The thread for all things ebay. Crazy auctions, tips, bitching, moaning, LOLZ galore. Let's face it, whether you have a computer or not, Ebay changed the world forever for record buyers and collectors. If you were a shop owner you couldn't just throw that goofy looking 60's rock record in the bargain bin like you used to. Not if you had any brains. You had to look all that shit up. Ebay singlehandedly tipped the scales and changed the landscape and leveled the playing field. It is a thing of wonder and it is the devil.

As of this moment: dudes, It's still a buyers market. Stuff that used to sell for a hundred bucks five years ago is as common as dirt. You can get GREAT records for a song if you know what to look for. Heck, I bought a clean copy of the watts 103rd street ryhthm band debut (the one from 67. the hot heat one with the crazy cover) for six bucks last night. okay, fine, ten bucks with postage, but still...

ebay is a great time killer anyway.

ian, Saturday, 18 July 2009 23:47 (fifteen years ago) link

you can say that again.

scott seward, Sunday, 19 July 2009 00:38 (fifteen years ago) link

sometimes i remember that there are things OTHER THAN RECORDS on ebay, so i spend like three hours looking at lots of shitty sci-fi paperbacks.

ian, Sunday, 19 July 2009 01:45 (fifteen years ago) link

LOVE the level of detail in that description.

is the shipping a killer?

ian, Sunday, 19 July 2009 03:59 (fifteen years ago) link

not so much - partly because it's just a module with no keys. synth $540, shipping about $60. still a good bit cheaper than a local unit.

i have never looked for a record on ebay, i only joined last week! god this might get expen$$$ive.

easily-led zeppelin (haitch), Sunday, 19 July 2009 04:02 (fifteen years ago) link

ebay is a serious addiction.
you just want to bid on all this stuff! cuz it's a game--you can literally win! so you want to keep winning. i binge, then feel guilty and don't buy anything for months. then i blow a hundred bucks in a week and a half .

ian, Sunday, 19 July 2009 04:13 (fifteen years ago) link

I love ebay. for one thing, just for discovering new shit. I've made so many great finds through the 'view seller's other items'.

I came for punk and left with Bollywood.

And not even necessarily rare or difficult or underground stuff or whatever. just the millions of 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s pop records that maybe appeared in the ass end of the chart for a week or so and disappeared, which send you off to google and youtube. ebay + youtube makes for a great tagteam. that's when I thank these dudes posting voyeuristic videos of themselves dropping the needle onto a crackly 7".

how long has this board been around? I must have missed the memo. never noticed it until now.

I haven't bought anything on ebay in ages but I just did a buy it now on a Canadian pressing of Pierre Henry "Le Messe Temps Present .. " (the one with Psyche Rock) for $9.99. Might not be strictly "original" original but I don't think it's a recent pressing. Before that I was watching another copy of the same LP that a guy had offered for set sale at $40, didn't get a buyer, put it on ebay and it only went for $21.50 (I was at $21 and got sniped). I thought that was a $50 record too ... and the guy doing the sale is a "name" crate digger guy with a big email list, his stuff used to always get bid up like crazy. So yeah I'd say prices are down.

ian, Monday, 20 July 2009 05:25 (fifteen years ago) link

what about gemm.com?

I've found a couple of deals there. When I buy from there though it's usually a last resort for something i've been super keen on getting (eg Terminals' Touch)

wilter, Monday, 20 July 2009 10:13 (fifteen years ago) link

Gemm's a bit hit or miss for me. I've found some things on there that I sought after for a long time. Downside though is that half of the listings there is ridiculously overpriced, and some sellers for some reason just cannot be contacted.

so how do people deal with eBay's ridiculous new shipping cost limits? I just listed some box sets and it won't let me charge more than $3 for US shipping, for like six albums in a super heavy box. Is there some way to make exceptions or do I just have to say "email me for the real shipping cost" in every description?

I swear, it's enough to make me switch over to Discogs completely.

sleeve, Monday, 20 July 2009 17:29 (fifteen years ago) link

in your description you can tell people what the real shipping price is.

scott seward, Monday, 20 July 2009 17:38 (fifteen years ago) link

i just sold some records on ebay and i tell you, some of these record guys are really "specific"

I KINDLY ask you to mark the customs receipt as GIFT and the value as $10. In these last months, the Italian customs use to apply heavy duties to parcels coming from outside UE, starting with middle values declared.

I also have to ask you to ship the record in a cardboard BOX or in a STURDY record mailer, adding TWO inner stiffeners. It's the ONLY way to receive the cover NOT damaged in all corners. Please do NOT use those thin cardboard envelopes, that are EASILY flexible.

the moreno you knowshon (omar little), Monday, 24 August 2009 18:13 (fifteen years ago) link

WOW, that GUY sure is DEMANDING as HELL :)

There's only one thing I always ask when I buy something on eBay: take the records in their inner sleeves out of the outer sleeve, and put them between the gatefold sleeve (if it's a gatefold obv.). Had too many records coming in with busted outer sleeves because the record 'pressed' through them, because of shaking during transport I suppose.

i was shocked when i first received a request to change the value for customs. i just wrote some "receipt" that was like GIFT GIFT $5 for some $25 record

69, Monday, 24 August 2009 18:44 (fifteen years ago) link

i always write gift/record/$5 on post office customs slips.

a lot of people who sell records won't even sell to italy anymore. not cuzza obnoxious e-mails, but because of too many people saying they didn't get their records. supposedly their postal system is kinda fucked. i've never had a problem. i sell things to italy all the time. i did have one guy send me an e-mail like that though.

scott seward, Monday, 24 August 2009 19:21 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, i don't fuck w/ Italy anymore. garbage. shady Post or shady ppl, whatever, not gonna bother

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 04:15 (fifteen years ago) link

regardless, tho, I certainly don't think that omar's buyer's requests are unreasonable. You SHOULD use cardboard with, uh, "stiffeners" all the time, *especially* if shipping overseas. that's just being a bro.

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 04:16 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah it was more like, "dude i'm not an idiot, don't cap size me"

the moreno you knowshon (omar little), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 04:22 (fifteen years ago) link

You're not an idiot but plenty of people are. One guy sent me an album in a single piece of corrugated cardboard that he'd split in two.

danbunny, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 05:27 (fifteen years ago) link

LOL i do have fun oh yes i do:

Q: So this has no scratches or scuffs or any extra noise that will cause disturbance on playback? How's the base surface noise? Thanks.
A: Very little surface noise. And no "base" surface noise. This copy sounds great! it's a very clean copy.

Q: So can you clarify: NO SCRATCHES or surface scuffs that are audible during playback? I just bought a vinyl that was "VG++" and just had to return because it had obvious scratches that "ticked" on every revolution. Just want to make sure that's not the case here. Thanks.
A: Hmmm, well, you are certainly not the only person who has ever bought a bum record on ebay. I've bought my share. And I only buy records from people with 100% positive feedback ratings. But I'm not sure how much more I can reassure you about this record without you actually holding it in your hands. A lot of ebay is trust. I feel like I've described this album accurately. I've been selling records on ebay since 1999 - first as skotrok and then later i switched to my wife's account since she was all hooked up with paypal and because she gets all my money anyway - and i have never had anyone return a record. A LOT of sellers on ebay would be selling this record as near mint. Because it's really clean. But I'm fussy and I actually don't BELIEVE in near mint or mint. There is always some flaw. Even if something hasn't been played or is sealed. Or maybe I'm just crazy. I would actually advise you NOT to bid on this record. If you have any reservations about a description or a seller you should wait until another better description or seller comes along. Maybe someone will be selling a sealed copy next week! I'd hang in there and wait for the perfect copy.

so how long do you wait until you start to get a little pissed about not being paid for an item? someone won a couple of records from me on saturday, sent me a question the next morning which was basically, "will you be putting any more records up for sale?" and i said most likely and sent him a list. no reply, no payment yet, and i sent him a followup noting that if he was waiting for me to put more records up, i would still have to send them separately. getting a little antsy over here.

omar little, Thursday, 1 October 2009 18:49 (fifteen years ago) link

people are annoying. i used to have people win stuff and then they would tell me that they wanted to bid on other auctions of mine that still had, like, four days to go before they were over. it makes me antsy too.

this one guy recently gets my award for ballsiness though. he wouldn't pay. i'd e-mail him. he'd tell me that he needed more time. i e-mailed him again. nothing. THEN i look on his feedback and he has won and PAID for records that he won AFTER my record!!!!!!!!

scott seward, Thursday, 1 October 2009 19:02 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah it makes me antsier still because i had all these auctions end around the same time and everyone else paid within half an hour

omar little, Thursday, 1 October 2009 19:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Omar--when did you send the email guy saying you'd have to send a separate shipment? at least give him a day or two after that before sending another email. ppl like to combine shipping, especially if they're overseas. If he doesn't get back to you within a few days maybe you should just tell him you're probably not going to be putting up for records for x period of time (three weeks, a month?) and would prefer payment now or you'll offer to item to the next-highest bidder.

ian, Friday, 2 October 2009 01:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Did you put anything in the listng to the effect of "items must be paid within x business days or they will be relisted"? that's not really a bad idea--even if it comes across as being an anal weirdo, it's good to have it there for reference in later email discussions with buyers.

I can still charge international postage but this has stopped me listing things for a no-fee 99p and then it doesn't matter if they don't sell since basic postage in the UK is now part of the price. Now it'll cost me for everything I list even if it goes nowhere.

It also means that eBay are getting a bigger slice of final seller fees as postage is included in them now.

Disco Stfu (Raw Patrick), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 01:56 (fifteen years ago) link

It's the same deal for CD's and DVD's now too. There's no point in offering postage discounts for multiple items any more because, well, you can't charge postage anyway! Which means less sales, and less advantage for the buyer too as you have to be paying full postage on everything as sellers have to include the p+p in their listing fees. Hopefully ebay will invest the extra profit into their customer service HAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Does anyone know how much the Italian Post service charges for approx 1 LP? There is a seller in Italy wanting 20 Euros to Canada (which is like $35 CDN). Isn't that ridiculously high? Somehow he has 100% feedback.

In my experience, LPs coming from France/Germany/Belgium, the postage paid is about 7-8 Euro for 1 LP.

Michael Servetus, Sunday, 6 December 2009 04:14 (fifteen years ago) link

isn't the italian post notorious for losing packages? i feel like i've seen a lot of sellers who refuse to ship there.

mizzell, Sunday, 6 December 2009 06:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, there is that, too. I've sent to Italy with no problems, but many packages seem to "disappear" or take months to arrive.

Damn...do I really want to pay $20 Euro in shipping? :/

Michael Servetus, Sunday, 6 December 2009 08:03 (fifteen years ago) link

no, that is excessive.

Side 1's run-in grooves are silent and ultra smooth without any crackles or clicks and any low level static is not audible before
the massive impact of power and audio sharpness of the UK mono mix, is heard on the intro for the opening track "Drive My Car".
Paul's superb bass guitar lines are very prominent, the percussion was a major part of this track, sounding amazingly crisp and in
the 'real to life' authenticity analogue sound really delivers. It amuses to think this staggering in-built volume could be in anyway
thought to be less than another pressing. I am afraid financial gain by claiming UK Beatles labels, covers and the one I find the
most apalling of all, the sound itself, will long continue to be used to entice collectors. I know my records will perform exactly
as it 'says on the tin,' because I am not influenced or swayed by stamped digits, when I find I have bought a record with inferior
or substandard sound reproduction, unless a major rarity, which few Beatles LP's are, I am fully prepared to accept it can never
be re-sold, regardless of the visual appearance. The superb vocals ring out in perfectly defined audio, with the piano played by
Paul pushed way up in the mix. This is indeed George Martin's mono mix being heard and enjoyed in all it's glory, this incredible
opening track has a very strong r&b rhythm, the "beep beep" backing vocals are stunningly clear, a wonderful pressing like this
is not about volume alone, it places listeners in No.2 Studio, Abbey Road in 1965. In close up detail you can hear every single
individual part of this song, or you can just let a colossal impact submerge you in the audio magic of The Beatles, I enjoy a bit of
both! The ending fades into a totally silent gap, no crackles or static,I always include any natural static but there's nothing and
I am straining my ears to check because this is one of those deeply tracks starting. Miraculously it means John's single acoustic
guitar intro to his beautiful "Norwegian Wood", is heard in superbly clean and clear sound. There simply is no actual static or
surface/needle sound, George Harrison's sitar is in pristine audio and John Lennon's incredible vocal has a real cutting edge to
it, add the powerful mono mix into the equation and this wondeful melody is just staggering to hear! If anyone reading this has
ever tried to play a record for sound grading, they will understand the strange paradox of hearing such amazing sounding music,
yet trying to ignore magnificent audio, instead straining your ears for the slightest hint....a record is producing such fantastic
sound quality. I'm used to but it does seem quite bizzare on "Norwegian Wood" while this is plays with sheer audio perfection!
When a record lacks the common noise or irritations and has such astounding sound as this stunning record, I get to thoroughly
enjoy my most loved Beatles songs. A major reason for being so objective and obsessed with finding perfection on original vinyl,
the final note of the sitar fades away naturally into near enough silent grooves, before Paul's outstanding "You Won't See Me"
begins with an ultra clean intro. I describe exactly what I am hearing and this happens to be an amazing record, another superb
track in maximum sound quality, the backing harmonised "la-la-la-la" after the lines in the verses are as crystal clear as Paul's
brilliant lead vocals are. As well as standard guitars, the instruments include a piano and a Hammond organ, on worn out vinyl,
they become the victims of deteriorating sound. Not here! They are heard with their original full strength signals, still with the
natural edge undulled from heavy plays. The fade-out is perfectly clear of any needle sound so another smooth as silk gap gives
a wonderfully clean intro to the sublime "Nowhere Man", as I said, this is some record! A stunning and deeply beautiful acapella
or vocals only intro, and from the first seconds to the last, this has just awesome sound, mega sharp definition on the vocals for
this song is the ultimate way to hear it, without one second of any static or surface sound. A very emphatic powerful mono mix
tends to magnify one of, if not the John Lennon's greatest ever melodic vocal performances. John had introduced his personal
experiences into songs, giving him additional inspiration for his writing beautiful melodies and challenging lyrics. I am trying
to write an informative but concise description with sound quality the priority, or I indulge my fanatical love of discussing the
recording sessions and out-takes etc. So far so good, I cannot avoid the superlatives for such a famtastic record, the backing
harmonies are just breathtaking! Complete silence in the gap also waits for the intro to the first of the two great songs George
Harrison contributed, "Think For Yourself ". Once again heard with the same stunning audio sharpness, with George's 'fuzzed'
lead guitar in the clearest and cleanest audio, if you listen closely there's a very clever piece of percussion, just a little detail
now and again is impossible to avoid. After the verses, a shuffling drum part is closely followed by four beats on a tambourine.
This record really is That Sharp! The mono sound on an unworn 1965 pressing is sensational! Absolutely silent grooves run
into a perfectly clean intro to "The Word", one of the last songs written as time was running out, these are very mature lyrics,
not that far from the 1967 message of, "All You Need Is Love", the sheer clarity on the George Martin played harmonium is a
the ideal indication of how capable this1965 record is of such immaculate sound reproduction. Their vocals are astonishingly
projected in the mono mix, reinforcing how these music signals are the equivilent of a just pressed record. Please bear in mind
how every second of this first side has been as perfect as you could wish to hear as we approach the last track. It requires such
a stunning record to validate previously made comments about static /surface on the same track of every pressing ever made.
"Think For Yourself" fades into a near silent/silent gap, a single acoustic guitar intro to Paul's very atmospheric "Michelle" is
exceptionally clear but instantly I hear the same low level static there in 1965. There is in fact very little surface sound or as
static found on "Michelle", but I insist on including the most minor surface sound, while stressing how it is minor and background
as I have found on every original/first pressing, it varies in degree and this is really minimal. Eveything musically is in the same
stunning audio sharpness, I am trying to keep a distance from the term, 'first pressing' and it such a shame we have a contorted
view of an otherwise uncomplicated Beatles pressing. Static or not, a great sounding "Michelle", now to try and keep Side 2 down
to the same reasonably minimal amount of text after my extended headings!

Actually, isn't this too pristine/new?

I'm not doubting it's authenticity, more that half the interest in objects like this is the history of the item, not just the grooves themselves.

i might start buying lots of 78s on ebay and keeping some/selling the rest-- yes or no?

ian, Thursday, 25 March 2010 04:14 (fourteen years ago) link

hey, i met a guy who used to be a part of the whole scary big time 78 collector buyer/seller crowd. he sold his entire collection. i could have listened to him talk about the 78 world forever.

78 selling can be a slog, i'll bet. you could make more money if you took a crash course in collectable classical vinyl. that stuff is still everywhere.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HANGING-CHAIR-Top-Quality-at-a-DISCOUNTED-Price_W0QQitemZ170467021510QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Home_Garden_GardenFurnitureR2_SM?hash=item27b0a052c6#ht_1639wt_1165

There have been malicious rumours that I sell stolen goods.

To protect my good name and reputation, I have documented below how and where I obtained the hanging chairs that I'm selling today.

Until January 2010 I had worked for one of Englands largest hammock makers for over 30 years.

Due to a misunderstanding at the 2009 xmas party I lost my job.

My boss's attractive 19 year old daughter having had too much to drink felt slightly unwell. So to protect her reputation I suggested that she should come with me to one of the upstairs offices to sober up.

Unfortunately while in the office she brought up most of the alcohol she had drunk and soiled her blouse and skirt in the process.

Not wanting her to get into trouble with her dad I suggested that she should quickly remove the soiled garments and said I would clean them in the washroom for her.

While removing her skirt, she slipped and fell over one of the desks. I immediately learnt over her to help her up.

At which point her father (My Boss) came into the office and got totally the wrong impression and sacked me on the spot.

About a month later, I was tidying up my bedside drawer when I found some keys to the warehouse that I had forgotten to return. So later that night (about 3am) I decided to return them.

When I got to the warehouse, I thought I'd better check if they were the correct keys (They were).

In the warehouse there were 100's of hanging chairs waiting for despatch to customers. Purely as a prank I thought I would hide them.

I hid them in my garden shed.

Now I want to return them, but I can't. My ex boss wouldn't believe it was just a prank. I haven't forgotten how he over reacted at the xmas party.

Now I'm forced to sell the bloody things on ebay.

its sad when i see records that i sell for a buck or two in the store - and that sit there in the store for months - selling for 10 or 20 bucks on ebay. it's kinda why people pack in the store idea and just sell online. but whatever. but seriously, if you can get money for brian cadd or beans records more power to you. looking at the stuff that guy sells is like looking into my brain. i cringe at the idea of starting stuff at 99 cents. i really do. the thought of sending a dollar record to hong kong...yeesh, i would have to have an employee. you know? but it does work. that guy sells 98% of his stuff. and he averages like ten bucks. if i started all that stuff at five bucks i would only sell half of it.

and its funny cuz i don't know the seller - i rarely remember ebay handles - but i was watching one of his records for the last five days.

i actually only put it up cuz it was sealed. and by now i realize that i can make money putting up all kinds of things if they are sealed. plus, okay, fine, i do realize that nazi stuff sells. but not always to nazis, you know? not everyone has nefarious purposes for such things. having said that, i have a pretty cool original 1939 nazi day planner that i got in a box of books from my brother and i don't know what to do with it. kinda cool. original nazi pencil included! i ended up with a horrible doctor dirty john valby record and i actually did throw it in the trash. didn't even want to sell it for a dollar. cuz he had some super funny "n-word" song on it.

i'm reminded of those old dudes at flea markets with the signs that say *ask to see our rare WWII memorabilia* and you just know that its a couple of old nazi daggers and flags and helmets that the dude got from his grandpappy and that they are priced so high that nobody will ever buy them cuz the guy can't bear to part with them. in fact, just went to a grandpappy junk shop in new hampshire and it was filled with horrible garbage and in one corner was a glass cabinet filled with artlessly arranged nazibilia all with decades-old index cards next to each item with crab-scrawled descriptions written on each card. probably been there since the korean war. good idea for an art-photo assignment. take pictures of old dude nazi displays around the country. i'm sure just one gun show would fill you with awe and dread.

Mark G, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 07:54 (fourteen years ago) link

pet peeve: people who wait until the auction is over, then see you have new listings, then ask you if they can wait to pay until they get a chance to bid on the next round. fuck that. here is my somewhat snippy reply:

I need payment for this item within five days of the auction ending, as explained in the item description. I list CDs every week and I can not wait for you to decide that you want to bid on new ones every time. IF you make your payment for this item (with full postage amount) and then decide you want me to hold the item while you bid on additional ones, that's fine. In that case, additional CDs would $2 apiece for combined shipping as I already mentioned in my answer to your last question. But please be aware that shipping prices jump drastically after around 1.75 kilos (4 pounds).

sleeve, Saturday, 21 August 2010 13:57 (fourteen years ago) link

haha totally did not mean to capitalize that "if" there.

anyway, I guess I should put something in my boilerplate text about this, maybe a 2-week maximum for holding items. they guy paid me right away, but I'd rather send stuff ASAP than wait for some indefinite period until a person tires of bidding on my items.

sleeve, Saturday, 21 August 2010 19:40 (fourteen years ago) link

i hate it too, but i understsand the impulse. especially if i'm selling a bunch of stuff in the same genre. that's usually when that happens to me. luckily, i'm so lazy that it usually takes me a couple weeks to list another batch of records.

from a chuck norris movie.."Shortly after, Chuck gets a lead on an evil Nazi warehouse. I'm sure there was some reason given as to how he found it, but I don't really remember or care. Trust me, menial plot details don't matter when you're watching Top Dog. Later that night, with no search warrant in hand, Chuck breaks into the warehouse and takes Reno along. Backup officers wait outside. It is while inside the warehouse that Chuck and Reno make their breakthrough discovery- the Nazi Day-Planner! Lying in a random desk in the warehouse, is a guide showing pictures of where the Nazis are going to strike next. As Chuck and Reno try and sneak out though, they get caught by the Nazis. I guess the Nazis stay up all night in their Nazi warehouse, talking about how much they hate minorities. Surrounded by bad guys, Chuck only has one choice. He gets out the Nazi Day-Planner, gives it to Reno, and tells him to run. He really doesn't even do it that quickly. The flunkies however, are completely dumbfounded by this as they watch Reno run away. It's not until the Nazi Ringleader tells them to 'get that dog!' that a couple of them run after Reno and the rest fight Chuck."

ugh i sold a record for $66 bucks and the buyer who had of course a rating of only (1) closed their ebay account two days later before paying for it. i hate assholes like that.

i'm always thankful when someone pays within a few minutes of the auction ending, but every time i put a few records up i end up waiting for that last person to pay, and they end up doing it five days later.

people keep telling me that i should sell on discogs. should i move on over from ebay? i keep hearing about how people regularly pay really high prices on there for stuff. and that you can move things quicker.

if you've got a rare rap or disco record, discogs is a good way to go tbh. we've put stuff up for $100 or $200 and it'll sell overnight sometimes.

my roommate got me into chet & also told me this wonderful story about him. apparently some 20th c virtuoso classical guitarist, on his deathbed, was asked who the greatest living guitarist was and he answered "chester atkins"

YOU ARE BUYING THE ITEM(s) SHOWN & DESCRIBED IN THE HEADING: HERE WE HAVE THE MOODY BLUE, BLUE VINYL LP. WHAT A COLLECTOR'S ITEM!! THE DISC IS IN 4 PIECES. BUT THIS SHOULDN'T DETER A TRUE ELVIS COLLECTOR. THE PEOPLE AT THE GOODWILL STORE, WHERE I BOUGHT IT, TOLD ME IT WOULD PLAY JUST FINE, IF IT WAS GLUED BACK TOGETHER. I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO GLUE RECORDS, SO AM PROVIDING A TUBE OF GLUE, FOR THE LUCKY PERSON WHO BUYS IT. I AM NOT CHARGING ANYTHING FOR THE GLUE! THIS IS ONE OF SEVERAL LP's & MUSIC RELATED ITEMS, I AM OFFERING. SOME, ARE ONE-OF-A-KIND. I USE THE STANDARD GRADING SYSTEM & THESE ABBREVIATIONS: WOC = WRITING ON COVER, DOC = DATE ON COVER, NOC = NAME ON COVER, BTM = BOTTOM, {ST} = STEREO, TP = TOP, BB = DRILL HOLE, CC = CUT CORNER, SPL = SPLIT, TP = TAPED, BC = BACK COVER, WR = WEAR, LBL = LABEL, RI = REISSUE, SM = SEAM. COVER IS GRADED FIRST, THEN THE RECORD. THESE LP's ARE DATED, GRADED & DESCRIBED ACCURATELY. THE LABELS ARE SHOWN IN THE PICS. READ THE INFO CAREFULLY & YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED WHEN YOU RECEIVE THE ITEM. FACT: IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS, THERE HAS BEEN A DRASTIC DECLINE, IN LP'S BEING OFFERED ON EBAY {FROM 3 MILLION TO 2 MILLION}. I DO NOT KNOW IF EVERYONE WORE OUT THEIR "RELIST" BUTTONS, OR THERE ARE FEWER, WINTER GARAGE & RUMMAGE SALES, WHERE SOME VENDORS SCROUNGE FOR THEIR STOCK. PROBABLY BOTH. I STILL HAVE PLENTY TO SELL, EVEN THO THEY ARE NOT ALL "SUPER RARE" - MEGA RARE" - "AWESOME" - "COOL" -"GROOVY" - "GORGEOUS" - "FANTASTIC" - "STUNNING" - "STUPENDOUS" - "INCREDIBLE" - "STONE MINT" - "VG+++" - "STILL IN SHRINK" - "PERSONAL COLLECTION" - "ESTATE FIND {RUMMAGE SALE}" & ETC. I'LL SPARE YOU THE BS! I DON'T USE EBAY'S MOST OVERUSED WORD, "RARE", VERY OFTEN. BUT WHEN I DO -- IT IS!! OVER 90 % OF THE LP's, NOW BEING OFFERED, ARE AT "SET SALE", MOSTLY, STOCKPILED & OVERRUNNING VENDORS STORES. THIS MAKES THINGS VERY SIMPLE. JUST GO & COMPARE OTHER GRADES, SELECTIONS & PRICES. THEN COME BACK HERE, & BUY SOME THESE! THIS ITEM WILL BE SHIPPED IN A SLEEVE, NOT CRAMMED IN A USED WALMART BAG & SHIPPED IN A USED PIZZA BOX. ALAS!! THE PO HAS RAISED THEIR RATES AGAIN -- WITHOUT EVEN ASKING EBAY. THEY COULD GET THEIR "PRIVILEGES" SUSPENDED. EVEN MORE DRASTIC, EBAY MIGHT START IT'S OWN POST OFFICE. IT ALREADY HAS IT'S OWN CREDIT CARD COMPANY {PAY PAL} & IT'S OWN BANK {WEBBANK = 19.99 % ANNUAL INTEREST RATE}. THEN YOU WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO BUY OR SELL ANYTHING, UNLESS YOU USED EBAY'S SHIPPING. YEP, THERE GOES A FEW MILLION MORE, EBAY USERS. I NOW HAVE TO SHIP MEDIA MAIL", AS EBAY ONLY LETS ME CHARGE $4 FOR SHIPPING, EVEN THO I NOW PAY FROM $6.50 - $9.50 {1st CLASS} TO SEND ONE LP. THEY EVEN URGE & "STRONGLY RECOMMEND", THAT I OFFER FREE SHIPPING. EVER WONDER WHY AN ITEM IS LISTED FOR $20, WITH "FREE SHIPPING", YET THE SAME IDENTICAL ITEM IS LISTED SEVERAL PLACES ELSEWHERE, FOR $10, PLUS $5 SHIPPING?? THIS COMMON SELLING PRACTICE IS DONE , WITH EBAY'S BLESSING, AS THEY GET A COMMISSION FROM THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF THE SALE, INSTEAD OF JUST THE PRICE OF THE ITEM, WITH SHIPPING ADDED. WISE UP!! I HAVE ONE SHIPPING PRICE - $4 PER ORDER{s}, WHETHER YOU BUY ONE, OR MORE {SAME DAY}. OVERSEAS BUYERS: YOU ARE GETTING BUTCHERED! IGNORE THE STANDARD SHIPPING RATES. I CAN SEND 12-16 LP's TO EUROPE, FOR $46. I WILL SEND YOU A REASONABLE QUOTE. YOU WILL BE VERY SATISFIED. THANKS FOR LOOKING.

I got sniped in real life! I almost shanked the fool. I'd been shopping for a few hours in 2 stores and was kinda tired. I didn't really feel like digging anymore, but knew this store had good 12" selection and went in looking for only one record. I ask the guy where I might find it (it's could be filed in a bunch of places). I tell him it's Bits and Pieces. Cover of a Yarborough & Peoples track on Mango. He points me to the Mango/Island section but there's a guy in front of it. I wait a second and it's not there. 1 second later and the guy that worked there told me the guy was listening to it. He probably heard me asking about it and he bought it. I was so pissed. it's not like a super rare record. It turns up all the time online but always in Europe and i dont wanna pay for shipping. Oh well, he'll get his.

head-scratching lol-worthy reply from a japanese seller (i asked about an lp's condition):

"OK!!Although condition is very good, it does not become precocious. The check of the noise is not carried out, either. However, LP gas in Japan thinks that condition is good comparatively. I am looking forward to being able to deal with you in the future. I would appreciate your favor. Thank you."

i was relieved to hear it doesn't become precocious (as you can imagine), so i placed a low bid, and won.

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 22:44 (twelve years ago) link

Paid already - now I've got the fear about all this Paypal dodginess that's been going around, is there I should watch out for? I'm pretty sure he's legit, but I've never traded in anything like this amount on Ebay before. What's all this Chargeback stuff?

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:10 (twelve years ago) link

some things are out of your hands. did you make him pay for insurance and all that? you should be covered.

scott seward, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

I still haven't gotten all of the money for my last ebay sale, which was Jan 14, even though I've received positive feedback on all items except one. Tomorrow is the date when I'm supposed to have the money. I don't even want to sell on ebay anymore. But you have a higher rating than I do and with your higher number of sales maybe you won't have the problems I did.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:14 (twelve years ago) link

Well, I put that I would ship with insurance, but he paid the max amount Ebay would let me put in, not the amount I put in the listing

But really at that price, I'm not gonna quibble, it's going out with insurance

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:16 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah I've been on Ebay since '99 if they have any problems with me I'll be slightly annoyed

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:17 (twelve years ago) link

with something like that, i, myself, would spend the extra money and use Fedex and have it sent as fast as possible and hand-delivered.

scott seward, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:18 (twelve years ago) link

also for the total sales I had ebay charged me $24 and paypal charged me $11. I know that's not a lot, but still it pissed me off. it's like almost 20% of what all of my records sold for. Granted I'm not a record seller and maybe this is usual, that everyone takes their cut.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:20 (twelve years ago) link

I'm going with special delivery signed for with insurance, that should do it? I could look into a courier but dunno if that's much of an improvement?

OK I'll spend some time tomorrow looking into any pitfalls of special delivery international, must admit I'm sighing some relief it's not going to Italy.

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:21 (twelve years ago) link

btw what's a good price to pay for Bob Seger's Brand New Morning? Is it worth paying more than $20? I heard it was his folkie record?

Also used it to sell off some excess records I'd somehow acquired over the years. That's how I found out my Bobb Trimble album I'd never listened to was worth $200+. Should have held onto it - it trades for nearly $1,000 nowadays....

roll the dice. start it at ten bucks. live dangerously.

scott seward, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:14 (twelve years ago) link

i never have understood setting a reserve on records, it usually discourages me from bidding. i prefer the seller to start the record at either the base amount they want for it or starting cheap and letting people decide what they want.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:22 (twelve years ago) link

i kind of agree on no reserve.

skot: don't want to start it low because, tbh, it's only "worth selling" if it's gonna help us significantly pay off our vet bills/other debts. so i don't want to list it at $10 and have it only sell for $200, even though that's a lot of money, ya know

man. I don't have anything with a Mike Rep drawn cover, but I *do* have an original of GBV's 'Sandbox'. On whatever label they released it on. I bought it direct from Scat ... after the either the 'Grand Hour' EP or the 'Vampire' LP came out, Scat started selling a bunch of GBV backstock early LPs through their mail order distro catalog. I loved the 'Grand Hour' thing so much that I punted on a copy of 'Sandbox.' Didn't buy the others because I was a broke youngin'. Later I got the 6lp box set, so ever since I've had two Sandboxes.

STUNNING MASTER TAPE SOUND ON SIDE ONE! And side two, at A+ to A++, is excellent in its own right. This is an incredible recording, a member of our Top 100, but it takes a copy like this to make it come to life.

I confess to not ever having taken this album seriously, dismissing it as a commercial collection of pop hits with as much depth as the L.A. river, but I was wrong wrong WRONG. This is a great album on the right LP, not the compressed piece of grainy cardboard pop we're used to. The typical pressing barely hints at the tremendous energy and top-quality musicianship that characterizes practically every track on this wonderful record.

However I didn't factor in that I then risked a Comic Book Guy type of person inspecting the record on the spot and critiquing my grading to my face.

Was a bit nerve-racking but after he declared it "a little dustier than I'd like ... not exactly mint" (I didn't grade it mint) we parted ways on good terms. Adios good sir.

dmr, Friday, 6 July 2012 18:10 (twelve years ago) link

lol, yeah, people are weird man... glad things worked out okay. it's weird, ppl who are into spending hundreds on records but not understanding grading etc.

one dis leads to another (ian), Friday, 6 July 2012 18:11 (twelve years ago) link

I am not super confident in my grading tbh

dmr, Friday, 6 July 2012 18:16 (twelve years ago) link

think I described this record fine though

dmr, Friday, 6 July 2012 18:17 (twelve years ago) link

i have a couple of good classical records ending today that are going up nicely. very curious what they will end up at. then i panic about my grading. i never put near mint on anything. that helps. unless it was sealed and i opened it. with rock stuff i will do near mint occasionally.

scott seward, Friday, 6 July 2012 18:19 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I did put NM on this and probably maybe should have put VG+ which is what I usually put on almost everything

but it's about as clean a record as I'm gonna ever have up on ebay

kicking myself yet again for not buying all of those from RRR back in the 90's when he was selling them for dirt cheap.

sleeve, Saturday, 7 July 2012 00:16 (twelve years ago) link

eBay has been good to me lately, picked up a Steve Roden 10" that I haven't ever seen for sale anywhere, it was $10. currently bidding on the only Thinking Fellers vinyl I don't have (Wormed By Leonard, I have the cassette tho). the recession has really improved (i.e. lowered) the prices on a lot of stuff I collect.

big fat meh re: ebay. so so so sick of badly-graded records. much higher success rate w/ Discogs.

aren't you the only person who buys 78s online here?

though good information for future generations and random goggle jockeys.

i was happy to sell russian records to my friend yuri instead of trying to sell them online. not 78s though. though i have sold him 78s. if academy ever gets any russian 78s email him. he's always looking.

scott seward, Sunday, 8 July 2012 02:29 (twelve years ago) link

he even bought some of my folk 78s cuz they were on labels owned by russian immigrants.

nobody wants my country dance/folk dance 78s. :(

they're in such nice shape. nice henry ford label records. all kinds. new england square dance records. contra dance records. i have so many of them. thought some of the folk dance people around here would dig them, but nope.

scott seward, Sunday, 8 July 2012 02:31 (twelve years ago) link

should have put the henry ford ones online a year ago. i sell them for three dollars in my store. they are never on ebay. ever. his own custom label folk dance orchestra stuff. i try to give the locals a chance...

think i sold a couple of them...

scott seward, Sunday, 8 July 2012 02:48 (twelve years ago) link

even i can't hang with square dance music :( the occasional fiddle tune with calls is okay but legit square dance music... tough listen for me.

It's looking like europe and japan are getting all of the records I'm selling. I'm awful at figuring out international shipping.

JacobSanders, Sunday, 14 October 2012 02:55 (twelve years ago) link

it's gotten pretty expensive. send first class intl not prioty, unless they want tracking, cuz sometimes intl packages are hard to track.
the japanese have been buying all our good records for so long. they are so refined in their taste. 10 yrs head of the curve

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Sunday, 14 October 2012 04:36 (twelve years ago) link

definitely get tracking. and insurance. you gotta cover your butt. i charge 15 bucks flat worldwide but if a record sells for over a hundred i pay the extra shipping to send it priority with tracking. which is like an extra 15 bucks usually. i don't mind paying the extra money cuz the last thing you want is have someone say they didn't get a $$$ record. because there is nothing you can do about it and ebay/paypal will just take the price of the record from you. you have no rights in that case.

scott seward, Sunday, 14 October 2012 16:16 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, i mean, if yer sending a hundred dollar record it makes sense. i am not abt to pay $15 extra for something that only sold for $25 tho. ya know whattamean? there goes all the profit.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Sunday, 14 October 2012 17:06 (twelve years ago) link

no i never do that. but i've learned the hard way to send pricy shit securely.

scott seward, Sunday, 14 October 2012 18:50 (twelve years ago) link

ebay does not do anything to help the seller. My dad has been stuck a couple of times selling internationally, but fortunately not for anything too expensive.

los blue jeans, Monday, 15 October 2012 00:42 (twelve years ago) link

you can always ask someone: look would you pay an extra 15 bucks or whatever to make sure it gets there? some will. if they don't want to, then you'd better do it yourself. discogs is good for that. you can negotiate with people and ask them what they want to pay for before they send you money.

oh jeez. i won an auction for a Roxy Music 2lp bootleg at a good price (no other bidders). the guy had shipping listed at $8.75 or something. i emailed to see if the standard $4 media mail was an option, and he wrote back that he's not familiar w/ that but he'd check at the post office. a week went by, and he then replied that the post office told him they cannot accept anything w/ an LP's dimensions as media mail... so i gave up, and just went w/ the $8.75 shipping (lp was at a good price). three weeks pass, nothing. i write to the guy, and he said he was waiting on record mailers, but since i wrote, he figured i must be in a hurry (!) so he packaged it in a different box. i feared the worst. lp arrived last week, actually packaged well (it better be, for $8.75) BUT ONE OF THE LPS HAS A BIG SCRATCH THAT SKIPS.

what are your guys' policies on shipping with insurance?

always? sometimes (monetary value/international destination)? never?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 7 January 2013 17:53 (twelve years ago) link

Or better yet, does USPS raise an eyebrow if you declare an item for $10 on the customs form and then insure it for $50-100?

Here's the story:
I've got a guy in Germany claiming he hasn't received a $75 45rpm I shipped from USA 4 weeks ago. He has a 1000+ ebay rating. I sent it uninsured.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 7 January 2013 22:17 (twelve years ago) link

ask him to wait a few more days.
i had a guy in spain email me because he hadn't received his records in a month and they turned up the same day he wrote to me. this seems to happen often/

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 00:12 (twelve years ago) link

Thank you for the reply Ian.

But back to the first question, now I'm paranoid and feel like I should be insuring every overseas package, what's your guideline?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 00:24 (twelve years ago) link

USPS normally doesn't care what the custom form says so "Vinyl record" and "$10" should be fine but someone tell me if I'm wrong when the insurance variable is in the equation?

Otherwise don't attribute any issue to custom form details- I've only heard of issues when it goes to Brazil, personally.

Evan, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 14:32 (twelve years ago) link

there is no postal law that says you can't insure a ten dollar package for more than ten dollars.

scott seward, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 16:48 (twelve years ago) link

Do you always use insurance Scott?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 17:29 (twelve years ago) link

Is that a threat?

Seriously though I feel like you can write anything you want on those customs forms insurance aside.

Evan, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 04:48 (twelve years ago) link

i usually only insure stuff if its pricy. or if someone asks for it. but hardly anyone ever asks for it. if i'm sending something that is $100+ to somewhere in the states i will pay for priority shipping + delivery confirmation or signature confirmation. that's usually good enough. if its to europe and over a hundred bucks i'll sometimes pay for faster/trackable shipping and insurance. would never send anything $$$ overseas without tracking/insurance after a couple of bad experiences years ago.

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 12:52 (twelve years ago) link

is it appropriate during the paypal dispute process to tell someone that, while they seem to be completely truant about mailing records, you really like their new record a lot?

Or better yet, does USPS raise an eyebrow if you declare an item for $10 on the customs form and then insure it for $50-100?

Here's the story:
I've got a guy in Germany claiming he hasn't received a $75 45rpm I shipped from USA 4 weeks ago. He has a 1000+ ebay rating. I sent it uninsured.

― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, January 7, 2013 2:17 PM (3 weeks ago)

He got it today, 2 months to the day after I shipped it. Major relief on my end.

imo it's weird to have the price sticker still on the LP. weirder to be attempting to flip it for a mere $5 profit.

This stuff is so silly:

" VOYAGER " by SPACE NEEDLE

WOW!!! In researching this little gem on the net, I was pleasantly surprised that it is a true RARITY that seems to be on everyone's TOP MOST WANTED LP LIST. This album is a LOST TREASURE in the genre of INDIE LO-FI POP, EXPERIMENTAL, PROG, POST-PUNK. I repeatedly found nothing but PRAISE for this home-recording effort by the duo of JUD EHRBAR (vocals, keyboards, drums) & JEFF GATLAND (guitar), a product of NYC's ZERO HOUR label with connections to SCARCE & VARNALINE.

Are all of the words in caps from the second sentence down entered madlibs style into some ebay-vinyl-seller program that processes this thing at the end?

Evan, Saturday, 31 August 2013 15:14 (eleven years ago) link

This kind of thing really angers me. At best this record would sell in an auction for maybe $10.00 with the top repaired by tape and it says more seams are split. It's a lounge record from New Orleans, no fuzz or psych moves. He says soul/funk, but come on. Frankie Brent had a few 45's on different major labels in the 60's doing R&B/popcorn that are mildly collectable. In the 70's played at hotels and bars, still playing 60's songs in a cheesy lounge style. I mean even one of the most sought after lounge records by JC Ann Trio only sells for $250 at best. The weirdo Jerry Solomon has sold for $1000, but those have been hyped by Paul Major since the 80's. What is this guy thinking. Does he even know his records?

what's up with people emailing you before an auction is even over to send you a lowball offer? like, just wait to see if it doesn't sell before offering me below my opening bid, dude.

Evan, Friday, 6 September 2013 14:40 (eleven years ago) link

Had a dude try this one last night with <6 hours to go:

"I wish to withdraw my bid please.. I just won a purchase for a similar item. Hope you understand, thank you."

His bid was eclipsed fortunately, but also thankfully eBay now has safeguards/seller protection to prevent shit like this from getting out of hand.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 6 September 2013 15:38 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, that's ridic -- don't bid on two copies of the same record until you know you've lost one. or if you're prepared to buy two copies.

ian, Friday, 6 September 2013 20:22 (eleven years ago) link

(ebay ppl have it easy in that regard. there are two copise of the skillet lickers 'liberty' 78rpm in two different mail auctions right now -- and i want that record, cuz it's really great, but i'm not gonna bid on both copies cuz i don't want to own both copies.)

ian, Friday, 6 September 2013 21:12 (eleven years ago) link

I won this lounge record on Sept 1 and today on the 7th, I received a message : "There will be a slight delay for your record. I am out of stock of mailing LP supplies. I am searching for emergency supply and should have your record out Monday or Tuesday. Thanks for your patience and for bidding."

So interesting to think about how people have this kind of money to spend on a record. Other people save up that much to do major renovations or buy new cars.

Evan, Friday, 20 September 2013 04:53 (eleven years ago) link

wow did you read the public Q&A section at the bottom, it sounds like the seller didn't really realize what he had. someone offers $4,000 to end the auction early and he's like "hmm eBay won't let me change it to a Buy It Now, I will call them and see." and then other people chime in that it's worth way more than that. dude almost got hosed.

Evan, Friday, 20 September 2013 17:22 (eleven years ago) link

78s are the only game worth playin imo.

thing is, the dudes who are bidding on this, in the even of a win, can probably unload some other rarities to make up the cost, or at least a chunk of the cost.

this is why i only buy string band records, which tend to top out in the 7-800 zone. i rarely pay more than $20 for a 78.

ian, Friday, 20 September 2013 17:31 (eleven years ago) link

scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 17:01 (eleven years ago) link

I'm sure the winning bidder will AT LEAST inquire about how it's being shipped. At this price I imagine that kind of conversation eventually ends up a phone call and many emails. They likely have picked up on the fact that this guy may be pretty clueless...

Evan, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 18:28 (eleven years ago) link

i don't know clueless he is. yeah he was ready to take $4,000 but to be fair there is no standard to go by and $4,000 is gonna sound like a lot to someone. if i had found this in a box i would have known it was money but i never would have known how much money.

scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 19:16 (eleven years ago) link

yeah to be fair he did start the auction at 500 bucks not 5. and he's at least conscious enough about condition to say "no" to all the people who are like "you need to play it once and record it," it's right to leave that up to the buyer imo.

dmr, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 19:40 (eleven years ago) link

When someone offers me $4000 for something I'm not sure of the value of, I'd google it before accepting any offer.

nickn, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 20:00 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah it's a clueless thing for someone to just accept an offer like that seemingly right off the bat. Saying it's because you "live close to where the artist is from" is especially flimsy as the only reasoning at that price even if you're a collector.

Evan, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 20:34 (eleven years ago) link

if i have any beef with tefteller its just that he can get a hundred dollar buy it now price for something i'd be lucky to get 20 bucks for on ebay. cuzza his name. but hey that's not his fault. he's got the rep.

he's a bit crazzzzyy and definitely gets more money for some records than they're worth. also depends on the condition of course. 78 ppl are nuts about condition.. but less so with the post war stuff, i find.

caek, Thursday, 26 September 2013 19:38 (eleven years ago) link

scott, if you're right then good for him. i just have a hard time believing that a dude who has the collector bug so bad he's shelling out $40k on a single 78 for his personal collection is really bringing in enough to survive. i mean, conservatively, how much do you think dude spends on his own collection every year? a few hundred k? more? you gotta sell the shit out of some records and be finding some really killer deals to even cover the cost of your personal collection much less rent/mortgage/food/beer/etc.

moe handy, Thursday, 26 September 2013 19:44 (eleven years ago) link

Sometimes I just get pissed off trying to figure out how anyone affords anything.

Evan, Thursday, 26 September 2013 19:52 (eleven years ago) link

see, here's the thing though. big 78 collectors (people in their 50's and 60's and 70's) have most of what they need. they don't actually shell out tons of money every year on 78s. in a lot of cases the bulk of their collection was amassed decades ago and they got most of it for peanuts. when pat conte comes in my store i'm ecstatic when he finds stuff that he wants cuz he has almost everything that he wants. the stuff he buys now is just fun stuff that he's never heard. not big ticket things.

scott seward, Thursday, 26 September 2013 19:56 (eleven years ago) link

he's one of the few people in this country capable of giving someone $$$$$ for a decent pre-war collection. and he buys stuff like that every year. and when people want to sell collections like that they contact him. he does very well.

scott seward, Thursday, 26 September 2013 19:58 (eleven years ago) link

i did read an interview online where he said he mortgaged his house to buy a priceless collection of blues advertisement art. he uses the art to make calendars and t-shirts. he has a separate site for that. the interview is fun if you see it online.

Untt (La Lechera), Thursday, 26 September 2013 21:17 (eleven years ago) link

so ,with a record like that, once tefteller gets his hands on it, will he play/record it?

he'll probably play it occasionally with a modern stylus that won't damage the grooves. he noted on a facebook group i follow that he's going to have it remastered by Richard Nevins (of Yazoo Records) for inclusion with his next blues calendar/cd combo that he puts out each year. Nevins does a great job with his remastering, he really does. I went to his place once and hung out in his studio and it's really quite impressive. i was actually supposed to go hang out there with some guys TODAY but i had to start my new job instead.

So I've decided on about 50 records to sell on ebay. I've spent today recording clips of some of the xian yacht rock folk dogshit that maybe I can get money for. I've graded and written descriptions of half of them. This is grueling work. I don't see how people make a living doing this.Would having in the description: "Featuring in the private press coffee table book 'Enjoy The Experience' be in bad form? I don't know how else to sell some of this christian crap.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 20:39 (eleven years ago) link

Would having in the description: "Featuring in the private press coffee table book 'Enjoy The Experience' be in bad form?

no way, that's just straight up marketing. nothing wrong with it imo. (assuming the records you're talking about are actually in the book!)

dmr, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 20:45 (eleven years ago) link

yeah I have a bunch of bad christian records with cool covers that are in the book. I guess the music has a "real people" vibe but it's unlistenable to my ears.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 20:48 (eleven years ago) link

Tell you, I've decamped to Discogs' selling interface..

They have pics and tracklistings of most everything, whichever originating country the LP was pressed in, etc.

When you select the album to 'sell', they ask the condition and suggest a price for you.

Basically, how long it took to list one item on ebay (with pics and tracklisting), I could do 50 on Discogs.

For actual auctions of valuable stuff, i'd still use ebay though. But for 'buy-it-now', no.

Mark G, Friday, 25 October 2013 10:42 (eleven years ago) link

agreed.

there's pretty much only a couple reasons to sell on ebay instead of discogs:

1. there's no listing for the item on discogs
2. it's a super rare item that hasn't had its "value" sorted already so you really need to auction it on ebay for max price/exposure
3. you have a dedicated list of many titles in the same genre/realm

moe handy, Friday, 25 October 2013 20:42 (eleven years ago) link

re 3, potential buyers can click a category on your shop front and see all yr 'Christian Rock' eg on one page.

Mark G, Saturday, 26 October 2013 07:49 (eleven years ago) link

yeah it's a shame you can't do lots on discogs

Q: So both the cover and record are in excellent condition instead of the VG+ rating from Ebay? Oct-27-13
A: I use the word "excellent" as a descriptive term, not as a grade. I use the old Goldmine record grading, and there was no Excellent grade using Goldmine standards once upon a time. Excellent is an Ebay-derived grade. VG+ to me means very close to Near Mint. And something that is close to Near Mint is in excellent condition. Goldmine does consider Excellent to be comparable to VG+ now though: http://www.goldminemag.com/collector-resources/record-grading-101/2. I can't help but think of 78 rpm record grading when I see the grade E or E+ though. Anyway, by current Goldmine standards this record is either VG+ or Excellent. But I was not grading the record as excellent. Merely mentioning that it is in excellent shape. If you are uncomfortable with the word excellent in my description, feel free to change the word to "great" or "wonderful" in your head if it helps. Thanks for the question!

scott seward, Sunday, 27 October 2013 12:08 (eleven years ago) link

lol

ian, Monday, 28 October 2013 00:17 (eleven years ago) link

i actually had a guy really chew me out recently cuz a cover i graded as VG+ had a name written on the back. a small name. see, i don't know why, but i do consider ex to be seprarate from VG+. i dunno why. always have, even before i started collecting 78s.

i lost a lot of Pope's Arkansas Mountaineers 78s on ebay today. All three of their records in VG/VG+ condition - i.e. some wear, surface noise, maybe some distressed grooves. went for $92. i bid $91. they were at $35 til the last minute.

so, as a consolation, i am buying some french-canadian fiddle 78s from a friend of mine who lives up there. hurray.

ian, Monday, 28 October 2013 00:20 (eleven years ago) link

Do you guy have countries you do not ship to or accept bids from?

JacobSanders, Monday, 28 October 2013 19:03 (eleven years ago) link

i dont -- i havent had any bad experiences yet. i mention in my description that i "may require insurance/registration to some countries," but i havent had to exercise that yet.

69, Monday, 28 October 2013 19:05 (eleven years ago) link

i've had bad experiences shipping to italy and greece. i'll still do it, but i require insurance for any overseas order over $30 now.

ian, Monday, 28 October 2013 19:11 (eleven years ago) link

Recently I sold a guy in sweden a rare record and when filling out the customs form I put down $115 as the value of the record. It was sent priority with everything else. But when the guy went to pick up the record, he had to pay $52 for a custom's tax! I didn't know about this, and dude wasn't happy with me. He said to never put a value over $10 on a package because of this. Has anybody else experience anything like this?

JacobSanders, Monday, 28 October 2013 19:14 (eleven years ago) link

i've had people ask me to not put the real value on a package, but then if you send it with an insured value of $10 then yer fucked if something happens... it's a very tricky thing. not all countries have the same import duties of course, and i don't know what the standard is.

i just shipped a box of five records to germany and put the value as $120, which was the total before shipping. i wonder if the guy will be pissed off.

ian, Monday, 28 October 2013 19:17 (eleven years ago) link

I'm also conflicted about grading after reading Scott's post above. I was thinking of using EX since I don't want to use NM unless something is sealed and no dings ,shrink completely intact etc.. I've always though VG+ is a lesser grading than EX, has light scuffs, plays with little surface noise, cover has mild wear, but EX is closer to NM almost mint. But is this a made up grading?

JacobSanders, Monday, 28 October 2013 19:23 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah the customs stuff is weird. I've had ones where I put the real value but was asked to mark it as "gift" rather than "goods" but I'm sure every country is different on those rules.

dmr, Monday, 28 October 2013 20:06 (eleven years ago) link

He said to never put a value over $10 on a package because of this.

I guess if someone asked me to do this I would agree to it but tell them if the record gets lost they're SOL because of the insurance implications? Like, if they want to save money on customs then the burden's on them.

ian, Monday, 28 October 2013 20:35 (eleven years ago) link

i totally sell stuff that other people would list as near mint as vg+. but i don't care. i want people to be really happy when they get a record from me. and i feel like i'm covered that way. i do use the excellent grade sometimes when i have stuff that is pretty much unplayed/like new. i feel like near mint is almost a myth. i would have to listen to every record i sell very closely for me to call it near mint. i'd rather be safe than sorry. and i get repeat business as a result.

I should have bid a top price early on a Sun Kil Moon album I wanted. But that's only because it ended while I was away and disconnected from the internet.
Can't be bothered with bidding wars on the beach.

lol I wondered about that John Hartford cover as well.

Jacob, I am interested in the Augustus Pablo, my ILX email works if you wanna hit me up off-board.

I always bid late. I have no idea if there is any actual point in doing it, but that's what I do.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 8 November 2013 22:52 (eleven years ago) link

I never thought Lee Hazlewood & Ann Margret's 'The Cowboy & The Lady' would be the most watched record is my sale?? I haven't even listened to it, I guess I should?

JacobSanders, Monday, 11 November 2013 02:11 (eleven years ago) link

If you listen to that one you also have to listen to all the polka.

My sale ends starting tomorrow morning, I'm excited to see what happens. These are records from the last three years digging in Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Ohio, Louisiana, Maryland, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Texas. I actually had planned to sell 150, but I only ordered 50 record mailers. I don't think I could handle a sale larger than 50 yet.

It's looking my fellowminded japanese will be getting a lot of my records, anyone have tips on what I should charge for combined overseas shipping?

JacobSanders, Thursday, 14 November 2013 16:02 (eleven years ago) link

imo taking no profit on int'l shipping means $19 for 1st record + $3.50 per add'l

69, Thursday, 14 November 2013 18:17 (eleven years ago) link

Thanks, that's what I was thinking, I put 20 in my postings, so I can recover a little handling/mailers cost.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 14 November 2013 18:21 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, i think thats the smart way to go!

69, Thursday, 14 November 2013 18:28 (eleven years ago) link

HA! No one wanted the kiddie Oldfield's the Sallyangie, have to say that was one of the most disappointing records I have ever bought.

I suck at selling on ebay, all of the decent private xian records undersold, and the stuff I almost didn't sell did ok. Maybe the market for christian records has busted? I'm planning on putting up 45's, maybe those will do better.

JacobSanders, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:40 (eleven years ago) link

re-list stuff that didn't sell.

scott seward, Friday, 15 November 2013 17:08 (eleven years ago) link

also, don't hesitate to start things higher. at least make it worth your while. start everything at 9.95 at least. unless you are a constant seller who always has hundreds of records going in auctions it doesn't really pay to start things too low. unless you want to sell lots of records for 5 bucks. sometimes slightly higher prices for harder to find records are actually enticing to people. not TOO high though. unless you have something that EVERYONE wants. then it doesn't matter.

scott seward, Friday, 15 November 2013 17:14 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, it's whatever two people are prepared to pay for it..

Unless you price it high but fairly..

"Why would anyone go through the process of printing a boot cover, pay the extra expense to emboss the cover, only to put legit records inside — doesn’t make sense. Plus, we’d have seen them before. It must be real."
