The fact that no one has even bothered to mention the name of the victimized celebrity across 30 posts, because it is assumed you know all about it already, is a commentary in itself.

The people who read the Daily Express are the people who believe the bigoted, prejudiced, anti-everything attitude it foists on it's readers. It is the same as all tabloids in that rather than make it's readers think about things or challenge their ideas, it just writes what they know their readership already think and believe.

OK let's entertain for entertainment the fact that her "Music should not be free" stern balled editorial wasn't corporate shilling and just the regular blazayblah opinion probably most people on the street might have if you pressed them on this subject of i.p rights and internet downloads that they don't often think about and have never dl'd a song for free in their life. Let's also ignore, for the moment, the fact she's from a rich family a stock broker father and Merril Lynch financial wealth management adviser of millions of dollars. Let's also ignore, for a second, that generation of her grandfathers are banking presidents. Let's also put aside the fact Taylor's parents have been shaping and controlling and market managing her pop career since she was 14, setting up merchendising companies in her name, alienating people with that alleged arrogance and 'pay as little as possible and treat people like shit' attitude.

Let's put all that aside for a brief moment and reconsider her assertion: "It's my opinion that music should not be free".

And remind ourselves: She's only worth $200 million, guys. She only made $120 million on her last tour. We shouldn't forget that. She's only 24. People at 24 with only hundreds of millions in the bank and millions of adoring merchandise wearing fans can only be asked to give so much. I mean come on, her New York penthouse was only bought for $20 million, how do you expect her to keep up this lifestyle? Music should not be free. Music should not be free. It is my opinion that music should not be free.

Hey, Tom - do you mean "written tics" outside of obvious grammatical errors and poor spelling? (I loved those 3rd-grade-level e-mails I used to get asking if I was selling Dave Matthews Band tickets. I felt like I was in a hi-tech version of Fast Times - "No, I DON'T have any Blue Oyster Cult!")

I've always chafed against constant use of those damn emoticons. You know - ;), :), :P, %). Once in a while, okey dokey. Fifteen times in the same "conversation", I'm about to go alkdjfalkj.

Origin of such things (i.e. "Two words:", "Can you say...") - television. Bane of our existance. Glass tit. Sweet oblivion.

Sure, I get that about automation and fragility and buying parts - but the espresso people are less "buy a receiver at the pawn shop" and more "my diamond-encrusted cable really allows me to HEAR this section of Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' for the first time."

Mostly no. The difference between the espresso you get out of a top-quality commercial machine like a La Marzocco and out of a substandard quality home machine is enormous. There are pricey but not insanely pricey home machines where you can get pretty close to the Marzocco quality with the right technique. And certain factors in making espresso are pretty well-established -- pressure, temperature, grind, tamping (not to speak of the beans themselves). The best machines are simply able to produce the appropriate pressure and temperature consistently, which is surprisingly difficult. Other bells and whistles can make a difference -- the bottomless portafilter, for example, but there's a pretty commonsense reason for that one -- in a normal portafilter oils from the coffee build up and are hard to clean away. The bottomless portafilter simply eliminates that problem.

Sports writing is and always will be terrible, because sports contests are extremely rule-bound and essentially near duplicates of one another in everything but the outcome of each contest. All the possible stories have been written hundreds of thousands of times. Consequently, sports writers are stuck in horrible dead end jobs they often become wretched unhappy people.

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau) wrote this on thread US POLITICS SUMMER 2011: The Rise of Neo-Gabbnebism on board I Love Everything on Sep 12, 2011

I mean that I don't really know what those who oppose the GOP want as a replacement, and why. Like, I think it's not some single thing, & that a main cause of the discord & disorganization of the Left is that. Like, GOP voters love war & giving rich people more money, because they love (what they take to be an important kind of) freedom. What's the equivalent on the Left?

End the wars for eff's sake, they are what got us in 9/11 in the first place, and frankly, I'm a little bit worried that if i do have kids, in 20 years they may be blown up by someone in Iraq who's entire family we killed today.

Secondly, actually do something for the environment. See, this is where Obama loves rich people (corporations are people, right?) just as much as you think GOP voters do. Leave the "Oh it's bad for business/not politically possible" smokescreen back home. There are plenty of registered voters who love the environment and would love for some positive steps to be taken.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1684753391807202/

“BEYOND THE EYES” is born from an idea by Valentina & Riccardo.

The reason why we started taking photographs of our closest friends was to intentionally put them in a playful and spontaneous mood to see what clothes they were willing to remove. The intention was to bring out of them a potential erotic energy that they didn’t think and or feel they had. We fall in love with human bodies because of how fragile they are and because of their marvelous authenticity. We feel that the act of admitting to oneself in a quiet way that one can be at any moment turned on by even the boyfriends and or girlfriends of one’s closest
friends is one of the most dignified expressions of the mystery of this universe. Without physically making love to our subjects, it is our necessity to create a desire of gentle lovemaking for the spectator of our images. In each one of us there is a space which is timeless; a space that can allow us at any moment to completely fall in love with whatever object or being we have in front of us. This is a space we either deny ourselves through predictable concept of what is right and what is wrong. So often we cover up these feelings of wan-
ting to make love in the gentlest way possible with a perfect stranger and or a close friend. Reconnecting with our inner dreamy timelessness can be a way of fighting against the alienation brought about by imposed conditioning and preconceptions.
We find ourselves disgusted by women who express their sense of femininity with a maniacal and vulgar precision. Our muses are women with a profound sense of eroticism void of excessive jewelry and make up and flashy product placement. We adore when a woman wears a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and without uncomfortable heels. We are fascinated by the duality of the human being. Lately, humans have lost the habit and or pleasure of observing. Our photographs need to express a sort
of nostalgia of getting lost in others without the need to constantly cover everything up with the simple gesture of obsessively controlling cellular telephones. It saddens us that seduction keeps becoming more and more vulgar. We feel that fashion is a lovely source of inspiration, thou-
gh we personally prefer to photograph friends. Models have the habit or necessity to create predictable machine like poses which make us feel uncomfortable. Perhaps this all has to do with dedicating too much time on our cell phones. Perhaps it could help to give oneself the time and space to observe whatever we have in front of us for the sake of allowing ourselves to fall completely in love in any moment of life. Float.

http://neil-gaiman.tumblr.com/post/43087620460/i-was-reading-a-book-about-interjections-oddly

I was reading a book (about interjections, oddly enough) yesterday which included the phrase “In these days of political correctness…” talking about no longer making jokes that denigrated people for their culture or for the colour of their skin. And I thought, “That’s not actually anything to do with ‘political correctness’. That’s just treating other people with respect.”

Which made me oddly happy. I started imagining a world in which we replaced the phrase “politically correct” wherever we could with “treating other people with respect”, and it made me smile.

You should try it. It’s peculiarly enlightening.

I know what you’re thinking now. You’re thinking “Oh my god, that’s treating other people with respect gone mad!”

Happy Valentine’s Day.

pplains, Wednesday, 6 July 2016 15:23 (nine years ago)

I grew up in a neighborhood with no sidewalks and it was really shitty. I probably would have spent more time walking/biking places if there had been sidewalks.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Wednesday, 6 July 2016 15:28 (nine years ago)

19.6% are under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years.

it's a suburb of about 5k people with no schools of their own, a small retail strip that's mostly known for being a 25mph speed limit trap, big box retail in the corner (wal-mart, sam's club, and a large grocery store) that divides the main residential area from the single park, which is mostly known because it's on another suburb's trail system. I think the park is next to the older houses/apartments/town homes that the few younger people might actually live in

I guess there's a demographic that thinks "affordable house, lower taxes, raise some kids here" but even that group is aging out.

tbh a lot of people forget it's a suburb

Just realized same dude also posted a pretty pathetic post in another group I'm in about issues with seeing his daughter on weekends -- it actually sounded like his ex was being difficult, but the fool also still had not bothered to get a lawyer and no official custody arrangement had even been set as a result, his ex just had the daughter during the week and then made him jump through a few hoops to get her on the weekends. Dude is just not an adult, basically.

I didn't know how you were going to animate it, and then you hit it out of the park.

If you want upvotes on Imgur, you gotta post a pic of a busty woman about to do a handstand and then label it, "THIS IS MY SISTER. SHE DIED OF CANCER AFTER GETTING HIT BY A DRUNK DRIVER (WHO WAS MY DAD.)"

Oh really? I didn't check. Damn. I'll just delete it.

So basically you're a plagiarizer

I don't think that word means what you think it means. Also, I'm deep down in the most recent and popular posts, and I don't see any of them

a second imgur asshole
You were taking credit for it "still working on it" but then admitted it was a repost?

me
It's not a repost, I've spent 8+ hours isolating the body parts and animating them. It's a popular meme that you're obviously familar with

second imgur asshole
Then don't remove it! I withdraw my objection. I will even up vote your fidget spinner as all OC is good OC.

to which i replied "oh thank you for your generosity! you have truly showed the world your support of OC" in my mind and then thought "HEH! GOT HIM."

It's just this thread always annoys me when it crops up because it just seems like sneering at people who haven't been around for as long as you. I know I was very pretentious when I was younger, had some pretty simplistic and not-well-thought-through views, but weren't we all like that? Why be annoyed with people just for being in that phase of their lives? And often it's "this is a cliche" but so what? Cliches are everywhere, something being a cliche doesn't make it any more or less true, who cares? I just can't understand what is annoying or even interesting about the 6/10 internet ephemera that lives here.

My favorite NYer cartoon of all time is one where all the different animals are at a conference room table and they all say "woof" instead of their normal animal onomatopoeia and there's a dog at the head of the table and the caption is "everybody gets a raise."

El Tomboto, Sunday, 4 June 2017 15:34 (eight years ago)

Why be annoyed with people just for being in that phase of their lives?

Some (most?) people have tired "trenchant" opinions their entire lives. Some of the most trenchant people I know are old now and unlikely to change a single thing that they believe before they're interred. Trite truisms and ponderous platitudes of the sort exemplified in this thread are worthy of derision. They are the product of lazy, comfortable minds, and one should always afflict the comfortable.

let's all promise each other to draw only better cartoons

El Tomboto, Saturday, 19 May 2018 23:46 (seven years ago)

that cartoon was less like Garfield and more like an editorial cartoon. it posed as making a valid social observation based on something historically accurate, but the only thing underpinning its opinion was a profound ignorance of the subject it was addressing.

there will always be a certain number of people who happily accept ignorance as truthful, because it reinforces their own biases. the fact this piece of nonsense was in cartoon form makes no difference to the process of spreading and reinforcing ignorance that I just described.

So, fuck that noise. the cartoonist is a poopy head.

A is for (Aimless), Sunday, 20 May 2018 03:10 (seven years ago)

avg 30 year old of the middle ages would without a doubt ponder buying a car if it were available.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 20 May 2018 14:46 (seven years ago)

No way yer average 30 year old in the middle ages had fought in three wars.

yeah not for an average 30 year old. tho if you were in the military class you would likely get sent around to different conflicts. you would fight the French or Spanish or other Englishmen, maybe personal/private conflicts, maybe state affairs, maybe both. the same you maybe a modern 30 year old would get sent to Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. different conflicts in different geographical regions.

as for the children he sired, they may be off in these different parts of the land, with bastards all over Europe. frivolous spending on military campaigns was a huge political problem in the middle ages (just as it is now lol). famously the revolt of 1381 was in response to over-taxing to pay for the constant wars.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 20 May 2018 15:44 (seven years ago)

lol @ "overcome cholera" tho. 1/3rd of the population, were dying off every generation, from various forms of the plague, and medicine was entirely ignorant and often did more to harm the patient than anything. mercury was given as a common cure. even if you could afford a doctor, they would be entirely ineffective. medical knowledge was based on gazing at urine in jars and inhaling all kinds of drugs imported from the East while doing astrological charts. if a family member got sick, there was a strong chance it could spread to the entire family, so may were left to isolate their family members in fear of their own lives. infanticide was at an all time high. xenophobia was at an all time high. as for cholera:

A widely-held theory in western Europe during the Middle Ages was that disease was caused by a miasma, i.e., an atmosphere polluted by air from decaying bodies or from swamps. Risky areas could be identified by a bad smell.

due to the non-existence of a public sanitation system nor corporate/industrial environmental regulations, there were plenty of sitting water sources festering in waste and bacteria around. sometimes public river sources caught on fire from the shit disposed by the nearby wealthy hyper consumers. again, just like modern times, the rich screwing over the habitats of the people they benefit from. for many Jewish citizens, tradition instructed different ways to find water, and these different customs were looked at suspiciously, conspiracies brewing (as always) from misunderstanding. people, in lieu of legal recourse or really any rights to defend against the abusive powerful, resorted to blaming ethnic/cultural minorities for poisoning water sources. this kind of shit has been going on for 700+ years.

For a significant amount of time (before online dating) I had a job where I edited and laid out newspaper personals ads. It was fascinating but also a little heartbreaking.

The way people feel they have to pick a few signifiers, cultural dogwhistles, or whatever. It provides a fast sort, I understand the impulse. If you believe you need to date a juggalo or a knitter or a MAGAnaut, then you pretty much do.

But it seems like with all our algorithms and swiping and such, we haven't come very far from liking pina coladas and getting caught in the rain.

Think the overall point isn't that you have to care about it but it's cloying to act as if people can't hold two thoughts in their head at the same time.

The pedestrian crossing has disappeared because the mobile generation are too busy looking at phones to find the correct place to cross.
The Beatles are all going in different directions because despite the interconnectedness of the mobile and social media generation we have lost that true human connection that pulls us together.
The steering wheel is on the left as it represents the real Paul McCartney (a left handed Beatle) who was dead by the time this picture was taken.

Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Monday, 25 March 2019 00:29 (six years ago)

Because closing the border to LEGAL traffic and trying to stop illegal immigration are obviously two different things? The wall (as bad an idea as it is) is not designed to "close the border," it's designed to prevent people from making unauthorized crossings. Close the border means close the legal crossings.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 30 December 2019 05:11 (five years ago)

The trenchant commentator is correct. After all, "capitalist enterprises" make up (does some quick, back of the envelope calculations) nearly 100% of the economic activity in capitalist societies and STEM expertise seems to result in marginal improvements to basic manufacturing that generate increased profit margins more reliably than having the ability to throw pots.

A is for (Aimless), Monday, 30 December 2019 05:32 (five years ago)

Well yeah. Half of the observation is just a truism -- a capitalist economy is going to pay more for functions that are more valuable to capitalism. The rest is just silly. Ceramicists don't get paid six figures because we can just mass produce that shit. It has nothing to do with whether it kills people or not, and that's the most /trench part of the whole thing.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 31 December 2019 03:44 (five years ago)

you're trying to tell me this is mass produceable?

As long as it's OK that the product of the mass production is nearly indistinguishable from the original, then yes, that particular piece of pottery is almost certainly mass producible. The next question would be how big the market might be for machine-produced items exactly like that and what could be charged for them versus the cost of their production, including packaging, transport and ancillary costs. If the unit cost is too high, then there's no point in initiating mass production.

Think people also forget SCOTUS aren't supposed to vote based on their personal feelings but the law itself. That obviously doesn't mean they don't, but RBG probably would have voted against legalizing abortion in Roe v Wade despite being pro-choice because she didn't feel the legal reasoning behind it was very strong.

Dig Dug the police (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 16 June 2020 15:25 (five years ago)

SCOTUS aren't supposed to vote based on their personal feelings but the law itself.

The SCOTUS is not the source of either social progress or slash and burn capitalism. The law itself is written by Congress, so the SCOTUS interpreting the law 'correctly' does not negate the validity of the quote. The questionable part of the quote for me is whether social progress is truly a ploy conceived by capitalism as a means to distract society from its predations. I doubt it.

really doubt such a clear, linear thought process as "better dead than autistic" is actually going on in antivaxxers minds

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 8 July 2021 01:19 (four years ago)

“I’d rather have X than not do Y” when it’s those stakes are college stoner thought experiments and not great for the real world

so sure, how trenchant

mh, Thursday, 8 July 2021 04:06 (four years ago)

I also feel like it follows a formula I see a lot on Twitter where you take something that is already bad (antivaxers, hatred of or misunderstanding toward autism) and extrapolate an even more extreme conclusion that doesn’t actually follow. Like “White America’s apathy toward police killings of black men just proves they would like to see every black person in America dead” or “Global warming inaction demonstrates how much our politicians hate our children.”

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 8 July 2021 05:05 (four years ago)

Hmm

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Thursday, 8 July 2021 07:33 (four years ago)

I was following up to the examples and then hmm

mh, Thursday, 8 July 2021 15:41 (four years ago)

it’s not far fetched at all there is a massive overlap between anti-vaxxers and autism parents. and neither of those other examples seem massively out there to me either

they might not necessarily be part of a conscious linear thought process but what is

Left, Thursday, 8 July 2021 16:05 (four years ago)

anti-vaxxers generally question the efficacy of the vaccines. so it is a stretch to say that they would rather their children dead than autistic. this kind of thing is usually an emotional response, often from someone with autism themselves (or close to people with autism), so is a bit more understandable in that context

《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 8 July 2021 16:33 (four years ago)

man alive is technically correct; more accurate statements would be "White America’s apathy toward police killings of Black men just proves they don't give a shit about the treatment of Black people" and “Global warming inaction demonstrates how much our politicians don't care about the existence of the world past their lifetimes.”

an eco-conscious Music Box (DJP), Thursday, 8 July 2021 16:36 (four years ago)

however, anyone capable of parsing sentiment should be able to understand what those original examples are driving at so it really is just splitting semantics for the sake of splitting semantics

an eco-conscious Music Box (DJP), Thursday, 8 July 2021 18:54 (four years ago)

Sure, but there are many evils in the world at a given time. You can't be said to be actively supporting anything you aren't actively opposing, it wouldn't even be possible to actively oppose everything.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 8 July 2021 18:55 (four years ago)

Or, you can say it's bad on facebook, check a box, and you're no longer complicit?

? of course

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 8 July 2021 21:54 (four years ago)

I guess going back to the original thing, my experience with antivaxxers is that their reasoning is a few steps removed from reality, and usually includes believing that their kids won't actually get those diseases for whatever reasons ("natural immunity," use of homeopathic immunity boosters etc). I guess it's possible that the grossly twisted thinking of an antivaxxer sometimes grows out of struggles with having a severely autistic child, even though it tends to take a life of its own from there.
