is set sale stuff okay for this thread. my brother thinks he might want to post stuff exclusively for i love vinyl people. and maybe i will too. you know, weird stuff.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 October 2009 21:44 (fifteen years ago) link

arthur russell instrumentals wha???

psychgawsple, Thursday, 29 October 2009 21:50 (fifteen years ago) link

think i forgot that existed- is it similar to the peter zummo stuff?

psychgawsple, Thursday, 29 October 2009 21:51 (fifteen years ago) link

i think this thread can be anything we want it to be. sales/trades/stuff only for this thread/ebay. whatevs. stuff we don't want anymore.

russell instrumentals is classical music. i think there was a double cd that came out a few years back w/it on there.

jaxon, Thursday, 29 October 2009 22:03 (fifteen years ago) link

brandon, if any of that stuff doesn't sell, i will gladly sell/trade to you.

u can listen to clips of the john greaves here.

does that link work for you non-sellers of the item?

69, Thursday, 29 October 2009 22:36 (fifteen years ago) link

hmm... G+ denotes something much worse than what you describe in my experience--a spine crack and some stains is solid VG territory imo.

ok ended up $21.71 to greece. it's 2LP, and ill pack it well -- what should i charge this guy on the invoice?

69, Thursday, 5 November 2009 22:32 (fifteen years ago) link

we have a lil post office at work and everything to europe (norway & belgium) has been $12.48. i usually charge 14 to cover the box, etc.

jaxon, Thursday, 5 November 2009 22:38 (fifteen years ago) link

might wanna charge a bit more to cover the 2xlp?

jaxon, Thursday, 5 November 2009 22:38 (fifteen years ago) link

i charge a flat 15 to anywhere outside the states. nobody gripes. i pack nicely.

scott seward, Thursday, 5 November 2009 22:43 (fifteen years ago) link

so on my page i said $4 per record for shipping and $1 extra if you buy more than one. i sold a double LP. do i charge $5?

jaxon, Monday, 9 November 2009 21:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes.

Disco Stfu (Raw Patrick), Monday, 9 November 2009 21:15 (fifteen years ago) link

also, one guy lives 10 minutes from my work. do i tell him he can just pick up from me? or is that creeps?

jaxon, Monday, 9 November 2009 21:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Give him the option and see what he says? Seems like that would be the way to go. :-)

kshighway1, Monday, 9 November 2009 21:23 (fifteen years ago) link

I've dropped stuff off for people who live near me. It seems wasteful to send it through the mail in that instance. Plus it's really interesting to see who is buying off you. One guy I'm Facebook friends with now.

Disco Stfu (Raw Patrick), Monday, 9 November 2009 23:29 (fifteen years ago) link

pulled out 150-200 records to sell last night, and it feels so good. my idea was to hit RED DEVIL in san rafael, then amoeba with the remains. any SFers have any different advice on places to sell? i saved a couple for ebay (mayyors 12" 1st press and a couple hoZac singles), but im mostly tryna just get SOME money and put some shit in stores...

69, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 18:12 (fifteen years ago) link

i've gotten rid of most of my records (stuff that's worth less than 10$ to me) at grooves and then amoeba. i probably got rid of 300 records and got like 200 in credit. so don't expect much. lot of it really was dollar crap though. i have another box or 2 of crap to get rid of, so i'll be your road dog if you want.

i ended up having that guy pick up the record from me. it was vvv awkward to say the least. o well, at least it was quick

jaxon, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 18:24 (fifteen years ago) link

did he try to get into yer stacks?

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 19:02 (fifteen years ago) link

how was it awkward? i've had local sales on ebay too, to date i've avoided IRL cash/LP exchanges though.

jØrdån (omar little), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 19:06 (fifteen years ago) link

I sold and dropped off a GSYBE LP to a fiftyish hippy kinda guy. I thought he might invite me in to get high but he didn't.

Disco Stfu (Raw Patrick), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 19:32 (fifteen years ago) link

i guess it wasn't that weird. he was just very nonplussed about the whole thing. he was sorta red neck gangstery and when i tried to shake his hand (why i did it, i have no idea?) he didn't really want to.

jaxon, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 20:06 (fifteen years ago) link

and then i was gonna tell him a 'awesome' story about where i found the record and sorta decided to keep it to myself

jaxon, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 20:08 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i kinda feel like handing the record over in person will just lead to one of three things:

a) person wanting to hang out and talk about records for an hour
b) person checking the record very carefully for flaws and trying to talk the price down
c) person being generally awkward and weird

jØrdån (omar little), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 20:09 (fifteen years ago) link

this is DEFINITELY where you need to pretend to have just gotten a phone call and be like sorry for the rush!! everyone will appreciate that.

69, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 20:13 (fifteen years ago) link

about 10 years ago did face to face LP sale to save on shipping and met one of my bestest SF bros ever. we ended up working together, got me into biking, hooked me up on my old apartment (lol @ italian mafia), hookups with his rad sister in NYC (soooo hot, altho perpetually dated awesome chefs so it was a wash), awesome color played his bday party...

seriously one of the coolest guys ever.

jØrdån (omar little), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 22:55 (fifteen years ago) link

spacemen 3 is always good ebay bait.

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 22:57 (fifteen years ago) link

or, to put it another way, demand outpaces supply. in the case of spacemen 3.

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 22:58 (fifteen years ago) link

it's the one that was on sympathy, 'to all the fucked-up children of the world'. i think it goes for between $30-$65, depending on luck.

sold $450 of records this weekend! then quickly reinvested $250 in cecil taylor, anthony braxton, roland kirk, mimi and richard twofer, yazoo's hawaiian hotshots LP, ebenezer obey, and a buncha other stuff! ill post the new list a little later...

69, Sunday, 22 November 2009 23:38 (fifteen years ago) link

whoa. that took a weird turn. scott got all ethan on me. and wrongfully so. he was kinda juggaloish. and seriously, when's the last time you heard a black guy into PE? to me the people that go on and on about them are 35+ yr old white guys.

jaxon, Monday, 23 November 2009 01:00 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm getting tempted to sell half my collection and go for a more quality over quantity thing, but the problem is i feel like i'll regret it within a few days. but i can't spend much on vinyl without trading in or selling because i'm saving every dirty dime for my w3dd1ng. it's a real catch-22. should i just call off the wedding so i can get a bunch of mississippi records shit and a huge order from boomkat?? y/n???

jØrdån (omar little), Monday, 23 November 2009 01:21 (fifteen years ago) link

jaxon, Monday, 23 November 2009 03:16 (fifteen years ago) link

also (it won't let me post link to unnece$$@ry g00glepr00fing thread)

jaxon, Monday, 23 November 2009 03:17 (fifteen years ago) link

i really want to thin the collection big time also. records are taking over the place. i really wanted to take my ebay earnings (i made like $450 off 19 records and a few of the wife's sunglasses) and go big and buy stuff i've always felt were too expensive, but damn if i'm not having a hard time dropping $60 on a 12"

jaxon, Monday, 23 November 2009 03:21 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah that's kinda the thing too, even if can suddenly afford something i've had my eye on like that new numero uno big LP set or a single lp for $40, i'll end up buying a dozen cheaper LPs instead.

jØrdån (omar little), Monday, 23 November 2009 03:37 (fifteen years ago) link

try not to worry about it too much. there are a lot of records out there. lots of good stuff to listen to. when you have the money, go for it. when you don't...um, buy more country records. there are lots of good dollar country records! or go classical! hundreds of years of amazing music for a dollar or less.

scott seward, Monday, 23 November 2009 03:50 (fifteen years ago) link

jaxon, i sold at r3d d3vil in san rafael. he took $106 worth of records, then his ex-employee took a look at the rest of my records (a few gems, but mostly just STOCK of mine), and offered me $350 for the rest. i was all-too-happy to oblige. sorry no group expedition this time -- we were breezin through on our way to a friend's house -- but i DEF wanna hit up some SJ/marin/east-bay stuff soon. maybe coliseum flea market before christmas? alameda flea market? alemany flea market? fruitvale? ill go wherever.

what's up with eBay only allowing you to charge $4.00 to ship a vinyl LP, even a boxed set??????????? is there any way to get around this?

figuratively, but in a very real way (amateurist), Saturday, 28 November 2009 04:13 (fifteen years ago) link

just tell people in your description what the shipping really is.

scott seward, Saturday, 28 November 2009 04:42 (fifteen years ago) link

but if they pay right after the auction's over with the automated invoice, then i'll have to ask them for additional $$, which is awkward.

figuratively, but in a very real way (amateurist), Saturday, 28 November 2009 05:25 (fifteen years ago) link

also: why the fuck does amazon do that?

figuratively, but in a very real way (amateurist), Saturday, 28 November 2009 05:25 (fifteen years ago) link

another thing you can do is decide what the minimum amount is that you want to get for an item then add the actual shipping cost to that price and then provide free shipping. people LOVE free shipping. so, if for instance, you want to get at least 8 bucks for a record and the actual shipping cost is 5 bucks first class or media mail then start that record at 12.99. (just make sure that whatever you are selling isn't something that ten other people are selling for less with buy it now or whatever)

scott seward, Saturday, 28 November 2009 14:44 (fifteen years ago) link

that's an excellent idea. i presume you can still charge overseas shipping, though.

figuratively, but in a very real way (amateurist), Saturday, 28 November 2009 19:33 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i just do a flat rate for around the world. i charge 15 dollars for anywhere in the world and it evens out okay. sometimes it costs 11 or 12 or 13. even 2 or 3 records in a box is usually 15 or under. dunno about a boxed set, but even then its probably not much more than 15 bucks.

scott seward, Saturday, 28 November 2009 19:41 (fifteen years ago) link

hey so a lot of my stuff is selling!

i sold a folkways record to a dude in italy. im fine with that, but i wanna take the proper precautions for ensuring (perhaps by insuring) its arrival. what should i charge? what should i say? what protection should i use?

69, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 19:15 (fifteen years ago) link

registered mail only to Italy, although that prob'ly should have been in your description.

sleeve, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 22:52 (fifteen years ago) link

or just don't sell to italy. which i'm thinking of doing the next time i sell stuff. sadly, they do buy a lot of records, but they can be a big hassle.

69, Sunday, 13 December 2009 02:01 (fifteen years ago) link

is anyone else ever tempted to sell off 3/4ths of their collection and start almost completely anew?

you are wrong I'm bone thugs in harmon (omar little), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 20:34 (fifteen years ago) link

Um, no. I have lost count of the number of records I've sold & then re-bought later so I now have a no selling policy. There's plenty of records I could be embarrassed about owning but resale/trade value + cost or availability of getting a bunch of new records just doesn't add up for me.

Bill E, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

xp yeah, i sometimes am. what's more attractive to me, though, is a "freshwater" collection, where there's no solid core of collection, per se? like, maybe 50% of things flow into and out of the collection in five years or something, and i hold on to things for as long as i want, but no longer.

69, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 21:03 (fifteen years ago) link

For the most part none of my records are really worth much, though I do have a Sunburned Hand Of The Man Jaybird CDR on EBay with TWOOO watchers right now . I have a box of records I mean to put up, and I think I have a Hendrix/Little Richard thing that's worth I dunno $25-35 or something (?) but none o the rest are actually worth anything iirc. I kinda suck at collector.

i told a friend of mine to sell his vinyl copy of 'summerteeth' by wilco because it went for $150+ on ebay, but he refused since he wanted to have it on lp and now they've reissued it. i've made that mistake too, either because i was afraid i'd never again get it on lp or i wanted to see if the price would go up any more. this explains why i still have three murder city devils lps.

It got removed for copyright violation!

Möbius dick (╓abies), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 20:45 (fourteen years ago) link

If you buy an album or recording on eBay that was released by a local band on CD-R, you're not allowed to list the album on eBay even though the band released the album on CD-R, because you're not the copyright owner.

I really needed the money :(

Möbius dick (╓abies), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 20:51 (fourteen years ago) link

wtf? what if they're not a local band.

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 22:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah it's weird, and sucks. I wonder if I had kept 'CDR' out of the title and just listed it as 'Manhand 003' or whatever it is I would have been okay.

Möbius dick (╓abies), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 22:30 (fourteen years ago) link

But maybe it's just Jon Moloney being a dick:

The listing was removed because the brand owner reported to us that the item offered for sale was infringing on their copyrights.

Möbius dick (╓abies), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 22:36 (fourteen years ago) link

How is selling a CDR any different than selling a regular CD?

kshighway (ksh), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 22:45 (fourteen years ago) link

it shouldn't be as long as the CD-R is not an illegal copy of a copyrighted work.

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 23:00 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, that's what I thought.

kshighway (ksh), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 23:02 (fourteen years ago) link

Maybe they forgot that it was originally a CDr.

As you say, avoid saying it's a CDR and rephrase it "as originally issued on a recordable CD by the artist themselves..."

Mark G, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 23:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Möbius dick (╓abies), Monday, 8 February 2010 22:08 (fourteen years ago) link

I think I jinxed it.

The craiglist ad title said "techno and house records", the description said "techno and house records", (and never was there a single thing written that would suggest otherwise), and I listed every record, with artist, title and label. Now this idiot first replies back saying he want's to take them all, then (after asking me to meet him in deep in the suburbs) he writes to me "and also i just want to make sure that there in good condish and there all like rnb hiphop elictro and all that ?"

If this guy doesn't have hardcore cognitive issues, then I've lost a good chunk of faith in humanity.

Also ha at "good condish".

EDB, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 01:18 (fourteen years ago) link

oof!

if it makes you feel any better, the person from india who recently bought a record off of me on ebay for 250 dollars didn't end up paying for it because they didn't know that the amount was in "American money".

Möbius dick (╓abies), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 01:49 (fourteen years ago) link

that's bullshit, ebay always converts the bid price into "local" currency on international auctions... the price in rupees would have appeared next to the amount in USD.

also, yeah I am really burned out on the pittance that I get for trades, I'd rather spend the extra time and get twice that on eBay or whatever. also hate seeing things that I traded for less than $10 of credit show up in the "collectibles" bin for $40 a month later.

note: this is written from the post-record-show feeling of what the hell do I do with all these records I didn't want anyway. Too much trouble to refile them (plus I want the shelf space), not sure I have the space in the house to keep them separated.

Anyway, I'll probably post the best 50 or so things here before they go to eBay, along with ILV discounts.

sometimes i wonder where the hell amoeba gets their "imperfect" cds because i'll go in there with a stack of cds in totally presentable shape but w/a super faint scratch on them and they'll push them back at me because they're not in "good shape". meanwhile i can go pay $5 for a cd there and it looks twenty times worse.

It's 6%. You have to be patient selling stuff on Discogs though, rare things can go very quickly, but most stuff will take years to shift. Super easy to list everything though.

sold $300 worth of 7"s to a german dude on discogs with no feedback profile. money hit already -- is there any way to protect myself against chargeback and insure the delivery? it was $266 worth of records, so maybe the risk isnt worth paying $100 or something for some tracked/registered mail, but maybe there's a $50 option or something? dont wanna be paranoid, but international shipping for this much stuff just feels EEEE

69, Friday, 10 February 2012 15:43 (twelve years ago) link

you can surely find some way to get delivery confirmed or signature required or somesuch..? i've been outta the ebay shipping game too long.

one dis leads to another (ian), Friday, 10 February 2012 17:15 (twelve years ago) link

there is an international priority padded envelope that costs about 16 bucks to go overseas and its more secure. you can fit a 7 inch mailer inside it. just has to be under 4 pounds. i need to get some. our post office doesn't have any but the usps will ship you a box of them for free. that way there is tracking at least.

failing that, make sure to send him the number on the customs form and keep the number yourself. if he says he didn't get it you can at least look online and see where it went. and if it made it to germany you can point that out to them and tell them to ask their post office about it.

69, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:04 (twelve years ago) link

I dread selling records! I actually wanted to start a thread about this. I just found this ebay listing by I assume to be a waxidermy guy selling so many amazing records. How does a collector sell records? I know this sounds like a childish question, but I search very hard for the records I love and the idea of selling them seems out of the question. Unless I find doubles of something, selling seems to go against the idea of collecting. A guy on discogs offered my $700 for my original of Good Morning Kisses the other day and even for $1000 I still couldn't bring myself to sell it. For me there's a magic involved in finding rare records and I attached to each one I find. Does this make sense?

JacobSanders, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:16 (twelve years ago) link

totally makes sense! i struggle with it sometimes. but when i decide to sell stuff it's gotta be.. stuff i don't listen to often, stuff i'm gonna get at least a little return on, stuff that is not a part of my 'main steez' or w/e you want to call it. so i'm selling some 45s that don't get played often, and to me if i can make a week's pay or so with a day's work, then i can use that moeny to a) pay bills and b) buy other records that i might listen to more.

but i do see what you mean, totally. i will probably never see a few of these records again! and in that respect they will be missed.

one dis leads to another (ian), Friday, 17 February 2012 19:20 (twelve years ago) link

i'd almost always rather keep the rare ones of course. sometimes it makes more sense to me to sell 30 more common records than 1 or 2 that are really hard to find and $$$.

one dis leads to another (ian), Friday, 17 February 2012 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

best case scenario is finding $$$ stuff that you have little interest in.

scott seward, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:24 (twelve years ago) link

unfortunately, i have lots of interests.

scott seward, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:25 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah I mean money comes and go, I can always make money, but some of the records I have would take forever to find if ever.

JacobSanders, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:25 (twelve years ago) link

every time i think about selling more records i'm haunted by that handful of records that i regret selling. it can be complicated.

nerve_pylon, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:25 (twelve years ago) link

I sold lot's of records in my 20's that I bought in high school, xpressway tapes, flying nun and lots of noise stuff that still haunts me. I didn't know then that they would be so hard to recover.

JacobSanders, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

i was talking to a friend @ work the other day about how i wish i could learn to spot rare and valuable disco 12"s and shit. from working in a record store for a while i have learned a bit about that world, but when it comes down to looking through 12"s at a thrift store i rarely have the patience because it's always destroyed 80s/90s rap records and house, which i know even less abt than disco.

one dis leads to another (ian), Friday, 17 February 2012 19:28 (twelve years ago) link

my one o.g. expressway tape is a cherised possession.
also would never sell my dead c singles.

one dis leads to another (ian), Friday, 17 February 2012 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

i've sold a ton of stuff over the years. sometimes i feel regret. but i dunno i have lots of great records. and i find new ones all the time. eventually i'll die. i'd like to be more zen-like. i'm better at it now definitely. still, the only thing i really regret selling in the last couple of years is like ONE record! chris clark record on motown. it was so minty. not the rarest record in the world. just don't want to buy one online.

scott seward, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:30 (twelve years ago) link

i've been selling lots of $$ reggae and that's perfect for me. don't feel the need to hold on to it. i keep a few cool things.

scott seward, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:30 (twelve years ago) link

^^ def agree with this.

in general, in the past couple years, ive really cottoned to the idea of a freshwater collection (preferably one that is somewhat self-sustaining). basically, i LOVE hunting/finding/buying records, but i have a finite amount of space in my apartment. i havent reached that limit yet, but selling stuff i dont need anymore to make room for more stuff gives me more ability to buy more stuff. i mean, for example, i bought a SHITLOAD of punk 7"s in 2008 and 2009, and now im actively pruning that collection, and turning it into jazz. ill definitely keep my favorite 7"s, but this way, i can always take a weird risk at amoeba or go on someone's recommendation at a record fair or something without worrying too much about overspending/hoarding. sometimes, something i totally expected to love is a turd, and sometimes, something i bought on a whim turns out to be a real favorite.

69, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:33 (twelve years ago) link

as far as buying to sell goes, i will definitely do this, but i havent gotten to the point of going out record shopping just to find things to sell. again, for me, it's just all about if i can sell some dum dum girls record for $100, i can buy that mtume record ive been after!

69, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:35 (twelve years ago) link

I used to have a friend who worked at a certain book shop/record store with lots of traffic and he was the record buyer. Basically he would look for private press records to buy cheap from people selling them and flipped them on ebay for $$$. He had no interest in collecting, just wanted to pay rent. Always bummed me out.

JacobSanders, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:39 (twelve years ago) link

Nice enough guy though

JacobSanders, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:40 (twelve years ago) link

around 1977-78 or so (i was 17) i gave away about 350 rock lps, convinced that i would never ever ever again want to hear any of it again. Punk rock, man. i kept only Bowie, Roxy Music, Sparks... i had and gave away all the ZZ Top lps, CCR, early Byrds pressings, Stones, Mothers, etc etc etc... (in addition to all the Aerosmith, Uriah Heep, UFO, Scorpions, etc etc etc)

nerve_pylon, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:41 (twelve years ago) link

xp yeah -- that's the strawman i fear becoming!

not that i wanna have to rationalize resale to myself, but like, i just want to keep myself in the category of music-lover first, THEN record-collector, THEN ersatz record-dealer.

69, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:42 (twelve years ago) link

I'm not saying I don't flip records I find, I do.

JacobSanders, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:46 (twelve years ago) link

yeah yeah! i just agree -- there IS def something bummery about the joyless hustlers. while i dont actually think that typifies most waxidermy dudes, SOME of them are completely insufferable, both in terms of flip-craze, and also in terms of records-dude sanctimony.

69, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:50 (twelve years ago) link

lol I just sold my o.g. tape of A Beard Of Bees at the record show, made some guy really happy.

I have a separate sell pile that has been pulled out of the main collection over the years. It's pretty self-contained at this point, lives in a different room, etc. But I think it's time to let it build up for a few years again. before I do a convention.

I sometimes flip stuff I find for cheap but like Scott I have wide interests, which makes it harder.

sleeve, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:52 (twelve years ago) link

the people who come to my store looking for "the good stuff" and find no joy in the thousands of decent cheap records i have kinda bum me out sometimes. the kind of guys who urge me to start a sealed record section so that they don't have to dig for ebay stuff. but what are you gonna do? there are also dealers who come here who are perfectly pleasant and i have no problem with hooking them up with stuff to sell. it takes all kinds i guess.

scott seward, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:56 (twelve years ago) link

ditto the crate-digger sites that judge a place based on if they were able to find rare gold in the dollar bins. seems too sports-centric. i love scores and good deals and i like selling records for money, but you gotta stay human.

I wanted to like it more than I do, weird professional sounding studio recording for it being a private record. There's a few records in your list I'd like to snag from you, but money's too tight for the next month. Starting a new job next week, then I'll have the dough rolling in.

i can understand wanting to slim down your collection of country blues.
BUT i cannot understand ever ever ever getting rid of that mississippi john hurt. that is some of the best music ever.

p.s. thanx for the deal dogg -- if that fred van epps/vess ossman doesn't sell at $20 i will give you $10 for it, just because i need it, even though it is v much a marginal title.

Kept frank stokes' dream, charley patton 2lp, going away blues, hawaiian hotshots, and my two lesser vopies of dupes (furry lewis and harmonica blues). I'll probably keep what doesnt sell, but im tryna raise some capital for DC/sac'to digging in the next month -- id been thinking lately that i just dont listen to all these, but i do see them a lot, yknow?

I'm interested in the guitar wizards and the country bottleneck just based on curiosity alone. Recommended?

Also isn't the Mississippi Blues comp still in print with a $15 list? I just got mine this past summer.

Evan, Monday, 7 January 2013 18:10 (twelve years ago) link

mississippi blues was one of the first titles reissued by scorpio -- they've now done 9 or 10 yazoo titles, i think, but the originals remain collectible.

this customer is a jerk (La Lechera), Monday, 28 January 2013 21:05 (eleven years ago) link

That blows, will eBay be upping their max allowed shipping charge in response?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 28 January 2013 21:07 (eleven years ago) link

international shipping i used to charge a flat rate of 14 intl, even though it was usually a few dollars more.
i forgot to up my flat rate on the items that were ending today, and once they have a bid or whatever it's too late.
if i went back now and charged people +$5 they would likely all complain and it's not really worth the hassle of irritating people.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Monday, 28 January 2013 21:22 (eleven years ago) link

i always charge 15. 10 for 45's. and i combine so if someone gets three 45's i still charge them 10 bucks. but i don't know what the new rates are. i've been starting good 45's at $9.95 for my auctions and doing free shipping for the u.s. i've gotten a lot more u.s. buyers since i started doing that. people in europe don't care what you charge them for anything. their money is so much stronger than the u.s. dollar. they get bargains galore.

scott seward, Monday, 28 January 2013 21:53 (eleven years ago) link

they are kinda getting a 30% discount whenever they buy anything from the u.s. (don't quote me on that. i just hear this stuff from maria who gets paid in euros mostly for her freelance work.)

think its so funny for some reason that there is a REISSUE of the ned doheny album. a dollar record for most of its lifetime.

scott seward, Monday, 25 March 2013 19:22 (eleven years ago) link

doheny "re" is a boot and i'm sure most of the demand for it is euro club scene related. that first track is a banger, rest of it is pretty damn boring. i gave my copy away. that said, it may have always been a $1 record but it's a pretty damn rare $1 record. i haven't seen that shit for any price in a store in a long time.

I will buy your Fahey and Basho records you all don't need, probably. I have most of the reissues, but am always looking for the other albums still hard to come by. The only Fahey record I can say I definitely don't want is the one with the Clapton cover on it. Oh and dammit that Homegas (speaking of Takoma I guess).

Also any other recommendations of yours. I am also very ignorant relatively about cool 60s and 70s rock too. I'm looking to know what is essential; it is embarrassing how bad I am about almost anything prior to the late 80s.

Evan, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 15:58 (eleven years ago) link

funny how expensive the windham hill basho records got. i guess nobody bought them when they came out? funny cuz they are the records people would tend to pass up just cuz they were on windham hill. or sell cheaper than the earlier ones.

scott seward, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 16:34 (eleven years ago) link

"I will buy your Fahey and Basho records you all don't need, probably."

i always need them! cuz i can sell them in a minute. well, except for the *A Very Fahey Christmas* album or whatever. that's why i never keep them for myself.

scott seward, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 16:40 (eleven years ago) link

Sell them in a minute to me!

Anyway, about those recommendations... don't be shy. Assume I know nothing because I'm sure comparatively to all of you it's true. I was always the 90s indie expert at the record store and referred 60s-mid 80s inquiries to another employee.

Evan, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 18:28 (eleven years ago) link

And with Basho Visions Of The Country is my most desperately needed.

Evan, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 18:30 (eleven years ago) link

i sold a copy of that to my friend tony. gave him a great deal. tony is in the awesome band sqrm. i love sqrm. they just played the other night with dropdead and i couldn't go :(

scott seward, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 19:50 (eleven years ago) link

i think i saw one at feeding tube but they wanted like 70 bucks or something? some price i would never pay. they have a beat up homegas too for 40 bucks. i would like a nice copy of that. i bought some other stuff when i was there. a stephen r. smith album i didn't have. i love that guy. he's my basho! or something. i want all his records. bought a hala strana record somewhere else the same day. i might have to break down and buy some of his CDs online. something tells me a lot of that jewelled antler stuff doesn't sell for what it used to sell for.

scott seward, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 19:55 (eleven years ago) link

Bummer. I'm sure I'll come across one of each (Basho/Homegas). Seems pricey? I COULD just look up the Basho on collectorsfrenzy to get a more realistic idea, rather than keep typing this sentence.

Evan, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 20:27 (eleven years ago) link

http://collectorsfrenzy.com/search?q=visions+of+the+country&search-button=

Well. Those last two copies that went aren't a good control? Copies prior are a bit far back to be relevant, too. I'd have paid $24 that's for sure.

Evan, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 20:29 (eleven years ago) link

private psych single i was selling didn't sell for as much as i had hoped. but that's what i get for being the pioneer. don't think anyone had ever sold one on ebay before. sometimes it pays to sit on stuff and let others be the trailblazers. still, not bad. i actually raised the opening bid on it too in the last day. so, it probably would have gone for less. didn't want to give it away! thought there would be more interest.

Advice wanted:

I have a lot of records to sell. A lot of common records, some easily sellables stuff, some obscure stuff that maybe nobody wants to buy (bluegrass, folk.)

there are two record fairs coming up.

the 20th, the table is $140 (inzane, thought i missed the deadline on this, nbd. brooklyn, williamsburg, hipsters.)
may sometime, table is $65 (signed up for this one already. midtown/west side, hotel ball room, probably weird old dudes)

however, now i found out from my friend i can still get a table for the fair on the 20th, which is likelier going to be the bigger fair with the younger, hipper crowd. so i'm thinking about it. HOWEVER, $140!!! AND, if i sell at the first fair and do really well, i might not have anything good leftover for the fair in may, which i have already committed to. i'm strongly considering trying to do both fairs, especially if i can get someone to share the table with me on the 20th. but it might be a bad idea??

what do you think record dealers of ILX

I'm trying to get kevin from whats your rupture to chip in and have me sell his crap there. a lot of indie labels have tables at the fair, and i think he could sell a lot of parquet courts records.

140 bucks is crazy. even for swanklyn.

scott seward, Friday, 12 April 2013 19:07 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, it seems kind of insane to me. but i think i could probably sell more at that fair than the one in manhattan.

yeah, agreed that 140 is FAR too much. but i think the table-splitting is just a great idea, and will allow you to sell more, look around more, and drink more beerz!

bought like sixty recorsds from the guy.
mostly clean classic rock stuff -- spingsteen, doors, ccr, james taylor, joni mitchell.
highlights: four unesco collections of ethnic field recordings... 2 japanese volumes, 1 from azerbaijan, and sometwhere else too. clean xenakis recod. a relatively common one, but still easy 2 sell to hipsters. VG+ de la soul 3 feet high and rising. a bunch of UK imports of classic hot jazz from the twenties. i like this stuff. i know it's basically impossible to sell to ppl but i might keep them for my own enjoyment

aside from going to guy's storage space and fretting about record fairs, i somehow found time to create 37 listings for sealed soul and funk LPs. they will start sunday. i think i will also list at the same time some random sealed garbage i have -- soundtrack reissues, country, AOR and later era classic rock. but sealed! low starting bids!

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Friday, 12 April 2013 21:58 (eleven years ago) link

66 listings, i think i am done for the day. reaching my monthly limit! already! about half decent sealed soul, the rest a mix of sealed 'junk.' some soundtracks, a couple latin records, some rock/pop and a chunk of country... sealed hank jr, jerry jeff, mickey gilley.

How abt discogs pricing? Do you typically avg it out from discogs prices? Check past ebay sales?

christmas candy bar (al leong), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 16:29 (eleven years ago) link

i think in many cases it's easiest just to beat the lowest price by a few bucks. but you should look at the other copies for sale and see what comparable condition copies are selling for. discogs also has built in sales history features which are useful.

pal of mine says its wax poetics guy selling the jazz rekkerds. uhhhhhh i forget his name. posts on waxidermy.

scott seward, Monday, 1 July 2013 20:48 (eleven years ago) link

d@nte carf@nga -- its amazing stuff. definitely need some of it, but everything i want is gonna go too high since its all together in one auction, i think.

69, Monday, 1 July 2013 20:52 (eleven years ago) link

kinda the feeding frenzy phenomena.

scott seward, Monday, 1 July 2013 20:57 (eleven years ago) link

right, thats what im thinkin. ill still be watching, though! maybe i can pick one or two things up :)

69, Monday, 1 July 2013 21:02 (eleven years ago) link

i'm sure glenn's widow has lots more copies of the LP but she is super chill and more interested in giving it away to bros than selling them. i've never broached the subject of buying any copies with her because it didn't seem kosher. that said, a reissue is in the works if you just wanna hear the music. it's a great record, free but mellow.

the day celina called me about it from work still makes me laugh. "the pe teacher gave me a record to give to you." (uh, cool?) "it's her late husband's record." (rad) "it's jazz from the '80s." (oof, getting colder) "it's only bass and drums." (warmer) "the cat# is 001." (WARMER!).

AND YES I DID ASK THE UNCOUTH QUESTION: "is he a white guy?"

moe handy, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 19:07 (eleven years ago) link

wait why can't i find finished prices for that guy's jazz albums????

scott seward, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 19:37 (eleven years ago) link

i think he exercised some option that allows u to block them

69, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 19:48 (eleven years ago) link

i don't think it's by choice. i could be wrong but "completed listings" has seemed broken for a week or so. sold some stuff for the shop that ended last week and you can't see it when you look by seller/completed listings. and you can't find anything by searching for it but, weirdly enough, direct links seem to still work.

moe handy, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 19:53 (eleven years ago) link

that link still works but when i search for "mark harvey group" in completed listings, nothing shows up.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=mark+harvey+group&LH_Complete=1&rt=nc

i think it's just another example of ebay constantly tinkering with unbroken shit and breaking it in the process.

moe handy, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 19:55 (eleven years ago) link

damn i wanted to see the crazy prices. this is pretty crazy. must be good or something.

Hey Ian! Nice to bump into you the other night. Small city?

Evan, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 02:00 (eleven years ago) link

haha yeah i was really surprised to hear someone shout my name! especially since i'm almost NEVER in the east village on saturday night.
i was listening to 78s with crusty old dudes. it was a blast. got to hear this incredibly violent charley jordan rekkerd --

Yeah I could tell, you needed me to shout it a second time before you believed it was directed at you!
Sounds like great fun. It was a rare appearance there for me as well- haven't visited Scratcher (the bar I was at) in maybe a whole year at least. Speaking of such music, I generally like browsing the country/blues section at Good records across the street from that exact spot. I would love to listen to my records as part of a social experience (somehow) myself!

Evan, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 18:09 (eleven years ago) link

So, you're fortunate to have found a network of 78 dudes. Must be fun/I'm sure you learn a lot!

Evan, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 18:11 (eleven years ago) link

some of these dudes are just incredibly knowledgeable. this one guy seems to know who is playing each instrument on every blues/jug band record ever made. and when it was recorded, and what tuning they players are in. really impressive stuff tbh. it's cool to listen to like, biind wilie mctell and robert johnson records.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

So impressive to talk to people like that. Experts are just fun to meet.

Evan, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 21:03 (eleven years ago) link

Whoa that Charley Jordan song is sort of a Blind Willie McTell song (A-Z Blues). Don't know who did it first. Cool!

I like Uncle Walt's Band! But I'm unemployed still, so...

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Saturday, 10 August 2013 23:55 (eleven years ago) link

David Wagner is a bit overproduced for me. It's nice, but not a fave..

ha, Radio Nederland Worldmusic Dancemusic Comp LP RARE OBSCURE WORLD MUSIC contains my neighbour from across the street where I grew up. He was the drummer of the Hasan Band - never heard him play with the band but did hear him practicing a lot through the open attic window

"Grateful Dead American Beauty MFSL LP AUDIOPHILE NM WOW"

why do I always see this? Are there buyers out there that filter by records and then just search "WOW" or is it simply some really lame attempt to further excite shoppers?

Evan, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 23:16 (ten years ago) link

oh uhhhh i guess i just like to include jokes in my listings

69, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 01:31 (ten years ago) link

Oh I'm sorry that's literally your listing? Didn't mean to offend!!

I forgot what thread I was in and I had a sour day yesterday.

Please forgive. :(

Evan, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 14:08 (ten years ago) link

I mean duh it's your listing*

If you take the dickish tone out of my question I'd say I'm still wondering why I see this overall.

Evan, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 14:10 (ten years ago) link

its all love
