Is anyone NOT ill?

I have only just got over a cold and now have another one. I just don't know what my immune system DOES all day. Lots of other people seem to be ill as well. If you're not, what's your secret?

Archel (Archel), Monday, 14 October 2002 08:55 (twenty-three years ago)

me, I'm not. But it's sheer luck, I was a bit bad last week but it only lasted a day, mind you Vicky has been ill all weekend so I wouldn't be surprised if I was ill soon.

chris (chris), Monday, 14 October 2002 08:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I have not had a cold or anything similar since I started running regularly, four yrs ago. Can't be co-incidence.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 14 October 2002 08:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Very sore lungs and throat, not sure why either.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 14 October 2002 08:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I keep sneezing but I don't think that counts as ill.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Never having a cold again vs having to RUN. Hm.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I am ill. Hence no promised Freaky Trigger updates. I have had the guts since Saturday evening. It's nasty.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm fine, sneeze now and again, but I think I must be allergic to something.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I've had an extremely lousy cold for a fortnight. Hope it clears up by Thursday 'cos I don't want to miss out on meeting Jeff.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 14 October 2002 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i am well. but a lot of ppl around me have a cold so prob for not much longer is the ans.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Going to Hospital this afternoon for a check-up on my lung (which recently collapsed) but am healing up ok after the op. Thinking of taking up Dr C's example on the exercise front. Get Well Soon Archel, Tom, + Marcello (really looking forward to the CoM's take on Marc Acardipane incidently).

stevo (stevo), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel great this morning. Bizarrely. I think it was the cheese sandwich before bed that clinched it.

Lara, Monday, 14 October 2002 09:21 (twenty-three years ago)

It's the first day in ages that I haven't been sneezing constantly. I'm always sneezing, whether it's a cold, dust allergies (these play up majorly in the newsagents where I work) or hayfever (less of a problem as winter draws in). I feel 100% today!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:21 (twenty-three years ago)

and i hope tom and marcello get better as well.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:24 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not ill but i have period pains so i feel rotten. my cold prevention technique involves eating loads of oranges, taking echinacea tablets and getting lots of sleep as soon as i feel a cold coming on, it works pretty well.

angela (angela), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I do that too but it always seems to be too late.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Bah humbug.

I am ill on my birthday.
I am in work on my birthday.
I have a twisted ankle on my birthday.
I WIN (on my etc.).

Although, the cold was a (birthday) present from the boy, so small mercies, eh?

I also recommend necking echinacea (in preferred format of pills or suspended in alcohol for full-on laudanum-retro-chic) like there's no tomorrow, and doing as little as pissible for a couple of days.

*snoozing in the workplace*

Hey! I could bring down Haringey Council by use of deadly chemicals weapons i.e. coughing, spluttering, sneezing etc. Rah.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Christ. POSSIBLE. Although 'pissible' is a really good word.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope that the ancient dusty bottle of echinacea I have unearthed from behind my monitor will do more good than harm...

Archel (Archel), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Although I'm not ill at the moment, I can recommend whiskey, hot water and honey (3:2:1 ratio) and smoking as many Marlboro Lights as is humanly possible in an evening-type period as a cure. No cold can survive that. If you do, of course.

lol p xx, Monday, 14 October 2002 09:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Archel has an entire pharmacy behind her computer.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 14 October 2002 10:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh, whisky, I forgot about that. May have to enjoy this evening after trauma of dinner with family. However, I only have immensely cheap stuff that I bought purely for the amusing tartan label (and mixing). Will require lots of honey, methinks.

Archel, whatever does not kill you will only make you very ill. As they say. Go on, you know you want to - does the bottle have a label with 'DRINK ME' written on it in a Tenniel-esque manner?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 14 October 2002 10:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I've had a headache and nasty hot feeling for 7 days now. I have a sinus infection and a fever and I generally feel a bit like shite. I think this is end-of-academic-year-induced-unwellness.

toraneko (toraneko), Monday, 14 October 2002 11:38 (twenty-three years ago)

awww get well soon all you guys! i too am ill with the remnants of a cold, and as Tom says THE GUTS. i also had to have a blood test this morning and amused the Nurse by almost losing my marbles about it (i hate ppl sticking needles into me) still i was very grown up about it. in the end.

katie (katie), Monday, 14 October 2002 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom are your guts El Guts Espanol?

Katie do you like it if ANIMALS stick needles into you? This is veganism gone mad etc etc.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 14 October 2002 11:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I want a cigarette and yet my lungs are very very sore, it's a dilemma that won't solve itself.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 14 October 2002 11:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I have not had a cold or anything similar since I started running regularly, four yrs ago. Can't be co-incidence.

Supposedly regular, moderate exercise boosts your immune system.

Me: physically okay, mentally...let's not go there.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 14 October 2002 11:51 (twenty-three years ago)

tim i will only tolerate tofu needles wielded by kittens or puppies. and they are not allowed to take blood, only strawberry flavoured soya milk.

katie (katie), Monday, 14 October 2002 11:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I have bronchitis again, but also a very kind doctor who is used to me (and it) and gives me antibiotics and other potions to make me well.. I think I love him.

luna.c (luna.c), Monday, 14 October 2002 11:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Katie, you realise we have to cut you now (dressed as kitties) and see if that's really what flows through your veins, or just a desparate plea for attention.

Graham (graham), Monday, 14 October 2002 11:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim no, and just as well since Spanish Guts affects the whole nervous system - and is a chronic condition!

I have the Real Actual Guts.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 14 October 2002 11:57 (twenty-three years ago)

nah graham it's definitely real blood. i saw it *faints*

katie (katie), Monday, 14 October 2002 12:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Now you're just trying to hide it. You have strawberry blood and we all want to see it. Stop being so selfish.

Graham (graham), Monday, 14 October 2002 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Guess what kids.

I'm not ill.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 14 October 2002 12:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Real Actual Guts

For a second I thought this said Rectal Guts.

Sam (chirombo), Monday, 14 October 2002 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I survived over lunchtime after the suspect echinacea. But now I am wishing there really was an entire pharmacy behind my computer so I could take something to make me sleep through the rest of the horrible afternoon this is turning out to be. Why do 100 students want to register all at the same time? I strongly disapprove of this sheep instinct fostered by our academic institutions.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 14 October 2002 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

What's GUTS?

I'm not sick, but when I'm really feeling crappy, I treat myself to a good ol' Hot Totty (brandy, lemon, honey).

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 14 October 2002 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn, I was going to say PTEE TO THREAD!!!!

I'm not sick, but my wife is. She has and audition tomorrow = this bout of bronchial nonsense is the WORST THING EVER TO HAPPEN.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 October 2002 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

i am hot totty.

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 14 October 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Have been having lots of hot honey and lemon... obv it's the lack of alcohol that's causing the ongoing illness. But a quick mental inspection of my fridge tells me it contains no brandy or whisky, only Pimms and red wine and some Budweiser. I wonder if I can make an effective toddy from these... maybe just an effective route to oblivion.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 14 October 2002 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

well, whatever, i'm here if you want me.

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 14 October 2002 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Hot honey + lemon + Bud = RUN FOR THE HILLS.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 October 2002 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Or run for the toilet, certainly.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 14 October 2002 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

My head hurts. I am not happy about this.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 14 October 2002 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

The Guts = scientific name for variety of stomach ailments.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 14 October 2002 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

(I am not ill, but I am def and col' chillin'.)

SEE WHAT I DID THERE, YO? (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 October 2002 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

i see, yo. i'm the deffest brother on this block. so speak up.

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 14 October 2002 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm stupid about sicknesses - the moment I start to feel slightly better I go hard with either work or play, and then wonder why illness returns and/or lingers. This is doubly so considering that, being a former ten-week-premature baby, my lungs turn to mush the moment I get the slightest cold.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 14 October 2002 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a runny nose and the sneezes on Sunday, I thought, oh, here we go, but it seems to have gone. But there does seem to be a lot of it about, which people keep repeatedly telling me is down to "the change in the weather" - okay! I believe you! Jeez! - but, still, didn't it rain?

DavidM (DavidM), Monday, 14 October 2002 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been sick for a week. I've had about eighteen cups of tea in the past three days.

Jody Beth Rosen, Monday, 14 October 2002 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I have just stumbled into my office, having fallen down the stairs of a 220 bus coming into work. I don't think anything's broken but I think there's a delayed reaction in terms of pain, shock etc. (otherwise I wouldn't be typing this). I think I will need to go to Orthopaedics downstairs and get it seen to (good job I work in a hospital).

Starting to get numbness in my right arm now so I will need to stop typing. I think this might rule me out for Thursday's meet up, I'll just have to wait and see. This and my cold as well...

In truth I am feeling a bit shaken up, so please email me 'cos I think I will need cheering up :-(

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 15 October 2002 06:30 (twenty-three years ago)

sent one.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I am feeling like shit. My guts have been replaced with a cold which is moving from miserable to stinking at a horrid pace.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not ill, but i threw up this morning, yo.
i have no idea why.

g-kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

five months pass...
REVIVE! (Not SARS related.)

I'd forgotten that the wise Dr. C recommends running. But I have in fact been going running a bit lately (YES!) and well, I've not been ill for a few weeks...

...any current ailments to complain of?

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

For once I am not ill, but now I've said that I have the ph34r, coz the germses is listening and they'll come and get me!

smee (smee), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a headache. I'm blaming it on my computer monitor.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had one cold all cold season, and it was way back in october (in fact the one I was afflicted with at the top of this thread!). I normally get over one cold and then get another one straight away. I wish I could say it was because I'm being good and running, but unfortunately I'm as much of a couch potato this year as any other. It's even more amazing that Chris has had loads of stinkers, and I haven't sucumbed.

Of course, famous last words.....

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I have had a cold for the last week, it's been a bit annoying because often I find myself in the car with no tissue paper to blow my nose. I don't like doing the footballer cover one nostril and blow thing, but I have been reduced to that lately.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Pah, illness schmillness.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronana - Ewwwww! Gimme your address, I'll send you some hankies to keep in the car!!!!!!!!!!!!!

smee (smee), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not that bad, I took a scenic route and opened the window.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't totally see how covering one nostril precludes the need for a tissue... or does it not?

A cheery friend at work pointed out that once I have a cold, it'll stay around for ever because I'm exposed to so many students from all over the country/world, arriving every few weeks, and new mutations will just take hold while my immune system is weak.

So am trying to keep it strong! (I haven't even begun to worry about SARS yet, and I don't think I will.)

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Despite feeling a bit crap yesterday, which is most likely down to tiredness from not sleeping properly and being rather harrassed I feel pretty good now. Not ill in the slightest. It won't last long.

chris (chris), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a cold and a really bad sinus headache. I would have called in sick, but if I did the library would have to stay closed for the day since my boss is also away on jury duty.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

:-( Nicole has the health evil! And the job evil, for that matter.

I've got a lingering roughness in my lungs from something, but it seems to be fading out.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 April 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Archel you're not making this easier, I meant index finger pressed horizontally on one nostril, and sharp exhale of air out the other, Andy Townsend used to be good at it.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 3 April 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Enough! That mental picture is gonna make me ill!!

smee (smee), Thursday, 3 April 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

'Air'?

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 3 April 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

no no more, I have already said too much

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 3 April 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Too right you have. I'm going to vomit now....

smee (smee), Thursday, 3 April 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan, I believe the clinical term is 'snot rocket'.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 3 April 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't been sick since last September, which worries me, because usually the fall/winter/spring months are just a parade of coughing and wheezing. My roommate has even had a terrible head cold, so have my office mates, and I still haven't caught it yet. Does that mean when I do get sick I AM GOING TO GET REALLY REALLY SICK?

Mandee, Thursday, 3 April 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

No it means you are UNBREAKABLE.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 3 April 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, in that case, sweet.

Mandee, Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a cold, but it wasn't so very bad. It's still lingering.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I have now convinced myself I have SARS. I hate paranoid hypochondria.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no! I hope my mom doesn't hear much about SARS. She has had upper respiratory problems most of her life and she's a total hypochondriac. Never mind that she's only been to Canada.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 3 April 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sick but I have a suspicious bite/sting on my arm (it might have been a wasp) that has spread into a wide red wheal and itches like crazy. It also feels much hotter than the rest of my skin, like that one part of me has a temperature. Is this normal?

isadora (isadora), Friday, 4 April 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Still the depression, and I am generally rather run down, so I seem to have some kind of cold nearly continuously.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 4 April 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Cover one nostril + blow thing = k-classic!

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 4 April 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

it's like a coughing convention in our offices this week, and I seem to have picked up some mad alergy making my eyes and nose stream like mad.

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Thursday, 30 October 2008 11:07 (sixteen years ago)

I've got a bit of a cough and quite a lot of 'flu-like generalised joint aches but not much 'flu, as such.

Doreen, Dorset (Marcello Carlin), Thursday, 30 October 2008 11:10 (sixteen years ago)

was it actually the norovirus? or just general gastroenteritis?

Fake Tuomas (ken c), Thursday, 30 October 2008 13:25 (sixteen years ago)

I never get them primarily b/c I had a strange possibly-flu-shot-caused disease when I was a kid. Regardless I don't think I'd get them as it seems people who do get sick as often as those who don't. I'm doubtful they are able to account for all the strains out there.

A socialist who's happy to spread the wealth (Susan), Thursday, 30 October 2008 13:26 (sixteen years ago)

lauren, Thursday, 30 October 2008 14:19 (sixteen years ago)

I never get the flu shot because I got really severe flu the last time I had it (aged 14). It was horrible. I was stuck in a ward with the windows open, a fan blasting on me and cold sponge baths every hour.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 30 October 2008 14:33 (sixteen years ago)

Has it worked since then?

A socialist who's happy to spread the wealth (Susan), Thursday, 30 October 2008 14:35 (sixteen years ago)

Well I hardly ever get the flu nowadays, so maybe it did. Except it doesn't work that way, does it? The flu shot I had in 1990 wouldn't do any good now, because our fancy modern flu is different.

After one last sinus infection I think I'm on the mend.

Can't believe Google's gone down when I desperately need to do a "Survivors" GIS.

My wife and son had colds over the past couple weeks. I thought I avoided it, but I started feeling bad on Friday. I managed to keep it in check over the weekend with liberal doses of Zicam. But I started to get very congested last night. I woke up early this morning unable to breathe through my nose. I tossed and turned trying to find a position that would allow me to breathe better. I finally fell asleep for a while but woke up with a horrible pain in my neck which hasn't gone away since. So now my neck is hurting like crazy and I still can't breathe.

Me. I am not ill. Not that any of you really wanted to hear that. Carry on. Matt and I will now dance away, arm in arm, like Dorothy and the Scarecrow.

Aimless, Monday, 15 December 2008 17:55 (sixteen years ago)

Everyone I know is or has been sick in the past month! I finished off some sort of cold/virus super combo a fortnight ago, and it seems to be edging back today. I did get a little tipsy over the weekend, though, so it's my own fucking fault. ColdFX, here we go.

Last Monday I travelled on a bus that seems to have the primary function of being a repository of disease. As well as the usual secondary bus function of being a repository of dis-ease. I knew this in advance of my journey, having been a regular on that route for years. I felt fine until Wednesday, when I began to become congested. Thursday and Friday I found it difficult to sleep, waking up at odd hours in the early morning, unable to drop off again. Not being a morning type of person, this did my nut in. Saturday and Sunday gradually I became more well and able to face the rigors of the public and the scornful ignorance of the media. Today I am at 90%

I've managed to avoid colds and severe illnesses all year, somehow (I've had sick headaches and upset stomachs a couple times but only one mild cold).

I am living in fear that my plane flight to Perth on friday will mean I will catch some hideous disease, as that's what happened last time I went over there (I was bedridden with severe tonsillitis for 4 days of my trip).

Aimless, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 19:15 (sixteen years ago)

well I was thinking about going to the doctor on saturday which was the worst of it, but I wasn't really sure what to do because I just got this new health plan and I couldn't tell whether or not I'd have to pay $250 for having to go to the ER because the clinics were closed. or something. but I'm better now so whew!

space phwoar (Hurting 2), Sunday, 24 March 2013 18:48 (twelve years ago)

My whole family got it at the same time. Wound up calling an ambulance because we got too dehydrated and delirious to take care of the baby. IV at the hospital, sent home Friday morning, basically been sleeping and eating saltines since then.

space phwoar (Hurting 2), Monday, 25 March 2013 03:24 (twelve years ago)

Started to get really really cranky from not eating anything but saltines, bananas, applesauce and plain pasta for the last few days -- went across the street and got myself a giant chocolate glazed donut and a cappucino. fuck you, digestive system.

space phwoar (Hurting 2), Monday, 25 March 2013 18:40 (twelve years ago)
