Excellent thread title--better than the film.

Thanks for doing this again!
― Cherish, Monday, 16 January 2017 17:35 (eight years ago)
Hail Caesar would make a killer Catholic double header with The Silence.
― Gukbe, Monday, 16 January 2017 17:58 (eight years ago)
Favorite time of the year! Thanks for doing this once again Gukbe.
Cool year, but perhaps without any gigantic masterpieces. Did everyone get to see A Quiet Passion?
― Frederik B, Monday, 16 January 2017 22:21 (eight years ago)
Never opened here.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 16 January 2017 23:08 (eight years ago)
There was one gigantic masterpiece, Arabian Nights, but it already placed last year. Still voting for it this time.
And we're going to see both New Lonergan and Toni Erdmann before voting, so that could change things
― illbient microtonal poetry Surbiton (imago), Monday, 16 January 2017 23:17 (eight years ago)
Saw new Lonergan today. It's fine but mostly made me think about how much I hate oscar-season... Toni Erdmann should place very highly, hopefully.
I'm hoping to see A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery and Sieranevada before voting ends. That's probably the ones I expect the most out of. And get a rewatch of Scarred Hearts might move it up a couple places. Great, great film.
― Frederik B, Monday, 16 January 2017 23:30 (eight years ago)
Probably will vote for "Certain Women" but I haven't seen "Elle" yet...
― Everything Moves Towards The Sun (Ross), Monday, 16 January 2017 23:37 (eight years ago)
I've got about five movies I can actually see in the time left to catch up on. No chance for Right Now, Wrong Then, it seems.
― Gukbe, Tuesday, 17 January 2017 01:27 (eight years ago)
I'm going to rewatch Right Now, Wrong Then and 20th Century Women, both of which six weeks seemed determinedly OK. Toni Erdmann too.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 17 January 2017 01:46 (eight years ago)
Right Now, Wrong Then has some of the best Hong scenes, but it felt much more sad than it should be to me, I think. I mostly admire how he steadfastly creates the same film over and over and over, but at certain points here it felt really sad and desperate. That was quite probably mostly me, but still.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 17 January 2017 01:49 (eight years ago)
Is it actually available anywhere?
― Gukbe, Tuesday, 17 January 2017 01:51 (eight years ago)
Well... you know... it's available 'places'. You know... those places... I did see one of the few cinema screenings it got here, though. But yeah, it's available.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 17 January 2017 01:54 (eight years ago)
The thing with the Hong film is...you have to like the movie he shows the first time.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 17 January 2017 01:56 (eight years ago)
Oh! Before I forget (again), please do not number ballots when submitted. Top film is 1st, then 2nd, 3rd, etc...

― xyzzzz__, Thursday, 19 January 2017 06:10 (eight years ago)
That aside a few notes on what has taken place on this thread so far:
- Thank you Gukbe for doing this.- No one apart from Frederik has surely seen A Quiet Passion.- No one apart from LJ thinks Arabian Nights is a 'gigantic masterpiece' (Trump-like hyperbole there).
Ballot:
- I'll get to watch Toni Erdmann and Cameraperson before I get to cast my vote. - I'll try and source a copy of Cemetery of Splendour between now and then - never got around to it.- I'll put Manoel de Oliveira's Visit or Memories and Confessions very high-up on my list - but it got one screening here that I know of and saw nothing on the review front. But please vote if you have (and loved it, and if you haven't what's wrong with you) and hopefully we'll get it in at the bottom end of the countdown.
― xyzzzz__, Thursday, 19 January 2017 06:25 (eight years ago)
No one apart from LJ thinks Arabian Nights is a 'gigantic masterpiece' (Trump-like hyperbole there).
These films, by design, were the v definition of 'curate's eggs'. But yes, even 'minor masterpiece' would be on the generous side.
― Bongo Herbert (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 19 January 2017 09:50 (eight years ago)
I think Arabian Nights is a masterpiece. Think it was top 3 on my ballot last year.
And I know I'm not the only one to have seen A Quiet Passion. Also, isn't there a uk-faction that will root for it?
― Frederik B, Thursday, 19 January 2017 10:36 (eight years ago)
Hasn't opened in the UK yet.

― wins, Thursday, 19 January 2017 10:56 (eight years ago)
Cemetery of Splendour is on US Netflix so it must be relatively easy to source. Aradian Nights as well, for that matter.
― Gukbe, Thursday, 19 January 2017 11:07 (eight years ago)
Also available on DVD/Blu-Ray in the UK, and can be rented from Amazon Love Film.

Hey, sorry I don't keep myself perfectly updated on British release dates, the film had it's world premiere in February.
― Frederik B, Thursday, 19 January 2017 13:32 (eight years ago)
I loved Arabian Nights btw, might vote for it again
― wins, Thursday, 19 January 2017 13:33 (eight years ago)
Voted
― Bongo Herbert (Ward Fowler), Monday, 23 January 2017 12:44 (eight years ago)
I could also consider re-voting for Arabian Nights, btw, but iirc we two were the only votes it got, wins, so I guess if it's us to again Gukbe might disqualify it :)
― Frederik B, Monday, 23 January 2017 13:35 (eight years ago)
I saw Arabian Nights in Feb 2016, slightly in advance of its UK cinema release, so I think it absolutely qualifies for this poll.
I couldn't vote for it in the end - it was just too much and yet not enough.
― Bongo Herbert (Ward Fowler), Monday, 23 January 2017 17:38 (eight years ago)
heh I checked my ballot for last year and it turns out I didn't vote for it so I guess I saw it around March time? So hard to keep track... Had I seen it in time I def would have voted it in the 2015 poll and it would have done a bit better, doesn't sound like its chances of getting in this year are great but I'll prob vote for it idk
― wins, Monday, 23 January 2017 18:24 (eight years ago)
I won't disqualify anything.
― Gukbe, Monday, 23 January 2017 18:25 (eight years ago)

― Gukbe, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 03:23 (eight years ago)
Just watched Panique au village: La Rentrée des classes (A Town Called Panic: Back to School) - only 26 minutes this time but every bit as hilarious and brilliant as the 2009 film :) Belgium's answer to Aardman do it again

Will Puiu's Sieranevada get anglo-saxon release in 2017, or has it already been released? Because I saw it last saturday, it's masterful, and in top three of the year, or thereabout.

― pointless rock guitar (Michael B), Monday, 30 January 2017 16:34 (eight years ago)
I am seeing at the weekend (probably).
Anyone voting for Camaraperson? This is probably going to be top 5 for me. Incredible, a fairly singular achievement.
― xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 20:45 (eight years ago)

― insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 31 January 2017 20:49 (eight years ago)
yes
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 31 January 2017 20:50 (eight years ago)
I don't know when/if Sieranevada will get a UK cinema release (I'm assuming there will be a physical media/streaming version available at some point; Second Run in the UK have just released a home viewing version of Puiu's first film, Stuff and Dough, which I very much want to see.) Have you seen Aurora, Fred B? I have it on a pile of discs somewhere, yet to be watched.
Also hoping to see Toni Erdmann at the weekend, but if I love it, I will be voting for it in next year's poll, not this one.
― Bongo Herbert (Ward Fowler), Tuesday, 31 January 2017 21:05 (eight years ago)

Cameraperson has one showing here, this Saturday. I was thinking of going up to London for the march but can see myself skipping it & heading to cinema instead. Similarly I might blow off my 1st meeting of the year w case worker for my one chance to see fire at sea
― wins, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 22:39 (eight years ago)
we'll definitely try to catch that, along with MBTS and Toni Erdmann. anything else you'd nudge our way?
― I Am In Atlanta And Thug Is Young (imago), Tuesday, 31 January 2017 22:50 (eight years ago)
Aurora is very good as well. I had it in a dvd-pile as well, then watched it when I realized I had a chance to see Sieranevada. Also Stuff and Dough. Apparently Death of Mr Lazarescu, Aurora and Sieranevada is first half of a six-part series of tales from Bucharest. They really fit well together, and he has turned his film language into something really unique.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 22:57 (eight years ago)
Did everyone get to see American Honey? I love Andrea Arnold and think it's her best.
― Cherish, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 00:27 (eight years ago)
v simply, Being 17 isnt on DVD til March, so i can't vote
tying this dogmatically to the Oscar date makes no sense to me.
― Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 1 February 2017 01:49 (eight years ago)
It's less about the Oscar date (though, why not) than it is about getting it done by the beginning of March. Oscar sort of works because a lot of films will get released in some form (whether the prestige pictures i.e. Silence or the art films on home media) by February, giving people a month to catch up. It's not perfect, nor could it ever be, but running it much further into the next year seems silly. I, myself, would prefer to move on by the third month.
And if you think it's unfair, try living somewhere other than New York or LA (and even then...)
― Gukbe, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 03:01 (eight years ago)
Voted, about 15-20 films released last year with a few older films that had a re-screen.
Just couldn't face padding out with nice but forgettable. Or I dunno, anime. Watching Brook's King Lear was such an unforgettable afternoon.

Doing a "five years later" poll later in the year isn't such a bad idea, actually. Would be especially interesting if we have a contemporary poll to compare it to, mind.
I'm willing to extend a week if there is interest. I don't really mind when it's done, as I finally finished my ballot last week and have happily moved on to 2017 films or, more accurately, watching older movies until November when I'll frantically catch up on 2017.

― Frederik B, Thursday, 2 March 2017 09:41 (eight years ago)
When you said that doing a list was a piece of piss...
― Bernie Lugg (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 2 March 2017 10:46 (eight years ago)
I did put World Series Game 7 and Woody's Crisis in Six Scenes at the top of my Eric ballot.
― Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 2 March 2017 11:53 (eight years ago)
Huh, haven't watched one movie since the Oscars.
Voted anyway.
― Cherish, Friday, 3 March 2017 19:06 (eight years ago)
The Birth of a Nation probably won't make my ballot...
I'm seeing anime Your Name on monday, aka first potential best film of 2017.

― Gukbe, Monday, 6 March 2017 11:19 (eight years ago)

― intheblanks, Monday, 6 March 2017 14:31 (eight years ago)
You can still submit a ballot until 6pm est
― Gukbe, Monday, 6 March 2017 16:06 (eight years ago)
awesome, just sent my ballot in
― intheblanks, Monday, 6 March 2017 18:20 (eight years ago)
Okay, ballots have been counted and tabulated. Because of work etc I'll do some tomorrow night and Wednesday night (or late afternoon, early evening for the US and a bit later on for those across the pond), and I'll do the top 20 at a more reasonable time on Thursday as I'm off that day. 26 ballots in total, which is one more than last year, so thanks everybody!
― Gukbe, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 01:26 (eight years ago)
Yay!
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 09:05 (eight years ago)
I ended up being busy all weekend with a family medical emergency but cobbled together a ballot just before going to bed on deadline day, pretty sure I missed something off. Seeing certain women, cameraperson and american honey later this week
― wins, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 11:10 (eight years ago)
hope everything's ok wins

Yeah it's fine, granny was hospitalised with signs of heart failure - not great but she's going strong for 87. I stayed with her over the weekend after she was discharged just in case, did end up watching a few films but wasn't gonna try and convince her to sit thru the assassin or I am the pretty thing that lives in the house so I could catch up for this!
― wins, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 13:23 (eight years ago)
you're a good man, kiu
as for the films...well, yeah, there was loads of stuff we didn't get around to (for less urgent reasons) either...hopefully it'll all even itself out in the rollout
― an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 13:25 (eight years ago)
Alright, so work ran late and I've just now started to pull images together. Because I'm starting so late and the Europeans are probably heading to bed shortly, I'll expand the countdown and throw out 60-41 tonight. Hopefully tomorrow I'll start a few hours earlier, and on Thursday the top 20 will be rolled out at a reasonable time.
So 26 ballots. 176 films voted for. A couple from last year's list have placed again.

The ending of The Club seemed like a fatuous trick when I saw it long, long ago.

Result!
Should results be a separate thread?
― insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:09 (eight years ago)
I've always used the same thread because there aren't really enough posts to warrant it.
― Gukbe, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:10 (eight years ago)
I haven't seen The Club. I'm pretty ambivalent on Larrain.
― Gukbe, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:14 (eight years ago)
Larraín could end up with 3 films on this list?

― Gukbe, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:15 (eight years ago)
You should start again on another thread, maybe? It's just that some ilxors will be interested in the results but not look at the voting thread. Up to you, of course.
― Heavy Doors (jed_), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:17 (eight years ago)
Oh I voted for both of these!
― an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:18 (eight years ago)
So surprised to see Our Little Sister this low! Not Koreeda's best by any means, but lovely all the same
― tangenttangent, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:18 (eight years ago)
Xpost I liked "No" and "Tony Manero" a lot
― Well bissogled trotters (Michael B), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:18 (eight years ago)
No more Larrain please.
― insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:19 (eight years ago)
Our Little Sister got a much higher placement though. It's really, really lovely
― an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:19 (eight years ago)
We're going to have to think of an adjective for it other than 'lovely'
Ive never heard of "our little sister"

― an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:21 (eight years ago)
what is the general consensus as to Koreeda's best film? I just saw After Life for the first time this week. It was very odd but interesting
― Dan S, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:22 (eight years ago)
My friend wrote a great essay about it here: ‘Our Little Sister’: Making Enough Room for the Half-Sister
― tangenttangent, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:23 (eight years ago)
After-Life is still my favourite! So earnest and frequently hilarious. Those talking heads-style performances are excellent.
― tangenttangent, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:24 (eight years ago)
The Club probably my favorite Larrain, along with Jackie. Hm, tough choice, actually. Consider Club a 2015 release, though, it managed to come out in Danish cinemas in the fall.
After Life is the best Kore-eda, by far, imo. Such a unique creation. Maborosi and Distance also very good, and after that there's a drop in quality, though many of them are fine. Still Walking probably more than that. Our Little Sister fine as well, but I would have voted for Sweet Bean by Naomi Kawase for my feel-good Japanese film of the year.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:26 (eight years ago)
I really liked Nobody Knows as well.
I was crazy about The Club at the time, but over the year it sunk further and further in my estimation. Would need to see it again to gauge my feelings properly, but it did make it onto my ballot. I'm cool with massive tonal shifts
