it's a long shot, but does anyone know what a copy of the Allen-Ward Trio on Vanguard sells for? 1965. Stereolab copy. Good shape. I've never actually seen one before. Group with David Rea on guitar. I can't find a copy anywhere online. maybe i'm not looking hard enough. okay, that's not true anymore. found ONE copy on musicstack going for $250. i find that hard to believe.
anyway, this can be an all-purpose thread for questions of price. you see something tempting on someone's wall and yer wondering if its worth yer hard earned cashola.

some people are just really out of touch. they're hard to deal with cuz they really think they know what they're talking about but are so often guided by things like goldmine & record collector magazine. something is only worth as much as you can sell it for--i don't care if yer seventies elvis picture sleeve is "mint" it ain't worth more than a couple bucks.

― scott seward, Friday, 13 November 2009 16:06 (fifteen years ago) link
OK, I don't know.
I believe the Capitol ones had the sleeve above as well, so here goes:
The Beatles albums sold plenty when first out, so they are only worth decent sums if they are close to excellent in appearance and play quality, sleeve/inners (and insert) included. (Prices go exponential the closer they get to mint)
30 bucks sounds a bit high for yours. Check e-bay completed auctions is yr best bet.

I spotted a Johnny Cash box in a local record shop today at £8. It caught my eye because I remember my Dad buying it in the 70s. It was a mail order Readers Digest thing with 6 vinyl album entitled things like "Johnny in Love" and "Johnny in Jail".
I've found a couple of copies online ranging from £14 with no bids on eBay to £44 on Virgin Shops to $72 on Musicstack.
Here's the eBay listing: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JOHNNY-CASH-'THE-BEST-OF'-READERS-DIGEST-6-x-LP-BOX-SET_W0QQitemZ370296578109QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxq20091126?IMSfp=TL091126203009r31676#ht_1081wt_993
Can anyone give me a rough idea what it might actually be worth?

Thanks amateurist, that's what I figured given that there's one on eBay for £14 with seemingly no interest whatsoever, I just wondered why there are other sites trying to punt it for 4 or 5 times that amount. I suppose they're working on the 'one born every minute' theory.
I think I'll pick it up anyway as it's in great condition and it's 60 or thereabouts Johnny Cash songs on nice shiny vinyl for £8.

23.8 u.s. dollars to be exact. hell, i'd probably sell it for more than that in my store. i'd put it on my wall for 30 bucks. it would look nice on my wall.

got a 2nd state pasted over butcher cover. has some splits but it's not in terrible shape. the vinyl is pretty beat but i figure that don't matter much. someone can just swap another copy for the beat one. was gonna bring it to the record show tomorrow. any thoughts? 2nd state covers seem to be in the 3 to 4 hundred range, so i thought about going low at 250 and actually selling the damn thing. or should i be a record show jerk and go high?

The store I used to work at there was someone who had no knowledge of music and is just there for the job, basically priced everything to sell immediately on Amazon. So our actual visiting customers generally would have only the shitty records that went for way less online in stock, along with overpriced shit that we were forced to just about match prices with online and end up sitting on forever (until 6 month price adjustments). Drove me kind of crazy, since any good fresh used inventory that just came in would be 60% gone the next day due to amazon sales.

Bob Djukic is someone who for some unbelievable and unknown reason gets tons and tons and tons of money for his records on ebay -- there are various theories as to why including his lavish descriptions, huge number of auctions going up at once, and potential shill-bidding conspiracy theories. my pet theory is that his customers are all wealthy russians.

i got a copy of "Sweet England" for $6 from a rekkerd dealer but had to sell it cuz i needed da money.
Yknow speaking of price checks, I just came upon a copy of an Early Music Consort of London record (w David Munrow) that was still shrink wrapped and priced at $2?! It's Pleasures of the Royal Court. Whaaaaa?
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 00:42 (eleven years ago) link
that's not terribly underpriced, really. there are a lot of 'early music' records out there and not too many people collecting that stuff. you can get tons of similar stuff on the Music Heritage Society label for just a few bucks.

Ahaaaaa...all the better for me, then! I got The Art of the Netherlands box for like $6 not too long ago.

why it always pays to do your homework. i was gonna keep this record. it sounded nice. i like 50's stuff. hard sell in the store. as an afterthought i looked at what it had been selling for. its sells for quite a bit! who knew?

skott you should really check out my guys at YESTERDAY'S NEWS in Riverside, RI sometime. crazy dude who runs an antique store but also has tons of record, most of which are $1. and he gives you bulk discounts on top of that. hit or miss, but if you get to him at the right time there are lots of gems. i bought a bunch of 'fake latin' records. cha cha, mambo stuff. mancini goes latin.

private press LP
"You Can't Have Your Future Till Tomorrow"
by
Tina Christine and Questor
from my friend:
"It's not on a label but produced by Sound City Studio in Shreveport, Louisiana. It's autographed by Tina and is a 1970s female vocal/soft rock album with some grooves and covers and sample-able moments on keys. There is no discogs page, or popsike or anything. Only hits online are asking $150 but no other info. I kno ppl collect shit like this and get boned up on private press stuff. Any ideas? "
