can someone advise me about later incredible string band records? i have 5000 spirits, hangman's beautiful daughter, and wee tam, and im always looking for a copy of the s/t. but i see a bunch of the others around, too. anyone wanna weigh in on rankings of big huge/liquid acrobat, U, changing horses, i looked up, etc etc etc?

wee tam/big huge, either seperately or together is essential. i dunno, i say buy any isb if you see it for a good price. changing horses was never a fave of mine, yet, i really like stuff on earthspan and liquid acrobat, and hard rope and silken twine. so, there is plenty of goodness in the later albums.

word. i saw like all of the albums (except s/t) at amoeba LA this past weekend, and i was tempted...

went to Grey Matter Books last night in Hadley - outside of Northampton - with the kids and Maria to see a show. Bobo/Big Kids/Bunnybrains/Creepy Peepee were playing. We didn't actually get to see my brother play cuz the band was late getting there - stoners! - and we had to get the kids to bed. Though we did get to see my brother and say hi to him and his lovely girlfriend. Bobo from Philly were funny though and Creepy Peepee a.k.a. Crappy Pappy a.k.a. Drippy Hippie were good and loud. Grey Matter is an awesome space. Huge inside. hadn't been there before. This guy Greg I know supplies them with records (he used to be in the band Feathers) and they have a nice section in the back. how bout Phenomenal Handclap Band? saw them earlier tonight at the bowling alley and they were pretty sweet. they were actually more rock than I expected, some of their shit sounded like the Doobie Bros. I was down.

I guess it's debatable how much they are "this sort of thing" compared to Real Life Is No Cool but it's in the ballpark.

I thought they were pretty cool, yeah! They're kinda hard to get a handle on. The first track I heard by them was "Baby," total neo-retro-soul, could be on Daptone records (somebody in Phenomenal Handclap is in Antibalas I think, or in that scene). Then I heard "You'll Disappear" which is waaaaay different, slicker nu-disco track that got the 15-minute Prins Thomas Remiks treatment ...

Live they were somewhere between those 2 extremes, groovy beardo rock with fuzz guitar and the occasional spacey disco synth arpeg. thrown on top. Haven't heard the whole LP yet but now I want to.

the satori has some scuffs but plays pretty clean, surface noise between tracks kinda thing. luckily it's not a quiet LP and it's a good pressing. sounds better than the radioactive lp anyway. it was $50.

The Ex & Tom Cora rekkerd is GRRREAT! both of the albums they made together are among the best stuff the Ex is associated with. and some of the best stuff of the 90s PERIOD

Most of my Ex stuff is on CD though. I only have Aural Guerrilla on LP. And the new 7".

amazing free Ex show in NYC Lincoln Center a couple summers ago, in Ethiopian mode -- they are a band I will always go see.

there is a record store next to my house that had like every Ex release on CD. so I slowly just bought them up figuring, fuck it, I wanna support this place, plus I just wearied at the idea of hunting down all of the original LPs on eBay or whatever. Plus their CD packaging is pretty rad. Stuff like the '1936' thing, which replicates the original book that the vinyl came with. Or 'Dignity of Labour' which comes in a box with all the orignal inserts, etc...

^ pretty good finds at on the corner in san jose. seemed obvious that they came across a bunch of semi-embarrassing 80s vinyl purged from some local college radio station's back stock and were selling most of it for 50 cents apiece. i doubt any of it is worth much in resale value- 'KSCU' is written huge on all the covers and there are stickers and comments all over- but i was pretty happy with what i came across. the dj comments on the pat metheny/ecm stuff are worth the price alone

on the corner is in campbell technically i guess, on e. campbell near the 17. kind of a gold mine even just for their normal (non-50 cent) stock, which is priced very very reasonably. i hear if the owner is there he's really great about recommendations, being friendly etc.

and ugh, al's record barn is such a bummer- dude closes at like 4 and is a total dick about it (seriously YELLING at people because he didn't want to hit traffic, and there were at least 8 customers in the damn shop). i guess records there used to be half-off sticker prices (which are RIDICULOUS- $15 for a phil collins album kind of thing), but we were told they did away with that just last week (!?!?) so my advice is to completely avoid the place. found a $10 copy of 'no pussyfooting' there tho.

streetlight was ok, but i think i was expecting more.

"Stoo" of "Stooz Records" (old store in the east village) is #1 Prelude fan.

Prelude's After the Goldrush was a big hit in Britain in '73, so their records are relatively plentiful and cheap over here - Owlcreek Incident is well worth a pop if you see it.

so went to Portland last weekend to see Jandek and Thurston play. pretty rad city, my first time! hard to make a dent in all of the stores in that town but still managed to fit in 7 in 2 days. think I got some sort of repetitive stress injury on my right had from doing the 'finger-walking' motion through all the stacks. my right arm has been really weak and kind of numb since Monday.

Among some sweet hauls today I got a copy of the Midas Touch 12" by Midnight Star. There is surface noise on the b side of this something awful, making this a perfect choice to try that glue on the record trick but I wouldn't dare on this.

EDB, give the glue a try, as long as you put it on real thick there shouldn't be much risk.

went to my usual haunts today and picked up clean euro classical and various odds and ends. then went somewhere that i never go to because, duh, its not a record store, and my jaw dropped a little. i can go to the regular used record stores around here and only find one or two things that speak to me. most of the time. but today was a whole 'nother thing all together. the gods smiled upon me. AND i spent more than i like to spend. especially cuz i am not swimming in cash or anything. so, the rest of my week will be spent putting stuff on ebay. (also, cuz last week at the store was kinda deadsville except for friday and saturday.) but i had to buy this stuff. couldn't just leave it there unloved!

kalyan - s/t (mca) (this is a great album and its usually cheap, so if you see it cheap, buy it. great mix of funk/disco/soca. really really good funky stuff.)

parliament - osmium (invictus) (!!!!!!!) (the bad news: there is a big split on the bottom of the cover. good news: vinyl is clean and it comes with the lyric sheet. some surface noise, but all in all it sounds nice. i can live with some imperfections cuz i paid four dollars for it.) (!!!!!!!)
