Aubergine by a landslide

Where the fuck is zucchini what I nominated?

zucchini is a summer squash, so put yer vote there

Any reason mushy peas are they only prepared veg included?

Summer squash my ass, I'm voting mushy peas.

attention vampire (MatthewK), Thursday, 10 August 2017 09:29 (eight years ago)

this whole nominations / poll process has been a thinly-disguised attack on noodle vague and tom d's insane assertion that mushy peas are the acme, the ne plus ultra if u will, of veggie goodness, so they kinda need to be included for public shaming purposes

jk rowling obituary thread (darraghmac), Thursday, 10 August 2017 11:08 (eight years ago)

Onion wins on versatility alone, lack of garlic here is a scandal.

Too many options it's all bollix there are only about six vegetables

what can i say, ilx contains multitudes, and some of those multitudes don't know what a vegetable is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I thought I didn't like mushy peas but I think that was based on trying them once when I was very young (probably under 5). Then when we had some in-laws visiting they wanted to try some of our disgusting British food so we had fish, chips & mushy peas and I gave it a go and what do you know, mushy peas are actually delicious. Although not enough that I'm bitterly upset about 35 years of no mushy peas tbh.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 10 August 2017 11:42 (eight years ago)

Had same experience with mushy peas but put it down to the version I had as a kid coming from a cheap tin whereas now I guess it would be posh stuff.

chips are beyond reproach, roasties & creamy mash are incredible but only occasional treats. otherwise potatoes are no way near as useful, delicious or versatile as onions or toms, they are the wicked idol of the bland-palated sauce-denying ascetic

Cucumber is the only one of these that I'll eat raw, fresh out of the garden. Plus they are handy in raitas and tzatziki. And tabouleh!

Corn was a very close runner-up - not only for it's cob variation, but also for it's ingenious use in such dishes as Fritos.

how's life, Thursday, 10 August 2017 15:33 (eight years ago)

generously seasoned mashed potatoes, with sour cream and butter are pretty amazing for something so simple to prepare. Irish style mash with cabbage/leeks cooked in milk + butter, rules as well. But onions and tomatoes are so much more important to me.

calzino, Thursday, 10 August 2017 15:46 (eight years ago)

freedom is not having to measure life with a ruler (outdoor_miner), Thursday, 10 August 2017 16:11 (eight years ago)

This poll is impossible. There is no such thing as a "best vegetable" in the singular. The entire category only makes sense in the plural.

A is for (Aimless), Thursday, 10 August 2017 16:15 (eight years ago)

I'm voting for artichokes. There are a bunch of vegetables on here that are totally essential, extremely versatile ingredients in many different dishes, like tomatoes and onions and various others. These are great vegetables that deserve appreciation.

Artichokes, OTOH, are not versatile or essential, but they are fun and exciting. Artichokes are special event vegetables that can elevate a meal to that next level. I like to think of them as the crab legs of the vegetable world.

Moodles, Thursday, 10 August 2017 16:16 (eight years ago)

a prune isn't really a vegetable

cabbage is a vegetable, makes it okay

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 10 August 2017 16:17 (eight years ago)

Every year during asparagus season, I make certain to eat as much as I can. I never get tired of it, but then I have so little opportunity, since the season is only about two months here. I t was either asparagus or some workhorse vegetable that I eat three to five times a week in some form. I went with the much-adored, but less overexposed choice. But to tell the truth, I have a list of about twenty "favorite" vegetables, so my vote is bound to be a lie of omission.

Real yams are not widely cultivated outside of Polynesia. All the produce labeled "yams" in grocery stores in the USA are variants of sweet potatoes. The growers petitioned the USDA to call some sweet potato varieties "yams" because they sounded more exotic and sold better.

There are different kinds of yam - the Polynesian one is Purple Yam (which is the one eaten in the West Indies and US iirc). The one eaten in Africa and Europe is White Yam.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Friday, 25 August 2017 07:39 (eight years ago)

They are both "real yams" though, and African yams are produced in much greater quantities than Polynesian yams (according to Wikipedia anyway)

Americans and NZers (and apparently Australians) also call sweet potatoes "yams" which is what Trayce was talking about I guess.

The NZ "yam" sweet potato is called "oca" though - there's an option in the poll "oka" which doesn't seem to exist, so maybe that's an alternate spelling, and so Trayce's point still stands about sweet potato appearing multiple times.

frankfurters take on new glamour in this gleaming aspic (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 25 August 2017 08:20 (eight years ago)

honestly this should have been a ballot poll. potato will reign always in a pick-one poll because potato goes well with practically anything and if you've ever been poor probably you've gone through whole seasons where in the absence of potatoes it would've been super hard times. potato would probably not win a ballot poll because it would be ranked people's third or fourth favorite vegetable but if you ask people to just pick one vegetable then many of them are going to do the reasonable thing and say "yes, asparagus is delicious, and guess what I can't live on for weeks at a time if it comes down to it, asparagus, I'm voting potato, long life to the anti-potato crew but be real"

what ilx needs more than ever is certainty. potatoes have secured the largest number of votes in this entirely fair and democratic poll, and despite the devisive rhetoric we have seen from some quarters in recent days, it is clear that going forward ilx must accept potatoes as the best vegetable

also, fuck mushy peas

I made some Bombay style potatoes yesterday, they were boiled in their skins, fried in butter with mustard seeds/cumin seeds, garlic, ginger, onions, tomatoes + extra hot Caribbean curry powder + loads of spices etc. Damn, it was so nice I'm doing it again today.

calzino, Friday, 25 August 2017 14:21 (eight years ago)

I want to try that. Is there a recipe online you use?

jmm, Friday, 25 August 2017 14:25 (eight years ago)

I can't remember what recipe I started with. But I boil some reasonable sized potatoes in their skins for half an hour. Cube them after they have cooled. Fry the Mustard seeds/Cumin seeds in massive slab of butter, then add potatoes, onions and spices. Sorry I'm no good at this! I bet Suzy has a killer recipe.

calzino, Friday, 25 August 2017 14:33 (eight years ago)

that sounds more like onions and tomatoes and garlic with potatoes in it.

Tarly Noise (El Tomboto), Friday, 25 August 2017 14:33 (eight years ago)

why don't you try the recipe four more times and leave out a different vegetable each time, then tell us which one seems most crucial.

Neves Say Neves Again (Noodle Vague), Friday, 25 August 2017 14:36 (eight years ago)

it's a collaborative effort, as the garlic, onions and tomatoes shrink and dissipate into the potatoes - they become an important part of it, but not necessarily the star attraction!

That basically was a recipe?

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 25 August 2017 14:40 (eight years ago)

I suppose it was an attempt. Also add Turmeric, Cayenne Pepper and some ground Cumin. Is what I usually do. And I find going irresponsibly apeshit with the butter makes it much unhealthier and tastier.

frankfurters take on new glamour in this gleaming aspic (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 25 August 2017 14:48 (eight years ago)

calzino is right - that recipe is specific to potatoes - you could try it with another starchy veg like yuca or something but only the intrepid potato will meet the acid of the tomato & the sting of the onion head-on, laughing, its face to the wind announcing - I am the potato - I have the gumption to weather storms in which my brethren vegetables wilt - fuck the haters, eat some taters

she carries a torch. two torches, actually (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Friday, 25 August 2017 14:55 (eight years ago)

potato will reign always in a pick-one poll because potato goes well with practically anything and if you've ever been poor probably you've gone through whole seasons where in the absence of potatoes it would've been super hard times

i don't know, during my shitty college days when i was learning how to feed myself i pretty much lived on quinoa and lentils, and even though i appreciate those foods and will gladly eat them on occasion to this day, i'm not going to pick them in any poll because 64% of my body was made out of lentils at some point and i've had enough for a lifetime. i imagine those who went the potato route during financial hardships might feel the same way!

i guess this comes down to whether or not we were voting for the one vegetable that we'd want to pick as a practical matter, day-in and day-out, or if we were voting for the vegetable that stands out as especially delicious compared to others for a single meal. like the great ILX reality cooking series, and the special food group for one episode is "vegetable", and you have to choose something from the ingredients in the poll to wow the judges (who, in a cruel twist, is just guy fieri). in that case, even guy fieri is going to be disappointed in "potato" unless you dumb bbq sauce all over it or something

Karl Malone, Friday, 25 August 2017 14:56 (eight years ago)

weird typo with dumb and dump there due to the presence of the words guy fieri earlier in the sentence

sorry JMM, my recipe was a bit of a fudge, and jclc's honeyed classicism puts me to shame! I'd put about of inch cube of grated ginger and 6 or 7 cloves of garlic in there, is something I should have added.

calzino, Friday, 25 August 2017 15:31 (eight years ago)

Putting one clove of garlic into something, surely makes no discernible difference.

Depends on how you prep it. One clove grated with a fine grater or microplane = the garlic punch of 5-6 cloves sliced/minced.

May contain peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, pits or pit fragments. (WilliamC), Friday, 25 August 2017 15:51 (eight years ago)

I use a garlic press usually, which probably has the same effect as a microplane, and have never noticed this effect! I'm down with Maunika Gowardhan when it comes to garlic, don't be shy, 6 or 7 cloves will do.

Garlic Poll: More or less, and is William C's bad garlic science a 1st world construct. Where do you stand on this very important question, JCLC?

calzino, Friday, 25 August 2017 16:23 (eight years ago)

man that is a huge question. for several years I ate no onions or garlic at all -- as you might imagine, this has resulted in a very intense love for both. still I do think there are places where garlic can be overdone - there's a right quantity in a sauce, unless it's specifically a Garlic Sauce.

but like if it's a Thai dish like Eggs with Crispy Garlic, basically quadruple the amount in the recipe, you will not say "oh no there's too much of this incredible crispy garlic." If you're roasting vegetables, nobody's going to see "you've ruined this by roasting too many garlic cloves to mushy, melting, caramelized brown perfection."

I missed William C's postulate somebody refresh me

Some tardigrades can withstand temperatures down to 1 K (−458 °F; −272 °C) (close to absolute zero) while others can withstand 420 K (300 °F; 150 °C)[12] for several minutes, pressures about six times greater than those found in the deepest ocean trenches, ionizing radiation at doses hundreds of times higher than the lethal dose for a human, and the vacuum of outer space.[13] They can go without food or water for more than 30 years, drying out to the point where they are 3% or less water, only to rehydrate, forage, and reproduce.
