I always have an art exercise where kids choose from about 50 famous faces I run off for them and do a pencil sketch. The best part for me is always the class where I go through the choices and talk about each one. If any of them come across this on the news, hope it clicks in who she was.

Just watched To Have and Have Not a few weeks ago. I still can't get on board with the "better than Casablanca" cult, but let's be honest about why the film works so well: simply pointing a camera Bogie and Bacall was enough.

She was on the Oscars back in the mid-00s, introducing a film noir clip package. She had to wear these enormous old lady glasses to read the teleprompter, and even then she was having a hard time keeping up, frequently stumbling over her words. I felt so bad for her to be thrown out there like that after a career practically defining 'cool'.

I love Robards' detectable just-gimme-the-check aura there. I'm sure those two had plenty of coffee the mornings after they threw all the glassware at each other.
She did three things with James Garner in a little over a year -- a Rockford Files, Health, The Fan (a lurid stalker thriller) -- ao I guess I'll continue to believe that gossip about the incident in the limousine...

did anyone ever read By Myself?
"My son tells me, 'Do you realize you are the last one? The last person who was an eyewitness to the golden age?' Young people, even in Hollywood, ask me, 'Were you really married to Humphrey Bogart?' 'Well, yes, I think I was,' I reply. You realize yourself when you start reflecting—because I don't live in the past, although your past is so much a part of what you are—that you can't ignore it. But I don't look at scrapbooks. I could show you some, but I'd have to climb ladders, and I can't climb."

haven't read that it was.
“I don’t think anybody that has a brain can really be happy. What is there really to be happy about? You tell me. If you’re a thinking human being, there’s no way to divorce yourself from the world. Yes, I probably was happy when I was married to Bogie, but I was very young then. I had a good growing-up life, I would say, but I wasn’t really happy, because I was an only child, and I wasn’t part of a whole family—what we in America consider the proper family, a father and a mother and child, which, of course, is a big crock we know—and yet I had the greatest family anyone could wish for in everyone on my mother’s side. So what you think is happy? Happy shmappy. I think you have to be unconscious to be happy. Are you unconscious?”

i read by myself as a kid because my mom owned it, and i was transfixed by how pretty young lauren bacall was on the cover. (there was a glossy photo section in the middle, and i would just stare at her face.) i remember it being a good read! she seemed cool. i was slightly weirded out by her relationship with bogart. not because she described anything bad, but because of the age difference and because the intensity of the feeling she described was sort of scary to me. i love that quote about happiness.

During the filming, while Bacall was home, Bogart resumed his discreet affair with Verita Peterson, his long-time studio assistant, whom he took sailing and enjoyed drinking with. But when Bacall suddenly arrived on the scene discovering them together, Bacall took it quite well. She extracted an expensive shopping spree from him and the three traveled together after the shooting.[113]

Sinatra called her "The Jew Bitch", and used to entertain friends by telling them how bad she was at giving head. In return, Bacall actually coined the term "The Rat Pack" when describing Bogie (their then-leader) and the gang after a bender.

I watched Dark Passage for the first time last night, possibly the least loved of the four B&B movies. It's famous for Bogey being either voice-only POV camera or swathed in cosmetic-surgery bandages for the first hour (as an escaped convict), but their scenes have sizzle of course. Then Agnes Moorehead has to be seductive and it kinda goes to hell. Some San Francisco location shooting too.
