings. I’m sick of hearing about ‘philosophy’. It’s a posh word for game-plan. Everyone now says: ‘if you haven’t got a philosophy you haven’t got a brain’. I find that bizarre.

What really upset me was the way that the team almost rounded on Daysie (Stevenage goal keeper Chris Day) looking for an excuse. That isn't the togetherness that's the Stevenage togetherness, that's not the togetherness that wins you anything.

Yes, I think it's a yellow card, but we're not playing in my day or Derek's day. If it had been in that we'd have played on, but we're playing in the day now and it's a yellow card.

This football journey at Bury is full of good people, and Clive is another great human being to have with us. He knows football inside out and his experience will be invaluable to us in the final twenty games and will be extremely valuable for us to move forward. Clive is a leader of men and enjoys leading a team. His hold up play is second to none and now that we have plenty of pace and power in the squad, it will be important for Clive to hold the ball up for us. Now it is my job as manager to make sure that the movement in and around Clive is devastating to the opposition.
Obviously I know the manager very well and his enthusiasm rubs off any player, no matter their age.

We are that surprise package and that can be favourable to us. We have got a team who play without that feeling that them other clubs have got because there is that demand on those clubs to get the job done.Ours is slightly different - we have our own expectation, of course - but the outside expectation is lesser so on Burnley than them boys who are up there now.

We're not going to look for excuses for ourselves but the goalkeeper's got the ball in his hands, Revell makes no contact with the ball, a lot of contact with our goalkeeper and the ball runs loose: 99 times out 100 I think you'd see a free-kick in that situation.

Despite what people think, I don't scream and shout at them all the time. I talk to them about what I think is important for them as individuals and the team.If they realign then fantastic; if they don't we talk some more and if they don't then, they disappear out the building.

here's what i said elsewhere:
he's at least as quotable as david flitcroft was last season, except that he has so much more dignity and gravitas, and is also a good manager
his quotability doesn't stem from wackiness and hyperbole [a la Holloway] but from his idiosyncratic attempts to express a coherent footballing philosophy at a club that's possibly never had one before
it's kinda beautiful

It has been so difficult to not love Burnley this season. It will probably end in tears as usual. Hopefully the bright spark prick behind the scenes who used big data (zx-spectrum with a 16k ram pack) to identify Brian Laws as the best manager for Burnley has since been pumped.

anyway that burnley squad was fairly terrible and he jumped ship at the right time, what are their prospects like next year?
― Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:14 (eleven years ago)
I saw them recently (culminating in this post Rock journalism, football discourse and British mistrust of "technique" which I'm fairly proud of)
they were very good. for half an hour we equalled them but they demonstrated an ability to 'win the big moments' - step it up when required, demonstrate solidity and a bit of thrust, always be that step ahead tactically. I know we're only Charlton but I do think they can replicate this trick on some of the more abysmal Premiership teams. they're solid, won't wilt under pressure and can score goals.
― imago, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:33 (eleven years ago)
i recall coyle's burnley and his first 18 or so months at bolton being fairly impressive, but he turned to shit so suddenly and comprehensively that i can't remember what was good about em and assume it must have been the product of lucky inertia.
― Merdeyeux, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 02:01 (eleven years ago)
seemed like Bolton were hit all at once by the steep decline of veterans, major injuries to key younger players (Holden, Lee, Muamba) and sale of Cahill w/o replacement and Coyle wasn't good enough to compensate
― anonanon, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 19:43 (eleven years ago)
It's a good season for Burnley to go up, because so many teams in the Premier League are in a mess at the moment. You could make a realistic case for any club outside the top seven getting relegated next season; Burnley only have to finish ahead of three of them. Their best 11 probably isn't that far off Palace's, and they're probably the most feared side in the division right now. Organisation and unity of purpose can get you a fair way in the Premier League at the moment, and Dyche is a big enough character to keep hold of a dressing room. He seems to have that Lambert-esque approach of making sure no one player is bigger than him, albeit with a fair bit more charisma than Lambert's got. He's also got a very solid strike pairing in Ings and Vokes, but whether they'll find Premier League defences as accommodating as Championship ones - and whether they'll have the confidence to persevere if they don't - remains to be seen.
That said - regardless of who comes up through the play-offs, Burnley will have the smallest budget in the top flight next season. Their squad is small and comprised chiefly of Championship-level players at the moment, and their first choice centre-backs are Michael Duff (36) and Jason Shackell (30). They'll need to be very, very cute in the transfer window - their current squad contains only two players bought from outside the English leagues (one from Cork City, one from Derry City), which suggests a narrow scouting network. Dyche has only paid money for one player in his time there (Ashley Barnes, c. £750k from Brighton) - that's likely to change this summer, but finding bargains from within England when you're in charge of a newly minted Premier League club is bloody difficult (see £6million man Dwight Gayle). What Dyche will do with the increased resources at his disposal, I don't know - he does talk an awful lot about staying grounded and working hard, and he doesn't seem likely to be tempted to take big gambles in the transfer market... but I'm desperately trying to shake this nagging suspicion that he might at some point this summer transform into Phil Brown. I think he's probably too sensible to do that. But.

My personal belief is that if you do it right all of the time, then you don't need to flick that switch and turn it on.
The focus on the game was absolutely spot on. That is a good thing because there is some of this group that will be competing in the division next year where there will be a lot of stuff going round and different protocols - maybe it was a tiny taster of that here.

Washington, though, endured a difficult start to the campaign, failing to score in any of his first nine league appearances, with his only goal before October coming in Posh's League Cup win against Crawley Town.
And the 23-year-old credits the advice he received from Graham Westley, who took over at London Road towards the end of his barren spell, for turning his season around.
“He used the analogy that your mum is locked up with a gun to her head in a room and the only way you can get her out is to win,” he said. “How would that affect your performance? It struck a massive chord with me and a few other players. He said it was not the nicest thing in the world to think of but use it if that gives you that edge and aggression. I was a different animal. He brought me out of my shell.”

Funnily enough it was my kids’ birthday on Wednesday and it’s my wife’s birthday today so it’s been a busy week for me.My twin boys Zach and Finn ran into my room yesterday shouting, ‘Daddy, we’re four!’ But I just pulled my covers over my head saying, ‘I don’t care if you’re four, leave me alone!’It really affects your life and it hurts so much when you get a bad result because you put so much into it and the whole club hurts. We hurt, the fans hurt, I’m sure the board hurts – everybody hurts. It’s difficult when your kids come in the next morning happy to be four and you’re telling them to go away and give you peace. That’s the job you choose though. It hurts a lot when you’re not winning and we need to make sure we get back to winning ways against Hearts on Sunday.

Feature on Graham Potter in the Graun
Upstairs at Brighton & Hove Albion’s striking Y-shaped training pavilion, Graham Potter is talking through how he came to lend his copy of the Dalai Lama’s Ancient Wisdom, Modern World to one of his former players at Östersund a couple of years ago. Curtis Edwards was at home watching Netflix when, around 8pm, the manager called asking whether he was busy. Kyle Macaulay, the scout who has followed Potter from Sweden to Swansea and now Brighton, drove Edwards to the Jämtkraft Arena and for the next hour and a half Potter and he spoke openly about almost everything but football.“We were just chatting and chatting and we got on to reading,” explains Potter. “In the end, I just said: ‘Have a read of that.’ Curtis was one of those guys that whenever he made a mistake, he beat himself up a lot and it was just trying to change how he thought. I showed him games where his head was up in the air when he had made a mistake and actually he should have been reacting to what’s happening rather than worrying and beating himself up about making a mistake. The Dalai Lama is quite a clever guy, isn’t he? He puts things into perspective a little bit, and I just thought: ‘Why not?’”

We've got a live one in Motherwell's Stephen Robinson:
We lacked real men. They had more men in their team. I don't think they out-passed us or outplayed us. We played with no purpose. We passed for the sake of passing without trying to break them down. When Declan Gallagher is playing with a high temperature and flu and he's the best player on the pitch for us, it tells you he's a proper man, proper footballer.Players have a habit of making you look stupid, but that's the level of player we're able to recruit, and we have to educate them. That has to happen sooner rather than later or they won't play in the team.

a treasure trove here from clyde's danny lennon:

"I would bring back national service," he says. "There you go."As a parent myself, we've only got ourselves to blame. I'm not saying we've brought our kids up badly, but most kids want for very, very little."There's no respect or discipline for people of authority now. You can even see kids, when the police stop them, actually videoing the police questioning them. It's incredible."With the way you handle younger players now, there are very, very little that can take constructive criticism well, it's just the soft generation we have. As long as you're honest and can back criticism up, the players have got to come round to your way of thinking and you find a solution together. It's not us and it's not them; it's we."

"Give me 20-25 kids, and I would take them away to an island for five years where nobody could get access to them and then bring them back," he says. "Discipline, total football, no outside influence, and work with them daily. I would love somebody to invest in that for three years to see where it could take you."In Spain, they do that to a certain degree. The infrastructure and housing clubs have for kids from all over Spain, they have them in there as footballers and give them that education. We've got technically gifted players, as good as there are in Spain. The difference is, I find foreign players are more aware before they receive the ball of what's in and around them."If you watch a wee sparrow on a fence, its head's on a swivel, it's always watching for predators coming. It always knows where the defender is, where team-mates are. It's that awareness we've got to improve."

I advise my players to have sex for short periods and with the minimum of effort and use positions where they are under their partners and preferably with their wives. Because if with others, well, that will need extra action.

Not really in the spirit of the thread but it’ll have to do. This story was told on the Exeter fans forum today:
They used to tell a story at Plymouth Argyle, going back to the days when Peter Shilton had been placed in charge of the team, that offers a little snapshot perhaps of how sometimes even the greats of the sport can lose their sheen once they dabble in the unforgiving world of football management.Shilton was player-manager, or rather goalkeeper-manager, at the time. Plymouth were slipping into trouble in the old Third Division, the fingers of relegation closing round their necks for the second time in three years, and Shilton was trying to encourage his players to believe they could clamber away from the bottom three and rise like a “pheasant from the flames”.After a slightly awkward silence, someone tentatively pointed out the word he might have been looking for was “phoenix”. Shilton, standing in front of his players as a double European Cup winner and the record England appearance-maker, paused for a few moments to take it in, the realisation dawning that his motivational speech had not gone quite as planned. He needed a line to reassert his authority. “I knew it began with an F,” he said.

"Anybody can be a coach or a manager and go and say ‘right, there’s a possession, there’s a game and there’s some passing’. Anybody can do it. But not everybody can do it like [Fotheringham]."
Kenny Miller, Huddersfield Town.
not strictly the gaffer but I do understand why Fotheringham has brought in someone to the club who is even dumber than himself.

From Mark Fotheringham's Wiki page:
Mark McKay Buzz Lightyear Fotheringham (born 22 October 1983) is a Scottish football coach and former player who is currently not succeeding as coach of EFL Championship club Huddersfield Town. He became the head coach after a rather romantic evening with Leigh Bromby in Da Sandros where he was promised a lucrative 3 year deal for bending over when prompted.

he's objectively the worst htafc manager I've seen in my lifetime. I won't go too far into it because it would be a very fucking tedious and long post. Short version: extremely thick, tactically clueless - does pointless like for like subs when a game is desperately needing a change, constantly throws players under the bus publicly and more frequently the younger ones. But this is worst bit, he talks absolute garbage but aggressively adds "Listen!" too every sentence! Also even lots of people outside of the world of online HTAFC fans are starting to notice how extremely deranged + embarrassing his post-match pressers are, without fail every week it's like he's commenting from a parallel universe about a completely different match and some of the football podcasts have picked up on this and even they have noticed how bizarre it is that this inconsequential moron is managing in the 2nd tier of english football

“I think the vegan food is quite nice – I enjoy it. Chips are vegan, I didn’t know that. It is a worry with the planet. It is a shame what is happening: you can see it is happening and we are all starting to be aware of it. What is going to happen to our kids and grandkids? It’s real. The club has been great, it is fantastic what they are doing. Other clubs should be taking it up. I had a wee bit of vegan curry, a wee pie and mash today. I haven’t tried the burger yet. I might try one on Saturday if we get a victory.” Duncan Ferguson

“So yes, I missed out on a couple of good players early on in the summer, but I’ve always been a massive believer as a manager in fate, and when a player tells me they’re going somewhere else I always say to them ‘well it’s your mistake, son, you’ve missed out there’, and that’s how I feel. I don’t dwell on it, I always just think ‘well, something will happen, they’ll get injured or something’. I just get on with what I’ve got and try not to moan about it too much.”

Bear with me with this one but it's something I've often thought about it. Managers (and players too now) often refer to "moments" when talking about games but I'm pretty sure this wasn't a part of gaffer vocab until the advent of non-English speaking managers and players into the English/British game, and it still sounds kind of weird coming out of the mouth of, say, Sean Dyche rather than Arsene Wenger. I want to say it was Dutch players who I first noticed doing this but can't be certain.
