An all-time favorite!

Evan, Monday, 6 January 2014 21:54 (eleven years ago)

me too, used to have an Ajax vinyl copy that I traded in for a Guernica CD version probably in the late 90's, now I have it on LP again. I am kind of an Unrest completist, god help me.

sleeve, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 01:21 (eleven years ago)

they are made for completists!

nerve_pylon, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 02:48 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, I was one of those suckers that bought the Perfect Teeth 7" boxset reissue.

Evan, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 14:24 (eleven years ago)

was in a charity shop today rummaging through some mediocre classical records and a huge load of easy listening when a woman came through the door, dumped a box of records on the counter and then ran out. man at the desk just turned to me and said wanna look? so i picked up the following for one pound each:

comet gain - casino classics (fuck yeah!)
the knack - get the knack (white label)

There's a shop near here that I've drove by for years and you can see it's packed with stuff and I've wondered if there were records inside, well today I finally saw a car parked in front and there door was open so I stopped and the nice lady had boxes of records. She also has a storage unit with more records I'm going to look at this weekend. I found these for a dollar each!

timellison, Saturday, 18 January 2014 05:02 (eleven years ago)

o that explains it

just sayin, Saturday, 18 January 2014 09:42 (eleven years ago)

Long time since confession. Here's today's burden.

Ed Kelly Ensemble - Music from the Black Museum
Software - Electronic-Universe
Codona - on the spine it says "Collin Walcott/Don Cherry/Nana Vasconcelos," so maybe that's the title
Maceo Merriweather - Big Maceo Volume One
Little Brother Montgomery - Farro Street Jive (I'm just realizing this is electronically reprocessed stereo; I hope it still sounds good)
The Last Poets - This Is Madness (orig.)
various - Voice of the Computer
Gino Soccio - Face to Face (cheap dupe)
Leo Kottke - s/t?
Joh Abercrombie - Timeless
Elvin Jones - The Prime Element
Baby Boy Warren - s/t (I think this is sort of a boot, but it's a really nice boot. I guess it doesn't matter if the music is in the public domain.)
Lonnie Hewitt - Keepin' It Together
Le Quatour de Saxophones - Double Messieus
Charlie Rouse/Paul Quinchette - The Chase Is On
Horacee Arnold - Tales of the Exonerated Flea
Stomu Yamash'ta - the title is maybe Hans Werner Henze/Peter Maxwell Davies/Toru Takemitsu?
Nana vasconcelos - Saudades
Jon Appleton - The World Music Theatre of Jon Appleton
Percy Sledge - Any Day Now
Mary Lou Williams - Zoning (dupe, but it's so good that it's worth it just in case)
Muhal Richard Abrams - Things to Come from Those Now Gone
Mal Waldron - Plays the Blues
David Earle Johnson/Jan Hammer/John Abercrombie - The Midweek Blues
Jan Hammer - The First Seven Days
Roosevelt Sykes - Raining in My Heart
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - Special Occasion
Steve Lacy - Raps
Kool & the Gang - Jazz
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - What Love Has Joined Together
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - A Pocket Full of Miracles
Jackie Wilson - I Get the Sweetest Feeling
Elvin Jones - Genesis
Yusef Lateef - 10 Years Hence
Angela Davis - Soul and Soledad
The Salsoul Orchestra - Nice 'n' Naasty
Earth, Wind & Fire - Another Time

bamcquern, Monday, 20 January 2014 05:56 (eleven years ago)

oh, that's "Double Messieurs," obviously

bamcquern, Monday, 20 January 2014 05:57 (eleven years ago)

Codona - on the spine it says "Collin Walcott/Don Cherry/Nana Vasconcelos," so maybe that's the title

there are three of these, I think 2 & 3 are numbered

sleeve, Monday, 20 January 2014 16:54 (eleven years ago)

Ed Kelly Ensemble - Music from the Black Museum

GREAT RECORD

69, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:02 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, it's great, unostentatious, a lot of second coming of Monk stuff, but it has more surface noise than the look of it would suggest, so I'm thinking of returning it for credit. :(

bamcquern, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 20:51 (eleven years ago)

you should look for ED KELLY & FRIEND if you dont already have it. "FRIEND" is pharoah sanders, who was unable to appear in the title or front cover due to some arista issues?

69, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 22:12 (eleven years ago)

Jon Appleton - The World Music Theatre of Jon Appleton

^^^ great, weird record

ian, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 22:42 (eleven years ago)

what was your phrase, bryce, "John Oswald eat your heart out?"

^ enlightening post (sarahell), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 22:44 (eleven years ago)

That's me with the one-liners.

For anyone wondering about "electronically reprocessed Folkways records, I think they sound fine.

I don't have that Ed Kelly record, Pete. I'll keep a look out for it.

Monks - Black Monk Time

dmr, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 14:32 (eleven years ago)

^ good combination on those two!

nerve_pylon, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 14:49 (eleven years ago)

we have the monks record on the ipod at the beer store and so i have been listening to it way more than i have in years. great stuff tbh.

ian, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 17:50 (eleven years ago)

over the last week or so:

jack bruce - songs for a tailor
anthony moore - flying doesn't help
groundhogs - hogwash, solid
moby grape - 20 granite creek
pearls before swine - city of gold (only beautiful lies... to find now!)
cecil taylor - nefertiti, the beautiful one has come (arista freedom 2 lp version)
charles tolliver and music inc. - the ringer
bobby brown - prayers of a one man band

spotted the bobby brown in amongst a lot of op shop dross someone was selling, so made them an offer for it and it's crazy good. no idea how it ended up on these shores though.

no lime tangier, Sunday, 9 March 2014 12:17 (eleven years ago)

that is a score. bobby brown's great.

dmr, Sunday, 9 March 2014 14:49 (eleven years ago)

and so is 'Flying Doesn't Help'.

nerve_pylon, Sunday, 9 March 2014 15:39 (eleven years ago)

yeah that's a nice score, I don't think I've ever seen a copy of that.

sleeve, Sunday, 9 March 2014 15:50 (eleven years ago)

i'm going to have to give flying doesn't help some more plays since on first listen it didn't really hit me that hard except for a couple of tracks (the version of war is pretty great though).

i'm guessing the bobby brown lp was bought at one his shows since he's thanked them and added a couple of :-) :-) on the back. apparently he turned up in australia at some point, so i guess it's not out of the question he made it to nz as well (would be fascinating to know if he played any shows here too). whoever owned it before mustn't have listened to it much/at all cause it's absolutely pristine.

no lime tangier, Sunday, 9 March 2014 18:21 (eleven years ago)

that is such a weird part of his story! so intriguing...

sleeve, Sunday, 9 March 2014 18:40 (eleven years ago)

OK in a very weird and very pleasing development, I found my own copy of the Bobby Brown record yesterday... also with his writing on the back!

Best I can make out, it says:

"Love Bobby... these are my new ones... better than tapes... I hope that's OK... I don't have tapes of Axonda yet"

sleeve, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 00:19 (eleven years ago)

:-O that's awesome! you'd think drag city, light in the attic or someone would be all over these.

two weeks pass...

I haven't really been going out much because I've been trying to better deal with the stuff I already have. Couldn't help but hit up a couple spots when I was out doing errands though. Last three months' records:

Rafael Seijo con su Orquestra Charanga- La Pachanga Dance Tonite
Kenny Loggins- High Adventure (tried to justify buying this about three different ways and I'm going to settle on "hey, it's clean with a sticker on shrink)
Yodelin' Slim Clark - Cowboy Songs Vol II
Janis Joplin - I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!
Zoot Sims, Al Cohn & Phil Woods- Jazz Alive!: A Night at the Half Note
V/A - Jingle Bell Rock(a TIME/LIFE MUSIC "The Rock 'N' Roll Era" box set. Contains Mono!!! :) :) :) )
Richard Stoltzman- Begin Sweet World

Lionel Hampton - Silver Vibes

a lake full of ancient spices (los blue jeans), Sunday, 30 March 2014 01:54 (eleven years ago)

Boogarins - As Plantas Que Curam: cool current band from Brazil on Other Music's label, file next to Holydrug Couple and Os Mutantes.

Spike - Orange Cloud Nine: reissue/comp on Golf Channel of this early '80s dude from I think Germany?, pretty great, new wave balearic soft-rock, Ariel Pink vibe at times. word to max for the recommendation.

Dixie Cups - Going to the Chapel: no explanation needed!

69, Monday, 14 April 2014 18:35 (eleven years ago)

ran into a friend of mine at a gathering yesterday and he was like "oh, I found this weird record for a dollar at the brew fest", pulls out an original copy of this:

http://www.discogs.com/Intersystems-Free-Psychedelic-Poster-Inside/release/240216

like, the OG isn't even on Discogs. he thought it sucked, I advised him to flip it (or sell it to me for $10, lol)

sleeve, Monday, 14 April 2014 18:42 (eleven years ago)

you could probably get hmmmm...$800 or more for that at auction. maybe more. that's just a guess. it never ever ever comes up for sale.

scott seward, Monday, 14 April 2014 19:35 (eleven years ago)

it's missing the poster that (I think) originally came with it, and might have been VG- based on my brief once-over, but yeah still

thanks for the price check!

sun ra - the other side of the sun

no lime tangier, Thursday, 22 May 2014 03:45 (eleven years ago)

I picked up some Sun Ra last week too, on the "100th birthday" day I was at this vintage store near my apartment in Brooklyn that has a small but reasonably good selection of reissues (usually stuff like Numero Group, Soul Jazz etc) and lo and behold they had like 20 nice Sun Ra repressings for 10 bucks a pop. I got "Atlantis" and "We Travel the Spaceways."

dmr, Friday, 30 May 2014 15:16 (eleven years ago)

on more than one occasion i've had to repress my impulse to just grab all the sun ra reissues that are out there now. the one up there is from the late seventies which is an era i wasn't familiar with at all...

& my local record shop has recently acquired an amazing folk/string band/bluegrass/blues/cajun collection so:

a day in the mountains 1928
nashville: the early string bands vol. 1
old-time classics: a collection of mountain blues
hell broke loose in georgia: georgia fiddle bands 1927-1934
mississippi breakdown: traditional fiddle music of mississippi vol. 1
the blues roll on (7th vol. of the lomax/collins series of field recordings)
the watersons - s/t, for pence and spicy ale
martin carthy - sweet wivelsfield
martin carthy & dave swarbrick - byker hill
sweeney's men - reissue of the first lp (been looking for a copy of this for a long, long time!)
gay & terry woods - tender hooks
incredible string band - no ruinous feud
the albion band - lark rise to candleford
john kirkpatrick - plain capers: morris dance tunes from the cotswolds
john kirkpatrick & sue harris - among the many attractions at the show will be a really high class band

also ordered a copy of the reissue of anne briggs' hazards of love ep from topic

Got a sealed copy for $8 at a flea market. It looked a little suspicious at first--redone versions?--but it's a legitimate compilation that came out in '73, with "Love Is Strange" and three out of their seven other chart hits.

been meaning to revisit feats don't fail me now: long, long time since i last heard it, but remember it as being really good & le goudron is ace (don't think i've ever heard the flipside)

eagerly awaiting the arrival of the beefheart sun zoom spark box!

no lime tangier, Monday, 17 November 2014 15:59 (ten years ago)

Feats Don't Fail Me Now is all killer, no filler

Sun Zoom Spark box is useless to me since I have all those Spotlight Kid Sessions from DIME. Super disappointing that they left "Funeral Hill" off of that 4th disc. I guess if the remasters are really well done I might look for it used.

sleeve, Monday, 17 November 2014 16:09 (ten years ago)

Some cool stuff there sleeve, quite a few I'm coveting from over here (No Trend, Really Red, Poison Girls, would like to get the Damned and Wire on vinyl one day, just to begin with, and I'm sure the Dead C, Jad Fair, Slovenly etc are probably up my street too). I do have the Spizzoil 7" though.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Monday, 17 November 2014 16:10 (ten years ago)

take the toys from the boys will always be my fave poison girls song. on that EP.

also, dozen dead roses probably my fave no trend song.

scott seward, Monday, 17 November 2014 16:36 (ten years ago)

the dead c should be up everyone's street :-) have fond memories of seeing them play in port chalmers over the years.

never had decals on anything but cdr so that's the one i'm most hyped about hearing, also means i can retire my warped clear spot (so glad i pre-ordered this before the price doubled)

no lime tangier, Monday, 17 November 2014 16:37 (ten years ago)

Oh yeah I've seen the Dead C live and have several of their albums, just not that one.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Monday, 17 November 2014 16:39 (ten years ago)

mac from siltbreeze (r.i.p.) gave me a copy of clyma years ago. i played it once. and then years later i sold it. and that's my sad tale. i've never listened to dead c much. i'm not supposed to admit that. but there you have it. i listen to lots of other stuff though.

scott seward, Monday, 17 November 2014 16:50 (ten years ago)

what's on the 'tentative power' ep?

john wahey (NickB), Monday, 17 November 2014 16:54 (ten years ago)

the Xpressway "Hell Is Not Love"/"Bone" single, the Forced Exposure single, and a couple of other tracks iirc

sleeve, Monday, 17 November 2014 16:58 (ten years ago)

I really want Ba Da Bing to reissue Operation of The Sonne, that's the only other "classic" era one that I need

sleeve, Monday, 17 November 2014 16:58 (ten years ago)

oh, that FE single was great - it kind of spoilt the Dead C for me thereafter. that version of 'power' is terrific!

john wahey (NickB), Monday, 17 November 2014 17:10 (ten years ago)

i finally got a copy of monoshock's walk to the fire on vinyl. double vinyl. i always wanted that one. labelmates with my brother at the time. blackjack records.

scott seward, Monday, 17 November 2014 17:11 (ten years ago)

I wish I still had that, I think I sold it in the 90's

sleeve, Monday, 17 November 2014 17:12 (ten years ago)

speaking of noisy guitars...

scott seward, Monday, 17 November 2014 17:12 (ten years ago)

blackjack were the crew who put out liquorball amirite?

john wahey (NickB), Monday, 17 November 2014 17:12 (ten years ago)

yup

scott seward, Monday, 17 November 2014 17:13 (ten years ago)

the blackjack guy was in monoshock.

scott seward, Monday, 17 November 2014 17:16 (ten years ago)

I wish I still had that, I think I sold it in the 90's

yeah me too! all my underground 7"s gone in one big clear out for £££ (including a liquorball single on glow-in-the-dark vinyl which was just so good). kills me thinking about it :(

xp oh right that figures

john wahey (NickB), Monday, 17 November 2014 17:16 (ten years ago)

i think when they mastered the tentative power stuff it got slightly sped up in the process didn't it? i remember the guitars ended up sounding kind of balalaika like. got rid of mine since i already had most of it on 7" and clyma isn't too hard to find here. sometimes think operation of the sonne is my favourite dead c.

whoa! that's the super rare one, right? <3 <3 <3 hurley

no lime tangier, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 22:19 (ten years ago)

yep, I never ever see it

I have a homemade CDR of it that I bought from Hurley at a gig, but I suspect his ripping gear is not exactly high end. still pissed at Mississippi for reissuing it on 8-track only.

I also scored his first two 7" singles from the 90's recently, just a few things left on the wantlist
