I thought this was a great show, all told. It looked very much like a series of set pieces stitched together at times, especially around the scenes starring Cheryl/The Blossom House, but I suspect that was to try and play the Gothic grandeur of those up by making them look staged.

The downside was maybe that it had too much going on, or rather too many plots that didn't sit too well together or were forced. I didn't feel like the football team rapebros plot went anywhere, other than promote Ethel to cast regular and give a maguffin for the fight at the party, and was there really any need for the 'Blossoms stole the Maple Syrup' plot?

I guess I'd just prefer it to be a dumb 'Archie can't decide between two girls' teen soap if I'm honest, but that's just me.

A dance-off, this show is the best.

I had to drop out of this midway through, I had a hard time w/ Cheryl and/or the actress who plays her. Way too Ryan Murphy for my taste.

there is definitely a Glee vibe at times. but i'm okay with that. epic cheerleading tryout burn by veronica was suitably epic. stuff like that. i'm a big fan of bring it on though.

this show is good. i am on episode 11. i really like archie/veronica as 'agent of destruction.' and dark betty! there should be more dark-betty. for a while, i thought her sister was going to be, like, a split personality. also, the actor who plays archie is fascinatingly weird, and weird-looking. so is cheryl.

archie seems to have a sibilance in his speaking that makes me think he has relatively new veneers in his teeth

I got further into the season than I'd expected and might end up finishing the season.

I haven't read any long takes on the concept, but it really feels less like a gritty reimagining -- although it definitely leans into the gritty moments -- and an exploration of what Archic Comics would be like if the adults showed up and stayed instead of making brief appearances. Nearly every problem that's not a normal teen drama plot is fallout from some choice a parent made, historical family drama, or the imposition of adult concerns (failing businesses, real estate deals, in appropriate relations with a student (!)) on the kids.

They manage to still put these classic teen things in. Should Archie play football or follow his dream to make music? Will Josie's band get back together, or will Veronica be the new backup singer? You know that Archie's going to decline to be captain and somehow the compromise will work, and there's no way the band doesn't get back together, but it's good to watch it play out.

Making a first season's theme be "Who killed Jason Blossom?" is a pretty ridiculous Twin Peaks homage but it works. The Blossoms as this malevolent force in the town is this weird echo of how they were introduced into this very staid, throwback comic at a very late stage in its existence.

I thought Cheryl Blossom was an early character who got written out?

I guess she made a brief appearance in the early 80s but was deemed too scandalous, and was only a regular character in the mid 90s onward?
I mean, anything introduced to Archie in the 80s is still a relatively recent addition when you realize Archie predates the second world war

So i just watched the first episode of this and first thought was oh it's like a 90210 for millenials, and then i realized that's luke perry from 90210, which I watched briefly in the 90s

Then uh I started getting this weird feeling that those things weren't the only things I recognized

I think I'm down to a few minutes to determine whether a new tv show was filmed in Vancouver after having watched a bunch of SyFy and CW stuff.

There are at least a dozen actors who show up in every show filmed in the area because... Vancouver.

Yeah but i mean it's weird to see places you hung out in or walked around hundreds of times on screen in a popular show (not counting the hundreds of crappy low budget shows/movies that use Vancouver as a backdrop)

I don't watch a lot of american shows and not a lot of new Hollywood movies but the last one I remember is that superhero one and i didn't actually watch it but the trailer featured the viaduct so prominently it was also weird

I don't know any of the riverdale actors and I've never seen them in any other shows or movies either

yeah I think most of the kids are newcomers, I only recognize the Kevin dude from a L&O episode. the parents are uh all pretty recognizable!!

Obv I'm a tv addict but it's weird to think about watching Riverdale without the cultural references from the casting, Archie's Dad = Dylan from 90210, Betty's Mom = Shelly from Twin Peaks, Jughead's Dad = Billy from Scream, Betty's Dad = Jack from Charmed etc etc

it's pretty obv by the end of the season archie likes betty, it's just weird because they're next door neighbors and as little kids they had the whole destined to be together shtick. they even mention betty saying something about getting married in first grade!

like maybe archie wants to reach out in life and find himself instead of marrying his next door best friend. but it's also why his other relationships are mostly blips, with one notable exception (two if you get into the bad "archie in the future gets married" crap in the 90s or whatever)

really love how the show treated this jughead + betty plot

i personally love how Archie is kind of the least important part of the show, and that Betty & Veronica drive so much of the plot

that is kind of the unspoken premise of a lot of the comics. Archie occasionally bumbles through something and has some pratfalls, but a lot of it is him reacting to what other people do

notably his own title began the comics, but usually one of the other main characters joins him. meanwhile, Betty & Veronica get a series together

the only main comic dynamic that the show hasn't tackled is Reggie and Veronica's close bond, but I could see her ditching Archie to hang out with or date him in the future

btw this is all based on me remembering comics from the mid/late 80s, including a ton of reprints, and having browsed them while my mom was shopping in years after that

Almost caught up, my random thoughts:

• These kids never have any homework to do. You see them in class, but no one is ever teaching them anything. This high school is awesome.
• Archie is so dumb. He's incapable of focusing on more than one thing at once. I have to focus on football! I have to focus on music! I can't possibly do both! It's a good thing he doesn't have any homework. I have a math test and a history test! I can't possible study for both!
• Archie is the only one of the core cast that acts like a high school kid. The rest are essentially adults.
• I LOVE all the moms. Especially the more terrible they get.
• Luke Perry has aged well.
• "Betty's ponytail is iconic and beyond reproach!"
• Cheryl and Veronica's dance off.
• I really liked ep 2:3. Good character development for Kevin. A lot of times he’s just a bit of comic relief, but they did a good job in this ep of giving him some more depth. Also the very sweet conversations he had with his dad and moose.

It's great looking and I appreciate the appeal to the gay male gaze (Archie is literally introduced via a gay character staring at him through a window), but this is otherwise quite dreadful. The dialogue is the worst; in a just world, Kevin Williamson and Diablo Cody will one day be called to answer for their crimes against screenwriting.

I think the reason I love Riverdale IS that it’s so caricatured, the corny dialogue & ridiculous situations make it v enjoyable for me. But I also really like Gotham, which is even dumber & more ott

I'll say this: if I kept watching, I'd be interested in seeing if the show ends up doing anything with the Hitchcockian touch of the resemblance between Archie and the murder victim.

Really, it just came down to my figuring out that watching all 13 episodes of the first season would take up a bit over 6.5 hours of my life, which perhaps doesn't sound like much, but I tend to measure these things in terms of what else I could be watching in that time, and I have a whole stack of promising DVDs checked out of the library at the moment (not to mention countless hours of unwatched movies in my PVR) and the numbers just didn't work out in the show's favour.

I mean, it’s essentially a wacky soap opera. Love it.

i never paid much attention to Skeet Ulrich except thinking he was hot, but I am v much enjoying him as FP. And obv, crushing on him in a major way.

I hate myself for having massive crushes on both Cole Sprouse AND Skeet Ulrich.

Stopped at episode two of season two, but started again a couple of days ago and now I'm back to being hooked lol. It's a good show to watch while folding laundry or just for the sake of having something on while you're doing something else.

In a show filled with dumb characters, Archie is literally too dumb to live though - like yes, telling your mobster boss you've been keeping a (very thin) journal of all the shady things you've seen is an extremely good idea.

I’m not a big fan of musicals but making one based on Carrie is a pretty good idea and every high school should stage it, imo

Carrie: The Musical was an infamous Broadway bomb. someone locally attempted to stage it last year to try and rework it into something good but it got panned cos frankly you'd have to rewrite it to make it good.

A Carrie Musical IS an awesome idea, for sure.

Trying to explain everything that’s happened on Riverdale this season is an impossible task, but to sum it up: Hiram Lodge tried to blow up Archie with a bomb, which instead somehow gave the main cast a variety of superpowers and allowed a dark sorcerer named Percival Pickens to arrive in town from another dimension. Also, Cheryl Blossom became a witch (unrelated). Archie and the gang managed to murder Percival before he was able to take over the town—both time travel and Satan were involved—but not before he was able to redirect Bailey’s Comet (not a typo) to head directly at Riverdale. This is a lot, and I’ve barely scratched the surface of what’s happened in season six, and I won’t even get into how the lance that pierced the side of Jesus while he was on the cross ended up in a Riverdale pawn shop.

I'm never going to try to catch up with this but I do enjoy reading summaries of everything that happened after the second season. It's kind of like reading the wiki summaries of Dune books after the first two.

i really enjoyed riverdale s1, but season 2 was too long and uneven-seeming so i kinda just abandoned the show until my friend convinced me to watch season 7 because it's heavily bisexual (it is, for a cw show), so then i came up with the unbelievably stupid idea of watching the seasons in reverse. i'm in 5 right now. this show fucking sucks. i love it

there are so many musical numbers and the cast are passable karaoke singers attempting stuff like "shallow" and "it's all coming back to me now" and sooo much musical theater and i have to look away from the screen in embarrassment whenever it happens

still: cheryl blossom is the greatest character in the history of television

i have not watched it since early s3 and don't intend to restart but whenever i come across clips, it always seems like the most bonkers shit ever (and the finale sounds straight up hilarious)
