the thing i want to know about the whole "minimal synth" retro thing is do the people who buy it and listen to it already own every great dollar 80's synth album out there? cuz there are a lot of them. i've been listening to the stuff since, you know, 1980, and i haven't even heard ten percent of the good 80's stuff. which is why i guess i'm never big on retro movements. same with the electroclash thing whenever that was. why would i buy an ADULT 12 inch for ten bucks when i can buy a great 80's album for a quarter? if the new stuff were way better than i could understand, i guess. maybe it is. i haven't heard much of it.

Anyone ever see Karin Krog records out there? I have some amazing greatest hits or something cd from college and just looked on eBay and the albums go for like $250. Are there reissues?

Scott, I buy tons of cheap 80s records, but the thing with this genre is that most of it wasn't made in the states. So, even though most of the new stuff isn't as good, I sometimes like a new $10 lp vs a Belgian $100 7".

Luckily there was a cool local sf scene, so I'm able to find Ralph records and others for reasonable prices.

hey skot (and everyone else too), i love felt's CRUMBLING THE ANTISEPTIC BEAUTY. i have and like (maybe not quite love) THE PICTORIAL JACKSON REVIEW. i can maybe see myself getting it all eventually, but i wanna know where to focus my attention first. i want something that has the psych-y jangle guitar timbre of "evergreen dazed," and maybe like on the cryptic side? happy with 7"s or 12"s or LP's, whatever...

also i guess it appeals to me at least a little to hear the early stuff first, but that's not a huge concern.

judging by popsike those prices aren't too bad, ballad seems to bring in decent wedge when mint

if you're after the tracks as opposed to the artifacts, all of 'final resting' is on creation soup, and the b-sides of crystal spires are on bubblegum perfume.. the other two have trax that haven't been reished as far as i know

i remember finding space blues for a dollar somewhere in the early 90's and i didn't even know it existed. most of my vinyl i got in the 80's when i took trips to NYC. tower had a good import section back then.

I don't know those last two, but the Candlestickmaker is a good record.

Mike Fiems I Would Dream is the other release on Vermillion records with Vernon Wray producing. It sells for $$ and I haven't seen a copy for sale in awhile. It's one of the records I'm willing to go broke on.

that's definitely a fair price. i've always had a soft spot for that one. i never see it for sale.

but that initial list, minus perhaps the wake lp, is up there with the best of sarah stuff imo. needs more sweetest ache though 8)

there's one on gemm for 163, which is actually really high. Wait around and I'm sure you'll see one appear on ebay and you'll pay maybe $60 or $70. If I had a double I'd sell you one but I can't part with mine.

Last time it was on ebay was October... but on the bright side it completed at 30! So hopefully I won't have to pay too high if I come across one.

Damn 30 is a great price! Although a record as good as this one, I didn't mind paying collectors price. I tried to bid on a copy almost sealed and lost by a few dollars at 50 so the next time it came up I made sure to sell my max bid to not lose.

i got really excited when a homegas record came into the store several months ago with a huge country collection, but it was warped beyond any hope of repair :(

it's a great record, but tough.. just hold on hope and you will get one.

i mean, it is a v early one, and one i don't think was kept in print very long, but just... jesus. i get antsy when i see ppl have $20 on some of those records (tho in terms of musical quality the are almost all outstanding.) (400/500 series anyway. 700 series is good depending on what u like. some good records there though. tommy jarrell, stanley brothers, but it's more bluegrass and/or old-time revival recordings. a few recordings of oldtimers tho, like clark kessinger.)

I've never heard of richard dobson, but the cover to The Big Taste looks great and of course I like the title 'in texas last december'. There's a copy of discogs of the Big Taste for $50, which seems a little high. I'll keep him on my watch list though.

So I looked in every record store in Austin for early richard dobson records, but with no luck. I thought for sure Antones would have one, but my friend who works there said those are getting hard to find, that people don't bring them in much anymore.

i didn't know sussurate came out on LP. i guess it makes sense that it did. great album.

It's got to be very rare, I'm sure. Free-D seems a bit more findable.

Oh and Ian if you ever stumble on early to mid 90s Slumberland stuff, and similarly any related bands of the era please give me a heads up (1988 - 1995 jangle pop/shoegaze/scuzzy lo-fi)

Also I really like darker country music and early blues, like Yazoo stuff.

yazoo rekkerds come & go in the span of a few days usually but will keep my eyes open. i think i need less than 5 of the yazoos now -- very exciting.
sometimes i do see weird slumberland stuff, will keep you posted.

I've got the Skip James Sessions! Such a great find, a mint copy among lots of generic 70s records in a box that came into the store I used to work at.

I wish I had the Robert Wilkins- Original Rolling Stone on LP. Love that album.

i have the matchbox issue of the 1928 sessions but it's got pretty lousy sound.

the robert wilkins is a-mazing, one of my faves.

The records themselves of the early Skip James recordings were pretty nasty so I'm not sure how good they can possibly sound, given that I have the 1931 sessions as well as a compilation called "Delta Blues Heavy Hitters 1927-1931" containing the same cuts but on Heroin records and both are kind of mucky. I can't remember too much of a sound quality variation between them but perhaps it's better than the 1928 session overall?

I took your word for it. In that case, yeah I've found the source recordings of those 31 sessions are just nasty sounding, given I have samples of them on three different records.

well, some of those records only exist in a handful of copies. but the yazoo mastering was a lot better than companies like Origin Jazz Library or Document.

fyi i got my first blind lemon jefferson 78 this week. worn copy of black snake moan that still plays prettttttty good.
