Hating the poor, nimby fucks, racism, progress haters, tax refusers, let's all hold hands while we die together. Examples welcome.

The two Facebook groups for my city are basically old people reminiscing about where they hung out as teenagers.

There's a doozy in Northeast Minneapolis where a gun-happy libertarian pitbull-loving douchette is always on patrol, lest a Somali person or LIBRUL be seen somewhere in her vicinity, actually enjoying their lives.

scientist/exotic dancer (suzy), Saturday, 23 May 2015 08:41 (ten years ago)

I still go to a Google group for my dad's neighborhood, one of those places where there's only one entrance/exit. Every month, someone will wonder how much it would cost to put a camera or a security gate at the (public) entrance, and every month, someone replie that the criminals would probably just steal that too.

pplains, Saturday, 23 May 2015 13:48 (ten years ago)

The racism on some of these is the most discouraging I've found on the 'net. Discouraging because what former residents say in those groups is rude, hurtful, unfair, and INACCURATE.

No neighborhood near where I have lived has EVER been "respectable". Around my old hood are many areas that were essentially mob turf. NO ONE back in the day would boast about their community.

Doesn't stop them from interrupting current black residents to call their middle-class neighborhoods a "ghetto".

We really need a stronger movement against racism on the Internet.

Freeland Avenue (I M Losted), Saturday, 23 May 2015 20:40 (ten years ago)

i'm not in a facebook one but my neighborhood is one of my city's more racist and it's so painful. like "i just wanted you all to know that last night at around 10 there were 2 young black males walking around yelling," in addition to the mundane "i saw a raccoon" and "we never used this food item does anyone want it"

The comments sections in 4nne 4rundel 1st Alert and 4nne 4rundel County Breaking News and Events got hella racist during the Freddie Gray protests, but I was happy to see a lot of anti-racist pushback after the first day or so.

I just joined "You know you're from 3dgewater when..." group for the purposes of this thread. Wish me luck.

I'm such a dick. They let me in the group and it's totally harmless and even positive. All like "what was the name of the hardware store before they turned it into a Royal Farms?" type stuff.

Even class pictures from the elementary school demonstrating that it was a pretty diverse community decades ago.

I'll stand by the other pages I mentioned as being pretty bad though.

I understand that for a lot of people, Facebook is for nostalgia and reuniting with your old schoolmates, but why, twenty or thirty years on, has it not occurred to the conspicuous consumption crowd that some of us are still loyal to our old communities and don't need to hear your "there goes the neighborhood" scare stories. Especially when those tactics were old forty years ago.

Then there are people who grew up in a very progressive and pro-labor community and who somehow think the current residents want to hear their smug libertarian politics.

How can someone live in proximity to the black community throughout their childhood and not absorb ANY knowledge of or appreciation for that community and its values - not to mention being utterly ignorant about the implications of integration. For example, it's not black people's fault that the mall closed down - as if money rains from the sky wherever YOU go.

Was sick of and alienated from these people the first time around. Also appalled that their ignorant children live in expensive new-construction homes because living in a 1960's split level is for "ghetto" people.

Freeland Avenue (I M Losted), Sunday, 24 May 2015 16:25 (ten years ago)

I wanted to alert local residents: on Tues afternoon around 5 pm I saw a man in the courtyard area between 2 buildings in this area, who appeared to be looking in ground floor windows, kind of lingering and staring at various apartments. He was carrying what looked like a collapsible cane (maybe for breaking windows?). By the time I got outside to investigate, he was gone. I recognize most of the people who live in the buildings in my area and I definitely did not recognize him. Just a heads up to be alert for prowlers, lock windows when you're out, maybe leave a radio or TV on, etc.

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Wednesday, 3 June 2015 21:19 (ten years ago)

my facebook neighborhood group is

1) punks yelling about yuppies gentrifying the neighborhood
2) yuppies getting mad that punks keep breaking windows and pepper spraying business owners (yes, this really happened last week)
3) me writing and erasing x50 times a message saying PUNKS YOU ARE THE REASON IT IS GENTRIFYING IN THE FIRST PLACE but never posting it
4) the really cool city councillor for our hood answering ppl's questions and generally being awesome

I just got in an argument with a cop on my neighborhood group who was saying that it was good "broken windows" policing to target bikes as much as possible. They're ridden by the criminal element.

Also, a number of people are upset about a corner where there are just too many newspaper boxes, and a taxi stand that had a lot of taxis lined up at it.

Hello All,
Frequently I see garbage like mattresses, box springs, on the corners of Jayne and Perkins, Warwick and Perkins, and at the end of Lee at Vernon. I'm always puzzled given that the garbage is located in front of multi unit buildings, with I imagine hundreds of people passing it daily...and yet the garbage remains. Do folks not know it's quite simple to report it to public works? Are people oblivious to it because they've passed it so many times? Maybe they're thinking since they didn't put it there, they're not responsible for calling it in. Please folks, if you live close to where the garbage is, call it in to public works and they'll pick it up. We all pay tax dollars to receive this service

I live at the end of Warwick near Euclid and there's an apartment building across from me that's on the corner. The balconies face our building.
About once every week there's a woman who throws parties and is extremely loud. She's sits on her balcony, drinks and smokes cigarettes to all hours.
Not sure if she knows how loud she is but it echoes.
Anyone else hear her? And if you know her please quiet her down or find her a boyfriend.

Here's Nextdoor in a nutshell:

'did anybody hear that noise'
'somebody was casing my house'
'kids are selling newspaper subscriptions'
'I was burgled yesterday when I left all my ground floor windows open'
'_____ new restaurant is great'
'you're an agent of gentrification'
'you're the real racist'
'I've lived here for ____ years and ACTUALLY you're the racist'
'all of you are racist'
'free chunks of concrete in my driveway, you haul'

Nextdoor ultimately booted me for not giving my real name, which turned out to make my life much more peaceful.

^One friend's lost dog search went nationally viral in the UK a couple of months ago because of FB and Twitter, and the dog finally turned up on its ninth day out. Granted, the friend in question is a fairly well-regarded journalist/presenter but she was bowled over by the kindness of strangers and the amount of reach they helped her to achieve.

My hometown group is generally pretty OK, probably because it has links to the local historical society. Lots of former C-average-and-below doofs posting about secret wilderness party locales of days gone by etc, surprisingly little racism (but what little there is comes from posters who are provably, quantifiably stupid for reasons like the one just noted). One notable thread did attempt to out the paedophilia of a recently dead local businessman who'd moved from the area 20 years previously, but it got taken down by a rather dim version of the group's Nice Police on the grounds that his kids might see it.

haha, attn: sunny - http://www.nytimes.com/1983/03/20/us/dog-town-buries-nickname-but-feud-lives-on-the-talk-of-north-little-rock.html

Dog days have returned, indeed, to North Little Rock. The city's Civil Service Commission has suspended the Chief of Police, his deputy and the head of the Fraternal Order of Police, with full pay, while it investigates reports about them.

The commission began public hearings last week to explore charges of ''conduct unbecoming a police officer'' against Police Chief William Younts, whose nickname is ''Bubba.'' Chief Younts is a stocky man with a naturally red face that turns redder when he denies the charges.

He adamantly rejects accusations by a waitress, for example, that he was ''rowdy, obnoxious, very intoxicated,'' or, as a banker testified, ''having trouble maintaining vertical stability'' at a Sambo's restaurant on the morning of Dec. 12.

Unfortunately with maps and waze, people are being rerouted all over the place avoiding traffic; it has become a disaster with traffic. So the riffraff have learned about our convenient little bypass and speed through like maniacs. I can't tell you how many people don't even slow down at half the stop signs on the whole stretch of our street. It's definitely no longer just us. I am thinking about the neighborhood, the children, the dogs and trying to hold on to a tiny bit of whatever convenience is left for us, with the taxes we pay to live in the area.
The street really needs to stay closed.

here's a classic i meant to post

I can't wait till it [public school being renovated] closes, very few students that walk down Berry Street towards the light rail show any respect to the people that live in *******.The school should allow children in the area [almost entirely white area] to attend the newly renovated school,Children that appreciate the school, the people that live there and the neighborhood This will keep the trouble making students out of *******.

I know that this is just an "innocent" picture that someone shared, but as a lifeguard, can you see the potential dangers here?
If you saw a child alone, looking down at the water and knowing children are curious, this child is in a dangerous situation. Then again, I guess you're not a lifeguard so you don't see the potential danger here. Even if it is just a painting, it's set up in a very dangerous situation. Sorry if you don't get it. If this was a real situation and that child fell into the water, he could drown in less than 2" of water if he fell in and couldn't stand up. Look at the height of the deck. It's about 3" . It's an accident that can and should be avoided.

Yeah, it's clearly not a pool, it's just some sprinklers on a soft surface. I've been there. But the woman was undeterred when people explained that to her. "Children can drown in 2" of water" etc.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Tuesday, 21 June 2016 02:05 (nine years ago)

I hope I'm not wrong, but I'm pretty sure the scenarios where children drown in 2" of water are where the kid is unattended and therefore winds up unconscious face down in water for more than a few seconds.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Tuesday, 21 June 2016 02:06 (nine years ago)

author is thinking of kid as unattended i think but has forgotten the pov presence -- obv if the kid fell the painter would rescue him.

The hot topic right now is continuing to mourn the already now-closed Barnes & Noble and complain about the Target soon to replace it (sort of a mini-Target or Target Express or something).

Shoshanna ____ this community desperately wanted B&N to stay. Petitions were filed. Pleas made. Our B&N was a place to browse, hear stories, linger. To gather as a community.

i realize this is prob the 3rd or 4th most bizarre part of the post but:

"Look at the height of the deck. It's about 3"

so the kid is what, 10 inches tall? is 3 inches too tall for a deck? what does this have to do with drowning?

dynamicinterface, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 13:06 (nine years ago)

I guess if it's between Barnes & Noble and Target I'd take Barnes & Noble, but honestly in the age of Amazon there is no reason to go into a Barnes & Noble -- shitty selection and illiterate staff. People in my neighborhood mostly went so their toddlers could play with and fuck up the toy stock, or for free storytimes. That was my impression anyway, never a lot of people in the cash register line.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 16:50 (nine years ago)

The actual problem in my neighborhood is that commercial rents on the main strip are almost inexplicably high, which favors chains.

Right now there's a group with a kickstarter project to open an indie bookstore in the neighborhood, and while I find starting a private business to be a slightly weird use of kickstarter, they've managed to raise almost $60K, and good on them I guess.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 16:54 (nine years ago)

I was halfway joking about the random stuff at B&N, but I actually was impressed by their selection of Funko Pop figures, some architectural lego-style kits, and some other random stuff they have these days. They also have a lot of vinyl records. 2016 is a hell of a time for large chain bookstores.

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 17:14 (nine years ago)

As easy as it is to laugh at them, I do sort of sympathize with people who make the categorical error of thinking the capitalist sphere is democratic, and thus "petition" for a store to stay open when it no longer can or wants to pay the asking rent.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Tuesday, 5 July 2016 15:21 (nine years ago)

Our biggest Target controversy was when they _closed_ a Target in a kind of food-poor area and moved it a couple miles west. Was really glad to see some of the staff relocated, though. Honestly, there was less of a controversy than there should have been because the people most affected have less of a voice.

don't have a neighborhood group but my train line has a group and it's been inflamed this week by smokers on the line ; obv smoking on the train is illegal but there's rarely security on the train so smokers occupy a whole section of the train and it gets thick. the group has been discussing techniques for stopping the smokers (like pulling alarms to get the train stopped for security to be called) and others are angry that it'll delay our rides and it goes on on on

I'll try to post stuff about it later but we have a huge local controversy right now over some nutjob and his Trump sign. Someone stole it multiple times, so the guy posted flyers all over the neighborhood offering a $5K reward plus 10% interest in his "lawsuit" proceeds for info about the thief. However he posted them on a bunch of old-growth trees (which is illegal) and did like $40,000 in damage.

The same guy also apparently ran for local office a few years ago and backed over a child with his campaign bus, killing the child.

I got another friend request from her about a month ago under the "Angela Beauchamp" moniker again, and she is not currently friends with the "Angela N Kevin" account, which has apparently defriended me but is still active.

bike paths (of the "cycle track"/protected bike lane variety) have been a hot topic on mine lately too. last year they put one in a very rich neighborhood. everyone was so mad. they can't double park anymore, there are less parking spots, bicyclists should use the sidewalk, whatever. now they're putting in another one in a really good place for bike commuting to downtown and it's starting again. like this is going to add time to my already short commute which i should not even be using a car for. waaaaaa.

Someone started a petition now over this taxi stand on the main drag in my neighborhood. For some reason people have decided that the line of cabs is too long and they want it to be shorter, but no one can seem to give a coherent reason why. It's "congestion" but it's a busy six-lane commerical road and the cab stand is only on the service road. People say really dumb shit like "clearly we don't need that many cabs" when obviously if we didn't need that many cabs, that many cabs wouldn't be congregating there waiting for pickups.

Walking West on Lyr1c between St Ge0rge and M0non Tuesday night. I pass 3 black guys 2 short, 1 big 6'3" 220 + wearing white shirts and black baseball hats and smoking something, saw the fire, just hanging out near the corner. I passed them and turned North on M0non and came across this lovely graffiti. Coincidence maybe or maybe not.

Hello Neighbors,
Just a note to be aware of...someone has been steadily at work DISMANTLEING the fence which restricts access to the empty lot at the foot of Orange Street... you know, the one with the growing collection of Graffiti in ever more resplendent colors.

Day by day, piece by piece they have removed the supports, upper cross piece, brackets etc so that today I noticed that one end of the fence is DOWN, with fresh graffiti and a 'signature' logo (man's head) on the ground inscribed via poured paint. You can see this guys work all over West Oakland and now he's working on us.

I'm sure he means to continue the damage further, so please keep an eye out and call police (?!) if needed. The owners of the empty lot seem to care not and "code enforcement" has stepped back from graffiti on private property. I once begged code enforcement to inspect the lot and clear it as a FIRE HAZZARD one Fall when there was lots of dry grass waiting to catch fire but it NEVER happened. And now we know what happens when fire hazards go unattended to.

there's a group for bethnal green, in east london, which i was in but eventually turned off notifications for. it became colonised by exiled londoners in their 50s or 60s - their conversations were a mixture of nostalgia and racism. like someone would tell quite a nice story about getting dolled up on a friday night to go to some now defunct pub, and seeing all their friends there, and how everyone looked so nice and the whole street would be out, and it actually did sound really nice, then the next comment would be "wouldn't happen today! too many of the other lot around!" or something and the person who'd told the nice wistful story would agree. generally made me wish you could remove the wistfulness from the racism.

I have never used an Internet neighborhood forum but I just read through this thread and the Sherwin Williams thing is KILLING me. The particular form of ubiquitous Internet racism seen in this thread is however super familiar to me from any number of times trying to Google neighborhoods and specific buildings while doing spare-time architectural semi-research - in particular the same type of good-old-days obsessive crank who jumps on any topic to report BLACK PEOPLE seen in the vicinity seems to spend a lot of time searching discussion boards where people are visitng or thinking of moving to a city and asking if neighborhood X is a safe area. The quantity of barely-concealed and almost-never-challenged racism that comes pouring out in response is stomach-turning.

This artist, designer, dancer, and transformation coach (me!) is going through a housing transformation. A sudden 25% rent increase for the rent here in Sunset Pointe (Marina Bay) means it's time for me to (wo)manifest my next lovely home. Here I am at a crossroads. I see three paths....

• Path 1 will lead to a rental of my own. I'd like to stay in the Marina Bay area, or Albany, Berkeley, El Cerrito, Oakland, but have you seen the rental prices lately? I am open to widening my search radius as wide as necessary. (Iowa?)
• Path 2: You've got a great house and you are looking for an awesome sage wisewoman to move in with you and make a home together. Roommates, an inlaw...?
• Path 3: You too need a new place and want to team up to find one and get more for our money.

Some more about me:
• I make the world's best kombucha (as I'm often told), I'm a paleo-locavore-seasonal chef, I kinda-sorta garden (greens, snap peas, and succulents), and I'm very tidy. Even though it adds some stress, I haven't followed up on listings that have electric stoves (yet!), I like gas for cooking.
• I like to work at home. My business is online -- coaching, branding, design, marketing. Clients never visit me at my home office (except over Zoom and Skype calls, that is). I need some space for my computer/printer/workstation setup. I'm flexible about working out of the home a bit, and going off with my laptop now and then, but ergonomics and finances make it really important for me to have a home office space.
• I have a cat allergy. I know that's a big one.
• I have never missed a rent or mortgage payment (or even been late!).
• I'm kind, generous, funny, smart, and have a robust current spiritual inner journey.

There was something else, but I can't remember.

Please, if you have any information that may help me, please get in touch. Blessed be.

SAFETY ALERT!!!
CXXXXXXX EXX from Argenta · 1d ago
I drove up into my driveway and out of the corner of my eye I see this white truck drive up behind me and a black couple around 25ish got out. It made me nervous how quickly they drove up like they were waiting for me to get home. The man was dressed in a suit and said he was working for a company that cleaned houses and wanted to see if I needed that type of assistance. I never got out of my car, I spoke to them through by rolling down my widow just so. He then said that he was giving away gift cards for those who signed up. As he said this he was unrolling/unfolding the gift card. That's when I really became suspicious. Why was the card folded up and he offered it to me to take, BUT I DID NOT TOUCH OR ROLL MY WINDOW DOWN FURTHER!!! When he saw I was not going to respond to his gesture or invite, they QUICKLY left. The lady never said a word, but was behind him as support. I mentioned this to a friend out of state who said it was a good ideal that I did not touch the card. There is something called Scopolamine that could have been blown into my face or just touching the card could have been a bad thing. He said people have emptied out their bank account and never knew they did it when they came in contact with this stuff. Neighbor, well it's here. Don't accept flyers or anything from people who offers unless you know they're la-get!!! I am so nervous how close I could have became a victim.

Thanks R---. Can I please have some details like what do we do in race night.. is it music and dancing and what age groups ? etc

R--- · 1 Jun
Hi S---, a race night is there will be a film of horse racing on which you can have a little flutter on , winner's will be given there winnings and any monies left over will go to charity. It is for any age groups but not for children. When it is over there will be music put on if you want to stay. Hope this helps you.

Thanks R--- for clarifying. It is not what I thought and will not attend this time. Wishing yo an enjoyable evening.

The Adventures Of Whiteman (Bananaman Begins), Friday, 30 June 2017 12:59 (eight years ago)

Yeah, my amusement is partly the idea of someone expecting to find people advertising White Power nights on a neighbourhood group in South Tottenham, and partly because I'd never heard of Race Nights before - the idea of betting on a film of a race seems largely unsuited to the modern era in a lot of ways (I am probably being Sneering Metropolitan Elite here)

three weeks pass...

So our neighbors just loooove to use the word 'thug' for ant black guy just walking down the street. I got into a lengthy argument with this guy. Oh and hey what - I'm a snowflake and a tattle tale because I said I was going to ask the mod to remove all posts with racial slurs in them. Now god forgive if you were to say shit or fuck or cunt. Anyway here's the convo I had with the admin:

Hi David,

Could we please as THUG as an offensive word? Reference below:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/m.mic.com/articles/amp/99182/7-racially-coded-phrases-that-everyone-needs-to-stop-saying-about-black-people

Kate,

I'd like to help. I have a graduate English degree, so I understand the issue well, but not sure what you'd like me to do.

David

Hi David, maybe delete posts that use offensive language? Thanks Kate

Kate,

I understand why you find the word offensive, but the recent discussion makes clear that others don't agree with you.

I'm not the arbiter of language on the site. Blatant violations are easy, but not seeing that here.

I understand your position, and I'm sorry you're offended, but treading on free speech is not something I do easily.

David I'm from Australia via Scotland and I manage to restrain myself from using the F word and the C word and those aren't even racist. Calling a black man a thug is racist.

Kate,

I don't disagree. But I have no right to tell other people what words they can use.

Awesome. Do I can use cunt and fucking cracker as much as I like. Thanks for the clarification.

flippy bard (Will M.), Tuesday, 1 August 2017 00:11 (eight years ago)

Free speech is for the government to control. Anyone who runs a group or a company or a whatever is free to do whatever the shit they want to shut peoples speech down. I dont get why people dont understand this.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 1 August 2017 00:14 (eight years ago)

if it doesn’t personally bother someone they just shrug and say, “free speech!” if it does bother them, then they get all up in arms

if you say something and someone else dislikes they are a snowflake and if you dislike what they say, they are vile

mh, Tuesday, 1 August 2017 01:56 (eight years ago)

I should add that the only reason I'm leaning on the offensive word theme is because, a week or so before, this other guy calls the board out on all the racism - veiled and not so much. A bunch of posters shouted him down on the pretense of offensive language because he used ' god' in a colloquial sense in his thread title.

Then along came good ol David to tell him the site does not tolerate offensive language. He followed that up by deleting a bunch of posts but not the thread so the title remained. So stupid.

Someone posted their kids' three old Halloween costumes for sale on our neighborhood parent forum. One was an obviously offensive Native American costume. Some people called her out for it, and when she refused to get rid of the costume, a heroic friend of mine who I will just call Lea offered to pay her $10 for it so she could dispose of it herself. The woman actually took her up on it, and said she would leave it with her doorman.

Here is a picture of the $10 bill Lea left her, which the woman angrily posted to the group the next day:

Exchange from recent thread about the fact that they're going to house a few dozen homeless people in a failed hotel in my neighborhood:

Jonathan K___ I think people are talking past each other here. We should not conflate "homeless people" and "bums". As I indicated with my earlier posted NYer article, many homeless people have jobs. Some are even university professors. No one wants bums. Dirty, disheveled, etc. often mentally ill. No one wants them near where they live. I sure as shit don't. But if someone is merely homeless and goes to school or work or what have you and they need a place to live, then I see no problem. I'm anti-bum. Not anti-homeless.

Lisa A_____ Okay, now that I can agree with.

Lisa A_____ but a lot of the righteous on here seem not to mind the legit bums. Like I said, standards.

Why this dude imagined a scenario in which he would have to shoot someone in a grocery store was beyond me. Loud profane music on C____ St

There’s a teen party going on C____ St. with several kids walking around the house. I called the Sheriffs office and complained after listening to “F__ dis N__ r” rap music coming through my closed windows. After 3 hrs I called back they told me the officer couldn’t find the house. I drove over myself and found several cars parked on the north side of the street about 400 ft from L____ Rd. I asked dispatch for the name of the responding officer and he put me on hold and then disconnected the call. Why the hell do I have to be subjected to this type of total disregard for others every weekend? If it isn’t loud music, it’s fireworks, or loud motorcycles or loud diesel trucks, or the damn ice cream truck! Thanks police departments great job

To the Man with 8 Eight Vehicles on Oakland and Harrison Aves
One of our neighbors has eight different vehicles parked on Oakland and Harrison Ave. They include vans, older cars and motorcycles.

I've had my catalytic converter stolen ($1400), back window smashed and have had the contents of the car gone through 4 or 5 times. In each instance it was parked closer to the 580 than I would have liked to do because this guy with 8 vehicles takes up all the spaces in front of my house.

I know who it is and where he lives. He is also a registered sex offender and pedophile. As far as I know he has paid his debt to society for his crimes, but he's screwing the rest of us over with his vehicles.

If you, the subject of this post, are here, please stop hoarding the extremely limited parking spaces in our neighborhood. Rent a garage. If the individual isn't here and/or not open to finding a compromise, I will be taking action to correct the situation whatever that means.

I just want to park my truck without it being destroyed!

sarahell, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 19:06 (eight years ago)

parking is a hot topic on nextdoor right now

someone has created a poll, "Should the city require residential parking permits?" which I unwittingly voted in, causing me to get subscribed to the thread. I don't want to go back to unsubscribe because I know the comments would just make me insane, so I'm just quickly swiping email messages away before I read them

I am sure I'm going to feel like looking at it soon to laugh in glee at the chaos, though

mh, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 19:18 (eight years ago)

fwiw there's no way my city is large enough or congested enough to need such permits, it's just a person on a short stretch of road angry that people have the nerve to park (badly) on the street

mh, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 19:19 (eight years ago)

and by organically, I mean some of them were so bad that friends would tell me things like "you have to join 'Townname People', it's got the most fucked up stuff"

so you end up with a conspicuous 10% of the group not actually from there, just there for the ride

mh, Friday, 12 January 2018 17:13 (seven years ago)

on investigation, it appears there is now a second "Townname People - No Moderators" group set up in protest

I've got to find out what's going on here, I bet it's dramatic

mh, Friday, 12 January 2018 17:14 (seven years ago)

I checked out the "no moderators" group and the first post was someone asking whether there was still going to be a pan-Asian grocery store set up in a campustown location that was formerly a pet store. First response was a poorly-formed "joke" combining the name of an american chinese restaurant dish with "meow."

so I'm guessing the no-moderators policy is to avoid the thought police who banned racists

best post on nextdoor today is a response to a thread where a woman was looking for a vet to express her dog's anal glands. she did not express interest in doing it herself, and since she was asking for a vet to do it, one would assume she did not want to do it herself. a helpful reply gave lengthy step-by-step instructions for how to express the dog's anal glands.

We had our first dead dog photo.

SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU LEAVE YOUR DOGS OUTSIDE IN THIS COLD WEATHER????? Dog laid flat on its side, half buried in two inches of snow, legs sticking straight as if he had been standing and then tipped over. THE OWNERS OF THIS DOG SHOULD SPEND A NIGHT OUT IN THE COLD LIKE THIS ONE.

Somebody from our animal control department posted that the dog was found with bite marks all over it, which you couldn't see in the photo. Also, if the dog had froze to death, it would've likely been found curled up, not laying on the ground like it's trying to get some sun on the left side too. Oh, and the owners have been notified since he was wearing a collar, they're mortified and saddened. (Also, I guess HIPPA doesn't cover animals.)

The response? ANIMAL CONTROL SHOULD HAVE RESCUED THE ANIMAL BEFORE IT WAS ATTACKED BY OTHER ANIMALS AND oh for chrissake why am i on this list.

i'm on it so i can read about how THE BIKE LANE NEEDS TO BE REMOVED because hits-and-runs have definitely increased since people in the city's richest neighborhood now have to park their cars in a place eight feet to the side from where they used to be and they are mad

assawoman bay (harbl), Saturday, 20 January 2018 23:20 (seven years ago)

Lol we also have a brand new bike lane and the neighborhood is NOT HAVING IT. I mean look at this photo I snapped on a 15 degree day, see any bikers?

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Sunday, 21 January 2018 00:16 (seven years ago)

There's a half mile stretch of road that went from four lanes to two lanes (+ a turn lane) and I tell ya that change has just *ruined* the lives of everyone within a half mile radius. And they used to have such a nice neighborhood.

omar little, Sunday, 21 January 2018 00:25 (seven years ago)

Another one is people complaining about the fact that they are demolishing the structure of a “historic” (ugly, dilapidated and outdated) Jewish community center TO BUILD A BETTER FACILITY.

It “goes back to the holocaust,” which I’m pretty sure did not take place in Queens.

My other favorite thing is whenever someone announces that a new eatery is going in some vacant 350sf storefront someone inevitably says “what we really need is a supermarket.”

We had a Savers thrift store close, in a location that had also hosted a Food 4 Less and a Budget Saver.

So obviously, Trader Joe's was the pick among the neighbors to replace it. Nevermind that currently the closest one to us is in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Why not a location that couldn't even support three discount stores?

- same person saying there was nowhere to park (no parking spots were removed) and that two businesses in the area had closed recently so obviously the road plan is bad for business. this is an area of like, fifteen square blocks with a bunch of businesses, many of them new
- someone saying that they had to slow down and move around someone exiting their car on the traffic side. which seems like a normal thing you do on city streets with parking if you're not a jerk?

strong argument there for holding nationally distributed papers to a much higher standard

mh, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 18:24 (six years ago)

xp kudos on the porch work, pplains

mh, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 18:24 (six years ago)

what is a road diet?

sarahell, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 18:28 (six years ago)

A road diet, also called a lane reduction or road rechannelization, is a technique in transportation planning whereby the number of travel lanes and/or effective width of the road is reduced in order to achieve systemic improvements.

for instance, this worked really well in a neighborhood next to mine where a really wide road that has lots of stores on it got switched from four lanes of travel to two and made formal (as opposed to unmarked) parking and bike lanes on both side

mh, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 18:32 (six years ago)

xp to cite a street you might know, like if Solano Ave up in Berkeley used to have two lanes of traffic going each way and then changed it to how it appears now, adding in angled parking and turn lanes and cutting down the speed limit.

omar little, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 18:33 (six years ago)

it drives people who hate paying attention while driving nuts because it turns areas with high pedestrian and bike traffic with traffic that ignores them into areas where drivers are forced to give those people space

mh, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 18:36 (six years ago)

xp - ohhh they did this with Telegraph Ave in Oakland right near me about a year ago -- between the diet, the buses, and the weird parklets -- it really discourages driving down that stretch of street

sarahell, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 18:48 (six years ago)

lol at Solano ave tho -- that's yuppie hell and way out of the way for me -- might as well drive to SF

sarahell, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 18:50 (six years ago)

I'm pretty sure that ppl on my nextdoor have complained about this telegraph ave road diet tho, however, it is eclipsed by the bigger issue of package theft. I swear, if someone were to run for city council in our district on a platform that prioritizes combating package theft with some innovative technological solution, they would win by a landslide.

sarahell, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 18:56 (six years ago)

package and bike thieves are the local scourge. every time someone loses a bike, someone replies that they should check the homeless encampments. Or when they see someone they ID as "a transient" with a bike, sometimes they take a photo of them and say "anyone missing a bike that looks like this?"

omar little, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 18:59 (six years ago)

still tho, it really demonstrates the repercussions of amazon's dominance -- delivery companies are super lax now in terms of requiring signatures before delivery -- fedex saw no problem whatsoever in leaving packages on the doorstep to my apartment building, which is akin to putting them on the curb with a big sign that says "FREE!" ... maybe the prospective city council candidate could also file a class action lawsuit against FedEx on behalf of everyone in Oakland, pretty much

sarahell, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 19:03 (six years ago)

i mean, if the economic conditions of my life were such that stealing packages was a solid career move, I would totally target this neighborhood.

sarahell, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 19:07 (six years ago)

Amazon also just makes so much money that they'll take the losses on stolen packages and just send you a replacement with no question asked, so people feel secure in that regard as well. Which also cuts out local stores to an extent, people don't worry about not being home because it doesn't matter, they know a replacement would get sent regardless.

omar little, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 19:09 (six years ago)

oh, I'm talking about FedEx -- delivering for companies that aren't just Amazon -- in that they are delivering so many Amazon packages, they need to be more efficient. Amazon would not refund me the cost of the makita drill batteries that got stolen, which I ordered from Amazon because Home Depot (and the other hardware stores) don't carry batteries for my 25 year old drill ...

sarahell, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 19:11 (six years ago)

imo Amazon capitalized on both sides of the equation by buying the Ring doorbell company

want some packages? we'll send you some. someone stealing your packages? buy our fancy motion sensor doorbell and find out who

mh, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 19:18 (six years ago)

brilliant!

sarahell, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 19:23 (six years ago)

maybe then they will buy nextdoor.com so they can monetize people complaining about their packages being stolen and posting blurry pics taken from the Ring cameras

sarahell, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 19:24 (six years ago)

I'm kind of thinking they will -- the Ring app already has a nextdoor-like feature and 90% of it is "this guy came up to my porch and looked in the window but didn't ring the bell"

mh, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 19:25 (six years ago)

oh yeah and the classic "loud noise - car backfiring or gun being fired?"

tbh I don't remember the last time I heard a car backfire but it's an interesting dichotomy set up

Today, February 27th, at approximately 10:55am, OPD police activity briefly impacted the neighborhood near and within the 400 block of Oakland Avenue. OPD patrol located a stolen and parked recreational vehicle and were unable to determine whether the vehicle was occupied. Due to safety considerations, traffic was restricted to and from the area as officers employed various tactics to use time, distance, and communication to ensure the safe apprehension of anyone who may have possibly been inside the vehicle. Oakland Ave was reopened at 11:48 am and the vehicle was safely recovered without incident or arrest.

Anyone else catch men pleasuring themselves in their cars on Grand Ave?
In the past 4 months I have caught 2 different men pleasuring themselves (pants down, genitals out) in the front seat of their cars on Grand Avenue. Both instances have been between Lenox and Perkins St during peak morning commute hours. Has anyone else encountered this? What would you suggest doing? Is this even worth reporting to the police?
*** If you have been doing this in your car in public, I urge you, please go home! A major street with people and children walking around is not the place for you to be getting off.

brain (krakow), Thursday, 14 March 2019 19:34 (six years ago)

There was just a big furore because apparently the ground of the play area in the local park was painted the colours of the Irish tricolour flag overnight by vandals. This is in the east end of Glasgow, so a potentially controversial topic amongst certain people, including the incensed and offended guy who initially posted about it after being sent a photo by a friend. "Think of the kiddiewinks!" etc.

In the end of course, it wasn't any such thing. I believe the play area has always had flooring in green, pinkish and orange sections, though I've never particularly paid attention to it.

At least it was a great post for highlighting the sectarian bigots and credulous idiots in the immediate area. There was some nice piss taking as well, thankfully, with at least one Ivory Coast reference before it all escalated to deletion.

brain (krakow), Thursday, 21 March 2019 12:11 (six years ago)

Are there that many sectarian Irish in Scotland? Dumb question probably, sorry.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Friday, 22 March 2019 05:00 (six years ago)

There are (historically) issues with sectarianism in Glasgow. I'm not really clued up on it as I totally eschew both religion and football, but it's there. Being very lazy with my link choice here sorry, a bit short of time to read any deeper articles: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sectarianism_in_Glasgow

Gonna go down to the playground and paint a big Mexican flag. Tell everyone it's the Irish flag if they complain.

pplains, Friday, 22 March 2019 13:17 (six years ago)

Trayce - there are signs on public transport in Glasgow basically warning you not to talk about religion in public because you could be arrested for inciting violence.

someone had a fight in the alley

I also heard. The men were screaming, but not cursing. I prayed that the Prince of Peace would intervene. I also went to call the police. But didn't because I could no longer hear anything. It sounded like it was right outside my bedroom window in the back. Three young men rent the house next door. They are middle-class, but there is at least one girlfriend who sometimes spends the night. Many are deluded, thinking sin has no consequences. The devil is a liar.

the neighborhood fascists have dropped their masks on this thread asking earnestly: Do anyone else agree that it’s time for the National Guard to step in to handle the crime in the city?

I’d rather the military patrol than watch several drug deals every morning and evening (I work 8+hours a day so I’m sure I’m not seeing the others) or have to dodge strung out people as soon as i get home.

I feel very safe in Israel with all of the military carrying assault rifles......much safer than Baltimore!!

musing on the recent closing of a TCBY, nostalgia for when things were good and people valued their slaves

Where we spend our money creates an important dimension of our reality. Think of a dollar as a vote, then think what are you voting for? Unfortunately, our priorities are often in conflict with our beliefs and desires. I think of that every time I order from Amazon, although I don't know where I might find all the little odd things I need, things that were once sold in 5&Dimes, which themselves had displaced smaller shops. In NYC there was an old couple who had a tiny button shop on First Avenue, that was it, just rows of wooden boxes on the walls. Then next door there was Maria and her husband, who could add up long lists of numbers in his head, who sold fruits and vegetables. The NY I grew up in no longer exists. And it is a fiction for younger generations. Maybe they'll see it in old movies if they're willing to watch. In the 80's began the commodification of everything. I've been reading southern history, and from their point of view, the south fought the Civil War to maintain their version of civilized life (I know, I know). over against a soulless money-oriented north. They argued that as slaves were property, they had value, whereas in the north, workers were expendable, easily replaced, and could be worked to death. The north won, and still is winning, as all living things on earth face extinction.

Not a Facebook group, but I recently discovered a website that my county uses to address problems, called See Click Fix. I learned about it when I had to report a lost cat. Mostly it's public complaints about potholes and zoning issues and unkempt yards. But this morning I came across this gem, submitted around 1 a.m.

SomehSome of the hd channels of Verizon FiOS like fox news, fox business, OAN news have a lot of noise and intermittent sound while the CNN, and CNBC, have perfect HD video and sound. I called Verizon several times to no avail. Also I pay extra for a Greek news channel at 1789 which is completely on the blink for the past 3 months. Since the problem is on only a few HD channels like 616, 617, 618, 603, 611, and a few others, the problem is not in my coaxial cables which have been checked, but in the Verizon hub that generates and transmits the HD signal. This is going on for 3 months now and I am at a loss what to do since Verizon has been unresponsive. Can you please help?

https://i.imgur.com/8BshCxZ.jpg

I don't watch a lot of TV, especially not news, but I have FiOS and this problem is definitely not limited to Fox and OAN.

I know some military vets with heavy PTSD and this time of year is just awful for them, and I feel for pets, too. I also hate holidays, and find fireworks jarring.

That said, they are a concession to public joy that I don't argue about, particularly online, because it's like telling people the truth about cats.

I have to say I don’t really understand the reflexive defense of the asshole overgrown children setting off fireworks when people are trying to sleep except as some third-order anti-police shit, which, I guess, but also the fireworks are annoying

k3vin k., Monday, 22 June 2020 03:51 (five years ago)

Reports of fireworks at all hours of the night (from friends) are making me glad I moved out of the city. At some point I just don’t care what they’re about. I like to sleep and for my family to be able to sleep.

they are very annoying, the commenting on nextdoor has now become Q-anon level though. people are now saying they are psyops, posting screenshots from craiglists of fake fireworks ads for "pro-BLM," and sarcastically suggesting we should give the firework setters "EBT cards."

contorted filbert (harbl), Monday, 22 June 2020 12:21 (five years ago)

contorted filbert (harbl), Monday, 22 June 2020 12:24 (five years ago)

yeah, fuck that bullshit— it's stuff like that which makes me keep my mouth shut and let the young folks have some fun til 11pm most nights in June into July.

my main question is where is all the money for the fireworks coming from, because so many people are laid off, and some displays near me would run in the tens of thousands dollar amount many nights.

I enjoyed watching my mostly white liberal neighborhood group tie itself up in knots over Junteenth celebration fireworks this weekend. We support the spirit of those who would light the fuse in celebration if that is their intent, but we heartily condemn the sound of the resulting explosion in the sky. And while our instinct in these matters is to call the cops to have it stopped, we are concerned that if the fuses are indeed being lit by African Americans out of celebration of their freedom, the police might show up and shoot at them to stop it and we can't have that on our conscience, but many of our dogs don't understand that context and are quite upset about the noise.

There's some guy in our neighborhood that has been lighting off really, really loud firecrackers every day for the past week or so, from about 6:00 until well after midnight. I'm fairly certain it's the same guy who always does it, but this year he's really ramped up his frequency and extended the hours. It's utterly obnoxious.

Look, I get the primal appeal of watching colorful fireworks shoot into the sky, but I don't get the "dur dur me like things go BOOM" idiots that spend, quite literally, hours each and every night making loud bangs.

I have to censor myself on Facebook all the time as is (not for profanity or wacko opinions, just for gentle kidding around that doesn't always go over well on Facebook), and I'll have to work doubly hard with this group. A lot of senior citizens here. There was a post earlier today asking "Where is the closest place to St. Marys to get a covert test?" I did not reply "Probably CIA headquarters."

There has been a huge kerfuffle in my little town recently about marijuana dispensaries. Specifically, while one is not actually opening here, and I doubt one will, our board of trustees did not pass legislation they could have passed that would have allowed them to "opt out" of allowing them until some later date. And they didn't do that. Which I 100% guarantee reflects the views of the large majority of this liberal, pot-friendly town. But a bunch of people are upset about not getting their way and blocking dispensaries, so someone ran a challenger campaign against the incumbent trustees, who tbh seem like legit good people and public servants, like most small town govt people tend to be IME. They ran this really cranky, ridiculous campaign about "lack of transparency" which is complete bullshit, and about how we should have had a referendum (we legally couldn't).

Anyway one challenger dropped out and the other one lost, but one of the incumbent winners got... 420 votes.

The person sent an email asking if someone might be able to help her carefully relocate the nest, since she didn't want to just destroy it, but from the sounds of the outraged responses you'd think she suggested nuking the nest from orbit.

Our Facebook group has gotten really over-moderated in the past few months. The mods lock down and delete any posts with potentially argumentative or controversial topics. That could be on topics ranging from a non-fatal shooting that occurred down the block last week to someone getting mad that their neighbors had left a plate of leftover hot dogs out for wildlife and pets to possibly ingest.

I was there.

Anyway, we had never had a nightmare-level Facebook group. There were very occasional off-color remarks by heavy Trumper types and mild comments skirmishes on some relatively weightless topics (such as the hot dogs). But no one was really getting TOO fired up. So I made a post in the group ASKING why posts were getting locked down and deleted, which was promptly locked down and deleted.

Wow I don't know what world you folks are inhabiting because this all just sounds pretty bizarro-world to me. I am on decent terms with my neighbors and haven't heard anything this bizarre. Hot dogs on a manhole I know, I know, it's serious.

I heard if a robin nest is moved the mom abandons it so maybe thats the outrage? This could indeed not be true.

Yeah, I've heard that before too, but no idea as to the truth of it. It was just the out of scale responses. The person asking the question was looking for help/advice and was clearly approaching it from a, "hey I don't want to disturb these birds if possible but also I need to get my mail". And only one of the responses was even helpful, most were along the lines of, "How dare you! Stupid moron, leave it where it is".

Sounds like a local Facebook group.

I've been trolling mine hard today. People complaining about dogs barking in yards (as I said above) and one woman said they should be crated so I replied "OH YHOUD RATHER HAVE YOUR DOG LOCKED IN A TINY CAGE FOR HOURS THAN OUT IN THE FRESH AIR?????'

I've also implied that everyone who wants to call animal control is pro-dog murder.

Im having a great time tbh.

I am actually quite sympathetic to all the neighborhood group complaints about our town switching from meters to a parking app. I fucking hate those apps.

Honestly, I dont love the idea of a dog barking all day either but the way they instantly piled on the poor woman, I couldn't resist trolling.

I was just talking to a neighbor who also moved from the city, but before me, about how when your neighborhood is quiet, there's this natural human tendency to look for stuff to be interested in. So you start thinking extremely dumb shit like "huh, I've never seen that car parked in front of my neighbor's house before," or "I don't recognize that kid playing with Emily across the street." I feel like I have to actively guard against that kind of thinking to avoid becoming one of those people.

Oh yeah, that's a big part of it. Suburbia. Our nextdoor app is 90% "There's a man walking down our street I've never seen before" and the response is always 'Call the cops"

Oh and they have a little template to describe the person:

Height
Weight:
Clothing:
Physical appearance:

Just say black. Jesus.

Oh and you know it's not a white guy when they start with "There's a gentleman walking down my street..."

When did 'gentleman' become code for 'Im racist and scared'

gunshots and how violent our area is.

Haha, this like Chicago social media par for the course. Fireworks v. gunshots, why is there a helicopter, lost/loose dog, can anyone recommend a plumber.

WHO'S CAR IS PARKED IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE IT'S BEEN THERE FOR 3 DAYS I'M CALLING THE POLICE TO HAVE IT TOWED

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 27 April 2023 19:09 (two years ago)

I hate those parking apps too. Large portions of our town switched over to those, but they also didn't bother putting in paystations in many places. So if you are visiting and don't have the app, there are areas consisting of 4-5 square blocks where you are absolutely fucked because there isn't anywhere else to pay, unless you know where to walk to get to one of the few stations.

Also, when my parents were visiting from out of town, they drove us all to dinner at a restaurant, when they parked I had to add their license plate to the app to pay for their parking. I ended up having to completely delete the app and reinstall to get their car to quit popping up as the default for months afterwards.

xp - clearly Andy the Grasshopper lives in my neighborhood! lol

with rare exceptions, my neighborhood mailing list is so wholesome and positive it's kind of disgusting ... mostly people loaning each other tools, finding lost pets, and hosting chili cook-offs and pancake breakfasts
