trading the team's most popular player in a generation for an older, demonstrably worse guy WHO PLAYS THE SAME POSITION AND IS UNDER CONTRACT FOR EIGHT MORE YEARS is the dumbest fucking thing i've ever heard

i mean at least in edmonton you can argue you needed a defenseman i guess

mookieproof, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 20:26 (nine years ago)

it's just good ol' racism rite?

How Butch, I mean (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 21:16 (nine years ago)

i assume it isn't that simple but probably due to therrien, who the habs inexplicably kept after that car wreck of a season. bad team doesn't get markedly better, doesn't build for future, doesn't maintain most popular player, all to keep that dope around

a simba man (Will M.), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 21:27 (nine years ago)

Bergevin has completely altered his team's chemistry just to appease a coach who will be fired in December. Subban will flourish in Nashville, and Montreal will regret this over the next decade, perhaps for good. I haven't been this upset with the club since Chelios was traded, coincidentally on this day 26 years ago.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 21:38 (nine years ago)

Direct result of Montreal fans insistance on having a french speaking coach, imo.

adrien otm

there are plenty of french-speaking coaches who aren't therrien; ottawa just hired one. (i dunno how much french kirk muller speaks, but i don't think it would matter.) that's no reason to trade your best skater, let alone trade him for a lesser player with a terrible contract.

and if they say a single word about 'character' . . . yesterday they gave a six-year deal to a guy who two months ago was suspended for calling a ref a 'fucking faggot', today they dealt a guy who's donating $10m to the local children's hospital

mookieproof, Thursday, 30 June 2016 00:00 (nine years ago)

I've been following hockey less and less the last couple of years, but this trade seems insane. PK was the most interesting player on this team and was incredibly popular. This team just got a lot more boring.

Maybe I should become a predators fan.

silverfish, Thursday, 30 June 2016 00:15 (nine years ago)

Guy Boucher wouldn't do with Bergevin, nor would Kirk's limited french work with the press and a subset of fans, what I'm aiming at is that this trade has not been done for hockey reasons and part of it is because of a toxic old-school culture the Habs as a franchise can't getting away from. For fuck's sakes, lots of analysts on TVA Sport and RDS are praising the trade.

My buddy and I were saying that this might be the best Team Canada we've seen in our lifetimes. They are just so unbelievably dominant out there. For some reason I still wanna cheer for team NA but gosh. Canada.

Price looked incredible, both of those goals were weird. In my mind he played shutout-worthy hockey.

a simba man (Will M.), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 14:56 (eight years ago)

the people who run USA hockey are obsessed with canada and apparently think that finishing every check is the way to beat them

there's probably no way to beat canada, because that team is amazing, but this method is not working. and nor is it helping team USA beat anyone else. 5-0 loss to finland in the 2014 bronze medal game, 3-0 loss to 'team europe' here. kessel otm

mookieproof, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 16:21 (eight years ago)

esp: "You wonder where’s Tyler Johnson, Paul Stastny or Bobby Ryan. Players who actually can move the puck through the neutral zone and get shots."

I would also add that a bunch of the young guns being put on Team NA instead of the full US team is a travesty, such as Larkin, Saad, and Gaudreau. But then again, lolTorts, Lolmbardi.

feel kinda sad for the guys from a lot of those countries given that's the closest they'll probably get in their careers to winning an international tournament... but man could they have made them look more like the hyper-generic villains in a kids' hockey movie? like they were straight up iceland in mighty ducks 2.

also JONATHAN TOEWS IS MY FAVOURITE INTERNATIONAL ICE HOCKEY BOY STILL!

a simba man (Will M.), Friday, 30 September 2016 14:22 (eight years ago)

that's the closest they'll probably get in their careers to winning an international tournament

pretty close! i mean it's been 10 years since the sweden-finland olympic final, americans took canada to overtime in the 2010 final, but that's about it.

thought the europeans played great -- nothing flashy, but more that nick lidstrom 'always in the right position' way -- but they just didn't have the offensive talent (or the four lines of all-stars) to actually beat canada

mookieproof, Friday, 30 September 2016 14:59 (eight years ago)

by "they" i mean players from slovakia, slovenia, germany, switzerland, norway etc. since there's a good chance that this team NA/team Europe thing will be a one-off. sweden & finland i feel will always have a good chance.

-_- (jim in vancouver), Monday, 3 April 2017 20:25 (eight years ago)

yeah, as much as I like watching olympic hockey, I doubt it makes a whole lot of financial sense for the NHL to go.

silverfish, Monday, 3 April 2017 20:58 (eight years ago)

I doubt theyd be back playing immediately but i suppose theyd give them that option

and a lot of the people i know actually really like boston, including me, so maybe that helps

I got to go to game 6 in Nashville this last weekend, that was the craziest atmosphere I've ever seen. Awesome fans in the arena. Of course, at the hipstery bar we went to after, a lady from Michigan spotted my Preds towel and asked me why nobody at the bar reacted when Nashville scored ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

mookieproof, Friday, 9 June 2017 01:07 (eight years ago)

it was in considerably poorer taste for your team's star player to, by all appearances, demand a penalty after smashing subban's head repeatedly into the ice, frankly

royce jung (slothroprhymes), Friday, 9 June 2017 01:45 (eight years ago)

my team's star player gave subban several cheap shots, for which he should have been (further) penalized, in a sports game. it was not an attempted lynching, or rape, or holocaust. grow the fuck up

mookieproof, Friday, 9 June 2017 04:09 (eight years ago)

mookieproof, Monday, 12 June 2017 12:53 (eight years ago)

As another (the other?) Pens fan here, gotta say I didn't feel good about that quick whistle call. BUT dems the breaks. Preds had basically two full periods of opportunities to capitalize and just couldn't find a way.

Does seem ridiculous that Toronto can call em up and blow the horn for an miscalled onside goal from 2 minutes ago (game...3? 4?) and not blow the horn on a puck that clearly wasn't in Murray's control and ended up in the net on a frankly cool and wild diving highlight real quality goal. Oh well.

andrew m., Monday, 12 June 2017 20:03 (eight years ago)

as i understand it, the argument is that when the whistle blows, people stop playing, and therefore you cannot reconstruct what would have happened had the whistle not blown. as opposed to a belated offside (or goal) review, where a correct call would have ended the play.

that argument didn't really apply to last night's nashville goal in practice and i'd totally be pissed if i were their fan, but . . . so it goes

considering the preds did not otherwise score in the final two games of the series, i don't feel like they were robbed of a title -- but then i suppose i wouldn't

mookieproof, Monday, 12 June 2017 21:01 (eight years ago)

the whistle logic is sound

ein Sexmonster (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 21 June 2017 14:45 (eight years ago)

i don't doubt that hossa has a skin condition at all, but . . . it's awfully convenient

he's already made $59m of the $63m on his contract; there's obvious incentive to put up with things when yr making $8m or $4m a year, less so for the four remaining years in which he makes $1m per

hawks can put him on long-term IR rather than suffering cap-recapture penalties if he straight-up retired
