Costa's Horse Money not on disc/Bluray til March. I don't see the rush, and I'm not 'done' with 2014 yet.
NYC commercial releases of the year, which is my standard. I don't count even those films that are 5+ years old (especially if I saw them at a festival or one-off in the previous decade):
https://letterboxd.com/alexfung/list/new-york-city-2015-commercial-releases/
And you should make an effort to see a number of these, especially #48:

Filmcomment list is cool - don't really get the love for Clouds of Sils Maria, and About Elly was made in 2009 (but then I guess they have the Rivette, too)
― Chicamaw (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 27 January 2016 20:36 (nine years ago)
both those last two had a weeklong (plus) run in the US for the first time.
I have plenty of disagreements with the FC list but every poll ever, you know. It's a starting point.

Great image choice btw Gukbe - however ppl felt about Hard to be a God, it's hard to deny that particular sequence, a moment of pure cinema no less!
― Chicamaw (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 27 January 2016 23:08 (nine years ago)
what is happening in that sequence? i have the movie on my watchlist but haven't gotten to it yet. that image reminds me of andrei rublev
i really enjoyed clouds of sils maria
― arts and crafts THIS GUY (daria-g), Thursday, 28 January 2016 05:00 (nine years ago)
In that sequence we see the main character smear a big load of gloopy mud over his face (it's featured in this trailer for the film):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11sMDQIgggA
As to its meaning, I took it as sign of the character's complicity in this strange world's cruelty and obscenity - he too is in the shit, and he knows it, and he is ashamed of it. But lots of the film's meaning is deliberately alien, so that what looks superficially like 'our' world is revealed to be 'other' (for example, there are a great many strange little rituals associated with eating throughout the film).
― Chicamaw (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 28 January 2016 06:41 (nine years ago)
Reckon Hard to be a God does suffer in comparisons with Rublev and Marketa... Too 'loud', overdoes 'suffering' (almost a cliche). I don't want meaning to be telegraphed but I'm not going to be overwhelmed by three hours of noise so I'm looking for what else might be there. I really want to read the book and maybe watch it again but it'll be years to see it at another screening.

Amour Fou ain't gonna win this, is it.

It was just released theatrically in N America in a package of Academy-nominated short films...
It is 17 minutes long. It would be akin to including a single in an albums poll, oui?
I smell "the fewer rules the better, cuz just movies!" Polls are the worst.

See, the second half of this sentence invalidates the first. Two or three "festival screenings" and a "theatrical release" are different things.

Morbs, two years ago I tried to do it by academy rules but it was very unpopular. Don't really know what I can do other than say it was shown in a cinema in 2015.

Not qualified to vote in this, due to my lack of appreciation for The Great Man and my vast appreciation of Mad Max, but I'll be rooting for Mustang & Amour Fou & Tangerine. Prolly would have thrown some points to Hard To Be A God and Taxi, neither of which was perfect, but I would sit and rewatch over a lot of stuff I theoretically rated higher at the time. Oh and Phoenix, which to me is a minor Petzold but I genuinely think he is the best director working today. Prolly forgetting a bunch of good stuff, but it's the things that stay with you that you should rate, yeah?

one of my regrets of last year was not staying for the Q&A after horse money - my friend didn't want to stay and we were both hungry and in need of refreshment - but I loved it. Never seen any costa before but I ended up seeing it twice at the cinema which I hardly ever do. Other regrets of last year: same as you! And missing amour fou, which did actually play here unlike HOAD and AN

I watched amour fou! It is really, really good. Still digesting but it will prob make my ballot if I vote.
― anglos with derpy phasis (wins), Saturday, 27 February 2016 22:09 (nine years ago)
Room was much better than its trailer (largely on the strength of the performances), and though it won't reckon in the higher reaches of my ballot I'd still say it's worth seeing for the experience.
We just finished watching Amour Fou! It was uncannily sensitive...and I liked how such opulence could be made to feel so stagnant and claustrophobic. It was like a muted rollercoaster. Very funny too.
Have managed five today. Must watch Horse Money, Inside Out and The Wonders before voting. I'd like to include Mustang, but there's no way of me viewing it as a 2015 release being that it's only just surfacing in UK cinemas now.

― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Tuesday, 1 March 2016 20:05 (nine years ago)
Yup. It's pretty good, but I wasn't close to thinking of voting for it. A bit too much western by the book.

Ah for crying out loud - completely slipped my mind to vote for Girl Walks. Too low, then.
― painfully alive in a drugged and dying culture (DavidM), Tuesday, 1 March 2016 20:32 (nine years ago)
So, a bit of an explanation. This is the alternate 38 (push the previous two down one if you wish to recognize this as the canon choice). One voter counted the trilogy as one film, then a late ballot voted for two of them separately. Given that critics tended to review them separately, but include them in lists as a whole, I think either way is probably fair, and I didn't want the voter who split them to not get recognition.
38*. Arabian Nights 77 pts. 4 voteshttp://s28.postimg.org/tzawqshzx/38_Arabian_Nights.jpg
The trilogy as one film got 30 pts. (tied for 77th), Volume 1 got 33 pts. (tied for 73rd), and Volume 3 got 14 pts (tied for 152nd).
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Tuesday, 1 March 2016 20:35 (nine years ago)
Yeah, I thought Girl was from last year. Oops.
Fred, I didn't think Slow West was "by the book." It's so stylized and odd!
― Cherish, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 20:45 (nine years ago)

this film was kinda a retort to critics - “no, i’m not an asshole for making the act of killing i really care about these people and think this was horrible” BUT - i already understood that from the act of killing
― i;m thinking about thos Beans (Michael B), Tuesday, 1 March 2016 21:07 (nine years ago)
I was the voter who voted for Arabian Nights as one film. But I saw them in one day, with two breaks in-between, so I've always thought of them as a whole.
x-post: Should probably have said 'indie-western by the book'. I don't think it was stylized and odd enough. It's no Jauja.

― Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 21:20 (nine years ago)
Feel like maybe Act of Killing blew up too much and had too many dissenters for Look of Silence to have the kind of impact it should have (I think it's a better film, and I really loved Act of Killing). But maybe it's also smaller in scope so it's less open to critical buzztakes. The scene with the daughter and the blood drinking revelation was incredible. The range of her reactions is brutal to watch.

I didn't so much go strictly by release date, but rather whether things felt 2015. And A Girl Walks Home At Night and Inherent Vice both seemed like a long time ago. Never got a chance to see Arabian Nights yet, And I thought P'tit Quinquin was great (much more so than his previous work), but I didn't vote for TV series.
― Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 22:21 (nine years ago)
Agreed on the quirk level of Li'l Quinquin.
Listen to Me Marlon is good but I was never blown away. Nicely put together and I imagine that going through all those tapes was tedious as hell, but it felt like there were a lot of gaps (I wanted more from late 60s nadir).
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Tuesday, 1 March 2016 22:21 (nine years ago)
Li'l Quinquin just didn't seem to add up to enough for me? But it's quirk-level is so high that it kinda transcends the scale. The funeral! And the song the sister is singing is pretty cool, actually.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 22:25 (nine years ago)
Listen To Me Marlon was interesting enough, but I didn't see a lot of filmaking craft really. Should have voted for more documentaries (ie. more than zero documentaries) given that they make up like 50% of my viewing, but I didn't think of any in the 5 minutes I spent on my ballot. The Possibilities Are Endless maybe should have been there? The Look Of Silence seemed good, but I still had that weird taste in my mouth from the approach of the first one.

Quinquin I would have considered just on the basis of how I voted for most of my ballot, which is how much certain shots and frames stay with me, and how much I'd want to rewatch, but I genuinely didn't realised it was eligible as a film. I recall recommending it to My Special Friend though, the only person I speak to who has any appreciation for the stuff I watch.
Jauja was nice, forgot about it. I didn't even use up all my spots, just felt my ballot woould have more truth if I did it without making reference to anything. I really could have stuck some of this stuff on there, yeah I suck.
― Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 22:33 (nine years ago)
A Girl Walks Home alone pretty much fulfilled the pitch I first heard for it: what if _then_-Jarmusch made a vampire film as well?

Jauja, yay! I think I voted for Jauja last year. Mistake. It even got a limited release in Denmark this year. It's a weird film to watch as a Dane, though, the handling of dialogue is pretty atrocious, but on the other hand it seems based on Danish culture and experience to a big extent.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 22:37 (nine years ago)

So this year's minor Polling disaster (that's not happening irl at this very moment, at least) is that in copying everything from the google sheets to the mac equivalent, I didn't notice that it greys out the first line but still numbers it.
Which means everything is one number higher than it has been so far. Meaning I have to go remake all that I've done so far (which I didn't spend much time on so nbd but still).
There will be a number jump in the next one and I'll throw in the bonus New Number 40 (If you didn't count Arabian Nights) at the end of the countdown today. SORRY!
But all points assignation and vote counting is correct.

Surprised Sicario made it despite letting the audience off the hook with its morose revenge fantasy.

Well I'd debate the first part, and don't feel the vampire bisnes falls into the second.

Sicario was awfully... competent?
The biggest effects The Oscars had on me was making me want to rewatch Sicario, which I wasn't taken with all that much the first time around. Deakins+Score+Blunt are all A+. Everything else...hmmm. I think Syriana had a lot more fun with this sort of thing.
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Tuesday, 1 March 2016 22:57 (nine years ago)

Tom Hardy is ridiculous in that movie, which is the register in which it should have been made rather than all the self-seriousness. The floating around the river evasion scene was great though.

I think Senna is better. The very personal focus doesn't do well in an artist-portrait, I don't think. It overwhelms her songwriting in a way it could never overwhelm Sennas racedriving. It becomes so bugged down in talking about her directness and honesty, that it can't discuss how she turned her life into art, especially not once she goes from the 'authentic' sound of Frank to the more modern - and more interesting, imo - sound of Back to Black.

― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 00:52 (nine years ago)
As a Baumbach defender generally, the love for this one baffles me a bit. like it's not BAD bad, but I will honestly say I preferred "While We're Young". Does that make all my opinions here invalid?
― Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Wednesday, 2 March 2016 01:03 (nine years ago)
I thought While We're Young was more straightforwardly funny at times but the screwball house visit in Mistress America is better than anything in WWY.
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 01:04 (nine years ago)
Also I think it's a little more insightful about it's characters. Less old timers haranguing about the youth.

Although not superior to Francis Ha, Mistress America was in a flapdoodle sphere on its own and I relished what it risked.
Magic Mike XXL = best Hollywood gay film of the year.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 01:09 (nine years ago)
Think I greatly underrated MMXXL. Caught about 30 minutes on TV last week and I didn't care about the shaggy road trip story at all.
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 01:11 (nine years ago)
VOTED FOR MAGIC MIKE XXL! So far ahead of the original (which was not bad) that I had to go back rewatch the original, see if I was missing anything. And I'm glad to have seen that again, but I stand by the new one. Didn't really get the character motivation in the first one compared with the second, but that's just maybe where I am in my life right now.
― Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Wednesday, 2 March 2016 01:12 (nine years ago)
Also Channing Tatum who I just considered beefcake at the time of the first has really blossomed into something special (still fine beefcake, don't get me wrong)
― Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Wednesday, 2 March 2016 01:13 (nine years ago)
They're drastically different movies. First one is a lot about post-recession America etc (that great cut just as he's about to lose it at the bank) and full of smart character stuff dotted around the edges. Second is full-on dance-cheese but in a pretty radical way. Both great.

yea its interesting, first time ive seen it articulated like this and its otm. 2nd one just didnt work for me at all though, it leans in to its reputation so much as to be basically parody imo..waay less interesting than the 1st

The Martian zzzzz...

The second Magic Mike is like the one last mission for the old dudes, go out in a blaze of glory or whatever, it's The Wild Bunch or whatever.

Or whatever.
― Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Wednesday, 2 March 2016 01:29 (nine years ago)
I don't see MMXXL as parody; it's its own creation. It's about guys being gazed, guys being gayzed, guys not giving a damn about being gayzed/gazed.

― Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Wednesday, 2 March 2016 01:31 (nine years ago)
Martian was a bit hokey at points (Scott can't do comedy) but okay enough for the most part. Fine to sit through. Might be one of those that I get caught watching again when I'm hungover and it's on some cable channel in a few year's time.
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 01:31 (nine years ago)
If the first film was meant to be partly based on Channing Tatum's life, and you extrapolate the second from that, it's him coming to terms with his gayness
― Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Wednesday, 2 March 2016 01:32 (nine years ago)

originality in XXL comes in its style, not its material.

― Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Wednesday, 2 March 2016 01:45 (nine years ago)
You'll have to wait until Thursday for the final 20 to see if Bridge of Spies made it. Unless I get home tomorrow earlier than expected.
Now, in case you missed it, I fucked up the numbering so if you *don't* count Arabian Nights's placement in the poll as valid, here's your number 40:
40. Star Wars: The Force Awakens (d: Abrams) - 74 pts. 3 voteshttp://s17.postimg.org/qgowawdu7/40_Star_Wars_The_Force_Awakens.jpg

― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 02:19 (nine years ago)
So I saw all of these by now except Arabian Nights, Amy, and the Star Wars bisnes. No real stinkers out of what I seen aside from The Martian, maybe Sicario. 4 #1's, if you include Gueros which wasn't noted in this recap. Only 4 of mine, 3 low down numbers which I don't overly care about, but Mustang (top 3 for me) deserved better. Mad Max is totally gunna own this tho, and not undeservedly
― Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Wednesday, 2 March 2016 02:45 (nine years ago)
Star Wars is fine for what it is, but have to admit I'm happy it isn't higher on the list. Was going to write about how that and Amour Fou would be competing for second place, and kinda happy the joke isn't on Haussner...
Saw Carol this morning. Wow! Would def have voted for that if I'd seen it before. It also made me think less of 45 Years, honestly, for some weird reason. Both films are kinda chilly and technical, but 45 Years didn't really do anything for me. I admire how well it's made, but I never think about it, really.
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 2 March 2016 11:18 (nine years ago)
What I've seen. The Diary of a Teenage Girl is some thrash poptmist vote, was probably toward the end of my ballot.
37. The Look of Silence (d: Oppenheimer)- 77 pts. 4 votes35. Inherent Vice (d: Anderson) - 81 pts. 4 votes34. Li'l Quinquin (d: Dumont) - 83 pts. 3 votes33. Listen to Me Marlon (d: Riley) - 84 pts, 4 votes25. The Diary of a Teenage Girl (d: Heller) - 120 pts. 5 votes
All I'm interested in seeing from the ones I have not (although I'll probably get to see Amy as it will gets reg repeated on TV here, mroe thrash poptimism).
37*. Arabian Nights (d: Gomes) 77 pts. 4 votes

I think Inherent Vice opened on like the second week of January 2015 in the UK, so definitely eligible for this poll. Hard to be a God also only got a UK cinema release (and simultaneous home video release) in 2015. I also voted for Serra's brilliant Story of My Death in this poll, because it did not, as far as I know, get any UK cinema screenings, and made its UK debut on home video last year. Arabian Nights hasn't yet had a UK cinema release (I think New Wave films are handling it for cinemas and home video) - I managed to catch it at the Glasgow Film Festival a couple of weeks ago (to my mind the first part is the best, the third the weakest (those bloody birds), though all three parts have their longueurs).
The UK did get Star Wars (very) slightly ahead of the US, tho.
― Chicamaw (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 12:07 (nine years ago)
I couldn't vote for Hard to be a God... Not only did I see it in - spring - 2014, it had it's world premiere in 13. I mean, I get that I should just vote tactically, because, this is about fun and hype and talking about great films, but it just felt wrong... Story of my Death is really good, yeah. He has a new one coming!
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 2 March 2016 12:12 (nine years ago)
Yeah, w/ Jean-Pierre Léaud as Louis XIV - excited!

I also voted for Serra's brilliant Story of My Death in this poll, because it did not, as far as I know, get any UK cinema screenings, and made its UK debut on home video last year.
I missed its only screening ever at the ICA.
Really wanted to vote for that and No Home Movie. One screening each. Mad Max is seen as more important #lolFeminism
― xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 2 March 2016 12:19 (nine years ago)
No Home Movie hopefully gets more releases this year? Because, fuck, it needs to be talked about at some point. Really touching. Hope to see it again on tuesday.

DoB certainly had some level of craft to it, but I found it ultimately underwhelming. I remember very little about it from just a few months ago, whereas Strickland's previous 2 are still with me after years.
― Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Wednesday, 2 March 2016 21:55 (nine years ago)
Assassin left me cold too. The plot was too deliberately obscured to carry me through the long takes of not much happening. Should try again when I'm less tired though and maybe soak up the atmosphere. So many good articles about it, especially on how to watch it, which is probably my failing. Still don't know who the masked person was.
Duke of Burgundy very funny.

The combo of Hou and genre was what made the Assassin so electrifying! It's like a fairy tale observed from a distance, or recovered from the depths of memory - so dreamlike and mysterious the deeper you go into it, but also very moving, I think.

you've written that sentiment before and I don't get it. "Touristic" denotes a superficial interest in these girls, which I didn't experience.

I loved Girlhood so much. Tomboy was excellent too, but this felt like a step up in terms of naturalism employed to adrenaline-inducing effect. I remember the scene where they're all dancing in the bedroom as being the atmospheric pinnacle. I cried in the street for hours after watching this to counterbalance the adrenaline.

There's a thread where people see the director (white middle class) going in and making a film about a section of society she doesn't understand, which might be fair. I thought the main girl's performance did that impressive amateur thing of using her lack of skills to an advantage, plus the framing is excellent throughout (I haven't seen it since the cinema some time ago, so that's my recollection). Also the Diamonds scene is amazing.
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 23:18 (nine years ago)
The key to it is the lack of judgment mixed with the lack of...doom? She's stuck in a lot of ways but she's trying out different ways of taking control, not always to positive effect but it never judges her for her choices.
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 23:19 (nine years ago)
What I wrote at the time: Perceptive about how mimicry and conformity can nevertheless lead to deep friendships, Girlhood is also cold-eyed in its tracking of how a teenager in her larval stage will discard these friends when she becomes the person she may or not be, a development impossible to imagine without those friends (often friends are tests we perform on our tolerance). When Marieme falls in with a local drug gang she shaves her head, assumes the name Vic, and projects a fearsome androgynous solidity. Although the weakest section as written, Sciamma doesn’t forget about her actress. Not once is Touré satisfied with projecting one emotion; this is an actress blessed with a face the camera loves and which can spot her thinking in character. I wanted to protect Marieme but expected a rebuff — if she didn’t she’d disappoint me.

^awesome, my #4. the scene depicted in that still is one of the greatest and most brutal things i've ever witnessed on film. about a quarter of the audience left during it at my screening. idiots!
― Laertiades (imago), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 23:24 (nine years ago)
I really liked the other two in the trilogy but this one mostly didn't work for me, save a few scenes with King Christian and, of course, that scene, which was as you said.
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 23:25 (nine years ago)
I was drifting off with all the melancholic quirk but then that scene happened and it took me a minute to realise just what was going on. Overwhelming.
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 23:26 (nine years ago)
that scene didn't work for me. highlight was stomping tavern song.

"Girlhood" sounds enticing. "A Pigeon..." doesnt tbh.
― i;m thinking about thos Beans (Michael B), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 23:31 (nine years ago)
It's Charles, not Christian. Christian is what the Danish kings are called :)
Probably should have voted for this one, but another case of my own release date confusion. The scene with the dead man on the ferry is classic.
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 2 March 2016 23:31 (nine years ago)
So nice to hear people's enthusiasms about Girlhood!
This was my first Roy Andersson film and had not been prepared for the tone. How are bleakness and silliness the two competing extremes? The photographic staging and vortexes of repetition are stifling. Got to watch the rest.
― tangenttangent, Wednesday, 2 March 2016 23:31 (nine years ago)
least of the recent Andersson films; hardening into shtick.
― we can be heroes just for about 3.6 seconds (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 23:32 (nine years ago)
For me, it just felt like everything had led, meanderingly or otherwise, to this point. It more or less validated the entire exercise. Although I certainly like his aesthetic besides (and yeah, the ferry bit!)

The surreal dialogue is some of the best in film, and everyone is being literally pissed on for about 70% of the time. What is not to like?
Literally no one brings this up. Its purely about the look of it and the intensity. Suffers from being compared to Tarkovsky or Vlacil.

― Laertiades (imago), Thursday, 3 March 2016 22:02 (nine years ago)
I was just mesmerised by Hard To Be A God, didn't feel like 3 hours. Just so much going on i in every frame. Looks like I put it #7. Taxi I put #6,yes it's the weakest of the last 3, by some margin IMO, but that doesn't cancel out it's brilliance. Similar story with Phoenix, possibly the weakest film he's ever made (stagey in a different, lesser way than his best), but still my #5 film of the year. I had voter's remorse after my thrown together ballot, but no regrets about any of them.Amour Fou my #4, I just loved the staging of it, really funny too

I realized I should have added the worst film category someway during the tabulation stage. That said, I'm thinking there's a difference between "worst film" and "biggest disappointment", the latter of which hurts more but is probably not totally fair. Eden was my biggest disappointment by miles (Mia Hansen Love made a film about French Touch! And it was boring with a tedious main character and nothing of interest to say and bloody hell the music couldn't even liven it up), but easily the worst film I saw all year was Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 and that's not fair on Mia Hansen Love at all.
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Friday, 4 March 2016 01:20 (nine years ago)
I'll ask again: the Assayas film was the worst of the year? I thought Dennis Perrin tweets would've shown you how English subtitles shouldn't work.

It played here a few weeks before Xmas. I talked myself hoarse urging people to see it.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 4 March 2016 02:10 (nine years ago)
Criterion just released Heart of a Dog for rental on iTunes and Vudu on Tuesday. I plan to catch it in the next week. The Forbidden Room, however, was (and remains afaik) damn near impossible to see. If it played in the DC area last year, I totally missed the memo. It's the one I really, really wanted to catch up on as well.

i thought Assayas was on Stewart's side.
I thought he wasn't on anyone's side. They were both reacting to each other, with equal (but opposite) doses of bullshit. I liked that. But then I also thought the movie was great. :P

HTBAG was released in 2013, I mean, i'm okay with some largesses when it comes to releases but 2013 is a whole 2 years prior.
― Van Horn Street, Friday, 4 March 2016 05:35 (nine years ago)
It got a US release in 2015, hence it's inclusion in a number of US-based eoy lists. According to IMDB the only proper release it had prior to 2015 was Russia in 2014.

― Laertiades (imago), Friday, 4 March 2016 11:43 (nine years ago)
xxp ^all of that
It's an outrageously bold piece of work. Every scene is crushingly upfront with the viewer and the characters are so much more knowable for it. I love how it catapults from moments of pure poignancy to manic humour. Its success in light of the way it was shot, cast, funded and distributed felt like a proper reclamation of American independent cinema from the likes of Searchlight. Those performances... Aaaaah. Love love love love this film.
― tangenttangent, Friday, 4 March 2016 11:44 (nine years ago)
I'm not really concerned with cinema purism. It's obviously a film.

Oh and while I dug Bone Tomahawk (more so the long, slow journey, less so the Cannibal Holocaust climax), I don't think it ever found a way around it's fundamentally and deeply racist premise. And in fact took several opportunities to throw salt in the wound: "Godless savages", ffs.

Just watched Gueros which was a lot like Girlhood for me in that I found it mostly admirable and even impressive, but it didn't leave any real impression on me. Palacios clearly has talent, but the meta touches were irksome.
― rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Friday, 4 March 2016 17:18 (nine years ago)
The meta bit was awesome! The whole film is so playful, I fell in love with it.
― Cherish, Friday, 4 March 2016 19:59 (nine years ago)
The second meta bit in particular bugged me, like it was aware of itself as a cliche of Mexican cinema (I'm assuming by the dialogue, anyway) and wanted to preempt criticism in a "clever" way.
― rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Friday, 4 March 2016 20:19 (nine years ago)
That assumes he thought he'd get criticism, which seems improbable. Who cares if he pays tribute to the French New Wave? Plus it's a timeless look, pre-filtered nostalgia, as if Tomás were already grown and looking back. That's the whole movie, to me: youthful resilience and brother-love.

Thought It Follows was okay. It scared me--that's easy. (Had to abandon it at night and pick up the next morning.) Some symmetrically elegant shots; if Wes Anderson made a horror film, it'd look like this. Felt cheated in the end--if there was any internal logic, which I guess I expect a little of even in a horror film, it escaped me.

Really thought I would like Diary of a Teenage Girl, and really really didn't. Somehow both too earnest and too unpleasant; it reminded me of some 90s indie film (or maybe just a bunch of 90s indie films) that I no longer remember. I don't remember the last time I wanted away from a movie character more than I did Alexander Skarsgård's here. And even though I wasn't a huge fan of Girlhood (or Gueros, for that matter) it still kind of surprises me that this is getting any praise in the same year in which those existed.

This reminded me mostly of Bamako (the trial of the Cockerel), bits of Xala and Salo (troika and negotiators and traitors by the big house in the sea with young women and erections around).
Troika is probably too raw and Gomes hasn't managed to cohere this into anything. The director's cameo and remarks were pathetic. Towards the end the doc bits turned out fine although the eloquently put testimony was surrounded by junk. Wasn't convinced for a second he wasn't trying to adapt Arabian Nights, it looked like he gave up and made up excuses. Only if he had relaxed about it.
