Thiago Silva & Brasil '13: The Confederations Cup Thread

Group A: Brazil, Italy, Mexico, Japan

Group B: Spain, Uruguay, Tahiti, Nigeria

Disappointed by Japan in the opener, didn't have their usual pace or stamina. Neymar opened the scoring on a terrific volley; my 6 year old in the Japan shirt was calling for hand ball on Fred but I don't think you'd ever call that back. Brazil had most of the possession and the better chances, Japan's shots were from distance and right at the keeper. Brazil's second goal should've been stopped by Kawashima, who's made too many mistakes in recent months. Uchida did a good job keeping up with Neymar on the wing. Honda tried hard but couldn't beat the pressure, it didn't help that David Luiz kept shoving him without drawing a foul. Endo looked old and tired and couldn't complete any of his longer pass attempts, the team improved when he was replaced. Brazil were clearly the better team, despite the perception that they're not that good these days, which bodes badly for Japan fans like me

Hard to imagine Japan getting enough points from Italy and Mexico to advance, which means this afternoon's game in Rio could decide the non-Brazil team to come out of Group A.

Spain - Uruguay this afternoon should be fun to watch.

Plasmon, Sunday, 16 June 2013 17:39 (eleven years ago)

You could've had Sergio Ramos & Brasil '13, but maybe save that for next year, we might be able to get even closer

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 18:02 (eleven years ago)

maybe Jordan Hendes, if England get there

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 18:21 (eleven years ago)

Sickly child nets, 1-1. I just switched on, what was the blasphemy for?

That's a great goal from Balo, proper centre-forward shit

Third Rate Zoo Keepers With Tenth Rate Minds (Windsor Davies), Sunday, 16 June 2013 20:41 (eleven years ago)

Amazing that someone who has such difficulties putting on a shirt takes it off so many times when he scores tbh

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 16 June 2013 21:27 (eleven years ago)

I can never see that Uruguay-Ghana penalty sequence often enough. Gorgeous.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 21:51 (eleven years ago)

ffs I won't be inviting Jonathan Pearce to any party I'm throwing

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 21:55 (eleven years ago)

I want to put this Uruguayan XI in sharp suits and shoot Godfather III properly.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:00 (eleven years ago)

Spain looking amazing thus far. They've got a bit of knife-through-ham-sandwich about them in this incarnation.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:13 (eleven years ago)

feel like Spain ought to get all Corinthian about this and decline to accept any goal resulting from a deflection

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:39 (eleven years ago)

i wonder what it's like actually living in uruguay day to day, do you just get elbowed in the face waiting in line at the post office and stuff

r|t|c, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:39 (eleven years ago)

uncharacteristically poor ball from robert downey jr there

r|t|c, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:42 (eleven years ago)

srsty you can train english yoof for a thousand years and never get an exchange as casually excellent as that between alba and pedro on the left just then

How much do Spain ever gain from the faceclutchy stuff? It's like whenever Robert Plant starts singing about Tolkein.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:47 (eleven years ago)

I bypassed Uruguay when I was down that part of the world xps and have always regretted it. I expect the border guards would've greeted me with a handshake and a rake down the shins.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:49 (eleven years ago)

I've no idea why those bastards of Dutch public broadcasting decided to broadcast this tournament live in its entirety. It's not like I haven't better things to do, like word. Or sleep. [/blue saturday]

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 16 June 2013 23:05 (eleven years ago)

Also that Pirlo goal was nice and all but there was an odd touch of the grobelaars abt the goalie.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 17 June 2013 19:34 (eleven years ago)

I met a Tahitian once on holiday. I quite fancied myself at table tennis and challenged her to a game. I didn't know that irl she was a pro tennis player. She let me have a few points then completely destroyed me, it was brutal.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 17 June 2013 19:41 (eleven years ago)

ronnie whelan and richard sadlier squabbling over whether tahiti should be allowed in tournaments like this because theyre so bad.

Tahiti has nearly 200,000 people I've discovered. Not quite so impressed now, that's not far off Iceland and they've still got half a shot of making the World Cup.

Not sure how I feel about the tearjerky poverty feature. Brazil's a fairly wealthy place. Per capita GDP is the same as Poland and a lot higher than Ukraine, but I don't remember any of this last summer.

Gutted to see Japan go out after such a spirited effort. Watched it with the whole family, scared the toddler shrieking for Okazaki's equalizer, Kagawa hitting the crossbar, and Yoshida scoring while offside. Can't believe Yoshida's mistake that led to the own goal and the call for handball that gave Balotelli the PK. Overall that was easily the best I've seen them play against top opposition.

We were thinking of taking the kids to Brazil next year to watch Japan in the World Cup, looks like that might be worth the trouble.

Yeezus Built My Hot Rod (King Boy Pato), Thursday, 20 June 2013 10:07 (eleven years ago)

Uruguay v Nigeria is key tonight. If that's a draw, Uruguay go into the Tahiti game needing *goals galore*

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 20 June 2013 10:11 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, not sure why they changed CBs from the 2010 World Cup team when they had Tullio (with the samurai hair) and Nakazawa (with the J-Fro). Yoshida's a bigger guy but he's so maddeningly inconsistent. If the central defense was just half-decent (and if they had a striker, nice work aiming the open header right at Buffon, Maeda), they'd be competitive even at the highest level.

Plasmon, Thursday, 20 June 2013 18:53 (eleven years ago)

I don't know why I'm watching or expecting big slaughter - top European sides ease to unexceptional victories against minnows all the time. Uruguay never play minnows afaict though, Suarez and Cavani could be like polar bears loose in the penguin enclosure.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 20 June 2013 20:02 (eleven years ago)

Exactly, I admire their gusto to try and score that one goal. They are going after the Moby Dick of goals, and I admire them for it.

This. Just went on a short twitter rant about all the people saying "poor Tahiti" and the like. They are competitors, not like they didn't know what they were getting into. Healthy competition is all about stepping outside your realm and giving all anyway.

Just ran right through Italy-Japan. What a game, you weren't wrong.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 21 June 2013 19:46 (eleven years ago)

Okazaki's deflection should've counted, the defender nearer the camera had kept him onside.

The announcer keeps calling Nagatomo "Nagamoto", which is driving my wife crazy.

Japan's had the better chances but remain dedicated to shooting straight at the keeper.

Plasmon, Saturday, 22 June 2013 19:28 (eleven years ago)

I wondered if anyone'd be watching that one.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 22 June 2013 19:31 (eleven years ago)

Hah, we get up at 4 in the morning to watch the Nihon Daihyo on Justin TV, not going to miss a Saturday afternoon game on HDTV.

Plasmon, Saturday, 22 June 2013 19:40 (eleven years ago)

I'm not going to pretend I know what that is. Enlighten me.

(you're missing nothing in the other game btw)

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 22 June 2013 19:44 (eleven years ago)

Nihon Daihyo = Japan national soccer team. We watch all their matches, the 6 year old watches interviews and knows the names and numbers of the entire squad

Plasmon, Saturday, 22 June 2013 19:57 (eleven years ago)

Story of the game so far from Japan is that Endo has been terrible again (he played well against Italy) and Hosogai is no substitute for Hasebe (suspended) at DM so there's no link up play downfield.

Also it looks super hot and humid and no one seems terribly energetic.

Plasmon, Saturday, 22 June 2013 20:02 (eleven years ago)

You were really excellent against Italy. I kinda feel the team needs a streak of nastiness in it though, either a really evil centre back or a deadeyed striker. They seem slightly too nice.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 22 June 2013 20:03 (eleven years ago)

Well of course they're nice, they're Japanese. The only modern nation nicer than Canada IME. Their 2010 CBs were tougher but somehow they're not on the new coach's call up list. They've never had a world class striker.

Well deserved goal by Chicharito Ina beautiful cross, Mexico have controlled the entire 2nd half.

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 22 June 2013 20:41 (eleven years ago)

Havenaar's never managed to really make his mark yet at Vitesse. He seems mightily cool though

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 22 June 2013 20:42 (eleven years ago)

Of course I switched off a minute before half time :o(

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 22 June 2013 20:46 (eleven years ago)

I missed the first half, heard everyone bitching about the match. But seen a miraculous assist by Balo, great free kick goal by Neymar and ruthless finish by Fred. I'm not complaining.

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 22 June 2013 20:47 (eleven years ago)

Fred 4-2

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 22 June 2013 20:49 (eleven years ago)

Japan switched to 3-4-3, still couldn't pass the ball through midfield. Okazaki was the only one who looked like he wanted to shoot. Playing most of the starters in a WC qualifier plus friendly against Bulgaria within a week or 2 of the trip to Brazil was probably a mistake.

Zannen!

Plasmon, Saturday, 22 June 2013 20:56 (eleven years ago)

11 goals in 31 matches ain't that bad, I thought.

Ludo, Sunday, 23 June 2013 08:30 (eleven years ago)

Yeah ok, I'll give you that one Ludo :)

Just wish he could be more of a presence in Vitesse's squad. He's kept the bench warm a lot, in line behind Bony and Reis. Would like him to start more often, as I think he can bring a lot more than he is doing now.

Just came back from work, caught the last three regular minutes and saw:

- a Torres that looks more dead than alive
- Ramos embracing the post as if without he couldn't stand on his feet anymore

Is this a death match? Is it 50 Celsius? Everyone looks destroyed.

What happened? I am confused.

Italy - Uruguay for 3rd place in front of a half empty stadium. Italy leads 1-0 at the half, Cavani levels it, Buffon makes an incredible double save on Forlan to preserve the tie during a spell of Urugauyan pressure, Diamanti scores an amazing free kick only to have Cavani equalize again on an even better free kick from even farther out. Beautifully open play, chances back and forth now, 10 minutes to go.

national salvation as a cornish pasty being flung from hand to hand before a giant ogre can crush the life from your lungs. but who eats the pasty?

rockety communism (imago), Monday, 1 July 2013 00:30 (eleven years ago)

god i remember reading this daily telegraph article where they asked an esteemed chef to do a menu of 'blokes food' which was like veal roasted in ale and other tryhard dogshit, god forbid blokes would deign to consume anything that a homosexual or a woman might eat

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Monday, 1 July 2013 00:32 (eleven years ago)

prop forward turned celebrity chef (Ste), Monday, 1 July 2013 08:18 (eleven years ago)

Vickery left school age 16 and worked as a herdsman on his parents' farm. He remains a qualified cattle inseminator.[4]

Vickery has an Oriental tattoo on his left shoulder which roughly translates to "I'll fight you to the death", and a bulldog tattoo on his right.

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Monday, 1 July 2013 12:47 (eleven years ago)

not sure exactly how one becomes a nonpractising, defrocked, emeritus cattle inseminator

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Monday, 1 July 2013 12:47 (eleven years ago)

wrong hole, maybe

I didn't see the anthems last night. Fuck me, that Brazilian rendition was emotional.

Massive strategic error by the Spanish, going with an instrumental.
