what is the general consensus as to Koreeda's best film? I just saw After Life for the first time this week. It was very odd but interesting

My friend wrote a great essay about it here: ‘Our Little Sister’: Making Enough Room for the Half-Sister

After-Life is still my favourite! So earnest and frequently hilarious. Those talking heads-style performances are excellent.

The Club probably my favorite Larrain, along with Jackie. Hm, tough choice, actually. Consider Club a 2015 release, though, it managed to come out in Danish cinemas in the fall.
After Life is the best Kore-eda, by far, imo. Such a unique creation. Maborosi and Distance also very good, and after that there's a drop in quality, though many of them are fine. Still Walking probably more than that. Our Little Sister fine as well, but I would have voted for Sweet Bean by Naomi Kawase for my feel-good Japanese film of the year.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, March 7, 2017 11:26 PM (six minutes ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink
I really liked Nobody Knows as well.
I was crazy about The Club at the time, but over the year it sunk further and further in my estimation. Would need to see it again to gauge my feelings properly, but it did make it onto my ballot. I'm cool with massive tonal shifts

The Love Witch hasn't been on my radar, but I like the description of it in the NY Review of Books: "a very dry, stylized, totally obsessive horror comedy that, in its tale of an amorous witch playing the field in Eureka, California, is both a New Age satire and a credible pastiche of an American International drive-in flick, circa 1970."
― Dan S, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:50 (eight years ago)
Easily the most prolific of the core American filmmakers of the '70s, one of the two or three best many would argue (I wouldn't--top six or seven), and, I assume, a big influence on Baumbach. I had it pretty high.
― clemenza, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:50 (eight years ago)
Yes, not really sure why I haven't heard of this Love Witch film!
― tangenttangent, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 23:51 (eight years ago)
I don't normally go in for that kind of pastiche but it's smart and quite funny. And immaculately costumed.

No De Palma hack bullshit job! Guzman was made by what happened to his country, goes back again and again to the events from different angles and shades. I really needed to see more from him when the BFI put up a season two years ago - a lot to discover.

Anomalisa is just one of the worst trailers - not sure how anyone could sit through (never mind vote!) for it.
― xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 00:35 (eight years ago)
I had a strange pull to see Maggie's Plan but never got around to it.
― Gukbe, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 00:38 (eight years ago)
The Love Witch seems like it's going to be some bullshit capital-c camp thing, where everything is in quotation marks. But instead it simultaneously takes its premise (feminist tale of a real witch with plenty of death and weird rituals) AND its style of filming (late 50s/60s lavish studio Technicolor) 100% seriously, and takes them to their natural limits. Also, moreso than any film I've seen this year, it doesn't tell you what to think about its characters or the events of the film.
― intheblanks, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 00:38 (eight years ago)
The Love Witch also totally beautiful, the costuming and the set design, all shot in 35mm, with really well-modulated performances. I didn't write these tweets but this thread sums it up for me. https://twitter.com/MrPaulDuane/status/833101458891472896
― intheblanks, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 00:40 (eight years ago)
I was one of the Indignation voters, another one where I was pleasantly surprised. It seems like it's going to be a stodgy period-piece prestige literary adaptation, but it ends up being far more interesting than that thanks mainly to an incredible 10-minute scene between Tracy Letts and Logan Lerman halfway through
― intheblanks, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 00:42 (eight years ago)
I gave Anomalisa my no. 1 vote
― Well bissogled trotters (Michael B), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 00:43 (eight years ago)
I like capital-c camp a whole lot
I hate-watched Maggie's Plan and Cafe Society on the same day, but Maggie's Plan was actually pretty enjoyable. It was like a smoother-flowing Listen Up Philip.
― tangenttangent, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 00:43 (eight years ago)
Micheal B: You did, I'm sorry I forgot to note that.
― Gukbe, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 00:46 (eight years ago)
"Capital-c camp" was the wrong way to put it. What I meant is that the film isn't saying "Isn't the way they used to make movies ridiculous? Aren't old styles of acting bad and corny?" like some things I've seen.
― intheblanks, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 00:46 (eight years ago)
I didn't vote for Zootopia but Jason Bateman is a fox.
― the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 00:47 (eight years ago)
Anomalisa made me feel incredibly sick on several levels, but it was quite astonishing to see that appalling feeling of gut-wrenching paranoid reappraisal writ large for a semi-mainstream audience. The breakfast scene was the most memorable part for me.

I feel like Anomalisa was one of those movies with a big message that I didn't quite get, but I really liked the idea that the sound of one's voice can be the key thing that makes them attractive to you
― Dan S, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 00:50 (eight years ago)
I enjoyed watching Sing Street, as flimsy as it is. My main takeaway is that, in my mind, they play a song that just sounds like Alphabeat's "Fascination" when I think of it, though not as good.

― Gukbe, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:02 (eight years ago)
Anomalisa: Really liked it minus one revelation about 2/3 of the way through (to say more would be spoiler-y) that felt puzzlingly arbitrary to me.
The Lobster: Got half-way through before something happened that revulsed me so much that my sympathies were no longer with the film, and thus continuing with it was (I felt) pointless. Again, to be more specific would require spoilers, but lets just say I'm a dog person.

Tower is something which shouldn't work, but the rotoscope pulls you in more effectively than a straightforward reenactment would and the scene where the newscaster announces his grandsons death is one of the most gut wrenching scenes of last year.

The worst I can say about 20th Century Women is its more of a showcase for great moments than a great film. Which is to say, it made my list without hesitation.
― insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 02:34 (eight years ago)
Sometimes too quiet; I don't think Nichols has the skill yet to make that sort of stillness work. Often moving, though, especially Negga. If you got kids, watch it on a double bill with I Am Not Your Negro.

The Fits: Quite good, and surprising. I went in expecting something like, I dunno, Real Women Have Curves or some such thing and got something much closer to It Follows.
― some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 02:35 (eight years ago)
I was expecting 20th Century and Loving to be tedious awards bait (despite Nichols especially), but was pleasantly surprised to find both far more intelligent and engaging as a result.

So happy for Sieranevada, my #2 (or #3 perhaps, can't remember). Just assumed it wasn't going to get distribution anywhere anyways, so put it on this year. Now it can votesplit its way to the mid-fourties two years in a row. Yay! But wow, it's such a masterful film, perhaps Puiu's best.
Jackie should have been much higher, obviously. Among the best of the oscar-pap. The light especially. That long shot of the procession that ends up on John Jr's face inside the limo. Great film.

20th Century Women is a fine, unadventurous indie-film. Yeah, it's just easier to see. Sieranevada is exhilarating, experimental and hilarious. It's almost everything a film should be, from a master of the art who has made three masterpieces in a row.
It hasn't been shown in Denmark yet, btw. I tried to set up a screening, but failed.
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 21:25 (eight years ago)
Definitely!
― xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:06 (eight years ago)
20th Century Women is a lot better than just an "unadventurous indie-film". It certainly trades in a lot of the standard tropes, but it's surprising in just the right ways and very perceptive. Plus I liked the "Reagan is about to happen" prism.
― Gukbe, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:07 (eight years ago)

God Victoria feels like an age ago, I'd forgotten about it. I just checked last year's ballot to see if I voted for it then or something, I hadn't but did vote for Rams & the falling which I wasted some time talking about upthread. I should maybe pay more attention to which years I see things in (lol jokes nobody should)

gonna repeat my hot take here for the nth time. Hail Caesar! is a fantasy of the old H'wood studio system, from the POV by the studio system - thus the loyal, upstanding hatchet man is the protagonist, there's commies behind every bush, the talent are all good-for-nothing degenerates and traitors, only the enforced acquiescence to the beneficence of the system keeps things running smoothly.
― Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 March 2017 00:17 (eight years ago)
that being said, Brolin's not given enough to work with and as such the seams stitching all the pastiches together show a bit too much

With distance I just wasn't that arsed by Victoria - the 'gimmick' has been used a couple of other times already in blockbuster films, the main character's story was underwritten and I'd rather it wasn't told. Near the bottom of my ballot, that's about right for the average thing it was.

Weird to see Neon Demon place so high. I like Refn (and horror) more than most and thought it was pretty vapid, overall, a weak reflection of much better films by Hélène Cattet & Bruno Forzani. Eyeball scene is astonishing, but it only goes so far toward redeeming the rest.

Loving the rundown so far. Good thing about relatively small polls is seeing all the things that only make the 50 because of your own ballot (starting with The Club, Our Little Sister and Rams). The POWER.
Childhood of a Leader, Sing Street and The Lobster the only "get this off the list" moments for me so far.
Victoria was my #1 in a very personal 3am eternal kind of way. It left me ravished.

Catching up -
The Assassin was my number one - by some distance the best 'new' film I saw in 2016 (and yes, fit to be viewed alongside a digital restoration of Ugetsu). I liked it so much I went back to see it again on a screen a couple of days later, something I haven't done in years.
Nice pairing of Fire at Sea (which I've seen) and No Home Movie (which I haven't) - bet they would make a good double bill.
EWS was a pretty good "dudes being dudes" movie but I can't imagine putting it on a ballot or really ever thinking about it again. So OTM - other (non-bro) films on this list that I enjoyed but not enough to note for = Rams, Victoria, Hail Caesar.
I'm not by any means a Refn-hater, but thought Neon Demon was amongst his very weakest films, and it's high-ish placing here seems generous, to say the least. Also, surprised by people praising The Falling so much - to me the script seemed seriously undercooked, and the 'folk horror' elements superficial, even cynical. Have no interest in: Zootopia, Sing Street, Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
Mountains May Depart is the film I most regret not seeing - I think it only got screened in Scotland as part of the Glasgow Film Festival, and I missed that, and so far there is no Region 2 Blu.
― Bernie Lugg (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 9 March 2017 10:53 (eight years ago)
Oh, and I gave a high vote to Serra's Death of Louis XIV (which I again, I saw on its only screening in Scotland). Among its many pleasures is definitely the sense of it being a eulogy to Leaud, his face and body in old age (it was a good year for the older male lead actor - Measure of a Man yes, and I, Daniel Blake too.) Perhaps not quite as amazing as Serra's previous Story of My Death, but still a really wonderful chamber piece.
― Bernie Lugg (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 9 March 2017 10:59 (eight years ago)
Neon Demon probably also benefited from people being able to see it. I liked it very much, though it's not as good as Only God Forgives. The problem with filmmakers 'elevating style over substance' is rarely the lack of substance for me, but that they're never stylish enough. Refn is.
The Assassin was great, yeah. Amazing style, amazing substance (and I did get annoyed at people who claimed it was impenetrable, where it just played off a fairly well known historical situation, in China at least).
― Frederik B, Thursday, 9 March 2017 11:00 (eight years ago)

To give an impression, to give a shit, after all, would cloud the sheen of Refn’s film. It shows ts a series of well-dressed and attractive women who, to a symphony of yawns, get hurt. That it’s women hurting women instead of men is supposed to be progress in 2016.

Back to at least Bleeder Refn has been obsessed with inhumanity, with reducing his characters to essentials and have them run loose. When he's best it becomes like a fairy-tale world, the Nørrebro of Bleeder and Bangkok of Only God Forgives, for example, are incredible filmic creations imo. Neon Demon does the same thing with literal vampires, and it's not at all surprising anymore. But on the most simple level, people moving in rooms, it's still often breathtaking.

I resisted thinking of Arabian Nights as the best film of the year, with imago telling me on an almost daily basis that it definitely was, but eventually I had to concede that I also thought so. For originality of voice more than anything else, it is the film that I thought about more than any other and the director whose work I am most excited to follow. It's so wild.

I've seen complaints that the end is a tonal shift, but that never gelled with me considering 5 minutes into the movie we actually see the Witch. It's not like it's building suspense as to whether there is something supernatural going. I also appreciate taking historical writings on "superstitions" literally. The fact that it functions as a critique of patriarchy without really expanding on the sources is a bonus.
― Gukbe, Thursday, 9 March 2017 17:08 (eight years ago)
Hated The Witch. Found the main bulk of the film achingly dull and empty and all of its semi-lucid points about repressed female sexuality rendered totally null and boring by a blatantly misogynistic ending.

Naked women floating in the woods under the spell of a devil goat is the misogynist fantasy created at the time, and I think it makes sense that after all the "female weakness" and fear of sexuality that goes through, that it seems like the best alternative. The fact that the movie sees it as cathartic rather than scary is why I can't see it as misogynist.

Why should a centuries-old fantasy be the basis for the interpretation of a contemporary film? That makes zero sense. It's not critiquing the fantasy in any way. I love levitating witches as much as anyone and in concept, this film was something I couldn't wait for. But ceding literally all the power of all the women to one man? Fuck that. Also it was very boring.
― tangenttangent, Thursday, 9 March 2017 17:22 (eight years ago)

If you're taking the film word for word from primary sources, with the aim of putting on screen bit and pieces from what was said and believed at the time, then yes, it is the basis of interpretation. We interpret it differently because of how it's made/edited/what he's chosen to use, and because we have a different belief system/understanding of gender.

The devil could have been incorporated in many different ways. I just don't think it needed such a tired exposition. I thought it undermined everything that had been semi-interesting about the exploration of female sexuality in that context.

I liked the film, but at the time I remember wondering if the ending would have been more powerful without any supernatural reveal.
The performance by the young boy, in his one big scene, is quite remarkable.

The final voiceover in the film (probably better in Thai): “There is a mountain of bricks. It spreads out like a flower blossom. It stretches to the sky to devour the sun. It is very far away. It looks ominous and fearsome. It pretends to be a pure and flawless being, pretends to be as soft as a child's palm. Before it disappears the wall bulges and changes shape, as if it knows that when it falls it will be an astounding sight to behold.”
All of his films seem to me to be variations on the idea that the spirit world and real world coexist, that all you need to do is open your eyes

Wtf is this weird reliance on historicity as the pinnacle of cinematic meaning? If the film is really only about recapturing and depicting the morals of the time then I just have no idea why anyone would think it was even interesting to make that film. Had there been a valuable critique of the devil as this power-giving puppeteer inherent in obvious interpretations of the film then it would have been alright, but why do I want to watch yet another film about men being the key to sexuality? It's lazy and disappointing. Why couldn't she have found the coven on her own? What would that have detracted from the so-called accuracy of the film? It sounds like the supporting argument here is 'ah but it wouldn't have been like that because in those days the devil would have intervened'.
Okay, I'll stop talking about The Witch now because I think maybe there is a need to be less negative but idk idk I just hated it I'm sorry

― Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Thursday, 9 March 2017 17:47 (eight years ago)
Historical accuracy isn't the pinnacle of cinematic meaning, but if the filmmaker sets out to take historical record at face value and go from there, then I'm okay with approaching the work from that perspective. Granted, I have a personal appreciation of this, having spent years in a history degree where you read Gregory of Tours talk about God's intervention in Clovis' life and you're asked to interpret that to mean x, y, z, etc. If she makes the choice, she makes the choice, and within the context, it seems the most empowering one, regardless of the gender of the goat.
― Gukbe, Thursday, 9 March 2017 17:51 (eight years ago)
Or maybe I should say that everyone knows the devil as a female seducing goat doesn't exist...what this movie presupposes is..maybe he did?

Young woman exists in a patriarchal, oppressive system that denies her all agency. She is seduced by that system's fantasy of evil, conveyed primarily through images of female power (present in both beauty and terror). When she finally finally accepts the Devil's hand, she is liberated, literally elevated.
It makes sense to me that the "ultimate evil" of Puritan imagination appears here as a male Devil. And the film's themes come through more clearly, I think, when the heroine's embrace of what her culture fears is played using traditional imagery. Packs a bigger shock-wallop that way, too.
Honestly, I think it's less about the rejection of Christianity or the patriarchy as a means of self-empowerment as the rejection of "the good". Like, to be evil is better than good, freer, truer, more powerful and happier. But, sure, a female Devil would have been interesting.

Loved The Handmaiden. The more explicit/sleazy elements of the sex scenes didn't bother me, but nor did I think they added much. Was more troubled by the pointless and overlong torture sequence. Great movie despite all that.

I just can't comfortably look past this, nor do I find it a powerful or shocking device in the slightest. I think Puritanical fear of female liberation was a more central issue that for me would have made more sense here as the coven forming in opposition to patriarchal force rather than that being its catalyst.

Let me be Morbs for a minute and quote from Reverse Shot:
This mesmerizing, multilayered production from ESPN for its 30 for 30 documentary series was a continually regenerative and revealing investigation into OJ Simpson as both man and symbol, while never losing sight of the larger societal and sociological forces that both created his public identity and conspired to allow him to get away with murder. This television show, nearly eight hours in length but made digestible for home viewing because it was divided into five segments of approximately ninety minutes each, is a marvel of editing and dialectical inquiry, endlessly searching yet confident that the indirect lines it’s drawing between the decades of racism and urban unrest in Los Angeles in the second half of the twentieth century and the lead-up and public response to the beloved African-American athlete’s acquittal in the murder of his long-abused wife will bear dramatic fruit. After watching this absolutely penetrating, perfectly structured episodic television study of this era-defining event, which passes from OJ’s childhood to his football and post-sports entertainment careers and on to, most extensively, the televised courtroom drama that became a part of nearly every American’s living room in the mid-nineties, any attentive viewer will no longer be able to think of the murder trial as a contained event with its own beginning and end. This devastating television miniseries reminds you that history—personal or public—exists on a continuum. Check it out on ESPN or Hulu or other channels for your television. —Michael Koresky

so many things I loved about this - the scenes with Juan, Naomi Harris and the shocking silent 'faggot!' moment of the first part, the violin score, the love scene-fight scene-revenge scene sequence of the middle section, Ashton Sanders (the best of an amazing cast in my opinion), “classic man”, the redemption of the third part, Trevante Rhodes, Andre Holland, “hello stranger”...

thought that the whole concept of door-to-door magazine subscription sales was odd, is this a real thing? but really liked the movie overall, and despite meandering it did not seem overlong
It seemed to be shot entirely at sunset! The scene with the guys from the oil rig was great

I made a list on Letterboxd.
(Hmm. 8/60. This is why I don't vote in these things.)

"SIIIIIGH, why has no one else voted for these festival films"
― Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Friday, 10 March 2017 04:45 (eight years ago)
i've seen 14/60 of the films that polled which is actually more than i thought (i def saw three of them in 2015, so i share the release-date frustration)
just promise me nobody will vote for the new xavier dolan in next year's poll
― donna rouge, Friday, 10 March 2017 05:57 (eight years ago)
Saw 36 of the 60. Will not be voting for the new Xavier Dolan (or Your Name, sorry) in next year's poll.
― Alba, Friday, 10 March 2017 07:12 (eight years ago)
Thanks for doing this again, Gukbe
33/60

Half of them are festival films, half of them came out in Denmark and apparently nowhere else. Go fuck yourself.
― Frederik B, Friday, 10 March 2017 10:38 (eight years ago)
And btw, the festival films on my ballot are more likely to have others voting for it. The festival circuit is international. Danish distribution is just fucked up.
Like, what's your fucking problem? That I don't make up my ballot according to what is easy for you to see? Mind your own fucking business.
― Frederik B, Friday, 10 March 2017 10:48 (eight years ago)
Anyways

That I don't make up my ballot according to what is easy for you to see?
YES. That is the point of release-date criteria, Hamlet.

The Love Witch looks impeccably lurid, is fitfully amusing -- and terminally arch.

The RenFaire 'wedding' where the cop and the witch are giving their theories of love in v/o is a standout.

The best film of 2017 is called Janbal and is from Iran and will probably be impossible to see for anyone. Sorry, I don't make the rules.
― Frederik B, Sunday, 26 March 2017 20:37 (eight years ago)
I love Frederik's tips. This one's not even on IMDb but there's some info here:

― Alba, Monday, 27 March 2017 07:07 (eight years ago)
Hope it'll come further out. It's this absolutely amazing mix of local and trans-national - portraying beliefs on a small Iranian island, but influenced from all over the Persian gulf - + old and modern - mystic belief system portrayed on grainy digital. It does some of the same things as Eduardo Williams The Human Surge, which some of you might have seen a few weeks ago?
