You'll Laugh, You'll Cry, You'll Wish Everyone Involved Was Horribly Maimed: The Romantic Comedies Poll Nominations and Discussion Thread

Message Bookmarked

We've done action movies, horror, comedies - time for that most maligned of cinematic subgenres to have its day. Everything centering around two people in love + comedy joeks is eligible, from Lubitsch to Apatow. We'll keep this thread open for couple weeks and then we'll do the standard voting/ballots thing. Vote for however many you want, I'll figure out some weighted scoring based on what people submit.

SEND YOUR BALLOTS TO: audiobot at yahoo dot com

BALLOTS DUE: August 24th, 5pm PST

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:31 (eleven years ago)

is this a poll for "worst" or "best"

marcos, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:35 (eleven years ago)

what do you think, smartypants?

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:35 (eleven years ago)

Are the following eligible:

Shaun of the Dead
The Princess Bride

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:36 (eleven years ago)

xp lol i'm serious, w/ the thread title and how maligned the genre is, it was an innocent question

marcos, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:36 (eleven years ago)

I would imagine whatev you think counts counts. Just concentrate on pre-1950 and you'll be fine.

All the Before crapfests will outpoll the complete works of Mitchell Leisen here, so I doubt I can stand to participate.

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:38 (eleven years ago)

the Before crapfests aren't comedy tho right?

i'm elf-ein lusophonic (imago), Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:38 (eleven years ago)

my favourite movie of all time is a romantic comedy, btw (That Obscure Object Of Desire)

i'm elf-ein lusophonic (imago), Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:39 (eleven years ago)

Shaun of the Dead
The Princess Bride

the latter yes, the former ... uh I know I've seen this movie and yet I have absolutely zero memory of there being a romantic plot in it at all so I'm gonna say no.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:40 (eleven years ago)

Before movies are not eligible, no joeks

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:41 (eleven years ago)

you not allowing non-sexual romance then? pegg/frost work that bro dynamic like it's got money hanging on it (which it does)

i'm elf-ein lusophonic (imago), Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:41 (eleven years ago)

absolutely zero memory of there being a romantic plot in it at all so I'm gonna say no.

It's quite a major part of it! But you're the boss.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:41 (eleven years ago)

Like the whole film is basically about Shaun getting his girlfriend back.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:42 (eleven years ago)

ah man did i miss the chance to do a "romance" poll? ah well...enjoy debating whether movies are funny enough to qualify!

da croupier, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:42 (eleven years ago)

Bringing Up Baby, btw

i'm elf-ein lusophonic (imago), Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:42 (eleven years ago)

^if this isn't top 3 you all fucking suck

i'm elf-ein lusophonic (imago), Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:43 (eleven years ago)

it's a Zom-Rom-Com iirc. I wouldn't vote for it, but it definitely counts

Number None, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:45 (eleven years ago)

Not going to vote in this at all (lack of familiarity - will be watching the results), but I would like to pile on outis for disqualifying Shawn of the Dead.

how's life, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:45 (eleven years ago)

no one should tell other people what movies can or cannot make them laugh and make them cry

da croupier, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:46 (eleven years ago)

also using comedy as a weapon to keep out the movies that spend more time on feels than pratfalls for shame

da croupier, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:47 (eleven years ago)

ok fine Shaun of the Dead counts what do I care. movie made v little impression on me.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:54 (eleven years ago)

non-sexual romance

idk what this is, or whether or not its a common enough subject to warrant inclusion

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:55 (eleven years ago)

Do the Thin Man movies count as romcoms, you think? I think so. No?

Welcome to my spooooooky carnival! Hope I don't... blow your mind! (Phil D.), Tuesday, 12 August 2014 16:55 (eleven years ago)

i feel pratfalls

the problem is i wd probably like to vote for cukor's Holiday but haven't seen it in maybe 15 years. so now i have to watch it in the next 12 days, along w/ 20 other titles i will think of.

Nick and Nora are married, which kills romance QED

just let peoples hearts want what they want, and have faith in a happy ending poll-wise - telling people they're wrong about what's a romantic comedy feels like something the guy left seething at the altar does

lotta laugh lines in before sunrise imo

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Tuesday, 12 August 2014 21:54 (eleven years ago)

yeah I don't really care what people nominate/vote for, everybody follow Gukbe's example

Superbad is different from those other films piscesx in that the two male leads actually affectionately spoon each other. That, and whether or not they really love each other is the central plot driver. altho they do end up with their respective girls at the end

I don't think it'll make my ballot, but Music & Lyrics is about as good as a contempo romcom as one could hope for.

You know something? He *did* say "well, yeah" a lot. (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 12 August 2014 22:24 (eleven years ago)

I watched it on a plane or something and a few bits stuck with me which is more than I'd've expected. IIRC both male and female leads have kind of believable, interesting problems they're working on, not just vague "baggage" from a past relationship that they need to "get over," and whether they get together or not has to do with more than just lame misunderstandings or w/e. I don't really know the genre that well though, so I could be super way off.

Just watched Look Who's Talking recently and was, to my surprise, charmed to pieces by Alley & Travolta. The baby voiceovers were amusing but not really what kept me around.

It's been a while since I saw Albert Brooks' Modern Romance--does that work, or is it too acerbic? I can't even remember if it's just about breaking up, or if there's any getting-back-together. Defending Your Life belongs, though.

Acerbic's the wrong word for Albert Brooks; pathetic, maybe.

Nothing could be worse than the Kutcher/Heigl Killers. Trust me on this one.

Simon H., Thursday, 14 August 2014 03:03 (eleven years ago)

By which I mean I'm pretty sure I've seen every bad Hollywood romcom made between about 2008 to 2012 and I'm fairly confident that was the most dismal, half-assed of them all.

Simon H., Thursday, 14 August 2014 03:24 (eleven years ago)

Killers was terrible but in a really generically bad way. A Good Year is astonishing in its ineptness. I didn't know anything about it other than Ridley Scott/Russell Crowe when I foolishly wandered in, and it took a whole 30 minutes before I realised it was a "comedy".

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Thursday, 14 August 2014 03:32 (eleven years ago)

I was told that A Good Year was an excellent candidate for the nightly bad-movie viewing sessions at the video store I used to work at, but we never got around to it. The trailer is amazing, though.

Simon H., Thursday, 14 August 2014 03:35 (eleven years ago)

Regle du Jeu might be too harsh for rom-com... It doesn't provide romantic satisfaction.

jmm, Thursday, 14 August 2014 03:37 (eleven years ago)

When Russell Crowe has to rent a Smart Car (HAHA) and then there's a fast-motion "stuck in the parking lot" bit I was like, "oh, this is supposed to be funny, despite the fact that nobody involved is funny."

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Thursday, 14 August 2014 03:37 (eleven years ago)

Is it an essential feature of romantic comedy that it have a happy ending?

jmm, Thursday, 14 August 2014 03:41 (eleven years ago)

Roman Holiday, at least, would seem to contradict that (or at least be the exception to prove the rule)

Simon H., Thursday, 14 August 2014 03:48 (eleven years ago)

see, Groundhog Day is NOT a romantic comedy, because the romance is PART of it but not the entire point.

L'Atalante (one of the ten greatest narrative features ever btw) has lots of funny stuff in it, but tho it may be a comedy in the Shakespearean sense I just don't think it fits here.

SEEMS TO ME (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 14 August 2014 04:08 (eleven years ago)

I don't think a happy ending is necessary. The Break-Up functions like a romantic comedy but obviously doesn't end that way. Annie Hall as well. I guess I'd say the definition, for me, would be "a comedy about romance".

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Thursday, 14 August 2014 04:09 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, I guess my definition is something like "comedies about romance, represented romantically," which for me excludes Annie Hall and will tend to promote happy outcomes. But heartbreak can be romantic(ized) as well, sure.

jmm, Thursday, 14 August 2014 04:31 (eleven years ago)

SEEMS TO ME (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 14 August 2014 04:52 (eleven years ago)

Flirting With Disaster

slam dunk, Thursday, 14 August 2014 05:02 (eleven years ago)

Sorry, not trying to police anyone's ballots. I'm just curious about the genre and what its limits might be.

Annie Hall definitely romanticizes a relationship, so yeah, my def'n won't exclude it. I guess I'm stuck on its being a failed relationship, whereas rom-coms typically are highly optimistic and affirmative. But yeah, no point in making that a binding rule.

jmm, Thursday, 14 August 2014 05:07 (eleven years ago)

'Failed' being debatable, I suppose. A relationship that was not happily ever after, I mean.

jmm, Thursday, 14 August 2014 05:22 (eleven years ago)

morbs otm, without genre policing this is gonna be a shitshow. to the argument that 'the movies that everyone agrees are romantic comedies will do the best anyway,' it should be pointed out that the classic rock poll just named The Cars the best classic rock album ever. at this rate i see fucking Shaun of the Dead walking this

een, Thursday, 14 August 2014 05:24 (eleven years ago)

That's a pretty solid album tho

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Thursday, 14 August 2014 05:26 (eleven years ago)

my point is that it's a definitive New Wave album (and New Wave exactly dne Classic Rock). other people obv think it's close enough, but the disagreement about its genre didn't prevent it from getting the top spot. idk why this poll should be different if anything goes.

een, Thursday, 14 August 2014 05:44 (eleven years ago)

a more realistic example would be the Before movies: i could totally see them winning, but to what extent are they actually attempting comedy?

I think of the 'Before...' films as 'Romantic', don't see that much more comedy in one of the 'Before...' series than the others. What Linklater does though (which is highlighted more than ever by Boyhood) is to see how Hollywood treats a genre and then proceeds to, not exactly subvert it, but certainly start with it as a base, do things with it that it wouldn't normally. The 'Before...' films are in a conversation with Rom Coms.

Just feel it should be on the poll.

Atp Fin (wins), Thursday, 14 August 2014 16:22 (eleven years ago)

think there's some space between "comedy" in the broader Shakespearean sense and modern expectations of actual lols. comedies don't need to be full of one-liners to lie inside the broader definition, and if a poll comes down to arguing about what films are genuinely "funny" in 2014 then it's kinda doomed before it begins. if nominations need policing at all then the edge cases shd be blatantly silly imo

I may be completely alone in the world in my love of Woo (semi-Bringing Up Baby update), but I'm a sucker for both date-gone-wrong movies and beautifully executed slapstick, and Jada Pinkett Smith is comic force.

I have never seen Americanization of Emily -- i'm waiting on it from the library -- but the fact that Paddy Blowhard Chayefsky wrote it does not fill me with hope.

I'm OK w/ Scott Pilgrim! He has all those fights for her! It's better than the Befores, and probably Breakfast at Tiffany's!

You've Got Mail is a remake of Shop Around the Corner, so why bother. (It's bad enough that I've seen even one of that Meg-Nora trilfartogy.)

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 August 2014 20:47 (eleven years ago)

What's interesting to me is the scarcity of movies that find ways to make love, in an actual developing relationship, both funny and the center of a plot. Even Shrek doesn't quite count (there's more buddy movie there than couple movie). To me, The Big Sleep is more of a rom-com than The Thin Man, but there aren't many movies (that I've seen) fitting this ideal that haven't already been mentioned...

It's also funny to me that Sleepless in Seattle, a movie I loathe where they don't even meet until the end, is considered the Ur-film of this genre.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 14 August 2014 20:55 (eleven years ago)

the genre is "romantic comedy" and not "love comedy" i guess. the former is a lot easier to narratize

The aim of Rooney is spot correct (Daphnis Celesta), Thursday, 14 August 2014 21:02 (eleven years ago)

something can be funny w/out being a comedy, and v.v.

Elaine May's New Leaf is kind of a travesty of a romantic comedy, as Matthau's trying to kill her most of the time. (ditto Heartbreak Kid, and that everyone but Grodin knows his pursuit of Cybill Shepherd is 100% desperation)

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 August 2014 21:20 (eleven years ago)

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 August 2014 21:47 (eleven years ago)

xp: I think you're right that these movies distort how we see relationships, but even more maybe how we define romance in movies? I realize this is highly individual. To me, The Breakfast Club is more romantic than Sixteen Candles (real relationships sparking across social lines, etc.), and Turner & Hooch (romance with the vet, not the dog, the latter of whom humanizes him to loosen up and fall in love with the vet) is slightly more romantic in a breezy way than any of the other Hanks romance movies here.

xp: Yeah, original Heartbreak Kid is satire of self-loathing "romance." Remake punishes character by having him marry Cybill Shepherd figure first.

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Friday, 15 August 2014 01:09 (eleven years ago)

I dont see why musicals should be specifically excluded

Οὖτις, Friday, 15 August 2014 02:17 (eleven years ago)

Well, the thing is, nearly all 'classic' Broadway musicals are romantic comedies (save the notable tragedies like Carousel, West Side Story) but the emphasis is on the score -- that's why their books usually suck.

But no one goes around singing stuff from Love Me Tonight -- it's the dialogue/plotting that's foregrounded.

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Friday, 15 August 2014 02:23 (eleven years ago)

You've Got Mail is a remake of Shop Around the Corner, so why bother.

These two movies are actually quite different! In She's Got Mail the "they like each other as pen pals but hate each other in real life" thing is pretty much the whole plot, whereas The Shop Around the Corner has other subplots too, and is more of an ensemble piece. So it's well worth watching both of them, seeing one doesn't really spoil the other.

MaudAddam (cryptosicko), Monday, 18 August 2014 16:05 (eleven years ago)

TCM is different and not as good over here :(

Number None, Monday, 18 August 2014 16:07 (eleven years ago)

Miracle is really the only movie i would watch on Christmas Eve, over The Apartment and Bad Santa

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Monday, 18 August 2014 16:08 (eleven years ago)

what no Die Hard

Οὖτις, Monday, 18 August 2014 16:09 (eleven years ago)

Hmm, looking closer -- some movies on TCM have upcoming scheduling and a "remind me" function, but some don't. Bummer.

Winking is srsly uglier than duckface.

it's my favorite of PS, a lot of people overlook it bcz it's not on that boxed set that came out in the last decade.

basically, smalltown schlub reluctantly rides to the rescue when the girl he's worshipped unrequitedly gets knocked up by a departing soldier she was too drunk to remember. yes, this came out in 1944.

When I read this at 1st I misread which part of the sentence "unrequitedly" was modifying & was like what the hell does it mean to unrequitedly get knocked up

Hogan's Bluff (wins), Monday, 18 August 2014 16:16 (eleven years ago)

well that's a different movie

I'm officially not nominating Begin Again.

clemenza, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 18:12 (eleven years ago)

Bumbling (and not in a Hugh Grant kinda way) my way through a top 20 right now. Too many gaps in my viewing, or just things I haven't seen in years. I *did* PVR It Happened One Night off TCM yesterday, which I'd been wanting to see again anyway.

North By Northwest and To Have and Have Not are silly misclassifications, but whatev

you are not limited to nominations i dont believe

LDoD trumps most of what's been mentioned of recent vintage, ditto Damsels in Distress.

missing from that master list and definitely mentioned:

Tried to get my wife to watch Something Wild a year or two ago and lemme tell ya, years of manic pixie dream girls since has not made melanie griffith's character/performance fresher

― da croupier,

I know what you mean but she's a little older and even without knowing what happens in the second half she gives the impression of being dangerous? idk She's never come off like proto-Zooey Deschanel.

feeling bad that I forgot to mention Nights of Cabiria in this thread/get it on the noms list

Οὖτις, Monday, 25 August 2014 15:58 (eleven years ago)

Alfred when did you first see something wild and when did you last see it? Would it have even occurred to you how someone might see it with fresh eyes today? Cuz the Zooey is there, even if demme goes deeper into who'd "turn your world upside down"

da croupier, Monday, 25 August 2014 16:05 (eleven years ago)

Nights of Cabiria is a TRAGEDY, goddammit! wtf, full enrollment needed in genre school.

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 August 2014 16:06 (eleven years ago)

something wild is a movie that opens with melanie griffith meeting a stuffy (allegedly) married dude in a diner, whimsically throwing his wallet out of the car before handcuffing him to a bed for some wild sex. melanie griffith. it shouldn't be THAT hard to imagine how it wouldn't be a great first impression for someone in 2014.

da croupier, Monday, 25 August 2014 16:12 (eleven years ago)

cuz ppl like their wallets more in 2014?

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 August 2014 16:27 (eleven years ago)

Nights of Cabiria is a TRAGEDY, goddammit!

but it's funny! and about romance. albeit more than one. and she's alone at the end. but still

Οὖτις, Monday, 25 August 2014 16:28 (eleven years ago)

funny sequences and/or Masina's funny face /= comedy

for you they made it into Sweet Charity

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 August 2014 16:32 (eleven years ago)

which I also considered voting for

Οὖτις, Monday, 25 August 2014 16:33 (eleven years ago)

but I like the original more

Οὖτις, Monday, 25 August 2014 16:33 (eleven years ago)

I also discounted Twentieth Century bcz it's about the Lombard and Barrymore characters, and they are not fucking each other or trying to.

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 August 2014 16:43 (eleven years ago)

1994 my first viewing, and, yeah, it was after several years of Griffith sexpot roles like Working Girl and Shining Through, so it was far easier to accept her. But even from the pod of a newbie she's older than the average Manic Pixie Girl. She emits a danger that the Zooeys don't.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 August 2014 17:12 (eleven years ago)

I've got a ballot in the making. Only had to add about 5 titles that weren't on the master list.

It's Autumn Sunrise (Eric H.), Monday, 25 August 2014 17:26 (eleven years ago)

hurry up laggards!

Οὖτις, Monday, 25 August 2014 17:31 (eleven years ago)

But even from the pod of a newbie she's older than the average Manic Pixie Girl. She emits a danger that the Zooeys don't.

the fact that she was hovering around 30 doesn't make the shtick fresher, and you're really overrating the danger emittance in the first act

da croupier, Monday, 25 August 2014 17:46 (eleven years ago)

pssshht, Tuomas won't look at this thread again until Thursday.

Cindy Operahouse (WilliamC), Monday, 25 August 2014 17:46 (eleven years ago)

nobody's mentioned About Last Night.... which was the first "date movie" i actually watched while on a date

and in his absence, she (Lee626), Monday, 25 August 2014 17:48 (eleven years ago)

is there a number limit on the ballots?

rob, Monday, 25 August 2014 18:01 (eleven years ago)

well the longest ballot so far is Morbz' with 50. I adjusted the scoring/point weighting to accomodate that (which didn't really change the results much) but I'd say that's the upper limit now.

Οὖτις, Monday, 25 August 2014 18:02 (eleven years ago)

when you say "romantic comedy" you're really saying "David Mamet"

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 August 2014 18:41 (eleven years ago)

I did find Mamet's casting of Al Pacino/Helen Mirren as a couple in "Spector" p funny

Οὖτις, Monday, 25 August 2014 18:45 (eleven years ago)

now i'm fretting whether Rob Lowe was the Herbert Marshall or Melvyn Douglas of the '80s

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 August 2014 18:49 (eleven years ago)

Οὖτις, Monday, 25 August 2014 22:28 (eleven years ago)

that seems like way less ballots than the action and comedies polls I guess ILX just doesn't feel the LUV

Οὖτις, Monday, 25 August 2014 22:30 (eleven years ago)

or ILM thinks Radiohead has more laffs and romance.

His Meg Ryan hairdo is making me feel ill

Randall "Humble" Pie (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 25 August 2014 22:55 (eleven years ago)

the fact that she was hovering around 30 doesn't make the shtick fresher, and you're really overrating the danger emittance in the first act

I'll concede that someone who's endured 500 Days of Summer's Hall & Oates sequence has less patience for this shit, but there's enough going on in SW -- the use of locations, soundtrack, use of non-actors and the supporting cast -- to mitigate The Scent of Manic Pixiness. A large part of what makes the movie work for me is how I never know how I'm supposed to feel about Charlie and Lulu's hookup, Charlie going along with Lulu, Lulu herself. Cuz of all the stuff I mentioned, the ground feels like it's continuously churning. Few Manic Pixie movies even bother.

piscesx, Tuesday, 26 August 2014 00:58 (eleven years ago)

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 26 August 2014 01:15 (eleven years ago)

ahh you're a good man.

piscesx, Tuesday, 26 August 2014 01:17 (eleven years ago)

this will probably be at least as bad as the general comedy poll

Jonathan Demme knows nothing abt yr Manic Pixie Shit, and the guy who wrote the script -- w/out looking, im gonna say E Max Frye? and that he never had another credit in the same ballpark? -- was also too old to.

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 26 August 2014 02:16 (eleven years ago)

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 26 August 2014 02:17 (eleven years ago)

I think some people (like me) might've gotten confused by the title of this thread, because it says "The Romantic Comedies Poll Nominations and Discussion Thread", with no mention of voting, or a deadline. I thought there'd be a separate thread for voting, as is usually the case with ILX ballot polls.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 26 August 2014 10:54 (eleven years ago)

Can send a ballot tonight if that's ok.

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 26 August 2014 11:30 (eleven years ago)

yeah well this has never made sense to me (what is there to discuss in a voting thread - that you voted?) and as Romantic Comedies Poll Dictator For Life I have dispensed with this unnecessary step

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 26 August 2014 15:34 (eleven years ago)

hurry it up xyzzzzz

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 26 August 2014 15:34 (eleven years ago)

If I knew there'd be extra time, I coulda watched some of my choices!

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 26 August 2014 15:45 (eleven years ago)

you still can, you just can't change your vote

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 26 August 2014 15:49 (eleven years ago)

Sorry btw, can't, actually needed time to remind myself etc etc.

Look forward to the countdown.

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 26 August 2014 22:14 (eleven years ago)

you are fired from this thread

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 26 August 2014 22:20 (eleven years ago)
