WWDC is Monday, nobody seems to be expecting anything much. Maybe the Keynote will focus on Swift 3. OS X seems likely to get rebranded as macOS. Music on iPhone and iTunes will both change completely once again, infuriating everyone. New watch bands? Jokes about The Car? Does anyone even want a new Apple product at this point? Will Jimmy Iovine be allowed onstage?

Nervous that the next MacBook Pro is going to max out at 1TB with non-replaceable storage. They wouldn't do that to us, right? Because when this thing ships in 2017 I'm going to need more than that.

As usual, my phone is kind of fucked up just in time for the announcement and I'm just trying to make it last. Screen cracked a couple weeks ago, and it's really hard to make it charge.

My partner picked up a new 2018 model 13" MacBook Pro and I'm jealous at a level I haven't dealt with since the Wall Street iteration of the PowerBook G3 finally got it right. My 15" is a goddamn barge and I'm finding that no model of iPad is an adequate travel substitute.

I always thought the Kanga / 3500 / G3 PowerBook was the ultimate in heartbreak. I had a 5300 though, so I know the worst a PowerBook can be.

2018 seems like a good vintage of MacBooks to skip. I'm ready to order a 2019 model now, though.

I like my new MacBook Pro but am alternately cursing Apple for cutting HD space / not taking the +$400 hit and getting 1TB like my old laptop (a 2012 MacBook Pro).

Keyboard is fine but the trackpad sucks.

I honestly feel nothing for any products Apple makes these days, I’m not mad or anything it’s all just at a stable equilibrium and design differentiators are basically impossible, since all anyone wants is things built on the same lines as the products Apple introduced 2003-2007. They are still dragging their heels on a MacBook based on an Apple-designed ARM SoC and that irritates me a bit.

Speaking for myself but I can't help but imagine there are many other people like me: the thought of switching to another OS is terrifying/paralyzing. I have used Apple all my life. Used Windows XP when I was in HS but that's it. Ever since his death the company has totally stagnated and failed to invent or introduce anything truly exciting. I use Apple products but I'm not a super fan, like I couldn't care less about the watch. All of their products keep getting worse too, in different ways. But I can't switch.

I still balk at the idea of paying $1k for a friggin' phone. Also don't quite understand the difference in the X tiers

I borrowed one of the fancy new Dell Windows laptops for a week to see if I could get along with it - god, it still sucked so much. All the things I hate about OS X (notifications, handoffs) combined with an absolutely miserable trackpad.

I think I'd be fine with one of the 'pure' Android phones without any of the Samsung overlay bullshit but there's not really any enticement to switch (nor any enticement to switch to a new iPhone, tho).

When my dad died I inherited his almost new iPad, this is the device I find most useless of everything I've owned. The screen's pretty but it's awkward to type on, more awkward to play games on than a phone, uncomfortable to hold for reading books.

Total found uses: drum machine+synth apps, reading comics. For something that probably cost $900 new.

i have to use ipads for work (including keyboard covers) and they're just awkward. they need a flat surface to sit on, the keyboards aren't great at all for typing, and phones do pretty much the same thing most of the time.

ios 12 has done lots of performance stuff to improve older devices, but I'd imagine iOS 13 will spunk all that away.

Android is a non-starter for me; I should buy an SE just to keep as a backup just in case this one craps out and they refuse to repair it for love or money.

I have trouble with this too. Also I imagine there are a lot of younger people who are just growing up used to wireless and don't care enough about the improved sound from the wired connection. Today's pop music is p much designed for shitty audio anyway.

are there good sounding wireless headphones yet? my dad gave me a very shitty sounding pair of pretty generic ones. I don’t want airpods bc the wired apple phones don’t fit my ears well; I love my 30 € sennheisers wired ones with rubber tips.

I disagree with the part about not paying $900 for one. I bought an iPad Pro last year. It was a lot of money for me - it was a purchase that I considered for a long time, and so far I have zero regrets. There seems to be an endless supply of innovative music apps. It seems like every few months someone drops a new app that changes how I approach everything. The downside of this is that I feel like I am constantly in learning mode, but it has helped me get closer to what I consider to be the perfect workflow. The touch screen is perfect for music software - gets you closer to "knob twiddling" than using a mouse on a desktop. I also use it for drawing and there are some top notch apps for that as well. The biggest concern I have is that the device is going to be outdated before I feel I've fully gotten its value.

true. and the extra $$$ obviously justified by everything else the iPad can do, even if you choose not to use it. yeah, I've thought about it a lot, because a lot of friends of mine use them for music and they're super portable, powerful, and versatile. wouldn't mind getting one as a gift tbh!

I've been seeing a lot of eulogies for the SE lately. I hadn't realized it was so beloved, but it's understandable. It's the only smartphone I've ever owned, and none of the other ones currently on the market look nearly as appealing. My wife has the 8, which I find a lot less pleasant to use - the lack of a home button that actually moves when you press it and the lock button being in a less convenient place are two big drawbacks for me.

me too but, given the pattern, the problem is not how long you can keep it alive but how long apple decides (via updates) that you can't keep it alive. Even if they didn't render the SE obsolete, as such, it would still, ostensibly, be rendered obsolete by the fact that you can no longer use your favoured or most vital app. So buying a brand new SE to keep in case & for the future would just be a waste of £400, sadly.

yeah, i would still have the 3s if i wouldn't have lost it in the back of a cab on christmas day. i love the small size of the SE (and the 3s before it). the only feature of the new phones that i crave are the new cameras.

I called my carrier yesterday and they said when Apple discontinues an old model and adds a new one, they usually buy up a ton of the old ones and mark the price down even more. So I didn't get an SE yesterday, but I'm sure I will before the year's over. My 5s is still in good shape at nearly 5 years old, but...just making sure.

the problem, of course, is that iOS will continue to update, and there will be some hotshit new app that everyone has that requires the new iOS, and then installing it will make your ancient SE so slow it's almost unusable, despite claims from apple that the new OS isn't significantly slower on older phones. when i finally lost the 3s i was almost grateful because the new OS' had rendered it almost unusable.

My photos are littered with random screeenshots because of the daft relative palacement of the lock and volume up controls on the X. Which combination also happens to be how you take a screenshot on the X.

Even if you can resist the hot-shit new app, the cold-shit old apps you love tend to eventually pack up if you refuse to update to the new iOS.

iOS 12 has been great for increasing performance on older devices. I have it on an old iPhone 6 and it is a whole different experience.

Tracer, you may need to update the 1password app to the latest version. After that you should see 1password show up in the "Allow Filling From" section of Autofill Passwords in Settings.

Siri Shortcuts seems to have a lot of potential. Best One I’ve used is using the City Mapper app, I can set up shortcuts for my favorite bus stops for the next bus times. It works on my homepod too, so I can check it as I’m walking out the door and then when I get to the stop just by initiating Siri and saying something like “northbound Sheriden and Surf”.

The upgrade is good y'all, my phone is like new again.

I wonder if they realized a bunch of schmoes like me were considering abandoning iphones altogether and figured it's better to keep me in the ecosystem with an old phone than lose me altogether.

Incidentally this also fixed a major audio bug I've been having where music and podcasts stutter from time to time.

Favourite tricks so far: being able to append to the clipboard, and adding a Spotify icon to my homescreen that starts playing the song I was last listening to in whatever playlist/album it was (this is particularly good for me as I have an old phone so Spotify takes forever to launch – nice to be able to just put the phone away once I've tapped and know that it will start playing music in a while!)

Okay so...iPhone headphone splitters. (Meaning, charging the phone and using a non-Lightning headphone at the same time.) I can't seem to make head or tail out of the eight million suggestions out there; practically every product has wildly diverging reviews everywhere I look and I trust none of them. (Belkin seems to be heavily loathed, though.) Any suggestions?

xp it appears on the phone after iOS 12 update ("Measure") and you open it, point the camera at an object, move the phone side to side as it directs to calibrate, and then you align the sight on the screen with a point you want to measure, tap the button, then put another point somewhere else you want to know the distance to. It will use multiple points and you can add rectangles etc. for area measurement.

My 10” Pro is rapidly becoming my main computer. Did all the work on the site from it this morning. I think I’ve used my work Mac for about 20 minutes this week, and that was to pull together a presentation from three other decks. (iOS still sucks horrifically at multiple docs in the same app)

We've owned 3 ipads and I never found a use for them. My kids like it, which is another reason not to have it around.

otm, after that initial period of subscribing to magazines i never got around to reading there didn’t seem to be any point. maybe as they get close to being an actual macbook proxy for most people (now?) they’ll find a place for most people.

for me the clincher is not being to type on your lap without it all going everywhere. the smart keyboards are pretty solid but it’s still precarious.

I love the pro I bought last year, but I find I don’t use it as much as I’d like because I cannot use it around my 5yo.

The windows subsystem for Linux is apparently at the level of polish/completeness where you can do real coding work I have a bunch of colleagues who do that.

Also even if you prefer macs right now; the other nice thing about windows is that it’s not abandonware, unlike the Mac.

I'm with Lukas, I've grown up using Apple and can't imagine using any other OS regularly. I used Windows XP at high school and have a Chromebook now, but beyond the most basic functions, I'm completely lost and not interested in spending any more time than I have to working on a computer that isn't running an Apple OS.

well what happened to me was that i installed mojave at the exact time my c drive started failing. So i've since reinstalled mojave on the new hard drive and, it seems okay in its current iteration? ended up buying a new word suite cuz i had been using 2009 and it no longer worked. outside of that, i can't complain too much. it's a little slower than i remember macs being but aren't we all.

I would like a cheap and light 12 or 13" portable with a decent keyboard and screen and battery, on which I can write latex and read and markup (often big, with graphics) PDFs. I don't care about the OS beyond those needs. I looked at chromebooks recently but apparently running latex is still so to speak "experimental".

My 2015 MBP is still running beautifully but I don't like lugging it around. iPad pro would be great if it could run latex natively and it was easy to index and search my thousands of pdfs on it : that's the size and weight and screen and battery I'd like, and even the "smart keyboard" is fine enough.

I used macs throughout my childhood and even wrote all my college papers on like, clarisworks. It kind of screwed me up when I had to start working in corporate offices that all used windows.

MacBook Pro (13″ with Touch Bar)

screen is set to 1440×900 pt by default while the screen resolution is 2560×1600 px (1280×800 pt) — this means it’s not at 2x Retina, though this is probably due to battery life concerns

Oh shit I've had this thing for 18 months now and never even bothered to look at changing the screen resolution because I just assumed it was set to the largest value by default. I have so much more screen space now though I am old so it's kind of hard to read.

Also the amount of configuration I've done to override the stupid touchbar behavior and try to get it to behave more like the physical buttons I know and love is maddening.

imo you don't want to use native resolution, but the default scaling is a little too big

the days of really wonky scaling where things don't look quite right are mostly over as long as you pick a resolution that's the right aspect ratio, though!

I'm now reminded of my insane coworker who has a 20" 4k monitor that he runs native and sits like two inches away from the screen

My late 2007 iMac has finally died. Probably 80% of my computer use is on a MacBook Pro but I do like to have a Mac desktop around for photo editing, managing music, and streaming video via Plex. I usually don't like buying computers used but I'd like to keep the replacement well under $1000 so I've been looking at my options. 2014 Mac Minis are around $300/4GB, slower processor and $400/8GB, faster processor. Thinking of pairing one of those with a <$200 new 27 inch monitor. How bad are sub $200 monitors, considering I've been OK with a 2007 iMac screen for the last 12 years? Will a 2014 Mini run a Photoshop alternative (e.g. Affinity Photo) and process raw images reasonably well?

B&H has the new 21.5 inch 4K iMac on sale for $1100 right now but if I could get by OK for the next couple of years for half that price... I dunno.

Why not just by a good monitor for the MacBook Pro, and an external disk if storage is an issue?

Forgot to mention that the MacBook is a work computer that I don't have admin privileges for so can't install my own software.

And between me, the wife, and kids, we need more than one computer in the house anyway.

I think Ed's line of question probably leads to the right answer - just get some removable storage and a nice external monitor.

extremely bad. There is not a corollary of Moore's Law that applies to monitors.

we ran into your problem a few years back and did what you're thinking of. so we're now on our second Mac mini (the first went down hard, right on schedule after its AppleCare ran out) with a crappy monitor and we use it for device backups, uploading photos to dropbox, and managing the music library. That is literally all it does. While you could conceivably stay under $1000 for a similar package, I would advise caution (see above re: lifespan of our 2014 Mac mini).

2007 iMac screen likely better than most <200 monitors in the market. Spend a little more and get a dell ultra sharp.

a 2011 mini w SSD and maxed out RAM is an extremely credible general purpose computer fwiw. it can't install mojave but there's little else it can't do.

Do you know what failed on your Mini, Tomboto? Hard drive or something else? Higher spec 2014 Mini and a decent monitor I guess would be approaching $700 -- at which point I can see me talking myself into just getting a new iMac for $400 more. Argh...

so the weird expansion thing (MPX) is basically a way to throw the power connection for the video card along with more connection points to the bus on to the motherboard in a straight line instead of dropping more wires through the case and the card they're sourcing from AMD is using their specialty chip-to-chip bus, which isn't an apple-specific thing necessarily

no idea wtf Afterburner is, because "programmable ASIC" is general enough to mean it could do lots of things depending on what kind of basic instructions it allows. looks like their first-party video editing will be using some sort of API to interact with it, and it'll be interesting to see if they open it up

Unfortunately the IT supplier that we use seems to have a different set of priorities and hasn't sorted out a returns policy as yet. People who have affected laptops, according to the serial number checker, have reported it but have been told to keep using the laptop until arrangements have been made.

I had a 17" macbook pro (last model made) that spit out a puff of flame from its FW port one day. Apple called me and asked if I was injured (presumably to head off a lawsuit). I wasn't, but every last part of that laptop was eventually replaced.

I’ve managed to get by with a 16gb SE these past 3 years. I have a separate MP3 player so I don’t keep music on it. I transfer my photos off of it regularly and I don’t use many apps. Still I’m currently barely squeaking by.

Finally had to throw in the towel on my cracked, shitty 6s. I got an 11 and have been using a dragonfly mini amp through a lightning to USB adapter to power my headphones. It sounds great tbh, unwieldy but the improved sound is worth it. The 6s didn’t work well with the dragonfly for some reason.

microcenter has the base model ipads for $260, and i'm tempted to get one just to stream basketball games while i'm making dinner or whatever.

It’s nice for when you get a notification instead of pulling your phone out if your pocket to discover it’s a worthless message you can just glance at your watch. That and 2 year old kids love looking at pictures of themselves on it.

my iPhone SE is now randomly showing me the shutdown screen and not recognising my fingerprints. The Internet says this is probably because of a damaged 'flex cable' connected to the power button.

My wife dropped her iphone SE a week ago and since then the display has been kinda wonky but still usable. The problem is also that since then, the phone won't connect to her iCloud account (hence no iMessages) - the phone just hangs for a while before diplaying an error message. Seems very odd since I can't see how this could be linked to a physical hardware issue.

is this a good thread for asking about buying a new vs. refurbished (by apple or others) macbook ? can post this elsewhere if that’s advisable:

my 2011 macbook pro recently gave out on me and i can’t find anybody who’s willing to even attempt fixing it. so it looks like i need something new.

it looks like ebay has a number of offerings in the 400 - 800 dollar range of macbook pros 2012 -2017. lots of these sellers offer 1 year warranties. can they be trusted ?

a friend has a brand spanking new macbook. no usb ports and a confusing keyboard sort of. i don’t want that, do i ?

is there a particular year, a vintage if you will, of macbooks that is particularly reliable / desirable / durable / unfussy ?

is there a particular online RETAILER, a dependable, trustworthy purveyor of secondhand macs ?

i’m not a graphic designer, a gamer, a tech person. mostly my computer is my interface for large digital music collection, a place to actually type long form things, a way to interact with the internet, also DAW. i’m hopelessly wedded to macbook life, i doubt you could persuade me to leave the cult.

went through this recently and opted for new. MacBooks hold their value so well that I couldn’t justify used on a dollar basis, and other than saying farewell to a few apps I wasn’t using the transition has been seamless.

i was not able to get a look at the newer models before i decided, but their various goofy design/feature choices made me ultimately decide that the apparent modest performance boost some of them might have had, plus the necessarily longer support life from being introduced later in new lines, were not enough to outweigh the recent mb air i bought refurbished straight from apple's site.

and what do you know, i regularly use all three data ports at the same time that i'm drawing ac power, so, i'm happy with my choices.

i have once or twice missed the disc drive but not so much that it mattered. once i turned on my old laptop just so i could watch a movie from a dvd.

I think I'm getting mentally close to ditching my 10 year old MBP for a new model. Ars Technica review thinks new 16" MBP is overkill for casual users (such as me) but OTOH having spent so many years with a 15" screen I can't imagine being comfortable with a 13" Mac Air.

I got a “renewed” iPad Pro from amazon that was basically like new.

I can’t speak to eBay but I bought a 2013 15 inch MBP secondhand in 2016 and it’s fast and handles the newest OS just fine. I’m not a power user but Adobe Suite is still quick. I’d recommend any of the 15 inch MBPs since 2013 up until they started futzing with the keyboard. The only difference I’ve noticed is that the 2013 model can’t work as a second screen with an iPad unless you buy one of the non-apple apps

The industrial design of the 6 onward is pretty repulsive, sucked lozenges and camera warts.

The iPhone 9 (that's what I think it will be called) has been rumoured for months now. It's little more than an iPhone 8 with a spec bump. The 8 will probably only get iOS updates for another three years so Apple doesn't want to sell it much longer. The main upgrade will likely be an A13 processor - same as the current iPhone 11 series. Other than that, just minor updates, perhaps slight improvements to reception, battery life, and the camera. The nice rose gold color option is expected to be dropped. I'm guessing the high-gloss finish will be replaced by the dull glass back as on the 11 series, which will make the Apple Store staff happy. Pricing may be about $50 or £50 less than the 8 too.

I hope they don't call it the SE or SE 2; this is in no way a successor to the iPhone SE. It was nice that it was relatively cheap, but people bought it because it was small and light. I've long been hoping Apple would give us something close to SE size but with a iPhone X/11 type screen that filled the available space with only tiny bezels, but that hope has all but flickered out. At least the smallest version of the upcoming iPhone 12 is rumoured to be smaller than the 11 Pro, with a 5.4" down from 5.8". The feature set will be more like the non-Pro iPhone 11 though, but with an OLED screen and 5G. These were supposed to be launched in autumn as usual, but of course the covid-19 outbreak may cause delays or dropped features.

If you’re buying from Apple they typically give you a grace period on trade-in, or at least they did on my plan. I think most companies will — they just send you a padded box/envelope to return the old phone

Likely only on AT&T or T-Mobile (or other GSM carriers), as Consumer Cellular uses their networks, and back then iPhones sold by those carriers didn't work on CDMA-based carriers like Verizon or Sprint. Also, you'll need to have CC unlock it first, which shouldn't be a problem if you've fulfilled the original typically 2-year contract.

the process of switching from an old iPhone to a new one is pretty wild now. there's a kind of swirly circular QR code on the new phone that you line up in the camera of the old one, and then it starts transferring stuff.

black. they all have black bevels so black's the only one that looks right to me. the others look a bit like you've added a decal wrap to the back or something. actually transferring /updating is taking FOREVER.
