Murray/Kyrgios round one BRING IT ON
― lex pretend, Friday, 28 August 2015 13:42 (ten years ago)
From qualifying: battle of the ages, 16yo CiCi Bellis beat 44yo Kimiko Date-Krumm in the first round, 46 61 64. Poor Kimiko. That would've been a neat youngest vs oldest match except 15yo wild card Claire Liu, born in 2000, has caused quite the stir - wins over Cepede Royg and Cepelova, just Panova between her and the main draw. Thrilled to see 19yo Mayo Hibi and her 1HBH into the final Q round too. Meanwhile Taylor Townsend and Donna Vekic just keep falling - qualifying losses for both, Vekic stays out of the top 100 but Townsend is now firmly outside the top 250.
In the MD...I'm guessing Serena has her token scare against Lucic-Baroni in round 2? It's hard to predict against her getting that calendar year Slam. Hoping Bencic is her QF opponent, would like to see a rematch.
Sharapova hasn't played since Wimbledon and gets the feisty Gavrilova in round one, that's an upset special in the making.
Bouchard has beaten three players since March and has drawn two of them in her opening two rounds, what luck. Meanwhile Kerber has come into the last three Slams in terrific form only to be rinsed with her R3 draws - Muguruza at RG and Wim, Azarenka here. Speaking of Muguruza, also thinking that she'll fall to Witthoeft in R1.
Nadal/Coric round one! REPEAT YOUR WIN BORNA! Even if Rafa escapes that, a draw of Fognini, Raonic/Lopez and then Djokovic in the QF isn't going to halt his decline.
I keep forgetting Cilic is the defending champion but that's as soft a draw as you could ask for. Slumping Dimitrov, Ferrer who hasn't played in months, permanently injured Nishikori.
Ugh, Nedovyesov is just the kind of journeyman that Hewitt grinds out another ~heroic five-setter over before we're finally rid of him.
Kokkinakis/Gasquet round one is sort of the B version of Murray/Kyrgios.
― lex pretend, Friday, 28 August 2015 13:52 (ten years ago)
High Drama! I don't even know which outcome I prefer!
Ugh. Looks like Karlovic has a walk thru at least to the 3rd round. How dull.
Digging Bencic lately. Like her game a lot. Flew under my radar for a long time I guess.

I need to move to a civilised country that allows me to easily bet on tennis - def wouldve had tsurenko/lepchenko today already and timia bacsinszky to get upset
― johnny crunch, Tuesday, 1 September 2015 16:22 (ten years ago)
it's surprising to me that the US doesn't have a fantasy sports tennis option.
Murray looked really bad but we've been through that early rounds dance with him before
― Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 2 September 2015 02:19 (ten years ago)
yea kyrgios prob couldve won that match
― johnny crunch, Wednesday, 2 September 2015 02:25 (ten years ago)
Robson's collapse from 4-0 up in the third was kind of sad...her comeback is going very slowly. Bacsinszky losing wasn't a shock either, her good form seems to have evaporated post-Wimbledon. Surprised Muguruza didn't get upset though! She looked a mess in the warm-ups and Witthoeft was a tricky opponent.
Tiafoe was really impressive in patches, but Troicki unexpectedly kept it together.
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 2 September 2015 05:49 (ten years ago)
Rublev needs to work on his returning, but that's pretty much his only major issue from what I can see. Best 17 year old since Rafa imvho

Thanks for the link Lex.
― xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 2 September 2015 08:40 (ten years ago)
Rublev's temperament is...also a thing. Not necessarily a weakness but not always edifying either.

That said I did catch the end of Cetkovska/Woz, hahahahahaha at Wozniacki's sour face after she went 2R, 2R, 4R, 2R in this year's Slams. You'll always have the Kuala Lumpur title Caroline.
Rafa! The decline is truly real. Not so much that he lost to Fognini but from two sets up...

so Isner finally got broken here!
fell asleep midway through the first Anderson/Murray set and sort of shocked Murray managed to lose to such a limited player who didn't seem to be treeing
Halep/Lisicki...lol @ Sabine's collapse, Halep showed good fighting spirit but god everything else in her game needs to be stepped up. She hasn't played Vika since she became good but I still don't think she'll win.
your QFS:
(1) Serena Williams vs. (23) Venus WilliamsKristina Mladenovic vs. Roberta Vinci(5) Petra Kvitova vs. (26) Flavia Pennetta(20) Victoria Azarenka vs. (2) Simona Halep
so nutty that Vinci and Pennetta do so disproportionately well here...third USO QF for Vinci (none at the other Slams), sixth for Pennetta (one at the other Slams). Neither of them have games that are any more suited to hard courts than anything else. Very kind draw for Mladenovic but she's improved a ton this year so I guess the Slam breakthrough was inevitable.
H2Hs:
Serena 15-11 Venus (9-8 on hard, 1-0 this year)Mladenovic 0-0 VinciKvitova 3-3 Pennetta (2-1 on hard)Azarenka 2-0 Halep (both on hard)
going with Serena, Kiki, Flavia, Vika
(1) Novak Djokovic vs. (18) Feliciano Lopez(19) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. (9) Marin Cilic(5) Stan Wawrinka vs. (15) Kevin Anderson(12) Richard Gasquet vs. (2) Roger Federer
Djokovic 5-0 Lopez (4-0 on hard)Cilic 4-3 Tsonga (Tsonga 3-2 on hard, Cilic 1-0 this year)Anderson 4-3 Wawrinka (3-3 on hard, Anderson 1-0 this year)Federer 14-2 Gasquet (8-0 on hard, 1-0 this year)
Haha I'd forgotten about that Wawrinka/Anderson h2h, Anderson's won the last 4, all since Stan became a Slam champion. Wouldn't be shocked if it happened again, Stan pulled himself together well vs Young but he seems pretty in-and-out mentally...not the best against a servebot

Let's not forget Gasquet's perfect record in Slam QFs. It's only the sixteens he has trouble with. ;)
― Michael Jones, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 14:58 (nine years ago)
Vinci! First Slam SF at the age of 32. That match was shit to start with and got better and better - a bit sublime-to-ridiculous-and-back-again in the last set, that epic 3-3 game...Kiki was just out of gas by the end.

Tsonga looked like he was gonna totally flop at 4-5 but saved two MPs brilliantly, another at 5-6 and dominated the TB...he was def the better player in that set, it always felt like this would go 5

nice comeback here by tsonga

His spirited defence of an unlikely Slam title is reminding me of Costa @ RG 2003. And it was a pretty soft draw to the QF but that was impressive an impressive performance indeed there
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 23:20 (nine years ago)
there's a weird sort of buzz on twitter for this match among people who don't usually pay that much attention to tennis

crazy that someone who is practically undefeated this year seems so shaky at these events, but Serena on her A-game is basically impossible to beat so yeah

Federer/Wawrinka is pretty intriguing I think...they both looked brilliant in their QFs.
Williams 4-0 Vinci (2-0 on hard, 1-0 this year)Pennetta 3-1 Halep (1-1 on hard, Halep 1-0 this year)
Vinci has never taken a set off Serena and I think a similar 4 and 3 scoreline to Toronto the other week is her best case scenario. Pennetta beat Halep en route to her first SF here two years ago - the first Slam where Halep was really expected to go deep, and Halep's first week two appearance. If Halep comes back down to earth after the Azarenka heights or if the Halep of round 4 shows up, she'll be in trouble...
Djokovic 13-0 Cilic (9-0 on hard, 2-0 this year)Federer 16-3 Wawrinka (11-0 on hard, 1-1 this year)
Wawrinka's h2hs against the elite are so lop-sided because they've been beating him for most of his career - credit to him that he's improved so much that his matches against them are real toss-ups now. Federer's net-charging tactic is a bit overrated by the commentators, brilliant that he's adding more dimensions to his game but he lost most of the ones I saw him try vs Gasquet. A lot of it is the fear tactic, players who fear what they perceive he's capable of at net and who then flop the pass, to me it's an opportunistic temporary tactic but something that most will cotton on to quickly. Rather like how Radwanska never repeated her receiving stance from the time she beat Sharapova here.
― lex pretend, Thursday, 10 September 2015 11:42 (nine years ago)
Pennetta gon' rue being so casual on that point for 5-1, I think
― lex pretend, Friday, 11 September 2015 15:42 (nine years ago)

― lex pretend, Friday, 11 September 2015 15:44 (nine years ago)

― lex pretend, Friday, 11 September 2015 16:21 (nine years ago)
At this point I'd like to believe Halep isn't too lightweight to win a Slam but she's not offering a whole lot of evidence for that.
― lex pretend, Friday, 11 September 2015 16:25 (nine years ago)

― johnny crunch, Friday, 11 September 2015 21:15 (nine years ago)
espn showed a graphic tryna include it w/ miracle on ice, buster douglas, giants over pats idk some other crzy ones
Vinci was def not 300-1 to win lol, that was the announcer lying and fabricating. 7-1, iirc.
This loss really exemplifies why the Calendar Slam is different to four-in-a-row, it's why Serena's USO last year (zero top 10 opponents) is rated better than her Cincy title a couple of weeks ago (two top 10 opponents). It's just...the external mental pressure regardless of the actual level of tennis required.
On which note, Vinci has never been considered a choker. You can't be, in the 21st century with her game. Those two volleys in the last game, no one else on the tour can make, and Serena would have chased down their attempts and probably won the points.
First women's Slam final since 1979 without a top 20 player. Insane that they're two BFFs who've known each other since childhood. The 1999 RG girls' doubles champions!

Coming into this thread having watched almost nothing to point out that Lex actually predicted a Pennetta slam title a la Schiavone some years ago on one of these threads. As amazing as Vinci's win is, I'm definitely pulling for Flavia tomorrow.
― oh, boy, .GIF! That's where I'm a Viking! (edwardo), Friday, 11 September 2015 22:14 (nine years ago)
oh i think you're overplaying this aspect of it. serena easily could have lost in any of her 11 (!!) other three-setters in slams this year. she can't win every match, even if the sorry state of the tour makes it seem like it
― usic ally (k3vin k.), Friday, 11 September 2015 22:20 (nine years ago)

Cilic was an embarrassment, 60 61 62 actually flatters him bc Novak was bored to tears in the third set, as was I
Stan/Fed is fun though pretty one-way right now
Schiavone, Pennetta, Vinci and Errani make quite a quadrumvirate of Italian tennis underdogs coming into their own as veterans.

11 games combined for the men's SF losers. The eternal question of which is better, the WTA's chaos or the ATP's NID deference
― lex pretend, Saturday, 12 September 2015 01:00 (nine years ago)
Vinci v Pennetta feels a bit like Myskina v Dementieva crossed with Schiavone's first Slam final. Childhood friends vibe x veteran Italian spirit. Hopefully the quality is more like the latter.

you know who has had the best match out of anyone -- aside from one of the ball boys who's nonchalantly caught several 130mph errant burners -- is the chair umpire, she's made several overrules and has been right every time

saw the first set-and-a-half before falling asleep, felt a lot like the Wim final. Commentators fawning over Federer's surprise returns making me cringe now, can't even bring myself to acknowledge their name for it and knew that it wouldn't be successful against Djokovic a second time - it's a mental tactic more than anything else. Awesome year for Novak, feels routine at this point. RG is the question now...
― lex pretend, Monday, 14 September 2015 08:19 (nine years ago)
I saw three sets and went to bed at 3am. I am thanking the gods for the existence of coffee..
It was closer than Wimbledon and the 'surprise return' was deployed every now and then - it did seem to seed bits of doubt in Djokovic. Overall it was quite a thing to see in a slam final, from someone like Federer who is thought as the height of elegance. He'll do what it takes, and we all know that.
Overall though it was a brilliant match - the way D answered some of that stuff from Fed (those remarkable back-to-back lobs), the 20-shot game where Novak held on for dear life and really was under the cosh for most of the 3rd set before - really almost out of nowhere - turning around with some magnificent tennis to break Fed's serve. Knew the game was up at the end of that.

Only criticism of Fed is he didn't seem to carry those kinds of tactics in the 1st set.
But its stil head-scratching how he can keep defying his age (all the questionable strength of the tour aside) and doing all of this. Maybe 35 year old slam champions will be the norm in 20 years.

Also I bet Boris Becker still has awesome thighs.

Having congratulated myself at getting the kids to bed by 9:40, the rain delay totally ruined any chances I had of streaming this so I was left with fitful dreams in which Federer went 6-1 6-3 up, only to wreck his ankle stepping on a stray ball. Woke at 1:45am to see (through my ScoreFlash phone app only - no video) that Fed was still capable of walking, but actually a set down. Woke again around 3:15 to see Djokovic go a double-break up in set 4. Drifted in and out of sleep as Fed mounted his comeback. If he'd taken any of the bps in the last game I may well have sat up and tried to find a stream on the laptop, sleep be damned.
Looking fwd to the roof next year - though the USTA will probably go with 8pm local Monday night or something idiotic for the men's final.
