WFMU mini-record fair, just bought four yazoos from willie lane --

v/a: uptown blues
v/a: 10 years of black country religion
v/a: alabama jubilee
buddy boy hawkins & his buddies

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Sunday, 13 January 2013 21:44 (eleven years ago) link

I spent too much on vinyl in Philly yesterday to justify going to that :(

Evan, Sunday, 13 January 2013 21:56 (eleven years ago) link

What is the Alabama Jubliee record? Googling it doesn't result in much.

Evan, Sunday, 13 January 2013 21:59 (eleven years ago) link

oops that;s my bad, it is just "the blues of alabama."

"alabama jubilee" is a fiddle tune

A bit disappointed by the Soul and Jazz selections at the mini-WFMU, but still grabbed these:

The Counts - What's Up Front That Counts
Ornette Coleman - Science Fiction
Blue Note Best of Horace Silver
The Leon Thomas Album
Big John Hamilton - Finally Caught Up With Jody

First time I've come home from a record fair with budgeted cash in the pocket, though.

Hey guys I finally made time for records today! Found a shop in OKC and picked up
Dennis Lambert - Bags & Things (Dunhill)
Ned Doheny - Ned Doheny (Asylum)
Michael Nesmith & The First National Band - Loose Salute (RCA)

JacobSanders, Monday, 28 January 2013 03:17 (eleven years ago) link

I wonder if it was the same place I scored a few things of a similar ilk while in OKC? Can't remember the name...LOTS of records...baby raccoon in a cage...

Trip Maker, Monday, 28 January 2013 04:19 (eleven years ago) link

Yep though raccoon isn't quite a baby anymore. I wanted to buy so many records there, but they weren't exactly priced to move, sort of above market price. Nice condition of almost everything in the store, so maybe it would've been worth it to buy that minty Easybeats for $75? Forgot what the place was called too.

His prices do kind of suck.

picked these up in wellington during a stay last week and blew my record buying budget in the first shop i walked into:

joe heaney - come all ye gallant irishmen (mid seventies recording in gaelic and english on philo)
elizabeth cotten - vol.3 when i'm gone (reissue, first cotten i've heard and now i really want to check out what she does with a banjo)
art ensemble of chicago - among the people (nice live recording from 1980)
motihar/sathe/thakur/schweizer/trepte/neumeier/schoof/wilen - jazz meets india (free jazz colliding with classical indian music from 1967, opened it up to find it's even signed by mani neumeier!)
alfred harth - this earth! (eighties ecm release with paul bley, maggie nichols, barre phillips and trilok gurtu, closer to the art song type stuff i've heard him doing with heiner goebbels than the more "out" just music lp)
welfare state/lol coxhill - s/t (after a first listen: awesome!)

and in other news, i had a look through the 20 or so records belonging to the person i was staying with and hidden among the uriah heap and steeleye span records was a copy of what seems to be the rarest of the rare vertigo releases by a very prog looking band called dr z which probably hasn't been played in upwards of thirty years and according to popsike can go for crazy money (and after listening to a track on youtube, it doesn't seem to be for its musical worth), so yeah thought it was a good idea to let her know what she has on her hands so it doesn't end up in a dumpster or similar

no lime tangier, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 12:26 (eleven years ago) link

i got that lol/welfare state last week too!!!

69, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:18 (eleven years ago) link

That is the responsible thing to do, yes.

Some 30 years ago, someone I used to know used to 'melt' up some of the albums his flatmate owned (with his collusion), I said whoa what? and he was 'yeah, but they were all hippie crap, and JJ hated them too", into Flowerpots. I said "yeah, but they're probably worth a fortune, or will be!"

Now, I fully realise not every album on the Deram label circa 1971 is worth money. But.

Mark G, Thursday, 31 January 2013 12:20 (eleven years ago) link

bought punk stuff and put all the crappy stuff out in the store and kept all the good stuff. hahahaha! not entirely true. i put some good stuff out. the troo kult punk stuff will go on ebay. cuZ some of it is too specialized to sell here. just don't judge me too harshly with some of these. i've been a fan of pre-scary skrewdriver for years and always wanted these. hey, i don't own any burzum albums. wait, i do actually own a burzum album...

the oppressed - oi!oi! music! (oppressed) (one of my favorite records of the 80's and i already have it but you never know when you might need a backup...)

slaughter and the dogs - do it dog style (damaged goods) (nice white vinyl repress and i gave up on finding a u.k. decca copy for cheap...)

the infas - sound and fury (panache) (love infa riot and i swear i'm not kidding when i say parts of this album remind me of youth brigade's sound and fury album.)

the anti nowhere league - the perfect crime (gwr) (i might be the only person who actually likes post-yob punk goth pomp ANL. but i liked goth pomp damned records too.)

outcasts - blood and thunder (new rose)

blitz - new age 12 inch (future records)

the last resort - a way of life - skinhead anthems (captain oi!)

james t. pursey - revenge is not the password (turbo)

sham 69 - shams last stand (link) (so amazing...)

the mob - let the tribe increase (lazy dog) (awesome 2xlp comp. so great.)

anti-pasti - caution in the wind (rondelet) (i'd put this in the store, but nobody would buy it. so i'll take it home.)

cockney rejects - the wild ones (a.k.a.) (i may already own this...)

stosstrupp - wie lanf noch... (tough independent) (rock-o-rama repress i think? amazing early 80's stuff)

cotzbrocken - jeden das seine... (rock-o-rama) (original pressing from 1981. just so demented i have to keep it.)

v/a - united skins (boots & braces) ( i know i know but again pre-scary and the other stuff on here is amazing)

cockney rejects - lethal (roadracer) (love this album don't care what anyone says)

skrewdriver - all skrewed up (chiswick) (i know i know but don't blame the rest of the original line-up! that acoustic guitar intro! near mint original pressing! such a great album. what can i say?)

4skins - a few 4 skins more - volume 1 (link) (2 album set and i have both albums already and yes i really love 4skins)

the accursed - laughing at you... (wreck 'em) (from 1984. again, so demented. they were inspired.)

oi polloi - fuaim catha (skuld releases)

skrewdriver - back with a bang! 12 inch (boots & braces) (i know i know but this is one of the greatest sounding punk 12 inches ever made. also pre-scary. i mean, i still want the two chiswick 45s too...and then that's it for me and this band.)

the wall - daytripper (no future) (from 1982. nobody would buy this either. so i will give it a loving home.)

scott seward, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:36 (eleven years ago) link

maddeningly, I will have to buy the Mob 2LP reissue at some point even though I have everything on it except the No Doves Fly Here 7", cuz it costs more than the reissued 2LP.

The Whatnauts - Introducing... (Stang)

I have been tracking this down forever. Found recently at a very reasonable price in pristine condition. So, so psyched. And the jackets worn on the album cover are most excellent.

Sticker, and some shrink intact. It's only February, but quite possibly my big score of 2013.

Playoff Starts Here (san lazaro), Saturday, 2 February 2013 04:54 (eleven years ago) link

I swear there's only one guy left in Toronto who's worth a damn: a flea market shop that mostly sells CDs and DVDs, but in the past year has been keeping a couple of hundred records out. Everything's in excellent shape, and he prices stuff like it's 1980--not because he's clueless, he knows a lot about music, but stuff is priced to sell, not sit there. I got Springsteen's debut for $5 (I'm not even a casual fan--haven't bought a Springsteen record since Tunnel of Love) and Stephen Stills' second for $6 today. What was hard was leaving behind two things I already have: the New York Dolls second for $7 and Neil's On the Beach for $5, both with original inner sleeves.

clemenza, Saturday, 2 February 2013 18:53 (eleven years ago) link

Any of you guys like Happy the Man? Found a copy of their first album today for a dollar at the swap meet. Couple of pieces I like so far on Side One.

So the "sticker" is actually part of the cover art. I was worried that this might indicate bootleg/repress, but I checked an old Moments record and it too has the fake sticker. Must have been a Stang Records marketing decision for early 70s releases. So no bootleg, at least I hope that's the case. Far as discogs indicated there is only one (Japanese from 1985) and the run-out on mine matches the orginal.

Record collector nonsense aside, Introducing The Whatnauts is fantastic. I've listened to the B-side like ten times in a row.

Happy and Artie Traum - S/T
Steve Reid - Nova

Brian, Saturday, 9 February 2013 17:07 (eleven years ago) link

Wow, some cool punk finds there Scott. I have Oi! Oi! Music on CD but would like to get it on vinyl one day. FYI, though, Back With A Bang is not by the pre-scary version of Skrewdriver... it's their first single post-reformation.

After lamenting that there were no record shops in my area since HMV and crappy local indie shop closed down, discovered an indoor market in Wood St next stop along from where I live in Walthamstow that has several record shops in it! One of which has LOADS of insanely rare punk/DIY records, loads of Messthetics type stuff, rare Italian HC etc. The prices are reasonable for what they are but mostly a bit out of my price range.

Here's what I've bought recently:

monroes - what do all the people know 7"
bleach boys - stocking clad nazi death squad bitches 12" (love this! been looking for not-insane priced copy for years and then this went up on Ebay for £20 and nobody else bid on it for some reason. It's in great condition as well!)
crusaders - street life 7"
booker t & the MG's - green onions 7"
dry heaves - shoot yourself LP
va - sent from coventry LP
electric vomit - no end 7"
MDC - millions of dead cops LP (UK pressing)
FUK - FUK LP
cramps - smell of female LP
lotus fucker - lotus fucker LP
electro hippies - the only good punk… is a dead one LP
wreckless eric - whole wide world 7"
damned - love song 7" (already have this but my copy is fucked and has horrible surface noise. this one's got a different sleeve and was only £1)
modern eon - euthenics 7"
undertones - jimmy jimmy 7"
zounds - can't cheat karma 7" (good price on this one! bit dirty though)
7 seconds - the crew LP
punishment of luxury - laughing academy LP

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 9 February 2013 18:27 (eleven years ago) link

i would think that oi! oi! music would be easy to find where you are. its one of the easier oi albums to find in the states, actually. i honestly don't even know what they sell for these days. and yeah i know its new-lineup skrewdriver but still not scary lyrically. i don't know what the actual cut-off point is. same with the comp i got on boots & braces. the 2 skrewdriver songs on there are just oi! anthems and not racist in nature.

scott seward, Saturday, 9 February 2013 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

do you have the modern eon LP? i like that one.

scott seward, Saturday, 9 February 2013 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

but yeah chiswick era a whole other thing obviously.

scott seward, Saturday, 9 February 2013 19:49 (eleven years ago) link

I think that band are banned from being sold on ebay, I have seen a couple ads for Chiswick recs listed under titles only.

Handy tip, there

Mark G, Monday, 11 February 2013 08:31 (eleven years ago) link

I only have the Modern Eon LP on mp3. It is good though.

Re: Back With A Bang again, the lyrics aren't "racist" as such, but there is this bit which is at least a dog whistle given where they went on their next single (which was White Power...):

Being patriotic's not the fashion so they say
To fly your country's flag's a crime

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Monday, 11 February 2013 10:24 (eleven years ago) link

people sell the bad stuff using his initials sometimes. i'm keeping the stuff i got. wouldn't put them online.

the sound of that 12 inch though...can't express how friggin' amazing the drums and bass sound on it.

patriotism i can handle. and if you like oi you'll get some of that. was listening to the upstarts yesterday and reminded how much i like their song "england" which i guess at the time didn't go over so well with some people.

scott seward, Monday, 11 February 2013 14:58 (eleven years ago) link

This public school near me has a weekly fleamarket/thrift sale every weekend and people usually have some records out but I hardly ever find anything if I stop to browse .... yesterday I flipped through some stuff and found Jean-Jacques Perrey's "Moog Indigo" and Perrey & Kingsley's "The In Sound From Way Out." 15 bucks for both. I was pretty psyched, never seen Moog Indigo except as a 30-dollar record on some store's wall. Went home and immediately listened to "E.V.A." real loud.

You are right. Mensii did lots of interviews denying any racist connotations, and this was before right-wing skinhead bands became a 'thing' as such.

checked out Black Gold Records in Carroll Gardens BK last night (shopping around for my new go-to spot, Academy was a hike for me to get to from home anyway so fuck 'em)

it was ... just ok. all used stuff so kind of a crapshoot. think I'll just check their blog and if they post about buying a cool collection I'll swing by. they had a lot of obscure punk and alt-rock but mostly not the kind I'm looking for.

I got a Whatnauts 'Help Is On the Way' 12" and Yura Yura Teikoku 'Soft Death'/'Robot Deshita' remixes 12".

traded a guy my wilburn burchette 'occult concert' for these --
richard crandell - in the flower of our youth (orig)
klaus schulze - timewind
fields ward LP on rounder
timothy & ms. pickens w/ natural act.

i like the the burchette, but i never listened to it. and it wasn't selling on discogs, even when i marked it down a bit. wanted the timothy & ms. pickens for a while. it's not the most consistent record in the world and there is some definite melodrama & oversinging going on, but i'm glad to have it. timewind cuz i was kinda missing the klaus schultze records i used to have.. i never had timewind. but i should hafe kept X and Mirage. I don't even remember when I sold them, but they must have gone at some pt cuz they ain't there anymore.

This couple were really innaresting. They buy lps, but only to sell them. All they listen to at home is 45s. Haha I learned yesterday that C00per Cr4in played synth in Follakzoid at the Mercury Lounge show. He did sound at their gig with Psychic Ills at the Empty Bottle in Chicago and hit it off with them. Their synth dude had to get back home, so they asked Coop if he could help out. They flew him out just for the one show. He said it went really well, though. I'm sure a collaboration is on the horizon at some point.

Digging Follakzoid and HolyDrug Couple fwiw.

Trip Maker, Monday, 25 March 2013 16:11 (eleven years ago) link

ian, nice find on that chris smither. it's a surprisingly great album for being mostly covers in the mid-80s, and it's also super tough to find in the wild. one of the few legitimately good records on adelphi. do you dig that rockin foo, though? i wanted to but the vox rub me the wrong way.

moe handy, Monday, 25 March 2013 16:30 (eleven years ago) link

There are plenty of good records on Adelphi! Well, at least all the Suni McGrath records, and tbe Gerry Goffin double, and Patrick Sky's dirty record. and I like the Sam Firk too.
Rockin' Foo is okay, for a buck I can't go wrong. Also, no one wants to buy that record so I may as well hold on to it.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Monday, 25 March 2013 16:37 (eleven years ago) link

do you fuck w. Jack Hardy, Moe?
Even his eighties records are pretty good I think. Some people peg him as working in the Leonard Cohen style, and I guess he does fall in that school of songwriting about characters/places. Hell of a voice imo, and a great songwriter.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Monday, 25 March 2013 16:40 (eleven years ago) link

re: adelphi, yeah, fair enough... i guess my problem is that i only ever see the endless garbage hippie string band dreck.

re: hardy, i have only ever seen that first one talked about by klausman, i think. or maybe you? i got the impression that copies turned up in NYC fairly regularly but i've definitely never seen one on the west coast. it sure looks up my alley. will happily trade you for your next double of any of his.

Digging Follakzoid and HolyDrug Couple fwiw.

slim pickings of late:

holy modal rounders - good taste is timeless (sundazed reissue)
john fahey - the transfiguration of blind joe death (transatlantic issue, so very good)
sir douglas quintet - best of (early eighties takoma release, really like some of the stuff on here, so going to have to explore their releases some more)
les percussions de strasbourg - americana (compositions by varèse, chávez & cage, nz press, so no nice shiny silver prospective 21e siècle cover, oh well!)

no lime tangier, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 10:11 (eleven years ago) link

Does that Fahey come with the book? I found the same copy at an antique store but it was missing that :(

i actually scored that fahey x2 (sold the more knackered copy to my brother at a slight profit), and (as above) no books, though you can read the liners on johnfahey.org (written by a pre-canned heat al wilson, apparently).

bought a ton of 45s today. couple thousand? maybe 3000. picking up the rest next week. sight unseen! i love 45s. and i don't even collect 45s. but i really love them. i love looking at them. i love playing them. i love selling them. guy i have bought from in the past is moving to florida and needs to get rid of stuff. i called his brother last year - i've bought stuff from his brother before too. he's a nice guy. they both are. they used to be pro party deejays in the late 70's and on into the 80's. - and said hey got anymore records and how about your brother? good timing. i put the bug in his ear. glad he didn't call any of the sharks where they live. they are sharky around there. anyway, he ended up with some radio station's 45s - a goodly amount anyway - and i love them. not all of them. but i love enough of them. almost all 60's and early 70's. rock and soul and pop. all over the place. i have a serious love for 60's rca promo 45s. and warner brothers too. oh heck i love them all. white label sugar magnolia is a beautiful thing.

also got a couple of dozen 50's R&B 78s in various conditions along with the 45s. and some decent LPs. and apparently the mother of all elvis LP collections. we'll see when i get over there next week. and 45 racks! he has a ton of sports stuff that i have no interest in. like, a million baseball cards and all that.

finally snagged a copy of Alice Coltrane's Journey in Satchidananda.

From the liner notes in the gatefold: "Anyone listening to this selection should try to envision himself floating on an ocean of Satchidanandadaji's love, which is literally carrying countless devotees across the vicissitudes and stormy blasts of life to the other shore."

will do alice!

went to a not very exciting record show in connecticut with maria and the kids. we were gonna sell there but then decided not to. we would have done well cuz it wasn't very exciting and my shiny goods would have stood out from the dusty boxes of unpriced stuff that a lot of lazy dudes had. i got tons of cheap stuff for the store though. and lots of nice - mostly 70's jazz - stuff for me. but most importantly i got a PRISTINE unplayed promo copy of Bongo Rock - still in the shrink! - for 40 bucks. nobody else was gonna buy it. i don't think. i couldn't resist. nicest copy ever. gonna keep it. most i've spent on a record in a while. but some things are essential to own. i bought a lot of the jazz i'm keeping from the same guy. he had great prices and nice stuff. my friend andy was there and i got some good stuff from him too. most stuff there though was either trashy trash or priced dumbly. or not worth getting at any price. but i can always manage to find cool stuff. i would have cleaned up there though. couldn't help thinking that the whole time i was there...

Went through probably 500 records in the back of a thrift in DC on Saturday am, had six for the guy who got cute on pricing (wanted $2 each, despite the fact I had a bunch of singles) -- coughed up $2 per for one 12" (Leroy Smart, 100% of Love) and one LP (West Indian Record Mart presents Reggae Explosion) and left the rest on the counter.

DC is rough for thrifts, I hear crazy stories from estate sales but don't have a car.

there's a track on the chuck hammer album called "Guitolocaust" where he plays 9 guitars. that's all you really need to know. amazing homemade blast of a record.

went to Other Music for the first time in a long time and picked up some indie-ish stuff, mostly went to get the Kurt Vile record that came out yesterday but couldn't stop myself from leaving with a stack

Kurt Vile - Walkin on a Pretty Daze (I got the regular version on black vinyl ... there's a deluxe on blue vinyl with a different cover and some Espo stickers that you're supposed to use to customize the cover ... I decided that wasn't worth six bucks to me)

Wild Yaks - Million Years (really into these guys' drunk singalong vibe)

Merchandise - Children of Desire (guess they re-pressed this? I've had the free MP3s off their site for a while but the vinyl was sold out)

Maxmillion Dunbar - House of Woo (on RVNG, from half of Beautiful Swimmers, fresh sounding retro-house-music)

Moon Duo - Mazes (was in the used bin, probably my fave Wooden Shjips related record)

Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold (already been listening to this a shitload on spotify)

dmr, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

Their used bin is growing considerably, which is good since I struggle with the idea of a record store sustaining itself merely with new product alone. Even if it is as popular as Other Music is.

i woulda given you a copy of that kurt vile album, dave! next time you want something on matador JUST ASK. especially since you are being gracious enough to host us for game of thrones.

last time i went to other music i got a sealed folk record out of the discount bin, i think i paid $5, and sold it for $40. i love their discount bin. it's always full of weird folk-rock obscurities. thanks klausman.

Their used bin is growing considerably

yeah seems like they've rearranged things a bit. I can't remember what used to be on the left side where all those used records (and new electronic records) are now. more CDs I guess.

they were playing that new Charles Bradley record on Daptone in the store and that was sounding good too. think they only had the CD on it though. or else I looked in the wrong place.

dmr, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 17:21 (eleven years ago) link

Yes it used to be all CDs there! Smart of them to adapt. Much better margins than $2-$3 per $16.99 CD sale.

Evan, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 17:50 (eleven years ago) link

hanging and playing 45s with terry adams at the store made my day today. his knowledge is vast.

scott seward, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 20:07 (eleven years ago) link

weekend trip to the Oregon coast and thrift store hunting yielded ten mint classical LPs (mostly on the Angel label), three Egyptian 45's (not so great), and seven mint condition Brazilian tropicalia 45s from 1970 (Veloso, Jobim, others I don't know) which are obv awesome. today I scored a super nice copy of ALice Coltrane's A Monastic Trio, life is good.

jay bolotin is sick. nice find.

i came across a pretty sweet batch of funk/soul/jazz today at the marysville flea (near my wife's hometown, i go at least 10 times a year and buy records maybe a quarter of the time. shit, there's actually records there maybe only 50% of the time.). if i hadn't bought these today - and suggested to the seller to get the rest of their LPs out of the sun - they would have been warped by the first sunday in may.

this was the sonic highlight:

and this was the monetary highlight:

infinity - spread the word (doo doo oakland modern gospel that still fetches some bank, thankfully)
buncha major label boogie stuff i can't remember now

bobby hutcherson - san francisco
marion brown - duets
some sealed eddie palmieri lp

azar lawrence - summer solstice

the fact that i found all these in marysville is still kinda blowing my mind.

i am having kind of a similar thing happen. people ask me all the time why i still go to thrift stores, and if i ever find things etc, and the answer is for like days like today --

8 conlon nancarrow LPs, two david hykes, george crumb, elliott carter, some private new age piano things that rule, sealed CRI titles, two steve roach records, henry cowell shit, sealed windham hill stupidness. love it!

had fun with my friends at the flywheel record fair in Easthampton today. saw lots of people i like. i like being on the front steps of the building. outside. next to my pal andy. brought my boombox and played lots of 80's metal and miami bass and indian classical tapes. so glad i did that. nobody ever brings tunes. traded with people which was nice and which meant i didn't spend a ton of cash. spent about 150 bucks. after i paid for my table i made a nice profit. i sold records to 33 people which is almost the speed of a long-playing record. here's some stuff i brought home. keeping a bunch of it. got some stuff for the store, but mostly i shopped for me today.

scott, i dig that brush arbor LP. they also have an earlier private record under a different name that is reallllly good. the group is fool's gold and the LP is called kentucky faith. highly recommended.
http://www.theancientstar-song.com/2010/03/kentucky-faith/

coincidentally i just picked up a marj snyder LP i'd never seen before (that lady has a shitload of LPs) and brush arbor is the backing band. haven't spun it yet, though.

i bought close to 50 records yesterday from paul major. still going through them. some will be sold and some will be kept. so far the keepers are these --

duster bennet - justa duster (used to own this -- one song i REALLY Like and then some average-to-good whiteboy blues)
alan james eastwood s/t (a lilllll produced but the songs are good)
billy roberts & grits - thoughts of california (obscure rural rock)
VALDY s/t (country rock, cover is a photo of the mans head growing out of a tree.)
marian henderson - cameo (raer aussie acid volk)
2x later albums by medicine head. these are not as good as their best stuff (the "dark side of the moon" album imo) but still have a cpl songs that are good. not worth selling really, no one cares.

alllllso keepers i forgot to mention - both dayle stanley albums. i had the first one but this copy is nicer... apparently "after the snow" is super raer? sells for money anyway. this copy is pretty scuffy and noisy but it's better than paying a lot of money for something i'll only listen to once every 5 years..

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Thursday, 23 May 2013 23:58 (eleven years ago) link

lol apparently sometimes the dayle stanley rekkerd sells for $20 and sometimes for $100... weird. nothing in the middle.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Friday, 24 May 2013 00:10 (eleven years ago) link

i feel like my senses are off. i don't like most of these so far:

Tight Fit - The Lion Sleeps Tonight / Rhythm, Movement, and Dancing
The Quick - To Prove My Love / Rhythm of the Jungle
Leisure Process - Cashflow / The Emigré 2
Fun Fun - Happy Station
Grace Jones - The Apple Stretching / Nipple To The Bottle
Human League - The Lebanon / Thirteen
Alla Pugacheva - How disturbing is this way
The Tarney / Spencer Band - Three's A Crowd
Ian Matthews - Stealin' Home
Fletch OST
Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick
The Untouchables - Dance Party
Catspaw - Emerald Web
The Screaming Blue Messiahs - Totally Religious
Belt Junior High School Ninth Grade Mixed Choruses And Choraleers & Seventh And Eighth Grade Chorus - Pheb And Zipp (With A Little Help From Their Friends)
John Wayne - America, Why I Love Her
Ian Thomas Band - Goodnight Mrs. Calabash
4 Out Of 5 Doctors - s/t

I feel like something's off, I don't really like a lot of these so far. For example, The Untouchables - I was pretty excited about this one, I figured Stiff Records, Jerry Dammers, this has to be good. It actually blows. And The Quick - I got "Zulu" earlier this month, and it's great, but this other single is just not my thing right now.

The Bundt record for 2 euros?! I'd be pretty pleased too!
How's the Lakomy? Love his Das Geheime Leben album.

willem, Monday, 27 May 2013 08:39 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah.. the vinyl is near mint, the only problem with the sleeve is there's a some scuffing on the spine... Not that i'm planning on selling it..

The Lakomy is not as good as Das Geheime Leben, there's some great abstract/abrasive electronics at the beginning of side one, and the drum machines are great, but there's a little bit too much cheesy chord action for my taste...

I've been buying lots of lounge records, private soft rock records and odd vanity records. I'm going to list them here soon, or maybe just take photos of them, some really beautiful covers.

I like all of them, some only have a few really great songs, but those few songs make the record for me. Then again I'm a big fan of Bread and Ambrosia. I'm recording a mix of soft rock/ blue eyed soul rock that I'm almost finished with.

Excellent shape all:

Soft Machine -- Third ($10)
Moody Blues -- Days of Future Passed (Deram original--$7)
Intruders -- Save the Children ($5)
First Choice -- Armed and Extremely Dangerous ($5)

The Moody Blues is sort of silly, as I expect there won't be anything of interest beyond the two hits. But I've never owned it, and the original-pressing clinched it.

clemenza, Sunday, 7 July 2013 17:33 (eleven years ago) link

moody blues are great and underrated by hipsters of today imo

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Sunday, 7 July 2013 17:39 (eleven years ago) link

I like a few of the early '70s hits, love the Timothy Leary song, love "Tuesday Afternoon." I just meant that my sense of Days was always that it was a lot of orchestral bombast. (Passed on a $4 copy of the LP with "Go Now"...if it's still there next week, I'll relent.)

clemenza, Sunday, 7 July 2013 17:43 (eleven years ago) link

FYI: the two 70's Justin Hayward solo albums - Blue Jays and Songwriter - are great and should be beloved by hip people everywhere and you can get them for nothing at used record stores.

Days of Future Passed is the first record I noticed my dad playing when I was a little kid, probably 4. I vividly remember laying on the floor and listening to night in white satin and being transported. I think Emotional Rescue was the next record my dad played that I used to ask him to play a lot.

JacobSanders, Monday, 8 July 2013 00:11 (eleven years ago) link

"I'll Always Love My Mama" is really nice on that Intruders album.

timellison, Monday, 8 July 2013 00:32 (eleven years ago) link

my dad has a whole bunch of Moody Blues records, I used to vibe hard on the covers of In Search of the Lost Chord and Every Good Boy Deserves Favour. In Search of the Lost Chord has some jams, I kinda like Ride My See-Saw.

brb, gonna change my Facebook cover image to ELP's Tarkus.

dmr, Monday, 8 July 2013 19:05 (eleven years ago) link

Another good reason to own an original pressing of Days of Future Passed: the album's master tapes were damaged not long after and every reissue sold since 1978, even on vinyl, has been a remix with significant changes. Some of the original vocals and orchestral parts have been permanently lost.

I meant to write that I left behind a bunch of late 70's funky jazz and prog records. It was odd finding those records at that goodwill. they only had a few records out and I asked the lady if they happen to have more records and she left me look at these tubs of records some guy had brought in. Lots of soft machine, Hawkwind, Mountain. I almost bought everything, but I'm trying very hard to scale back my record buying. She said he told her he's going to bring more in this week so we'll see.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 23:57 (eleven years ago) link

playboy is the worst label of all-time. second is wooden nickel. like, in terms of sheer overwhelming percentage of absolute garbage, i don't think any other major labels of the 60s/70s come close.

if anyone out there likes seriously wailing heavy funk rock with strong female vocals a la lynn carey, this album is for you.

but maybe nobody here needs that in their life.

Found a copy of the Little Sister 45 that I didn't have. The Sly Stone-produced group - they had two 45s. "You're the One" is the one I just got - I had the other one.

There are some different versions. There's a "You're the One" single that has part two of the song on the flip. The other one I've got is "Somebody's Watching You"/"Stanga," which is really good.

i bought a bunch of stuff in rhode island. mostly to sell at the next flea market & rekkerd fair, with a few ebayable items.

Is there another record fair on the horizon? I've been kind of fizzled out on buying records lately... I guess that is fine because my budget has been going into fun weekend trips all summer.

I did happen to find Giant Sand - Long Stem Rant for $3 recently.

scott seward, Thursday, 8 August 2013 03:15 (eleven years ago) link

we took a trip to beantown today - or cambridge anyway - to buy CDs from an awesome ilxor and i stopped in cheapo records. they have a lot of, uh, stuff...they definitely have HUNDREDS of dollar records that i own priced at 5 or 6 bucks. and they have this HUGE section in the back devoted to ancient bear family box sets! very strange. the prices are ancient too. the whole back room is filled with old sealed budget bin records. kinda cool. i got three henry cow records sealed. original pressings. 10 bucks each. they had more if you are ever in the area. seemed like a good deal to me. anyway, i didn't get out of there crushed by the weight of my purchases. but i found enough skot stuff to keep me happy. spent a hundred bucks total and 30 of that was henry cow action.

marti shannon - you were on my mind (rca victor - 1966) (couldn't resist the cover. so beautiful. the lettering, marti, her pose, everything.)

those x-cleavers - cult statis (permanent records - 1987) (wisconsin weirdos. i have this on tape.)

soft machine - alive & well - recorded in paris (harvest - 1978)

rabindra - all i see is you (takoma) (my pal doug decker engineering and working his buchla magic!)

paul jones - crucifix in a horseshoe (london) (was happy to get this for five bucks. vertigo copies sell for $$$ and i never see them anyway. needed it for my thomas jefferson kaye collection.)

mick greenwood - living game (decca) (five bucks. i own it, maybe i'll gift it to someone.)

country - s/t (clean records - 1971) (couldn't remember if i had this or not.)

keith christmas - brighter day (manticore - 1975)

country coalition - s/t (bluesway) (sealed copy for five bucks.)

johnny melfi - johnnymelfi's sun...sun...sun...album (pyramid - 1977)

thomas & richard frost - s/t (uni - 1972)

babe ruth - amar cabballero (harvest)

atlantis - get on board (vertigo - 1975)

dallas county - s/t (enterprise)

morganmasondowns - s/t (roulette) (another one i was really happy to get for five bucks. i never see this record. my kinda stuff. most of the stuff i got had obviously been in the store a LONG time. old price stickers on top of even older price stickers. its the final markdown. god only knows how long those henry cow records had been there. all that sealed stuff looked like it had lived back there for years. maybe they started out with 50 henry cows each.)

scott seward, Monday, 12 August 2013 00:47 (eleven years ago) link

i mean they aren't really big on "condition" there but i'm sure i could have found more bargains if i had dug longer. they had big dance 12 inch and rap 12 inch sections but i hardly ever pay real world prices for 12 inches. tons of boxes of 45s under the counters that i wasn't gonna bother going through. if i had hours to kill maybe i would have. the new arrivals section didn't really have anything for me. some good funky/jazzy stuff but nothing i needed to spend 10 or 15 bucks on.

someone came in talking about the goodwill store and soul records and maria and the kids went there and maria said a record dude was buying up tons of stuff there so i guess i missed the real score action by a block today.

This is true.

Reminds me I should message my friend and tell him because he insisted it was unplayable. He didn't really know what it was, I think he got it in a job lot of records he was trying to sell off on ebay. It's not rare at all but he could've probably get a fiver for it in that condition. I mean obv he gave it me for doing him a favour but he's on disability so I wouldn't've taken it if I thought it was worth any money. And I have it on CD already anyway but I'm def happy to have it on vinyl.

tbh im a bit overwhelmed at the crates in the living room! im starting w the things i KNOW I WANT -- shamek farrah & folks right now, which is just beautiful. scott seskind was in my 3rd round of picks, haha. it went 115 LPs grabbed initally, then 35 more when i realized the thrift annie and i were in was way less interesting than going back, and then 9 when our breakfast took too long, haha.

im feeling like i may keep a bunch of these? or just kinda go slow w them...

this was a "round three" grab haha

i wouldn't have been able to leave and then come back! oh man that would have driven me insane. let alone come back twice! such a casual dude you are, pete. i need to learn your zen methods.

scott seward, Monday, 26 August 2013 16:21 (eleven years ago) link

re: leaving things, it's a bit complicated. my intent was to buy EVERYTHING if i found enough good things, and i certainly met that rubric, and the price wouldve been right (probably $1000 for the 5-6K records that were there if the volume pricing continued?).

BUT. i was 5hr from home and shipping it would have been really time-consuming, and putting up all the $$$ would have been a bit annoying for a few months, and compelled me to hustle hard to sell things immediately. also, it was a 100th birthday university party, and it felt a little harsh to buy everything on this festival day while older locals were stoked about finding stuff. i like to think of myself as psychologically capable of buying everything in these circumstances, and let me emphasize that if it had been one or two fewer of those limiting factors, id have had a REALLY hard time not making an offer on everything. that said, all told, it was a little much.

so i left ummmm 4800 records? more context, though -- i looked at everything, and grabbed with all my knowledge, intuition, and interest. i do not doubt that i missed a few $$$ records, and more important, a few SICK records. but i mean -- im still a bit of a novice at this power-moves game. im sure as boomers un/willingly sell their collections over the next 20yr, ill get more shots at being ruthless :)

xxp to ian: it was credited to celestrial comm orch so i didnt notice it at first...
xp to scott: i appreciate it, and the balance bw craze and calm (WHICH IVE BEEN TOLD IS THE VERY CONCEPT OF SKILLFULLNESS THANK YOU ALAN SILVA) is pretty cruc to me

69, Monday, 26 August 2013 16:30 (eleven years ago) link

i'm getting better at letting things go. i have to get better at it. i can't buy everything. i'm really good at record shows now. i look for cheap stuff for the store, maybe some stuff for me, but i'm calm. i don't get caught up in the frenzy. there will always be more. that's my motto. and even if there isn't, i have plenty of great stuff to listen to. that's my other motto.

scott seward, Monday, 26 August 2013 16:36 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, id really like to keep lookin for records for my whole life!

69, Monday, 26 August 2013 16:37 (eleven years ago) link

it helps too that i'm totally happy finding cheap stuff that nobody wants except for me. i have endless fun with dollar and two dollar disco/rock/r&b/jazz/etc records. having said that, i would have completely lost my shit if i went to a sale like that. my heart would have been pounding. waxidermy dream sale.

scott seward, Monday, 26 August 2013 16:40 (eleven years ago) link

I walked away from a lot of record yesterday, but it was due to being in this hoarders junk shop. I spent more than an hour there in no AC and the dust was overbearing. There were records crammed in shelves, on the floor, beneath other books behind clothes. I found great stuff too like Cathy Young and a lot of local bar bands, and I didn't even break into the 45's because I was drenched in sweat and couldn't breath anymore. I might go back next weekend, it's 2 hours from here. Hoarders are crazy.

Found an O'Jays single on Imperial at the Swap Meet today. Didn't know when it was from - I have another O'Jays 45 that's on Bell. This one's even earlier. "Stand in for Love" from '66. Cool record. Also bought a 1971 single by a group called Odds 'n' Ends. Soul record on a label called Today Records with Thom Bell involvement.

I look through 78s so much and really rarely see any old-time folk/country/blues. I suppose it's because I'm in California.

Found these country 45s in really nice condition today for 25 cents each at the thrift store:

Charlie Louvin - "Think I'll Go Somewhere and Cry Myself to Sleep" ('65)
Webb Pierce - "The Man You Want Me to Be" ('70)

timellison, Tuesday, 3 September 2013 23:52 (eleven years ago) link

If I knew more about great old time folk/blues/country 78s I would look more because I loooove that sound. I just don't know enough about it to browse. Plus I rarely encounter any...

Evan, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 03:12 (eleven years ago) link

there are reaaallllly not many string band records outside of the south. i've found one ever in NY. moe handy has found a few in the bay area i think, but even there it's more post-war and western swing stuff than my fave jams.

ian, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 03:19 (eleven years ago) link

I hardly ever find country 78s, ever, it's always big band or easy vocal jazz. But I sometimes get discouraged while looking through stacks of 78s and give up. I always look for coral or king records and never see those labels. I love hillbilly bop and never find any.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 03:35 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I do run across probably later '40s and '50s country 78s a fair amount.

Too big and hip: only garbage remains

i'm going up to white plains today to look at some records.
if i get there early i might hit the salvation army and goodwill stores in town.
will be sure to report back my findings.

i expect: CSNY, Joan Baez, Fiddler On The Roof.

ian, Friday, 6 September 2013 14:02 (eleven years ago) link

aside: whenever i think of white plains, i think of the Hit Man stories by Lawrence Block. His broker lives in White Plains, in a big old white house with a nice front porch, perfect for sipping iced tea.

Mmmm... a good iced-tea-style-porch is paradise.

Evan, Friday, 6 September 2013 14:38 (eleven years ago) link

so is killing ppl for money, apparently.
i really like the Hit Man books cuz they make a big deal out of the collecting impulse -- the hit man (Keller) is also a stamp collector and he ruminates from time to time on its essential meaninglessness/weirdness of desire for rare things with no real function.

re: the 78 convo i missed the other day, the only time i found (well, tbh, my friend found them and texted me... i wasn't even there) pre-war string band shit in the bay was at the garage sale of r. crumb associates so that was a lucky fluke. pre-war hick and blues shit seems almost primarily a southern thing (maybe some chicago / mid-west for blues) which makes sense since most migration of southern folk happened during and after the war... that said, tons of great honky tonk and western swing and post-war blues 78s in cali...

Wasn't even going to so to the swap meet this morning, but I did and ended up with this stuff for seven dollars:

Loretta Lynn - You're Looking at Country ('72)
Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton - Just the Two of Us ('68)
Herman's Hermits - "There's a Kind of Hush" b/w "No Milk Today"
The Tornadoes - "Bustin' Surfboards" b/w "Beyond the Surf" ('62)
Bobby Powell - "That Little Girl of Mine" b/w "C.C. Rider" (Whit, '65)
Don (Soul Train) Campbell - "Campbell Lock" b/w "Campbell Lock (Instrumental)"
The Goodees - "Jilted" b/w "Love Is Here" (Hip, '68)

The Don Campbell one is a funk record. He was a Soul Train dancer who did a dance called the Lock.

The Goodees one is a knockout. Not on Youtube, unfortunately. Closest thing I could compare it to is maybe the Feminine Complex.

sacc trust album is in what i would consider VG shape on the B side and VG+ on the A side; there is what looks like a bit of groove wear on the last two tracks, some light scuffing etc. i can play it and give you more info if yer interested. cover has a bit of corner creasing and a punch hole.

what's the packaging on Nascimento like?

los blue jeans, Friday, 27 September 2013 03:40 (eleven years ago) link

The outer sleeve is a giant oval poster folded into six "squares." The inner sleeve folds, too, but there's no printing on it, and inside is:

- another inner sleeve with the record
- a seven inch
- several colored cards with printing on them about the songs

After you unfold it, folding it all back is like folding a map. It always wants to get fat.

bamcquern, Friday, 27 September 2013 04:22 (eleven years ago) link

oh boy i wish youd asked me before u spent money on oquisha paradox. i think that shit is a requisite mistake for all norcal records people to make.

I was trying to slow my roll a bit because I really just have too many records, but I broke the fast today. Stopped by Goodwill with the excuse of looking for some Halloween costume accessories, dug through the stacks, limited my pile to 9 records and was about to leave when I did a last-minute perimeter sweep. Saw the corner of a 70's Columbia logo in a cardboard box under a table, and ended up with another 90 45s.

It was mostly country, doo wop, 50's teen pop, stuff I know nothing about, so I bought all of the off label stuff I found and just found this in the stacks along with early Mickey Gilley and a few early canjun 45's. Still sorting through them.

There were a bunch of almost mint condition folk LPs at the thrift store. Couldn't just leave them sitting there. I actually thought I would flip them to one of the stores in town but the guy there didn't want them. So now I get to listen to them. Can't emphasize enough how beautiful these things are! Records look shiny and new, jackets incredible with almost no ringwear and great spines, original inserts, etc.

as a sidebar to calling Record Exchange a pretty decent store I will note that this Record Store Day nonsense is totally outta hand. (I know this has been griped about on other threads but I can't help myself.) they had racks and racks of ridiculous shit like a new pressing (or maybe it's the first time on vinyl, whatever) of Billy Bragg and Wilco's Mermaid Avenue for $39.99. Black Friday RSD Special Price!!

dmr, Monday, 2 December 2013 16:43 (eleven years ago) link

The larger label stuff for RSD are always catering to a crowd that probably isn't very interested in vinyl at all and for such silly prices.
For example I'm expecting to see a Hootie & The Blowfish 180 gram reissue for $42.99 at this point.

I don't remember seeing anything even slightly interesting personally on the Black Friday list this year. To be be fair to the whole concept there are usually at least a few neat items.

michael hurley 78rpm covering E.C. Ball's "Early Bird Always Gets The Worm."

ian, Tuesday, 3 December 2013 02:01 (eleven years ago) link

oh, i guess that cover is not on the 78... just on the new tribute comp.
still want the 78.

ian, Tuesday, 3 December 2013 02:02 (eleven years ago) link

last time i checked, the store where moe works has a copy. ill grab it for you if so!

69, Tuesday, 3 December 2013 17:25 (eleven years ago) link

yup, we still got one at $19.98 (UGH) but i would imagine you should be able to find this locally.

as for the billy bragg and wilco:
a. it is a great record, you're crazy
b. yes, the price is insane but the lacquers were cut by the best in the business and the vinyl was pressed at a plant in germany that is supposed to be #1 in the world. with that in mind it's not actually as outrageously priced as some of the other stuff that came out friday (like the grateful dead acoustic set that i really want but is also $40+ for a double lp)

anyway fuck a RSD release. the only other things i wanted (townes and gene clark) were just limited color pressings and will come out on black vinyl (hopefully at a more reasonable price) so i'll hold off...

moe handy, Tuesday, 3 December 2013 23:05 (eleven years ago) link

what were the guy & townes records? i'm so outta da record store loop. didn't even know the hurley was coming out til tompkins square posted abt it on facebook.

ian, Tuesday, 3 December 2013 23:51 (eleven years ago) link

fwiw I like the Wilco record and have had it on CD since it came out but I'm never gonna pay 40 bucks for something like that. "pressed at the world's top pressing plant" just doesn't mean anything to me ... maybe one day I'll be an audiophile like that but up to this point I'm just not.

dmr, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 16:30 (eleven years ago) link

really I guess my beef is somewhat with the price of new records in general, regular old double LPs are routinely 25 bucks now.

dmr, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

Hey Ian, there's an old warehouse here filled with junk and they have a crate of 78's, mostly still in sleeves. I almost just want the sleeves, labels like King, Coral, Vocalion, 4Star, and Columbia. Artist like Eddie Arnold and his Tennessee Plowboys, Lefty Frizzell, Hank Locklin, but there are a few odd ones, like artist with bagpipe accompaniment and whistling with string band. Some look unplayed, some are scuffed, and I don't know how much scuffing affects playback on 78's? They are a dollar each, are they worth buying? Or, would you want me to buy them for you? The guy said he would make a deal on the whole lot, probably $20?

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 16:50 (eleven years ago) link

@dmr. yeah, man, i'm right there with you re: not being an audiophile and not giving a shit about the plant but my point is that at least those wilco records legitimately cost more to manufacture than the other shit that's going for $30 single lps and $45 double lps or whatever.

moe handy, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 20:40 (eleven years ago) link

i'd buy em all for $20. it's hard to tell w/o knowing the names of the artists, but lefty is great, early hank locklin can be good etc. scuffing is not a big deal on 78s tbh.

ian, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 21:01 (eleven years ago) link

at least those wilco records legitimately cost more to manufacture than the other shit that's going for $30 single lps and $45 double lps or whatever

yeah I hear you. and I did not know about the particularities of the pressing so that was news to me.

Yep, I didn't know until I received the record that Pat Smear was on it, I've had mp3s of it for about 10 years, that's how long it's taken me to find a cheap copy of it.

So good! Band with twangy twelve-string guitar, versions of "A Man and a Woman," "Green Grass," "You Won't See Me," some Roberto Carlos songs. Version of "Black Is Black" that almost sounds like Booker T.

for some reason I have no lime tangier pegged as a New Zealander, but he might be Northeastern US.

stumbled across them via a south korean ebayer for a very reasonable sum ;-)

only time i've actually found any shirley in a shop was a reissue of sweet england early last decade after reading about her in the mid-nineties in the electric muse: folk into folk rock book (which i heartily recommend). still remember the wtf is this look from the guy when i took it to the counter.

Ok that's a relief! Congrats on finding them! I found reissues of Folk Roots, New Routes and No Roses in Barcelona a few years ago and it was unspeakably exciting.
