sold a copy of new morning to a preppy-looking high school kid. VG/VG+. $4
lovely day outside. could be slow. hell, even i'd be outside if i wasn't working. that's how nice it is.
sporadic record-related updates as events occur.
last saturday a completely out of it middle-aged man got tazed outside my store at LEAST ten times. While standing and while on the ground. as he lay on the ground with handcuffs finally secured to his wrists he kept yelling: "white ni**er, white ni**er, white ni**er" over and over in his delirium. time it took for entire police force to show up: five minutes.

had a nice visit from my brother's friend bob. formerly of se*a*oh. when i start having bands play here i'm gonna ask him to play. he's got good taste in records. or maybe it's just my kinda taste. bought a Gershwin boxed set and a Crow record and some other things.
now it's off to ebay to list some U2 rarities. LOVE selling stuff on ebay that i care nothing about!

the worst are the guys who come in and like, just don't "get it." Like they ask "Why do people listen to records instead of CDs? You can't put a record on your ipod, blah blah blah." Or the guy who was like "I listened to the new Eminem record at my friends house on vinyl and I didn't think it sounded any better than a CD..."

this is a weird thing to complain about, and i'm not really complaining, but this guy - very cool, nice guy, record collector - told me he had a big box of old heavy metal magazines that he would just give me for the store. i thought: cool! i used to dig heavy metal when i was a kid. what i think must have passed me by was how seriously tacky and embarrassing so many 90's heavy metal magazine covers are. So many sub-Olivia/Boris softcore pinup covers. oy vey. i mean, the mag was seriously raunchy in the 80's too (yes, i was a Den fan) but then at least you would have some weirder moebius covers or more sci-fi stuff in general. inside too, just sooooooo much comix porn. oh well. i'll put them in a dark corner somewhere. i mean, i want women to shop here. and gay women at that. i am in western mass after all.

since this is also the people watching thread i would like to introduce a little character known as "inner child."
inner child made his first appeerance in over a year today. Short man wit thinning, oversized t-shirt (often with wizard or dragon) & jean shorts, sandals. Incredibly whiney voice--he is identifiable over the phone, as sometimes before coming (from Jersey) he'll call to ask if we "have any rare psychedelic or progressive lps" on the wall. upon walking in he will study the wall intently, asking what each & every record is like and often taking them down to examine etc. today was a fun day cuz we have a whole section of the wall with a lot of mediocre-but-rare uk folk stuff, and some prog. so he was all excited to learn about that. luckily today k33gan got the task of helping him pull down records to look at (short man as i said before.)
he was just at the listening station with two 8-10" piles of records stacked one atop the other on the floor, in front of the other turntable. when asked to move them he became confused and sort of non-responsive, needed to be reminded a few times to put the records on the table. he is into talking to you about records too of course! "do you like german stuff?" "i like the really heavy and progressive stuff."
― ian, Saturday, 18 July 2009 20:27 (fifteen years ago) link
he once punched j0hn all3n cuz j0hn said "SRC sucks."
lol i meant to write "thinning hair" but his t-shirts are also heavily worn.
― ian, Saturday, 18 July 2009 20:28 (fifteen years ago) link
i know it's not cool to make fun of the developmentally disabled, but i can't help myself. this guy is so ridic.
i think he goes shopping with his dad. some older guy, who he calls Stu. post-shopping argument with Stu about how much money he is allowed to spend etc (after trading in a variety of mediocre psychedelic & prog records etc.) getting agitated because he has to put records back into their sleeves and "you don't want them to be out of their protective sleevse do you?!?!" (we keep wall records out of the jackets.)

ha! hoo boy. all of a sudden i'm regretting that i post under my own name and everything. i feel like gossiping.
woman and her brother dumped four big boxes of records on me for free cuz they were getting rid of stuff from their grandfather's house. total city dump stuff as far as i'm concerned and i'm wondering why the hell i even agreed to take it when i pull out a prefectly nice copy of the Surfaris Play album on decca. In mono, even. yay! so, that alone is worth me having to haul everything else down to the basement. sounds great. I mean, it's probably only a 30-50 dollar record, but i'm always happy to see nice playable copies of records like that. it's the little things in life...

so, the funny story: these two twitchy street kids - kids who hang out on main street all day - came in with a stack of records. crap. but i buy a scarface soundtrack and a bill cosby record from them. then they come in later and i buy some sealed easy listening stuff from them. i ask them were all this stuff is from and the one sez: uh, you know, at home in my closet. they leave. then later ANOTHER twitchy kid comes in with a stack and some of them are in plastic with sleeves. nice clean copy of the first leonard cohen album. sealed johnny mathis album. so, i give him like 7 bucks for some records and he says: hey, maybe you should know, when you leave you should check out the dumpster next to robertos. i say: huh? and he says that there are THOUSANDS of records in the dumpster. i thanked him - and i'll give him 20 bucks for the tip if i see him again - and i closed the shop and ran over there. man, there really were thouands of records in the dumpster. i spent an hour and a half there. got about two hundred records. had my friend maggie come down with her car to cart them to the store. she got, like, 50 records of her own. weird mix of stuff. looked like an old man owned them all. tons of classical, which i felt bad about leaving, but i really would have been there forever if i had gone through them all. lots of old country. some disco and r&b. lots of sealed capitol stuff from the 50's and 60's. sealed nancy wilson records. near mint happysad tim buckley, some rock. sealed charlie louvin record. i'll go through it all tomorrow. nice haul though. some decent jazz. i kinda want to go back, but i gotta let it go. i went through pretty much everything. i don't want to go crazy. feel bad about leaving stuff knowing it's just gonna get thrown out. maybe i'll check back in the morning. got some definite pricey stuff. paul & paula record. cool stuff.

maria brought back these huuuuuuuuuuge old realistic 1210 speakers from florida (her grandmother is selling her house and pretty much everything had to go.) they are bigger than my kids. 120 watts. i put them right behind my tiny cd selection (mostly old metal promos that i sell for a dollar) in the store (the CDs are on the floor in a wooden rack type thing) and in front of my desk. anyone who wants to look at CDs on the floor is going to have to withstand some serious wattage. even with my receiver volume way down they are loud and clear. i'm passive aggressive when it comes to compact discs.

i have zillions of rap singles from the 2000's in my store and the other day i made a mix tape of the instrumental versions on the 12 inches and it's, like, the coolest mix i've made in forever. i can't wait to make another one. i looked for the super minimal stuff with lots of cool strings and computer fx. southern stuff, mostly. stuff is seriously addictive.

things are cool. definitely new people coming in and checking things out. it's not like i've done a ton of advertising, so it really is kind of a mix of word of mouth and people just stumbling in having no idea i was there. the regulars are pretty regular though. which is nice. slow sam cooke fan came in twice this week. he's an odd one. sort of an ed gein type, but nice enough. i don't know if i needed to hear the whole "new world order obama is trying to get rid of the internet and money and walmart is placing chips in all their merchandise to track customers" speech, but, what the hell, i'm not going anywhere.
the last week was way better than the week before too. august was the worst month by far. and i still did okay. i had two really deadly weeks though. that's when i hit ebay. i'm thinking next year that august might be a good time to go on a record-buying road trip/vacation. maria and i are heading down to hudson this weekend to pick up stuff at my brother's store. he's got so many records. it's scary. and i've got sooooo much stuff to put out before we go in order to make more room. i need more shelves. or something.

don't you go home occasionally?
― scott seward, Thursday, 1 October 2009 13:14 (fifteen years ago) link
went and looked at 10,000 records yesterday that some dude had in a storage unit. he wanted everything out for a hundred bucks. we passed. tooooooooo much crud. my back hurt just looking at it. i would have had to take 75% of it to the dump. hell, if HALF of it had looked decent i would have gone for it. and i might have actually done it if he had paid ME to take everything. cuz that was a serious fred sanford situation. still, i feel bad about leaving some of the decent stuff behind. even if most of the decent stuff was old oddball stuff that i would have a hard time selling. even those records deserve a good home.
― scott seward, Thursday, 1 October 2009 13:20 (fifteen years ago) link
I do go home occasionally. I was thinking about going home next week actually, definitely sometime before Thanksgiving if I can manage it.
Looking through thousands of shitty LPs is a really sad task. Too bad the guy wouldn't let you take what you wanted for the hundreds--surely he could find someone to take the remainder for free?
― ian, Thursday, 1 October 2009 17:43 (fifteen years ago) link
And if they were in storage space...oof, I don't want to think about shifting all those boxes.
i have a feeling he's gonna call me in a few days and ask me to take them all for free. but, you know, we'd have to rent a u-haul and that always cost money. taking stuff to the dump costs money...
i tried really hard to find, like, TWO big boxes of good stuff to justify my time and back pain. this stuff must havee belonged to a dealer at one point. all the good stuff was gone. this guy (who has the records now) used to work clearing houses and buildings. he thought he could eventually make money off of them, but he never got around to it. i tried to explain to the guy that it was like looking at a baseball card collection with all the rookie cards missing.

there is an international video festival happening all around me today till midnight. so i'm gonna stay open all night. got a 12 pack. might need some more cigarettes though. definitely need a coffee. it's been fun so far. bought some musty records off of a guy. dude had that whole body alcohol smell. some decent normal rock though. then my pal sasha dropped off some more records. some good punk. which is ALWAYS good to have. people will buy punk records they already have just cuz its such a novelty to see decent punk records in a record store. or at least around here anyway.

yeah, he was weird and kinda clueless. but also, you know, just guileless. i always figure whatever you do with stuff you buy is your own business, but he just seemed kinda nervous about the whole idea of selling records. it was weird. he had a friend who had made a lot of money apparently selling records. thus the interest.

it's official, Turn It Up is opening a store right near me here in greenfield. like, a block away. i think it will be good. plus, i'll have a place to browse in town! i am the only record guy here now. they sell records and lots of cds including new cds. which is cool too cuz the FYE store here blows. Turn It Up has a store in northampton and brattleboro and keene new hampshire. never been to the keene one. the brattleboro store is decent. i never go to the northampton one but i should cuz i know they get good stuff there. and chris cooper works there and he's a really nice guy/musician. oh and they have a small store at the montague book mill but i hear that might be closing. never found any good vinyl there. and raven books of northampton is opening a store in the same general spot here. they sell used books and remainders. and i think a coffee place is going in. and my friend maggie is opening a gourmet pizza place on the same block. greenfield is happening! i just had to move here to get the ball rolling. DEAD week this week. compared to last week which was a really decent week. so i've been ebaying to pass the time. got a bunch of stuff up.

it was fun. dj vaporattack was noise nomads dude. he laid down the phat beats. didn't stay for jackson hoose sadly cuz got too tired. dog synth was from baltimore. dug his really dirty sweater. was hoping he would lay down some bmore club trax but alas it didn't happen. or maybe it happened after we left...

people in greenfield would love that! well, some of them would...
maggie was convincing me last night to close on mondays. so, i'd be open tuesday to saturday. she is all for the five day work week. i might go for it. i was telling her how i was doing ebay in the store this week and actually getting annoyed when people came in to bug me while i was working! ha! if i was closed monday i could go out and about thrifting/looking at records/ebaying/whatever...and sunday would be my day to hang with the family. makes sense. being open six days doesn't give me a lot of time to go anywhere or get stuff done. plus, i'm old and feeble.
and until ian moves to greenfield to help me out i am only a one man operation.

wowee zowee this woman i know kinda (i bought some records off of her before) came in with a box of mostly crud and said that she had three more crates in her truck. i went out to look and it was like ian's wet dream. three boxes of old tyme fiddle and banjo stuff. get this though: 32 john fahey records! 32!
she was happy with the money i gave her but i didn't feel like it was enough so i told her if i put any of it up on ebay and got good money for it that i would give her a cut. cuz i'm cool like that. and i like her.

my kingdom for one xhuckx who can appreciate my dollar bins! i've got boxes of pristine 80's R&B and nobody even cares. so sad. are people like me so rare? if i have time i go thru everything in a store. unless its obvious that a store's dollar stuff is just the dregs of the earth. then i won't bother usually. i respect the dollar record. are my boxes totally crap free? no. sometimes i get lazy and throw some stuff in a box cuz its handy even if the condition is kinda poor.
having said that, i loved my store yesterday. i got to keep the door open cuzza the nice weather and lots of people stopped by and people brought me cool stuff and i sold cool stuff. it was nice.
oh and the other night was fun too. cool cats came and played some music. bob fay and his group with greg (from feathers) and others was really nice. whyte kastles! that's their name. greg and i talked records for a long time. he buys and sells. nice bunch of people in the store.
the band we had playing a couple of weeks ago from brooklyn were cool too. Father Figures. jazz horn stuff. i dug it.

crazy-ass old 45 collector here forever with a huge stack of stuff and i think he's gonna live here AND he's from boston and has a cab driver from boston here with him and the cab driver is getting antsy. cab driver apparently drives him around all over the place to buy 45s. i'm scared...

yeah, i mean, if he's buying a lot of records and asks for an insane deal just politely tell him you're willing to give him a break (10%?) but need to pay yer rent. does he have the air of an insane man? (aside from taking a cab around to buy 45s.)

lol plugged into a generic taxi fare calculator it cost 335 bucks.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 2 April 2010 20:02 (fourteen years ago) link
that wasn't actually THAT bad. he haggled. thing is, he took a lot of stuff that had been sitting here since i opened, so he kinda did me a favor. 50 cent and dollar stuff. i gave him a really good deal. he spent $155 bucks. he had, like, a dozen tapes (he collects tapes!) and i just gave them to him.

tbh riding in a cab chattin and listening to NPR from boston to record stores then back sounds like a kind of great day!

cab driver says he's a millionare who owns a lot of boston real estate. he NEVER sells records. so god only knows what kind of insane record fortress he has. this guy tj down the road with the insane jukebox 45 stash told me about him last year actually. he would come to tj's once a month by cab and load up. AND apparently tj sold all his 45s - has had hundreds of thousands of 45s - for a pittance. which i can understand. cuz you would have to have a tractor trailer truck to haul them away.

the lead singer of FAT just came in my store! love fat. or at least the first album anyway. haven't heard the second album yet. he just came in for change for the parking meter, but by the time he left he told me he would bring me sealed fat albums and unreleased fat jams on tape! can't wait to hear that stuff. he was nice enough to give me a sealed copy of the 1st album reissue cd with bonus tracks and a solo album he made down south in the 90's. fat were huge around these parts in the 70's. glad he didn't go to the thai restaurant for change. i don't think they are fat fans. he was an amazing singer. probably still is. when we first moved here there was a story in the paper about a guy originally from here who died in florida and his dying wish was to have fat play at his funeral.

a friend of mine who is a world-renowned artist has her studio around the corner and she got a turntable and she is really into getting records to play for when she paints. so she asked me to pick out records for her and she would give me a hundred bucks. she likes 70's rock and quirky stuff. she likes cool album covers. this is what i came up with. i wanted good art-making music. and i threw in some 80's stuff that might be conducive to creativity too.

um, lots of rock, but its all over the place. went there yesterday to check it out. boxes in the attic. boxes in the basement. boxes in the shed. great store stock stuff. i didn't even go through half of it. condition kinda all over the place, but i made a good deal for it all, and it will be worth my while. just gonna be hell dealing with it all. i'll close on monday so that i can sort and sift in the store. most of the stuff i'll want to keep will go in the basement. the rest i can let you go through and whatever is left i'll ask Big D (don't know if you know him. he works at the co-op.) to take. he loves taking my free boxes. he's got thousands of 45s at his place courtesy of me.
its a rag tag collection. not like some bagged and shelved pro collection. its from tag sales and flea markets and god knows where else. but i'm a rag tag kinda guy.

Store looks good. I like a record store diary. Wanted to ask you a question: I bought about 10 records recently from an expensive museum-y keep-it-on-the-shelf kind of place. The records all look real clean and unscuffed, but when I played them at home they sounded crackly and i felt a little robbed. Are there cleaning systems that are dishonest for a record store to use? Or might a record store use a shitty cleaning system without knowing it? On a different day at the same store I pulled out a twenty dollar copy of the first Mink Deville record and I looked at the price and was like, "Whatever, let me hear it." They didn't have a listening station but they could "put it on," and the guy was all smiley and said it sounds great but it was crackly too and I was thinking that these guys are kind of friendly smiley assholes.

Also, in reference to the above, I wouldn't think "omg so cheap" to six or eight dollar replacements records. Straight four in 2011 is cheap, though. Would expected records in Brooklyn to all be $1,000.

hmmm, i don't know. i would have to see and hear the records. its fairly common for a record to look great, but play with surface noise. i mean, it happens. i doubt they are cleaning their records dishonestly. i probably wouldn't shop much in a store that sold mink deville records for 20 dollars though.

Yeah, record shopping sucks in Orlando and I take a bite-the-bullet attitude sometimes when I get fed up with thrift store records or I want something I can't find at Florida's Dying, which is real small and stocked only with new stuff. I know Mink Deville is store stock territory, but I thought times could've changed and I was in impulse buy sacrifice mode. Didn't pay twenty bucks on that Cabret,ta though; bought Coup de Grace for eight and felt only mwinimal buyer's remorse. It had a NORMAL crackly sound that matched up with the way it looked.
Record shopping just sucks in general. I'm not at all finicky about sound quality but I always feel like I'm about to get ripped off, of I feel priced out of the competition to buy records I really want to listen to.

The bay area was cool because I'd go to an elephant sale and do three for ten on three records I was actually looking for. Don't get me wrong, this is my primary hobby and I've been unhealthily hemorrhageing money on records, lately, but I wish I had a good honest resource. Some of these guys running stores should be stuck at guitar center, if you ask me.

My favorite purchases lately have been from the two totally out of touch, out competed dudes who never rotate or discount their diseased old ass stock that nobody wants. I pretend I'm not spending what I am. Plus Florida has this serious brain drain problem, so the demographics of people getting rid of records is quite different. The retirees aren't a good source.

i love matt krefting. the first time i met him was circa 2004 in rural michigan. few hours north of madison in a town called soldier's grove. his band son of earth was playing and i was 'finding myself' on my first ever solo road trip. i ended up in a tent with him, aaron & john from son of earth, roger adultery & some of his band... drinking box wine and whiskey, waiting out the rain that started during Spires That In The Sunset Rise.
Last time I saw him, well, I was out of it and I felt bad for not being able to really hang.
