The Suicide Squad Film Follies

Well well:

Warner Bros has firmed Will Smith, Tom Hardy and Margot Robbie for its DC Comics villain team Suicide Squad, and has set Jared Leto to play The Joker, Jai Courtney to play Boomerang and Cara Delevingne to play Enchantress in the David Ayer-directed film. Smith plays Deadshot, Hardy Rick Flagg and Robbie Harley Quinn. Most of these were reported on. Not in the studio announcement is whether Jesse Eisenberg brings his Batman V Superman villain Lex Luthor to the DC cavalcade, as I’ve heard will happen.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 23:15 (ten years ago)

Somewhere Leto's all "And I didn't have to DIE to get MY Oscar."

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 23:16 (ten years ago)

How would Luthor make sense in a Suicide Squad movie

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 00:25 (ten years ago)

I've said it before on some other thread but would prefer a fairly straight all-villain heist movie

but instead we'll get this

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 00:27 (ten years ago)

they can't seriously be intending to release this with the name "SUICIDE SQUAD" right? "THE ATROCITY SIX" would make more sense.

Also: Pick out Deadshot's likely mask for this movie
1 - Cool full face mask with scope eye
2 - half mask with cross hair monocle thing
3 - fuck the masks, this is will smith; we're giving him some kind of bionic eye

a stupid red mute juggalo (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 00:35 (ten years ago)

i love that dc has precedent for failing in both directions

if they soften it to a smirky pg-13 shoot-'em-up...the losers

if they acknowledge the darkness of the concept in an R rated movie aiming for artfulness...watchmen

granted, neither movie had will smith. but the only movies to have will smith this decade are men in black 3 and after earth (granted, he's got two more before this one).

da croupier, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 00:47 (ten years ago)

it's so weird that a completely different suicide squad are set to show up in the arrow tv show, and the tv-show flash will have nothing to do with the dc cinematic universe's version. meanwhile marvel's universe is set up to exist more-or-less seamlessly across tv and film. such an odd duplication of labour.

da croupier, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 14:28 (ten years ago)

Suicide Squad was already in Arrow S2 - Deadshot, Bronze Tiger and Shrapnel, with a voice-only Harley Quinn cameo. Waller and ARGUS have played a big part in S3 to date.

i really should try to watch that and catch up on the Flash

Nhex, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 14:43 (ten years ago)

I haven't seen very much of arrow, so i didn't know the squad had turned up already. the flash is way better than i was expecting it to be tho - it's been a lot of fun so far.

bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 14:48 (ten years ago)

it's so weird that a completely different suicide squad are set to show up in the arrow tv show, and the tv-show flash will have nothing to do with the dc cinematic universe's version. meanwhile marvel's universe is set up to exist more-or-less seamlessly across tv and film.

I don't know if "weird" is exactly the word I'd use. WB's attempt to ape Marvel's cinematic universe is like something that has the cadence of a joke but isn't actually funny.

Rubies! And Emeralds! (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 15:08 (ten years ago)

Yeah, Flash is seriously great. Maybe there are a few too many fanboy buttons pushed but I'm happy being manipulated like that.

Arrow has been very patchy. S1 was mainly a let-down with a few notable high points (Count Vertigo, Deadshot, Huntress) but the main RICH PEOPLE ARE BAD plot wasn't nearly engaging enough. S2 looked like it was going down the same route with the Brother Blood stuff but managed to just about avoid the fate by concentrating on Deathstroke and tips over into great with the return of Vertigo and Huntress, Solomon Grundy, Suicide Squad, Flash and Clock King. Ray Palmer turning up has saved S3 from being too serious. There's still a danger of it lapsing into almost Buffy does police procedural which it just about treads the right line of.

the bowels are not what they seem (aldo), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 15:09 (ten years ago)

I forgot as well, the last ep had Ollie hand over Cupid to Waller as the latest Red Shirt for the Suicide Squad.

And CAPTAIN BOOMERANG at the end, who is in the Flash/Arrow team-up/crossover eps.

the bowels are not what they seem (aldo), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 15:17 (ten years ago)

Buffy does police procedural

this is definitely the vibe I get from Flash but tbf this is preferable to p much all the other garbage DC is putting out on film

I had forgotten hearing about them casting Michael Jai "Fuckin' BLACK DYNAMITE" White as Bronze Tiger

Grey/brown/black is a shitty palette to represent a distinctive team of character costumes with. They at least gave a decent costume to Deathstroke, didn't they?

Delbert Gravy (kingfish), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 16:47 (ten years ago)

i didn't know they were casting Spawn himself, awesome
Deathstroke looks terrible, like out of a syndicated 90s TV show. actually worse, Hercules and Xena had decent costume work

They used option number 3 for Deadshot in Arrow too, and the actor wasn't anyone you'd ever heard of. I guess superhero series/movie makers just don't believe anyone can act if they're face isn't visible.,, If Spider-Man and Batman didn't have such iconic costumes, I'm sure the movie folks would've come up with maskless design for them too.

Tuomas, Thursday, 4 December 2014 08:40 (ten years ago)

well, spider-man does spend a fair chunk of his movie screentime either unmasking himself at every opportunity or having his mask shredded in battle. iron man handled the issue really elegantly - maybe they should give deadshot a nifty heads-up display inside his helmet too.

sʌxihɔːl (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 4 December 2014 14:00 (ten years ago)

Iron Man had its share of gratuitous unmasking too. For example, in the second movie's climax he lifts his mask up to make some action movie one-liners, even though he's surrounded by enemies... What if one of them had shot him to the face at that point? (And IIRC, in the first movie both his and the big bad's masks were conveniently ripped off during the final fight.) The mask-removing makes even less sense for him than Spider-Man, because Spidey's mask has no protective use.

Fudge On My Uggs (Old Lunch), Saturday, 25 April 2015 14:30 (ten years ago)

The single purple glove is shit (and the cheap material makes it look like it came from a K-Mart Halloween costume), the tattoos are terrible as tattoos but not an awful idea overall, but the basic outlines of the design kind of remind me of a cross between Conrad Veidt and the Grant Morrison Bowie-inspired Joker, and you could do a hell of a lot worse than that. Plus, the metal teeth read to me not so much as a grill (as everyone's been referring to it) as Phantom of the Paradise...

Here's Deadshot's mask, which will be see on screen for what, 15 seconds?

Disappointed that there's no yellow in his costume, but the muted crimson banana clips are nice.

I'm still curious whether Will Smith will play him as Floyd Lawton or as Will Smith, but I ain't holding my breath. At this point, if the flick gets more people interested in and reading and flowing some small royalty stream to Ostrander et al for 80's Suicide Squad, it'll be good enough.

Also, movie-Harley's outfit is far less stupid than her current Nu52 get-up, at least.

when the best thing you have to say about costume design is that you like the "muted crimson banana clips"

Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato? (forksclovetofu), Monday, 4 May 2015 14:15 (ten years ago)

Yeah, the costume/makeup design is straight-up pathetic. The Arrow/Flash stuff isn't a whole lot better, but those are television shows with television show budgets. It's noteworthy that a fan in a homemade costume who was photographed near the set was initially mistaken for Will Smith in his Deadshot duds.

Allen (etaeoe), Friday, 8 May 2015 19:06 (ten years ago)

what i've always been curious about is

In 2002, a live-action television series called Birds of Prey, loosely based on the comic of the same name, included Harley Quinn as a psychotic psychiatrist and main antagonist. The character was portrayed by actress Mia Sara (replacing Sherilyn Fenn from an unaired pilot episode). The show aired only 13 episodes. In this show, she is portrayed as an older, far more calculating and sinister character than her bubbly comic and cartoon personas. Picking up where the Joker had left off, Harleen Quinzel used her day job as a therapist to achieve her savage purpose – to take control of the city of New Gotham. She does not wear a costume, although she does wear an outfit that is reminiscent of her cartoon costume in the series finale "Devil's Eyes." In that episode, she uses experimental technology to transfer metahuman mind control powers to herself. She occasionally makes reference to her "sweet Mr. J.", laments his loss as a Gotham City crime boss and hints at a past relationship reminiscent to that of the animated series.

― da croupier, 8. toukokuuta 2015 19:08

Even if Nolan didn't really use him, I'm pretty sure it's commonly known (not just among nerds) that Batman has a sidekick named Robin? I mean, the final gag of Dark Knight Rises depended on the viewers knowing this fact, even though Joseph Gordon-Levitt never became a superhero during the movie. And I'm not sure why the dead Robin has to be Jason Todd? Unless they have plans of using Nightwing in the future, they could easily say it was Dick Grayson who died. I'm pretty sure they want to avoid the whole "multiple Robins" thing, so the movies won't get too convoluted.

I do agree that it's a bit weird to start the reboot with Batman so far in his career, but OTOH Batman is pretty much the best-known superhero there is, and his origin story is fairly simple, so there isn't really any need to rehash it. And there are a kazillion action movies where the protagonists actions are motivated by the death of someone in their past, so in this case they'd just be using Robin instead of Thomas and Martha Wayne to provide that motivation.

I still suspect this movie will suck, as do most of Snyder's films, but I don't think continuity issues will be the reason for that.

Harley Quinn's not really more obscure than Hawkeye, is she? is she even less known than the Suicide Squad itself? her being in this movie is the least of its problem, if it's even a problem at all.

some dude, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 10:51 (ten years ago)

She is by far the most famous thing about it (apart from Mr J) - croupier's universe where 90s kids TV consumption makes you a nerdlinger is utterly bizarre.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 11:19 (ten years ago)

Even among comic nerds, Suicide Squad used to be more of a cult favourite than a big seller. But AFAIK a version of them has been introduced in the Arrow TV series (I quit watching it, so I haven't seen episodes featuring them), which might've raised their profile? Though I've no idea how popular Arrow is...

Tuomas, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 11:24 (ten years ago)

But yeah, Joker and Harley Quinn are way more well-known than any other SS members; the whole point of the series was to use mostly C-list villains, so any of them could be killed for real, which you obviously can't do with someone like Joker.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 11:26 (ten years ago)

Though ironically enough, the SS comic itself made some of its characters (like Deadshot) popular enough that they were guaranteed not to die.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 11:29 (ten years ago)

And I think the same is gonna happen with this movie: among the characters you have two popular Batman villains, one semi-popular Batman villain, one semi-popular Batman ally, a few characters who have become popular because of the Suicide Squad comics... and a couple of guys almost no one has ever heard of. So it's not hard to guess which of them are going to die.

just since people still seem confused, my point isn't that Harley Quinn and Robin are obscure parts of the batverse, but that they're almost oppositional to the one that was just in theaters a couple years ago. When you're trying to compete with a franchise as huge as marvel, where making $200m globally like Watchmen and Green Lantern did qualifies you as a bomb, because Marvel's working at the 700m-1.2billion level, dramatically changing the batstory - not with a new batmovie, but within a superman sequel and a suicide squad movie, seems at odds with getting EVERYBODY on board.

da croupier, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 18:32 (ten years ago)

da croupier, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 18:35 (ten years ago)

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I cannot wait for the inevitable book about the behind the scenes shenanigans currently taking place at DC/WB. You know there are people on the inside who are just as perplexed as the rest of us by the decisions currently being made.

Ape Pagoda (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 19 May 2015 18:44 (ten years ago)

i liked the explanation floated that they simply don't have a kevin feige - someone superinformed and respectful of the marvel legacy that speaks also speaks franchise producer-ese. Instead, Warner Bros - already in a weird bakesale mode that leads to movies with 100m budgets where Johnny Depp lives in an iPad - is throwing everything against the wall in film and tv, hoping SOMETHING sticks the way Nolan did.

It's been this way for ages - they scrapped an unrelated George Miller run Justice League movie with Armie Hammer as Batman when Nolan's movies grew legs. But the new wrinkle on the problem is thanks to Marvel's "here's how we're going to make a couple billion over the next five years" fanfare, Warner Bros shareholders want THEIR superheroverse to point at the bleachers. So they announce a flash movie that has nothing to do with the flash TV show. They've got Supergirl set to air AT THE SAME HOUR as Gotham, which may benefit CBS or Fox in terms of bragging rights but clearly not WB.

The good news for fans of cinematic art is that people like David Ayer and Zack Snyder are getting WAY more free reign than Marvel hands do, because DC is hungry for a visionary. The bad news is that I just said David Ayer and Zack Snyder.

da croupier, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 18:52 (ten years ago)

croupier's universe where 90s kids TV consumption makes you a nerdlinger is utterly bizarre.

nerdlingers are people who assume things have a massive global audience BECAUSE it was on 90s kids tv. for instance, "i know mad max" doesn't make you a nerdlinger. "HOW CAN THE SEQUEL TO A RECENT HIT WITH ALL THE ORIGINAL STARS DO BETTER THAN THE SEQUEL TO AN 80S CULT SERIES WITH NONE?" makes you a nerdlinger.

da croupier, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 19:19 (ten years ago)

Ape Pagoda (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 19 May 2015 19:29 (ten years ago)

I've seen the "no Kevin Feige" thing responded to with "WB/DC's Kevin Feige is Geoff Johns" - the problem there is that Johns is widely loathed and somewhat responsible for DC not even knowing what the fuck they're doing in comic-land.

tbf if Nolan and Bale WANTED to continue their Batman, i'm sure D.C. would be delighted to have them. but like Raimi and Maguire, they wanted to quit while they were ahead, so we get Affleck Batman and Leto Joker and whoever the hell is Spiderman next time around.

some dude, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 19:40 (ten years ago)

The dude who came up with "Red Lanterns are red because ANGER, Yellow Lanterns are yellow because FEAR" might be aces with respect to certain projects but he probably isn't the guy you want running a billion dollar movie franchise.

Ape Pagoda (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 19 May 2015 19:40 (ten years ago)

raimi didn't quit while he was ahead - he and sony broke up because he wanted spider man 4 to be a 300m movie where john malkovich played a flying cueball in green. don't get me wrong, I would have loved it, but I understand why they split.

i know they asked nolan to be the DCU's guiding hand in movieland, but he passed. smartly.

Raimi had a perfect line on Silver Age Spidey. It's funny that the post Raimi spider-flicks have continued to lean so heavily on 60s baddies and done them so badly.

Now it's been confirmed that a teased Harley Quinn storyline was dropped from Arrow because of her appearance in this movie (which would also explain why certain other characters have been sidelined or killed off). Which doesn't explain why the parallel Flashes are being allowed to happen.

The Freewheelin' Denny Dillon (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 26 May 2015 11:01 (ten years ago)

bit harder to sideline the title character than a supporting one - be interesting to see if anything becomes off-limits in the tv show when plans for the movie become clearer.

wonder who the villain for the movie will be, given that the tv show has already introduced a bunch of classic flash rogues and looks set to bring in more next season.

Task Force X-Rated, mor lik

Still, am far, FAR more interested in this than any BvS/JLA flick, due to the Ostrander/Yale years making the comic one of the most compelling/progressive titles on the Big Two's rosters during the Bronze/Chromium Age

If they can get the Waller/Deadshot/Boomerang interchange working, then I'm happy. If they can get a proper Waller/Batman interaction working, I'll be ecstatic.

There was some DC special that I didn't watch after Flash last night where I guess they debuted this trailer. Which I'm sure made synergistic sense to some DC exec but to many fans of the WB shows, it was probably more like "Hey, remember some of these characters from the shows you enjoy? Well, here they are again except they're not actually the same characters as the ones on TV and they're being played by different people! Isn't that fun?"

Well at least they managed to get the second TPB out this time, and you can pre-order the third and fourth on Amazon. But I agree that it doesn't necessarily mean anything, the last time they were gonna put out the second TPB, and you could pre-order that too, but then it suddenly vanished with no explanation. Let's just hope the movie + the existing fanbase for the comic nets in enough demand for these that they're gonna collect the whole series. (Though I'm still sour at DC for cancelling the Shade and Human Target TPBs before the whole series was collected.)

Spidey thought

Hey Amy - just a couple of rando thoughts from 35,000 LAX-JFK:

- A rising trend we see with Millennials are the really extreme forms of experiential exercise like Tough Mudder (a sort of filthy triathalon), the Color Run and even things like Hot Power Yoga, veganism etc. Millennials will often post “N.B.D.” on their social media after doing it , as in No Big Deal, also known as the “humble brag”.....wondering if Spidey could get into that in some way....he’s super athletic, bendy, strong, intense....and it’s all NBD to him, of course.

- EDM (electronic dance music) is the defining music for Millennials. Wondering if there’s an EDM angle somewhere with Spidey? His movements are beautiful, would be awesome with a killer DJ behind it

- Snapchat just launched a “story” functionality, which is sort of “day in the life of me” told in a series of snapchats that expire after 24 hours. It has a very VIP quality about it, since invitation only. Getting invited into Spidey’s Snapchat circle would be huge, and very buzzworthy and cool.

Akinnuoye-Agbaje told PEOPLE at the event that Leto's antics helped the rest of the cast form a tighter bond. "What was great was it really created the atmosphere of us against them, and it united us against them because we had a common enemy, which was now the Joker," he said.

"If I tell you some of the stuff he sent me, you'd be like, 'What is in this guys mind?' " he added of Leto's special gifts. "I got used condoms, I got all kinds of stuff and I was like, this is no longer a joke, this is personal."

Can't remember where we discussed Harley Quinn's new design, it's about 5 years old now. Did it come from a Batman videogame? Maybe this is a crazy idea but I can't help but suspect they changed it to make her easier to cosplay as.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 14 April 2016 10:18 (nine years ago)

used... condoms? ffs

dear boy, why not try acting?

a lad of balls (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 14 April 2016 10:28 (nine years ago)

I dunno, the 'new design' is basically just "1) It isn't the one-piece from the animated show 2) It is still in black and red 3) Other than that, go nuts". But this doesn't even hit #2: all of the shots I've seen of Margot Robbie are in red white and blue.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 14 April 2016 10:35 (nine years ago)

i mean i think the real answer as to why they changed the design is 'tits', pure and simple

a lad of balls (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 14 April 2016 10:45 (nine years ago)

More 'skin', I'd say - image google Harley Quinn costume and see how it was drawn when not on the animated series, 'tits' is not not a factor there.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 14 April 2016 10:57 (nine years ago)

c'mon, are you telling me 'tits' is not a motivating factor in this redesign?

http://comicsalliance.com/files/2011/06/untitled-7.jpg

a lad of balls (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 14 April 2016 11:02 (nine years ago)

I'm saying, it doesn't make a lot of sense to describe that as a redesign - Harley didn't look like that in the actual comic, or in the games since or before, or in the Connor / Palmiotti comic. 'more skin' is the common factor in all those depictions (though obviously anything is more skin than the original).

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 14 April 2016 11:09 (nine years ago)

i don't think i'm following you here - harley quinn had a 38-issue solo series where she wore the animated series-derived costume then (iirc) the new 52 suicide squad series gave her the tits-centric makeover

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B0Zd-piIUAAzwdI.jpg

a lad of balls (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 14 April 2016 11:54 (nine years ago)

Didn't that new design originally come from some Batman video game?

Tuomas, Thursday, 14 April 2016 11:58 (nine years ago)

Anyway, Andrew's point was that the old comic book Harley's Quinn's skintight costume, like most superheroine costumes, emphasized her tits well enough. The new costume shows more skin, but the shape of the boobs was already draw in detail in the old costume too, as the cover you posted shows.

Tuomas, Thursday, 14 April 2016 12:01 (nine years ago)

Yeah, my bad, the 'actual comic' I meant there was New Suicide Squad, which the "tits falling out" cover is not representative of iirc (not that NSS was a bold step forward or anything). But it's one cover in one comic in a vast range of stuff which is basically "Harley's not wearing the one-piece any more" so I'm not sure it makes sense as a "this is what the redesign was about".

NB I am really really not defending basically anything here except maybe the Connor / Palmiotti, one-piece 4 lyfe.

I know he's probably a human being and just living out his hopes and desires and taking work that interests him, but I really feel like he has two modes of "making people love Jared Leto"

there's the pretty boy/rock star side with his My So Called Life and music endeavors, and then his "oh wait, I can make people think I'm cool/cerebral" side he went into after a 99/00 run of "edgy" films

I still have no idea why the hell he did that movie where he plays Mark David Chapman

The MPAA obviously agreed, saying the rating was due to “sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behavior, and suggestive content and language.” Oh, it’s gonna suggest the hell out of some language and content, letting your mind fill in the blanks of all that awesome violence and language you’re not going to see or hear onscreen. Meanwhile, Deadpool continues to be the highest-grossing R-rated film in history. “Yeah, whatever. F that,” retorts Suicide Squad, because, hey, language.

In polite old New England vernacular, calling a misbehaved child "fresh" is tantamount to calling him a vile little shit. It's reserved for ill-tempered, snarky kids who cuss a lot. My mom calls Hot Topic "Fresh Topic," and referred in the '80s to Bart Simpson as "that fresh yellow boy." In every possible way, this movie looks like it's trying to be fresh.

"Who stole the soul of Suicide Squad? I'd say it's Ayer's willingness to go all limp-dick and compromise his hardcore action bona fides for a PG-13 crowdpleaser that would rather ingratiate than cut deep, or even cut at all."
-Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"A puzzlingly confused undertaking that never becomes as cool as it thinks it is, Suicide Squad assembles an all-star team of supervillains and then doesn't know what to do with them."
- Todd McCarthy, Hollywood Reporter

"So much happens in David Ayer's DC Comics adaptation Suicide Squad that by the end, it's as if you've seen nothing."
- Stephanie Zacharek, Time

"What a waste of a perfectly twisted Suicide Squad."
- Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun Times

Sorry, _was_ pitched versus re-pitched

mh, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 20:58 (eight years ago)

There were never any plans to build a Franchise off this though, the through path is Man of Steel -> Batman vs Superman from Man of Steel -> Wonder Woman from Batman vs Superman -> (Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman and Aquaman and Flash) from Batman vs Superman in the JLA -> Flash from JLA -> Aquaman from JLA -> JLA II. This is like Deadpool in that it's a scrappy little film (though much more expensive) without anyone that we'd expect to see again.

It sounded very much like they reshot and re-edited much of the movie at the eleventh hour as a reaction to the success of Deadpool.

As far as I know yes except instead of "success of Deadpool" read "critical kicking of Batman vs Superman"

a charisma-free shitlord (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 August 2016 21:13 (eight years ago)

Ayer's previous movies have, for the most part, been based around a group of cops or soldiers that have a very tense relationship with their peers, with an air of distrust compounded by in-group hazing or outright abuse.

You could look at The Fast and the Furious or S.W.A.T, both of which he wrote but didn't direct and tease out a PG13-ready concept but the former has too much heart and the latter ended up feeling very rote and fell into the generic "film version of a tv show" trap that a bunch of films around that time did. Nothing controversial enough to bruise what the studios felt was a useful property, nothing interesting enough to make it worth watching.

Bringing him on due to his stronger work, restricting it to PG13, and then recutting it via intense focus group studies.. probably doesn't have much of a chance

This is like Deadpool in that it's a scrappy little film (though much more expensive) without anyone that we'd expect to see again.

They had Affleck Batman in it from the beginning and the pitch in the commercials is "we need a team in case the Superman thing happens again"! Even if we never see any of these characters again, they're tying it directly into the backstory of their movie universe.

mh, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 21:21 (eight years ago)

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/suicide-squads-secret-drama-rushed-916693

A key concern for Warners executives was that Suicide Squad didn't deliver on the fun, edgy tone promised in the strong teaser trailer for the film. So while Ayer pursued his original vision, Warners set about working on a different cut, with an assist from Trailer Park, the company that had made the teaser.

In May, Ayer's more somber version and a lighter, studio-favored version were tested with audiences in Northern California. "If there are multiple opinions that aren't in sync, you go down multiple tracks — two tracks at least," says an insider. "That was the case here for a period of time, always trying to get to a place where you have consensus." Those associated with the film insist Ayer agreed to and participated in the process. Once feedback on the two versions was analyzed, it became clear it was possible to get to "a very common-ground place." (The studio-favored version with more characters introduced early in the film and jazzed-up graphics won.) Getting to that place of consensus, however, required millions of dollars worth of additional photography.

coup de grace:

Though reviews suggest the competing visions for the movie may have taken a toll (THR's critic calls the film "puzzlingly confused"), BTIG analyst Rich Greenfield says, "I've learned long ago there is not always a connections between reviews and box office and financial success."

mh, Wednesday, 3 August 2016 16:20 (eight years ago)

What a break for a trailer company.

thrill of transgressin (Eazy), Wednesday, 3 August 2016 16:25 (eight years ago)

short version: Ayer made a dark film about villains, Warners panicked because their gritty movie about heroes was panned, they test screened it and then shot a bunch of comedic bits to add to the film, then had the final thing edited by new editors, including the people who worked on the trailers

imo they ignored the substance of the criticism and decided to go the comedy route for some reason, probably some sort of chart involving box office payout and Deadpool or something

mh, Wednesday, 3 August 2016 16:26 (eight years ago)

xp no kidding! some trailers are better than the films they're promoting. apparently someone decided to cut out the middlemen.

It sounds like Ayer was put through the ringer, firing his agent and switching agencies only to switch back the next day. This is the kind of shit that drives directors away and leaves them whispering the words "I get final cut" to themselves as they rock back and forth on their barstool

mh, Wednesday, 3 August 2016 16:29 (eight years ago)

ayer is i think a pretty strong director and writer, his police flicks are very well-made, and he's made at least one film in that genre that is genuinely great ('end of watch'.) i think he was mostly left to his own devices on his previous films, i mean whatever their worth they've got a particular "voice".

nomar, Wednesday, 3 August 2016 17:39 (eight years ago)

otm, they're not the greatest films but his main strengths are his tonal consistency and emphasizing moral complexity over plot complexity. cutting in additional material seems the easiest way to override those strengths

mh, Wednesday, 3 August 2016 18:33 (eight years ago)

this reminds me of when my old roomate was working on GI Joe 2 - the original was panned so their original idea was to immediately kill off channing tatum's character. then 21 jump street came out and the studio decided the world demanded more channing tatum, and they ended up reshooting like half the movie.

carthago delenda est (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 3 August 2016 19:02 (eight years ago)

they're flogging the hell out of this thing on the late night talk shows and the clips are always as absurd as i imagine the whole film is.

AO Scott late to the party but came out swingin' with André Bazin references:

A series of tactical skirmishes with faceless minions — semi-zombies that can be slaughtered en masse, without a second thought — leads to a big final showdown. Spoiler alert: It’s essentially the final showdown from “Ghostbusters” and at least a half-dozen other recent blockbusters, with a few differences of what I guess we should call nuance. You can safely duck out of the theater and spend a good 20 minutes on the claw machine or Instagram, slipping back in to catch the final song and the sequel-teasing extra scene during the end credits.

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Wednesday, 3 August 2016 20:08 (eight years ago)

i can't think of a more boring movie reviewer than a.o. scott. so tedious to read. aren't there any fiery young critics out there the NYT could hire? get rid of the old lumps. this is the everything he says in that review about what the movie looks like: "The colors are lurid and smeary."

Bazin indeed!

scott seward, Wednesday, 3 August 2016 20:45 (eight years ago)

I tend to trust Dargis' taste

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Wednesday, 3 August 2016 20:48 (eight years ago)

i just never read any good writing from those guys. very review/synopsis-oriented and kind of a snooze. it's definitely not good criticism.

rb (soda), Wednesday, 3 August 2016 20:56 (eight years ago)

A.O. Scott is the weirdest champion of, like, the well-done medium budget traditional Hollywood movie. Every review he writes, lately, is like reading a review of an adequate hamburger.

rb (soda), Wednesday, 3 August 2016 21:00 (eight years ago)

Pete Wells could probably write better movie reviews.

scott seward, Wednesday, 3 August 2016 21:03 (eight years ago)

Heh, I was just reading on that Ask Greil Marcus page about how GM thinks AOS is such a great great critic - never read Scott's stuff, so was kinda intrigued (tho elsewhere on that site, GM produces a p tired old list - Thomson, Kael, Farber etc - when asked to name his fave film crits so...i dunno)

Out of interest, how does Scott bring Bazin in to a review of the Suicide Squad movie?

Again, don't really know Dargis crit - was put off her when Morbs quoted her saying that Spielberg belonged in the very top of the pantheon, which unreasonably enraged me. Whenever I look at that page of star ratings in Film Comment (I'm looking at em now), I don't agree w/ a lot of her rankings - 2 stars for Cemetery of Splendor, Embrace of the Serpent, The Lobster, 3 stars for Miles Ahead, no way

Foster Twelvetrees (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 3 August 2016 21:04 (eight years ago)

I don't agree with her on Cemetery or Embrace, that's for sure.

here's Scott's opening:

Scholars of classical Hollywood sometimes speak of “the genius of the system,” a phrase coined by the French critic André Bazin to refer to the ability of the old studio machinery to turn out works of inventive and beautiful popular art. But times change. “Suicide Squad,” the latest product of the DC-Warner Bros. partnership, is a good example of the idiocy of the system. This is not to say that it’s a completely terrible movie — it is certainly not worse than “X-Men: Apocalypse,” “Captain America: Civil War” or, heaven knows, “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” — but rather that its virtues and shortcomings are more systemic than specific. Written and directed by David Ayer (“Fury,” “End of Watch”), “Suicide Squad” is a so-so, off-peak superhero movie. It chases after the nihilistic swagger of “Deadpool” and the anarchic whimsy of “Guardians of the Galaxy” but trips over its own feet. The colors are lurid and smeary (when it’s not too dark to see what’s going on). The language pushes the far boundary of its PG-13 rating. The death toll is high, and the weapons are nasty. In spite of all the mayhem and attitude, the overall mood is cautious. For a film about a gang of outlaw brawlers, “Suicide Squad” is awfully careful to stay inside the lines.

In The Material Ghost, Gilberto Perez (a better film writer than Dargis or Scott, I'm willing to bet) writes in a footnote:

By "the genius of the system" Bazin did not exactly mean the Hollywood studio system... but something larger, the conjunction of a medium, its practioners, and its public, the social, cultural, historical juncture that allowed Hollywood's classical art to flourish.

Foster Twelvetrees (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 3 August 2016 21:17 (eight years ago)

something i've noticed just this week in the reviews of this film; phrasing to the effect of "you can cheerfully leave after the first 45 minutes and have not missed much" and "you can pop out to the candy counter and come back for the finale.." etc. i mean.. who on earth would actually do that?? i must have seen this kind of sentiment expressed 3 times across a handful of reviews. where's it coming from?? it seems like a whole new thing.

maybe filmmakers are realizing their movies are so terrible they have started incorporating viral marketing by promoting film counter candy/popcorn vendors into bad reviews

Neanderthal, Thursday, 4 August 2016 00:28 (eight years ago)

lots of people I know think RT actually are scoring the movies themselves and don't know how data aggregation works (tho RT's binary scoring system is a bit misleading to begin with, though they do post an 'average score' as well).

Neanderthal, Thursday, 4 August 2016 00:30 (eight years ago)

all the aggregation is dumb as hell, you have to weight using special sauce due to the fact rating systems are different. you either end up with "net positive/negative" which can mean everyone thought it was ok as a film but not that interesting (so it gets a really high percent) or an attempt to average out numerical ratings which is another shitshow

90% on rotten tomatoes, iirc, means that people thought it was ok, not that it rates a 9/10

mh, Thursday, 4 August 2016 01:02 (eight years ago)

so if something fails as a film but is interesting, depending on the reviewer set, you end up with abyssmal scores but it could appeal to you

I guess that might be this film for some people, but it doesn't mean the site is wrong, per se.

mh, Thursday, 4 August 2016 01:03 (eight years ago)

yeah, RT I find useful only cos I know how to read it and still actually read the attached reviews rather than just going "OMG IT GOT AN 83%!".

Metacritic tends to be 'more accurate' iirc.

Neanderthal, Thursday, 4 August 2016 01:18 (eight years ago)

no they are all bad

mh, Thursday, 4 August 2016 02:06 (eight years ago)

yeah Metacritic is great. also there's a cool 'disparity' feature on there too, where you can see films with the highest ratings by the site users that have been slated by the critics. there's not enough of that kind of thing on these sites IMO.

BvS was lousy. but not even in a bad movie kind of way. just dull and unpleasant and loud and confusing.

has anyone seen the Ultimate Cut? does it explain anything?

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 4 August 2016 05:16 (eight years ago)

I have only seen the Ultimate Cut. It was dull, unpleasant, loud, confusing, and very long. There was a solid one hour stretch where there were no superheroics of any kind.

great Canadian prog-psych debut from 1969 (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 4 August 2016 05:43 (eight years ago)

I've seen only Ultimate Cut too. It wasn't confusing or anything, but I think it's notable that it takes over two hours to set the titular conflict between Batman and Supes, and even then, A) they still can't do it without using the kidnapping of a loved one as justification, and B) it still makes both heroes look like idiots. But this is a movie where Batman shoots and kills a whole bunch of people without any care, and where Superman acts like a mopey teenager (and kills two villains too, despite the outrage the previous movie's ending caused), so they might've just as well been any random characters, they have little to do with the Supes and Bats as they've been established for the last 70+ years.

We also asked Leto if he was upset about any of his scenes getting cut – as previously reported – to which he responded.

“Were there any that didn’t get cut? I’m asking you, were there any that didn’t get cut? There were so many scenes that got cut from the movie, I couldn’t even start. I think that the Joker… we did a lot of experimentation on the set, we explored a lot. There’s so much that we shot that’s not in the film.

“If I die anytime soon, it’s probably likely that it’ll surface somewhere. That’s the good news about the death of an actor is all that stuff seems to come out.”

As IGN left the room we told Leto we hope he doesn’t die anytime soon, to which he rather darkly responded “We all die.”

I really don't see why this movie is really considered all that much worse than other super hero movies. Really all of them, even the good ones are pretty dumb. I thought it was fun, it's a comic book movie. You got a couple panels of origin for each character then you got a big extended fight scene to go take out the monster. That's like half the super hero comics ever made. It is totally laid out like a video game where each character gets a theme song.

Waller is flat out evil in this thing, which might be some anti-govt subtext to the whole thing. To say it's all that much less hammy than the stuff in those Capt. America movies is absurd. It's all pulp soda pop stuff anyway.

Andrew Farrell, Sunday, 7 August 2016 12:49 (eight years ago)

I don't feel like this movie *was* fun is the issue. the first 40 minutes of character introductions and training exercises and wisecracks was actually a blast, and it was stylistically 'comic book'-y.

Unlike Guardians of the Galaxy, though, which only had a handful of characters to introduce you to, there are an assload of characters in this film and some of them you barely get introduced to since they jump into the big battle so quickly. I forgot Killer Croc was even in it until he said his one line ("I'm beautiful!"). I didn't want detailed back stories on each one, no, but the issue was they tried to hedge their bets by having a momentum-stalling bar scene where everybody sobbed around a table and drank.

there also don't really frame the stakes very well so it's hard to give much of a shit about any of the various battles because you don't really care if they win them or not, just that they 'look cool' (and outside of the first five minutes - it gets repetitive after the 90th mud person gets iced).

Honestly, the scenes with the Joker could have been deleted outside of Harley's introduction and nobody would have missed them. Plus Joker dresses like a gangsta rapper in this and seems more like he's doing impressions of past Jokers than bringing his own thing to the table. He does have the "deranged" tattoo too.

I think Robbie does a good job at Harley but they basically just prance her about sexually the whole film after her introduction.

Definitely not as bad as other DC flicks in that there are parts of it that *are* fun (I did like the Nolan Batman films if that discredits me) but I can certainly tell the difference between it and a Marvel film.

seems like DC is 0 for 3 since kickstarting their own movieverse (I hate that word) with Man of Steel.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 7 August 2016 15:22 (eight years ago)

I really don't see why this movie is really considered all that much worse than other super hero movies. Really all of them, even the good ones are pretty dumb.

fwiw i saw X-Men Apocalypse last night and was kind of taken back by how much drama and real character insight they had, the whole Magneto sideplot in the beginning was just heartbreaking and felt like it had some deeper truths in it. then you had Professor X's unrequited love thing. felt like i was watching Real People i could actually relate to. obv i don't want to turn it into a Marvel vs DC thing cos i could care less but thinking back to Superman and even Batman, you just can't relate to those characters at all.

hoo boy this is a real lumpy, ugly mess of a movie. they seem to have butchered the second act almost to nothing and what's left makes very little sense. there's a fun metagame in watching jai courtney's hair and beard change length and style from scene to scene - i guess they stopped giving a fuck about continuity once the reshoots started?

it feels like they left a lot of jared leto on the cutting-room floor but he manages to be catastrophically poor in the scenes which survive. he's ACTING SO HARD it's embarrassing to watch.

i liked killer croc's makeup tho!

yeah I don't get the "Jared's a great joker, he just didn't get much to do" line, I mean the latter is certainly true, but he seems to be doing actor karaoke most of the time, imitations of past Jokers in a gumbo rather than bringing any real personality to it

part of the obvious editing problems, like how many times did we need to see Diablo burning up that prison yard

Nhex, Friday, 12 August 2016 21:30 (eight years ago)

it really feels like it was hacked to pieces and stitched back together in a hurry.

- katana and slipknot are introduced in such a rush it almost seems like an afterthought
- harley quinn's flashbacks seem dropped in at random
- the scene with enchantress and rick flag in the underground not only makes no sense (why are they setting a bomb to go off in two seconds?!) but is repeated twice for some reason
- the end of the first act, which i'd say is where the squad get together in one place before heading off to midway city, seems to run straight into the start of what looks like the third act, with Enchantress starting up her destruction machine, before looping back to an incoherent second act where the squad learn to work together as they fight up the building to free waller. i'm guessing most of the what makes up the second act is a reshoot, since they supposedly shot extra to add more action and this section is almost all fighting and is pretty much entirely disposable. it also totally muddies what the squad's mission is supposed to be - they get put into action, it seems, to stop the enchantress but they're actually they're instead to... rescue waller? i genuinely did not follow this at all
- who shot down the squad's helicopter? was it the joker's goons? we never see where the shots come from, do we?

pokemon go speed run (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 12 August 2016 21:40 (eight years ago)

also I can't stress enough how much it bothered me that rick flag sometimes had a goatee and short hair and sometimes a shitty beard and longer, slicked-back hair

a letter from a disgruntled former warners employee takes aim at snyder and execs:

An Open Letter To Warner Bros CEO Kevin Tsujihara About Layoffs, Zack Snyder, and Donuts

When I left my screening of Suicide Squad last week, I was angry. I was annoyed and let down and frustrated as well, but mostly I was just angry.

Look, I'm a big dork. So of course I thought this trainwreck of a movie did a major disservice to the characters, concept, cast, and crew, but that wasn't why I was mad. Yes, it is unfathomable to me that Warner Bros could mess up a movie starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and The Joker so completely. But that just had me flummoxed.

I was angry because I couldn't stop thinking about you, Kevin Tsujihara.

A lot of fans might be angry (and rightfully so) because you keep completely whiffing at properties that they are desperate to love and enjoy, but this is a little more personal for me. See, I am a former Warner Bros employee. I have so much respect for your studio. I love every square inch of that magical backlot, from Stars Hollow to the fitness center I always meant to use. The people I worked with during my time with your company are now close friends. On my last day, I hugged them and I told them I loved them.

I was also there in 2014, when you made the decision to lay off 10 percent of your workforce. It was a terrible year. Let me catch you up: Every morning I woke up with a pit in my stomach, because I assumed that would be the day I lost my job. Every day I saw someone packing up their desk, or carrying a box to their car. I can not describe to you the relief I felt when my department was told we were safe, or the guilt I felt afterwards walking through the halls of my office with that relief.

But out of all that, the thing that really sticks with me is the memo you sent to all of us. Let me refresh you on my favorite part:

I wanted you to hear directly from me about our plans for the studio. In recent days, we have started to hear rumors here at the company and to read misinformation in the press, so I'd like to set the record straight. I know that the hard work and dedication of every employee around the world is the key to Warner Bros.' success, and I am sorry for the distraction this situation brings to the workplace.

At Warner Bros., we work with the world's most extraordinary storytellers, and our focus has always been to provide the creative environment and financial resources they need to realize their vision. Our commitment to that won't change. In fact, we're investing more than ever in our film and television productions.

This is how you opened a memo about layoffs. "Hey guys, we work hard for the people telling stories here and we want to make sure those visions are realized." The balls on you.

That year we pursued the storytelling vision of Adam Sandler's Blended and Clint Eastwood's Jersey Boys. Failures. We pursued a potentially great summer movie like Edge of Tomorrow and completely botched its release. Same with Man From UNCLE. We dug in our heels and hoped The Hobbit Trilogy would somehow stop being a mediocre case of diminishing returns. Talented, loyal people packed their boxes and went home while your story tellers dropped the ball.

One could argue that this was not your fault. That you inherited former CEO Barry Meyer's agenda and were merely trying to correct the course of an ocean liner heading for an iceberg.

I would not make this argument. And here's why: I wrote this letter last year. I actually started forming it in my head after Man of Steel was a box office failure instead of the modern classic tentpole you were expecting.

I kept holding off on doing anything with it because of one title: Suicide Squad. Zack Snyder's Dawn of Justice was a fiasco, but here comes this plucky little dark adventure about antiheroes. I love David Ayer. I love Harley Quinn. I love Will Smith. Put the letter in a drawer. The ship isn't sinking anymore. Everything is fine. There's no way this movie is bad.

And here we are. I got back from my screening and dusted this sucker off. You, your executive team, and the vision of your 'extraordinary storytellers' that resulted in the loss of around one thousand jobs seem intent on crashing the ship into as much shit as you can find in the ocean by making inane decisions over and over again.

Zack Snyder is not delivering. Is he being punished? Assistants who were doing fantastic work certainly were. People in finance and in marketing and in IT. They had no say in a movie called Batman V Superman only having 8 minutes of Batman fighting Superman in it, that ends because their moms have the same name. Snyder is a producer on every DC movie. He is still directing Justice League. He is being rewarded with more opportunity to get more people laid off. I'm assuming you yourself haven't been financially affected in any real way. You and your studio are the biggest lesson about life one can learn: The top screws up and the bottom suffers. Peter Jackson phones it in and a marketing supervisor has to figure out a plan B for house payments.

Your uneven Hall H presentation at Comic Con this year was a ridiculous mess that ranged from rushed to boring. When Marvel announced their full slate of films with a fun fan event several years ago, you announced yours on a shareholder conference call.
You just don't get it. And it's not just DC movies, it's your whole slate. Jupiter Ascending. Get Hard. Hot Pursuit. Max. Vacation. Pan. Point Break. Fucking PAN, you jerk. People lost their jobs and you decided Pan was a good idea. You think another Jungle Book is a good idea.
What are you even doing? I wish to God you were forced to live out of a car until you made a #1 movie of the year. Maybe Wonder Woman wouldn't be such a mess. Don't try to hide behind the great trailer. People inside are already confirming it's another mess. It is almost impressive how you keep rewarding the same producers and executives for making the same mistakes, over and over.

If I worked at a donut stand, and I kept fucking up donuts, I'd be fired. Even if I made a tiny decent one every now and then, it doesn't matter. I'm gonna get fired.

I love that studio, and you're allowing it to sink. It's not about making movies for 'the fans' and not 'the critics.' It's not even about 'ruining childhoods.' It's about protecting livelihoods.

It's time to wake up and make the fucking donuts, Kevin.

The two of them look so similar it would've been pretty fucking weird if Hardy had actually taken the part of Flagg, as was originally intended.

Saw it this evening after several beers.

Messy as shit, but in no way making me think this some massively fascist shit as every take a Zac Snyder DC inspires.

Here, the actors actually work well together, in parts, and the film has enough bits to make one curious exactly how much the studio effed over David Ayer

All-in-all: I hope John Ostrander got a big-ass check from this, as without him and his late wife, DC would have no film.

Found it most interesting that Will Smith actually portrayed a character, rather than just Will Smithing all over the place.

Sentient animated cat gif (kingfish), Sunday, 14 August 2016 07:49 (eight years ago)

saw this at the drive-in, yeah it's a total mess, possibly a worse movie than BvS. Joker was meh, Harley Quinn was eh, Will Smith was alright but it is hardly convincing to have Will Smith say "Remember, we're the bad guys". sure you are, Will Smith, sure you are.

when they killed the witch at the end of the movie by stabbing her heart i was like..... why didn't you guys just do that at the start?

lots of horrible editing. just long stretches of boringness and then THEYWOULDHAVEAFLASHBACKHERE'SJoKERDOINGTHISTHING and then it's gone. i had heard the trailer company re-edited the movie, they should have put more neon stuff into it. as it is, about halfway through it just goes into dull dark territory.

Waller was well-cast but really poorly written. again, she had the heart of the enchantress the entire time, and was even seen stabbing it out of frustration, and yet it never occurred to just destroy the heart and kill all the evil magic beings taking over the world? the bit where Waller was leaving in her heli and then a second later it was crashing was so poorly edited. WHAT HAD HAPPENED? did someone shoot the helicopter down? one scene they are flying away and then second later she is crashing. i felt like i had missed something, and i probably did cos it was edited out. which is confusing cos the other helicopter is crashing too ....?

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 14 August 2016 23:49 (eight years ago)

yes! I was baffled that the movie went from neon overload craziness in the first hour to really drab gray for the rest of it. i don't have anything else to say that hasn't been said here, it was a mess, but that first hour/half-hour was at least kinetic and looked cool.

three months pass...

good news everyone!

David Ayer is back in the business of DC comic villains.

The filmmaker, who directed Warner Bros.’ all-bad guy comic book movie Suicide Squad, is reuniting with that film’s star, Margot Robbie, for Gotham City Sirens, a feature project that will showcase the top female villains from the DC stable, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Ayer will direct and produce the project with Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn, the part-time girlfriend of the Joker who is currently DC's most popular female character. Robbie also is executive producing.

Sirens was a recent comic series from DC that focused on the popular villainesses from Batman’s rogue gallery. Among them were Quinn; Catwoman, Batman’s sometime love interest; and Poison Ivy, who uses plants and their toxins to get what she wants.

Geneva Robertson-Dworet, a top female writer in the action sphere who also has penned scripts for the Tomb Raider remake and Warners' own Sherlock Holmes 3, is writing the screenplay.

Tuesday, news broke that Suicide Squad director David Ayer will stay in the DC film universe with an all-female film called Gotham City Sirens, which will star Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. But buried beneath that news is the potential of two other films based on this summer’s DC team up.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, in addition to Gotham City Sirens, DC and Warner Bros. are working on a Suicide Squad sequel and a spinoff featuring Will Smith’s Deadshot. That’s three films that will directly follow up on Suicide Squad.

come to think of it they did give ledgeridoo an oscar for similar nonsense but that was more a case of a genuinely talented and charismatic actor with an unfortunate hobby, in hindsight tho decades of rewarding macho bores for offscreen jerkoff marathons was always going to lead us to this infantile bullshit and a zero tolerance approach should have been taken from the off

the deeply silly praxis of Hollywood babies doesn't offend me if it means we get to enjoy the slobbering antics of a day-lewis or a dicaprio but staying in character, like in your real actual life, is just stupid, and staying in character as something called "the joker" or "the batman" means you deserve to be mocked until the end of time - and if you're harassing and bullying your co-workers you need to be fired and blacklisted even if the performance doesn't turn out to be worthless garbage

This at least possibly obviates the plans which were underway for WB to release, probably within a year or so of one another, Joaquin Phoenix's Joker movie and a Suicide Squad sequel featuring Jared Leto's Joker.

Whatever else you might say about them, I think it's really cool that WB hires so many people afflicted with such profound brain trauma that they might otherwise have been rendered unemployable.

I'm also impressed at Warner/DC's sheer determination to remake so many movies that no one liked to begin with. Perhaps they should alter their schedule to ONLY develop new versions of Suicide Squad.

from the dceu lineup linked in that article:

Of these, the one we likely know the most about is Birds of Prey, which will team up Harley Quinn with the Huntress, Black Canary, Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya. It will star Margot Robbie, be written by Christina Hodson, and directed by Cathy Yan—who allegedly pitched an approach so intriguing that Warner Bros. fast-tracked production, bumping other movies further down the line, including Gotham City Sirens, another Harley team up (this time villain-based, with Poison Ivy and Catwoman) set to be tackled by Suicide Squad’s David Ayer.

adam the (abanana), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 23:15 (six years ago)

There was comic called Gotham City Sirens starring those three characters a few years ago... It was mostly based on the fact that all three have become more like anti-heroes than villains in recent times, as ongoing superhero series with a pure villain protagonist are pretty hard to pull off. Obviously it had a lot of cheesecake too.

They should have just rebooted the entire universe with Challengers of the Unknown and given that the Gunn. He'd be perfect for it. Then build towards a New Frontier-style thingy.

I wonder if the people who are tasked with rebooting a franchise strategize about what they can do to ease the undertaking of whoever will, within the next half decade, be tasked with rebooting their reboot. Like you don't want your reboot to be too good or overly-ambitious because that would be unfair to the journeyman director who will be reshaping your reshaped vision but whose experience in the industry at this point is limited to a few episodes of Blue Bloods.

Jai Courtney is impressive in that he is the least memorable person in the universe. I've seen several movies where I know he had a decent part and I remember the character existing but I'll be damned if I could tell you what he or the characters he played looked like. It takes special skill to be more anonymous than Sam Worthington, IMO.

I haven't seen a single billboard or bus stop ad for it. I don't watch TV with ads much so no idea if there were commercials. but the hype seemed significantly less than previous DC films. Besides, what are people gonna go see this month? Sonic the Hedgehog?

😬

Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog exploded onto screens this Presidents' Day weekend, delivering the largest opening weekend ever for a video game adaptation to go along with an estimated $68 million, four-day holiday debut. Meanwhile Sony's Fantasy Island and Universal's The Photograph are neck-and-neck in a race for third and Searchlight's Downhill finished just inside the top ten.

With an estimated $57 million three-day performance, Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog topped last May's Pokemon Detective Pikachu to become the largest three-day opening ever for a video game adaptation. The film, based on the iconic SEGA video game, is expected to finish around $68 million for the four-day holiday frame, which would be the fourth largest Presidents' Day opening ever, with some anticipating the film will top $70 million by the time the long, holiday weekend is over.

Sonic not only performed well this weekend, it was a hit with audiences, earning an "A" CinemaScore to go along with a 95% audience rating on RottenTomatoes. Opening weekend crowds were 56% male with 70% of the audience coming in aged under 25 years old.

i feel like idris elba deserves his own tv channel where you can just flip it on any time of day and hooray! there's idris elba! but all the parts that don't have idris elba should be excised. this looks like you will have to endure a lot of non-idris elba content to get to the idris elba bits.

Jai Courtney was asked if he watched The Terminator to prepare for the role of Kyle Reese, and he hadn't even done that much, he did no research, nothing, he just rocked up on set."

this was shockingly enjoyable! jumps directly into the story with minimal bullshit and the filming is crisp and engaging. pointlessly over the top with its sadism and gore but there's a zany glee that mostly mitigates the nastiness. ultraviolence minus the grim and gritty is far less insufferable. Everybody is having a great time on screen and the FX and fighting and set pieces and general direction are all fun. The only issue is length: this shit being two hours is ludicrous. The "by the time I finish my large popcorn, we are in denouement" rule needs reinstating stat.

Liked it a ton. The only part that had me doubting it was the set-up with all the camera moves. 1) Re: showing a gun and not paying it off, was expecting a different ending for Polka Dot Man, after his mention of having to void the dots twice daily - maybe Harley's javelin pierces the eye, King Shark chucks PDM through, PDM happily explodes and dissolves Starro? The climbing rats didn't seem threatening until they got inside to eat. 2) After Deadpool 2, the initial bit wasn't as surprising, though I'd have loved a "we're f*cking distracting bait" recognition once TDK's arms started slapping. 3) Best use of Harley yet. The spinning/escape scene was a DCU highlight in a "commits to action like Keanu" way. 4) Killing Flag was a surprise. 5) John Cena was great. I totally bought what could have been a overly-ridiculous character. 6) Starro being a fave Justice League villain, thought they did it ... justice. Its final words were poignant. 7) Viola Davis just inhabiting Amanda Waller's rage. 8) And just now mentioning Idris Elba, which shows how jammed this movie was.

the body of a spider... (scampering alpaca), Friday, 6 August 2021 20:00 (three years ago)

Don't know how good this was, but it wasn't bad, especially considering I don't know anything about any of the characters. Gunn knows and loves his b-movie and exploitation tropes. Plus, a few weirdly beautiful scenes.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 August 2021 02:40 (three years ago)

Oh, and Gunn is remarkably adept at realizing the comedic potential of former pro wrestlers, though I guess Cena has been good at it for a while now.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 August 2021 02:48 (three years ago)

He tweeted something a while back about Bautista that I liked (cant find the tweets but found the quotes) - “The difference between Dave & many wrestler-actors is when you look in his eyes on set he’s in the place he’s supposed to be, not thinking about what he’s going to do next," … "One of the things I deal with a lot with actors who have been a part of other performing arts (ie wrestling or comedy) is to get them to STOP JUGGLING and JUST BE. It’s not your job to entertain us - it’s simply your job to be present to the moment in front of you -And to treat it honestly. I never really had to teach that to @DaveBautista. His rawness set him apart from the first moment I met him. It was merely a matter of creating a space where he could come and share himself with all of us."

turns out that Deadshot was in the first one!! but he was played by Will Smith and Idris didn’t want to play a character previously played by Will Smith, so that is why Deadshot is called Bloodsport in it, instead of being called Deadshot, or the character Bloodsport being in it (and called Bloodsport)

lol they will get Diesel in one of these DC films, i bet

It feels like they totally wrote it originally for Deadshot, what with the whole motivation being to help his daughter out that was shown in the first movie, but thankfully they changed their characters just enough. The jail conversion between the Bloodsport and his kid was hilarious and wouldn't have happened with the Smith incarnation of Deadshot, who is pretty much Assassin Dad of the Year in SS '16.

also by changing it they've said it's so they can bring back Smith for a SS3 if it happens
