hello

Bringing the mosh (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:29 (eleven years ago)

Excellent title imo

dan m, Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:32 (eleven years ago)

There is a lot of pressure riding on the title

Bringing the mosh (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:33 (eleven years ago)

let's all make sure neither the kings or hawks win the title

and an absurd amount of money for dave bolland, but i guess that's what it takes to get players to come to florida

mookieproof, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 17:10 (eleven years ago)

kind of feel like all hawks players' prices have inflated over the past few years, they're still trying to make the $ work with kane/toews

dan m, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 17:13 (eleven years ago)

bolland now has the same cap hit ($5.5m) as john tavares

mookieproof, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 17:15 (eleven years ago)

Bringing the mosh (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 18:57 (eleven years ago)

the flames just gave deryk engelland three years at $2.9m each

simply amazing

mookieproof, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 19:19 (eleven years ago)

Can you imagine if there was still no salary cap

Bringing the mosh (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 19:21 (eleven years ago)

Glad we have Boyle now. Our mission to get every player of the 2004 lightings at one point or another is going steady.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 19:30 (eleven years ago)

when i first saw it, i was like okay, engo at $1m/yr is whatever but why would you give him three years? and then mackenzie was like oh, the $2.9m is each year

xp meanwhile all the recent rangers are in tampa

Philadelphia Flyers star Claude Giroux arrested in Ottawa

Philadelphia Flyers star Claude Giroux spent the night in an Ottawa Police cell after an incident involving a police officer, sources tell the Sun.

Although few details were immediately available, a source said Giroux was arrested for repeatedly grabbing the buttocks of a male police officer. Alcohol is believed to have been involved.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 13:55 (eleven years ago)

I don't see the Avs regressing, really.

$10.5m average/season for both

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 17:06 (eleven years ago)

no complaints about those numbers

Bringing the mosh (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 9 July 2014 18:28 (eleven years ago)

speaking of which who's the worst signing so far? Bolland? Callahan? Gionta? Greene?

Bringing the mosh (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 9 July 2014 18:35 (eleven years ago)

engelland, then orpik or bolland

i mean you can think wishful thoughts about the latter two and the money's much greater, but engo has never been more than an absolutely marginal nhl player. for that the flames gave $2.8m x 3?

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 18:48 (eleven years ago)

also

In 2003-04, Jagr and Forsberg each made $11MM. Five guys will make more than that next year. Revenues have almost doubled.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 18:53 (eleven years ago)

We clearly need another lockout

Bringing the mosh (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 9 July 2014 19:14 (eleven years ago)

are the two mutually exclusive? we should try both

Bringing the mosh (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 9 July 2014 19:15 (eleven years ago)

ha! cmon yall should know how unions work. strike is player-initiated, lockout owner-initiated. there've been a lot of lockouts in sports recently bc owners are fleecing labor playing like theyre about to go to the poorhouse.

anaheim signed dany heatley for $1m/1yr

Brandon Dubinsky is worth 5.8M per year until he is 34

Bringing the mosh (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Saturday, 12 July 2014 13:51 (eleven years ago)

Would you argue that Dubinsky is worth 1/2 of either Kane or Toews

Bringing the mosh (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Saturday, 12 July 2014 13:52 (eleven years ago)

I understand the above comment is redic at face value. I may be guilty of not understanding nhl finances in the way I understand, say MLB finances. It just seems like 50 pts a year should not be worth 5.8m per. Also Dubinsky is not a "star" in the way that Toews et al are stars. I don't pay to see Dubinsky play I pay to watch him live in a system

Bringing the mosh (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Saturday, 12 July 2014 14:02 (eleven years ago)

dubinsky's contract is a direct result of bolland's, which is why everyone in the league is pissed at dale tallon. dubinsky is, after all, $300k better than bolland.

that doesn't mean that a team is forced to follow that logic, but with 30 to choose from the odds are in a middling player's favor.

lockout after lockout, there seems to be no way to protect management from its own stupidity

Not as expansions, I must say. Also, Las Vegas seems like a terrible idea.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 21:51 (eleven years ago)

Toronto?

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 27 August 2014 21:57 (eleven years ago)

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 27 August 2014 22:45 (eleven years ago)

Ppl have been trying to start Toronto 2 for a while now, right? Or Hamilton or wherever.

dan m, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 22:54 (eleven years ago)

happy for québec, toronto makes sense, not so sure about seattle, fuck vegas

seems like simply another up-front cash grab for the league with no thought to consequences, tho. it would make more long-term sense to move phoenix arizona and the florida teams, but i guess we have to have east-west balance lest detroit and columbus get screwed again. and looking at the existing league's fourth-liners doesn't really bode well for the quality of an expanded talent pool.

totally intrigued at how a second toronto team would work though -- who switches allegiances? will it become scarborough's team? some kind of celtic/rangers thing? will they call it the marlies? maybe go the rough()riders route and call the new team the maple leaves . . .

I get this feeling that NHL brass has seen the turnout and enthusiasm for Seattle Sounders FC in MLS (30k+ for every game, some games 60k+) and hope it'll translate to hockey. If that's the case, they're probably right.

dan m, Thursday, 28 August 2014 00:39 (eleven years ago)

Also I had a soft spot for the Nordiques back in the day and my dad got hit in the head with a puck at a QMJHL game in QC once, so I'm all for a return to the big leagues for them.

dan m, Thursday, 28 August 2014 00:40 (eleven years ago)

and unlike the three other cities mentioned there is a NBA team lurking around, which makes for a sweeter arena deal iirc. and christ, there is two teams in Florida and none in the whole of american pacific northwest, that's one of the ten big tragedies of hockey in my opinion.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 28 August 2014 00:40 (eleven years ago)

my main worry about seattle is that i like seattle and don't want to see it inevitably jobbed in the arena deal

what do sounders tickets cost? i also worry that, you know, all the kids play soccer but playing hockey is expensive as fuc. i dunno. good luck to seattlipolitans of course

40 years ago my dad was reading the paper during warmups at the civic arena and took a puck off the forehead. he was taken to the penguins locker room for stitches and pierre larouche signed the puck, which my dad still has

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 11 September 2014 22:13 (eleven years ago)

I don't think I agree with fivethirtyeight's methodology for the expansions, of course having a new franchise will create new hockey fans, so the original number of hockey fans is not as important as long as it is not too low (like in the case of Vegas). That's the point of an expansion. I'd like to know how fans there was in say Columbus or Raleigh before they had teams.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 11 September 2014 22:19 (eleven years ago)

By and large, I would not call certain hockey spectators in certain cities/states "fans". Maybe I'm getting too pedantic or nitpicky, but really, I can't imagine even 1/4 of Kings attendants in LA are fans. They just like to see fast and furious style playing; as if it were some type of wrestling event. I say this in earnest.

But anyway, that aside, I guess I'm asking myself "Is there a hockey culture in [insert city] to begin with?" I kind of have my doubts when we're talking about the high desert. Similarly, Florida. The league is losing more money/low ROI in organisations like Lightning. Even from a business perspective, I don't seem to understand Bettman and co. but maybe I'm missing something. They seem to want a team in every vacation destination.

, Thursday, 11 September 2014 23:21 (eleven years ago)

having a franchise will create hockey fans, but not enough. in canada and select northern usa cities, there are enough ppl that like hockey that the team can still survive without winning (hi leafs!)

these other places aren't like that, and a losing team in a sport that no one actually plays won't even have the draw of soccer, i don't think.

one wonders if the panthers or thrashers might have done better with decent management, but hockey has now failed twice in atlanta, the ninth-largest metro area in the usa. tampa has periodically been good, won a cup, had marketable players, and is still marginal. (lol at the whole barry melrose + crazy owners episode, tho)

mookieproof, Thursday, 11 September 2014 23:40 (eleven years ago)

Bettman's betting on the sunbelt is going to be discussed for a long time, I agree with you guys it wasn't a very good idea. Hockey is a niche sport and should have been respected as such instead of opening shop in Florida or Atlanta or Phoenix and etc. Yet, I still think cities like Milwaukee and Seattle deserve a try and since they are obvious northern cities that shouldn't be compared to Tampa. Also bring back the Whalers goddammit.

so the oilers have had six straight top-10 draft picks, including a stretch of three #1s in a row. are they ever going to stop sucking? or at least lose all their games 7-6?

Via deadspin comments:

"Because Horton's contract was uninsured, so the Blue Jackets were going to have to pay him $30 million over five years whether he played or not. They're not a rich team. So now they pay Clarkson the same amount of real $ they would have paid Horton, but get an actual player (sort of) for the money. They couldn't/wouldn't spend another $5 million on a player to replace Horton with the LTIR cap relief in their lineup."

i think he should/will stay, but speculation is fun

from a roster standpoint at least, i'd go with the blues (assuming that job is available)

mookieproof, Thursday, 30 April 2015 02:36 (ten years ago)

I think he should stay too honestly, they're very close to deploying a team of mostly homegrown awesome players, just need to get rid of some legacy types.

because the rangers are beautiful, their shirts are beautiful, lundqvist is beautiful, etc

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 9 May 2015 03:34 (ten years ago)

In what regard. I thought that contract was dumb at the time and it still is. They dumped Niemi (who seems like the bizarro bryzgalov in a way? like y couldn't teams make a Niemi deal work while refusing to give up on bryzgalov?) only to lateral to crawford. they bought into recency bias on a dude w a .912 sv% when not accounting for 2012 outlier season. It's the Quick problem again, only i suppose in crawford his injury risk is lower idk. Corey Crawford is the rich man's marty turco.

How Butch, I mean (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Saturday, 9 May 2015 16:19 (ten years ago)

"Crawford started the 2014–15 season with a 12–5–1 record. He injured his foot, however, on December 1, 2014, while attending a Rise Against concert. Due to this, Crawford was expected to miss two-to-three weeks."

^ I did not know this; I don't really pay attention to the rest of the league until late January

Well TB scared me more than I expected last night. They screwed themselves coming out in the 2nd with the apparent intent of bashing every Hawk the moment he passed the puck on. It didn't work and it took them out of so many opportunities to gain control back. Great game. Gonna be a more difficult win for the Hawks than I predicted for sure. Too bad for the Lightning, though, because according to Wikipedia it appears the Hawks have already won the Cup!
