Publicly, McCain has angrily railed about his own refusal to rest in peace, calling it an egregious breach of the public interest and unacceptable, but privately, he continues to gobble fistfuls of vitamins and engage in an exercise regimen that should maintain his health for years to come.

Mandal Envy (Old Lunch), Thursday, 20 July 2017 14:48 (eight years ago)

Ugh. Thanks to John McCain's political acumen in picking Sarah Palin to be his running mate, the GOP legitimated a toxic kind of imbecility for which the Republic has been paying for nine years (look at who sits in the Oval Office). Thanks to the authorizations for war that McCain has endorsed, hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children in the Middle East are dead. Had he won the presidency, he would have bombed Iran. He would bomb Scranton if one of his staff whispered in his querulous ear that terrorists ran the snack shop of a bowling alley. He would have voted for the Millionaires Bailout Act, aka Trumpcare, sending thousands of his constituents into penury. His "maverick" reputation, based on little more than barbeques and shooting the shit with bovine reporters, is one of the more mendacious examples of resumé swelling I've seen this century. The Beltway press abetted the rise of this fraud, and when the press abandoned him for Barack Obama the intensity of his resentment and the depths of his shallowness were exposed. He is an awful senator and unfeeling man.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 26 August 2018 03:04 (seven years ago)

Christ, man. Anything Obama puts in a press release about McCain is purely ceremonial. Like the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. Or the hoopla when a Jeopardy contestant picks the Daily Double.

nope, read the fucking slop he released.

it's supposed to sound heartfelt and genuine, you ass. you and I will never be close enough to the obamas to hear what they really think about McCain. but whatever it is, the odds are overwhelming it is different, deeper and more nuanced than that press release.

But you seem to give more than a fuck about what they put into a purely ceremonial press release?

A is for (Aimless), Sunday, 26 August 2018 03:50 (seven years ago)

it's what they do, along with breathing and killing babies (napalm for Mac, drones for O)

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 26 August 2018 03:52 (seven years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhJ7NmU6lJI

global tetrahedron, Sunday, 26 August 2018 04:08 (seven years ago)

napalm for Mac

tbh, McCain flew fighter escort for B-52s, which dropped high explosives, not napalm. He probably fired very few live rounds at anyone before he copped it from ground-based anti-aircraft fire, because NV had few MiGs and few trained fighter pilots to sally against B-52 raids.

Obama def gave the orders allowing drone strikes that killed babies, but killing babies was not part of those orders, only a concomitant result, which gives him a fig leaf of the sort every military commander arranges. It's how that stuff is constructed to protect the humans who do it from getting paralyzed by conscience. If you asked him if he was happy to kill babies, he'd be shocked you thought that he might be.

You know this, but you fail to grasp it, because it is morally equivocal and you demand firmer ground. Even so, I suspect you excuse your own culpability in thousands of moral crimes of the system we inhabit, as beyond your power to avoid. It doesn't occur to you that the system is also larger than the president, who is also trapped in it.

A is for (Aimless), Sunday, 26 August 2018 04:08 (seven years ago)

Morbz u okay boo, seems like death of the Mav got u discombobulated

These Sticks Were Made For Dipping (Old Lunch), Sunday, 26 August 2018 04:09 (seven years ago)

I don't think Morbs wants to excuse himself of anything. That said, the notion that the average citizen who doesn't participate in atrocities approaches the culpability of the individuals who carry them out or order them smells like horseshit to me. I know, I know, *we live in a society* etc, but lots of people throughout history have refused orders, damn the consequences. McCain followed them and, from all indications, was happy to. And afterwards, never met a war he didn't want to back.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Sunday, 26 August 2018 06:16 (seven years ago)

Like, I get that "bloodlust" is an intense diagnosis but it seems to me like a fair one here.

I’m not sure what any of that really accomplished. In the larger scheme significantly less heinous than his R colleagues. Not a death that inspires dancing and/or grave pissing for me.

small thing in grand scheme of things but this ticked me off hearing about it after I moved to AZ:
He was against limiting number of helicopter tours in Grand Canyon, with the argument that it's the only way for some disabled veterans to see it and we'd be denying that privilege to our wounded warriors blah blah. The proposal would still have allowed for like 4500 flights per year. Teeniest bit of research showed that 90% of the tours were bought by wealthy foreigners. Turns out McCain had gotten campaign contributions from the heli tour operators.

The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 27 August 2018 20:27 (seven years ago)

oh MAN. I should poll these pearls:

- Leadership: What is he?

- Ronald Reagan. 1984. Speaking: “If we ever forget that we’re one nation under God,” he said, his deep brown eyes flashing leadershiply

- One day in the Senate mess hall, McCain sat down at my table, where I was dining alone on a salad of watercress. “What do a woman and a fire hydrant have in common?” he asked me, his eyes asparkle with magic. Before he had the chance to answer, an aide interrupted him, and he rushed off. On Saturday, that terrible eve, when I heard that John McCain had passed away at last, I thought back to this riddle. It shall remain an unsolved mystery. Like our Constitution, it will be studied by future generations—its subtleties, perhaps, teased out one day by those who today are just children. In class, they sit. Perhaps in Iowa. Perhaps in fields of grain.

- He paused, and took a sip of what I imagined at the time was absinthe, but which may in retrospect have been water.

- With a final wink—and a smile—he was gone, trailing what seemed to be be sparkles.

- And I turned up the volume just in time to hear him say, “I vote yes to confirm Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court of the United States of America.” I’ll be damned if he wasn’t winking.

The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 27 August 2018 20:31 (seven years ago)

While the leadershiply will attract the most laughter, one must stop and marvel at the concatenation of Speaking:, followed by quotation marks and he said, just in case we didn't get the idea.

The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 31 August 2018 00:17 (seven years ago)

It doesn't occur to you (or Simon) that, in politics, hacks have their uses. American history is full of people whose careers died at the foot of a larger movement. I'm not suggesting that speaking at McCain's funeral serves any use at all, but if Biden doesn't run yet lends his prestige to campaiging for good leftist candidates who gives a flying fuck whom he eulogizes?

I am fascinated by the idea that there is a very niche group of highly capable event planning / logistics specialists who organize these things, like the Les Clefs d'Or for VIP funerals. I don't know if it's true. But it seems like once you get to a certain circle, like being a card-carrying member of multiple secret societies etc., you might get a phone call from some folks who want to help you arrange in advance for the rapid interstate transportation of your corpse, and make sure your coffin is exactly where it needs to be, handled by exactly the right people in the right uniforms at the right time, with the right guest lists at each stop.

Alternatively, McCain was a swollen prick so enamored of his own significance that he just had his staff work on this shit and basically nothing else as soon as he got his Stage 4 diagnosis.

“So much of our politics can seem small and mean and petty. Trafficking in bombast and insult, phony controversies and manufactured outrage. It’s a politics that pretends to be brave and tough, but is instead born of fear. John called on us to be bigger than that, to be better than that. Today is only one day in all the days that will ever be, but what will happen in all the other days will depend on what you do today. What better way to honor John McCain than follow his example.”

What could be the common thread here

Paleo Weltschmerz (El Tomboto), Sunday, 2 September 2018 16:49 (seven years ago)

Sorry that was reductive. Basically Obama’s never been angry enough for a lot of people. Also, too brown, but I’m sure nobody on ILX has ever been dismissive of somebody based on their skin tone.

What would be interesting would be a discussion of some of the rampant paternalistic sexism on display at Aretha’s funeral but I take it almost nobody here watched any of that

Paleo Weltschmerz (El Tomboto), Sunday, 2 September 2018 16:54 (seven years ago)

personally I don't care about Obama's remarks and it's silly (not only based on his ex-prez status but also on literally everything he's ever said and done in public) to expect any different. it's the totally uncritical veneration among the media class that bothers me and I expect to extend well beyond the mourning period. (there's no reason to be surprised by this, either, but unlike O they don't have a good excuse.)

McCain made the strategic move of positioning himself as the icon for bipartisanship and traditional Senatorial precedent and decorum by making those 'issues' the centerpiece of his 'nay" vote on Obamacare repeal and the theme of his self-aggrandizing Farewell Letter (as if he were the new Geo. Washinngton or some such figure). This was extra-strength catnip to the DC 'centrists' and mainstream journalists who now can idolize him to the hilt as a way of expressing passive-aggression toward Trump. Bcz real aggression might be bad for their careers.

As a way of surfing a political wave right into the grave, it was moderately brilliant. His place in history is far less certain than his place in MSM anti-Trump agitprop for the next week or two.

this is never gonna end huh

As McCain (R-Ariz.) ascends to heaven on an updraft of praise, Trump’s political hell on Earth will burn hotter. Through the wall-to-wall coverage of McCain’s life, and his memorial and burial that will take place over the next few days, Trump will become a bystander as our nation is given a reminder of the best of what it stands for, and the best of what it can be. The president and the rest of America are about to look in the mirror and see Trump’s opposite.

McCain lived a life of service to country; Trump lives in service of self. McCain exemplified sacrifice; Trump, indulgence. McCain played down his heroism; Trump boasts of imagined rescues into school buildings to save children from gunfire. McCain sought reconciliation with his enemies; Trump thrives on creating new ones. McCain was, in the words of his longtime aide and collaborator Mark Salter, a “romantic about his causes and a cynic about the world.” Trump is a cynic about both.

We might want to pull the reins back just a touch on going too full-bore Kelly cartoon, though. I think even Trump will start to see through the purple prose at some point.
