turns out tisdale is actually bezzy mates with ray kelvin of ted baker so some might say i did him a disservice there

haven't seen that book before William, will have to get round to reading it. Jackett has already been a million times more effective as a communicator than his predecessors, and is carrying a lot of good will at the moment. how long that will last if the results don't come immediately i don't know. not long, knowing our fans. there's a separate issue about whether we can't or won't bring in players but i like the guy and am cautiously optimistic.

xp - yeah, the communication and man-management really comes across, as does his ability to make the most of his resources. Tactical stuff, not so much, but it's a really good read about the constant uphill battle of trying to make a Football League club work in this day and age. Tbh, I'd recommend it even for those without a vested interest in Jackett and/or Millwall.

There's so much fun to be had in this year's Championship:

- YEOVIL. They'll have a hell of a time attracting anyone who's good enough to play for them, but their time in the second tier will just be so much fun. If you can make the away trip, do. The parking is horrific, the away catering (when I went three or so years ago) is literally two blokes in a burger van, the away end (again, this may have changed) is an uncovered terrace and Saints brought so many fans I had to stand in the gangway. You can totally imagine how happy I was. Also, Gary Johnson got Bristol City to within 90 minutes of the Premier League a few years ago, and him and Yeovil are like some magic combination or something. They might be less doomed than you think.

- Steve Lomas is managing Millwall, with Mick Harford as assistant manager. This is like some perfect storm of tastiness, even if Lomas is ex-West Ham. And Harford is ex-Luton.

- Blackpool have signed Michael Chopra. Paul Ince is being aggy everywhere. A thing will happen.

- Yeah, McDermott at Leeds is gonna be dangerous. This might actually be their year (or maybe just the play-offs, but in a bit less sulky a fashion than before).

- Adkins gets a proper run-up at Reading. Suddenly he has everything to lose (he'll be fine, he's Adkins).

- The year we find out if Owen Coyle is actually just a fluky madman in a fleecy sweater.

- Billy Davies may not actually be in the top five angriest managers in this division now. Fucking hell.

- BARNSLEY IS MAGIC

- 'arry will blatantly be in the Leicester job by November.

I realise I haven't mentioned any actual players there, but... that's hardly the point, is it?

The fact that some Millwall fans draped a banner across the gates of The Den telling Lomas to “f**k off” because he is a former West Ham player will only motivate him further to succeed.

There is absolutely no doubt who is in charge, though, and Robinson admits Lomas reminds him of Dennis Wise, who took the club to the 2004 FA Cup Final.

I think two or three of Barnsley, Millwall, Charlton or Huddersfield will finish above some of the big spending parachute money bismarcks. Reading will piss the division, Bolton to push them all the way and Blackpool, Burnley and Birmingham for the drop. Yeovil will battle their way to safety, only just. It will be probably be like last season where there was a 7 point swing between pushing for the playoffs and relegation dogfight.

Blackburn seem to have strengthened in a sensible manner and if Rhodes gets good service he is easily capable of 30+ goals. He is the most clinical finisher I have seen in the flesh, but I suppose that is after a decade of mostly watching League 1 football.

Leicester have some exceptional players and should have done better last season, Knockaert has serious potential and they were unlucky Wood got injured at a time when he was damn near unplayable.

From what I have been reading the crisis clubs could be Leeds and Birmingham cos they are both have debt problems and nefarious couldn'tgiveafuck owners.

Charlton have signed Simon Church who was abysmal on loan at Hudds last season, that could be a bad move. Even our chairman publicly berated him saying "I think we must have accidently signed his twin brother".

Middlesbrough had the opposite type of season to Barnsley and barely won after the new year and were garbage. I would rather be a Barnsley supporter.

I have an affection for Flitcroft after the Yorkshire love in we had in the last game. 2-2 and town at some points of the game were in the unlikely position of being in a relegation berth on 57 points and Barnsley needed a point to stay up after the news filtered through that Palace had gone ahead against Peterborough consigning them to the trapdoor, as long as we just piss around with the ball for the last 2 minutes. I am surprised there wasn't an FA enquiry, Vaughan signalled to the Barnsley keeper it's your ball I ain't going to challenge for it and some players just sat on deck. It had been a full blooded local derby up to that point. It would have been a sin if Barnsley went down after such a heroic recovery.

It's 7.45 and I am sitting, hung over and sleep-deprived, at Peckham Rye railway station, setting off for Exeter for the first game of the season. I have no expectations of the game, or the season for that matter, but still I've this nagging sense of excitement. I'm glad I haven't outgrown it.

And now I bother to read this thread and see a sea of Tisdale up there. Good or bad omen? I hope he wears something fetching today.
(Also we're playing Bristol Rovers today and before this fixture I'd often have a quiet word with Martin Skidmore... Funny the times you find yourself missing people. The start of the season often makes me oddly sentimental, as does a hangover. RIP Martin.)

deserved win for us today, although we rode our luck not to lose if that makes sense. hoilett was miraculously in shape and motm, aj looked sharp, faurlin put a great shift in. defence was still shonky and henry (who wasnt awful but hardly any good either) shouldve been punished twice for losing the ball dicking around on the edge of the box or thereabouts. sticks in the craw to see barton playing but he worked hard and many of his deliveries i grudgingly have to admit were a cut above this level

Town had one of the worst goals against columns in the league last season and no pacy, composed centre back signings yet. SM was on loan for the 11/12 promotion season and enquiries were made and the chairman said at a fan Q+A that he was beyond our budget. Since then they must have noticed he is good, he signed a 4 year contract extension last year and was a decent performer in the prem. Our chairman made a similar mistake with Lambert and didn't want to pay a mill for a 28 year old player from Bristol Rovers "because he had no resale value at his age". Tbf on him he has invested a lot of money on training facilities, wrangling the stadium shares back from the RL chairman who knicked it for 2 quid and set up a rental formula that financially crippled the club for years.

Just spent an enjoyable afternoon watching Dulwich Hamlet (nominally my English side) beat Lowestoft Town 2-0 on their return to the Rymans Premier despite being under the cosh most of the game and going down to 10 men after 55 mins.

We signed Daniel Carr from Dulwich Hamlet not long after there were reports in the press that Chelsea + Liverpool were after him. He has only featured for the U21's so far, but some folk say he could be one to watch.

we're gonna play much harder teams than Gillingham this season but that was pretty great. total dominance, excellent performances from Griffiths, Ismail, Davis, Evans and Batth, proper football, probably shd've scored 8 or 9, Mad Dog dressed up as Santa as an extra treat. gonna have to do the 300 mile round trip every fortnight now.

How shit were Gillingham? We completely outplayed Sheffield Utd today and it's Gills next week. I worry that an ex-Brentford manager and 3 ex-Brentford players will suddenly remember to play properly, or at least be sufficiently motivated to kick us into submission.

Got to Kings Cross to discover my train was cancelled. Then realised ALL trains out of KX were cancelled. Headed over to Liverpool Street to try to get a slower service changing at Cambridge. Hundreds of people had had the same idea - the train was rammed to bursting point and dozens were left on the platform. Decided to try a fiendishly complex alternative route. Eventually got on a train that went within a couple of miles of my house some two hours after I'd left it. Currently watching my weekend disappear at Stansted Airport.

We don't have any real width cos of injuries to the full backs and wingers. Losing the best keeper in the division and replacing him with a nervous, bumbling kid has cost us in too many games.

Ahhhh Carbone. He's always been this semi-mythical figure from my early youth, that rarest of all beasts, a flair player at Aston Villa. All my memories of him had gradually been distilled to that hat-trick against Leeds, which I'm pretty sure is still as good an individual performance as I've ever seen in the flesh.

Hadn't thought about him for years until I checked his wiki recently, was incredibly disappointed to find that he'd only actually scored four league goals for us, I had in mind that it was more like 15. Never wikipedia search yr idols I suppose.

What's the context for him being a fascist? His wiki page is admirably spartan.

It is a very busy period so I would guess some of them must have replacements lined up already. It sounds like Coyle was loathed by Wigan fans and fan power might have swayed the chairman. Jones was hopeless, he spent over 2 + half seasons making a team of long ball thugs, blaming everything on referees apart from one game against Town where he was conspicuously quiet after Helan got 2 yellows and the ref failed to send him off. That current Wednesday team would struggle to stay up in League 1, they are the worst I have seen at this level.

Poor Flicker, I really wanted him to succeed and we were kind enough to roll over for their other win.

Why oh why do we need a debate now. The weakness up front and midfield has been blatantly obvious for weeks. The Loan window has come and gone and as usual nothing happened apart from pulling out of a potential striker signing. It is no good KJ saying we need to be more ruthless etc and doing nothing about it. For me he started off well but appears to have slipped and for me the jury is still out. For the umpteenth time of saying it we need a striker and a good midfielder to replace Edwards. On the plus side Henry should be back soon and Jacobs looks very promising. Personally I like Sako but!!!!!! At the end of the day I think questions still need to be asked of the commitment of the board and the deadly duo. UTW

The club will do business in january though i doubt it will see the team strengthened.I see both henry and jacobs coming in for 500k however sako will be sold hennessy and doyle if there are takers.Therefore a minimum of 2.5 million trousered by the builder i said at the start of the season the aim was to spend as little as possible.What id like to know is whats the policy when pinky n perky have sold all the worthwhile playing assests at a guess free transfers from the conference god help us as long as these 2 clowns are in power.
