Governors Awards to Frederick Wiseman, Jackie Chan, Anne Coates, Lynn Stalmaster. All downhill from here.

@NickPinkerton What if it turns out that the Oscar was *all* that Wiseman was working for the entire time?
― The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 6 September 2016 18:45 (nine years ago)
Well, I've read over and over the last couple weeks that Venice is now a vital part of oscar season, so I guess Lav Diaz is a frontrunner now, huh?
― Frederik B, Sunday, 11 September 2016 19:24 (nine years ago)
which one?
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 11 September 2016 19:42 (nine years ago)
Nathaniel:
To make things extra confusing Lav Diaz's four hour black-and-white Venice winner is NOT the Lav Diaz film that's one of The Philippine's finalists for their Oscar submission in 2016. The black and white Lav Diaz "movie" (he's really making miniseries, let's call them what they are!) that Philippines might submit this year is The Lullaby of the Sorrowful Mystery which is 8 hours long. (For those who'd like a comparison, last year's Golden Lion went to Desde Alla / From Afar which is Venezuela's Oscar entry this year with the Silver Lion going to Argentina's Oscar entry last year The Clan and the Grand Jury Prize to Anomalisa.)
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 11 September 2016 19:43 (nine years ago)
(he's really making miniseries, let's call them what they are!)
This is... not accurate in the slightest. His films are structured as one complete narrative and are shown mainly at film festivals, projected in auditoriums; just because they're long doesn't mean they're not movies, conceived and photographed as such (or is this person saying that once a film tips over a certain arbitrary length, it automatically becomes television?)
― Foster Twelvetrees (Ward Fowler), Monday, 12 September 2016 09:01 (nine years ago)
if you're a gay Oscar blogger yes
― The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 September 2016 10:57 (nine years ago)
I really want someone to cut From What is Before into a tv-series. The pilot episode would then be half an hour of people walking through forrests. Best pilot ever.
I also really want this discussion to continue until we hid the fifty-answer mark. So anytime anyone went to read up on the beginnings of the oscar-race, they'd read a long discussion of Lav Diaz and long-take aesthetics instead.
― Frederik B, Monday, 12 September 2016 13:04 (nine years ago)
I had a vision of Mysteries of Lisbon cut into NBC-sized slices.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 September 2016 13:07 (nine years ago)
Ruiz' The Lines of Wellington was one of those that were both film and tv-series at the same time. I honestly thought Mysteries of Lisbon was like that too, but seems I've been mistaken. It would be great on NBC, with commercial breaks!
― Frederik B, Monday, 12 September 2016 15:13 (nine years ago)
No, wait, rechecked IMDB, Mysteries of Lisbon WAS also a six part tv-series.

“It is a great and wonderful recognition of the work I have been doing for over 50 years,” (Wiseman) said. “What has kept me going is that it is fun and an adventure. Constantly working keeps me off the street, or at least on the streets that I like. I am lucky to have found work that I like and continue to be obsessed with,” he said while also thanking his family. “They recognized long ago that I am a New England Jewish Puritan and let me go my errant ways.”
Finally it was time for what Academy actors branch Governor Tom Hanks called “the man who puts the Chan in Chantastic.” Hanks noted that the two genres Jackie Chan works in – martial arts and action comedies – have been historically under-represented at the Oscars, “but that will change if I have any pull on the Board of Governors.” He described Chan’s work as a mix between John Wayne and Buster Keaton. “How is this possible out of one man?”
And the man himself could not have been more excited on stage last night in his acceptance. “I still can’t believe I am standing here. It’s a dream. A long time ago when I watched the Oscars with my Dad, he said ‘Son, you get so many movie awards around the world. When are you going to get one of these?’ Finally (Academy President) Cheryl calls. I said ‘are you sure?.’ After 56 years in the film industry, making more than 200 films, after so many bones, finally this is mine.” Among fellow action stars in the room rooting him on were Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone.

if Huppert is passed over for 5 that include Streep in Florence Foster Screechy, i would propose flooding the Kodak Theater with raw sewage.
― Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 4 January 2017 20:39 (nine years ago)
Lately they've been reasonably successful getting one (and only one) Huppert-like candidate in best actress. I'd save the concern for Bening or Negga maybe.

Only just caught up with Hansen-Løve's Things to Come (I thought Eden was terrible, so had avoided it up to now). Anyway, excellent movie and Huppert is, again, superb in it - love the moments of comedy, especially with the fat black cat, that undermine both the character and Huppert's high seriousness. Would be great to see her take on a fully comic role (has she ever done this before?)

As usual, a few things I'm looking forward to (Arrival, Manchester by the Sea, Moonlight) and a bunch more that I have zero interest in ever watching.
The biggest surprise, for me, glancing at the list is that the love for the mediocre Hell or High Water lasted all the way to Oscar season.

the critics are raving about HACKSAW RIDGE!!!
Rex Reed of Observer rated the film with four stars and called it "the best war film since Saving Private Ryan. It is violent, harrowing, heartbreaking and unforgettable."
Michael Smith of Tulsa World called Hacksaw Ridge a "moving character study" and praised both the direction and acting. He observed: "It’s truly remarkable how Gibson can film scenes of such heartfelt emotion with such sweet subtlety as easily as he stages some of the most vicious, visual scenes of violence that you will ever see. ... Hacksaw Ridge is beautiful and brutal, and that’s a potent combination for a movie about a man determined to serve his country, as well as his soul."
IGN critic Alex Welch gave the film a score of 8/10, and praising it as "one of the most successful war films of recent memory" and "at times horrifying, inspiring, and heart-wrenching."
Mike Ryan of Uproxx gave the film a positive review, praising Gibson's direction, and saying: "There are two moments during the second half of Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge when I literally jumped out of my seat in terror. The film's depiction of war is the best I’ve seen since Saving Private Ryan."
Peter Travers of Rolling Stone gave the film 3.5 stars and praised it as "the best war film since Saving Private Ryan and wrote: "Thanks to some of the greatest battle scenes ever filmed, Gibson once again shows his staggering gifts as a filmmaker, able to juxtapose savagery with aching tenderness." He added: "[I]t is violent, harrowing, heartbreaking and unforgettable. And yes, it was directed by Mel Gibson. He deserves a medal, too."
Matt Zoller Seitz for RogerEbert.com gave 2.5 stars out of 4 and described it as "inept and beautiful, stupid and amazing."
― nomar, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 17:24 (eight years ago)
The first half of Hacksaw – about all I could stand before sticking the screener in my blender – was so awful that I can't imagine I care about "realistic" battles.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 17:25 (eight years ago)

Glad to see Michael Shannon get a nom for Nocturnal Animals which I just saw last night and really enjoyed. Also watched Manchester which was ok but it is not nearly as good as that guy's other two films; it's miles worse than Margaret. Moonlight is far and away the best film out of the bunch. Beckinsale def. got robbed, that was maybe my second favorite film of the year. Also saw hidden figures this week; I see the value in a movie like that but could it have been more hackneyed and disneyfied? Why insert a white saviour into that movie? for fuck's sake there is a scene where they dance in the kitchen.
― akm, Saturday, 4 February 2017 18:02 (eight years ago)
It's 2017 and there are still more people who dance in their kitchens than their are black female scientists working at NASA. Hidden Figures is the movie America needs right now.
― insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Saturday, 4 February 2017 18:37 (eight years ago)
I may have to walk away from the thread because akm admitted to liking Nocturnal Animals.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 4 February 2017 18:56 (eight years ago)
I like pretentious films!
My issue withHodden Figures is really more that it portrays probably more progress than really exists. If there still aren't many black women working at NASA, NASA is partly to blame; yet NASA certainly seems to be patting itself on the back on this. I understand artistic liberties but to have the white guy come in and save everyone when this never happened is disappointing. The performances are all very good though.
― akm, Saturday, 4 February 2017 19:16 (eight years ago)
I thought Nocturnal Animals stupider than Hidden Figures.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 4 February 2017 19:17 (eight years ago)
I left Hidden Figures and felt nothing except satisfaction that a movie with these actresses and this plot would become a box office hit; I turned off Nocturnal Animals devastated by the offal that fashion designers pass off as art.

Anyway I watched Fences last night and this movie is getting overlooked, holy shit; Denzel and Viola should both win for their categories. I think Moonlight is a better film and should win best picture, but this is my close second favorite of the year (Arrival would be third I guess).

Denzel has a legitimate shot too.
― insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Sunday, 5 February 2017 18:02 (eight years ago)
ftr Fences was a fine, often stilted adaptation of a good American play and I've got nothing against Davis or Washington-the-actor (the problems are with Washington-the-direction). I wish Jovan Adepo and Stephen Henderson had received the attention that Davis has gotte.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 5 February 2017 18:05 (eight years ago)
I have no issues with the direction. it is stagey, and the movie doesn't move much beyond "a visual representation of a stage play" but it worked for me.

A skit they played at the Academy luncheon of Kate McKinnon playing a starlet from the '30s demonstrating how not to give an acceptance speech. Probably only funny to dedicated Oscar nuts, but anyone in old movie drag shouting "fuck" gets a laugh from me.

I've only seen one of the five performances, so I don't know who they leave out, but Rebecca Hall should have been nominated for Christine.
― clemenza, Thursday, 9 February 2017 00:35 (eight years ago)
And Cynthia Nixon should win for A Quiet Passion, but there's a bunch of complications with that.
― Frederik B, Thursday, 9 February 2017 00:51 (eight years ago)
I've no idea why they would have deleted that Kate McK skit?
― Heavy Doors (jed_), Thursday, 9 February 2017 01:26 (eight years ago)
One complication is that she's not nominated.
And another complication that she probably wasn't eligible, as the film will only be released in the US this april. Still. Should have won.

Time for the Hollywood Reporter's anonymous Oscar voter.
* "I hated the German movie [Toni Erdmann] so much because it was so shticky — Germans are not funny! The only part of the whole movie where I laughed was when she couldn't get out of her tight dress and just ripped it off and went around naked. I hear Jack Nicholson is going to be in a remake, and he might make it funny."
* "[Elle's] Isabelle Huppert is an ice-cold actress, and I eliminated her because when you get attacked, beaten and raped, you're not the same person afterward, but she was, and I wanted to slap her to try to get a reaction out of her."
* "I hated Arrival — it just sucked. I didn't like Fences because they just filmed the play — I wanted to see the guy go into the jazz club and play his music, the girl who's having his baby, his kid on the football field. But I think Denzel [Washington, its producer/director/star] decided that every word of the script [by the late August Wilson] was so precious that he wasn't going to "mess" with it, and the movie suffered as a result."
* "I'm ruling out O.J. [Made in America] even though I still have an hour of it left to watch — maybe for younger people this is new stuff, but for me it's just reliving a part of the past I don't need to relive. I was disappointed with I Am Not Your Negro — I was really looking forward to learning more about James Baldwin's life, rather than his ideas (which I already knew), because when I first came to New York as a young actress, he was such an avant-garde playwright and fascinating guy."

OJ doc is well researched, they provide a lot of detail beyond the basic story, (ie the coverage of his childhood and college years is really interesting) and you get a lot more context when they get to the stuff most people know. And they talked to a LOT of people, so it's not just weirdo outsiders or professional commentators

there are always TWO cards. A blog comment w/ very plausible theory:
I think they use a 2 envelope system - each award has 2 envelopes, one given to the presenter, and one held backstage by the CPAs. The one backstage is the only other written proof of the winner, and they open it to confirm the result. The mistake, I assume, is that Beatty was handed the 2nd Emma Stone envelope. The only other explanation, which seems unlikely, is that the BP envelope had the wrong card in it. Regardless, what a fuck up. No way Price Waterhouse will retain this gig.

Anyhow... yet another Oscars that went on way too long. They've got to cut stuff and get it to around 3 hours if they want it to be enjoyable. My annual advice: they should cut some awards (say editing, sound x2, makeup, production design), have the main host present some awards to cut out presenter introductions, and make the non-award bits shorter. That hour in the middle with the awards no one cares about and sting and john legend was unbearable.
All of the clips of previous Oscars should have been cut. The "stars with their favorite old stars" was lame, but at least it had a punchline. Good job on skipping the interpretive dance this year.

In hindsight, the smart thing would have been to call someone over from the side of the stage to check the card, but I have no idea how I would react in that situation with the camera on me. Maybe the problem with all of the double-briefcase precautions is that the presenters aren't braced for the possibility of something going wrong.

seems the idea of Moonlight being forever linked with LLL is leaving a funny taste. the post-Oscars Vanity Fair cover, unlike in previous years has a picture of the 2 directors from the 2 films instead of just the one who directed the winner.

― Heavy Doors (jed_), Thursday, 2 March 2017 01:00 (eight years ago)
I don't care deeply about Moonlight--I liked it--but I agree with the tweet that having to share the cover with La La Land is unwarranted.
― clemenza, Thursday, 2 March 2017 01:07 (eight years ago)
as someone else noted the cover traditionally goes to the directing winner so technically it's LLL that's "sharing" in that case
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 2 March 2017 01:11 (eight years ago)
That is not what happened. Variety traditionally puts the Best Director winner (in this case, Damien Chazelle) on the morning after cover. Due to the unique and historical circumstances around Moonlight's win (not the flub, just the importance of the movie winning Best Pic I think) they asked Chazelle and Jenkins to do a joint cover. Jenkins himself on Twitter:
https://twitter.com/BandryBarry/status/837045876602241026
@shaehag @Variety There just is absolutely no controversy here. Had La La Land won pic and me director I would have the cover.
People reacting to a very cool/historical and I think good choice to honor Jenkins as well as Chazelle by literally inventing fake news outrage.

I didn't love Moonlight but let's be clear: this is the first outright queer film to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. This is a big deal. And a black queer film! I don't expect BP winners to be as pretty good and sometimes excellent as Moonlight often is.

― akm, Thursday, 2 March 2017 01:38 (eight years ago)
― Supercreditor (Dr Morbius),
Covert not overt. As a film crit colleague wrote today Moonlight is explicitly about a gay character coming of age. Voight is clearly the star of MC, and even though Ratso is clearly coded as gay, Joe Buck's place on the Kinsey scale is more ambiguous.

With a modified card, even if the presenters had gotten the wrong one, none of this would have happened because the presenters would’ve looked at it and one of two things would’ve happened: Their eyes would’ve read “Best Actress” or “Emma Stone.” Reading either of those would indicate that this wasn’t the card for Best Picture, and they would’ve asked Jimmy Kimmel or a producer to the stage to get it corrected. The card needed to be written and designed in a way that makes it clear to the reader only the essential information.
