I've only seen about 5 2016 movies in 2016, but Victoria was one of them and it was excellent.

I hear from this arsehole again, he's going in the river (James Morrison), Tuesday, 29 November 2016 00:45 (eight years ago)

Victoria is from early 2015 ;) But yeah, it's good. The photographer behind that insane shot, Sturla Brandth Grøvlen, is Norwegian, educated in Copenhagen, and has already done Icelandic prizewinners Rams and Heartstone and Danish horror film Shelley. Every one of them looks absolutely gorgeous.

i look forward to losing track of this thread within a week and having it as a current bookmark until the end of time

qualx, Tuesday, 29 November 2016 02:03 (eight years ago)

Rams and Victoria (2016 UK release) were both pretty great. I went into Victoria expecting it to treat its lead poorly, and it kind of did, but I found it gripping and impressive despite that. My friend said of it that she couldn't believe Victoria was literally incapable of defying the what the men told her to do.

I'm about to start filling in the gaps of everything I've missed. Is there anything people have in mind as maybe being overlooked by most from this year? I'd recommend Papusza if you missed it. A slow-burning biopic about the famous gypsy poet, but it's stayed with me longer than a lot of films this year.

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 29 November 2016 11:55 (eight years ago)

A Quiet Passion is the biggest surprise, and probably best film of the year. So that, one, I guess, but I don't know if it's out in the UK.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 29 November 2016 12:23 (eight years ago)

Looks like it was released here at LFF, but doesn't seem to have surfaced in cinemas yet. Sounds exciting though, I'll definitely keep an eye out for it.

Good on him for making a not-bad "restrained" late-career movie though - those are usually much more dismal propositions. And I'm hoping Huppert delivers her accpetance speech in character if she (deservedly) takes Best Actress.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 November 2016 18:39 (eight years ago)

I don't think anything will top Green Room for me this year, but only because I've been longing for a great punk movie since Ex-Drummer (or even Hard Core Logo).

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 November 2016 18:47 (eight years ago)

the idea of Huppert getting any awards traction is so bizarre and thrilling that I'd rather think some more about a Trump presidency to sober me.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 November 2016 18:49 (eight years ago)

I count 15 new movies I've seen this year. Moonlight, Embrace of the Serpent, and Green Room probably the highlights. Zootopia was the only blockbuster I really liked.

Also, I just realized that I forgot to PVR Roar when TCM aired it recently. Expecting far more of an intriguing novelty than an actual good film anyway.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 2 December 2016 02:42 (eight years ago)

http://reverseshot.org/reviews/entry/2285/jackie

(Portman) is, I hasten to add, singularly awful, though by virtue of the fact that the actress is attempting an impersonation of a dead celebrity with a highly recognizable speech pattern, she will automatically be catapulted into the awards season frontrunner shortlists, because of a popular tendency to confuse party-trick mimicry with great acting. Portman doesn’t bear much of a physical resemblance to the First Lady, but the technical aspects of her impression are more or less on the money—she gets the unusual cadences of Jackie’s speech, and most of her peculiar combination of boarding school elocution and mishmash mid-Atlantic phrasing, though speaking through her scrim of muzzy breathiness she sometimes strays closer to the pouty baby voice of Marilyn Monroe.

Ballistic: ILX vs. Sever (Eric H.), Friday, 2 December 2016 19:24 (eight years ago)

That Sight & Sound list is on the whole pretty pleasing and much stronger than last year's (from what I can tell at this stage). Agree that O.J can't really be considered a film though. I've nothing against TV, just so surprised to see it showing up on these lists. Apologies if I missed a whole debate.

Also I can't pretend I'm not nervous about Elle. No idea how those components can be grouped into something laudable, but everyone seems to like it so I'll try to reserve most of my judgement until I've actually seen it. These UK release dates are the worst.

What are your problems with LLL, Eric? I liked it well enough but it proved vaporous. I don't remember the songs or the moves – I remember Stone and Gosling singing and dancing.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 5 December 2016 17:26 (eight years ago)

Lacking in charm and talent, which wouldn't be in itself a problem if the movie's entire thesis weren't that charm and talent will naturally find their reward in Hollywood.

Ballistic: ILX vs. Sever (Eric H.), Monday, 5 December 2016 17:33 (eight years ago)

I'm not among those offended by Gosling's co-opting of jazz culture/traditions, but damn is the movie condescending toward Stone's resistance.

I will say that this looks like a slightly better-than-average awards season run, if only because La La Land looks like the only thing I'm dead set against seeing. Assuming the Jackie O biopic has been declared DOA, that is.

It's that bad? Because I kinda like Larrain, and had hoped for something as good as El Club :(

Frederik B, Monday, 5 December 2016 18:27 (eight years ago)

I disliked The Club's last third intensely. Neruda was an admirable attempt to avoid biopic conventions, but it beached itself on voice-over.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 5 December 2016 18:30 (eight years ago)

Manchester by the Sea was really remarkable. Can't remember the last time a movie ended with the main character ended up in the same place emotionally. All the promo made it look like one of these "broken man learns to live again through the opportunity to be a parental figure" redemption stories, but Affleck's character remains just as broken at the end of the movie. It really earns its 137 minutes.

With nothing else to do on NYD I saw Fences, Lion and Manchester by the Sea in one sitting. I must say that Lion was better than expected, only went for the cheap seats in the last couple of minutes. (Didn't know it came from the co-director of Top of the Lake; a ton of other folks would have made it intolerable.)

One of the highlights from the evening was Best Actor winner Casey Affleck’s speech, in which he read aloud some of the harshest words ever written about him by New York Magazine critic David Edelstein, also the chairman of the NYFCC and the evening’s host.

“Affleck, though likable, doesn’t have a lot of variety and resorts to chewing gum to give his character through-lines,” the actor said, quoting Edelstein’s review of the heist movie “Triple 9.” “Affleck’s line readings would be too mumbly and mulish even for the glory days of ’50s Method momma’s boys and he might as well be wearing a T-shirt that says ‘Shoot Me.’ Fortunately, he’s not the lead… It’s looking like whenever you see Casey Affleck in a movie’s credits, you can expect a standard, genre B picture — slowed down and tarted up…Mr. Affleck mutters incoherently in a voice pitched too low for even a dog to hear.”

ILXorcist 2: The Heretic (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 January 2017 16:41 (eight years ago)

the more I am asked to acknowledge the "tragedy" of a self-centered alcoholic who is offered an opportunity to be of genuine service to others, and instead opts to go back to his self-imposed sty of self pity, the less inclined I am to see it as tragedy, and more inclined I am to see it as defensive indulgence. So there. Also, there's the way the film neatly sidesteps issues of both moral and legal responsibility, the better to let the viewer experience all that emotion. My friend A.O. Scott raised some eyebrows in his Times review when he said it would be a mistake to deny that the movie had a racial dimension but it certainly does. I myself was reminded of the Lou Whitney song "Thirty Days in the Workhouse," the chorus of which goes "I got thirty days in the workhouse/now don't you shed no tears/'cause if I'd been a black man/they'd have given me thirty years." As Jerry Lee Lewis likes to say, think about it.

The National Society of Film Critics picks Moonlight for Best Picture:

In the acting categories, “Manchester by the Sea” star Casey Affleck took the award for best actor, while Isabelle Huppert won the actress prize for her performances in both “Elle” and “Things to Come.” Affleck’s “Manchester” co-star Michelle Williams scored the prize for supporting actress, and “Moonlight” standout Mahershala Ali nabbed the award for supporting actor.

“Manchester” also won the best screenplay award. “Moonlight” continued its run by winning cinematography for James Laxton and director for Barry Jenkins.

The foreign film prize went to “Toni Erdmann” — the film’s lead actress Sandra Huller was a runner up in her category. “O.J.: Made in America” won in the nonfiction category.

Moonlight is being absurdly overrated, and people come out with pitchforks if you slight the it at all. Certain Women got ignored and imo it's a better & subtler take on the same themes explored in Moonlight, with the same triptych structure. Moonlight just checks every socially conscious box imaginable, and while I liked the film, the hysteria over it seems disingenuous and makes me queasy.

My critics group had more than a couple of skeptics, and I've seen no pitchforks tbh. It's a solid movie with occasionally lovely patches. I didn't accept Chiron's third act transformation into a 50 Cent clone as played by Ennis Del Mar, though. And take it from me: Moonlight doesn't get much out of the South Florida location shooting as the reviews have led you to believe.

Awards contenders “Silence,” “Jackie,” “Sully,” “Loving,” “Captain Fantastic,” “Nocturnal Animals,” “20th Century Women” and “Florence Foster Jenkins” were overlooked

What I wouldn't give for Jackie to miss out.

Are we going to have a poll this year? I've been watching everything I can get my hands on...

Yeah, I've got a busy week ahead but maybe I'll get the thread going in the next day or two.

Walter Chaw's 2016 wrap-up is several zillion times more interesting than all these year-end awards:

I want to say, too, that the best films of 2016 are split evenly between grief and reflection, and raging against the dying of the light. Hindsight being what it is, a Trump presidency and the global rise of fascism aren't surprising. The roots of our hopelessness are in these films. The seeds are there too, though, of the shape that rebellion will take in the next four years. Our horror genre is in the midst of a golden age. It's about to be extraordinary. Anyway, Paul Feig's Ghostbusters is Hillary. David Ayer's Suicide Squad is Trump. One is disappointing and groundbreaking in the safest possible way (and why aren't there any Asian people in a movie whose heroes work above a Chinese restaurant?); the other is a hate crime people came out in droves to witness. Outrage is selective, see? Welcome to the brave new world.

Worst De Palma Critic: De Palma
Take it from a staunch Brian De Palma addict: Brian De Palma is the person you least want to hear talk about le cinéma de Palma. Sitting awkwardly before a fireplace mantle in Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow’s talking-head doc, the now enormous De Palma holds court, going through his films chronologically, one by one, relating some terrific anecdotes, and overall being a surprisingly genial guide. The result is an aesthetically impoverished documentary about a great visual thinker—a disconnect hard to get over—but more detrimentally, his perspective on his own work’s merits is mostly tied to financial success (as is the case with many American filmmakers, including Spielberg). Thus, De Palma reiterates that his greatest accomplishments are benchmarks Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Scarface, The Untouchables, and Mission: Impossible, while such relative box-office disappointments as The Fury, Raising Cain, and Femme Fatale get short shrift—especially the latter, which barely rates any screen time even though any true De Palma fan knows it’s a career-defining masterwork. There’s a purity of vision and concept to Baumbach and Paltrow’s approach for sure: wind up the man and let him talk. But if there’s any filmmaker whose work is worthy of a more dialectical approach it’s De Palma, one of our most hotly debated, divisive directors. Like any artist, his work benefits from considered, serious criticism. (If you really care about De Palma, read Chris Dumas’s brilliant recent book Un-American Psycho, an engaging and endlessly revealing political and aesthetic study.) De Palma provides us with a rare home visit with an elusive figure, but its anti-critical approach left me thirsty. —MK

The Paul Giamatti Award for Overacting: Natalie Portman in Jackie

In the voice of South Park’s Cartman mixed with a Marilyn Monroe-impersonating drag queen:
“Misteh Valenti . . . would you mahnd getting a message to ool aww funeral guests when they lehnd? Infoohm them that I will whoa-wuk with Jack tomorrow . . . Alone if necessary. And tell General de Gawul that if he wishes to rahd in an uh-merd cahhr—or in a tank, fuh that mattuh—I won’t blame him. And I’m shoo-uh the tens of millions of people oowahhtching won’t eye-thuh.” —MK
