FP: Should 31 be the new 51 y/n

Message Bookmarked

Having seen numerous calls for bans the last year (u know whot 'n who I mean) and quite a lot of ilxors backing it, but seemingly not enough to materialize because 'lol demise of ilx' in the numbers, should the FP threshold be lowered from 51 to, say, 31? Would it solve anything in the first place, or is it good as it is? Does our FP-law rid the ILX eco-system of toxic unwanted drivel, or is it falling short because the user numbers are (seemingly) falling behind? Or, third option (not in the poll, but do elaborate), all is fair game and maybe we don't need FP anymore in the first place?

Not really. A bit though yeah, def.

Lots of people otm here, some a bit too eager even to my own liking but that comes with the territory.

Feels like the ilx massive wants to exclude a person or two for quite some time. And it's not happening. Fine by me, but the system seems flawed for 2017 realness. Which is why I asked 31 for 51.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 30 October 2017 02:09 (eight years ago)

I think that brings up a good point - we might dislike certain posters more than we ever would have in, say, peak noize dude era, because there are less of us, and so the, uh, noize floor is more noticeable

El Tomboto, Monday, 30 October 2017 02:17 (eight years ago)

bernard snowy, Monday, 30 October 2017 02:20 (eight years ago)

i support bernard snowy's proposal, seems sound.

if it's true that there are fewer of us, that makes us more vulnerable to assholes hanging around forever, never to reach 51 but able to really derail every thread at their whim. i always thought 51 was kind of shockingly high but i guess people used to do a lot more lol-SBing and you had to compensate for that.

mh, Monday, 30 October 2017 04:56 (eight years ago)

I suspect this poll was prompted by a particular poster who may have been 51'ed under a different username, but came back and is still a frequent irritant. My sense is that if any poster rises to the level of unacceptability requiring ejection, ILX will muster the necessary 51 FPs.

I personally doubt that there have been many posters who accumulated more than 31 active FPs who did not also pass the 51 threshold soon afterwards, but that is merely a guess on my part. Picking the 'right' number is not a science, but a fairly inexact heuristic. I'm fine with any number, as long as it is high enough that it cannot be driven by relatively small cabal. 51 has been adequately functional so far, imo.

I also note that 51 has deeply entered ILX lore. Changing it would render that lore illegible.

you say this like it's a bad thing

k3vin k., Monday, 30 October 2017 09:30 (eight years ago)

Thing is, on the rare occasions that a particularly obnoxious or abusive/racist/homophobic new poster appears, they tend to attract 10-20 FPs almost immediately which alerts us to them. Most of the time it's so obvious that we just ban them straight away, in the same way we would if we came across those posts by reading a thread normally.

As far as it goes for ILX regulars, the high threshold is kind of the point. You need to piss off a lot of people to get to that point. A lower threshold would be more open to abuse and as Kevin K says it's a solution to a problem we don't really have right now.

The football forum I post to has an interesting system that isn't without its flaws. There's a Like button AND a LOL button, as well as a FP button. Three buttons for every post! The biggest difficulty comes with LOLs, which are handed out both for genuinely humorous content and embarrassing nonsense. I've thought maybe a fourth button - LOL @ - to differentiate from 'LOL with' - and perhaps a fifth, a sort of 'super like', which you can dole out thrice per week to distinguish full hero-worship from the posts you vaguely concur with. A sixth button would be a 'dislike' - not as strong as a flag but nonetheless admonitory in nature. Other buttons for gratitude, shock or incomprehension suggest themselves. It really is limitless when you think about it

imago, Monday, 30 October 2017 11:52 (eight years ago)

a good system would be one where -- right below where someone posts -- there's a space where you can put a follow-up comment, perhaps of approval or derision, perhaps a further joke, perhaps suggesting the thread steer more towards your own interests

Something like FP has to scale, I think. After all, with a million posters 51 would be achieved too often to be useful, and with 50 posters it wouldn't be reached. If we have fewer posters now maybe it should be scaled down; I don't really care either way. I've only ever clicked the FP button by mistake on my phone, as far as I recall.

I seriously doubt we have fewer posters due to FP/SB or anything like that. It is more likely its because we aged out, and also a lot of women left ILX for reasons I'm sure no one needs to go over for the enth time.

The System could auto fp the fools we’ve blocked

Seems like there would be plenty of reasons to block someone you didn't particularly care for that don't rise to bannable offenses. The point of blocking/killfiling is precisely that it is personal to oneself and tailors ILX to your own predilections. Banning is universal and affects all ILX.

A is for (Aimless), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 18:35 (eight years ago)

Yeah to FP and ban people is pretty serious & really only extends to personal attacks, thread stalking, and obviously if they're being openly racist/homophobic/misogynistic/etc etc etc.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 18:37 (eight years ago)

this is the story: I accidentally posted something in the "unusual details in wikipedia articles" thread that was meant for the twin peaks thread. it was a detail about the building in the opening scene of the first episode not existing, and that someone had figured out the made up building was in the same spot as a church that was destroyed on 9/11, along with a very old Sycamore tree. just something to think about within the twin peaks thread. then Turrican said "Flappy bird is to 9/11 as Roger Waters is to WWII," because i guess he's read enough of my posts to figure out that I lived next to the Twin Towers when 9/11 happened and felt it was necessary to insult me apropos of nothing. calzino, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 19:34 (eight years ago)

proud of my part in this: no way sna

imago, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 19:35 (eight years ago)

Roger Waters' father was killed in WW2, later in life I think he might have wrote a few songs about this... or something. The implication being that flappy was somehow milking his personal connection/experience to 9/11 for... something or other.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 19:35 (eight years ago)

flappy bird, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 20:21 (eight years ago)

flappy not an aggressively tedious dullard so I have no problem distinguishing him.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 20:36 (eight years ago)

I took it as "he brings up 9/11 and how it affected him as frequently as Roger Waters brings up WWII and how it affected him"

Yup, I remember this and this was pretty much the way that it was intended, although I didn't actually know that you lived so close to the twin towers when I wrote that (I've only found that out, like, right this second) - I just assumed that you were more than a touch obsessed with 9/11 and didn't bother to look into why that was. Now that I know why, it's understandable that you'd want to talk about it so much and now feel my comments were unwarranted and incredibly mean.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 21:06 (eight years ago)

i was unaware that flappy allegedly 'brings up 9/11 and how it affected him frequently' -- i had him tagged as 'knows too much about smashing pumpkins'

It was highly insensitive and I wouldn't have made the comment in the first place if I'd truly known your situation.

doubling back to the auto-killfiling anyone you FP, couldn't disagree more. SB being downgraded to FP, whatever its flaws, makes it about the post not the poster. good posters can make terrible posts though it is comparatively rare I guess

sarahell, Thursday, 2 November 2017 17:48 (eight years ago)

autism is a real thing and using it as a zing against ppl whose content or posting style you dislike is offensive. i also FP any reference to asperger's done in this way, for the same reason. thankfully i feel like, as with the r-word, they've been on the decline around these parts. good poster, bad post.

sarahell, Thursday, 2 November 2017 18:25 (eight years ago)

For me, I don't think of obsessive, list-making behaviour as stereotypically "autistic" - particularly as understanding of the spectrum (and gender differences within it) has developed, it doesn't ring true, and seems reductive to the point of offensiveness. Putting it on a thread like this definitely makes it read as a zingy put-down, but even if it were somewhere else I'd still feel very uneasy about it.

emil.y, Thursday, 2 November 2017 18:30 (eight years ago)

it has historically been stereotyped this way on ilx. that's what I was referring to.

sarahell, Thursday, 2 November 2017 18:37 (eight years ago)

and my point was merely, to complain about "obsessive, list-making behaviour" in the context of a thread where people make lists and then compile them and discuss the results, is a bit absurd. And I have been guilty of that complaining in the past, and I am aware of the absurdity of my past behavior.

i guess "obsessive", "trainspottery", "filing", "stamp-collecting", "nerdy" i use in different contexts to try and do the job of describing compulsive nit-picky cataloguing but none of them are perfect. something to do with Pokemons might work. or killing butterflies.

Sorry to break topic here, and excuse my ignorance, but— does the flagged poster receive any sort of notice when they have been flagged?

I've never received any such thing myself, so maybe I've never been flagged. But, I think a notification system for when one has been flagged would be of some sort of use. Kind of as a semi-polite way of saying, "Hey, cut it out."

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Thursday, 2 November 2017 19:43 (eight years ago)

Did you receive like eight or nine notifications just now? Hang on, let me try again.

Evening Shade and Designing Women will not be seen tonight (Old Lunch), Thursday, 2 November 2017 19:45 (eight years ago)

iirc mods sometimes email people when they are approaching 51, but it's been done case-by-case

my suggestion is to keep the 51 number, but allow each of us to have two active FPs on any given poster, instead of one.

sleeve, Thursday, 2 November 2017 19:46 (eight years ago)

No, you don't receive a notification - you can post on the "request my SB/FP number" thread and if a mod's around they can tell you how many you've got (this isn't really an officially mod-sanctioned thread but it's also not frowned upon as far as I'm aware). The mods will also message you if you're approaching 51, but at that point it should probably be relatively clear from other posters what you've done that's been riling people.

xp with sleeve

emil.y, Thursday, 2 November 2017 19:51 (eight years ago)

I may not have agreed in every instance, but approximately zero of the instances where someone was 51-ed and banned have been surprising. Unless you're super un-self-aware, I would guess you'd probably know when it's at least a likelihood.

No, I was using it to describe content and posting styles that resemble behavior of someone on the Autism Spectrum. No like/dislike involved. Just descriptive.

the spectrum is broad (that's why the term "spectrum" was brought into use) & calling things "autistic" is reductive, dismissive, and offensive, and I hope you'll reconsider your position on using it in this way.

not really sure where else to post this without feeling awkward, but: our house on lawton street caught fire last week. my roommate's room, our kitchen and living room were totally wiped out, ditto the upstairs kitchen and living room, and every bedroom in the house got at least some measure of smoke and water damage. everybody has had to move out and is in the process of extracting and trying to clean/save anything not blatantly soaked and sooted to the bone. this has not really been very fun in a lightless house with face masks and headlamps. the worst thing of all is that our cat passed away of smoke inhalation, which i really don't even want to talk about. we're hoping it was quick and relatively painless.

i say all this as a preamble to, there is a gofundme for all us housemates (save Shuj4 H41d3r who lived downstairs of me - if you follow him on twitter you know he got his act together sooner to set up a fundraiser [plus had separate additional expenses to deal with] and has also shared this one). i hardly would ask any of y'all internet cats here to donate but please consider sharing, and more in the spirit of ILX, coming out to the bar-room fundraisers this friday! happy hour at marcos (broadway & malcolm x) from 2 to 8 followed by band showcase at The Gateway from 8:00 on. come have a drink, bring your friends, spread the word! i will be the frequently unshaven man wearing stupid hipster aviator glasses.

I think the way Turrican has (miraculously) survived so far is by *posting intensively only occasionally and only in certain specialist threads and posting blandly and uncontroversially in lots of others the rest of the time - even I don't mind him when he does that. Also he only posts on ILM, I doubt he would survive long if he posted anywhere else. I think I'm right in saying Turrican only survived his last scare because his FPs were widely distributed and some were now considered 'out of date' - I don't how that mechanism works. Fred has made mistake in the past of posting intensively more frequently in threads that were well populated and were about something more profound than what guitars George Harrison played on "Abbey Road" - thus running up a lot of FPs in a shorter period.

(*for 'posting' here read 'annoying people')

Scottish Country Twerking (Tom D.), Friday, 17 August 2018 14:32 (seven years ago)

this thread is interesting because when I flag posts it is because I think the post itself is objectionable, contains objectionable language, etc., and then the expectation is that the individual post is deleted but the poster is not advanced up some kind of fifty-strikes-you're-out-no-questions-asked scale.

this seems very...unintuitive. especially since the flag post screen tells you are flagging the *post* for attention of the moderators

how long have you been posting to ilx?!

this is not how it works

if a post is actionable you get a mod to action it

if you want the poster banned for an accumulation of offences flag the post

this has been done in about forty threads

i think when the system was first implemented katherine 51 was a sufficient number so that it wasn't about people "personally" disliking somebody but that if somebody made enough posts that annoyed enough people the board wasn't made worse by them taking a break for a month or two.

Noodle Vague, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:57 (seven years ago)

i think banning should be reserved for people like that guy l4rry 4appl3t0n who make people super uncomfortable

Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:57 (seven years ago)

the system mostly works but it can be very slow sometimes.

fairly recently we had a couple of longtime regular posters permabanned (and never to return) by the mods before they hit 51, at least one of them had it coming for a very long time.

there was another longtime regular who was banned, then returned after 30 days, and has seemingly left. though it should have been a mod permaban in the first place, it was another one that would have been deserved.

^^^all of these were related to men being habitually unable to not be creepy about women.

oh and adam bruneau self-permabanned recently. not sure what broke him, but he did seem to have some issues with The Last Jedi that may have destroyed him.

flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:58 (seven years ago)

totally respect other posters differing opinions about this too but it's very hard to point to an example of somebody being 51'd when they hadn't been pretty antagonistic to a broad circle of posters for a reasonable period of time

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:04 (seven years ago)

[I can easily see a situation where people decide to flag someone just because they personally don't like them.

The idea behind the 51 was precisely so that a small clique couldn't control who was banned, due to personal beefs or bullying. It was meant to require a broad sample of ilx sentiment that a poster had crossed lines into unacceptable territory. It isn't perfect, but it does tend to work as designed.

The suggestion to reduce the number to 31 was valid enough for discussion and become appropriate as numbers of ilxors dwindle. We should probably poll it periodically, maybe annually.

As for the change from "suggest ban" to "flag post", I don't recall the change giving rise to any particular delight, but rather a lot of confusion, followed by a moderate amount of ridicule when it became obvious that nothing had changed but the nomenclature.

and nowadays thats a load of posters who arent rly very good ilxors (inc yrs truly) taking lazy halfremembered potshots about very good former ilxors because ilx used to be great and mean and now its neither

flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:06 (seven years ago)

there's also a complicated relationship between civility and quality of posts. it's *possible* that if nobody is allowed to call anybody else a numbskull then the numbskull population might run out of control

Noodle Vague, Friday, 17 August 2018 21:16 (seven years ago)

(given that we all have numbskullery within us)

Noodle Vague, Friday, 17 August 2018 21:17 (seven years ago)

To prevent numbskullery you just need to educate and lead by example and lead a blameless life like I do

mods used to be way more obvious, but a) ILX is less rambunctious now and b) it was realised about ten years ago that modding quietly caused fewer shitstorms re: modding

out-and-out trolls do get removed by mod action

a bunch of FPs on one post will also raise mod attention & discussion, it's not a fully automated SB system

if ppl want a post edited or deleted, MRF is still there and used regularly, and has been for about 16 years

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 August 2018 13:07 (seven years ago)

I’ve reread my own posts a day later and thought “wow, that guy seems like an anxious mess who doesn’t need to be litigating a vague nothing on the internet” and flagged my own post.

I mean, sometimes it’s people being outright dicks or doing ban-worthy things like outright racism and misogyny. Other times, it’s recognizing that someone’s kind of messed up right now and could use a break

like when the bartender at your local cuts you off after two beers and says “hey buddy, I don’t think you need another drink, why not go home and get some rest”
not too many of those bartenders out there but it’s nice when it happens

mh, Saturday, 18 August 2018 13:33 (seven years ago)

I can handle more than two beers; ilx can handle some prickly characters such as deej and turrican.

Scottish Country Twerking (Tom D.), Saturday, 18 August 2018 14:13 (seven years ago)

mh, Saturday, 18 August 2018 14:34 (seven years ago)

Yeah Brit-on-Brit usage tends to scan differently although it isn’t cu*t-and-dried, but generally shouldn’t be read as offensive

Then again I’ve argued the opposite for Americans saying “spaz” and there is probably a better case there tbh so

Your people use 'cunt' where a civilized gentleman such as yours truly might utter 'jolly good morning' though

and how much is 'my posting style' the issue vs 'my ideological pov'

insofar as defensiveness is an ideology they're indistinguishable

well, last time it was because we had just abolished conscription, withdrawn from Vietnam, made university free, abolished the death penalty, released Papua New Guinea to be an independent country under the UN, brought in universal health care, instituted laws against racial discrimination, returned land rights to native people, set up arts grants and community radio licences, lowered the voting age to 18, allowed our third largest state-equivalent to elect senators, federally funded the connecting of homes to sewers, cut international tariffs, funded state schools, allowed single mothers to receive welfare for the first time, and brought in both equal pay and a minimum wage for women.

so I guess you guys still have a way to sink before Betty needs to step in again, yeah

stet is usually kind enough to provide figures showing that activity isnt rly down as much as we might perceive iirc

If we were to attempt this poll again today, would there even be a turnout of 31?

I have a dream.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 17:05 (five years ago)

Here's a thing about FPs that y'all may not realize: your most recent FP doesn't take the place of an older FP you gave to the same poster. Let's say you flagged Poster Z six months ago and again last week; the details page only shows the older one from you, and when a moderator clears out FPs that are six months old or older, your flag against that poster disappears even though you flagged them again just last week.

So if you're serious about using FP as a tool for policing ILXor behavior, it behooves you to flag every post you object to. For instance, I just looked at one particular poster's FP details and cleaned out their older FPs, dropping them from 26 to 13. If any of those 13 flaggers whose FPs got cleared out flagged that same poster AGAIN in the past six months, there's no record of it.

Maybe stet can tweak the code so that the most recent FP from a poster overwrites an older one, I don't know.

Miami weisse (WmC), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 17:47 (five years ago)

It seems like you are effectively saying that one should flag the poster, not the post.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 17:52 (five years ago)

I feel like something is off in your syntax there

it behooves you to flag every post you object to.

how does this square with "removing old FPs clears new ones as well"?

let's talk about gecs baby (sleeve), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 17:55 (five years ago)

So sorry WmC but I object to that post, it simply had to be done

Dr. Teeth and the Women (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 17:58 (five years ago)

how does this square with "removing old FPs clears new ones as well"?

my understanding is that the old FP never gets overwritten by the new one. if you flag a post and an old one still exists, no FP will be added. if you flag a post after the old one has been cleared out, a new FP will be added.

uncrut gems (crüt), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 17:59 (five years ago)

I don't know what I'm saying, except that a poster can only flag one post by another poster at a time, and only the oldest one registers, and when old ones get cleared out, any newer ones that may have existed get cleared out as well. I have muddied the water, ugh.

xp -- yes, crüt has it

Miami weisse (WmC), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 18:02 (five years ago)

hmm I would def prefer it if the 6-month clock reset with each new FP

let's talk about gecs baby (sleeve), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 18:04 (five years ago)

I agree. Honestly, it hadn't occurred to me to ask stet about this until today, duhhhh

Miami weisse (WmC), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 18:21 (five years ago)

easy remedied by flagging the poster at every conceivable reconfirmation of the behaviour that required banning
