christellar om source wants $50 for one of the last copies of rise in planes..................................................
― ☆, Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:42 (fourteen years ago) link
want:
- Kruder & Dorfmeister, The K&D Sessions- Caretaker, Persistent Repetition of Phrases- Leyland Kirby, Sadly The Future Is Not What We Thought It Was 1-3 (especially volume 2, which seems to be rarer than hens teeth despite probably being the least satisfying of all three parts)- Phillip Glass, Einstein on the Beach (this isn't actually that hard to find, but it's never on eBay for less than like eighty bucks whenever I have money to burn)- Midlake, The Trials of Van Occupanther (I am all for archly limited releases but only releasing 200 vinyl copies of yr best album?! Tim Smith, why you brake heart)
and three albums I desperately covet on vinyl but can't bring myself to overspend on since I already have them on CD: - Animal Collective, Sung Tongs (DMM reissue)- Ben Folds Five, The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner- Mazzy Star, So That Tonight I May See

the thing i want to know about the whole "minimal synth" retro thing is do the people who buy it and listen to it already own every great dollar 80's synth album out there? cuz there are a lot of them. i've been listening to the stuff since, you know, 1980, and i haven't even heard ten percent of the good 80's stuff. which is why i guess i'm never big on retro movements. same with the electroclash thing whenever that was. why would i buy an ADULT 12 inch for ten bucks when i can buy a great 80's album for a quarter? if the new stuff were way better than i could understand, i guess. maybe it is. i haven't heard much of it.

Anyone ever see Karin Krog records out there? I have some amazing greatest hits or something cd from college and just looked on eBay and the albums go for like $250. Are there reissues?
― jaxon, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 01:46 (fourteen years ago) link
Scott, I buy tons of cheap 80s records, but the thing with this genre is that most of it wasn't made in the states. So, even though most of the new stuff isn't as good, I sometimes like a new $10 lp vs a Belgian $100 7".

Ballad of the Band is good, but certainly not $25 good. Rain of Crystal Spires is good, Poem of the River is good. all of the stuff listed is after my favorite Felt era, so i may not be the best guide.

Hello ,Due to the extreme limited nature of The Alvarius B LP it unfortunately sold out instantaneously. Please be aware that the deluxe CD/Book will be released on April 12, 2011.Just as impressive as the LP the CD is released in a hardback digibook format. Let us know if you would like to pre-order a copy. We will switch your current order to a pre-order and ship your CD when it arrives.
ah well, fuck this artificial scarcity bullshit anyways (/sourgrapes).

Judy henske albums - I have a little bit of sunshine, a little bit of rain.
Los hermanos diablos albums - I have Un beso nada mas.
Alessi bros. - alessi
Squirrel ashcraft - squirrel's 2nd (if it exists? I have "informal session at squirrel's," which is a 2x10" in a brown paper sleeve, and squirrel's 3rd. Maybe there's a second AND a first, in which case I want both)
That's all off the top of my head.

I listen to the first song off sunshine/rain pretty often. The thought that she has better albums is exciting.
I should try eBay after I move and get settled. I was thinking recently about records that have a big disparity in price or rarity depending on context, like the Julie London record that's fifty in the record store and a buck in a dozen thrift stores, or all the supposed thrift store type records that you don't see anywhere (I haven't been able to find crazy horses by the osmonds).

Fat Hit I had it on vinyl years ago but lost all the records I had in this country at that point. Reccommended records have failed to release the lp on cd despite it being epically brilliant.Would love a decent Flac burn of the thing.
Also why the f*** hasn't any reissue label redone Conqueroo Live At The Vulcan Gas Co. Would think links to 13th Floor Elevators would mean a compilation of their work was bound to sell. Quite apart from them being pretty stunning in their own right.

I have that Fat album and wish I had a way of ripping it for you cos it is fucking great. Got another one of theirs too called Automat Hi-Life that came out on some Czech label, but that one probably isn't quite as good.

i didn't know sussurate came out on LP. i guess it makes sense that it did. great album.
It's got to be very rare, I'm sure. Free-D seems a bit more findable.

Oh and Ian if you ever stumble on early to mid 90s Slumberland stuff, and similarly any related bands of the era please give me a heads up (1988 - 1995 jangle pop/shoegaze/scuzzy lo-fi)
Also I really like darker country music and early blues, like Yazoo stuff.
― Evan, Thursday, 27 September 2012 14:56 (twelve years ago) link
yazoo rekkerds come & go in the span of a few days usually but will keep my eyes open. i think i need less than 5 of the yazoos now -- very exciting. sometimes i do see weird slumberland stuff, will keep you posted.do you have a copy of the clean compilation? i am selling my copy. it's just the mississippi recs reissue.
― i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Thursday, 27 September 2012 15:31 (twelve years ago) link
That's impressive, which yazoos are you missing? Thanks!I do not! What does it consist of again- rarities?

i'm not sure off the top of my head which ones i'm missing... i know i need alabama blues, blues from the western states, skip james sessions and buddy boy hawkins & his buddies. might bneed a few more. so i guess not less than 5. but less than 10 iirc.
― i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Thursday, 27 September 2012 17:31 (twelve years ago) link
I've got the Skip James Sessions! Such a great find, a mint copy among lots of generic 70s records in a box that came into the store I used to work at.

added to watch list.i have the matchbox issue of the 1928 sessions but it's got pretty lousy sound.
the robert wilkins is a-mazing, one of my faves.
― i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Thursday, 27 September 2012 18:18 (twelve years ago) link
The records themselves of the early Skip James recordings were pretty nasty so I'm not sure how good they can possibly sound, given that I have the 1931 sessions as well as a compilation called "Delta Blues Heavy Hitters 1927-1931" containing the same cuts but on Heroin records and both are kind of mucky. I can't remember too much of a sound quality variation between them but perhaps it's better than the 1928 session overall?
― Evan, Thursday, 27 September 2012 19:13 (twelve years ago) link
err,, 31 sessions, yeah, i dunno where 28 came from
― i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Thursday, 27 September 2012 19:18 (twelve years ago) link
I took your word for it. In that case, yeah I've found the source recordings of those 31 sessions are just nasty sounding, given I have samples of them on three different records.
― Evan, Thursday, 27 September 2012 19:41 (twelve years ago) link
well, some of those records only exist in a handful of copies. but the yazoo mastering was a lot better than companies like Origin Jazz Library or Document.

― Evan, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 17:20 (eleven years ago) link
So... I didn't have the guts to pay the full (rightful) price for the Lilys record.
I'm very uncomfortable with my materialism in which I obsess over records I don't have, but I guess my latest "gee I really should own the vinyl versions" distracting thoughts are focused on the Kozelek catalog.
I wish that from the beginning I had subscribed to the Caldo Verde updates and pre-ordered every release he put out because I am a super fan and I should own all this exclusive/limited junk dammit! So much live material and rapidly appreciating vinyl versions I don't have! The torture.

Another maddening and nerdy category is the records-you'd-never-have-expected-to-go-out-of-print:
Cass McCombs - ACass McCombs - Prefection
Loads of these lying around in 2009-10 but no more...
― Evan, Monday, 26 August 2013 14:48 (eleven years ago) link
i am trying really hard to abandon my need for material objects. not entirely, but if i have records lying around i love but don't listen to, it might be time to let them go..but it's tough. where do you draw the line?
― i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Monday, 26 August 2013 15:01 (eleven years ago) link
its hard for me to have something for, like, 20 years or more and get rid of it even if i don't play it. especially if i never see it for sale. because i've had it for so long. and if i get rid of it what if i never see another one...this is the way you drive yourself crazy. so, its easier, in general, for me to take more recent stuff out of the house and into the store even if its super cool. the bond isn't as strong.

Most of my holy grails have been found at antique malls, goodwills, flea markets and junk shops. Not only in texas, but Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Tennessee, Ohio, Louisiana, Maryland, D.C. Mid-size to small towns are the best places to look. When I travel, it takes forever to get anywhere because I take every exit and stop everywhere. I just found a sealed copy of this http://collectorsfrenzy.com/details/120660417181/PATTERSON__PULTS_Second_Time_Around_private_psych at a thrift store, but I traded it for a soft rock record I've been wanting.

best thing i ever got at a thrift store was probably a McClung Brothers 78. Not because it's valuable but because it baffles me that a fiddle & guitar 78, that probably didn't sell many copies in new york despite being recorded there (at victor studios), would be the ONLY 78 in the shop.
― i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Sunday, 1 September 2013 02:21 (eleven years ago) link
i find stuff at thrift stores. law of averages. i go to the one in town a lot. and rarely find stuff. but every once in a while...
i got scooped bad this year by a local guy who haunts the thrift. he was there a couple minutes ahead of me and he got all kinds of cool sealed audiophile classical. small label early 80's fancy records. avant garde. smooth jazz audiophile records. soundtracks. i almost killed him. then i calmed down. he's a nice guy. karma and all that. he made good money on the stuff. and i got some of the classical later that he didn't sell online.

My best thrift finds have been Damnation of Adam Blessing's first LP and this new wave/punk from san diego comp. And both in the last month, otherwise almost nothing exciting except like Ernest Tubb records.
Got to a bookstore that got a record collection in recently and walked in 30 seconds after this kid found a sealed copy of the Mystic Zephyrs IV LP. Which can be a $800-1,000 record, it's like little kids doing Shaggs-y pop. But I was like "uh, you might want to look that up online before you open it." You know, if you want to pay your rent for a month, you lucky SOB.
