wondering if new poster x is an old poster: c or d?

like

it'd be weird not to consider it relevant in interactions with them, non?

and it totally changes the dynamic in how you'd view a new challopy kinda presence imo, some new dn hitting ilx points a lil too on the nose is yknow suspicious/delicious/curious and you'd often be doing em a favour to assume a panto act tbrr

idk when I see protestation overmuch against the phenomenon of the question even being asked I always think hmmm. but for some ppl its seemingly one of ilxs worst tendencies.

I think x is an old poster but I don't think it's c or d

local eire man (darraghmac), Monday, 26 January 2015 21:43 (ten years ago)

if x dares to eat a peach, I am satisfied with whatever else they may do or say on ilx

Aimless, Monday, 26 January 2015 21:45 (ten years ago)

Annoys me a bit when I don't know who people are and have been wondering where old ILXors have got to when in fact they're still there and have been all along. Only now I don't like them anymore.

A trumpet growing in a garden (Tom D.), Monday, 26 January 2015 21:45 (ten years ago)

its not a q of "changing ilx identities and pretending not to have done: c or d" because that is p much always d obv

local eire man (darraghmac), Monday, 26 January 2015 21:53 (ten years ago)

Yes, I don't know why people persist in doing it too.

don't see anything wrong with this, you return to the same community and get found out tough luck imo

I've considered it so my ILXmail doesn't go to an ancient Hotmail account. Don't think there's a way to change the associated email addy otherwise. But would make it clear it's still me.

ya ya

but lookit

I'm not asking is it easy or hard to spot em either

im asking why ppl think its a weird thing to ask, or wonder about

can't remember who said it on what thread before but someone basically put it thusly: if u turned up at a party or group event where everyone knew you in a wig, fake nose, what have you, its very strange behaviour to ignore and/or deny the disguise or yr identity"

I'd v much agree with this and if anybody would like to argue contra (because we've none such at the moment AFAIK and therefore it hopefully won't be construed as any type of specific query) I'd be very interested in their pov

local eire man (darraghmac), Monday, 26 January 2015 22:17 (ten years ago)

it depends on the person and circumstance, also a message board is a message board not a party or group event

there are different social modes on here, difft identity mixes / characters people are displaying, i mean generally i agree with you. also there's probably just some baseline anxiety about socializing in a medium like this, and a history of people using the internet to escape irl.

I appreciate the reasonable sound of "seems natural that others would wonder" and from the OP, "it'd be weird not to consider it relevant in interactions with them, non?"

In practice it's random accusations whenever an argument goes south.

Remember Treeship's earlier incarnation. But in general it is a lot of trouble to keep up, assuming you want to keep up, especially if you are not paying attention to ILX or the right threads on ILX when the transition occurs. Doesn't really matter of course, unless it is a poster you like and you wonder where they went or it is a poster you don't like and you want to maintain whatever filter, whether purely mental or browser doodad, that you use to deal with them.

you can only register if your IP shows at least one previous registration. you can register multiple times without having been banned but you cannot register at all if you were not already registered. given that this is the system, it's no surprise that people wonder "who's this?" when a new poster arrives; the system is closed, this is an inherent quality of the system. all new posters are a poster we already know or knew under a previous name.

This is why I changed mine so much in the beginning. I was just under the impression that everybody switched names a whole lot. But then there was a thing on the jaymc brah thread where it seemed like everyone was really annoyed at me about it.

o but tis true

the way the system works is it detects your ip range.

eg. if x registered in ip range 4000-5000, iLxoR allows anyone in that ip range to create a new user.

all it takes is a pre-existing user a within a given ip range y to allocate a user to any specific ip within it

as well: any existing user can log in from anywhere. anytime.

boredom usually plus for the first 5 years i posted under a new name every day to annoy my friend ferg who half the time thought other posters were me.

the latest name change was purely because i lost my old log in (think it was deleted after 6 months when i stopped posting last year.) I never deny it when people say are you cosmic slop or pfunkboy or ag etc if it is me. would be weird to not do that.

lj and branwell have had good explained reasons elsewhere.

I generally end up with some variation of pfunkboy in the name anyway.

I never knew anyone ever cared or was bothered about this.

the pinefox, Friday, 19 May 2017 10:16 (eight years ago)

any excuse really

Mirror in February

The day dawns, with scent of must and rain,
Of opened soil, dark trees, dry bedroom air.
Under the fading lamp, half dressed -- my brain
Idling on some compulsive fantasy --
I towel my shaven jaw and stop, and stare,
Riveted by a dark exhausted eye,
A dry downturning mouth.
It seems again that it is time to learn,
In this untiring, crumbling place of growth
To which, for the time being, I return.
Now plainly in the mirror of my soul
I read that I have looked my last on youth
And little more; for they are not made whole
That reach the age of Christ.

Below my window the wakening trees,
Hacked clean for better bearing, stand defaced
Suffering their brute necessities;
And how should the flesh not quail, that span for span
Is mutilated more? In slow distaste
I fold my towel with what grace I can,
Not young, and not renewable, but man.
