ILV Mixtape Swap

Anybody interested in making a mixtape? The idea would be people sign up for making a mix. I'll take count of said persons with a deadline in mind, and each person makes that number of mixes, with artwork/tracklisting. Ship the mixes to me and I'll ship each person everyone's mixes. Anyone willing to sign up, let me know how much time you will need so I can have an idea for making the deadline. Maybe May?

I would be interested in doing this but would have to get my tape deck back from a friend. multiple copies of the same tape could also take a while to dupe, but there aren't many of us here iirc

I said mixtape, but meant cds. I don't have a dual tape stereo anymore either. Although if someone wants to do a tape that would be cool.

And to get people in, I'll cover the final shipping.

do the tapes have to be tracks from actual vinyl records we own?

i only make tapes. i've never made a cd mix.

Can you make multiple copies of the same tape that's be cool. It would be great if it would be from records since this is I love vinyl, but I realize not everyone has a way to record their records, I don't know.

can i get a gauge on how annoyed people might be by having no track-breaks vs. how hard it is to put track breaks in a cassette-to-digital txfer? i can make sure to annotate the tracks by the tape counter...

it's really easy for me to do track breaks b/c I have been steadily digitizing for like ten years now, it's almost automatic. If there are clear spaces it takes like 5 minutes for a whole tape side.

please note that if you fill up a C90 it won't fit on a CD, so either use 60s or leave some room.

Hey sleeve, can you recommend a good tool to clean up surface noise?

umm... I saw you ask that somewhere, my mom uses a good program for digitizing classical LPs but I don't think it's free... I will ask her.

by "good" I mean "I don't trust any of those programs and I thought it sounded remarkably good"

here's what she said:

(I use) Spin It Again. When you load a sound file there are various options for routines that will "condition" your file to take out hiss, background noise, smooth the peaks (we did this with the oral interviews we were digitizing), etc. You can set the routines individually for each file or you can make a routine including several different options that you can use repeatedly (which is what we did for the interviews). I don't remember what it cost, but I think it was around $80. Look it up on the Web - and there may be a trial version you can try out.

I'm still in for this. End of June. Finally fixed my setup. The power supply on my mixer went bad and it took me a while to replace it.

I need a power supply for my mixer, but they cost $69.00! So I bought a preamp but plugging my turntable directly into my laptop doesn't take care of the ground wire, so there humming and surface noise that I can't get rid of, any ideas aside from just buying the power cord?

jacob - why not just get a cheap thrift store stereo receiver and then run the tape output into your laptop?

I have a receiver, that a few years newer than one you would find at a thrift store, but what about the ground wire?

I mean one that is newer, without a phono input, which is why I bought the preamp, but I have technics with a ground wire?

yeah jacob part of the prob is that you also need a phono preamp between the record player output and your computer, so just running out the leads wont work even w/ a ground wire.

Jacob I think what you want is Technics --> preamp --> receiver CD/AUX input --> RCA-to-whatever out of the receiver "tape out" --> laptop input

Did we ever get anybody to commit to duping actual tapes? I count eleven people so far (list above plus flopson), I think 3 or 4 are doing cassettes? scott, jjjusten, Trip Maker, maybe sarahell? can all of y'all dupe up 11 copies or do we need to find somebody with a dual deck and some spare time?

I have been listening to a great latin mix tape a friend made me a long time ago, can't do it in the car anymore but it's nice to have a deck at home.

I am getting my software upgrade this week so I will probably be able to digitize tapes if 69 or anybody else wants me to.

I don't think there is anything wrong with using an archival tape.
I will be able to make ten duplicates. I started a new tape last night and finished a whole side. New theme is "world rock."

i can dupe my own cassettes--ex-noise bros still got them tape duplicators i can borrow.

i think mine's gonna be Bay Area weird rock for the most part, with maybe a few Bay Area things that aren't weirdo or rock.

It's all 50s - 70s; some psych, some soul, some folk, some country, some pop, some rock and roll. I'm an crowd pleaser.

There's a 75 minute version and a 90 minute version. I only have cases for the c90.
The sound quality will be better on the 75s though. It's a little convoluted.

Take it easy guys! I never meant this idea to be stressful, relax listen to records, finish your mixes when you have time. Thanksgiving or Christmas, I'll hold on to the mixes as they come and send them when I have them all, but don't fret it. Have fun!

I started burning these and I am getting a few bad discs, not sure if it's the laptop drive or the batch of CDRs, but I am checking them now.
