did anyone else watch the first episode? i went in with moderate expectations because while i liked samantha bee on the daily show, i never really thought of her as a standout colbert/carell figure. i was completely wrong. she was born for this role. the first episode surpasses much of what the daily show did, and it completely trounces the trevor noah version. a few of their gags fell a little short (although fwiw others in the room were busting a gut at the same stuff), but for the most part it was just hilarious. the focus appears to be 100% politics, which is fine with me. it relies heavily on the Show a video clip/make jokes Daily Show formula, but she's just much funnier than her competition, in a way that seems natural and unscripted. there was also a little short film about jeb bush (linked below) that started off strange and went into a completely surreal, brilliant place. also, samantha bee is kind of vulgar in a delightful way that's simultaneously raunchier and less juvenile than john oliver.
tl;dr i almost want to say that this is the new daily show you thought you'd never have again, but really i think it's better than that. oliver's show seems like it paved the way for this one.
if you have cable (or a friend's pw teehee) you can watch the first episode here: http://www.tbs.com/videos/full-frontal-with-samantha-bee/season-1/episode-1/episode-1.html
if not, most of the episode is on their youtube channel. i was going to embed these but it might not be a good idea to have 9 youtube videos above the fold on what could be a thread with hundreds of thousands of posts if there is any justice left in this terrible world, so here are the links instead:

I thought it was superb (and hilarious), but when she said something about next week at the end and I realized she wasn't doing a nightly show I felt punched in the gut.

The clips I've seen are great. Is this on Hulu or any other streaming thingy?
― Darin, Wednesday, 10 February 2016 16:40 (nine years ago)
I understand if she went to nightly she'd be obligated to pad the show with guests/performances, but I wish there was a nice in-between, where maybe it could be on 2-3 times per week instead of just once. at least during election season, when there's such a surfeit of material (it's been simply tragic that Stewart and "Colbert" the character haven't been around chronicling the lunacy of the past few months).
― evol j, Wednesday, 10 February 2016 16:44 (nine years ago)
i'm ok with it being a weekly thing if the show maintains this quality. it would be comforting to be able to check it out when i get home from work every night, the way the old daily show/colbert routine would help me erase unpleasant feelings from the rest of the day, but like (spoilers!) frodo getting on that one boat to cross that one ocean at the end of LOTR, that age has passed.
if you collected all the segments from the full frontal, daily show with trevor noah, and the nightly show with larry wilmore, and arranged them all from least funny to most funny, the samantha bee stuff would be at the very top, even with just one episode's worth of material. so impressive.
― Karl Malone, Wednesday, 10 February 2016 17:51 (nine years ago)
Yeah, otm. Watching this, I grew increasingly baffled that she wasn't approached to host TDS, but this format suits her so much better.

i gotta circle back to his show - i haven't given it much of a chance since the first month or so, and i'm sure it's a lot better now.

yeah, she would have been great with TDS but it's so nice that she doesn't have to bother with doing interviews (the worst part of TDS and colbert report).
― Karl Malone, Wednesday, 10 February 2016 17:57 (nine years ago)
Her Nerdist interview made it sound like she had no interest in taking over TDS. She and Jason had already decided they'd leave the same time Jon did, and their Tbs projects just came along at the perfect time.

Sorry, I do not feel that way about the Nightly Show. I think it is still very bad. The most tolerable/enjoyable bits are when Larry is just talking to the camera. However whenever they deviate from that...

― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 13 March 2016 13:58 (nine years ago)
"10:30," "Monday," and "TBS" are a terrible combination. They couldn't make it less likely for me to see or be able to see it if they tried.
You know what all TV channels should do? Just replay the previous night's talk shows and whatnot the next morning. People are all passing around "viral" clips anyway, everything will be just as timely/funny, there's nothing better to watch in the morning and they don't have to pay to make new content. Conan, Colbert, Kimmel, whomever, just put it on in the morning, too. Who the hell is watching TV 10:30 Monday night? (Granted, I don't know who is watching Monday morning, either, but at least more people are awake.)

this show isn't incredibly rhetorically sophisticated (by which i mean, it's very blunt and didactic), but it is smart. i like their multi-part piece on the christian right, which argues that politicized evangelism was always about racial identity, and that the support of the religious right for trump is not by any means out of historical character.

it's all jason jones to be fair, but this is something the daily show would make fun of: One P.S. 452 parent speaking out against the move is comedian and former Daily Show correspondent Jason Jones, who’s married to Samantha Bee. "To portray any opposition as classist or racist is as bad as it can get," Jones told WNYC. And elsewhere: "We are not divided,” he said at a public hearing about the proposal, “we are absolutely united in wanting what's best for our children," then encouraged fellow parents not to talk to the press about the controversy.

show has sadly become drastically uneven and still has not got past being patchy as to when it airs. when it's good it's great but the celebrity musical numbers and many of the produced bits are particularly bad. last episode's attempt to engage the acting crew seemed a bit desperate; they need to incorporate them but shuttling from talking head to talking head ain't gonna work.
― Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Tuesday, 10 October 2017 05:45 (eight years ago)
Hello! First post from a random mutt wandering by. Last week a Samantha Bee show producer spent an hour with me scoping out a story...
Speaking of patchy, that's my byline where I write about furries. Lately there's a bit of a nazi problem in that community, yes that's a word for it lately too...
There's a new book about them out yesterday from Cleis Press. And speaking of the nazi thing here's tags for it (one) (two) if you care.
The news site is a silly hobby thing, but interesting stuff has happened with it. The nazi thing is yet another push into geek groups (along with gaming, sci fi, comics) so we had some infiltrators document them from the inside, which synched with the Charlottesville nazi marching. I documented a couple of them on the scene of violence. We had them do "swatting" against a furry convention with a 5-figure security cost. And there's been more in the news like another convention getting ruined by them, I broke a story about it that Rolling Stone picked up. With all this going on I would be into stepping up the game by learning from peers in indie reporting.

Has it just done the same thing as last year and officially launched a new season then gone on a few weeks holiday? Seems to have been missing since valentine's Day which at least IMDB has as Season 3 episode 2.Is there any logic behind that. Like why call it a new season and then take a break? I thought the old season was pretty much ongoing up to that point anyway.
― Stevolende, Friday, 2 March 2018 15:53 (seven years ago)
seems like they basically run the show through most of the year (season 1 was 39 weeks total, season 2 33) with small breaks throughout. "Season" just seems to mean "year": season 1 runs from Feb. 8, 2016-Feb. 8 2017.
― President Keyes, Friday, 2 March 2018 16:31 (seven years ago)

Michelle Wolff had the right idea, don't back down, double down.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 31 May 2018 19:33 (seven years ago)
She shouldn't have apologized. WTF.
― Yerac, Thursday, 31 May 2018 19:34 (seven years ago)
I mean it goes without saying that most of the women in that administration are feckless cunts.
― Yerac, Thursday, 31 May 2018 19:35 (seven years ago)
nothing but whataboutisms all fucking day
Yup cause their collective mentality is that of a 5 yr old
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 31 May 2018 19:35 (seven years ago)
the only justification I can see for Bee apologizing is that the network threatened to cancel her show if she didn't and she didn't to screw over her entire workforce like that.
― evol j, Thursday, 31 May 2018 19:37 (seven years ago)
*didn't want to screw over
The only justification. Maybe she should've just kept it safe and went redux: Aunt Coulter.
― Yerac, Thursday, 31 May 2018 19:38 (seven years ago)
If the network threatened to cancel her show and she relented, then she's stupid, because they're just going to do it again if they don't do it anyway.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 31 May 2018 19:40 (seven years ago)
Should've gone with "feckless...wherever..."
― nashwan, Thursday, 31 May 2018 19:43 (seven years ago)
kinda wish bee had doubled down on her right to say this word or at least accompanied her apology by noting that what she said was not even in the same galaxy as roseanne's remark, but we live in a deeply fucking stupid country that elected donald fucking trump so
― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 31 May 2018 19:43 (seven years ago)
Yeah would think it was a precedent one didn't want to set if one is a satire show. JUst wondering if that devalues her doing the show. But then I'm used to the word cunt in English usage and heard it was harder in U.S. usage. But still it is true of the whole family so can a defamation charge be brought against it? Thought that was one of the hinge points.
― Stevolende, Thursday, 31 May 2018 19:44 (seven years ago)
Ivanka is complete and utter trash of course but I'm not happy that SB is just tossing a gift to the perpetually outraged right like this
― frogbs, Thursday, 31 May 2018 19:48 (seven years ago)
But who the fuck cares about them? They're perpetually outraged! You think they're going to just shut up now that they smell blood and want a body of their own?
Just wondering if that devalues her doing the show.
Yes. Because who knows what they are nixing behind the scenes. If you back down for a generic insult under pressure from the White House, what else will you back off?
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 31 May 2018 19:49 (seven years ago)
i agree, apologizing does nothing, which is why it's an idiotic move on TBS' part (I'm assuming it wasn't Bee's idea). nothing short of cancellation will appease the chuds.

I think Samantha Bee just might? I mean it's a pretty traditional comedy trope to walk back the blunt phrasing and then twist the knife back in...
I'm not reading her apology so maybe there's less room for that but idk I don't think of SB as being of weaker moral character than MW or any other comic
― YouTube_-_funy_cats.flv (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 31 May 2018 19:58 (seven years ago)
Her apology is totally weak.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 31 May 2018 20:00 (seven years ago)
I would like to sincerely apologize to Ivanka Trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night. It was inappropriate and inexcusable. I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it.— Samantha Bee (@iamsambee) May 31, 2018
What a wuss.
I like Samantha Bee a lot, but she is flat wrong to call Ivanka a cunt. Cunts are powerful, beautiful, nurturing and honest.— Sally Field (@sally_field) May 31, 2018

Yeah, way to go Sally Field, you have more balls than Bee.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 31 May 2018 20:03 (seven years ago)
At least the apology was for the use of an expletive and not the content. All these people embracing being a deplorable are all of a sudden super hyped on "civility."
― Yerac, Thursday, 31 May 2018 20:04 (seven years ago)
Civility is the new Personal Responsibility.
Look what happened to annoying Kathy Griffin, who took a hundred hits, backed down, ended up in a worse position, and then immediately regretted it, because the president and his entire family are huge pieces of shits.

I probably have said this before but the key reason why hypocrisy arguments, while completely valid, do not work is because they don't take offense to calling someone a bad word (or racist comments, or anything else), they take offense to calling someone a bad word whom they don't think deserves it.

― A is for (Aimless), Friday, 1 June 2018 18:46 (seven years ago)
So why does Bee do what she does? Just for the cash? And how mean is she allowed to be, and to whom? John Oliver (and HBO) stood up to a defamation suit for insulting an angry billionaire coal baron. Bee backed down after calling the in the public employee grifter daughter of a dickhead a bad word.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 1 June 2018 19:06 (seven years ago)
TBS barely knows what to do with Full Frontal in the first place. Last Week Tonight is one of HBO's anchor series at this point.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 June 2018 19:11 (seven years ago)
I would guess that Bee does what she does for a complex set of reasons, among which is earning a living, but only as one motive in a fairly long list. What Sally Field does these days is whatever she pleases. She has a lot less on the line than Bee, which makes it much easier for her. It's like playing with the House's money.
― A is for (Aimless), Friday, 1 June 2018 19:13 (seven years ago)
I don’t think she should have apologized but the fascist president trying to get a tv show off the air for having criticized his administration seems like the way worse part of this whole thing, regardless of the host’s net worth imo.
― Nerdstrom Poindexter, Friday, 1 June 2018 19:17 (seven years ago)
The only thing worse than a fascist president trying to get a show off the air, or stop the NFL from kneeling, or virtually anything else he wants to do, is allowing him to do it. Far more expensive and watched shows like Brooklyn Whatever and The Expanse were canceled but then picked up by others. If TBS does not have her back, like HBO has Oliver's, then she is doomed anyway and should be working on her resume.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 1 June 2018 19:22 (seven years ago)
Agreed they shouldn’t cave.
― Nerdstrom Poindexter, Friday, 1 June 2018 19:35 (seven years ago)

― Simon H., Friday, 1 June 2018 19:38 (seven years ago)
I watch Samantha Bee every week since it started. It's informative and does political/women focused pieces that no one else is doing consistently. She has a very very diverse writing staff as well. (in answer to why she does what she does). She's "mean" on the show but none of her targets in general are undeserving. News is moving so fast it's becoming impossibleto rely on any one news source or viewpoint. No one is ever going to get it 100% without messing up and it's probably bad to think they can, and I guess that's the point of all of this Trump vomit.
― Yerac, Friday, 1 June 2018 20:06 (seven years ago)
"Never apologize to a right-winger for anything" seems like a good approach at least through 2020 and probably into the indefinite future.

I thought we'd established on the other thread that the word is eqaully as offensive when applied to a woman in the UK as it it in the US.

― Yerac, Friday, 1 June 2018 23:14 (seven years ago)
The word's been discussed in three different threads today! I admit, being a man, I don't know much about woman-on-woman use of the word in either the UK or the US.
― Poisoned by Johan's pea soup. (Tom D.), Friday, 1 June 2018 23:22 (seven years ago)
If a man called me that, I would think insulting, misogynist, gross, abusive. If a woman of equal or lesser power than me called me that I would think insulting, hmmm maybe I have been a bit cunty.
― Yerac, Friday, 1 June 2018 23:27 (seven years ago)
my partner got some shit from the school recently because she posted something innocuous and friendly on their twitter, but her twitter nom is lazy cunt is what the problem was! ― calzino, Friday, 1 June 2018 23:31 (seven years ago)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but a man can get away with calling a man that word, and by and large a woman can get away with calling a woman that name. But a man can't really call a woman that word, and I'm not sure a woman would call a man that word.

folks is it wrong to support michelle wolf and want her to succeed but at the same time refuse to watch her show because her voice is like nails on a chalkboard to you

MW's stand up is strong. The pre-recorded pieces are meh. Her voice is whatever, I only cringe sometimes because I can tell that other people hate it.

I don't mind her voice, it is what it is, but there was one bit in the first episode with that other comedian where they were on a couch literally yelling at us.
I thought the Amazon Echo lunchmeat thing was hilarious.

I do like when MW puts on the Elizabeth Holmes fake voice.

The me too skit was funny in episode 2
One of my qualms with wolfs show is her segments like “cute animal videos and fails” or whatever, which feels like someone is YouTubing for me and that’s terrible. Thankfully she used that segment to tear down Roseanne instead

i find michelle wolf's voice to be weirdly compelling
also find it endearing/cool that apparently she used to be a collegiate track athlete and is really into ultramarathons?

I still watch this every week. I catch bits and pieces of The Daily Show, Colbert and Seth Myers (the monologues) from the night before or like on the weekend when I am cooking and although I like all of those there is way, way too much overlap in political jokes. Hasan Minhaj, John Oliver, Sam Bee and weekly formats are so much better for fresher political takes.
