this looks interesting! coach taylor, da sleazeball character actor GAWD ben mendelsohn, sissy spacek (!), linda cardellini (!!), chloe sevigny at some point later in the show apparently - great cast for starters

as a complete noir addict i'm absurdly predisposed to like this, about to fire up the pilot. anyone else watching?

slothroprhymes, Friday, 20 March 2015 20:32 (ten years ago)

cast looks great, premise sounds awful. so sick of DARK and GRITTY dramas about SSSSEEEECRETSSSSS

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Friday, 20 March 2015 20:39 (ten years ago)

that said I'll watch the first couple

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Friday, 20 March 2015 20:41 (ten years ago)

that is a fair concern to have. i will say that thus far, voiceover aside, it seems like it's more pulpy and scuzzy than ponderous and (faux)profound. like it's played straight but i don't know just yet how seriously it's taking itself.

slothroprhymes, Friday, 20 March 2015 20:49 (ten years ago)

hopefully not very. and the voiceover, on 2nd thought, might actually be laying it on thick intentionally, as so many noirs have.

slothroprhymes, Friday, 20 March 2015 20:50 (ten years ago)

Just added it to my queue, but I've still got a couple other things I'm backed up on and need to get through.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 March 2015 20:53 (ten years ago)

i would not be interested in this at all based on the trailer/premise, but a contemporary novelist i really like (Arthur Phillips) is on the writing staff, and the cast does look interesting.

lil urbane (Jordan), Friday, 20 March 2015 21:14 (ten years ago)

liked the pilot enough to keep watching. the acting, especially mendelsohn and chandler, and the visual atmosphere are the best things about it. the premise isnt anything groundbreaking, to be sure, but noir is all about execution anyway.

slothroprhymes, Friday, 20 March 2015 21:46 (ten years ago)

dialogue - the crown jewel of all good crime fic & noir imo - is good for the most part if occasionally way on the nose. mostly in the narration. I can already sense the mockery that will befall the pilot's closing line, "we're not bad people BUT WE DID A BAD THING" once the more zing-centric critics and viewers get their hands on it. and I sort of understand a desire to roast that line & the antihero epidemic that leads to such lines. but if that's the worst thing I can say about something I otherwise like, it's an acceptable watching risk, imo.

slothroprhymes, Friday, 20 March 2015 21:53 (ten years ago)

well tbf that does make it sound like the fake prestige crime drama the characters on The Good Wife watch

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Friday, 20 March 2015 22:05 (ten years ago)

yeah I watched two and I think that's it for me

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Sunday, 22 March 2015 15:00 (ten years ago)

I've also watched 2, will give it a bit more time bc of mendelsohn, chandler and the all too brief chloe sevigny appearance. the "hothead" brother is fucking annoying as hell

slothroprhymes, Sunday, 22 March 2015 17:37 (ten years ago)

He is awful. The self-seriousness really kills this for me. And yeah, needs way more Sevigny.

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Sunday, 22 March 2015 18:02 (ten years ago)

five in & currently watching the sixth. it gets better as it goes along, but the real trick - if that wasn't readily apparent from the pilot - is viewing danny as the main character and not kyle chandler.

i am on the last one

Is this what you'd call 'southern gothic'?

paolo, Monday, 23 March 2015 09:36 (ten years ago)

nah, it'd have to be a lot weirder to fit that bill imo

so loud and so dumb and so macho-whiny (the worst kind of whiny)

slothroprhymes, Monday, 23 March 2015 12:19 (ten years ago)

im enjoying this, about 5 eps in. this isn't really all that *fun* for a noir or a "southern gothic" or whatever it is and doesn't really seem to revel in its location as much as it could--maybe that's a good thing but the plot is pretty thin so far as well. so it's stuck halfway between plot-driven and atmosphere-driven with neither really delivering so far. still, im interested!

kind of just want this to be about sam shephard and sissy spacek running a hotel in florida... maybe having some fun adventures.

tylerw, Monday, 23 March 2015 14:57 (ten years ago)

kinda unclear what the second season wld be about maybe they cld do a prequel

lag∞n, Monday, 23 March 2015 14:59 (ten years ago)

got to the ep where john apologizes to danny on the dock. was like "well that sure was nice, i bet this show is over" but then danny chopped that fish's head off after john left and the dramatic music plays and was like "oh is it".

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 23 March 2015 16:34 (ten years ago)

bloodlines part 7: in which danny tries an even crazier drug

lag∞n, Monday, 23 March 2015 16:51 (ten years ago)

i'm scared to watch. coach taylor deserves a show as good as nashville.

scott seward, Monday, 23 March 2015 16:56 (ten years ago)

not reading that spoiler. so very tempting, but I won't. *nurses old arm injury*

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 23 March 2015 16:58 (ten years ago)

nashville is still good? i liked season 1 but the start of season 2 left me cold even tho connie britton is good in anything, ever, at any time (it's a law)

(xp)

slothroprhymes, Monday, 23 March 2015 16:59 (ten years ago)

i finished the drug trip/bender episode last night, thought it and the one before it were the best eps thus far. there are pretty clear flaws even in the better episodes, but it's remained entertaining

#stillneedsmoresevigny

slothroprhymes, Monday, 23 March 2015 17:00 (ten years ago)

i kinda can't stand norbert leo butz for some reason. maybe it was all the singing and dancing with john lithgow on t.v. years ago...

scott seward, Monday, 23 March 2015 17:03 (ten years ago)

yes, still needs maurice vignier

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 23 March 2015 17:03 (ten years ago)

and watching the trailer thing makes me sad cuz freaks and geeks looks so sad! yeah, can they redo this show where freaks and geeks, coach taylor, sissy, and sam have a cool show.

scott seward, Monday, 23 March 2015 17:05 (ten years ago)

i don't think i know who the british bad boy brother is. was he in lock stock and smoking barrels?

scott seward, Monday, 23 March 2015 17:06 (ten years ago)

notable Ben Mendelsohn roles:
-bad person and criminal in The Place Beyond the Pines
-horrible person and criminal in Killing Them Softly
-absolutely despicable person and criminal in Animal Kingdom

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 23 March 2015 17:09 (ten years ago)

all brilliant roles imo, esp. animal kingdom. he is one of my absolute favorite character actors.

also jessa's dad on girls!

slothroprhymes, Monday, 23 March 2015 17:10 (ten years ago)

yeah, he's great

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 23 March 2015 17:11 (ten years ago)

scott, you should def see Animal Kingdom

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 23 March 2015 17:12 (ten years ago)

i'll check it out.

slothroprhymes, Monday, 23 March 2015 17:16 (ten years ago)

ya ben mendelsohn is good stuff

lag∞n, Monday, 23 March 2015 17:20 (ten years ago)

yeah he pretty much single-handedly makes this show addictive, and I like Coach and Lindsay Weir

Brio2, Monday, 23 March 2015 20:12 (ten years ago)

and Carrie and Chuck Yeager!

Brio2, Monday, 23 March 2015 20:20 (ten years ago)

really liking the back half of the season for its increased charles willeford/late 80s elmore leonard feel

slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 04:43 (ten years ago)

(lot more serious/straightfaced than those guys though, to its partial detriment)

slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 04:44 (ten years ago)

ya feel like they approached some leonard vibes and almost reached out and touched faith but ultimately dealing wit leonards plot mechanisms is too terrifying for every filmmaker, having the story turn on that tape of the childhood interrogation is nearly leonardian tho i will admit

lag∞n, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 04:46 (ten years ago)

a little more elmore would have gone a looooong way for this show

Brio2, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 13:45 (ten years ago)

notable Ben Mendelsohn roles:
-bad person and criminal in /The Place Beyond the Pines/
--Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton)

I recall him being semi-likable in this one but okay. He's amazing in Animal Kingdom.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 14:41 (ten years ago)

He is pretty good in the quite ridiculous but enjoyable Starred Up as well, also looking forwards to seeing Slow West with him + Fassbender .

xelab, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 21:13 (ten years ago)

just finished this. pretty enjoyable throughout despite its occasional hiccups and cliches. mendelsohn should get an emmy nom, for real

still not quite sure who the creators wanted the audience to sympathize with tbh, if only because I can't really see how, in the end, any character is more worthy of empathy than danny despite the bad shit he ends up doing. like I I bought all of his motivations, everyone else comes off entitled in some type of way or another

are... are you saying you fucked a gazelle? (slothroprhymes), Saturday, 28 March 2015 17:28 (ten years ago)

you know what is a cool better show than this with similar vibes: the affair, recommended

lag∞n, Saturday, 28 March 2015 17:32 (ten years ago)

entitled isn't exactly the right word for the other siblings, but idk I liked danny and chelsea and not really anyone else

other major deficiency is the women characters, well acted all around but p underwritten, even sevigny, which is odd bc these creators made damages and for all that show's numerous flaws the women on it were very well drawn imo

are... are you saying you fucked a gazelle? (slothroprhymes), Saturday, 28 March 2015 17:33 (ten years ago)

xp really? heard a lot of strong hatred for that show but then again am going solely off reviews and one friend who watched it

are... are you saying you fucked a gazelle? (slothroprhymes), Saturday, 28 March 2015 17:34 (ten years ago)

i loved it, p much the height of prestige trash with some legit subtly and humor in there and cool characterization

lag∞n, Saturday, 28 March 2015 17:36 (ten years ago)

hm, I'll try a few episodes of that at some point. I'm a huge fan of both mcnulty and ruth wilson (alice morgan on Luther = 💯), although the idea of mcnulty as ennui-stricken author is kinda strange

are... are you saying you fucked a gazelle? (slothroprhymes), Saturday, 28 March 2015 17:39 (ten years ago)

i dont want to spoil anything but mcnultys character is so perfect

lag∞n, Saturday, 28 March 2015 17:41 (ten years ago)

The Affair has some good stuff but was pretty underwhelming as a whole imo

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Saturday, 28 March 2015 21:27 (ten years ago)

I thought The Affair was terrible and have always found West a really terrible + appallingly wooden actor, he seems the opposite of Mendelsohn to me, who has the presence + talent to elevate cack like Bloodline to above average television. West has the opposite effect for me, he makes watching trash even more unbearable and drags it down even further with his anodyne shiteness.

xelab, Saturday, 28 March 2015 22:14 (ten years ago)

ur anodyne shiteness

lag∞n, Saturday, 28 March 2015 22:17 (ten years ago)

I don't get paid for my anodyne shiteness :p Would you consider West a fine actor? I wouldn't trust your judgement on fuck all else if you did.

xelab, Saturday, 28 March 2015 22:27 (ten years ago)

sure hes fine

lag∞n, Saturday, 28 March 2015 22:40 (ten years ago)

He is amongst some of the worst British ex-Eton actors ever, he represents mostly what I hate about the class system in my country. But at least you can enthuse about what you like about him rather than giving non-committed monosyllabic smart arse replies. At least I hate the talentless cunt and really feel the hatred.

xelab, Saturday, 28 March 2015 22:53 (ten years ago)

i appreciate and salute your passion for the topic of dominic west but at the same time i dont actually owe you any sort of explination, i will say tho that the same things that makes him perfect as mcnulty makes him even more perfect for this role i really enjoyed the performance

lag∞n, Saturday, 28 March 2015 23:13 (ten years ago)

Mcnulty is just a tedious stock macho Irish/American character and the writer he plays in The Affair is even sketchier and more badly written than that, only saying this because you fucking started it and now I am making pithy little comments on your fucking worthless opinions:p

xelab, Saturday, 28 March 2015 23:29 (ten years ago)

my opinons are very worthwhile, clearly

finally watching the finale tonight. Thought this developed very nicely. It's easy to forget what Danny's gasoline runs contributed to. A credit to the performance. When you remember, it's impossible to side with Danny. But you still want to side with Danny.

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 29 March 2015 04:22 (ten years ago)

Guess you can also credit the fact that you have no backstory for his innocent victims.

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 29 March 2015 04:23 (ten years ago)

he didnt know

lag∞n, Sunday, 29 March 2015 13:12 (ten years ago)

Until he did. And then his response was "ok, this guy is a big timer. I'd better move drugs for him."

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 29 March 2015 15:44 (ten years ago)

Guess that's unfair. But he was still trying to get the drugs moved after he knew.

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 29 March 2015 16:06 (ten years ago)

at that point he's gone too far down the road of his ultimate goal (making his family pay for what they did to him) to turn back from his dealings with lowery. but I definitely think it shakes him up, which is a testament to both how complex they made danny as a character - at the expense of other characters - and how well mendelsohn plays him

are... are you saying you fucked a gazelle? (slothroprhymes), Sunday, 29 March 2015 16:17 (ten years ago)

to be fair I could be projecting bc of how much I like the character, who could've easily been just another antihero to add to prestige TV's list of antiheroes but is ultimately too complicated to fit in that box. the other rayburns, especially the pig brother, are more typical antihero than danny

are... are you saying you fucked a gazelle? (slothroprhymes), Sunday, 29 March 2015 16:21 (ten years ago)

pretty good show. agree that danny definitely elevates it. not too enthused about a second season with danny 2.0.

ryan, Sunday, 29 March 2015 16:42 (ten years ago)

i think, more than anything else, i just enjoyed this for its slow pace and setting. the acting was usually decent, if the characterizations weren't always. this was ideal for netflix, as it was probably too slow to sustain week to week interest.

ryan, Sunday, 29 March 2015 16:43 (ten years ago)

lag∞n, Sunday, 29 March 2015 16:59 (ten years ago)

yeah but i fear it will involve a lot of teen angst with 2.0 as well. though i did think it was pretty funny how little anyone gave a shit about john's son.

i don't think danny is inherently a snake at all but def has it in him. he's an abused animal lashing out at the people who actually and directly abused him (his father) and because of either inborn issues or being too far gone is roping in people who indirectly hurt him & who he perceives as directly hurting him.

lag∞n, Wednesday, 8 April 2015 17:55 (ten years ago)

imho the key thing the show did was to make the origin/true nature of dannys terribleness ambiguous

lag∞n, Wednesday, 8 April 2015 17:57 (ten years ago)

an ex-junkie manipulative hard-done-by snakeshark acquaintance of mine was making grand statements on FB about how he'd never identified intensely with a fictional character until seeing Danny so I think Scott's onto something

Brio2, Wednesday, 8 April 2015 17:59 (ten years ago)

butz is just a broadway baby thus a big ham...

scott seward, Wednesday, 8 April 2015 18:03 (ten years ago)

Even though the Danny character is compelling and Mendelsohn so clearly owns whatever scene he's in, I kept wondering if he got the wrong notes or something...like he was playing on-the-nose snakeshark instead of the pro sociopath who successfully manipulates people precisely because he doesn't SEEM snakesharky. Like has no member of the Rayburn family ever been exposed to sarcasm before? He sits down at dinner and he's like, "Yeah, this should be A LOT OF FUN, I really LOVE you guys," and they're all "Oh, that's nice, welcome home."

I chugged this show down and feel like it got better +/- with each episode, but I think they really dropped the ball not making Danny harder to read.

Hadrian VIII, Wednesday, 8 April 2015 19:41 (ten years ago)

you could make an argument that all that reflects a kind of wishful thinking on the family's part--avoidance of fate, wrongs forgiven, and all that.

I was pretty shocked by the check scene. I think that scene was designed to be shocking, and it wouldn't work if you think Danny is full snakeshark by that point.

It's exhausting. Same pacing as the first season. Watch the first two episodes and the last two episodes and you'll be good.

God this show is glum. Not even "dark"—just completely bereft of humor. In real life, even (especially?) in grim times, people do and say funny things. A little comic relief would go a long away.

That said w/ the Danny stuff resolved I didn't expect to get into this season, but they've put together a tight plot and the acting is excellent across the board. Leguizamo is a pleasant surprise and I'm digging the Cape Fear vibe

Low point of every episode remains the titles with that godawful song, specifically when the words Norbert Leo Butz appear over time-lapse thunderstorm

one month passes...

I enjoyed the second season but then again I am a sucker for slow burning noirish crime dramas

paolo, Friday, 22 July 2016 08:36 (nine years ago)

I did think the bit at the end with Kevin killing Marco was a bit much though. Did he think that this would save John and Meg or did he just panic?

paolo, Friday, 22 July 2016 08:38 (nine years ago)

he just panicked

sarahell, Friday, 22 July 2016 15:47 (nine years ago)

I thought that was the case but it seemed very out of character as Kevin hasn't been violent before if I remember right. Great show overall though, very atmospheric

three months pass...

Can someone clarify something for me, having just finished season 1? the first few episodes lean pretty heavily on a flash-forward scene of John dragging Danny through the swamp in striped seersucker suits. At about episode 8-9 you see that the suits are for Meg's wedding but Danny dies and Meg doesn't actually get married. Did I miss something major (like a whole episode!!) ?

cancelled, from what I read....did season 2 end on a cliffhanger?

akm, Sunday, 6 November 2016 18:46 (nine years ago)

It's been cancelled after season 3.

six months pass...

We chained eight episodes of season three yesterday - the bent coroner is straight into the pantheon of great minor characters.

I hope the cancellation doesn't mean they haven't brought the whole thing to a satisfying conclusion.

four months pass...

First half of the last series was quite good but those final episodes were a complete crock

paolo, Monday, 16 October 2017 08:47 (eight years ago)

I enjoyed the bleakness of the conclusion well enough but the second series had clearly set a number of plates in motion that they weren't able to resolve in time. I got the distinct impression that a number of plotlines had been very hastily rewritten once the series was cancelled - characters just suddenly keeling over and dying or shooting themselves in the head etc.
